Memorial Day By The Bay

SBR Goes To San Francisco May 27-30, 2016

Come join us for SBR’s annual Memorial Day weekend getaway when we travel north to the beautiful and exciting San Francisco Bay area. This weekend trip will start with a scenic drive up Highway 101 to our base at the Bay Landing Hotel located in Burlingame, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The hotel, which is situated right on the bay, has scenic views, and provides a complimentary breakfast. We’ve obtained discounted room rates of $159/night and parking is free. Friday evening, we will leave our Porsches parked and walk to the nearby El Torito restaurant for a relaxing dinner reception. On Saturday, we will travel as a group to the lovely estate, Filoli, which is nestled amongst stunning gardens in the verdant town of Woodside on the San Francisco peninsula. The house and grounds are part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, one of only two such designated properties in California. Built by the owner of the Empire Gold Mine, Filoli is recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. We will have a docent-led tour followed by a catered lunch on the grounds. After our meal, we will depart for a spirited and very scenic drive through stands of redwoods over the San Andreas mountains to the rugged beauty of the coast and through picturesque towns such as Pescadoro and Half Moon Bay. Saturday dinner will be on your own to travel into San Francisco or to explore the upscale shopping and dining in downtown Burlingame or other peninsula towns such as Palo Alto.

On Sunday morning, a chartered bus will pick us up at our hotel for a guided tour of San Francisco, including a crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County. Our itinerary has been planned by the very popular Blue Heron Tour company and will include a lunch break at Pier 39, where there are many dining options to choose from. Later on Sunday, we will meet at Il Fornaio restaurant in Burlingame for a farewell dinner. The cost for the weekend is $215 per person, which includes two dinners, one lunch, admission fee and guide at Filoli, chartered bus and tour guide fees as well as the activity fee. Because of the size of the tour bus, enrollment must be limited to 54 people for this event. If you are interested in attending, complete the enrollment form below and send it with your fee to John & Jeanne McNair, 1091 Belleza Street, Camarillo, CA 93012. Please note that no refunds can be made after May 6, 2016. To reserve your room and receive the discounted rate, please call the Bay Landing Hotel at 866-783-9612 and identify yourself as a PCA member or reference “reservation #3413.” The hotel’s cutoff for the discounted rate is May 6, 2016. Further details on departure location and time will be provided to those who enroll. Please make checks payable to PCA/SBR and book this trip early!

Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way

…not by simply watching it from the sidelines but by being a part of it! Our club will slowly cruise down Santa Barbara’s State Street past the large crowd lining the boulevard with our Porsches decorated in 4th of July red, white, and blue finery. (A large part of the fun and camaraderie of this day is actually decorating our cars at the staging area alongside our fellow PCA/SBR members.) Four years ago, the Porsche Club was invited to take part in Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade. We had such a good time that we’ve made it an annual event. The Porsches are so popular that parade officials have moved our Porsches to the front of the parade!

Porsche Club members who have participated agree that they had the time of their lives. Cost for this day of fun is practically free – only a $5.00 per person activity fee. Please send your checks, made out to PCA/ SBR, to our parade coordinator, Nadine Tracy, at the address below.

As the parade officials do not decide staging locations until we get closer to the 4th of July, all of you who sign up will receive additional information as soon as it’s transmitted to Nadine. You can plan on meeting mid-morning to line up alongside the parade route. Details of other Santa Barbara 4th of July celebratory events and activities following the parade will be given to you by Nadine as soon as they are made public. Mark your calendars and remember the date – MONDAY, JULY 4, 2016! Be certain to contact Nadine and sign up early to reserve your spot in the parade. Fill out the form below and mail it with your check today.

Reserve your spot in the Parade by filling out this form and mailing, emailing, or calling: Nadine Tracy, 3708 Greggory Way, #5, Santa Barbara, CA 93105, Email: nadine356@gmail.com Phone: 805-448-7929

Rancho Guadalupe Dunes & Oso Flaco Lake Saturday, July 16, 2016

Just south of Guadalupe, California, lies an extraordinary and unique nature preserve featuring both the tallest dunes on the west coast (550 feet!) and the Santa Maria River Estuary. It is the largest remaining dune system south of San Francisco. We’ll stop here to enjoy both the ocean views and the impressive dunes.

Just north of Guadalupe is one of the most scenic natural areas along California’s coast, Oso Flaco Lake. A docent will give us some history of the dunes and the lake, including the story behind the filming of “The Ten Commandments” in the dunes area. We’ll walk out over the lake on a mile-long boardwalk to see incredible views of the dunes and the surrounding landscape. At the end of the boardwalk, a viewing platform affords panoramic vistas of the entire San Luis Bay, from Point San Luis in the north to Mussel Rock in the south.

After returning to our cars, we’ll drive a short distance to the Trilogy Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo for lunch. One of our SBR members has invited us here to enjoy the beautiful grounds and to meet other Porsche-owning guests who live in the area. So come out to enjoy a great drive to see some new sites and have a fun day with your Porsche buddies. The cost is only $40 per person, which includes the docent talk, lunch, parking fees and activity fee. If you have questions, contact Doreen Pankow at dpankow@sbcglobal.net No refunds will be made for cancellations after July 9, 2016.

Please make check payable to PCA/SBR ($40 per person) and mail to: Doreen Pankow, 2251 Brownstone Creek Ave, Simi Valley, CA 93063

hen I purchased my blue 930, it never occurred to me what I was really buying. Sure, the Turbo bug had bitten me very bad, and my expectations regarding performance were very high. Having read about the infamous turbo lag for years, initial drives were exploratory in nature. Rolling my new toy up into a ball simply wasn’t an option. Expanding the comfort zone was slow and deliberate, little steps resulting in big grins.

MIKE HODSON

The car was the focus; socializing with it never occurred to me. Having owned a 1969 Targa for the prior 23 years, limited contact with other Porsche owners did not encourage me to seek opportunities to mingle. Maybe the Porsche-and-porcupine joke was true! After a very few months of ownership, I happened onto the PCA/SBR Camarillo breakfast, held in those years at the airport’s Way-Point Café. To say I was pleasantly surprised by the very warm welcome we received would be quite an understatement. I joined on the spot, much to Pamuela’s chagrin. The last thing we needed was another male-centric hobby. But everything changed after our first event. Casual acquaintances developed into lifelong friends, with seemingly everyone pleased to have us in the club. Volunteering at activities meant meeting more people and, hence, feeling like participants, not just spectators. Enthusiasm is contagious, and in no time, son Chris and daughter Julie embraced the excitement. Events were quality

Exploring southern California and its myriad attractions became the norm, thanks to the hard- working folks who planned activities. My lovely wife had accurately described me as a “hermit,” but now we were going places and seeing things that never would have happened without PCA. The comfort zone was being stretched -- and it felt good, very good. Great driving roads, great destinations and great people made every event special. As a native Californian, it was embarrassing to admit to all the places I had never been. There are many ridiculously easy-toreach sights so close to home, and yet the initiative was never present. Hearst Castle, the Nethercutt Collection, Edwards Air Force Base and Yosemite are on the list, just to name a few. Out of all the events, all the trips and all the sights, three stand tall above the rest. First and foremost was the San Diego Parade in 2007, truly a family treasure for us. Just thinking about it puts a lump in my throat. Second was one week touring the Bavarian region of Germany, where three guys in a minivan visited auto museums and auto factories. Suddenly, free-style travel was my new favorite. Third was Rennsport Reunion V, a mind-numbing collection of racing Porsches. Sharing the time with PCA members multiplied the fun. Tons of wonderful memories plus terrific friends have all been made possible by that blue car. Thank you, PCA Santa Barbara Region and all of our members, for transforming my car into a magic carpet. It has taken us places I never thought we would go and many other places that I never knew existed. The wonderful journey keeps getting better. I encourage everyone to come along.

MICHAEL RUBIN CERTIFIED PORSCHE BRAND AMBASSADOR

As a young child growing up in Los Angeles, I was indoctrinated into the city’s fascination with beautiful sports cars. Like most kids my age, I dreamt of one day owning and driving a Porsche. When I was 12 years old I had cut out a page from a Porsche brochure I had innocently pilfered from the L.A. Auto Show and kept it taped to the back of my bedroom door. It was a Silver 911 Coupe speeding down a country road that I fantasized about one day owning. Well, I guess some dreams do come true and I now drive a 911 S Coupe, and it is just as amazing as I had imagined it would be! My passion for Porsche has lead me to become a Porsche Global Brand Ambassador and I’ve received the Porsche Sales Excellence award for top 100 sales worldwide. Let me help you fulfill your childhood dream of owning or leasing one of the most coveted cars ever made.

SBR’s Tom Gaither was a proud participant in the legendary Festival of Speed Turbo Timeline with his 1976 “JAMN 930.”

California Festival of Speed

STORY BY MIKE HODSON EVENT PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER & MIKE HODSON

E

very spring, the folks at PCA Zone 8 bust out all the stops to produce the largest Porsche event in the southwestern United States. Three days of Club Racing, time trials, swap meet, Porsche corral, Turbo timeline, vendors, food trucks and more! This year, however, Mother Nature showed everyone who is “The Boss.”

Not too surprisingly, your humble correspondent was keen to view the Turbo timeline. The goal was to get one representative Turbo model from each year to display. Due to the weather, the timeline was a bit fragmented, but it was still hugely enjoyable. PCA/SBR member Tom Gaither proudly displayed his gorgeous 1976 Turbo, looking clean enough to win a concours.

Mercifully, on Saturday the rain was very light, contrary to the weather speculators’ predictions. No worries. The racing went off without a hitch, true Porsche fans showed up in respectable numbers to view the action and hear the sounds only racecars can produce, and everyone had a grand time.

Spectator parking is cleverly organized by model, so those wishing to check out their favorite Porsche cars are rewarded with a bunch to study. Again, the turnout was a bit light due to weather forecasts, but all in all, the parking lot was interesting enough to satisfy the most jaded enthusiast.

Volunteers, the unsung heroes of any PCA gathering, donned their bright yellow shirts, most often seen this year stretched over several layers to fend off the rain and cold. Traffic control, grid marshalling, timing and scoring plus tech inspection are only a few of the myriad tasks that needed to be performed. Amazingly, the volunteer positions were filled on Saturday for the first time in recent memory! Santa Barbara Region members were both volunteering and attending on all three days.

Amazingly, every model, every year, every type remained intact throughout the weekend. Despite the expectations of many, no cars melted in the parking lot nor on the track due to the rain. Seems these wonderful machines we know and love are much more robust than we had ever imagined! =

BACK ROADS DRIVE TO BJ’S STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW EVENT PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER

O

ver 100 members and guests met in Moorpark, and we were delighted to have such a beautiful, sunny day for our drive. Ted Lighthizer took a group photo shot and held a drivers meeting prior to the start of the drive. With so many cars and participants, we split into two driving groups, with Jeff Parker and Becky Lundberg leading the second group. Our 58 Porsches made an awesome sight as we left the parking lot and headed out on Spring Road towards Grimes Canyon. After coming down the tight curves through Grimes Canyon, we reached Fillmore and headed east on CA-126. We then continued southeast on Newhall Ranch Road to Copper Hill Drive. The fun began when we headed north on San Francisquito Canyon Road and drove at a brisk pace through this interesting canyon. We passed the distant site of the former St. Francis Dam built from 1924 to 1926. In 1928, the dam catastrophically failed, and the resulting flood took the lives of as many as 431 people. The collapse of the St.

BREWHOUSE & RESTAURANT Francis Dam is considered to be one of the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century. We also passed the rebuilt Power House, which is still in operation, and we saw all the large water pipelines climbing and crossing the canyon throughout the drive. As we neared the end of this road, we turned east to continue driving even tighter curves through Spunky Canyon and past the Bouquet Reservoir. Then we headed south back to civilization via Bouquet Canyon Road. After driving almost 80 miles, we ended up at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Valencia where we were presented a delicious assortment of deep-dish pizzas, salad and beverages. With so large a group, we overflowed the party room out onto the patio. By the level of noise in the room, it was obvious that everyone was enjoying each other’s company and taking the opportunity to get to know many of our newer members. We were all very pleased that we were able to experience this fun drive through the canyons without any rain. I’d like to thank all the attendees for your continued support and participation. Our events wouldn’t be any fun without you! =

Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way

NE

SBR With A Parade! VE W E NT

…not by simply watching it from the sidelines but by being a part of it! Our club will slowly cruise down Santa Barbara’s State Street past the large crowd lining the boulevard with our Porsches decorated in 4th of July red, white, and blue finery. (A large part of the fun and camaraderie of this day is actually decorating our cars at the staging area alongside our fellow PCA/SBR members.)

Four years ago, the Porsche Club was invited to take part in Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade.

RUSNAK SERVICE CLINIC Saturday, March 19, 2016

On Saturday, March 19, our friends at Rusnak/Westlake Porsche hosted another in their very popular series of complimentary service clinics. Scores of SBR members took advantage of the opportunity to have their Porsches examined by Rusnak’s certified techinal staff. As members and mechanics teamed up, the Rusnak crew pointed out any potential problem areas and recommended remedies for each car. Free coffee and breakfast snacks were also part of the day. Our thanks go out to Keith Goldberg, Adam Chirchick, Sam Abergel and the entire Rusnak service crew for sponsoring this valuable event. =

The Tech Report

Porsche 911R ARTICLE BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

In 2004, Porsche finally acquiesced and brought the 996 GT3 Stateside. While this slaked the thirst of those looking for a racetrack-ready iteration of the 911, it was a bit too hardcore for some and often had trouble traversing the dips and driveways of the real world. Porsche has since offered an ever-increasing array of 911 models, with the sporting GTS version helping to plug the gap between the uprated “S” model and the track-focused and be-winged GT3 and GT3RS. The “save the manuals” crowd was also miffed to learn that the 991 version of the GT3 was a PDK-only proposition, though it must be said that as a whole, Porsche buyers have voted with their feet by ticking the PDK box over 90% of the time when ordering a 991 or 981. Porsche has vehemently defended the notion of the GT3 being a track weapon first, with the PDK allowing faster lap times and more of the driver’s attention

to be focused on driving the track. Nonetheless, the company seemed genuinely taken aback by the loud calls of purist customers yearning for a simplified, manual transmission-only sports car. Thus, the current Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder are only available in the shift-it-yourself variety. And now, Porsche has finally heeded the call of those looking for a 911 with a Goldilocks-like combination of the sonorous, high-revving GT3 flat-six engine with a manual gearbox, lightweight construction, and more of a fun street car approach versus the GT3’s primary mission as a track-carving instrument. Unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show in March, the 911R is actually based on the outgoing 991.1 chassis and lacks the 991.2’s updated headlights and taillights. Only 991 examples will be produced, and each will be powered by the glorious, 500-hp, 8800 RPM-redlined, naturally-aspirated flat-six of the GT3RS, mated to a six-speed manual transaxle. This transmission is based on the same PDK architecture as the sevenspeed manual of lesser 991s, but the tall overdrive seventh gear is omitted, and the six remaining gear ratios are spaced closer together to optimize acceleration. An optional, lightweight single-mass flywheel further enhances engine response, albeit at the expense of some gear chatter at idle. A proper, mechanical limited-slip differential ensures surefooted traction during hard braking and corner exit.

The 911R chassis is closely based on that of the GT3, with height-adjustable coil spring perches, split lower control arms and adjustable anti-roll bars. Electronically adjustable PASM dampers are also standard, with their calibration revised to be more street-friendly than the track-focused GT3. The GT3’s front axle lift system is also available to conquer the aforementioned dips and bumps. Unlike the GT3 or GT3RS, lightweight PCCB ceramic brakes are standard equipment, with wheel and tire sizes aping those of the standard GT3. The bugaboo of steering feel through the electric power steering rack (see the January 2014 Tech Page and my expanded article on steering in the 2015 issue of Panorama for further info) is addressed by altering the control software of the EPS control unit and allowing more feedback to reach the driver’s hands. The 911R’s lack of overt aerodynamic devices speaks volumes about its purity of intent. However, aerodynamic stability is imperative in a rear-engined sports car with 500 hp and a 200 mph top speed. To this end, a special underbody rear diffuser is employed to reduce lift, which is balanced out by a smaller front lip spoiler than that of the be-winged GT3. The 991 Cabriolet lends its retractable rear spoiler with a greater angle of attack than that of Continued on page 24

or some time, it has been almost a sport among Porschephiles to ruminate about which features and attributes constitute a “proper” Porsche sports car. Those towards the hardcore end of the spectrum have often carped about each successive generation of 911 getting too heavy and luxurious and too easy to drive, along with the American enthusiasts’ additional frustration at being denied lightweight RS and Club Sport versions for many years.

the standard coupe. While the 911R lacks the race car-like aerodynamic downforce of the GT3 and RS, it has far less aerodynamic drag at higher speeds, so top-end acceleration should be impressive.

stability at higher speeds. This is especially important given the potent 911R’s lack of aero aids. In fact, Andreas Prueninger, who oversaw development of the 911R as the head of Porsche’s GT division, insists that a prototype 911R “felt like a truck” sans RAS. The maximum rear wheel steering angle of the 911R is the same 1.5 degrees of the GT3, but the software con-

Of course, a hallmark feature of any Porsche “R” or “RS” car is not what is present, but rather what is missing. The new 911R eschews air conditioning, a radio (though both can be specified as no-cost options), some sound deadening, rear seats, and much of the leather and Alcantara trim that is commonly found in standard and GT-series 991s.

As with the GT3RS, the front fenders (sans RS-style vents) and trunk lid are rendered in carbon fiber, and the roof skin is a thin, lightweight magnesium panel. The rear window and quarter windows are made of polycarbonate (plastic) instead of glass to further cut mass. Exhaust gases make their final exit from the 4.0-liter flat-six via a titanium central muffler. Porsche’s official curb weight figure (with fluids and a full tank of gas) for the 911R is a svelte 3,021 lbs. This is even lighter than the GT3RS due to the manual gearbox and narrower body and wheels. One item that was not omitted from the 911R was the GT3’s rear-axle steering system (RAS, see the January 2015 Tech Page for more info), which has caused some consternation among the “purist” faction of internet Porsche commentators. Such an obvious electronic driving aid does seem out of place in such a car. But Porsche has mitigated such concerns by making the RAS system virtually transparent in operation, and it greatly enhances the agility of the long-wheelbase 991 chassis at lower speeds and also helps AUSPUFF MAY 2O16

tional Porsche-nerd bonus points to those who also noticed that the lightweight fabric pull loop for the interior door latch release is anchored at both ends, a la early 911R. Alas, only 991 examples of the 911R will be produced, at a heady $184,900 base price; all are already spoken for and likely at marked-up prices. However, the fact that such a Porsche even exists should be celebrated by fans of the marque, especially in the face of modern emissions and safety standards and Porsche’s current position as a cog in the machine of the behemoth Volkswagen corporation. Calls for a less expensive, more “pedestrian” lightweight 991 or 981 model powered by a series-production engine (think

964 RS America) will likely go unheeded, as Porsche has repeatedly proven its capability of charging more for less, as it were. Nonetheless, Porsche fans of all stripes should enjoy the 911R’s existence as-is, because this is as pure as a modern Porsche will get! =

trol algorithm is altered to suit the 911R’s unique chassis setup. The “911R” moniker harks back to the first factory lightweight 911 of the same name from 1967; and predictably, the new iteration pays ample homage to the original. White and silver are the only standard exterior colors, and red or green racing stripes are available in deference to the BP-sponsored livery of the original. Inside, the simplified cabin features some key retro touches that are sure to activate the pleasure receptors of any vintage Porsche nut’s brain: houndstooth seat inserts for the lightweight sports buckets and greentinted numerals on the instruments. SBR

Saturday, July 16, 2016
