Noise

A

ccording to the honorable team of Merriam-Webster, et al., the word “noise,” from the Latin nausea, is defined as “Sound, especially one that lacks agreeable musical quality or is noticeably unpleasant.”

be difficult at best. Rennsport Reunion V attracted over 57,000 visitors, many of them motivated by the unusual chance to hear vintage racers in action. After a full day, the din became very fatiguing.

Based on that definition, the “I love airplane noise” bumper sticker in my garage is contradictory. My enjoyment of aircraft sounds is quite conditional. Listening to a P-51 Mustang flying at close range has an “agreeable musical quality” to my ears, while turboprop airplanes emit a high-pitched whine that is “noticeably unpleasant.”

As Porsche owners, we all love our cars, both visually and aurally. Winding through the gears on an open road is a sensation we all cherish and want to experience on a regular basis. We should discipline ourselves, however, and enjoy the fun only when appropriate. Carving a curvy road early in the morning can be exhilarating, but to those in the area, the associated noise can be “noticeably unpleasant.” I believe that being a good driver and being a good neighbor go hand in hand.

MIKE HODSON

Two recent events have made me realize how subjective the word “noise” is to various groups. We attended Rennsport Reunion V (RRV) at Laguna Seca and the Point Mugu Air Show on the same weekend. One of the major attractions at RRV is seeing and hearing hundreds of iconic Porsche racing cars at speed on the track. For an enthusiast, nothing rivals standing close to the track and catching each gear change, while fantasizing about driving instead of spectating. Having previously waxed poetic regarding the Carrera GT engine, listening to numerous examples zipping by was heavenly. Every Porsche model, from the 356 to 918, has its own distinct sound. Several years ago, there was a motorcycle race at Laguna Seca featuring electric bikes. It was a strange experience hearing only a quiet whoosh as they rode past. Not the same as watching a MotoGP bike scream by at full song, loud enough to be almost painful. My use of the expression “full song” indicates how I feel about the sound of a MotoGP. Featured at the air show was the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron, flying the F/A-18 Super Hornet. Always the grand finale of each air show they visit, the Blue Angels put on an incredible display of precision flying, showcasing the skill and dedication of their male and female pilots. Part of the fun is the roar of the jets as they fly overhead at high speed and low altitude. There we stood in awe, with our ears still ringing after the show was over. However, for some residents close to Laguna Seca or Point Mugu Naval Air Station, all they hear is noise, which is understandable. Infrequent, short-term exposure to jets flying overhead can be fun. Over 75,000 people braved long entry and exit waits to experience the thrill, excitement and sound of high performance jets. Living with jet noise on a regular basis would AUSPUFF NOVEMBER 2O15

Election of 2016 SBR Officers Once again, it’s time to elect the officers who’ll lead our region in the coming year. On the adjacent page you’ll find a ballot containing the names of those running for office. These folks, along with the many other “volunteers” listed each month on page two of Der Auspuff, offer their time and ideas to make our club the great organization we all want it to be. Please take a moment to look over the ballot and then vote your choice for the elective offices represented. Also, please write in your preferences for Man & Woman of the Year, the honorary awards given to those who’ve worked extra hard during 2015 on behalf of our region. Signed and completed ballots must be submitted no later than December 5, 2015 so that they may be tallied in time for the newly-elected officers to be announced at our December 13th Holiday Brunch. If you’re reluctant to clip a page out of your Der Auspuff, you may photocopy the ballot or vote in person at the SBR Breakfast Meetings on November 7, November 14, and December 5.

Santa Barbara Region Volunteers Needed For Our November 14 Camarillo Autocross

O

n November 14, 2015, the Santa Barbara region autocross will return to Camarillo Airport. However, to make this a successful event, we need your help as a volunteer. We need members to assist with track maintenance, control of the paddock area, and other important, but not technical, tasks. Volunteering for this club activity can be a lot of fun. Not only do you see cars and drivers on the course, you meet other club members. SBR uses the money generated by this event to help sustain the club’s other non-revenue-generating activities throughout the year.

If you are new to the club, volunteering is a great way to help out, learn what an autocross is all about, and get to know other club members, all at the same time. Specifically, we need volunteers who can either put in a full eight hours (approximately) or four hours in the morning or four hours in the afternoon. There will be a barbecue and plenty of water to drink. In the past, we asked drivers to assist with course maintenance when they were not actually driving, but we would like to line up more non-driver volunteers to allow the participants to be better rested and focused on their driving.

If you can volunteer any of your time, please go to http://tinyurl.com/SBRNov-AutoX to register and indicate how much time you would be able to spend that day. Also, indicate your morning or afternoon availability. There are places for both drivers and volunteers to register, so please register as a volunteer. No prior autocross experience is necessary. We really appreciate your help in staging this event for the club. If you have any questions, contact the Autocross Chairman, Steve Ferrari (SteveFerrari@outlook.com) or Brian Rubino (BrianRubino@verizon.net). =

T

he beautiful and majestic scenery of Sherwood Country Club was the backdrop for the gorgeous array of over 70 Porsches at the Santa Barbara Region’s 39th annual Concours d’ Elegance. It proved to be an event that will linger in our memories. James Edwards cleverly parked his 2010 Cayman S at the entrance to Lake Sherwood signaling drivers that they had arrived

at the proper gate. The friendly faces of Michael Jacobs, Gary Weaver and Dave and Larry Mosesson guided everyone along the tree-lined streets directly to the event site, the “tennis court lawn” at Sherwood CC. Upon arrival, the entrants were met by the smiling team of Sue Kinsling and Susan Stone, who made registration quick and simple. The organization and thoughtfulness of the parking team, led by Ted Lighthizer, provided easy access onto the lawn. In no time, the 38 judged and 24 display cars were directed into their

Jim Brown, emcee for the day, welcomed everyone and announced what to expect throughout the event. The air was filled with music provided by DSR Audio. The concours chair especially appreciated the variety of Disney tributes. The group of judges was led by Dick Douglass and included Alfred Abken, Bill Clevenger, Linda Cobarrubias, Michael Dolphin, Carolyn Ewbank, Ted Lighthizer, Brett Mohr, Joe & Karen Nedza, Doc Pryor, Steve Vinning, Robert Watt, Pat & Betsy Wadman, Jeff Waxman and Dave & Linda Yerzley. Providing timing assistance were Aaron Milgrim, Daryl Haus and Lisa Watt. The complex task of scoring was done by Anita Banke and Tom Marshall. After the call for “light dusting only,” participants from Santa Barbara Region, Los Angeles Region, Grand Prix Region, and Orange Coast Region waited with bated breath for their cars to be judged and admired the beautiful trophies in anticipation of a win. Some entrants took a brief respite from the stress of being judged by taking the opportunity to catch up with good friends, meet new friends and enjoy the lineup of cars. The models included everything from two 1956 356 Speedsters to two 2016 60th Anniversary PCA Club Coupes. There was time also to inspect the offerings of the Goodie Store, which included commemorative shirts.

Ears perked up at Jim Brown’s announcement that lunch was ready. A short walk to the main clubhouse paid off in spades when the buffet of tantalizing choices was revealed in the dining room. It was difficult to decide which was better, the food or the view. Without a doubt, both were exceptional. After lunch, the drawing for the 50/50 Raffle was held. Tickets were sold throughout the day by Wendy Brown and Pamuela Hodson. The lucky winner, Warren Desmond, generously donated a portion of his winnings back to our 2016 charity, the Makea-Wish Foundation. SBR President Mike Hodson thanked Rusnak Westlake Porsche for their sponsorship of this special event. Appreciation was also expressed to the Sherwood Country Club, to DSR Audio for the fantastic sound system, and to all the volunteers who helped so much to ensure that the event was a success. The highly anticipated award presentation began with the announcement of the class winners and their scores. Tara Brundrett enjoyed presenting the awards to each recipient. There was one tie for Class and two ties for Division, which showed how close the competition truly was. At the conclusion of the event, the parking team guided everyone safely off the lawn to enjoy the rest of their day. Once again, thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors. Without you, this event could not happen. We look forward to seeing everyone at SBR’s 2016 Concours d’Elegance, our 40th annual! =

The Tech Report

Porsche 991.2 BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

H

ardcore Porsche enthusiasts tend to be an obstinate lot, eyeing any update to their beloved rear-engined sports car platform with suspicion. To some, the 356B of 1960 completely neutered the lively handling of its predecessors. The “new” 901/911 of 1965 was far too soft and luxurious. The impact-bumpered 1974 911 was a travesty, as was the 964 (Porsche had the audacity to install power steering!). It is possible that the introduction of the water-cooled 996 caused minor shifts in global money markets, as did the 2012 991 with its electronic power steering. As is often said, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The next “new” Porsche 911 Carrera was recently introduced at the annual Frankfurt Auto Show as a 2017 model. While this “991.2” (the unofficial parlance for the second generation of the 991 chassis) appears to be a mere evolution of the popular 991.1, a profound change has occurred at the rear of the car. No, not the vertical grille slats on the engine lid (more on that later). The big news is that both the base Carrera and Carrera S models now sport twin-turbocharged engines. Those who regularly read automotive publications have likely noticed the paradigm shift by automakers to smallerdisplacement, turbocharged engines as a means of satisfying various government fuel economy and exhaust emissions mandates. The idea is that most commuters’ regular driving occurs in the cruising range, during which the extra displacement of a larger engine is wasted. A smallAUSPUFF NOVEMBER 2O15

er engine uses less fuel while cruising at lower RPM, but the addition of forced induction via turbocharging endows such an engine with the torque and horsepower that is demanded by modern drivers. Modern electronics and direct fuel injection (see the April 2014 issue for more information) mean that much-dreaded turbo lag is largely negated. Nonetheless, the turbocharging of the mainstream Porsche 911 may cause much consternation among Porsche purists. Porsche has long been renowned for its flagship “Turbo” models, but a raucous, high revving, naturally-aspirated, flatsix engine with a stirring exhaust note has always been the calling card of the mainstream 911. To some, the prospect of muting its exhaust note and softening its throttle response with a pair of turbochargers may be too much to bear. But even Porsche has to evolve with the times, and its fans can rest assured that its application of forced induction to the 911 Carrera will not be half-baked. The 991.1 Carrera and Carrera S employed 3.4-liter and 3.8-liter engines respectively. The 991.1 engine was a pure high-RPM machine, with the peak torque figures of 288 ft-lbs (base) and 325 ft-lbs (S) each occurring at a lofty 5600 RPM. The base 3.4 liter engine, in particular, had to be revved hard to achieve maximum performance. The 991.2 Carrera and Carrera S each use a 3.0-liter version of the same engine. A 10.0:1 compression ratio affords strong off-boost acceleration, but the

big news is that the peak torque of each engine (331 lb-ft for the Carrera, 368 lb-ft for the Carrera S) occurs as soon as 1700 RPM and lasts all the way until 5000 RPM! However, a redline of 7500 RPM ensures that Porsche’s high-RPM DNA remains intact. According to Porsche’s press kit, the base and S engines are identical, save for larger turbo compressor wheels, a freerflowing exhaust system and engine management software changes for the more powerful S engine. For each 991.2 engine, the fuel injection pressure of the 991.2 engine has been nearly doubled to over 3,600 PSI for better fuel atomization, and the injectors have been relocated to the “top” of each cylinder head (near the spark plug) to promote better combustion of the injected fuel. Turbocharged engines require cooling of the charge air via intercooling, which requires space. Previous 911 Turbo models featured prominent rear wings and/ or rear fender vents to allow a sufficient amount of ambient air to enter and exit said intercoolers. The 991.2 Carrera mod-

As outlined in the August 2014 article about turbocharging, turbo “lag” is one of the downsides of turbocharging. To provide the new Carrera lineup with sharp throttle response, Porsche had a trick up its sleeve. Porsche engines have long featured VarioCam variable camshaft timing of the intake camshafts, along with VarioCam Plus two-stage intake valve lifters.

The 2014 991 GT3 was the first Porsche engine to be additionally equipped with VarioCam adjustment of the exhaust camshaft timing, which has also been added to new 991.2 engine. Beyond improving engine efficiency and reducing emissions, the ability to change exhaust camshaft timing on the fly enables a clever way to fight turbo lag by reducing the amount of time it takes for the turbochargers to “spool up” and provide full boost pressure to the intake tract. When the driver lifts off of the throttle of the 991.2, the exhaust camshaft timing is retarded, which means that the exhaust valves open very late during the exhaust stroke; ignition timing is also retarded. Once the exhaust valves open, the additional compression and heat created by the late exhaust valve and ignition timing allow the turbine wheel of the turbocharger to remain spinning at 30-40,000

RPM. The turbocharger wastegates remain open so that no boost pressure is created. Once the throttle is re-opened, the wastegates close, and the turbos can rapidly spin up to their 100,000+ RPM peak speed and create boost. The turbochargers and their associated plumbing add 77 pounds to the rear of the car, but a lighter exhaust system and other changes such as a lighter engine case and oil pump and a plastic (!) oil sump mean that the 991.2 weighs about 45 pounds more than a comparable 991.1. Transmission choices remain the same, with 7-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic (PDK) gearboxes available.

Besides the headlining engine changes, the 991.2 features commensurate upgrades to the chassis. For the first time ever, PASM electronically adjustable dampers (shock absorbers) are standard across the board, with a 10MM lower ride height compared to the 991.1. An optional hydraulic lift system for the front end is available to cope with the speed bumps, driveways, and dips of the real world. And, as predicted by your intrepid technical correspondent, rear wheel steering will be offered as an option on the Carrera S (see the January 2015 issue for more info).

mobile services such as Apple CarPlay and Google Maps are available. The 991.2 may also be used as a mobile hotspot for WiFi devices. Now, to address the elephant in the room: How does it sound? Your author got to see and hear a pair of prototype 991.2s circulate Laguna Seca raceway at the recent Rennsport Reunion V gathering of Porsches. The base 991.2 Carrera’s exhaust note was certainly muted (though the car featured an actual manual transmission!), but the Carrera S featured the optional Sports exhaust system, with its larger, more closely spaced tailpipes harking back to the factory sports exhaust pipes of early, air-cooled 911s. The Sports exhaust did have a nice bark at higher RPM (additional flaps open at above 4000 RPM), but it is not quite as sonorous as its normally aspirated predecessor. As a slight concession, the 991.2 does have a “sound symposer” system, in which induction noise is piped into the cockpit. Press-ready examples of the 991.2 will not be available until early next year, so time will tell if Porsche has succeeded in its goal of masking the effect of the turbocharge installation. But if past results are an indicator of future performance, expect the 991.2 to be a typically awesome Porsche sports car! =

The exterior and interior of the 991.2 feature typical mid-cycle styling updates to distinguish it from the earlier 991. The updated cockpit features an improved infotainment system with connectivity capabilities that are demanded by today’s consumers. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) now features a touchscreen interface and voice command, and

els do not feature such regalia, instead relying on the existing engine lid grille to ingest cooling air. The visually jarring vertical orientation of the grille slats serves to better promote airflow to the tightly packaged intercoolers. After passing through the intercoolers, the air exits through rectangular slots in each outer corner of the rear bumper cover.

Picture This - Retired Zone 8 Rep Michael Dolphin and SBR Editor John Alfenito both love to take pictures. At any Porsche event from a concours...to the L.A. Auto Show...to a Porsche Parade, you’re likely to see one of them snapping away. Naturally, over the years both of these guys have attended multiple events at the same time. Neither is sure how it got started, but the two began taking pictures of each other taking pictures. It’s happened so many times, it’s become a running joke that has turned into a tradition. At this year’s SBR Concours, John once again took a shot of Michael, who was taking a picture of him. Luckily, John asked Ted Lighthizer to take the center photo (above) of Michael (left) and John (right) without their cameras pressed to their faces.
