Fresh Start
B
elieve it or not, ladies and gentlemen, it is already 2017. Wasn’t the great Y2K scare, where Chicken Little was rushing about predicting the end of the computing world or worse, just a few years ago? As time goes by, the years seem to go by faster, something to do with the relatively smaller life percentage each year represents as we grow more experienced. Whatever the explanation, rationalization or perception, time continues to fly by, which at the end of the day for me is a good thing.
MIKE HODSON
These days, the luxury of being able to fill my task plate as full as I wish is suiting me perfectly. “Living the dream” is my current reality, instead of some fantasy that may or may not have ever been achieved. Hard work, dedication, and most importantly selecting the right life partner in Pamuela have given our family the luxury of time. During my working years, the plate was always overflowing, with time and energy and emotion allocated to what I thought were the most critical items. Stress, pressure and responsibility can severely warp perceptions, and many times those important family tasks got de-prioritized until “later,” which often turned into “never.” Now that time and scheduling are much more my own to manage, backsliding and worn-out arguments for procrastination are more difficult to explain and justify. Time- honored OCD patterns continue to emerge, and repetitive behaviors continue on a common basis. Rote still conveniently takes the place of fresh analysis.
For 2017, my biggest challenge will be trying not to travel the well-worn, easy paths of precedence. In some instances, especially in the airplane, improvisation, creativity and freethinking can be deadly. Sticking with tried and true methods while staying the course will probably save lives. Most subjects, however, readily accept new ideas and approaches. Unimaginable changes have transformed our lives in the last six years. Our children have blossomed into independence, allowing us freedom, security and flexibility that we never dreamed of enjoying. Thinking, planning and acting on this new reality is prodding me (hopefully) to view the future through an entirely different lens. No longer should the primary thought process be what I can do to improve the quality of life for the entire family, but rather what can I do to improve the quality of life for us as a couple. As I spoke about last month, tolerance is key, not only in words but, more importantly, in actions. For more than 30 years, Pamuela has been a good sport and supporter of my interests. Frankly, I have not done a wonderful job of reciprocating. Time to dig myself out of the rut, think outside my own little box and take care of my nearest and dearest, whom I love with all my heart. Making a New Year’s resolution always begins with the best intentions; however, the challenge is to implement the resolution consistently throughout the year after the initial euphoria fades. Best wishes to everyone in the Santa Barbara Region for a happy and healthy 2017. May we all be strong in making our resolutions stick.

appy New Year! This issue of Der Auspuff is packed with interesting stories and excellent photography, as once again, our members step up to provide great coverage of the region’s activities.
Keeping my pre-Thanksgiving tradition alive, I traveled to downtown Los Angeles in November to visit the L.A. International Auto Show at the Convention Center. The Porsche display in Petree Hall was slightly subdued this time with most models displayed in silvers, greys, whites and black. By the time I spotted the new, mid-engined RSR in full race regalia, I was ready for

some color! As you can see (on this month’s cover), it did not disappoint. And the concept of a mid-engine 911 is intriguing. Now that the election is over - no, not that one, I mean SBR’s election - our region heads into 2017 with a clear purpose and strong leadership to carry it out. A third term for President Mike Hodson and a new Activities Chair in Don Dickey guarantee that this will be a fun year in SBR. I hope you’ll check the upcoming events calendar(s) (page 3 & page 26) and make your plans to join your fellow club members on a drive, a breakfast, or some other activity that catches your interest. Let’s make this coming year another great one for SBR!

Meeting time is 8:00 a.m. at Rusnak/Westlake Porsche, 3839 Auto Mall Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, where we’ll be offered complimentary coffee and pastries. Our drive will take us on some roads just made for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of fun driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here. Only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. The top three teams, as determined by the highest number of correct answers, will be our winners and receive prizes. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not in a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen may come in handy, too. The rally will end at Dos Vientos Center in Newbury Park. There, we’ll be treated to a great barbecue lunch from Q-Time BBQ. The total cost is $30 per person, including lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee. This is always a popular event, so don’t be left out. unday morning, December 11, dawned damp and dreary, not the best scenario for the Holiday Brunch. Fortunately, the overcast quickly opened up, and by the time our members and guests began arriving, the sun was shining. Just another day in paradise, as they say. There were so many compliments from the year before, the beautiful and picturesque Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo was chosen once again for the site of our annual Holiday Brunch. Spanish Hills was able to offer one room large enough to accommodate the enthusiastic crowd of 100 Porsche fans. Keeping with tradition, each guest brought an unwrapped toy for donation to the Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara. Special thanks go to Jeff Waxman for delivering those toys to the Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara. As always, the atmosphere was festive and inviting, and folks were dressed up in their holiday finery. New members and legacy members exchanged warm greetings in anticipation of the meal to be consumed and the program to be enjoyed. A short welcome speech was presented, and then off to the buffet line we went!

Seven past SBR presidents were recognized and given appreciation for their service and dedication to the Region, as were the members on the Board of Directors for 2016. Retiring Activities Chair Doreen Pankow was thanked for the outstanding events she produced for the year, and individuals who coordinated specific activities throughout 2016 were also mentioned for their hard work. Every year, members choose Man of the Year and Woman of the Year, their names being placed onto perpetual trophies. I was humbled to join the list of past honorees. It is, indeed, special company to be amongst. Doreen Pankow once again was praised for her service to the club, a well-deserved award. The business portion of the meeting concluded with the instal-

ighty members and guests made the journey into Los Angeles to visit the Petersen Automotive Museum (The Pete), which recently completed a $125 million makeover, both inside and outside. The outside facade has been covered in ribbons of red-trimmed stainless steel, giving the building a sense of speed in motion. It’s one of Los Angeles’ unique architectural accomplishments. The Petersen Museum was founded in 1994 by Robert Petersen when he sold his publishing empire and channeled his passion into a new venture, an automobile museum. As a point of interest, Petersen started his career with one magazine, Hot Rod, and expanded that into many very successful magazines, some of which are still being published. The purpose of the museum is to present and explore the history of the automobile and its impact on American life and culture using Los Angeles as a prime example. Automobile Magazine has recognized The Pete as “One of the greatest car museums in the U.S., if not the world.” Many of us in attendance would agree with that observation. Not only did we see some very interesting and beautiful automobiles, including one-of-a-kind vehicles, the presentations were spectacular. In addition, there was a race simulator for those who dared to “drive” on one of 18 international racetracks. The museum is a toy haven for all of us car enthusiasts and an education for any history buff. Two docent-led tours were arranged for our group. The first was an overview of the museum’s three floors, covering 100,000 square feet of car nirvana. The first-floor features “The Art of Bugatti,” presenting the art and history of the famous Bugatti family, including their cars, furniture and art pieces. The featured car was a 57G Bugatti, which was one of the most artfully designed vehicles ever built. The highlight for many was the $2.6 million Chiron Bugatti, which was on loan from the parent company, Volkswagen. The second floor, known as the Industry Floor, explores the diversity of automotive design and technology. Here is where we saw cars designed for speed and those designed for efficiency. There was also an Art Center College of Design studio where students do design projects. On this floor also AUSPUFF JANUARY 2O17

were high performance road cars, hot rods and customs, motorcycles and race cars, including a Porsche 935K3, 914/6, 917K, 936/80 and a 962. In the Bruce Meyer Gallery, there was a 1957 Porsche 356A and a 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS. Another section on this floor displayed alternate technology vehicles such as natural gas, hybrid, electric and fuel cell. The third floor, called the History Floor, covers the history of the automobile and our love for it, starting with a replica of the 1886 Benz Motorwagen and how Hollywood embraced the auto. The following is a list of cars associated with movies and/ or movie stars:
Lightning McQueen for Disney/Pixar film, Cars
1956 Jaguar XKSS
once owned by Steve McQueen
1964 Aston Martin DB5
from James Bond film, Skyfall
2011 Ford Fiesta
from Ken Block’s Gymkhana 3
2004 Pontiac Aztek from Breaking Bad
1992 Batmobile
from Batman Returns
Ferrari 308 GTS from Magnum P.I.
De Tomaso Pantera formerly owned by Elvis Presley Following our lunch break, we started our Vault tour, which until recently was off limits to the public. The docent-led, 90-minute tour of the museum’s legendary storage vault below the museum featured over 100 vehicles, some of which have rarely been seen by the public. Examples include the spectacular, one-of-one 1925/34 “Round Door” Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe; a Ferrari given to Henry Ford II by Enzo Ferrari; a Mercedes used by Saddam Hussein; and a 1939 Bugatti given to the Shah of Iran as a wedding present. A wide variety of hot rods, muscle cars, Hollywood vehicles, exotics, vehicles used by heads of state, motorcycles and even a Popemobile were seen on the tour. Unfortunatly, no photos were allowed during our Vault visit. Following the tour, we were free to explore the museum on our own, with many of us going back to the racing simulator where we could drive various racecars on the track of our choice. A full and fun day was had by all. = DE R

Race Weekend Monterey Pirelli World Challenge Final Round for 2016
STORY & PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca hosted this year’s final round of races on its famous 2.33-mile, 11-turn road course, arguably one of the best racetracks in North America. I arrived at the track by 11 am on Friday just in time to watch the GTS cars practice. The on-track action never seemed to stop until the last race of the weekend, a Sprint X race at 4 pm on Sunday. Fans were allowed to park on the “Island,” which made access great, but there were no vendors this year to tempt you with their products or services. Your ticket price includes pit access and allows you to attend the Pre-Race and March to the Grid for all series races on both Saturday and Sunday, a real treat for the fans. On Saturday, fans were treated to an autograph session with all the drivers from all nine race groups. As a long-time race fan of Porsche, I was most interested in how the 22 Porsches scattered throughout the field of 122 would
fare on this last race weekend of the season. Coming into the final round, Alec Udell won the GT Cup Drivers Championship at Sonoma. But the Drivers Championships for GT, GTA, TC, TCA, TCB, GTS and Sprint X would not be awarded until the last race of the weekend. Here are the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge Drivers Championships for each class:
GT: Alvaro Parente, car 9, McLaren 650S GT3 GTA: Martin Fuentes, car 07, Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 GT Cup: Alec Udell, car 17, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup GTS: Brett Sandberg, car 13, KTM X-Bow GT4 TC: Toby Grahovec, car 26, BMW 235iR TCA: Elivan Goulart, car 70, Mazda MX-5 Cup TCB: Tom O’Gorman, car 94, Honda Fit Sprint X GT: Don Von Moltke, car 23, Audi R8 LMS Ultra Sprint X GTS: Kris Wilson, car 07, Aston Martin Vantage GT4 The 22 cars from Stuttgart, Germany, didn’t do as well as I hoped in the Pirelli World Challenge Drivers’ Championship for 2016, but there’s always next year. I did enjoy the wide mix of cars making up the nine classes, and the on-track racing is as exciting as it gets. One bright spot for Porsche, they did finish second in both the GT Drivers’ and Manufactures’ Championships for 2016, thanks to Patrick Long and Wright Motorsports. Well done, all you Porsche racers. We hope to see you back in 2017 for an even more successful season for you and Porsche. =

he Pirelli World Challenge is managed by WC Vision and is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). The World Challenge series is now in its 26th year of racing and consists of seven driver classifications and nine classes of vehicles: Grand Touring (GT), GTA, GT Cup, GTS, Touring Car (TC), TCA, TCB, Sprint X GT and Sprint X GTS. The races, for the most part, are 40- to 50-minute sprint races with no pit stops except in the Sprint X series races where a driver and tire changes are mandatory during the race. One hundred twenty-two cars made the entry list for this final race weekend of the Pirelli World Challenge for 2016.

PIRELLI P ZERO WORLD STORY BY MIKE HODSON EVENT PHOTOS BY DON DICKEY
T
he last Formula 1 (F1) race of 2016 was scheduled for November 27, the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. The Driver’s World Championship was on the line, with points leaders and teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg set to do battle. PCA-SBR’s newest advertiser, Pirelli P Zero World, graciously invited club members to their gorgeous facility in Century City to view the race. About 40 racing fans accepted the invitation and braced for the holiday weekend traffic, which was mercifully light, leaving more time for socializing and enjoying the hospitality. P Zero World staff members, including Claus Ettensberger and Kevin Hinton, put together a first-class event including many exotic autos in the showroom with Lamborghinis, Aston-Martins, Mercedes and even an F1 car. Delectable refreshments and snacks were in abundance, as were helpful gentlemen and lovely ladies. SBR Member Frank Ramirez brought raffle prizes from his employer (and F1 team sponsor), Haas Automation. Many of the items were signed by Haas F1 team drivers, making the prizes unique. The competition for these was quite spirited with both cheering and groaning as each winner was announced. After 55 laps, Lewis Hamilton won the race; however, Nico Rosberg (son of former World Champion Keke Rosberg) finished second and won the Driver’s World Championship for 2016 with 385 total points. The margin of victory was only five points for the entire season. Of course, large quantities of champagne were sprayed on the podium finishers after the “de rigueur” burnout/donuts by the winner. Sadly, legend Jenson Button (McLaren) had suspension damage and was forced to retire on Lap 12 of his final F1 race. The race was over, the season was over, and the event was over. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time, with kudos to the P Zero World crew for all their hard work. We look forward to future events at this new venue and to developing a mutually successful relationship with the folks at Pirelli. Special thanks go out to Frank Ramirez and the Haas Automation team. Your generosity is appreciated. = DE R
