T

olerance is an important component of a happy marriage and a happy life in general. Recently, we took a two-week road trip in our truck and tent trailer, aka the hillbilly motor home. Out of many wonderful days on the trip, one stood above the rest. On that morning, we visited an aviation museum where Pamuela listened to me blab endlessly about the aircraft on display. Fortunately, she has become a recent enthusiastic air show volunteer, maybe some of the motivation being “If you can’t beat them, join them.” She had located the museum and suggested our visit. Wow, what a gal.

MIKE HODSON

That afternoon found us in a botanical garden. As my primary role in our travels is planning the itinerary, some years ago I figured out that a schedule solely full of MY interests was not a wise idea. As I tell everyone, I may not be very bright, but I AM trainable. Looking through guidebooks (definitely old school, but it’s my preferred method) prior to our trip, making her interests as important as mine has worked well. Pamuela loved the garden, despite the rainy weather that cut our visit short. Her knowledge of plants and flowers is very impressive, and she enjoys sharing her enthusiasm. I know that I have chosen wisely when she wants to revisit one of our stops. Our tastes in food could hardly be more diverse. The caveman gene runs strongly in me, with proteins and carbohydrates favored in copious quantities, hopefully grilled with strong spices,

as my go-to menu. For her, light and healthy fare, mostly fruits and veggies, works the best. We meet somewhere in the middle, which is definitely beneficial for me, health-wise. She stays trim, and my ravenous appetite is satisfied. Seemingly, as we get older, our tolerance for the views of others diminishes. My attempts to personally mitigate this development have met with some success. Paradoxically, I find that I am most intolerant of the intolerance displayed by my fellow humans. Consensus is quite rare, regardless of the subject. These days, extreme polarization on every side results in unpleasantness. Emotions run at fever pitch, hostility is instantaneous, and the thin veneer of civility is quickly shed. Chances for a calm, rational discussion are slim at best, which I find very disappointing. Certainly, the stresses of modern life are contributing to this dismaying trend. Universal economic pressures are enormous, threatening core family groups. Competition is intense for employment, housing and education, natural resources are rapidly dwindling, and human suffering is rampant. Where do we go from here? Young people everywhere are witnessing this behavior on a regular basis. As role models for these impressionable generations, do we wish to perpetuate a culture of intolerance? At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, this country has survived more than 200 years of internal and external turbulence by valuing the concept of tolerance as a two-way street. My request is simple but not easy. Kindly tolerate and respect my opinions, beliefs, and values. I will do the same for you, although I may disagree with your opinions. Tolerance is the first step to compromise, which the world needs more of in huge doses. Continuing down our current path is simply not sustainable.

T

in the month, it was a group drive to visit Guadalupe Dunes and Oso Flaco Lake.

JANUARY saw a large group of SBR folks head south to explore San Diego’s Coronado Island. Staying at the quaint Glorietta Bay Hotel, we toured the nearby Hotel Del Coronado, took walking tours of Coronado and enjoyed a couple of delicious group meals at local restaurants.

JOHN ALFENITO

In FEBRUARY, the R.U.F. Group visited Rod Emory’s garage in North Hollywood. Emory Motorsports is where some of the most sought-after Porsche 356 Outlaws are created. It was a fascinating look behind the scenes. The region also sposored a tour of the beautiful collection at the Mullin Museum in Oxnard.

AUGUST brought the very popular Werks Reunion event in Monterey. And SBR revisited one its most popular activities in August, the Progressive Dinner, with the main course at Prime Steakhouse in Agoura Hills. In SEPTEMBER, a good number of SBR troops headed to Lake Tahoe for PCA’s Treffen. Home-based in The Resort at Squaw Creek, this year’s Treffen was well-organized and a lot of fun. A pre-concours Detail Clinic was held at Lavaggio in September, and the 20th Anniversary Chili Cook-Off returned to Jim & Terry Middlebrook’s home. Photo by John Alfenito

he calendar pages are changing at an impressive clip as another fun year comes to a close. Our region was full of activity in 2016, and that’s over and above our 24 monthly breakfast get-togethers!

Rusnak Porsche was kind enough to put on a complimentary service clinic for our members in MARCH. Then, it was time for our Backroads Drive to B.J.’s Brewhouse in Valencia.

The month of APRIL was jam-packed. First was the Zone 8 Festival of Speed, followed by the Long Beach Grand Prix. Then we had our first autocross of the year in Camarillo. Finally, the always-popular Gimmick Rally finished off the month.

OCTOBER means concours, and this year marked SBR’s 40th annual event. Returning to the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort in Santa Barbara made for a wonderful show this year. A week later, we were off to Paso Robles for the Wine Country Harvest Tour. NOVEMBER roared in with our second Camarillo Autocross of the year followed by a trip to the Petersen Museum in West Los Angeles. Coming up this month will be Motor4Toys in Woodland Hills and our very popular SBR Holiday Brunch, once again this year at Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo. This club is busy, and the list of activities offers something for everyone. Make it a point to join your fellow Santa Barbara Region friends in the coming year as we present another full slate of fun things to do - together. Happy New Year! Photo by John Alfenito

In MAY, one of the most photographed events of the year took place at the Commemorative Air Force Museum at the Camarillo Airport. Porsche & Propellors brought together beautiful cars and vintage aircraft with results as expected - spectacular! Then for Memorial Day Weekend, it was off to the San Francisco Bay Area for a long weekend of sightseeing and fun. Although not many SBR members made the trek to Jay Peak, Vermont for PCA’s Porsche Parade in JUNE, a large number of new and veteran club members came together for the New Member/Legacy Member Picnic. The Fourth of JULY always finds several SBR cars in the City of Santa Barbara’s official holiday parade down State Street. Later

STORY & PHOTOS BY MIKE HODSON

aughter Julie has always loved the Audi R8, so much so that she had a poster of it on her bedroom wall. When she found out one could be rented for track time in Las Vegas, the die was cast. During her USAF leave between Alaskan and Italian duty stations, the plan was to meet with friends in Vegas for some serious R & R. Always trying to be “the good dad,” I offered to join her. Reservations were made, accommodations were arranged, and away we went. Arriving at the Exotics Racing facility adjacent to the Las Vegas Speedway, our excitement continued to build. Poor Julie was too nervous to eat her lunch. We were welcomed and checked in by the very professional staff, and then it was off to the pits to sit in and photograph every possible car. Next up was the drivers’ meeting explaining the dos and don’ts, plus the obligatory pump video to crank up the adrenaline. Track orientation laps were in a base model Cayenne. The instructor mentioned that his fourth fastest lap time was in the Cayenne as compared to all the exotics. Wow. Due mostly to brand familiarity, I had chosen the Porsche GT3 for my first eight laps. Approaching the machine was like seeing a (very) attractive career woman in a business suit. Serious, sensible, superbly capable, understated (relatively) and intelligent, the uber-refined 911 contains nothing that is non-essential. Climbing in felt comfortable, reassuring and, at the same time, exhilarating with the knowledge of what was to come.

After a short break, it was Ferrari time. Screaming yellow, the 458 Italia was everything an exotic should be: sensationally gorgeous, very expensive, high maintenance, temperamental, high strung, difficult to please -- but with a marvelous soundtrack. Like a supermodel in a slinky evening gown, the 458 is impossible to ignore and demands attention. Your brain says no, but your heart doesn’t care. The relationship might be difficult and painful, but the potential rewards could be worth the cost. Driving the Ferrari was challenging, punishing my every mistake with squealing tires. Huge horsepower requires delicate throttle inputs, and with sensory overload happening quite often, it is easy to get behind the car, resulting in more embarrassment. Once again, the 4-1-4 lap sequence was over WAY too quickly. Julie loved her time in the R8. Still her dream car, she could not say enough good things about the car, her instructor and the overall experience. Later on that day when my blood pressure, breathing and adrenaline levels had somewhat returned to normal, I realized a transformation had occurred. The legacy of Ferrari is unmatched in motor racing; however, the passion of ownership and driving experience was lost on me prior to the hot laps. Intoxicating and addicting, the 458 changed my perspective forever. I get it now. Thank you, Julie, for sharing my automotive enthusiasm. And thank you for giving me a good reason to have one of the best days of my life, especially sharing it with you. =

DECEMBER 2O16 AUSPUFF DE R

I Get It Now D

Onto the track we went, with the instructor calmly and patiently guiding me around the track, helping me with shift points, braking and apex carving. Each lap of the 1.2-mile, seven-turn circuit takes approximately one minute, so the first four laps literally flew by. One cool-down lap, both for the car and my brain, was welcome. Four very quick laps later, we pulled into the pits. My impression of the GT3 was very positive due to its unflappable character. Undoubtedly helped by the handling nannies, the car felt very stable and planted throughout the course, even over the sections where elevation changes affected the suspension balance. With the mantra “smooth is fast” firmly planted in my psyche, the Porsche inspires confidence. It gives back a lot, and it lets you feel more skillful than you actually might be.

ur tour began on a beautiful Saturday morning in October with delicious breakfast goodies and beverages, courtesy of the Santa Barbara Auto Group, our event sponsor. Members signed in with Membership Chair Doreen Pankow and were greeted by Beverly Brovsky, who gave out tour packets with driving directions, information about the wineries we would visit, a wine country map, and brochures from the Paso Robles Inn and surrounding attractions. Upon departing, we headed up San Marcos Pass, enjoying the beautiful views of Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz Island on our way to the old stagecoach trail, Foxen Canyon Road. After a peaceful drive through ranch lands, scenic vineyards and dazzling countryside, we turned onto a little-known back road called Palmer Lane, where hillside vines of golden fall colors led us to Route 101.

A brisk highway journey north revealed a very different landscape, soaring vistas opening to ocean panoramas off Pismo Beach. At Vineyard Drive, we entered the gateway to the back roads of the Paso Robles wine country and our first destination, Adelaida Winery, a family-owned and operated winery that was named after a 19thcentury settlement in the mountains of west Paso Robles. The winery is located on a 2300foot hilltop marking the highest elevation in Paso Robles and offering spectacular views of the Santa Lucia Mountains. We all gathered in the new barrel room to enjoy a special catered winemaker’s lunch, hear about the winery’s history and, as a special treat, meet the rather reclusive winemaker. We enjoyed many award-winning wines until it was time to depart to the quaint town of Paso Robles and our destination hotel, The Paso Robles Inn. AUSPUFF DECEMBER 2O16

Dinner at the Paso Robles Inn

In the afternoon, many of us enjoyed the lush hotel grounds with its Koi ponds and explored nearby boutiques, antique stores and bistros. We all gathered at 6:30 for wine, cocktails, appetizers and socializing before entering the festive historic ballroom for a specially prepared harvest buffet. Following dinner, Nick Liakas thanked Michael & Beverly Brovsky for sponsoring the event and providing the wine. Michael welcomed everyone, expressed appreciation for attending the event and talked about our Sunday adventure. Beverly thanked Walt Branscome and the Santa Barbara Auto Group, who had provided two new Porsche models, a white 911S and silver 718 Boxster, to test drive during the weekend. Walt also gave everyone a distinctive Porsche engraved wine glass as a remembrance of the event. On Sunday morning after breakfast, we journeyed on a picturesque back road from the hotel to a most unusual and remote winery in the hills of the scenic Linne Valley. Sculpterra Winery was a sight to behold, with landscaped gardens containing enormous sculptures by renowned artists such as John Jagger, whose monuments grace many cities in the US and abroad. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the sculptures, artwork and garden panels as well as the fabulous wines. Kyle, the general manager, told the story of the extraordinary founding of the winery and the origination of the sculptures. In addition to the many acres of grapes, the winery is also known for its 30 acres of estate-grown pistachios. All members left with a gift bag of pistachios provided by Michael & Beverly. With wonderful memories of a fun-filled weekend, members departed to enjoy the sunny Sunday afternoon. We appreciate the calls, texts and notes of thanks we have received. Cheers! =

Paso Robles is halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and was known to the Indians as the “Hot Springs,” where many journeyed to experience the healing powers of the spring’s sulphur waters. The original hotel was completed in 1891. However, a fire in 1940 destroyed all but the ballroom. The hotel was rebuilt utilizing some of the bricks salvaged from the fire and was later totally renovated by the current owners.

STORY BY GLENN CRAWFORD

T

he Santa Barbara Region’s second Autocross of the year was held on Saturday, November 5, 2016. First, thank you to our PCA sponsors: Rusnak Porsche and Schneider Autohaus, and new advertiser, Pirelli. Second, I’d like to officially express appreciation to all of our volunteers who drove in from all over California. There are too many to mention here, but you know who you are. Without our wonderful sponsors and volunteers, great events and activities like this couldn’t be done. The volunteer team officially started the track setup at the Camarillo Airport Friday afternoon at 2 PM; and by 4 PM, we had a fun, drivable track. Saturday, the team started up again at 6 AM when even more volunteers started helping out at the Entry Gate, Tech Inspection, Grid, Set-up and Timing. The process reminded me of a big family at Thanksgiving with

everybody pitching in to get it done, all with a happy buzz in the air. As the sun rose, cars got tech’d and gridded. On this beautiful, sunny morning with a slight breeze, drivers did leisurely track walks to become more familiar with our challenging 3/4-mile track. The drivers meeting took place at about 8:30, and the first car was out around 9 AM. An interesting and fantastic difference with this Autocross was that about a quarter of the drivers were first-timers! Each one of them was assigned a volunteer instructor for their right seat to make sure they were safe and had fun. Feedback leads me to believe that it worked very successfully. As the morning started, the Blue, Green, Red and Yellow groups of 12 cars each made three practice laps; then Blue and Green made two more practice runs before lunch break.

The barbecue was great, as always, which by itself was worth the long drive, according to many. After the lunch break, things became more serious. Due to time constraints, we decided to have Red and Yellow do their two additional practice laps, directly followed by three timed runs. All day long, the timing was our Achilles Heel. But due to Herculean efforts by the timing crew, we were able to get timed runs done for all, and the Autocross was saved. By 4 PM, all drivers had been able to make their allotted runs, and everyone relaxed. Then we witnessed an amazing transformation. Everybody pitched in and picked up cones spread over a quarter mile as well as tables, easy-ups, chairs and a generator. All our gear was stuffed in our trailer, and we were gone – all accomplished in less than 30 minutes! Success. =

The R.U.F. Report

The Port of

Hueneme STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS

The port’s motto is “We make cargo move.” About $9 billion in goods each year generates $16.5 million in income. The port provides over 2500 trade-related jobs, and over 1200 of their employees live in Oxnard and Port Hueneme. Because of its proximity to the Santa Barbara Channel, it is a primary support facility for the offshore oil industry. On Thursday morning October 20, 14 R.U.F. (Retired & Unemployed Folks) members had the opportunity to tour the Port of Hueneme. Will Berg, Director of Mar-

Will Berg, Director of Marketing & Public Information Officer

keting & Public Information Officer, told us the history of the port and provided lots of interesting facts about their business. We learned about the intricacies of a working port, the differences in size and function of ships vs. boats and the specialized language of shipping such as “break-bulk,” ”containerized,” “liquid bulk,” “bulk” and “Ro-Ro cargos.” The Oxnard Harbor District owns and operates the Port of Hueneme, which has five deep water berths. The main channel depth is 35 feet, and five to six ships at a time can be docked. They handle 50,000 to 70,000 containers a year. Sunkist also maintains a refrigerated storage building onsite. As a shared port between the Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) and the Oxnard Harbor District, the U.S. Navy has over 4,500 feet (1,400 m) of berthing space for various ship platforms for use by tenant commands of NBVC. The port has a direct highway connection to the nationwide freight network, which raises the status of the port and

gives it access to more federal funding, resulting in a competitive advantage. The port also owns over 13 miles of the railroad line, which facilitates the movement of cargo. Loaded train cars travel into Oxnard before Union Pacific takes them over. After his talk, Will Berg drove us in a large van throughout the facility to see workers and equipment in action. He explained how they move various types of cargo and pointed out what was happening currently on the docks. In the course of this tour, Nick Liakas, our photographer, got out of the van several times to take pictures. As he was taking photos of some navy ships, the Harbor Patrol drove up and spoke to Nick. After three or four minutes, they finally let Nick return to our van. We then found out that he had to delete the photos of the navy ships in the interest of security. At the end of our tour, our group went to Yolanda’s Mexican Café for lunch where we enjoyed visiting with friends and talking about our fascinating morning. =

The red ship (on the left) was unloading over one million Chiquita Bananas. The blue ship had just brought in 6000 BMWs and MINIs.

T

he Port of Hueneme is the only deep water harbor between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. It serves international businesses and ocean carriers from the Pacific Rim and Europe. This facility ranks among the top seaports in California for general cargo processing, and it serves a niche market for the import and export of automobiles, fresh fruit and produce. Automobiles make up 60% of its revenue, and bananas constitute 42% of its cargo.

Also present was Don Dickey. The following reports and discussions were presented:

Secretary: The September 2016 bi-monthly board meeting minutes taken by Howard Rubenstein were approved as submitted. Vice President: No report. Treasurer: The Income and Expense report indicates that the Advertising line is a negative amount due to reclassifying $5,000 from Advertising to Concours Sponsorship. The cash balance is growing at a good pace, although less than last year. Jim Brown reported on the following Financial Statements for October 2016: (1) Income & Expense Previous Year Comparison October 2016, (2) Income & Expense Previous Year Comparison January through October 2016, (3) Statement of Cash Flows January through October 2016, (4) Income & Expense January through October 2016, (5) Balance Sheet Previous Year Comparison October 2016.

Distribution: On October 25, 2016, 774 copies of the November Der Auspuff issues were mailed at a postage cost of $360.31. The balance in the Post Office account is $343.80, which will not cover the next December issue mailing. Joan Yabitsu requested that the Board approve additional funding to build up the reserve account at the Thousand Oaks post office. She suggested a monthly budget of at least $370. A motion was made and approved for a check in the amount of $1,200.00 for postage for the next three months mailing of Der Auspuff . Advertising: One new client was added this month and no clients cancelled. There are six outstanding invoices from last month with no overdue invoices.

Goodie Store: No report. Insurance: All certificates for all driving events through the year-end have been received. No COI for the SBR Annual Holiday Brunch is required as it is not a driving event.

Concours: Tara and Kenny Brundrett reported that this year’s Concours was very close to a break-even. Mike Hodson proposed having the Concours every other year and the majority of the Board wish to continue it annually in the month of October. There was a discussion regarding a different location in order to mitigate costs, therefore the Co-Chairpersons will investigate different sites. It was decided to eliminate MotorsportReg for Concours registration in the future, due to the perceived intrusive nature of the site.

Autocross: Glenn Crawford reported that fifty-one people registered for November’s Autocross and there were forty-eight cars. A motion was made and approved to purchase six helmets and fifty cones. Also, it was suggested that we rent some helmets for the next Autocross.
