THE PETERSEN MUSEUM TOUR
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016
Enjoy a great day at the newly renovated and highly acclaimed Petersen Automotive Museum. The new façade of the Petersen has been deemed one of Los Angeles’ great architectural accomplishments. It must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. We’ll meet at 8:15 a.m. in the NW corner of Costco’s parking lot at 5700 Lindero Canyon Rd., Westlake Village. Departure time is 8:45 a.m. Because of traffic and parking considerations, car-pooling is recommended.
The museum reopened last December after an extensive, $90-million renovation. We have arranged for a docent led highlight tour of the museum. In addition, for those who wish to see more, a separate tour of the Petersen’s vast underground vault will be available. Each tour lasts about one hour.
The highlight tour is designed to give visitors an overview of all three floors of the Petersen, visiting each of the display areas. The highlight tour starts at 10:15 a.m. and the optional vault tour starts at 12:30 p.m. The fee for this spectacular day, which includes general admission, the highlight docent tour and the activity fee is only $30 per person. The optional vault docent tour is an additional $20 per person. Parking is $12 per car - paid at the time of parking. For lunch you will be on your own with several different options. You can bring your own sack lunch, you can eat at the museum (if their restaurant is open by the time of our visit) or you can eat at one of the many nearby restaurants (a list will be provided upon registration). For questions contact Howard Rubenstein at hrrca1@gmail.com or (818) 340-3366.
Please mail your check (payable to PCA/SBR) to arrive no later than November 12th to: Howard Rubenstein, 1612 Strandway Ct, Westlake Village, CA 91361.

ticeable. Those of us with very literal personalities can relate to the obstacles he faces each and every day.
nybody who has been around me even for a very short time knows how proud I am of my family. Pamuela is an absolute dynamo, bursting at the seams with energy. She’s ready, willing and able to help out with a relative, friend or neighbor in need. Thankfully, during the toughest days of dealing with me and my less-than-charming, business-owner attitude, she was always Super Mom, finding the ideal balance between love and discipline, a skill the world needs in huge quantities. Very proud of her Full-Time Mom title, the kids and I benefitted hugely. Quilt show queen, air show assistant, Camarillo Fiesta “organize everything and anybody,” she is the one you want on the task. Not willing to settle for mediocrity, her standards are high, and she expects the same from those around her. Just ask me!
Daughter Julie has blossomed in her USAF career, evolving from a stereotypical teenager into the strong, independent woman she is today. Ready to take on the world and roll with the punches that the Air Force has thrown her way, she continues to emerge a more resilient, more mature person than we ever could have imagined. My docent tours at the World War II aviation museum always include proud mention of our daughter. To describe me as “bursting with pride” would be quite an understatement.

Son Chris has transformed his challenges into assets that touch everyone he contacts. With an unflappably positive attitude and genuine friendliness to match, Chris brightens every situation he encounters. Four volunteer jobs have taught him the joy of giving. Nothing pleases him more than making other people happy. Despite the “bull in a China shop” outward persona often superficially displayed, Chris is hypersensitive to the feelings of those around him. The last thing he wants to do is upset people, which would make him very sad. Constantly learning the impossibly complicated subtleties of human interaction has been a huge mountain to climb; however, improvement is constant and no-
During my working career, I tried to lead by example. Showing pride in our company, the products we sold and the employees was contagious, although not everyone caught the bug. Presenting oneself in a professional manner sends a strong, positive message and reaps tremendous rewards. It is with great pleasure and pride that I am a part of PCA and, especially, the Santa Barbara Region. The cars that bring us together are created and refined by passionate engineers, willing to sweat endlessly over every detail so that we as enthusiasts can enjoy an array of Porsche vehicles that no other manufacturer can touch. Our Board members take much pride in making PCA/SBR the best it can be, which shows in the numerous national awards we have won over the years. Ours is a rich legacy built by many people over many years. Maintaining that legacy is a big responsibility. Together, we will make it happen. Thanks to everyone for their dedication and commitment.

Level ISN’T IT ABOUT TIME YOU TRIED AN AUTOCROSS?
STORY BY GLEN CRAWFORD, SBR AUTOCROSS CO-CHAIR
S
o you love driving your Porsche. It’s fantastic. You have an amazing vehicle, but deep down, you know that something important is missing. If you’ve ever foolishly attempted to “open up” your vehicle at all in the Los Angeles area, you probably experienced the bright red and blue lights followed by a written invitation to see a judge, delivered by one of the city’s finest. All this car and nowhere to go -- or is there? A select few of us have found places and people to take our Porsches out to play. This is the Matrix red pill/ blue pill scene. Stop reading here if you want to stay as is. Otherwise, I will lead you down the rabbit hole, and you’ll experience and learn things you never knew before. You’ll never be the same again, I promise.
Yeah. You noticed the word “trying” in there, didn’t you? If you do it right, there will be occasional failures and some contact with the little orange rubber cones. And no, they will not hurt your precious vehicle. There are many locally sponsored Porsche Autocrosses each year. You can even compete for points with your new friends if you do at least three events. Once you find an event, register yourself, your car and pay the fee, which is normally less than $100. Check the box to ask for an instructor.
The first step to discovering what you and your Porsche can do safely is to find an Autocross event. It’s easy, and here’s the link you need: http://zone8.pca.org/events_ax.php.
Now a little preparation: It’s a good idea to have your car looked at by a good mechanic a week or two before you run any event and definitely for your first. If the mechanic is Porsche certified, he may even be able to complete your Tech Inspection Form with you. Confirm with your event organizer that a helmet will be available to loan or rent. If not, secure mandated head protection from another source.
The Autocross term is defined by the PCA as “a sport of trying to navigate your car through a defined course of pylons, usually on a large parking lot, faster than your competition.” Easy, right?
Day of the event: Show up on time, check in, follow the registration instructions, get the colored masking tape out and put your assigned number on both doors. Make sure your car is emptied

End of the day: Help clean up. You will have accomplished many things, but most importantly and in no particular order, you should have met a few great people, gotten a workout, experienced all possible emotions and acquired significant new driving skills. All of this will result in a huge smile and a hunger to do it again. Final step: Drive home safely – you are no longer on the track, and everything is going to feel really slow.
Next there will be a Drivers Meeting, and then you’ll join your driving instructor. I may get in trouble for this, but the instructor’s job is to help you enjoy yourself.
Did I mention this might be habit forming?
Now comes the fun part -- you get to drive the course! Your heart should be pounding. It’s okay, just smile. Now it’s only you on the course with your car and the instructor in the passenger’s seat. Start slow, listen and learn. With each lap or run, you’ll be able to try a little more and get faster.
Come and say hi!
At the end of the day, you’ll get three officially Timed Laps (without your instructor). It’s time to see what you learned. Don’t try anything new. Just do as you practiced and do your best.
I’ll see you out there.
Enjoy. =

of anything that could move, including floor mats. Sounds silly? Wait until something you missed flies by suddenly. Park your car in the assigned colored run group. Then it’s time to find out where you’re going to “try” to drive, and it’s called a Track Walk. You’re going to walk from the start to the finish, looking to familiarize yourself with the map. Walk with someone who appears to know what they’re doing, and listen to their explanation of how to drive the track.

GUADALUPE DUNESSaturday, & OSO FLACO LAKE July 16, 2016 STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER
This is the largest, most ecologically diverse dunes complex in California, stretching from Pismo Beach in the north to Point Sal in the south. This extraordinary nature preserve, featuring towering 550-foot-high dunes, is the tallest on the west coast and is the largest remaining dune system (22,000 acres) south of San Francisco. After a brief stop, we backtracked to the CA-1 and drove through the small agricultural town of Guadalupe and out to the Oso Flaco Lake State Park. This lake is one of the most scenic natural areas along California’s coast and has more than 100 rare species of wildlife and 24 species of rare plants. This wildlife refuge was established to protect the breeding habitat for the endangered California least tern and the western snowy plover. We were met by Peter Zajac and Deborah Fialkowski, who were our docents. As we walked along the boardwalk that crossed over the lake, they gave us a brief history of the dunes and the lake, pointing out lots of local flora and wildlife. They also told the interesting story behind the filming of the Ten Commandments in the dunes area.
The 18-mile stretch of California’s Central Coast between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties served as a key location in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 film “The Ten Commandments.” But as memories of the production faded, DeMille’s plaster-and-concrete metropolis vanished. DeMille buried a virtual cinema museum in the Guadalupe Dunes. Some of the set was recovered by filmmaker Peter Brosnan, but most of the artifacts remain buried in the sand. According to Brosnan, the “Ten Commandments” artifacts represent some of the rarest relics of the silent film era. Most of our members walked the three-mile round trip to see incredible views of the dunes and the surrounding landscape. At the end of the boardwalk, we stood on a viewing platform affording scenic views of the entire San Luis Bay from Point San Luis in the north to Mussel Rock in the south. After returning to our cars, we went a short distance to the Monarch Club at the Trilogy Monarch Dunes complex in Nipomo for lunch. Chris Alderi, Monarch Club General Manager and also a SBR member, invited us to come and enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Chris also arranged for the Trilogy Sports Car Club to join us. They brought in 17 sports cars that were all impeccably maintained and on display on the sidewalks and patio. My favorite cars were a 1934 Triumph, a 1971 Jaguar XKE and a 1974 Corvette. Participants were delighted with the lunch and the unique display of beautiful cars. Our trip couldn’t have ended at a better venue. =

here was a light marine layer in Santa Barbara when 70 members met for the start of our fun trip, but the sun came out as we moved inland towards the Santa Ynez Valley. Driving 38 Porsches, we headed over the San Marcos Pass and then turned west through Los Alamos on CA-135 and north on CA1. When we reached Guadalupe, we drove to the county park and took a very narrow and sandy road out to the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Park located just past the Santa Maria River Estuary.

The Tech Report
Retrospective: Porsche 964 Turbo & Turbo 3.6
AUSPUFF SEPTEMBER 2O16

22
ARTICLE BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
Turn back the clock a quarter of a century, however, and things in Stuttgart were decidedly different. After the company’s great success during the heady days of the go-go 1980s, Porsche was in the midst of a long hangover induced by the global economic downturn of the latter part of that decade along with a steep decline in the value of the US dollar against the Deutsch Mark, which hurt the buying power that was previously enjoyed by American customers. (By then, the US was by far Porsche’s largest market.) By the late 1980s, Porsche was strapped for cash, yet it still needed a flagship car to replace the long-serving 930-series 911 Turbo. The 959 supercar is often mentioned in these pages as the progenitor of modern, electronically controlled Porsches, and a somewhat simplified successor had been in the works. This project was initially dubbed the Type 965, with 969 later being chosen as its marketing name. The 969 was to feature a 959-based, twinturbocharged flat-six with water-cooled 24-valve cylinder heads and a simplified all-wheel-drive system based on that of the upcoming 964 Carrera 4, with torque being channeled through an optional PDK gearbox. The 969 body style was to be a preview of the smoothed and swept-back styling of the future 993 series. According to Karl Ludvigsen’s seminal work, Porsche: Excellence Was Expected, Porsche produced sixteen 965 prototypes that underwent the company’s grueling test regime. However, keeping the fourvalve-per-cylinder heads cool was proving to be problematic, so Porsche changed tack and considered both V6 and V8 versions of its stillborn Indy-car engine for installation in the 969/965. Unfortunately, packaging and cost constraints made the idea of the Indy engine a non-starter, even when installed in a simplified RWD chassis.
Alas, in late 1988, Porsche decided to scrap the 965/969 project entirely. In its stead, a crash program was initiated to conjure a worthy 964-based successor to the 930. Budget constraints forced Porsche to adapt a version of the 930’s 3.3-liter, aircooled flat-six to what was to become the 964 Turbo. The normally-aspirated 911 had Bosch electronic fuel injection from the 1984 model year, and Porsche would have preferred to adapt such a system to the 964 Turbo engine; but they were forced to retain the 930’s trusty CIS/K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection system, albeit with a number of electronic controls “piggybacked” onto the fuel injection system to help reduce emissions and enhance performance. The 964T did benefit from the regular 964’s updated body styling and HVAC/ electrical system and coil-sprung suspension. (Some refer to the 964 Turbo as the “965,” and indeed a number of its unique parts have a 965 prefix, but the 965 designation refers to the ill-fated junior 959 successor.) Anti-lock brakes were also standard in conjunction with the electrohydraulic brake booster system of the 964 Carrera 4 and upsized brake calipers and rotors. As introduced in the final 1989 version of the 930, the G50 5-speed gearbox proved sufficiently durable to channel the 964T’s 320 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharger and its ancillaries added a full 85 lbs. to the rear of the 964T, which could have served to perpetuate the turbocharged 911’s status as a “widow-maker.” At the time, electronic traction/stability control was in its infancy and would not have been adaptable to the 964T’s CIS-based engine. So, Porsche put its vast experience of calibrating limited slip differentials (LSDs) of race cars to use and utilized the 964T’s LSD as a sort of crude, mechanical form of stability control. Special ramps in the LSD enabled the rear wheels to fully lock during deceleration, which helped to stabilize the rear end to prevent the snap oversteer of the tail-heavy 911s and 930s. Though the 964T appeared to have been cobbled together at the last hour, contemContinued on page 24

sulting Turbo 3.6 made 355 hp and 384 lbft of torque, which enabled it to blast from 0-60 MPH in only 4.4 seconds. This was supercar territory at the time! The Turbo 3.6 also featured a unique set of 18”, three-piece Speedline alloy wheels,
editions featured an uprated “S” engine package with a larger turbocharger and revised camshafts, which made a full 380 hp. Unsurprisingly, the Turbo 3.3 and 3.6 have been increasingly coveted by collectors, despite their “parts bin” status; Turbo 3.6s in particular have been trading hands for some eye-popping prices of late. Overall, the 964T is a great example of what Porsche’s engineers were and are capable of, even with limited resources. =
An example of a 964 Turbo 3.3 with the original 17” Cup wheels. ABS and the improved HVAC system. However, a skilled hand was still required to extract maximum performance, which made the 964T a favorite of some notable racing drivers of the era. Due to the aforementioned economic conditions of the time, sales numbers were low, with a worldwide production figure of only 3,660 3.3-liter 964 Turbos made from 1991-1993.
which served to showcase the larger “big red” brake calipers. While these calipers were only slightly larger than before and of the same Brembo manufacture as the black-painted calipers of the 964T 3.3, this marked the first time that any auto manufacturer used distinctive brake caliper finish as a styling feature. This practice remains ubiquitous to this day, and it helped

For the 1994 model year, Porsche released the revamped 993 model line and decided to make the RWD 964 Turbo series go out with a bang. The engine was reconfigured to use the updated engine case of the regular 964, along with its 100MM cylinder bore and 76.4MM stroke. The re24 AUSPUFF SEPTEMBER 2O16

THE PETERSEN MUSEUM TOUR NEW EVEN
T
SBR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016 Enjoy a great day at the newly renovated and highly acclaimed Petersen Automotive Museum.
