Believe In Yourself
L
ife is full of challenges. They can come from many different sources, some of which we can control; others are beyond our comprehension or our control. Challenges can result from being in the wrong place at the wrong time or having a poor hand of “life” cards dealt to us. Such challenges may seem totally unfair, with the question “Why me?” being asked.
MIKE HODSON
Dealing with adversity is not always a simple matter of meeting the problem head-on and taking care of it. Solutions can be elusive. Sometimes all the choices are bad, and you have to choose the least painful of many painful options. Sorting through the concurrent emotions can be difficult and, at times, impossible. My dad faced daunting challenges with my mom as she struggled with serious emotional problems. Possessing great courage and strength, he helped our family get through the toughest times, never complaining and never expressing any self-pity. In his own mind, there was never a doubt as to the outcome; everything was going to be all right at the end of the day. And it was.
One of his favorite expressions was “It takes a hot fire to make strong steel.” He grew up in Detroit during the Depression, survived combat during WW II, then started and ran a medium- sized business. He stood very close to the fire many times and was no stranger to challenges. He wasn’t one to dwell on a problem; he was too busy figuring out a solution. Throughout my life, the lesson was clear: Believe in yourself. No matter what curve balls life throws at you, analyze the situation, formulate a plan and do the best you can. The outcome may not be good, but knowing that you have done your best keeps you moving forward. Life for me has been incredibly fortunate. Excellent genetics have granted me good health, which I try never to take for granted. Hard work and sacrifices made by my parents allowed me to grow up in a warm, loving, secure home, with not a care in the world. Meeting, courting, and (finally!) marrying Pamuela has been the most wonderful thing in my life. Challenges for me have been mostly self-inflicted, based on poor decisions. All of the challenges have helped me to grow stronger, knowing that whatever life brings, I will be able to face the situation. “Absol fiducia” – believe in yourself.

The R.U.F. Report
Camaril o’s Best Kept Secret STORY BY JEANNE McNAIR EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO
T
he December R.U.F. outing to the World War II Aviation Museum attracted 40+ attendees on a beautiful, cool and crisp day the week before Christmas. This museum, located at the Camarillo Airport, is housed in three hangars abutting a ramp area. Planes are located in the display hangars and outside on the ramp as well as in the maintenance hangar. The museum is administered by the Commemorative Air Force Southern California Wing, which is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of combat aircraft flown by the military services of the United States. We were given a docent-led tour of the museum, and we were all impressed not only by the encyclopedic knowledge of the docents but also by their evident enthusiasm for the aircraft and history of each.

is accomplished. Of particular note, we observed a PBJ (Patrol Bomber) manufactured by North American, which is the Navy equivalent of the iconic B-25. There were originally about 10,000 B-25s made, with only 600 allocated to the Navy. The PBJs were used only in the Pacific Theater. This particular plane has been under active restoration for 22 years, and the electrical circuitry is almost complete. This means the engines may be started for the first time in 22 years! Out on the ramp, we saw several planes, including a P-51 Mustang which was representative of the planes that played such a crucial role in winning the air war in World War II. This plane had tiger stripes on the top and camouflage on the bottom; since the U.S. dominated the air, camouflage was unnecessary on the top. There are also 17 swastikas on the canopy, representing kills. This plane is operational and is used for commercial rides at $1,495 a trip.
Also on the ramp was a Japanese Zero, which our docent pointed out was one of the most maneuverable planes in the war. A captured Zero allowed analysis of the plane, which was used by Grumman when it developed the Hellcat. This was seen as a turning point in the Pacific air war because the Hellcat was so effective against the Zeros. There were some interesting examples of what is called “Nose Art,” mostly attractive female images with names such as “Executive Sweet” and “China Doll.” Our docent observed that Nose Art was officially against the regulations, but the Army did it anyway. This museum was a delightful treasure trove of World War II planes enhanced by the historical information provided by some very knowledgeable docents. Many attendees commented on what a great local venue this was, one they’d never before visited despite its central location. =
Our first stop on the tour was at the maintenance hangar. It is in this location that active restoration and maintenance of the museum‘s store of aircraft

Our hotel, the beautiful Glorietta Bay Inn, was just across the street from the famous Hotel del Coronado. The Glorietta Bay Inn reserved its entire back parking lot exclusively for our Porsches, creating an instant “secure car show” for the hotel’s other guests.
The docent-led tour of The Del included a photo op at the special huge chair the hotel had built for the visit of our “largest” president, Howard Taft (Joe & Veronica Linden tried it out). Dinner on Friday evening was at Vigilucci’s Italian Restaurant.
Saturday morning, we were off again on a docent-led tour of the neighborhoods around The Del. The rich history of the “island” was fascinating. Then, a walking progressive restaurant tour of Orange Avenue brought us to several different local eateries. AUSPUFF FEBRUARY 2O16

We gathered on the morning of the 15th in Westlake Village and then proceeded south to San Juan Capistrano for our lunch break. The El Adobe restaurant’s Mexican cuisine was perfect, and served in a room reserved exclusively for our club. We even had an entire parking lot solely at our disposal. Once fed and watered, we proceeded south to San Diego, past downtown, and onto the Coronado Bridge. Arriving on the island, we turned left onto Orange Avenue and took it to its end. On the right was the world-famous Hotel del Coronado, and on the left was our host hotel, the Glorietta Bay Inn. Again, we had an entire parking lot for our exclusive use. (On this trip, our cars were no longer needed during the entire weekend as everything on the island was within walking distance or part of the organized trolley tour of the island and downtown San Diego.) The main section of the Glorietta was at one time a private home, the Spreckles Mansion, spectacular in every detail. The main lobby was the venue for our daily breakfasts and afternoon refreshments. The waterfront views as well as the unique visuals of The Del were welcoming and very interesting. By 3:30 that afternoon, we regrouped in front of The Del for a docent-led tour of the historic hotel. Details of the property’s history, the landmark’s construction, and efforts to preserve its iconic image were fully discussed and explained in fascinating detail. Before we knew it, dinner time was upon us. A short walk and we reached Vigilucci’s Italian Restaurant. Once again, a private room overlooking the ocean was available to us. We feasted on chicken parmigiana, gnocchi or salmon entrees plus, of course, tiramisu for dessert. Fully stuffed, many of us walked the main drag in front of the restaurant, while others returned to the Glorietta and hung around in the lobby to enjoy the chatter of friends. Saturday was walking day. We started our morning with a docent-led walking tour of the historic mansions and neighborhoods of the island. We passed by the site of the old Tent City, the castles and cottages that line the beautiful beach, and recounted the stories of moguls and movie stars, Navy pilots and SEALs – all part of the 100-plus years history of the island. At midafternoon we participated in another walking tour, this

In effect, we had a progressive dinner that included olive oil and wine tasting along the main streets of the downtown area, a rare and extremely rewarding experience. Sunday had a different feel to it as we boarded the Old Town Trolley – on our own individual schedules – for a guided tour of downtown San Diego and other sections of the island. We were able to “hop on and off” along the entire route, affording us the opportunity to concentrate on personal points of interest. The most popular spots included Balboa Park, the Old Town Market, Seaport Village, the Gaslamp Quarter, and Little Italy. Each of us made it back in time to savor the cuisine of the Bluewater Grill, specializing in seafood, and to take part in one more festive gathering. Most of us returned home on Monday, although a handful decided to spend another night at the Glorietta and depart Tuesday morning. Regardless of date of departure, all had a great and memorable long weekend, the kind of adventure for which SBR is famous. The upcoming Memorial Day Weekend tour to San Francisco and the Bay Area promises to be exciting, educational, and very satisfying. wice each year, SBR members enjoy a long weekend journey to diverse and interesting destinations. The Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in January and the Memorial Day weekend at the end of May provide our members with opportunities to spend a few days together visiting sites that require more than a one-day program. This year’s first multi-day adventure was set for January 15 –18, and the chosen location was San Diego’s Coronado Island. 46 club members took part in yet another memorable event.

CORONADO ISLAND On Sunday, many in our group took a trolley tour of San Diego, while others exercised their Porsches for personal excursions around the area. This is a shot taken from Point Loma, looking back across the entrance to San Diego Harbor. The city skyline is at center and the beaches of Coronado are on the right. The North Island Naval Air Station is at the harbor’s entrance (center).
Each morning, the Glorietta Bay Inn served a continental breakfast, which we enjoyed on the patios surrouding the hotel’s main lobby. On Sunday evening, we dined in style at the Bluewater Boathouse on the water in the Coronado Island Marina.
Our own private room upstairs at the Bluewater Boathouse gave us all the perfect chance to relax and share stories of our wonderful weekend on Coronado Island. AUSPUFF FEBRUARY 2O16

SBR Memorial Day By The Bay
SBR Goes To San Francisco May 27-30, 2016
Come join us for SBR’s annual Memorial Day weekend getaway when we travel north to the beautiful and exciting San Francisco Bay area. This weekend trip will start with a scenic drive up Highway 101 to our base at the Bay Landing Hotel located in Burlingame, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The hotel, which is situated right on the bay, has scenic views, and provides a complimentary breakfast. We’ve obtained discounted room rates of $159/night and parking is free. Friday evening, we will leave our Porsches parked and walk to the nearby El Torito restaurant for a relaxing dinner reception. On Saturday, we will travel as a group to the lovely estate, Filoli, which is nestled amongst stunning gardens in the verdant town of Woodside on the San Francisco peninsula. The house and grounds are part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, one of only two such designated properties in California. Built by the owner of the Empire Gold Mine, Filoli is recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. We will have a docent-led tour followed by a catered lunch on the grounds. After our meal, we will depart for a spirited and very scenic drive through stands of redwoods over the San Andreas mountains to the rugged beauty of the coast and through picturesque towns such as Pescadoro and Half Moon Bay. Saturday dinner will be on your own to travel into San Francisco or to explore the upscale shopping and dining in downtown Burlingame or other peninsula towns such as Palo Alto.
On Sunday morning, a chartered bus will pick us up at our hotel for a guided tour of San Francisco, including a crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County. Our itinerary has been planned by the very popular Blue Heron Tour company and will include a lunch break at Pier 39, where there are many dining options to choose from. Later on Sunday, we will meet at Il Fornaio restaurant in Burlingame for a farewell dinner. The cost for the weekend is $215 per person, which includes two dinners, one lunch, admission fee and guide at Filoli, chartered bus and tour guide fees as well as the activity fee. Because of the size of the tour bus, enrollment must be limited to 54 people for this event. If you are interested in attending, complete the enrollment form below and send it with your fee to John & Jeanne McNair, 1091 Belleza Street, Camarillo, CA 93012. Please note that no refunds can be made after May 6, 2016. To reserve your room and receive the discounted rate, please call the Bay Landing Hotel at 866-783-9612 and identify yourself as a PCA member or reference “reservation #3413.” The hotel’s cutoff for the discounted rate is May 6, 2016. Further details on departure location and time will be provided to those who enroll. Please make checks payable to PCA/SBR and book this trip early!

The Tech Report
PORSCHE’S LED HEADLIGHTS ARTICLE BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
T
he exponential rate of electronics development has greatly benefited the automotive industry, with an increasing amount of the latest technologies finding their way into latemodel automobiles. Unfortunately, the long lead time and expense of developing an entirely new automotive platform has meant that the industry has lagged behind the home and personal electronics industries in the implementation of such technology. A good example of this is modern LED (light-emitting diode) lighting. During the past decade, rapid advances in LED technology have made affordable home LED lighting possible, and it is now becoming commonplace for LEDs to be used in automotive interior and exterior lighting. LED taillights and turn signal lights improve safety and visibility. Besides being much brighter than conventional incandescent bulbs, they also activate in about a tenth of the time LED accent/daytime running lights have also been en vogue for about the past half-dozen years. In addition to the safety benefits of better daytime visibility to other drivers, these stylized LED strips are an attempt by automakers to visually distinguish their model lines in a sea of similarlooking cars. More recently, LED headlights have become commonly available as an option on high-end automobiles; according to industry estimates, 20% of all new cars will be equipped with LED headlights by 2020. The advantages of LED lights over traditional incandescent bulbs and even HID (high-intensity discharge—see the January 2013 Tech Page for more info) lights are manifold. Modern LED headlights consume less power, emit brighter light and are smaller and easier to package than AUSPUFF FEBRUARY 2O16

their halogen and HID forebears, which allows for more distinctive headlight designs, lower hood lines and better aerodynamics.
going into minute detail about electron movement and semiconductors, but a simplistic description is helpful in understanding the benefits of LED technology.
Reduced energy consumption is perhaps the greatest benefit of LED technology. A typical halogen headlight bulb consumes 55 watts of energy, while the average HID bulb uses 35W. Furthermore, both of these designs only convert a small amount (about 5%) of input energy into
A basic LED is composed of a stack of two very thin wafers of semiconductor material (initially, aluminum-gallium-arsenide [AlGaAs] and later, gallium nitride [GaN] in case you were wondering), each of which are chemically altered to regu-

useful light; the rest is wasted as heat energy. Early incarnations of LED headlamps were not quite as bright as the best HID lights, but a modern LED headlight module only uses 12.5W and converts over 20% of this energy into a pure, bright white light that is very close in color to natural daylight, which minimizes human eye strain.
late the flow of electrons when an electrical current is applied to the array. When current is applied to the diode, electrons move from atom to atom, and in doing so, they release energy in the form of photons of light.
So why has it taken so long for LED headlights to become readily available? Unsurprisingly, the cost of such high-tech LED lighting has been the main barrier. However, economies of scale have allowed them to become much more commonplace during the last two model years alone. A full explanation of diodes and LEDs and how they work is difficult without
The most basic of LEDs only emit infrared light that is invisible to the human eye. These infrared LEDs are commonly used in conventional television remote controllers. The first visible LEDs became commercially available in the early 1960s, but they were only useful as small indicator lights for electronic devices and were only available in red or green. Soon, LEDs became commonplace in the form of digital displays for clocks, calculators, and other digital instruments. Since then, the pace of LED develop-
Porsche’s first deployment of LED exterior lighting appeared on the face-lifted 997.2 and 987.2 of the 2009 model year. All 997.2/987.2 models featured LED taillights and turn signals, along with a white LED strip at each front corner for daytime running/accent lighting. The Panamera and Cayenne soon followed suit. For the 2014 model year, LED headlights became optional on all Porsche models except for the Boxster and Cayman.
Plus adds forward-facing cameras that detect other vehicles’ headlights and taillights; if they come within a predetermined range, the high beams are automatically deactivated. Two additional LED arrays are also present for additional high beam function. To equip a new Porsche with these hightech headlights, it costs between $1,900 and $3,500, depending on the model. The LED headlight modules are purported to last “the life of the vehicle” and, as such, are not serviceable. An entire replacement LED headlight assembly costs about $1,000 more than already expensive HID units. Only time will tell if they prove to be reliable, but they should be relatively trouble-free as they do not require the extremely high voltage levels that HID lights need for operation. One of the few weak points of LEDs is that their performance and integrity are very dependent on operating temperature. Instead of radiating heat energy away

The 991.2’s ultra-thin LED DRLs
Each of Porsche’s LED headlight assemblies contains 30 individual LEDs, regardless of the model line, with each LED emitter being only a square millimeter in size. A string of individual LEDs is often used for accent/daytime running light strips, while each of the LED headlamp modules used by Porsche consists of a 1x4 row of LEDs. A ring of four distinctive LED daytime running lights signifies an LED headlight-equipped Porsche, along with the unique, squared-off lens projectors.
from the light source like an incandescent or HID bulb, an LED conducts heat energy though the semiconductor chip itself. Therefore, a finned heat sink is present to dissipate said heat and prevent early failure of the LED. In high-output applications such as automotive headlights, a small electric fan is also required to remove heat from the LED arrays, which negates some of their energy savings.
The lowermost of the headlight projectors is the “basic module,” which is fixed and contains two 1x4 LED headlamp modules. The upper PDLS (Porsche Dynamic Lighting System) module contains a single LED headlight module and is movable to enable the headlights to swivel while the vehicle negotiates turns. Optional PDLS
It should be noted that the electric fan is available as a separate replacement part for Porsche LED headlights. Any failure of the fan or its electrical circuit will likely result in deactivation of the entire headlight to preserve the LEDs. Additionally, the “coolness” of LEDs increases the possibility of headlight lens icing in freezing weather (which is likely
not on the radar of many of the SoCal residents reading this!). While the “wasted” heat energy emitted by incandescent and HID bulbs prevents this from happening, current LED headlight designs are configured so that the cooling fan directs warm air from the LED heat sinks and to the inside of the lens. The headlight fans are also periodically run when the headlights are switched off to prevent condensation from building up inside the headlight assembly. However, it should be stated that automotive LED headlight design is still in its infancy. Future iterations of LED lamps are likely to be brighter and consume even less energy, and alternatives to the cooling fans are being explored by lighting manufacturers. In fact, Porsche’s sister company, Audi, has already introduced the next generation of LED headlights, which the company calls Matrix LED technology. With this design, an array of 50 individual LEDs forms each headlamp. The high beams are always active, but if an oncoming vehicle approaches, this is automatically detected by onboard cameras as with Porsche PDLS Plus; but instead of a rotating drum or a movable shroud, individual LEDs are deactivated to prevent glare to the oncoming driver. This saves space and weight, along with further reducing power consumption. =

ment has rivaled that of the microchip. Continual advances in materials and manufacturing technology have allowed the production of LEDs that emit visible light in a wide array of color and output ranges, with the first high-powered blue LEDs appearing in the early 1990s. The addition of special fluorescent phosphors to high-powered blue LEDs allow them to emit light that appears “white” to the human eye; it is these white LEDs that have allowed their proliferation into the home and automotive lighting markets.

ARTICLE BY STEVE FERRARI, SBR AUTOCROSS CHAIR Saturday, April 23, 2016, the Santa Barbara Region will host an autocross at the Camarillo Airport. This event will be in compliance with Zone 8 rules. However, you don’t need to drive a Porsche to compete in the event. You will need a helmet, and your vehicle must pass tech inspection. See the Zone 8 rules at: http://tinyurl.com/Zone8Rules for more detailed information, especially if your car has been modified. I am encouraging all members, especially those members who have not driven in an autocross before, to register and participate in this event. We are planning for at least 60 drivers. For those of you who are not familiar with how we run an autocross, club members design and create a driving course at the Camarillo Airport. Marked by traffic cones, the course provides drivers an opportunity to take their cars through their paces in a controlled environment. The course is designed not for speed, but more for handling. You really get an opportunity to see how your car handles, and you’ll get to drive your car the way it was meant to be driven. You don’t need any track or autocross experience. In fact, there will be instructors available for in-car instruction. If you do participate, you will come away with a better understanding of how your car handles. For those who have participated previously, the course design this time will be a little less technical. It should take less than a minute to run the course. Registration will again be on-line only. The address for registration is http://tinyurl.com/23AprAutoX-SBR. Via that URL you will be able to get detailed information on the event, get directions, register you and your car, and pay on-line. We won’t be accepting checks or registration through the mail, nor will we be accepting same-day registrations. For those of you who do not plan to drive but would like to volunteer to work the event, I am asking you to also register online using the same address as above. This allows the autocross team to better organize the event, assign responsibilities and provide an accurate count for lunch. I will need volunteers for the welcoming table, tech inspection, organizing cars in the grid area, starter position, timing, course set-up on Friday and manning the course to take care of downed cones. If you volunteer for the whole day, you will be rewarded with a complimentary barbecue lunch! I hope you will consider driving or volunteering for this event. Autocross is the one driving event all members should experience. You’ll enjoy the day whether you are driving or volunteering! =

The Last Word
Thar She Be.. Before calling the January Camarillo Breakfast meeting to order, SBR President Mike Hodson placed his Starbucks coffee cup on the handy spoiler of his cherished 930. Consider for a moment that Starbuck was the Chief Mate on the Pequod (“Moby Dick”) and that a 930 spoiler is widely known as a “whale’s tail,” and you may see the irony in this image. Or, it’s just a handy spot to rest your beverage. Either way, “thar she be.”
