Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way

…not by simply watching it from the sidelines but by being a part of it! Our club will slowly cruise down Santa Barbara’s State Street past the large crowd lining the boulevard with our Porsches decorated in 4th of July red, white, and blue finery. (A large part of the fun and camaraderie of this day is actually decorating our cars at the staging area alongside our fellow PCA/SBR members.) Four years ago, the Porsche Club was invited to take part in Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade. We had such a good time that we’ve made it an annual event. The Porsches are so popular that parade officials have moved our Porsches to the front of the parade!

Porsche Club members who have participated agree that they had the time of their lives. Cost for this day of fun is practically free – only a $5.00 per person activity fee. Please send your checks, made out to PCA/ SBR, to our parade coordinator, Nadine Tracy, at the address below.

As the parade officials do not decide staging locations until we get closer to the 4th of July, all of you who sign up will receive additional information as soon as it’s transmitted to Nadine. You can plan on meeting mid-morning to line up alongside the parade route. Details of other Santa Barbara 4th of July celebratory events and activities following the parade will be given to you by Nadine as soon as they are made public. Mark your calendars and remember the date – MONDAY, JULY 4, 2016! Be certain to contact Nadine and sign up early to reserve your spot in the parade. Fill out the form below and mail it with your check today.

Reserve your spot in the Parade by filling out this form and mailing, emailing, or calling: Nadine Tracy, 3708 Greggory Way, #5, Santa Barbara, CA 93105, Email: nadine356@gmail.com Phone: 805-448-7929

Rancho Guadalupe Dunes & Oso Flaco Lake Saturday, July 16, 2016

Just south of Guadalupe, California, lies an extraordinary and unique nature preserve featuring both the tallest dunes on the west coast (550 feet!) and the Santa Maria River Estuary. It is the largest remaining dune system south of San Francisco. We’ll stop here to enjoy both the ocean views and the impressive dunes.

Just north of Guadalupe is one of the most scenic natural areas along California’s coast, Oso Flaco Lake. A docent will give us some history of the dunes and the lake, including the story behind the filming of “The Ten Commandments” in the dunes area. We’ll walk out over the lake on a mile-long boardwalk to see incredible views of the dunes and the surrounding landscape. At the end of the boardwalk, a viewing platform affords panoramic vistas of the entire San Luis Bay, from Point San Luis in the north to Mussel Rock in the south.

After returning to our cars, we’ll drive a short distance to the Trilogy Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo for lunch. One of our SBR members has invited us here to enjoy the beautiful grounds and to meet other Porsche-owning guests who live in the area. So come out to enjoy a great drive to see some new sites and have a fun day with your Porsche buddies. The cost is only $40 per person, which includes the docent talk, lunch, parking fees and activity fee. If you have questions, contact Doreen Pankow at dpankow@sbcglobal.net No refunds will be made for cancellations after July 9, 2016.

Please make check payable to PCA/SBR ($40 per person) and mail to: Doreen Pankow, 2251 Brownstone Creek Ave, Simi Valley, CA 93063

Therapy

E

veryone faces numerous challenges in their lives. Family and health issues can be life- long with no satisfactory short- or long-term solutions. Impossibly important decisions can degenerate into choosing the least evil of many evil options. Personal and professional relationships will test our mettle with changing dynamics constantly altering hopes, expectations and levels of satisfaction. Gray areas abound as we press onward. Friendships can become complicated very suddenly as life, careers and outside influences evolve, devolve and dissolve into agendas that never should exist. Money seems to bring out the worst in some people, potentially compromising integrity, honesty and morals. A big supply of money doesn’t necessarily mean things get better, and a small supply usually isn’t good either. Juggling needs and wants pits rationality against emotion, and the outcome is likely suboptimal.

MIKE HODSON

At the height (depth?) of my working years, the challenges were endless. As I used to tell everyone willing to listen, running a business would be easy if you could eliminate the employees, customers and suppliers. Oh, and let’s not forget the many and varied government agencies all trying to get their hands into the cookie jar, attempting to insure that any possible benefits were being properly redistributed to those perceived as more worthy. There was always a Gordian knot to be untied. Sometimes a magical solution would present itself and other times not, much to my consternation.

As the tsunami is breaking over one’s head, several courses of action can be taken. Following the fine lead of the ostrich, burying one’s head in the sand only serves to postpone the inevitable, likely worse tomorrow than today. Sadly, governments throughout the world have perfected the art of kicking the can down the road endlessly, with questionable short-term benefits. Attempting to overpower and defeat the tsunami is unrealistic, futile and foolish. Mother Nature will prevail, plain and simple. Running for cover may provide time to develop solutions; meanwhile, significant damage may be done. So what do we do? My suggestion is four-wheel therapy. Leave the adrenaline at home, forget the ego, and take a HUGE chill pill. Climb into your favorite conveyance, and relish in the pure pleasure of driving. Rediscover why you love sports cars and fully concentrate on driving not for speed, but for pleasure. Execute the perfect shift, carve a corner into perfect sections. Plant a big grin on your face when you realize that you don’t have to be scared to have fun. My friend Jeff and I used to practice Thursday Therapy every week. 45 minutes of Piper Cub airplane time brought us back to Planet Earth where no body, no thing and no problem could detract from our fun. Regardless of the week’s events, our perspective changed and brightened in short order. You may not be able to change the world, but changing the way you look at the world will make your life noticeably better. The road beckons, so get out there and enjoy it!

RUSNAK CLASSIC OF THE MONTH

Some would call it an icon, a work of art or a collector’s piece. This 1989 911 Speedster represents an opportunity to own a piece of Porsche history. The 911 Speedster, which was evocative of the Porsche 356 Speedster of the 1950s, was produced in limited numbers from January 1989 until July 1989 as both a narrow body car and a Turbo-look. The narrow body production total was only 171 cars. The 911 Speedster started as a design under Helmuth Bott in 1983 but was not manufactured until six years later. This example is finished in Grand Prix White over Cashmere/Black Leather with a Black top. With only 7k gentlydriven miles, this Speedster was originally purchased in New Mexico but came to Southern California a year later where it has been ever since. (Stock # P5495) Subject to availability.

Call or come in today! Ask for CARL BELL. Raised in Southern California, Carl Bell graduated from USC with a major in Journalism. Prior to joining Rusnak Porsche, Carl enjoyed a very successful carreer in broadcasting. He began as a page for NBC Studios, which eventually led to him becoming a Weathercaster for both KCAL9 and NBC4. Carl is very active in the community with philanthropic activities throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties. As a Porsche enthusiast, Carl is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the brand. Plus, as a member of the Santa Barbara Region, Carl always brings a Porsche (or two) of interest to the Camarillo Breakfest.

AUTOCROSS IN CAMARILLO STORY BY STEVE FERRARI EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

S

anta Barbara Region’s first autocross for 2016 was held Saturday, April 23, at the Camarillo Airport. With the weather in full cooperation, 43 registered drivers, including two participating in their first autocross, were ready to roll. I counted 38 different varieties of Porsches on hand along with a few non-P-cars as well. Drivers came from several regions within PCA’s Zone 8 as this was a sanctioned, for-points event. It was a fun, fast course. Many completed their runs in under a minute. We were able to finish three practice runs for each of the run groups before Aaron Johnson of Q-Time Barbecue served up a delicious and generous lunch during the noon break.

AUSPUFF JUNE 2O16

DE R

12

After lunch, one more practice run for everyone was followed by three timed runs. By 3:30 pm, we were tallying up the final times and picking up the cones, wrapping up another successful autocross event. Many club members volunteered their time, and without their help, an activity of this size could not be held. Big thank-yous go out to: Bob Bassett, Jim Brown, Kenny & Tara Brundrett, Glenn Crawford, Frank Donahue, Mike Furnish, Mike Hodson, Dan Long, Jeffrey Merrick, Doreen Pankow, Jeff Parker, Larry Stoops, Craig Webb, and Chet Yabitsu.

A special hat-tip is extended to off-site volunteer Audi Marshall. Audi, the wife of SBR’s Safety Chair, Tom Marshall, had agreed to fashion 13 replacement flags for our corner workers. How hard could it be? Some yellow cloth and some dowels? Apparently, it was a bit more work than Tom thought, but the new flags were perfect. Thanks, Audi, for your extra effort. It’s reassuring that the PCA allows Audis and Ferraris to be members, too. Another SBR autocross will run in the fall. As always, it will be open to all our members and guests. I hope you will consider volunteering or driving in the next event. Some SBR folks have volunteered just to see what autocross is all about and then wound up driving at the next scheduled run. Could this be you next time? =

The Gimmick Rally Saturday, April 30, 2016 STORY BY JERRY LASNIK • EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

W

aiting for people to show up for the beginning of the 2016 Gimmick Rally at the Pacific View Mall in Ventura, I wondered about the brainpower they’d bring with them. From Pam’s and my experience creating the routes and clues over the past three years, we were very aware that this crowd would almost certainly be another tough one; and so it was that we made this rally a bit more challenging.

But we definitely had to ramp it up this time because in previous years, the scores were obnoxiously high. We figured that if it’s too easy, where’s the sense of accomplishment? The route had something to offer for everyone. There were funny clues along some very scenic territory. Participants were treated to Decker Canyon, a perfect Porscheesque, winding mountain road, followed by a pretty drive along the shore of Lake Sherwood.

So after arriving at Dos Vientos Park, the glares on some rallyists’ faces took us aback somewhat. We heard things such as “We hate you!” “That was impossible!” “It was too hard!” “We’re quitting and joining the Corvette Club!” (Okay, I made up that last one.) But there were plenty of appreciative comments too. (Even if a few of those were also made up, we’ll take ‘em.) Before going over the answers and adding up the scores, it was time for lunch. The wonderful meal was enjoyed by all, catered again this year by QTime BBQ. It was then the time of reckoning. The clues had been wide ranging: Continued on page 18

Greg & Lindsay Lippert took the top prize for the most correct answers in one of the toughest Gimmick Rally Quizes ever!

There were a few revelations by participants who suggested different possible answers. We had to accept some of them, things we had not noticed on the route. We even had a “Wait a minute!” from someone in the crowd. Of course, it was a Nick Liakas wannabe. The top three high scorers’ race came down to a double tie breaker using Porsche trivia questions for the final determination. When the dust finally settled, the winners of the 2016 Gimmick Rally were as follows: First Place: Greg & Lindsay Lippert ($40 Amazon gift card)

Mike & Laura Whittington kept their impressive Gimmick Rally winning streak going with a second place finish this year.

Second Place: Mike & Laura Whittington ($30 gift card)
Third Place: Jeffry Waxman and Anita Banke ($20 gift card) Congratulations to all! So ended another Porsche event with fun, laughs, fine eats and a cool ride in the best autos on Earth. =

Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way

With A Parade!

The Tech Report

Rev-Matching/Heel-Toe ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

F

or this month’s tech column, we are literally switching gears from mundane technical details about Porsches to a practical lesson about a driving skill that can be applied every time that you drive your Porsche; that is, as long as your Porsche (or any other car) has a manually shifted transmission and a clutch pedal.

The term “heel-toe downshifting” is often bandied about in enthusiast-oriented automotive publications without much explanation of why it is necessary or how to execute such a downshift. Even those not wellversed in this art have likely seen and heard race car drivers “blipping” the throttle and dancing on the pedals while downshifting. To ensure smooth downshifts, automated transmissions like Porsche’s PDK automatically match engine revs while downshifting. Porsche’s latest manual transmission cars even feature a mode that automatically matches engine revs when the shift lever is moved to a lower gear. While the heel-toe downshift is not 100% necessary during street driving, it does help the driver to maintain control during aggressive driving, and it is also quite fun and rewarding to do once it is mastered. To fully understand the concept, a quick recap of manual transmission drivetrain function and the engine/wheel speed relationship is instructive. In any manual AUSPUFF JUNE 2O16

DE R

22

transmission-equipped vehicle, a clutch plate is used to couple the engine to the transmission, which is in turn connected to the driven wheels. The clutch pedal is used to de-couple the engine from the transmission while shifting gears, which prevents severe wear of the transmission parts and drivetrain. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the clutch is disengaged. When the clutch pedal is released, the clutch is engaged, and the engine and transmission are again connected.

The lower-numbered gears of the transmission are used to multiply the engine’s torque output by using a smaller gear with fewer teeth to drive a larger gear with more teeth, which aids acceleration. The maximum road speed possible in each gear is limited by the maximum engine RPM or “redline.” Each successively higher gear has less torque multiplication but allows a greater possible wheel speed. The upper ratio(s) are often overdrive gears, in which a larger gear drives a smaller gear to keep the engine RPM down for fuel economy purposes while driving at freeway speeds.

For an example, let’s imagine that the (utterly sophisticated) driver of a Porsche 944 Turbo is cruising at a steady 60 MPH in 4th gear. The 944 Turbo (or 951) uses a 4th gear that is nearly a direct 1:1 ratio, so with a 3.375 to 1 ratio for the final drive gears in the differential (which further multiplies engine torque) and the stock rear tire diameter of about 25”, this results in an engine speed of about 2800 RPM. Our intrepid driver wants to shift down a gear to increase the engine torque output and enable a pass of a slower vehicle. If he were to shift down to 3rd gear by merely depressing the clutch pedal, moving the gear lever to 3rd and then releasing the clutch pedal without altering engine RPM (while maintaining 60 MPH), the re-coupling of the engine to the driven wheels would force the engine speed to jump to 3800 RPM. This does not seem very dramatic, but an abrupt release of the clutch pedal would result in a jolt through the drivetrain because the engine is being forced to “catch up” with the speed of the wheels as determined by the transmission and differential gear ratios. An automatic transmission-equipped vehicle with a torque converter has a fluid coupling to cushion sudden load changes, but a manual transmission drivetrain has nothing beyond dampening springs in the clutch disc hub and/or dual-mass flywheel to absorb such a load.

gas pedal while the clutch is disengaged may cause the engine to zing to its redline quite easily! So, much practice and trial-and-error are necessary to become proficient at matching revs and smoothly downshifting in any given car. So, what to do when one needs to brake and downshift at the same time? That is where the exalted heel-toe action comes in. Actually, in many cases the required right foot action is more of a “ball of the foot-side of the foot” maneuver as shown in the accompanying pictures, but the heel-toe name has stuck.

This is the braking phase, using the ball of the right foot to depress the brake pedal. Notice that the outside of the right foot is already pre-positioned to actuate the throttle pedal. Let’s say the driver is slowing down from 60 to 40 MPH and downshifts to 2nd gear. If the clutch pedal were abruptly released after downshifting and without prematching the engine RPM to the wheel speed, a large jolt of the drivetrain would occur as the engine is suddenly raced to over 4000 RPM as it is forced to match the speed of the driven wheels. Besides being hard on the drivetrain, the shock through the drivetrain can unsettle the chassis and result in loss of control in an extreme case. One way to lessen the shock to the drivetrain is to slowly release the clutch pedal, thus using the clutch friction disc as a sort of brake to allow the engine to gradually match the speed of the driven wheels. This is a big no-no, as it greatly increases the rate of clutch component wear.

blip than a gentle downshift from 5th to 4th at freeway cruising speeds. The throttle response of the engine and its reciprocating mass also play a large role in how much throttle is needed to match revs. Being a 1980s turbocharged car, the aforementioned 944 Turbo has relatively lazy throttle response along with considerable engine reciprocating mass. Therefore, a healthy blip of the throttle pedal is required to match revs while downshifting. Conversely, an early 911S with individual throttle bodies and a lightweight, racing-derived crankshaft and light flywheel means that barely breathing on the

To properly execute a heel-toe downshift, one needs to practice braking with the ball of the right foot, as this is conducive to pivoting the foot while applying pressure to the brake pedal. To downshift from 4th to 3rd and match revs while braking, first apply the necessary pressure to the brake pedal. When the downshift is required, depress the clutch pedal while maintaining brake pressure with the right foot. Shift the lever from 4th to 3rd, but before releasing the clutch pedal, pivot the right foot and blip the throttle pedal as necessary using the outside/heel section of the foot, and then release the clutch pedal (while still maintaining braking pressure if necessary). If done properly, braking pressure will be maintained, and a smooth downshift with no drivetrain shock will occur if the engine RPM and wheel speed were properly matched. Continued on page 24

The proper way to match the engine and wheel speeds during a downshift is to “blip” the throttle pedal to the desired engine RPM while the clutch pedal is depressed and the engine and transmission are de-coupled. If done correctly, a subsequent quick release of the clutch pedal will result in a seamless downshift with no discernible shock through the drivetrain as the increased engine RPM allows the engine to smoothly “catch up” to the wheel speed.

This is what it looks like when the throttle is blipped to match revs while the clutch pedal is depressed. In this shot the benefit of using the ball of the foot on the brake pedal is clear, as it allows the foot to pivot as shown. JUNE 2O16 AUSPUFF DE R

Of course, not many of us have our Porsche’s gear ratio chart memorized, so the proper amount of throttle “blippage” varies based on the specific driving situation. An aggressive downshift to 2nd gear at 40 MPH will require more of a throttle

23

Rev-Matching/Heel-Toe Unsurprisingly, the above is much, much easier said than done! Heel-toe downshifting requires a lot of practice to master, but luckily it is something that can be practiced during gentle driving at legal road speeds. The first skill to practice is smoothly matching revs while downshifting as outlined earlier in the article. When proficiency is attained, the next step is to practice the heel-toe pivoting maneuver itself. This can initially be done while stationary and in neutral to get a feel for the pivoting action and how responsive the engine is to blipping the throttle pedal. The next step is to practice braking with the ball of the foot (or whichever part of the foot that works with your foot size/ pedal setup to allow easy pivoting to the throttle pedal). Finally, all of the steps can be put together and practiced on the road any time braking and downshifting are necessary. The particular pedal placement of the car is also a factor. Any water-cooled Porsche, from the 924/944/968 to Boxster to 991, has a pedal layout that is quite conducive to heel-toeing, with top-hinged brake and clutch pedals and a large, bottom-hinged throttle pedal. The pedal dance is a bit more difficult in any air-cooled Porsche, as each has VW-

Continued from page 23

derived, bottom-hinged brake and clutch pedals, with the brake pedal height being considerably higher than that of the throttle pedal; a triple-jointed ankle is helpful. However, the brake pedal height is adjustable to a certain extent via a pinch bolt in the 356 or a threaded rod in the 911/912/914. Aftermarket throttle pedal covers/extensions are also available. As your heel-toe skills progress, it will become apparent that gentle braking during street driving will be different from threshold braking while on track. During threshold braking, the brake pedal will be depressed further and with more pressure, and the downshift will often take place earlier, with a much more aggressive blip of the throttle to match revs. Therefore, once the basic heel-toe sequence is comfortably achieved during normal driving, the next step is to ramp it up by trying it out while “spiritedly” driving on your favorite back road. Once this is comfortable, heel-and-toeing on the autocross circuit and racetrack is quite doable. After heel-and-toe downshifting is achieved comfortably on track, the final frontier of the skill set is to reliably maintain proper braking pressure while simultaneously blipping the throttle and
