‘Tis The Season
T
he holiday season is upon us, like a tidal wave breaking over our heads. It seems that every year, the commercialization begins a bit earlier. Merchants, hungry for sales, begin decorating and displaying red and green stuff early in October. However, it is pleasing to note that several large retailers are taking “the high road” and waiting until late November to begin their holiday promotions. For those of us who were around “back in the day,” the Friday after Thanksgiving was always the traditional start of the annual frenzy. Enlarging the shopping season doesn’t seem to promote quality, just fatigue. When I was growing up, the holidays were quite different at our house. Mom would knock herself out decorating the house with handmade crafts. Neighborhood caroling spread holiday cheer in a very personal way. Gift opening was slowly paced with special emphasis on whom the gift was from. The major presents were always saved until the end, when anticipation and excitement were at their peak. The lesson was clear: Take the time to appreciate your gifts; it makes them all that much better.
MIKE HODSON
Every year my Dad and I would visit Robinson’s Department Store to pick out that special outfit for Mom. He would always select something bright and colorful because that was what he
liked. My job was to redirect his enthusiasm and choose something Mom would enjoy wearing. The colors were subtle, the style classic, just right for the conservative dresser. The sales ladies were amazed that some freckle-faced kid would make the purchase decision, with Dad writing the check. The teamwork paid off, as Mom loved her gift almost as much as we loved giving it to her. Pamuela and I worked hard to instill similar values in our children. Teaching them the joy of giving was a relatively easy task. Their upbeat personalities and innate desire to please meld perfectly with the spirit of generosity. We were flabbergasted when Julie gave us a trip to Ireland several years ago. They both understand that it is better to give than to receive. During this very busy time of year, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. Too many things to do, too many people to see, and too many expectations to (maybe) fulfill. We used to make ourselves crazy trying to be everywhere and do everything, all at the same time. Once we slowed down and spent quality time with those dear to us, the holiday season once again became enjoyable, something to look forward to every year. The Hodson family is incredibly fortunate. We have our health, our wonderful loving family and marvelous friends, many of whom are in PCA-SBR. When we joined PCA almost 15 years ago, I had no idea what a magical journey we were embarking upon. This is the season where we take the time to appreciate all of our family and friends. We hope that everyone in the Santa Barbara Region enjoys this holiday season and what makes it so special.

SBR’s Year in Review In January, SBR’s traditional Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend excursion took 50 club members to Rancho Mirage. The long weekend adventure included visits to the Living Desert in nearby Palm Desert, Idyllwild, and many other notable spots in and around the Palm Springs area. The three Missions of Santa Barbara County were the focus of a day-trip in February. Mission La Purisima Concepcion, Mission Santa Ines, and the Santa Barbara Mission were explored and explained with a stop at Buellton’s famous Pea Soup Andersen’s restaurant worked into the mix. 69 members and guests made this journey of discovery with the club.
year in a row SBR held this worthwhile day of instruction. 32 students were put through their paces, learning how to react in various situations they might encounter while behind the wheel. In June we also staged our everpopular “Gimmick Rally.” As usual, the JOHN ALFENITO course was fun, and the sites to make note of were entertaining. Correcting the score sheets at the barbecue lunch which followed the rally proved to be another highlight of an always fun day. Again in 2015, SBR took part in the City of Santa Barbara’s Fourth of July Parade. Our decorated Porsches were loudly cheered by the crowds as we slowly moved up State Street. This is a great event that has become a new tradition.
The color of money may have been part of “the draw” for March’s “Porsche Poker Run.” This now annual event attracted 70+ players picking up poker cards at multiple stops along the backroads of Ventura County. Once again this year, the top hands divided a generous “pot,” and everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch at Dos Vientos Community Park. The California Festival of Speed in April is always a PCA favorite, and scores of SBR members were in attendance in Fontana. Our region also sponsored a tour of the magnificent Getty Villa in Malibu with 62 members enjoying the exquisite grounds as well as the classic works of art and sculpture.
Also in July, 73 club members embarked on the “Drive, Wine & Dine” tour, eventually landing in Los Alamos for a luncheon stop. The Progressive Dinner in August with 85 participants was once again one of the club’s most popular activities. Traveling from Camarillo to Simi Valley to Moorpark, we enjoyed good friends and great food on a perfect afternoon and evening. In June, at the annual Porsche Parade in French Lick, Indiana, SBR’s reign as “Region of the Year” came to a close. However, our club scored yet again when Der Auspuff was named the National Newsletter Award winner as the best monthly publication in all of PCA!
In September, the pre-concours Detail Clinic was held at the beautiful facilities of Lavaggio in Agoura Hills.
Also in April, the SBR Autocross returned to the Camarillo Airport. Unfortunately, a full morning of practice runs could not be followed by timed runs in the afternoon because rain and wind made the track too slippery to continue. Refunds were offered, and another AX was scheduled for November.
And for the 19th year in a row(!), SBR gathered for our annual Chili Cook-Off. More than 80 participants sampled and judged several chili recipes carefully crafted by our competitive chefs. A grand time was had by all, and the Lady Scoville Memorial Trophy” (for chili excellence) was awarded to the winner.
Our good friends at Rusnak Westlake Porsche held an exclusive Service Clinic for our region in May. Members were able to have their Porsches inspected by Rusnak’s Porsche specialists free of charge.
October’s signature event was the 39th Annual Concours d’Elegance held this year at the beautiful Sherwood Country Club in Lake Sherwood. A record number of Porsches were in competition for trophies, and the display field was full, as well, with many unique vehicles.
In June, our region hosted the Tire Rack Street Survival School for teenaged drivers at the Camarillo Airport. This was the fourth
November’s Autocross is covered in this issue, and the Grape Harvest Wine Tour will appear in the JAN edition, as will coverage of our Holiday Brunch coming up this month. 2015 was another active and entertaining year for us. Check the schedule for 2016 activities, and make your plans to join us for more SBR adventures in the year ahead!

SBR’s Memorial Day Weekend trip put the club on the road to our national parks in Utah and Arizona. Zion Canyon, the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, and Bryce Canyon were visited on three consecutive days. 40 members and friends made the trip, which generated hundreds of spectacular photos and memories that will last a lifetime.

T
hirty-three members of R.U.F. (Retired & Unemployed Folks) enjoyed another interesting tour in downtown Los Angeles under the auspices of the well-run Los Angeles Conservancy. We departed on the Metrolink from the Moorpark station on October 22nd and enjoyed a scenic trip into Union Station. After a quick subway ride on the red line, we were met by our docents at the foot of Angel’s Flight. Our tour was aptly entitled “Historic Downtown.” Angel’s Flight, which is currently not in use for safety reasons, dates back to 1901 and holds the distinction of being the world’s shortest railway. There are only two cars. Its original purpose was to transport people between their Bunker Hill homes and the shopping and business districts on Broadway. Crossing Broadway, we entered the Grand Central Market with its array of vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and a variety of prepared foods. There are also many restaurants, including one very popular spot with the intriguing name of “Egg Slut.” The market has become very upscale in recent years and is a busy and popular place. The next part of our tour included two landmark structures: the Million Dollar Theater and the Bradbury building. The theater (so named because it cost a million dollars to build) is in the Beaux Arts design and features the characteristic ornate frieze. Built in 1918 by Sid Grauman, it featured live theater as well as silent films. Across the street is the stunning edifice of the Bradbury building. Constructed in 1896, it has been used for offices continuously since that time, an unusual distinction in Los Angeles. The architectural hallmark of this building is its open atrium with ornate wrought iron stairways and balustrades, which ascend to the rooftop. There is also an elaborate wrought iron elevator and letter drop. The interior has been featured in many movies. We exited the Bradbury into a pocket park honoring freed slave Biddy Mason, who once owned and lived on the acre parcel. From there we proceeded to the 417 Metro building, which still has tracks underneath it. It was also built in the Beaux Arts style and features a beautiful mosaic over the entry that glorified transportation and manufacturing. This was once a busy streetcar depot serving many of the outlying areas of Los Angeles. AUSPUFF DECEMBER 2O15

On the way to our final destination, Pershing Square, our docent pointed out that many of the original buildings in Los Angeles did not exceed 13 stories, thereby avoiding the canyon-like feel of many large cities. On our walk to the square, we passed the beautiful Biltmore Hotel. Pershing Square has gone through many iterations since it was first dedicated in 1866. One interesting historical footnote concerns its once vast stand of trees. In the mid 1950’s, a substantial portion of the

trees were sold and transplanted to a new amusement park in Orange County. That new park was Disneyland. The square currently features an elevated amphitheater and a small grove of orange trees, which pays tribute to Los Angeles’ agricultural roots. We ended our outing with lunch at the newly reopened Clifton’s Cafeteria with its multiple levels, redwood tree and store of memorabilia from its many years of operation. This was a busy and somewhat frenzied experience because of the crowds, but we were all able to enjoy the food and visit with friends. This was followed by a relaxing train ride home where many members were observed catching some shuteye -- something you can’t do driving on the freeway after a long day! =

CAMARILLO AUTOCROSS STORY BY STEVE FERRARI EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO
O
n November 14, 2015, SBR held its second autocross of the year, with 46 registered drivers and 35 different Porsches. The weather cooperated by giving us a perfect day with little wind and moderate temperatures. No sighting of El Niño yet!
We had a fun course that averaged just over a minute to complete. We were able to get in four practice runs before we had lunch from Q-Time Barbecue. Aaron Johnson always delivers great food for all. The three timed runs started right after lunch, and we finished on time at about 3:30. After picking up the course, most of the volunteers were headed home around 4:00. Nine drivers took advantage of pre-event tech inspections. A big thank-you is extended to Rusnak Porsche in Westlake and Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara for providing this complimentary service to our drivers. All of those who volunteered as coaches are also much appreciated. The newer drivers not only had a day of fun but also learned the ins and outs of autocrossing. I also wish to thank the 15 club members who volunteered for the day. Some who require special mention are the early birds who took care of registration, including Larry Stoops, Daniel Long, Bob Bassett and Gary Olmstead; Chris Andropoulos and Cristopher Arreola, who
ran the Tech Inspection; and Chet Yabitsu, who shuttled drivers to their positons on the track. Special thanks are extended to the timing team of Jeff Parker, Jeffrey Merrick, William Griswold and Mike Hodson. Their planning and execution ensured a flawless day of accurate timing. One volunteer in particular exemplifies what Porsche drivers who become PCA members are all about. Gary Olmstead acquired his Porsche just three weeks ago and became an SBR member one week later. He came out on Friday for course setup and, for the Autocross on Saturday, arrived early and departed late. Gary helped me by being the “keeper of the gate pass” and even did a run to the store to buy a battery for our microphone. He came to watch and learn and has vowed to drive the next Autocross. One driver, Don Dickey, also requires special mention (although it’s really his car that deserves all the credit). Don brought his 2012 Boxster Spyder to the event. For those of you who attended the Concours, you will remember his winning car. Don also won his Autocross category. He and his car have done what Porsche drivers and Porsche cars are meant to do. The cars (and drivers) really clean up nice, but they’re happiest when they’re exercised. Last but not least, I want to acknowledge my co-chair, Brian Rubino, as he rides off into the sunset to relocate in Texas. Brian was invaluable with planning, logistics and obtaining trophies as well as running the grid to get the drivers to the starting line. He was a great help to me this year, and I will miss his friendship as well as his assistance. I look forward to our next Autocross in the spring, which is planned for Saturday, April 23, 2016. =

The Mission E Concept
Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
T
he relative success of the Tesla Model S has put the automotive world on notice that a number of affluent buyers are willing to pay for a prestige electric car in an effort to appear “green” and eco-conscious. Generous government subsidies also help! Furthermore, auto manufacturers are under constant regulatory pressure to reduce the average fossil fuel consumption of their entire product line, which encourages the development of alternative-powered vehicles, even from unexpected marques. At the 2015 Frankfurt International Auto Show, Porsche unveiled an all-electric concept car with much fanfare and with several bold claims about expected per-
formance and its high-tech features. While this could be viewed as concept car smokeand-mirror tactics, Porsche’s track record, conservative performance numbers, and the recent success with the 919 Hybrid race car may prove otherwise. The notion of a Porsche electric-only car is not without precedent, as Dr. Ferdinand Porsche’s first automobile design, the Lohner-Porsche, was an all-electric car. Introduced at the dawn of the 20th century, the Lohner-Porsche featured hub-mounted electric motors. But as is still the case today, the battery technology of the time severely limited its driving range, and an internal combustion engine was later added to extend its range. The new Mission E concept, as it is called, is a high-performance, four-door
sedan. It has a very sleek, futuristic look that is defined by its low 1300 mm (51.2”) height and classic Porsche design cues. A clean-sheet, electric-only chassis requires neither a transmission tunnel nor concessions for an exhaust system, and large front grille openings are not needed due to the lack of heat exchangers such as the radiator and oil coolers/intercoolers required by modern internal combustion engines. Porsche has not quoted any coefficient of drag (cd) figures for the Mission E, but expect it to be very slippery indeed. A close inspection of the body also reveals outlets to extract high pressure from the front wheel wells, aerodynamic side skirts, and a rear diffuser, all of which should help reduce aerodynamic lift. No exterior mirrors are present. Instead, aft-facing remote Continued on pages 22 & 23

sion design appears to be a similar upper and lower A-arm front and multi-link rear arrangement as in the Panamera. Brakes appear to be oversized in typical Porsche fashion and are framed by 21” front and 22’’ rear wheels. However, the brakes aren’t used much during normal driving, as the electrical motors create drag during declaration and, therefore, perform braking and regenerative duties.
Continued from page 21
cameras are used, and their images are displayed in the lower corners of the windshield. Porsche has not stated a target curb weight for the Mission E, but expect it to be light for its size. The chassis itself is a mixture of carbon fiber, aluminum, and various grades of high-strength steel. The “Weissach Frame” passenger cell is made of carbon fiber, and Porsche claims that it is rigid enough to allow for the elimination of the B-pillar. This in turn allows for the dramatic “suicide” rear door configuration for easy access to the rear seats, which are individual racing-style bucket seats in the same fashion of the front seats. The key feature of the Mission E is its 800-volt electrical system. This is twice the voltage produced by the electrical system of Porsche’s own E-Hybrid models (Panamera, Cayenne, and 918) and of any existing electric cars, including the Tesla Model S. The main reason for the voltage increase is the ability to rapidly charge the battery pack. Porsche claims that the Mission E’s battery can be brought from near zero to an 80% charge level in less than 15 minutes by using its special 800V “Turbocharging” apparatus. The charge port itself is cleverly hidden behind a retractable panel in the left front fender. Inductive charging is also possible if the car is driven onto a special platform, albeit at a slower rate. While Porsche has stated no plans for a Tesla-like public charging station infrastructure to support the 800V requirement, one can assume that a home “Turbocharging” station would be offered. Another advantage of the 800V system is that it allows the use of high-voltage cables that are half as thick as those of a 400V system, which saves weight and space.
Regardless of the charging logistics, Porsche claims some impressive performance figures: 600 horsepower, 0-62 MPH in less than 3.5 seconds, and the all-important Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time of less than 8 minutes. All of this is remarkable given Porsche’s claim of a 500 kilometer (310 mile) driving range. It must be said, however, that this claim is based on the European Union EV drive cycle, which is approximately 15% more generous than the equivalent US EPA drive cycle. The battery pack is integrated into the flat floor of the Mission E to allow for a low center of gravity, and it is a stressed member of the chassis, which greatly increases rigidity. It is assumed that said battery pack is an evolved version of the lithium-ion battery pack that is currently offered in the E-Hybrid models, but with the requisite increase in the amount of cells to allow for 800V. Propulsion is provided by an electric motor for each axle, making the Mission E an all-wheel-drive affair. These motors are AC permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), the use of which was proven in the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid race car. Compared with the conventional AC induction motor(s) used in the Tesla Model S, a PMSM has higher energy density and efficiency and is able to withstand repeated full-power applications. Conventional induction motors can overheat and lose efficiency during such use. The dual electric motors make it easy for Porsche to seamlessly integrate its PSM stability management and traction control systems, and rear-axle steering is present to further aid agility at lower speeds and stability at higher speeds. The suspen-
Porsche insists that the Mission E is strictly a concept car, but the word on the strasse is that it or something similar will see production by 2019 or 2020. It remains to be seen if it will share a platform with a version of the internally combustionengined Panamera or if it will be a standalone model. Regardless, the eventual realization of the Mission E should be an interesting package, and it will certainly be the Porsche of electric sports cars! =

The Mission E Concept
In typical show car fashion, the Mission E concept has some fanciful interior features. The prominent 5-gauge instrument panel uses OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology. The OLED displays are able to change their angle according to the driver’s position by using eye-tracking cameras. The same technology is purported to allow the driver to access various settings menus by glancing at the relevant display and confirming their selection with the push of a button. Whether eye-tracking technology will work if the driver wears sunglasses or during low-light situations is anyone’s guess at this point, but it sure sounds cool!
