THE GIMMICK RALLY saturday, APRIL 30, 2016 Our starting point willl be the Pacific View Mall in Ventura at 8:45 a.m. sharp. Enter on S. Mills and park in front of Staples. Departure time is 9:30 a.m. The drive will take us on some roads just made for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of fun driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here. Only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winner’s circle. The top three teams, as determined by the highest number of correct answers, will be winners and receive prizes. You will need a driver in a Porsche, and a copilot with a clipboard and a writing utensil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen may come in handy, too. The rally will end at Dos Vientos Center in Newbury Park. There, we’ll be treated to a great barbecue lunch from Q-Time BBQ. Your 4th-time rally hosts will be Jerry & Pam Lasnik. If you’ve gone with them before, you know how much fun it is. Be sure to invite your friends to join in. This is always a popular event, so don’t be left out. The total cost is $30 per person, including lunch, drinks and SBR activity fee. Please R.S.V.P. by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check payable to PCA/SBR. Memorial Day By The Bay
SBR Goes To San Francisco May 27-30, 2016
Come join us for SBR’s annual Memorial Day weekend getaway when we travel north to the beautiful and exciting San Francisco Bay area. This weekend trip will start with a scenic drive up Highway 101 to our base at the Bay Landing Hotel located in Burlingame, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The hotel, which is situated right on the bay, has scenic views, and provides a complimentary breakfast. We’ve obtained discounted room rates of $159/night and parking is free. Friday evening, we will leave our Porsches parked and walk to the nearby El Torito restaurant for a relaxing dinner reception. On Saturday, we will travel as a group to the lovely estate, Filoli, which is nestled amongst stunning gardens in the verdant town of Woodside on the San Francisco peninsula. The house and grounds are part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, one of only two such designated properties in California. Built by the owner of the Empire Gold Mine, Filoli is recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. We will have a docent-led tour followed by a catered lunch on the grounds. After our meal, we will depart for a spirited and very scenic drive through stands of redwoods over the San Andreas mountains to the rugged beauty of the coast and through picturesque towns such as Pescadoro and Half Moon Bay. Saturday dinner will be on your own to travel into San Francisco or to explore the upscale shopping and dining in downtown Burlingame or other peninsula towns such as Palo Alto.
On Sunday morning, a chartered bus will pick us up at our hotel for a guided tour of San Francisco, including a crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County. Our itinerary has been planned by the very popular Blue Heron Tour company and will include a lunch break at Pier 39, where there are many dining options to choose from. Later on Sunday, we will meet at Il Fornaio restaurant in Burlingame for a farewell dinner. The cost for the weekend is $215 per person, which includes two dinners, one lunch, admission fee and guide at Filoli, chartered bus and tour guide fees as well as the activity fee. Because of the size of the tour bus, enrollment must be limited to 54 people for this event. If you are interested in attending, complete the enrollment form below and send it with your fee to John & Jeanne McNair, 1091 Belleza Street, Camarillo, CA 93012. Please note that no refunds can be made after May 6, 2016. To reserve your room and receive the discounted rate, please call the Bay Landing Hotel at 866-783-9612 and identify yourself as a PCA member or reference “reservation #3413.” The hotel’s cutoff for the discounted rate is May 6, 2016. Further details on departure location and time will be provided to those who enroll. Please make checks payable to PCA/SBR and book this trip early!

Satisfaction
I
n their hit song, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (with grammatical apologies to every English teacher everywhere), the Rolling Stones expressed frustration with the inability to be content with material things and love. Who among us have shared similar feelings as we journey through our lives?
face. Other, newer and faster rides crossed my path, to no avail. Eventually a 911T Targa called my garage home, a relationship that lasted 23 years. Now the Turbo and I have been friends for 16 years, and after driving various newer models, the 930 still remains near and dear to me.
MIKE HODSON
Incentive has been a great motivator in my life. Ever since I can remember, automobiles fascinated and mesmerized me. Dinky toys were prized possessions where a trip to the toy store found me agonizing over which one to buy with my not-so-hard-earned money. Plastic model kits, both airplanes and cars, kept me busy during those long, brutal Southern California winters. Sadly, the kits never turned out as well as the artwork on the box; impatience was the enemy. Every fall meant a visit to the local Ford dealer for a VIP sneak preview of the latest models, courtesy of my dad’s loyalty to all things Ford. Saturdays, school vacations and summer vacations were spent working with one goal in mind. The money was socked away in anticipation of that magical day when, soon after turning 16, I was going to buy my own car. In a pattern that continues to this day, a 1968 Camaro called my name. Brash, bright and bold -- I loved, hated and cherished that car for many years. Most every time behind the wheel, you couldn’t wipe the smile from my
During the Targa years, a home purchase was the next logical step. After considerable soul searching, a perfect tract house filled my needs with a two-car garage and privacy. Ten years later, thanks to the luck of the real estate market, living in Camarillo became a possibility. Pamuela wouldn’t let me buy my dream house, and I wouldn’t let her buy her dream house. We bought what was affordable and made sense. And 28 years later, we are still here, living the dream. I am extraordinarily fortunate to be married to a woman who can be satisfied. Very patiently, she waited for her new kitchen after several bumps in the road, both literal and figurative. That project has been crossed off the list, and now it is time to enjoy the upgrade for many years. Neither of us lust after the latest and greatest anything, which was a huge factor in allowing me to retire several years ago. The relentless pursuit of materialism can never be successful. Pamuela and I love and accept each other as we are, with all our imperfections. My greatest satisfaction is being happy with my love and happy with my life. Living life feeling satisfied is wonderful as well as relaxing. I highly recommend it.

O
nce again, it’s Autocross time at the Camarillo Airport. On Saturday, April 23rd, the region will stage another Zone 8 Autocross competition.
If you’ve never done an autocross, why not come out and give it a try. There will be experienced drivers available to “coach” you through some practice laps, giving you tips on how to be smooth and efficient as you drive your car through the gauntlet of traffic cones. My point is: Newcomers are welcome, and almost everybody who tries it, loves it! Complete entry info is available in the flier printed on page 10 of this edition.

Maybe you’re just curious but aren’t ready to rough up your tires as a competitor. Fine - a driving event like the autocross needs volunteers, and Autocross Chair Steve Ferrari would welcome your assistance for a few hours or all day. Shoot him an email: SteveFerrari@outlook.com AUSPUFF APRIL 2O16

Another club event that’s become very popular the last few years is the Gimmick Rally, coming up this month on the 30th. Thanks largely to Jerry & Pam Lasnik, who devise the route and create the cryptic clues, the Gimmick Rally is a morning of fun and frustration followed by a good meal and some hearty laughs. The rally involves following a designated route while trying to identify the “landmarks” cryptically described in the directions. Like I said, fun and frustration, but mostly fun. Flier’s on page 15. The SBR activities calendar is full of events as volunteers work behind the scenes to make our club a great experience for all of us. If you’re a new member, sign up for something and come on out. If you’re a legacy member, seek out the new folks and make them feel welcome. “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people” is more than the PCA slogan - in the case of SBR, it’s how our club thrives.

R.U.F. Visits EMORY MOTORSPORTS T STORY BY JEANNE MCNAIR PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO
he Retired & Unemployed Folks (R.U.F.) outing on Thursday, February 18th, was a truly exceptional experience for all who were fortunate enough to attend. Rod Emory of Emory Motorsports graciously opened his unique auto shop to us and gave us a guided tour, spending over two hours with us. The simple version of the mission of Emory Motorsports is to restore, customize and enhance Porsche 356s and early 911s by combining the beauty of the original bodies with updated features to an owner’s taste and requirements. But as we learned, the execution of this mission is highly technical, complex and involves hours and hours of dedicated work. Rod Emory and his staff of skilled mechanics and craftsmen strip the cars down to bare metal (many of the 356s we saw were only the outer metal shells) and from there, a myriad of modifications are made to the bodies and, more importantly, to the engines to enhance performance. As Mr. Emory said, “Modify everything, but don’t let it show.” These restorations are not only beautiful to look at, but have become cars with greater rigidity, increased horsepower and improved suspension, making them faster and more functional. Rod displayed both a great passion for his work and a high degree of knowledge and expertise about both Porsche 356s and the engineering and design of cars in general. He told of coming from a family of “car people.” His grandfather owned Valley Customs Shop, and both his father and grandfather worked for the Porsche dealer in Newport Beach. Rod restored his first 356 at age 14, and to date has built 150 cars. He combined his interest in restora-

tion with a passion for racing, giving him a unique perspective of what is needed to improve handling and speed. His impeccable restorations are widely known and respected, having garnered the moniker of “356 Outlaws” with their own concours class at the Porsche Parade. We were all rapt when Rod unveiled an especially unique car under restoration, the 1951 356SL, which was the 1100cc class winner of the 1951 24 hours at Le Mans. As there had been previous modification to the body since it was built, it is now being restored to its original appearance. We also saw a 356C4S which was in the process of being modified to a 356 AWD for its sports enthusiast owner. At any given time, there are 8-10 cars under active restoration, and each involves about 1500 hours of metal work and takes a year or more to complete. A combination of very high-tech 3D modeling combined with the use of some very old tool and die machinery makes for an interesting amalgam in arriving at such sophisticated results. We all thanked Rod Emory for this very informative tour and presented him with an SBR grille badge as a token of our appreciation. =

THE MULLIN MUSEUM
N
inety-six members and guests driving 50 Porsches enjoyed a fast-paced drive over the Santa Monica Mountains via Kanan Road and through the sweeping curves of Encinal Canyon Road to the Pacific Coast Hwy. The scenic ocean views were gorgeous as we traveled almost 20 miles along PCH to Pleasant Valley Road and then just about two more miles to the Mullin Automotive Museum. This privately owned automobile museum was established in 2010 and displays the personal car collection of businessman and philanthropist Peter M. Mullin. The museum is housed in the building formerly occupied by the Chandler Vintage Museum of Transportation and Wildlife. It was remodeled to be more energy efficient by making use of solar panels and reflective roofing to reduce heat, yet incorporating elements that retain the Art Deco style and motifs in order to match the era of the cars, many of which were made in the 1920s and ‘30s.

We were divided into three smaller groups for docentled tours of the beautiful automobiles, furniture and art pieces on display. The museum design incorporates the elegance and precision that is the hallmark of the influential art deco design style, which first appeared in France after World War I. As explained by our museum docents, art deco design is a marriage of fine art and industrial art, which yields sleek, functional shapes and visually alluring beauty. The automobile collection is spread out on two floors with the premier cars primarily on the first floor. The Mullin collection, over 150 cars, includes some of the most beautifully styled and amazingly engineered French cars ever built. The ensemble covers several decades and includes Bugattis, Delahayes, Hispano Suizas, Peugots, Talbot-Lagos and Voisins. Although there are a few modern Bugattis, most of the cars in the collection are pre-WWII cars. Several were disassembled before the war and hid-

In addition, a number of cars have won historic races such as the Grand Prix de Pau and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
One of the unrestored cars on display, the “Lady of the Lake,” is a 1930 Bugatti which was confiscated by Swiss authorities from its owner (who had won it in a card game) for non-payment of taxes. It was to be destroyed, but instead was sunk into Lake Maggiore where it languished for 75 years. Miraculously, it was retrieved and eventually acquired by the museum owner, James Mullin. Despite its time underwater, it still contained oil and was in remarkable condition.
Also on display were art glass, including several Lalique pieces, and many fine examples of furniture and furnishings from that period. Upstairs there was a lovely, completely furnished salon and bar in art deco style. We were all very impressed by the museum structure, the extensive car collection and the extensive knowledge of all the docents.

Most of the cars viewed were impeccably restored and maintained, and the detail and design of them are breathtakingly beautiful. Many of these cars have won prestigious awards including Best of Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
After the tour, we drove to the Prime Steakhouse in Ventura for a private lunch as the manager opened their restaurant just for our group. Burgers, sandwiches, salads and vegetarian dishes were all delicious and, of course, the primary topic of conversation was about the exquisite car collection we’d just seen. =

The Tech Report ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS REVISITED
Porsche’s Energy Management ARTICLE BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
T
he March 2012 Tech Column discussed the intricacies of modern Porsche electrical systems and provided some tips and precautions for dealing with the battery and charging system. The current iteration of Porsche’s electrical system architecture was introduced in the 970 Panamera of the 2010 model year. The second-generation 92A Cayenne of 2011 as well as the 2012 and 2013 991 and 981 sports cars followed suit. As it is now 2016, the original batteries of some of these vehicles are beginning to expire, so a more in-depth look at current Porsche energy management systems is timely. The complexity of the modern Porsche electrical system stems from both consumer demand for creature comforts and government regulations that have dictated an ever-increasing arsenal of automatic safety features. Furthermore, stringent fuel economy standards have forced engineers to devise numerous methods for eking out the maximum motive force from each drop of fuel. One approach is a revamping of the vehicle’s battery charging and energy management strategy.
So, 12 volts it is. However, battery technology has evolved to allow the current 12V system to remain viable. At the heart of the modern Porsche electrical system is a special absorbed glass-mat (AGM) battery. This type of battery uses sponge-like micro-glass fiber mats that absorb the electrolyte and allow it to react very quickly with the positive and negative plate material, which means that the battery can repeatedly withstand deep discharging and recharging cycles when compared to a normal, “flooded” battery. This is especially important in vehicles that have the fuel-saving automatic engine stop/start feature. (See the June 2014 Tech Page for more info.)
Battery voltage, discharge rate (current draw) and temperature are monitored by a sensor that is integrated into the negative battery cable. This information is forwarded to the gateway control module, which acts as the central control/ switching center for the entire vehicular electrical system. As shown in the pictured Macan network topology map (below), all of the onboard electronic control modules are at least indirectly connected to the gateway control module via one of the various data bus networks. (In an effort to save the reader’s time, I counted 66 individual control modules!) Data transmission priority is given to the drivetrain Continued on page 24
PORSCHE MACAN ELECTRICAL NETWORK DIAGRAM
Despite the plethora of electronic control units and consumers onboard any modern vehicle, they are all still powered by a 12-volt electrical system. There have been some efforts by industry associations to adopt a 48V system, which would drastically reduce the size and weight of onboard wiring and control electronics. Alas, the prospect of actually adopting such a sweeping change is daunting to automakers, suppliers and service facilities alike, so the automotive industry continues to drag its collective feet about the issue. (engine/DME and transmission) control modules and safety systems like PSM (stability control) and airbag systems. Lowerpriority functions such as window motors and mirror adjustments are connected to a simpler, lower-speed data bus. The gateway control module is programmed with an array of control algorithms based on the vehicle’s electrical load, battery state of charge and driver input. As previously mentioned in these pages, all current Porsches use a fuel-saving, battery-charging strategy that only fully charges the battery during braking and deceleration. Because a fully-fielded alternator creates a drag on the engine via the belt drive, it is advantageous to use this counter-torque to help slow the vehicle, thereby using kinetic energy, that would otherwise be wasted as heat, to recharge the battery. While this alternatordrag effect is not nearly as effective as the drag created by the motors of hybrid and electric vehicles during deceleration, it can improve fuel economy by a few percent during city driving, which is significant. However, if the battery is severely discharged, charging can and will take place during cruising and acceleration until the battery state of charge is satisfactory. Newer Porsche alternators may produce 15-16 volts during certain situations, which would be considered over-charging in the case of older models. The AGM battery is sufficiently robust to withstand such voltage fluctuations without boiling over. Conversely, the voltage display in the instrument cluster will read as low as 12V during braking/energy recuperation, but this is normal, according to Porsche. If the actual system voltage is outside of specifications, a prominent battery/voltage warning message will be displayed. The Porsche energy management system is also working behind the scenes when the ignition is switched off. After all, one of the most important functions of the battery is ensuring that the engine will start, so its integrity is protected at all times. Because of the copious amount of electronics onboard the modern Porsche, leaving the ignition on while the engine is switched off for even a few minutes AUSPUFF APRIL 2O16

can rapidly discharge the battery. If battery voltage approaches a critical level, a warning message will be displayed in the instrument cluster, imploring the driver to either switch the ignition off completely or to start the engine. If the warning is not heeded, the gateway control module will switch off non-critical systems (such as comfort features) in stages, all in an effort to preserve the battery’s ability to start the engine. Despite the AGM battery’s penchant for severe discharging and recharging cycles, it will eventually wear out in the same manner as a conventional battery. In Porsches thus equipped, this will often be preceded by battery voltage warning messages and slow engine cranking while starting. If such symptoms occur in your Porsche, a trip to a Porsche repair specialist should be made post-haste. In the case of the Porsches mentioned in the first paragraph of this article, bat-
should never have the AGM battery replaced with a conventional lead-acid battery, as it is not up to the task of maintaining such a complex electrical system and could easily boil over. As a final precaution, it should be reiterated that under no circumstances should the negative lead of a battery charger or jumper cable be directly connected to the negative battery terminal of a battery sensor-equipped Porsche, as the built-in battery sensor will be irreparably damaged. Such a cable should only ever be connected to a designated chassis ground point as outlined in the owner’s manual. In any front-engined, four-door Porsche (Panamera, Cayenne and Macan), this would be under the hood in the engine compartment, along with a remote positive terminal. In the case of the mid- and rear-engined Porsche sports cars, this is also under the front hood, but there is a prominent ground point adjacent to the actual negative battery terminal. =
a Inside the frunk of a 2016 Carrera the main battery is beneath a removable panel at the base of the windshield. The “designated chassis ground point” is indicated by the red arrow at the right in the photo. When jumpstarting the car, the negative cable should be attached at this spot, NOT on the battery’s negative terminal. tery replacement is wholly outside of the realm of DIYers. The physical replacement of the battery is the same as before, but a factory level scan tool is also needed to “register” the battery replacement. This is no mere formality, as the programmed battery charging algorithm gradually changes as the battery ages. If the battery is replaced without electronic registration, it will not be charged correctly, and its life will be severely shortened. It also must be stated that the above Porsches

The Last Word
Ticket To Ride At February’s R.U.F. visit to Emory Motorsports in North Hollywood (page 12), we were all amazed at the collection of Porsche 356s in various stages of reincarnation. Our host, Rod Emory, was kind enough to share with us his personal 356 Outlaw (pictured above right), which was a crowd favorite, judging by the number of photos taken. In the large picture above (from the camera of Chet Yabitsu), SBR President Mike Hodson was the first to hop behind the wheel when Rod asked if anyone would like to try it out. Sadly, but understandably considering the sky-high value of the car, a test drive was NOT offered. Still, pretty cool, though. Check out the bud vase on the dash, put there for Rod’s wife. Fresh flowers apparently make road trips nicer. Who knew?
