THE PETERSEN MUSEUM TOUR

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016

Enjoy a great day at the newly renovated and highly acclaimed Petersen Automotive Museum. The new façade of the Petersen has been deemed one of Los Angeles’ great architectural accomplishments. It must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. We’ll meet at 8:15 a.m. in the NW corner of Costco’s parking lot at 5700 Lindero Canyon Rd., Westlake Village. Departure time is 8:45 a.m. Because of traffic and parking considerations, car-pooling is recommended.

The museum reopened last December after an extensive, $90-million renovation. We have arranged for a docent led highlight tour of the museum. In addition, for those who wish to see more, a separate tour of the Petersen’s vast underground vault will be available. Each tour lasts about one hour.

The highlight tour is designed to give visitors an overview of all three floors of the Petersen, visiting each of the display areas. The highlight tour starts at 10:15 a.m. and the optional vault tour starts at 12:30 p.m. The fee for this spectacular day, which includes general admission, the highlight docent tour and the activity fee is only $30 per person. The optional vault docent tour is an additional $20 per person. Parking is $12 per car - paid at the time of parking. For lunch you will be on your own with several different options. You can bring your own sack lunch, you can eat at the museum (if their restaurant is open by the time of our visit) or you can eat at one of the many nearby restaurants (a list will be provided upon registration). For questions contact Howard Rubenstein at hrrca1@gmail.com or (818) 340-3366.

Please mail your check (payable to PCA/SBR) to arrive no later than November 12th to: Howard Rubenstein, 1612 Strandway Ct, Westlake Village, CA 91361.

The President’s Column Be a wonderful role model to everyone. Take the high road, even though it may be tougher and longer and more challenging than the easy way. The dark side can be tempting and convenient. Remember that when we are gone, the greatest compliment will be that more people should be like we were.

Remember

D

uring our journey through life, we encounter many different people, places, things and events. Some of these encounters and people are memorable due to their uniqueness, some are unforgettably positive and, hopefully, a small minority are those we wish to erase forever from our memory banks.

Appreciate the abundance that we share in our lives. Remember the ultimate sacrifices made by so many that allow us to have the quality of life unmatched anywhere in the world. Take the time to express your gratitude to those who have served and those who currently serve, because they have given more than we can ever imagine.

MIKE HODSON

In a perfect world, each experience or interaction would be a learning experience. Good, bad or indifferent, we should observe, understand and adapt to our surroundings and the factors that affect our experiences. Remember and cherish the good times that enrich our lives. Remember every person who has cared for us, helped us and loved us. Parents, teachers, friends and peers, all have an effect on who we are and what we do. Verbalize and demonstrate your appreciation of their gifts as a small token of gratitude for their kindness, wisdom and love. Practice your listening skills so that you may become an expert. Spread your compassion generously, and be stingy with advice. Walk a mile in their shoes, and feel every pebble along the way. Share the joy and heartache while you learn much about yourself.

Remember to forget the bad times, other than not to repeat them. Ditch the baggage, offload the anger and lighten your load. My mother always said, “Bitterness is the cancer of life.” Having wasted too much time feeling bitter myself, finally chucking those emotions has changed my perspective forever. Certainly we all face life challenges on a regular basis. Sometimes the path is clear; other times, not so clear. Remember to choose the best path, be strong and feel great satisfaction with your choice, even though it may be difficult. Stay the course and endure. We all wish to be remembered fondly. What we decide today will determine our legacy tomorrow. Choose wisely and take the time to decide, for the rewards are great. Lastly, remember to vote in the PCA/SBR election. Your voice counts, and we need your input. Please help us to be the best we can be. Thank you for your support.

What’s left to do, you ask? Where to next? That will be up to whoever steps up to volunteer as R.U.F. chair for 2017. John & Jeanne will be happy to show you the ropes, but we need a volunteer (or two) to keep this small but eager subgroup rolling.

The job of R.U.F. chair can be filled by one person, but it might be the perfect appointment for a couple (either related by marriage or not). In the past, R.U.F. has scheduled events on Thursdays at intervals dictated by the availability of interesting places to explore. In other words, monthly is not been mandatory. 20th Annual Chili Cook-Off

STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER

Sixty-two participants attended this year’s event, and the Middlebrooks’ circular driveway and auto court looked like a Porsche dealership with more than 30 gorgeous Porsches on display. Seven members brought pots of chili to be judged in the cook-off, and the other members contributed an array of appetizers, salads, breads and desserts to indulge in throughout the afternoon. The buffet line moved quickly thanks to the efficiency of our servers and to Carol Bishop Barber, who coordinated all the kitchen activities. After feasting on all the scrumptious food and tasting the different chili recipes, the members voted on their favorites. All attendees

served as judges, taking samples scooped from each separate pot and then evaluating and voting for their first, second and third preference. While the votecounting team, Claus and Iris Eisenbach, counted all the ballots, the rest of us sampled a tempting assortment of desserts and awaited the announcement of the winner of the much-coveted Lady Scoville Trophy. Terry explained how our trophy came into existence. In 1912, Wilbur Scoville devised a method called the Scoville Organoleptic Test, which rated the heat pungency of chili peppers. So in 2010, Jim and Terry modified a recycled tennis trophy to include some Porsche parts as well as adding a chili pot, apron and wooden spoon to the female figure that tops the wooden base. This became our first-place trophy for all future chili competitions and was designated the “Lady Scoville Trophy” to honor Wilbur Scoville for his valuable contribution to the art of chili making. Activities Chair Doreen Pankow announced the three winners of the cookoff and presented each with chili pepper kitchen towels and jars of chili peppers. Of course, the name of the first-place chef

will be added to the Lady Scoville Trophy. The outstanding chefs for 2016 are as follows: First Place, Becky Lundberg; Second Place, Jim Middlebrook; Third Place, Terry Middlebrook. Both Becky and Jim have been frequent winners in the top three chilies for quite a number of years. Once the prizes were presented to the winners, a special presentation was made to Jim and Terry Middlebrook to thank them for hosting this enjoyable event for the past ten years. Members who made SBR’s 20th annual Chili Cook-off an overwhelming success included our hosts, Terry and Jim Middlebrook, and the “Chief Chili Wrangler,” Carol Bishop Barber. Appreciation is also due to the following members who helped with canopies and table set-up, parking, kitchen set-up, serving and vote counting: Ted Lighthizer, Jeff Koskie, Jeff Parker, Stephen Barber, Kenny Brundrett, Bob Bassett, Carol Bishop Barber, Tara Brundrett, Terri Koskie, Lelia Lee, Becky Lundberg, Sue Kinsling, Jeanette Bassett, as well as Claus and Iris Eisenbach. Everyone had a relaxing, fun afternoon visiting with friends and new members and, once again, went home full of delicious food. =

or the tenth year in a row, Jim & Terry Middlebrook shared their lovely home to host one of the club’s most popular events, the annual chili cook-off. Bob & Jeanette Bassett hosted this friendly competition at their beautiful Camarillo home for the first ten years, from 1997 through 2006, and the Middlebrooks began hosting it in 2007. Their spacious home and patio overlooking the valley provide a delightful setting for eating outdoors and enjoying the company of fellow members.

he 40th Annual SBR Concours d’ Elegance returned to the lawn of the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort in Santa Barbara on October 9, 2016. This luxury hotel, just across Cabrillo Boulevard from the Pacific Ocean, made for a beautiful venue, allowing hotel visitors and the general public to be our guests at the greatest Porsche show of the season.

Jim Brown, our emcee for the day, welcomed everyone and announced what to expect throughout the event. In support of SBR’s designated charity for 2016, the Gold Coast Veterans Foundation, a 50/50 Raffle was held. Joining us were GCVF’s Executive Director J.C. Oberst, Executive VP Lisa Greenwood and Chairman of the Board Ron Greenwood. Our concours judges, led by Dick Douglass, included Alfred Abken, Kenny Brundrett, Bill Clevenger, Lori Cristo, Michael Dolphin, Carolyn Ewbank, Bob & Karen Lewis, Brett Mohr, Tom Trischler, Steve Vinning, Robert Watt, Pat & Betsy Wadman, Jeff Waxman and Dave & Linda Yerzley. They were assisted by Timers Beeber Clevenger, Mike Hodson and Lisa Watt. At 9:45 a.m., a brief meeting determined the judging teams, and at 10:00 a.m., the concours began. Concours participants from our region, Los Angeles Region, Grand Prix Region and Orange Coast Region waited anxiously for their cars to be judged, having seen the beautiful trophies which awaited the winners. Anita Banke, assisted by Carol Barber, Susan Stone and Sue Kinsling, expertly ran the Judging Table, insuring all the scores were tallied. A brief respite from the stress of being judged was an opportunity to enjoy the view of the ocean, catch up with good friends, meet new friends and admire the array of cars. The field included everything from a pristine 356 Speedster along with a rare and rustic four-cam 1960 356 Cab, to a modern 2016 Carrera GT3RS. We even had three 2016 Carrera GTS Club Coupes, part of a lim-

ited edition run of 60 cars commemorating PCA’s 60th Anniversary. The race for People’s Choice was tight with so many cars in the Display category to choose from and very competitive voting. The mood lifted when Jim Brown announced that lunch was ready. Inside the rotunda, the smell of the buffet wafted by, revealing the tantalizing treats that were waiting. It was a difficult decision -- which was better, the food or the view? I think both were exceptional. After lunch, the drawing for the 50/50 Raffle was held. Phyllis Weaver and Pamuela Hodson had solicited ticket sales throughout the day. The winner, Doreen Pankow, generously donated all of her winnings back to the Gold Coast Veterans Foundation. Mike Hodson, Santa Barbara President, thanked our sponsors including Walt Branscome and Santa Barbara Auto Group, Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort, DSW Audio for the sound system, and all the volunteers for making sure the event was a success. Some of the concours workers had been there since 6:00 a.m. The much-anticipated award presentation started with Kenny Brundrett announcing the Class Winners and their scores, while I had the joy of presenting the awards to each winner. Photos were taken while Anita Banke and Carol Barber distributed the scoring sheets and boxes for the trophies. The winner of the People’s Choice award was Russell Chang’s 2016 Carrera GT3RS. The parking team helped guide everyone off the lawn to enjoy the rest of their day. Once again, I’d like to thank all the volunteers, judges, sponsors and participants. Without all of you, this event could not have happened. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2017! =

The Tech Report to be parked in garages or driveways, away from the main dwellings where humans and their pets reside. The engine compartment of an automobile provides an ideal overnight nesting site because the engine stays relatively warm for hours after shutoff, and rodents will often occupy a vehicle overnight and then vacate it in the morning before the car is driven.

odents. Vermin. Varmints. Whatever one calls these small mammals of the order Rodentia (which is derived from the Latin verb rodere, or “to gnaw”), they can be pests that are capable of wreaking serious havoc on automobiles. One of the defining characteristics of a rodent is that the incisor teeth of both the upper and lower jaws grow quite rapidly. The only way to keep them from literally growing through the jaws and into the skull is to wear the teeth down by incessantly gnawing and chewing on things, including automobile wiring, insulation, and upholstery. Rodents such as mice and rats thrive amongst human populations because people provide an ample supply of food and shelter. To further exacerbate the issue, most rodents are capable of reproducing at an extremely fast rate; so a few mice can become a large colony in a matter of months. Furthermore, the current cycle of drought and wildfires throughout California has driven an increasing number of wild rodents to become more “domesticated” and seek refuge in and amongst human dwellings. Unfortunately, a favorite rodent hideaway happens to be inside automobiles because they offer a multitude of nooks and crannies for hiding and nesting. Cars tend AUSPUFF NOVEMBER 2O16

A favorite rodent nesting site is atop the flat-six engine of a Porsche 911. Mice and rats can squeeze into incredibly tight spaces, and they often access the top of an air-cooled 911 by crawling between the blades of the cooling fan. A large enough rodent nest on top of such an engine can impede airflow to the cylinder cooling fins. So if an older 911 comes into the shop with a complaint of high oil temperature readings, this is the first thing we check! For some time, it seems that rodents have an insatiable appetite for the wiring of vehicles of the Teutonic variety. While this could be a case of the rodents’ discriminating taste for fine automobiles, the main reason that rodents find our German-made conveyances so irresistible is the composition of the wiring insulation. In the 1990s, automakers were under increasing pressure from European Union regulators to construct their vehicles from more environmentally friendly and recyclable materials. One of the first measures enacted by Mercedes and Porsche was to use soy-based wiring insulation. It was not only more eco-friendly than the previous petroleum-based insulation, but it was also biodegradable. Sadly, some of this early soy-based wiring insulation proved to be a bit too biodegradable and wore away within a matter of years, causing various wiring shorts and other electrical maladies. The early (19951996) Porsche 993 engine wiring harness was particularly prone to insulation failures, which could cause all sorts of strange running issues that were difficult to pinpoint. So Porsche enacted a recall campaign to replace the engine wiring harness of affected vehicles free of charge. Despite the improved durability of subsequent wiring insulation compositions, they were still plant-based and very ap-

pealing to rodents. This wiring is not a food source for rodents, but it is a delicious way to keep their teeth sharpened and in check! More recently, American and Japanese automakers have followed suit. In addition to wiring insulation, automotive hoses and pipes are increasingly made of plant-based plastics, along with insulation and interior upholstery. Consequently, the Internet is awash with stories of vehicles that are completely taken over by colonies of rodents that devour wiring harness and other parts, often repeatedly and with expensive results.

If you live in a wooded area or have seen evidence of rodents at your home, it is wise to inspect your car’s engine compartment for signs of rodent presence, such as droppings or chewed wires and insulation. If any of these signs are present, the car should be immediately brought to a professional before costly damage occurs. Even if the vermin are eradicated and the obvious nests and droppings are cleared out, rodents have a very powerful sense of smell and will often return to a place where they have urinated, which is much more difficult for humans to locate and clean! At my shop, we see a fair amount of rodent damage, some of which can be costly to repair. The most common form of rodent damage is chewed wiring, which may cause a host of strange electrical issues, some of which are difficult to diagnose and locate. If a rodent chews though an exposed and accessible section of wiring, it can often be repaired with minimal labor and expense.

However, if an entire wiring harness is chewed though and/or is not easily accessible, the repair cost may dramatically increase. In the case of rear- and mid-engine Porsche sports cars, the engine needs to be removed or at least lowered to fully access and repair or replace the main engine wiring harness. If the worst-case scenario occurs and extensive rodent damage happens to your vehicle, your homeowners/ renters insurance (or your auto insurance) may cover the cost of repair, so check with your insurance agent. All of this begs the question of what can be done to prevent rodent infestation of your vehicle in the first place. Unfortu-

elsewhere. Perhaps the most persistent advice is to stuff dryer sheets throughout the vehicle because they supposedly emit a smell that repels rodents. While I cannot elaborate on the scientific reason for why this may or may not work, I will say that I have found in customer vehicles a number of rodent nests that were composed entirely of chewed-up dryer sheets. So that is proof enough that they are completely ineffective. As for other methods, I once lifted the hood of a customer’s car to find the entire engine compartment and cowl area liberally doused with paprika! Rodents had infiltrated the vehicle repeatedly, and the cus-

had gnawed right through the rodent tape and the affected wire. Of course, the reality of rodent infestation of customer vehicles raises the possibility of stowaways being brought into the shop, dead or alive. A frequent complaint of customers is that they smell the stench of a decomposing animal, and a lucky mechanic is given the grim task of locating and disposing of the deceased. We also have seen cases of critters meeting their demise in spectacularly gruesome ways, such as getting caught in engine drive belts and dash blower motors, which can cause expensive damage. There was also the recent incident of a live and uninjured rabbit being brought in aboard a BMW. Despite our attempts to guide it into a box, it escaped and eluded capture for almost a week. Your author went into the shop on a number of evenings and attempted to corner the bunny, and it took several organic Whole Foods salads before an effective trap was devised. The rabbit was unharmed and was released into a nearby creek.

Speaking of rodent deterrent methods, there are a number of urban legends and myths swirling around the Internet and

tomer swore by her method. I am not sure if this household spice-application strategy works, but it sure makes for an unpleasant working environment for a mechanic. One product that has actually proven to be somewhat effective is rodent-deterrent electrical tape offered by Honda. If a section of wiring is found that has been chewed by rodents, it is wrapped in the special tape in the hope that it will discourage any future gnawing. This tape is encapsulated with capsaicin, which is the chemical compound that makes chili peppers hot and spicy and causes irritation to rodents and other mammals (maybe the paprika lady was on to something!). The Honda anti-rodent tape has proven to work on a number of customer cars that had come into the shop for rodent damage again and again, but it is no silver bullet. We recently had a customer return with the same rodentrelated wiring damage that we repaired a month ago, and the determined creature

The rat was scared and attempted to scurry behind the engine; but because it was a rather large and healthy specimen, it got caught between the engine and firewall. The poor creature was visibly shaking with fear. Before we could devise a method of extraction, another customer walked up to check out the scene. As it turned out, he was a UCSB professor who performed numerous research experiments with lab animals. He calmly approached the vehicle, grabbed the rat, placed it in a shoebox and exited the premises! =

NOVEMBER 2O16 AUSPUFF DE R

nately, your humble scribe does not have any concrete answers or suggestions besides adopting a litter of feral cats to patrol your garage. Besides their teeth and claws, the presence of cat hair and dander is an effective rodent deterrent in many cases. While there are some effective countermeasures against rodents, the problem is that they are incredibly adaptive and resilient creatures, and some are quite canny at evading traps and other common deterrents. Besides consultation with a pestcontrol professional, my best single piece of advice to keep rodents from multiplying is to keep pet food (a favorite treat of varmints everywhere) in durable, sealed plastic containers at all times. If the pet food is kept in a bag, they will find it and tear right through the bag and then bring the food into your vehicle and take up residence!

I will end with my favorite rodent-related story from the shop. Several years ago, a customer with a mid-2000s Mini Cooper called and stated that her engine suddenly began to misfire and run very roughly as she was driving. She was a few blocks from the shop, so she limped the car into the parking lot. The hood was opened -and perched atop the engine’s valve cover was a large rat, actively gnawing away at a high-voltage spark plug wire. (The only reason it wasn’t electrocuted was that the plastic valve cover acted as an insulator!)
