Memorial Day By The Bay

SBR Goes To San Francisco May 27-30, 2016

Come join us for SBR’s annual Memorial Day weekend getaway when we travel north to the beautiful and exciting San Francisco Bay area. This weekend trip will start with a scenic drive up Highway 101 to our base at the Bay Landing Hotel located in Burlingame, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The hotel, which is situated right on the bay, has scenic views, and provides a complimentary breakfast. We’ve obtained discounted room rates of $159/night and parking is free. Friday evening, we will leave our Porsches parked and walk to the nearby El Torito restaurant for a relaxing dinner reception. On Saturday, we will travel as a group to the lovely estate, Filoli, which is nestled amongst stunning gardens in the verdant town of Woodside on the San Francisco peninsula. The house and grounds are part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, one of only two such designated properties in California. Built by the owner of the Empire Gold Mine, Filoli is recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. We will have a docent-led tour followed by a catered lunch on the grounds. After our meal, we will depart for a spirited and very scenic drive through stands of redwoods over the San Andreas mountains to the rugged beauty of the coast and through picturesque towns such as Pescadoro and Half Moon Bay. Saturday dinner will be on your own to travel into San Francisco or to explore the upscale shopping and dining in downtown Burlingame or other peninsula towns such as Palo Alto.

On Sunday morning, a chartered bus will pick us up at our hotel for a guided tour of San Francisco, including a crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County. Our itinerary has been planned by the very popular Blue Heron Tour company and will include a lunch break at Pier 39, where there are many dining options to choose from. Later on Sunday, we will meet at Il Fornaio restaurant in Burlingame for a farewell dinner. The cost for the weekend is $215 per person, which includes two dinners, one lunch, admission fee and guide at Filoli, chartered bus and tour guide fees as well as the activity fee. Because of the size of the tour bus, enrollment must be limited to 54 people for this event. If you are interested in attending, complete the enrollment form below and send it with your fee to John & Jeanne McNair, 1091 Belleza Street, Camarillo, CA 93012. Please note that no refunds can be made after May 6, 2016. To reserve your room and receive the discounted rate, please call the Bay Landing Hotel at 866-783-9612 and identify yourself as a PCA member or reference “reservation #3413.” The hotel’s cutoff for the discounted rate is May 6, 2016. Further details on departure location and time will be provided to those who enroll. Please make checks payable to PCA/SBR and book this trip early!

Maintenance

W

hen most people think of maintenance, mechanical issues come to mind. Oil changes, tire rotations and tune-ups are a few of the myriad items that need our attention. Depending on the complexity of the task, many of us elect to take the bull by the horns, get greasy (if necessary) and do the work ourselves. As our machines continue to evolve into higher levels of electronic sophistication, specialized (read $$$) equipment is often required. When the dollar/pain/expertise threshold is met, trundling off to the maintenance provider of choice is the best, and sometimes only, option.

MIKE HODSON

Based on our experiences, both positive and negative, we entrust the diagnosis and repair to a known entity. Whether a dealer or an independent shop, both have trained technicians who most likely have seen our problem before. Further, they have invested considerable funds into their facility, equipment and training, way beyond what individuals could ever justify. Interestingly enough, during the same month, respected aviation and Porsche media sources emphasized the importance of a thorough maintenance program. Anything less is false economy.

Personal maintenance is most important, including the physical, mental and emotional. We lavish attention on our automobiles to get the most out of them; hopefully, the same or more effort goes into keeping ourselves healthy. Proactive decisions regarding lifestyle and fitness do wonders for our minds and bodies. Enjoying a high quality of life is the result. Relationships also require regular care. Thoughtfulness, attention to detail and honesty help to keep our friends and family close. More than once, I have been overly focused on a project to the extent of neglecting my spouse and/or other family members. A bit of “damage control normally gets life back on track; however, it was sad that my actions caused hurt feelings. Simple gestures are often the best. A bouquet of grocery store flowers once a week is much better than a diamond ring once a year -- well, maybe both would be a good idea. Sometimes keeping everything in our lives properly maintained feels like a juggling act. Time and money are not endlessly available; therefore, decisions are made based on priorities. When the water heater breaks, the decision is easy. Ideally, needs should come before wants. However, wants can easily morph into perceived needs, further complicating matters. For most of us, keeping our toys pristine is a large component of our enthusiasm. Striving to maintain everything in our lives to a high standard is a lofty goal. Choose wisely, and reap the rewards.

35 more horsepower compared to those of the previous Boxster and are also up to 14 percent more efficient than their predecessors according to the New European Driving Cycle. EPA fuel economy figures will be available at a later date.

The centerpiece of the latest model range is the newly developed, turbocharged flat-four-cylinder engine. The 718 Boxster generates 300 horsepower from two liters of displacement, while the 718 Boxster S uses a 2.5 liter engine developing 350 horsepower. The S-model also employs a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The new engines develop

The completely retuned suspension and uprated brakes lay the foundation for exceptional performance and driving pleasure. The design of the new model line was also comprehensively improved. Every body part except for the luggage compartment lids, the windshield and the convertible top has been changed. Inside, a newly designed dash panel frames the cockpit. Furthermore, the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a state-of-the-art touchscreen is included as standard. The navigation module is available as an option.

wenty years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche is introducing the latest generation of its mid-engine roadsters featuring more power, greater fuel efficiency, and further improved handling. The new models are named 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S, paying homage to the flat-four-cylinder engines that were used in the mid-engine Porsche 718 sports cars which won numerous races back in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Efficient and powerful flat-four-cylinder engines A completely new generation of turbocharged flat-four-cylinder engines takes performance and efficiency in the 718 Boxster to new heights. Turbocharging significantly boosts torque. The two-liter engine of the 718 Boxster puts out 280 lb.ft. of torque, which is available from 1,950 rpm to 4,500 rpm. To put this into perspective: the new engine makes 74 lb.-ft. or 36 percent more torque than the previous powertrain and does so over a much broader power band. The 2.5-liter engine of the 718 Boxster S develops 309 lb.-ft. from 1,900 rpm to 4,500 rpm – a 43 lb.-ft. gain over the outgoing Boxster S engine. This yields significant gains in acceleration. The 718 Boxster – when equipped with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package – sprints from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds (0.7 seconds faster than the

Turbocharging also helps the powertrains of the 718 Boxster and Boxster S to be up to 14 percent more efficient than the previous engines according to the New European Driving Cycle. EPA figures will be available at a later date. True to their pure, driver focused character, the 718 Boxster models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsget-

riebe (PDK), which now features fuel-saving virtual gears, is available as an option.

New design emphasizes sharpened profile The 718 Boxster and Boxster S are immediately recognizable. The front has been resculpted and has a wider, more muscular appearance. Significantly larger cooling air intakes serve as a distinct symbol of the new turbocharged engine generation. Redesigned Bi-Xenon™ headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights are another striking feature. Optionally, LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights are available – a first for the mid-engine roadster. From a side view, identifying features of the new model line include new, independently styled wings and side sills. Larger air inlet panels with two fins emphasize the car’s dynamic look. The doors are now

designed without door handle recess covers. New 19-inch wheels are standard on the 718 Boxster S. 20-inch wheels are optionally available. The redesigned rear fascia of the 718 Boxster models places a much greater emphasis on width – especially due to the strip with integrated Porsche badge located between the tail lights. The new taillights stand out thanks to three-dimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights.

Sportier suspension for greater agility The outstanding dynamic performance of its namesake served as inspiration to continue to improve upon the exceptional handling of the mid-engine roadster. The 718 Boxster’s completely retuned suspension enhances cornering performance. Continued on page 12

Sport Chrono Package: engaging driving experience Just like in the 911, the optional Sport Chrono Package now includes the Individual program in addition to the three settings Normal, Sport and Sport Plus. In models equipped with PDK, the Sport Response Button, which was inspired by motorsports, has been added. It sharpens the responsiveness of the engine and the transmission to promote best possible acceleration.

New PCM as standarD EQUIPMENT A familiar environment awaits the driver inside the new 718 Boxster, which has been upgraded with new elements such as the instrument panel. Another defining element of the new interior layout is the Porsche Communication Manage-

ment (PCM) with cell phone preparation, audio interfaces and the 110-watt Sound Package Plus. The PCM can be enhanced with a navigation module including voice control. Beyond that, the Connect Plus module is available as an extension of the navigation module, providing a wide array of online services. The 718 Boxster and Boxster S go on sale now and will reach U.S. dealers in late June 2016. The 718 Boxster has a starting MSRP of $56,000, and the 718 Boxster S from $68,400, excluding the $1,050 destination charge. =

California Road Trip Three SBR members’ week-long adventure in OUR FAVORITE State

W

hat could be better than a full week of driving your Porsche on roads less traveled throughout California with good buddies as your wingmen? Three friends, three Porsches and 2000 miles – what an adventure! Let me tell you about it. Dick Lange, Howard Rubenstein and I took to the road on October 22, 2015 and headed north. We had an idea of some stops to make, sites to see, places to visit, but we knew that our plans would be altered by unanticipated side trips and detours that would become welcome and memorable moments. Our original plan was simple. We plotted a course that would basically form a circle -- up the coast to Eureka, across the state along the Trinity River Valley (home of Bigfoot), then south on Hwy 89 to Lake Tahoe and home along the eastern Sierra. That plan stayed in place, but my-oh-my, the detours!

(L-R) Dick Lange, Howard Rubenstein, and Nicolas Liakas at Glacier Point, Yosemite

California Road Trip On day one, we lunched at the Ragged Point Lodge, an isolated but well-visited hotel and casual eatery. Soon thereafter, we encountered our first off-the-beaten-path detour as we drove our Porsches onto the property of a monastery located on a high hillside with gorgeous views of the Cabrillo Hwy below and, of course, the sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean. We observed the silence instructions as we walked on the grounds and into the chapel, and we appreciated the monastic life limitations the monks observe every hour of every day. We departed and continued northbound on Hwy 1, passing along the way places such as Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Beach, Nepenthe and the iconic bridges on Big Sur. We made it to Monterey for our overnight stay. The early morning departure left us with plenty of time to follow Hwy 1 to Half Moon Bay, a small but interesting little town which none of us had previously visited. The open highway then led us into the traffic-jammed city of San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge. At the north end of the AUSPUFF MARCH 2O16

bridge, we took the exit to the World War II fortifications that protected the city and its naval installations from enemy attacks. The numerous stops were historically important and interesting, but they were equally desired for the breathtaking views of the bridge in the foreground and the city’s skyline in the distance. Spectacular! Resuming our route, we traveled to Bodega Bay where we searched for the famous schoolhouse featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.” It was here that we made our first major detour, taking Hwy 12 through Sebastopol into Santa Rosa and then Hwy 101 north to Ukiah. The reason for the detour was misinformation given to us that events in Fort Bragg were choking the town and its hotels, so we sought a more accessible avenue. The bad news was that the information was wrong. But the good news was that in order to return to the coast, we took Hwy 20 west from Willits directly to Fort Bragg. This road was amazing. Freshly paved, tons of twists, many short straight-aways, lush vegetation and inviting meadows, tall trees all around – at the end, we were left speechless. What a drive. Continued on page 18

challenging itinerary and equally impressed with their perfect English!

Eureka Continued from page 17

California Road Trip We arrived in Eureka and explored the turn-of-the-century mansions erected by barons of industry. It was raining the next morning, but that did not stop us. We continued north on the 101 to the Redwoods National and State Parks at the northwest corner of California. The hoped-for hikes did not materialize due to the rain, but still the sites were awesome. Furthermore, we made several stops along the way where we met and conversed with visitors from Europe -- each riding a bicycle on journeys that started in Seattle or Portland and would conclude in San Diego. We were impressed with their AUSPUFF MARCH 2O16

18

We did not mount a search for Bigfoot as we headed east on Hwy 299 along the Trinity River Valley. Lunch in Weaverville was a treat, and seeing locals stop and park their cars so they could closely examine our Porsches added to the sense of the community‘s isolation. This highway was another treat as it hugged the river all the way to Redding. There were spots where the river’s flow was so weak that locals were walking across without regard for rushing water hazards. There were none! We continued heading east past Redding, and now we made another detour. Staying on the eastbound 299, we reached the incredible McArthur-Burney Falls, a place Theodore Roosevelt labeled as the “ninth wonder of the world.” Fed by underground springs, the falls were in their full majesty despite the drought. The site blows you away. Billions of gallons of water cascade down several hundred feet of stone walls and stretch across hundreds of yards. The sites and sounds will last in our memories forever. The

next destination, Lassen Volcanic National Park, would be just as jaw-dropping for the magnificent sunset views, the steaming puddles and stunning geothermal features. Next we headed for Lake Tahoe where we were dismayed by its low water level. The town was empty due to the time of year, so we left the next morning. This is when we experienced yet another unbelievable drive. Hwy 89 South eventually connects with Hwy 395, but getting to that junction was a daring driving experience. The road climbs and then descends many times, with too many twists and turns to count. By the time we reached the junction, we had to stop to allow blood to return to our white knuckles. It was exciting, challenging, barren, and lonely -- exactly what we wanted! Our final destination was the Tioga Pass and then the Yosemite Valley. Great photo opportunities, rare bear encounters, fog and light rain provided a different feel of the national park, especially the cloud-covered views from Glacier Point. The Yosemite Lodge was our sleep headquarters. We made it back home on Oct. 29, with plenty of memories and experiences to last the rest of our lifetimes.

The Tech Report

Porsche’s New Flat-Four Engine Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

A

s mentioned elsewhere in this issue, Porsche will soon return to its roots by offering a flat-four-powered sports car. The redesigned Boxster and Cayman will be known as the 718 in homage to Porsche’s eponymous sports racer of the late 1950s and early 1960s. In fact, the 718 will be the first four-cylinder Porsche of any type since the demise of the 968 in 1995 (unless one counts the VW-powered 4-cylinder Macan that is made for the Chinese market only). As outlined in the November 2015 Tech Report, the continual downsizing and turbocharging of modern engines have been motivated by government fuel economy and emissions regulations. The engine output figures have already been high-

lighted earlier in this issue, but they deserve another mention. The base 718 engine will produce 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, while the 718 S engine output is a full 350 horsepower and 309 lb-ft. The most impressive statistic is the full 74 ft-lb gain of the base 718 over its predecessor’s naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine! Both engines will be massively flexible and responsive, with peak torque occurring from 1900-4500 RPM. Fuel economy for both is also up over 14% according to the European Union driving cycle; US EPA figures are yet to be released. The base 718 is powered by a 2.0-liter flat-four, while the S models receive a 2.5-liter version of the same engine. While its internal designation is not yet known, the 718 engine will share as many parts as possible with the MA2-series

turbocharged flat-six power plants from the soon-to-be-released 2017 991.2. This means that the 718 will get a robust engine block with iron-coated cylinder liners to withstand the rigors of forced induction. Exact bore and stroke dimensions have not yet been announced, but it is probable that the 718 engines will follow the lead of Porsche’s current V6 and V8 engine family and share the same bore size, with the S version utilizing a longer-throw crankshaft to add displacement. As mentioned in the August 2014 issue, a pair of smaller turbochargers with lowerinertia turbine wheels reduces turbo lag, and their combined airflow often equals or exceeds that of a large, single turbo. However, hanging a turbocharger and a catalytic converter from each exhaust manifold requires space, which is not abundantly present in the tight confines Continued on pagge 24

Porsche managed to find numerous weight savings in the new MA2 engine, which surely will be duplicated in the case of the 718.

Porsche’s New Flat-Four Engine Continued from page 23 of the 981/718 mid-engine chassis. It is also a challenge for Porsche engineers to provide enough cold airflow to the engine air filter housing, let alone to a pair of intercoolers. Therefore, either 718 engine will employ but a single turbocharger, which marks the first time a Porsche sports car has been thus equipped since the 1994 911 Turbo 3.6. (The VW-derived Cayenne Diesel V6 also has a single turbo.) Luckily, the 718 engine shares the MA2’s new higherpressure direct fuel injection (DFI—see the April 2014 issue for more info) system with twin injection pumps and repositioned fuel injectors, which will improve offboost throttle response. The 2.5-liter 718 S engine also adds variable turbine geometry (VTG) to its turbocharger, with variableangle blades surrounding the turbine wheel to further enhance turbo spool-up. The 2.0-liter base 718 makes do with a conventional turbo, but its presumed shorter-stroke crankshaft should enable it to rev quickly enough to partially overcome this deficiency. Interestingly, the 991.2 was denied VTG technology (which has been present on the flagship 911 Turbo since the 997 genAUSPUFF MARCH 2O16

DE R

24

eration), with the 718 S’s bigger brother instead relying on VarioCam adjustment of the exhaust camshaft and software trickery to keep its twin turbos spooled during off-throttle situations. The pictured cutaway of the 718 engine clearly shows the new VarioCam exhaust camshaft solenoids. So in addition to improving engine efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions, your correspondent presumes that the same software strategy will be used to fight turbo lag in the 718. The four-cylinder engine assembly should be somewhat lighter than the outgoing flat-six, but the turbocharger and its ancillaries will certainly add some mass.

As for the transmissions attached to this new engine, they should be similar to those of the outgoing 981. A six-speed manual is “standard” equipment, but it will likely be somewhat difficult to find on dealership lots. The optional 7-speed PDK should be the volume seller, and the 718 version adds the “virtual gears” feature of the latest 991s, which allows clutch slippage during low engine RPM/light-load cruising situations to improve fuel economy. Of course, the engine’s exhaust note is of great importance to Porschephiles. It is quite possible that the 718 flat-four will not quite stir the soul as a 9A1 flatsix would. However, the flat-four engine is enshrined in Porsche’s DNA, and its designers will make it sound as sweet as possible. Porsche’s website features sound bites of the 718’s aural signature (and some neat animations of its engine internals). And while it does approximate a smoother Subaru engine note to these ears, it does reveal a nice, aggressive edge. An optional Sports exhaust should add to the 718’s bark. =
