Wine Country Harvest Tour 2016 Paso Robles Wine Country - October 22 & 23 Celebrate the 2016 Fall Harvest with a weekend adventure in the beautiful Paso Robles Wine Country October 22-23. We will meet Saturday morning (8:30) at Santa Barbara Auto Group for coffee and pastries prior to our 9:30 a.m. departure. Porsche’s latest offerings, including the new 911 and 718 Boxster, are being made available to drive during our weekend! Some of the most picturesque back roads on the central coast await us, as we make our way to Adelaida, a world class winery which recently earned the designation of being a Certified California Sustainable Winery & Vineyard. Located on a 2,200-foot hilltop site, it offers spectacular views of the Santa Lucia Mountains. There will be a special Winemakers Lunch accompanied by a wonderful selection of Adelaida wines in their new Barrel Room. After lunch, we’ll drive to the historic Paso Robles Inn located on the idyllic town square. Following check in, explore the unique shops, art galleries, and boutiques or just relax in the garden setting of the Inn. Saturday evening, we will gather in the original ballroom built in 1891 for appetizers, free wine pouring and an open bar, followed by a Harvest Tour Banquet dinner. A special gift for all will be provided by the Santa Barbara Auto Group.

Sunday after breakfast, we depart at 10:30 for a beautiful drive to Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden, one of the most unusual wineries on the central coast. Enjoy the magnificent sculptures, special wine pouring, cheese platters, and a gift bag of the largest tastiest pistachios in all of California.

The cost for the weekend is $125 per person, which includes the Winemaker’s Lunch, evening reception, Harvest Dinner Banquet, and Sunday’s lite fare. All the wine for the weekend will be free! Send your check payable to PCA/SBR to Michael & Beverly Brovsky, 1237 S. Victoria Avenue, Box 440, Oxnard, CA 93035.

Space is limited to 40 rooms, so sign up early. Call the Paso Robles Inn 1-800-676-1713 and request rooms in the Porsche Club of America Block at the rate of $230.00. Reservations must be made before 09/22/2016 to guarantee your room. Questions? Contact Michael Brovsky at michael@samsonig.com

THE PETERSEN MUSEUM TOUR

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016

Enjoy a great day at the newly renovated and highly acclaimed Petersen Automotive Museum. The new façade of the Petersen has been deemed one of Los Angeles’ great architectural accomplishments. It must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. We’ll meet at 8:15 a.m. in the NW corner of Costco’s parking lot at 5700 Lindero Canyon Rd., Westlake Village. Departure time is 8:45 a.m. Because of traffic and parking considerations, car-pooling is recommended.

The museum reopened last December after an extensive, $90-million renovation. We have arranged for a docent led highlight tour of the museum. In addition, for those who wish to see more, a separate tour of the Petersen’s vast underground vault will be available. Each tour lasts about one hour.

The highlight tour is designed to give visitors an overview of all three floors of the Petersen, visiting each of the display areas. The highlight tour starts at 10:15 a.m. and the optional vault tour starts at 12:30 p.m. The fee for this spectacular day, which includes general admission, the highlight docent tour and the activity fee is only $30 per person. The optional vault docent tour is an additional $20 per person. Parking is $12 per car - paid at the time of parking. For lunch you will be on your own with several different options. You can bring your own sack lunch, you can eat at the museum (if their restaurant is open by the time of our visit) or you can eat at one of the many nearby restaurants (a list will be provided upon registration). For questions contact Howard Rubenstein at hrrca1@gmail.com or (818) 340-3366.

Please mail your check (payable to PCA/SBR) to arrive no later than November 12th to: Howard Rubenstein, 1612 Strandway Ct, Westlake Village, CA 91361.

Volunteers

W

MIKE HODSON

ithout a huge cadre of volunteers, PCA would be a shadow of its current self. At the National level, officers and staff apply their expertise to every possible facet of our club. Each zone has an experienced, dedicated group of people ensuring that the regions are living up to the rich traditions of 61 years of PCA excellence.

Locally, the Santa Barbara Region has 20 board members who put in long hours, making our region the best it can be. The fact that we have been named Region of the Year twice, plus numerous awards for our Der Auspuff newsletter, is a validation of our efforts. Our members volunteer for a wide variety of reasons. Some enjoy the results of a team effort, which can be much greater than the sum of its parts. Others feel compelled to continue their personal productivity and professional expertise following a long career in the business world. My personal motivation was a desire to be a participant in PCA, not a spectator. Helping others to enjoy the passion of Porsches has been a wonderful journey. Pamuela and I, along with a small group from our region, recently visited northern California for the PCA Treffen Lake Tahoe tour (see page 12). Our hosts, the Sierra Nevada Region plus national PCA staff, planned for two years to make the three-day event a success. Countless volunteer hours were spent researching the area, arranging fabulous accommodations, coordinating interesting guided tours of local attractions, mapping fun drives to intriguing destinations, and planning social activities including two excellent dinners. As guests, we enjoyed the benefits of all the hard work contributed by the many who donated their services. As volunteers in our own region, we appreciated their efforts even more. The event was a smash success from all accounts, with the added bonus of perfect weather every day. As time goes by and I get a little older (heaven forbid!), it is easy to become cynical about the current state of society. Selfishness and hedonism seem to be running rampant, with no end in sight.

I’m sure my parents felt the same about my generation when we were growing up in the rebellious 1960s. So what can we do to help? I encourage everyone to seek out volunteer activities, not only with PCA but in their community as well. A little bit of effort can make a big difference in people’s lives, and the opportunities are endless. We all have amazing skills and real-world life experience. Sharing those skills is very rewarding. Each one of us has worked hard to achieve a quality lifestyle, for which we can be very thankful. My life is filled with happiness from family, friends and interests. By volunteering, I get to share some of my good fortune with those around me. Although I am unable to make the whole world a better place, I can certainly improve a small portion of it. Mom & Dad were right – it is better to give than to receive.

Letter To The Editor I’ve been a PCA member for 12 years. I just wanted to take a moment and recognize what a great support group this club has, especially when it comes to our good friends at both Rusnak Porsche in Thousand Oaks and the Santa Barbara Auto Group. I recently took an extended drive in my Porsche across the country, stopping in Phoenix, Denver, and eventually on to New Jersey and the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The drive was a great experience and the scenery was amazing. Heading back, I encountered a problem returning to New Jersey. 4900 miles of driving and the oil separator on my car was creating problems. I got on the phone and called Mark Lynch at Rusnak. Mark took the time out of his busy day to help diagnose the problem (over the phone!). I then called Jason Hornerman, our Brand Ambassador at Santa Barbara Auto Group. Jason helped me “price out” what the repair should cost so that I wouldn’t be taken advantage of while away from my home dealer. My sincere thanks to both Mark and Jason. It’s very gratifying to know that as a PCA/SBR member you can reach out for help and receive assistance from people you trust. My regards to everyone in the best club in the country!

Dinner at Prime Steakhouse in Agoura.

ER 2016 Saturday, August 27th,

was a picture perfect day, and the Santa Barbara Region indulged in three of the club’s favorite pastimes: driving Porsches, savoring delicious food and enjoying the camaraderie of other PCA members.

O

ur region has been holding Progressive Dinners combined with spirited drives since the late 1960s. This event included a stop at a member’s home for a first course of salads and appetizers, followed by a visit to a fine restaurant for the main entrée and finishing with the final stop at another member’s home for coffee and dessert. Most of the 90 SBR members participating in this occasion gathered for check-in at the meeting point by the Way-Point Cafe. After the drivers’ meeting, we were ready to start the 45mile journey to the first home. The first 24 miles of our drive took the 40 Porsches from the Camarillo Airport to Potrero Road for some fun, twisty roads. We then turned onto Lynn Road and drove through Thousand Oaks to connect to Westlake Boulevard and Kanan Road, ending at the home of Elliot and Debi Michaels where the Porsche flag was prominently displayed. There we were treated to an enticing variety of Caesar, spinach and fruit salads. Appetizers included prawns, fresh strawberries

and egg rolls. Iced tea and water were also provided to cool us down. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Michaels’ magnificent home and beautiful backyard. After a few comments by our president, Mike Hodson, we departed for the second leg of our tour, a five-mile drive to the Prime Steakhouse in Agoura Hills. Once there, some of the group ordered cocktails before our main entrées arrived, which included prime chateau, salmon, breast of chicken and lamb osso bucco, all served with tasty accompaniments. After our satisfying meal, we drove another eight miles to our final destination, the beautiful, inviting home of Dick and Linda Lange. Inside, we were greeted with a tempting array of desserts that included a variety of cheesecakes, decadent chocolate cake,

cookies and lemon bars. Most of us sat outside on their patio to take in the comfortable evening temperatures and the fellowship of friends. It was the perfect end to another fun-filled and memorable SBR event. The club’s sincere thanks go out to our hosts, Elliot and Debi Michaels as well as Dick and Linda Lange. We greatly appreciate their generosity, warm hospitality and the sharing of their lovely homes. I’d also like to thank Becky Lundberg and Jeff Parker for all the help they provided with set-up and food preparations at the Michaels’ home. Thanks also to Phyllis Weaver for bringing the excellent spinach salad. It’s the volunteers that make our events so successful, and we’re truly grateful for all of you! =

I

t was another successful event for all participants at the detail clinic held on September 17th. Twenty-one participants in 14 Porsches, including several first-time participants, gathered at Lavaggio in Agoura Hills to learn about all things concours.

Kenny Brundrett welcomed everyone and thanked Lavaggio for hosting us for six years in a row. Dustin Troyan, Marketing Director, gave a brief overview of the many services offered by Lavaggio. Then, Gabe Gutierrez gave a demonstration on interior detailing, including how to properly clean and preserve your leather, techniques for shampooing your carpet, and tips on how to clean a canvas convertible top. Gabriel’s expertise showcased again how Lavaggio provides car care with their specialized touch.

gio’s bistro. It was also quite nice to be inside enjoying the air conditioning. The afternoon session kicked off with a great interactive conversation about what to expect from a concours, including the different divisions and areas of your car that can be judged. Special thanks to Caroline Ewbank for her specific knowledge on a judge’s perspective. Then, Kenny Brundrett shared different tips and tricks that have been successful for us, including the various brushes, Q-tips, and towels (you can never have enough!). Not to mention the various uses for chopsticks and the types of grease that are acceptable. What?

As our appetite for detailing and prepping cars grew, Lavaggio delivered when we headed inside where a wonderful lunch was waiting for us. We all enjoyed the healthy sandwiches, salads, fresh fruit, chips, and especially the cookies provided by Lavag-

Our special thanks to all the first-time participants, Kenny Brundrett, and the wonderful staff at Lavaggio for making this another memorable event. We look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s concours at Fess Parker Doubletree Resort in Santa Barbara on October 9th. Registration information can be found in this issue on page six. It should be another unforgettable Santa Barbara Region event. =

THE PETERSEN MUSEUM TOUR

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016 Enjoy a great day at the newly renovated and highly acclaimed Petersen Automotive Museum.

MINUTES RECORDED BY HOWARD RUBENSTEIN

The following reports and discussions were presented:

Secretary:

The September 2016 bimonthly board meeting minutes taken by Howard Rubenstein were approved as submitted.

Vice President: No Report. Treasurer: The financials show strong results and the cash balance continues to build. Jim Brown reported on the following Financial Statements for August 2016: (1) Income & Expense Previous Year Comparison August 2016, (2) Income & Expense Previous Year Comparison January through August 2016, (3) Statement of Cash Flows January through August 2016, (4) Income & Expense January through August 2016, (5) Balance Sheet Previous Year Comparison August 2016. Jim Brown advised the Board that the year-to-date cash flow is down $18,000.00 compared to the same period year. A request will be made to have the Income and Expense of the activities reported monthly.

Membership: During the month of August, seven new members joined our region. At the end of August our membership stood at 758 Primary (490 Affiliate) and 1 life members. Activities: Mike Hodson and Doreen Pankow met with Don Dickey, the new cochair of Activities, to review and draft the 2017 calendar of events. The 2017 Memorial Day event may be a trip to Mammoth and the Sierras. Doreen suggested and

proposed that the annual Chili Cook-Off trophy remain at the Middlebrooks’ home. Also, discussion was held regarding 50/50 drawing at the Concours and Silent Auction to be held at the Holiday Brunch.

Editor: No Report. John Alfenito took delivery of and showed the Board the First Place in Class IV Newsletter trophy awarded at the Porsche Parade this year. Distribution: On August 25, 2016, 773 copies of the September Der Auspuff were mailed at a postage cost of $360.73. The balance in the Post Office account is $1,072.72, which will cover two (and possibly three) future mailings. Advertising: Two new clients were added and no drops this month. Currently there are ten outstanding invoices and one is overdue. George North requested that our region website be updated to represent only current advertisers. Goodie Store: No Report. Insurance: All certificates for events that require them have been ordered through November and everything is current. Concours: Tara Brundrett announced that next year’s Detail Clinic would be on September 9, 2017 at Lavaggio. She informed the Board that advance registrations for this year’s Concours are extremely low and, potentially, the club may lose a substantial amount of money. It was concluded that an email blast will immediately be sent and the flyer in the upcoming Der Auspuff will be amended to allow registration via mail.

Archives: No Report. Webmaster: No Report. Safety: No Report. Porsche Mademoiselle Society: No report.

R.U.F.: No Report. Public Relations: Articles on our visit to the Guadalupe Dunes and our Progressive Dinner have been submitted to Panorama for publication. Our region made the lead article in the “FROM THE REGIONS” on our outing to the Commemorative Air Force Museum.

Past President: No Report President: Mike Hodson suggested that the club participate in a national food drive around the holiday season in conjunction with our Holiday Brunch. It was discussed and decided to revisit the subject next year. The future of the RUF and Porsche Mademoiselle Society sub-groups was brought up. It was decided to solicit for a new R.U.F. chairperson(s) by doing an email blast and an ad in Der Auspuff. Also, it was decided to eliminate the Mademoiselles. There were 11 members from PCA/SBR at Treffen Lake Tahoe. Meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

The Last Word

DON’T BE THIS GUY In the Porsche-packed parking lot at the Inn at Squaw Creek Resort in Squaw Valley during the recent PCA Treffen, there were just enough parking spots for all the beautiful P-cars in attendance. Sometimes, returning from a scheduled drive or other event, finding a parking place was a little tricky. And then there was this guy. We have no idea whose car this is or even from what region the owner hails, but we do know a selfish parking job when we see one. Don’t be this guy.
