Rancho Guadalupe Dunes & Oso Flaco Lake Saturday, July 16, 2016
Just south of Guadalupe, California, lies an extraordinary and unique nature preserve featuring both the tallest dunes on the west coast (550 feet!) and the Santa Maria River Estuary. It is the largest remaining dune system south of San Francisco. We’ll stop here to enjoy both the ocean views and the impressive dunes.
Just north of Guadalupe is one of the most scenic natural areas along California’s coast, Oso Flaco Lake. A docent will give us some history of the dunes and the lake, including the story behind the filming of “The Ten Commandments” in the dunes area. We’ll walk out over the lake on a mile-long boardwalk to see incredible views of the dunes and the surrounding landscape. At the end of the boardwalk, a viewing platform affords panoramic vistas of the entire San Luis Bay, from Point San Luis in the north to Mussel Rock in the south.
After returning to our cars, we’ll drive a short distance to the Trilogy Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo for lunch. One of our SBR members has invited us here to enjoy the beautiful grounds and to meet other Porsche-owning guests who live in the area. So come out to enjoy a great drive to see some new sites and have a fun day with your Porsche buddies. The cost is only $40 per person, which includes the docent talk, lunch, parking fees and activity fee. If you have questions, contact Doreen Pankow at dpankow@sbcglobal.net No refunds will be made for cancellations after July 9, 2016.

Sharing
R
When it comes to my family, cars and airplanes as objects are not that interesting. However, the people who share my automotive and aviation passions are fun to be around, so it is easy for me to include my family in my activities.
ecently, I had the pleasure of hosting “Porsches & Propellers” at the Camarillo Airport. You can read and see more about the event in this issue of Der Auspuff. The day was an absolute joy for me, as I got to share my enthusiasm for two of my favorite hobbies, Porsches and vintage aircraft, with our members. Folks who attended were genuinely interested in both subjects, which made for a terrific audience. Nothing is more satisfying than teaching people something they wish to learn.
MIKE HODSON
My volunteer job as an aircraft museum docent puts me in contact with every sort of audience. Aviation enthusiasts and veterans are wonderful visitors. Many times, they should be the ones giving me the tour, with their knowledge and real world military experience. It is truly an honor to spend an hour or two with those who have actually “been there and done that.” They love to share their enthusiasm, and I relish their visits. School groups present a different opportunity. Spouting dry facts and figures about the aircraft will surely bore the students in no time, at which point they are lost for good. Being genuine is critical, as they can smell a phony from miles away. If I can reach one or two young minds and kindle a spark of interest, I feel satisfied.
Anyone who knows our son Chris realizes that his outgoing nature, inquisitive mind and incredible memory have helped him become an expert in identifying aircraft types. The Camarillo airport has become one of his favorite places, much like his Dad. We have spent many amazing hours cruising the field, visiting hangars and discussing every machine we see. Daughter Julie, now a Staff Sergeant in the USAF, is getting her indoctrination by osmosis. She is becoming quite proficient in her field and loves to educate us every time we see her. Ridiculously proud parents we are, without a doubt. Spreading the PCA message provokes different reactions from different groups. As with many premium brands, Porsche owners are often stereotyped as wealthy and arrogant, which is very sad. When telling people about our events and fun drives, my focus is on our members, not what they drive. Truly, the PCA motto is correct – it is the people, not the cars. I encourage everyone to share their enthusiasm. Whatever your passion -- sailing, painting, backpacking, cooking or who-knowswhat -- pass along your enjoyment to others. Having others with you during your most fun times will multiply the pleasure for all involved. Thanks to everyone in PCA for sharing my enthusiasm.

Help Us Fill The 2017 Activites Calendar
W
That’s why I’m soliciting your input on future club events. And not only am I interested in your ideas, but I’d love to encourage your direct help in planning and organizing an activity in the future. It’s not a daunting task. Many of the board members who’ve been active in the club for years stand ready and able to assist you should you decide to become more involved.
e are a busy bunch. The Santa Barbara Region continues to be one of the most active regions in the entire PCA. We are blessed with a vital and eager membership that supports our wide array of activities throughout the year. As you might suspect, these club events take some dedicated individuals to step up and help make them work. From idea conception to planning to execution, a successful SBR activity doesn’t just happen by itself...which brings me to the crux of this message to you. We’d love to hear from you about what you’d like the club to offer when it comes to future activities.
DOREEN PANKOW
Recurring favorites will always have a place on the annual calendar. Things like the Concours d’Elegance, which will mark its 40th anniversary this October, and the Chili Cook-Off (in its 20th year this September), are the backbone of our events lineup. But, we’d love to add some new ones to the mix.
And we truly hope that you will. Sometimes the best way to become better known in a club is to volunteer to help. Suggesting, planning and running a new club activity is an excellent way to get to know many of your fellow club members (both veteran and new) in a short period of time. I hope I’ve stimulated some thought and that you’ll contact me directly - or any other member of the board - with your ideas. The more we put into our club, the more we will all get out of it. I invite you to get more involved, meet some members, and get maximum enjoyment from one of the best car clubs in all of PCA. I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

RUSNAK CLASSIC OF THE MONTH
If you are in the market for one of the most original, unrestored Porsches, you need to look no further. This 1970 911T is one that you can be extremely proud to call your own. This 911 was sorted and driven properly and gently stored in a heated and sealed garage under a modern flannel car cover. It was NEVER washed with liquid nor left in the elements. It was loved and cared for these last 14+ years as if it were the original owner who had first driven it off the assembly line. We have some historical items that will follow with the car, such as: letter from Dr. Ferry Porsche, original registration from 1970, Certificate of Authenticity, etc. Please feel free to stop by to see this timeless beauty for yourself on our showroom floor. hat a recipe! Mix equal parts gorgeous automobiles, historic aircraft and fascinating people. Bake under perfect blue skies for three hours and -- voila! The predictable result was a delicious smorgasbord of spectacular photos, interesting history and unlimited smiles.
Approximately 40 of our members gathered at the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Museum at the Camarillo Airport for a total immersion introduction to World War II aviation history. The proliferation of pristine Porsches parked precisely on the pavement, safely guided by CAF ramp personnel. Once all present were adequately arranged, opening remarks were given explaining the outline for the day. Everyone was obviously excited and anxious to have their car photographed with a particular fighter, bomber or trainer. With 30-plus cars to be shot, patience was the asked-for buzzword for the day.

Continental breakfast was served in the main hangar, which provided many attendees the opportunity to nosh and mingle while waiting for their turn to shoot and be shot. At the same time, museum tours were led by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer docents, giving our members the opportunity to learn probably more than they ever thought possible about those magnificent men and women and their flying machines. Organizer extraordinaire Ted Lighthizer had rounded up four dedicated, talented and hard-working photographers for the day. Erick Bech, Robert Bright, Randy Fishwick and Ron Williams all did yeoman service not only by taking pictures,
but also for arranging the cars in the best possible settings, backgrounds, light conditions and who knows what else to get the best possible shots. They work their magic, however they do it, and we thank all the guys for their efforts. After everyone had gotten their fill of food, photos and fun, the ramp started to empty. Soon the aircraft were back in the hangars, and the minimal cleanup duties were completed. The only thing left was to enjoy the photos, which were posted online for all to savor. Special thanks go to the CAF staff for their work. Mission accomplished! =

O
ur annual Memorial Day weekend trip started in Santa Barbara, where we met to commence our journey north to the San Francisco Bay Area. We enjoyed relatively light traffic, and after a group lunch in Paso Robles, we arrived at the Bay Landing Hotel in Burlingame mid-afternoon. Ideally located right on the bay, the hotel has sweeping views, which include aircraft landing and taking off from the San Francisco Airport. (Luckily for us, double-paned windows allowed us to watch the planes but not hear them.) That night we walked next door for an enjoyable Mexican buffet at the El Torito restaurant and the opportunity to see old friends and welcome new ones.
front of the house. This car was owned by the Kallers and leased to the film company.
Saturday dawned sunny and bright for our day of sightseeing and touring. First on the agenda was a tour of the gardens and mansion at the Filoli estate in Woodside on the San Francisco peninsula. The name “Filoli” is an abbreviated acronym chosen by William Bourn, the owner and builder of the estate, and embodies Mr. Bourn’s life philosophy: Fight for just cause, Love your fellow man and Live a good life.
The next day, we were able to immerse ourselves in the sights and scenes of San Francisco from our comfortable seats on a chartered minibus with local tour guide, Rick Spear. Rick took us all over the city and talked about the many areas we visited: Civic Center, Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, Chinatown, Union Square, North Beach, the Presidio and finally, the stunning views from Twin Peaks. Besides the geographic span of our tour, we learned
After lunch at Filoli, we departed for a drive that took us through beautiful stands of pines, rustic mountain towns of the Santa Cruz Mountains, to the rugged coast between the tiny village of Pescadero and Half Moon Bay, where our drive ended. With its stunning scenery and sparsely populated areas, it was hard to believe that this part of the San Francisco peninsula was within 15 or 20 miles of the rest of the bustling Bay Area and the city of San Francisco.
MEMORIAL DAY BY THE BAY
Santa Barbara Region In San Francisco
STORY BY JEANNE MCNAIR EVENT PHOTOS BY DON DICKEY & JEFF PARKER Filoli, a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, remains the sole intact estate from an era when San Francisco’s wealthiest families created grand showplaces south of the city in the years after the 1906 earthquake. Our group was given a docent-led tour of both the palatial home, which included an enormous ballroom, and the beautiful landscaped grounds. The estate was originally situated on 654 acres adjacent to the sylvan Crystal Springs reservoir with 16 acres of formal gardens, pools and brickwork. The gardens were laid like outside “rooms” with sweeping views from many vantage points. The gardens are still a great draw for the over 100,000 people who tour the property annually.
many historic facts of interest. Rick spoke about the devastating and long-range effects of the 1906 earthquake and fire. A little known but interesting fact pertains to the wide expanse of one of the city’s main thoroughfares, Van Ness Avenue. As the earthquake destroyed the water system, there was no way to put out the raging fires. As a result, one whole side of Van Ness was detonated to create a firebreak, which stopped the spread of the fire.
As a coincidence, two of our trip participants, Janet and Steve Kaller, have a connection to Filoli which we learned about on this trip. The exterior of Filoli was used in the 1980’s TV series “Dynasty” as the fictional Carrington ancestral seat. When the camera pans in on the estate, there is beautiful Rolls Royce parked in
Our Bay Area trip ended with a great group dinner in nearby Burlingame at the Il Fornaio restaurant. And despite this being a Porsche drive weekend, many of our members opted to arrive at the restaurant via Uber. =
Near the end of our tour, we were treated to a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge to a vista point near Sausalito. Typical of San Francisco, the winds were ferocious and the air frigid, but the views were fantastic.

SBR Helps Fulfill A Wish STORY BY MIKE HODSON, PHOTOS VIA KENNY BRUNDRETT
I
am extremely pleased to report on the Make-A-Wish Foundation Presentation Party held Saturday, June 4 in Ventura.
Attendees included the “Wish Family,” consisting of Mom, Dad, sister Emma, and of course Wish-Kid James; wish granters Mary and Angel; SBR representatives Chet & Joan Yabitsu, Kenny & Tara Brundrett as well as Mike, Pam and Chris Hodson. Appetizers were served as the group chatted and got acquainted. Soon the restaurant mascot, “Spike,” showed up, outfitted in a very cute dragon costume. It was a great touch that helped everyone relax and have fun. The atmosphere was very warm with no awkward moments.
short drive, it was impossible to tell who had the best time. Everyone was beaming and excited. During the entire event, all of the family members were thankful and gracious. The looks on their faces spoke volumes as to how they were feeling. Nothing surpasses the joy of giving if the gift is truly appreciated. All the members of the Santa Barbara Region should feel very good about our contribution. Thanks to everyone in PCA-SBR for making a material difference in our little corner of the world. =
Following the main dishes and chocolate-covered fortune cookies(!), Mary made the formal wish presentation, including airline and ground transportation details, spending money for the kids and excursion money for the family. As a bonus, a goodie bag of items was given to James to help make the flight more fun. After a bit of encouragement, James agreed to go for a ride in the Brundretts’ 928. Dad and sister filled the remaining seats, making sure James felt comfortable. Upon their return from the DE R
