GIMMICK RALLY Saturday, April 29, 2017
Meeting time is 8:00 a.m. at Rusnak/Westlake Porsche, 3839 Auto Mall Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, where we’ll be offered complimentary coffee and pastries. Our drive will take us on some roads just made for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of fun driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here. Only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. The top three teams, as determined by the highest number of correct answers, will be our winners and receive prizes. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not in a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen may come in handy, too. The rally will end at Dos Vientos Center in Newbury Park. There, we’ll be treated to a great barbecue lunch from Q-Time BBQ. The total cost is $30 per person, including lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee. This is always a popular event, so don’t be left out. Please R.S.V.P. by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check.

Wants And Needs
I
n our journey through life, it can be easy to confuse our wants and our needs. Basic human needs, such as food, shelter and clothing, are pretty much inviolate. What can happen is that our wants, especially if the want is a goal, may potentially be achieved with some “thing.” As an example, most golfers want to lower their handicaps. Accomplishing this goal may take the form of new equipment, lessons or simply more practice. It is quite easy to convince ourselves that those ten-year-old golf clubs are hindering our performance. Soon the “need” for new clubs is rationalized, at least in our own minds, even though the chances are good that the same amount of money spent on golf lessons would probably be a better choice.
MIKE HODSON
We in the Porsche universe -- and for that matter, any automotive enthusiast group -- travel down the same path of thinking. My personal story begins with my complete satisfaction as the owner of a 1969 911T Targa for 23 years -- or so I thought. Completely oblivious about PCA (and many other things, as Pamuela will confirm), the Targa fully met my wants and needs and expectations as a sports car that was fun to drive, fun to look at and, mostly, fun to own. Then one fateful day, a red 1989 930 Turbo drove down my street into a neighbor’s garage. Of course, I had to make a friendly visit. And before long, I was driving the machine, having the time of my life.
Ever since the 930 series was introduced in 1976, I’d been smitten. The Road & Track magazine review was posted on my bedroom wall for many years, the object of much lust. Then 25 years later, the fantasy finally became reality, and there was no turning back. Fortunately, Pamuela was very supportive of my obsession, and in a short time, there was a blue 930 in my garage. Wanting a 930 had gone from a low-priority dream to a high-priority task. Did I need a 930? No and heck no. However, I was fairly certain that a 930 would give me long-term happiness and satisfaction. Sixteen years later, I am still smitten and love that car more than any other “thing” I own. All of us have our want lists, which may include a remodeled kitchen, a beautiful sailboat or a new Porsche. We work hard to achieve our goals, both personal and professional. Huge amounts of time, energy and emotion are expended over many years to get where we want to go. Sometimes we make it, sometimes not. Hopefully, at the end of the day, we are able to be satisfied with our lot in life. As members of the Porsche Club, our lives are incredibly fortunate. Our legitimate needs are few, if any, for which we must be very thankful. Pursuing our wants can be the icing on the cake; but hopefully, that will never become the primary driver of our happiness or contentment. Knowing the difference between wants and needs helps to keep our lives in balance.
The R.U.F. Group in 2017
T
he R.U.F. Group (Retired and Unemployed Folks), is a social group within the Santa Barbara Region. R.U.F. takes field trips to places of interest along the South Coast once every other month, usually on the third Thursday. Examples of recent field trips include meeting Rod Emory and touring Emory Motorsports in North Hollywood and a walking tour of historic downtown Los Angeles followed by lunch at Clifton’s Cafeteria. Rem and Sally Laan recently took over leadership of R.U.F. from John and Jeanne McNair, who ably led the group for 5 years. R.U.F. currently has about 130 members on its mailing list. However, about 30 people typically attend an event, so it is a great opportunity to make new friends in the club. If you would like to be added to the mailing list or have ideas for future field trips, please email Rem Laan at Remmert.Laan@gmail.com.

T
he rains finally came to Southern California, but they stopped for three beautiful, sunny days so that the Santa Barbara Region of the Porsche Club could enjoy a trip to Quail Lodge in Carmel-by-theSea for the Martin Luther King, Jr., weekend.
While our route had to be changed due to mudslides on Highway 1 north of Ragged Point, we were still fortunate to be able to admire some of the scenic coastal views and make the Ragged Point Inn our lunch destination. The Friday night dinner took place at the Quail Lodge, and everyone was anticipating a fun-filled weekend. Barbara and Jim Spencer, the weekend coordinators, welcomed all participants to the event and gave an overview of the planned activities. On Saturday morning, we took a beautiful drive up Highway 1 to the Canepa auto museum. This is an automotive Nirvana in a 70,000square-foot facility set in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in the town of Scotts Valley. We toured the museum with John Ficarra, Canepa’s marketing director. Although many of the club members have toured car museums in the past, we all agreed that John’s tour provided us with the most passionate, knowledgeable and interesting tour we had ever experienced. He even received an ovation for his expertise. This is a showroom brimming with the world’s finest cars alongside a complete on-premise restoration facility, a workshop dedicated to the support of historic racecars and an innovative custom vehicle design house. The vibrant motorsports museum features the greatest motorized heroes of yesteryear. Two of the most famous and valuable cars in the collection include the Ferrari 21 (worth $70 million), which was the first car to win a 24-hour race on American tires; and the Gulf Porsche 917K that dominated 24hour racing during 1971 and 1972, winning LeMans, Daytona and Sebring by large margins After the tour, we had a fabulous chicken and ribs barbecue while sitting in the car restoration area among $150 million worth of cars. Not too shabby! Saturday afternoon and evening were free for members to explore nearby boutiques and antique stores, play golf, visit wineries, take historic tours of Carmel or luxuriate in spas. When Sunday morning arrived, we caravanned to the famous 17-Mile Drive and took in magnificent vista points such as the Lone Cypress, the Restless Sea and world-famous golf courses. The highlight of the weekend was our delightful lunch at Stillwater Grill at the Pebble Beach Lodge with a spectacular view of the 18th hole. NFL playoff games occupied some of the members’ afternoon, but watching the games at the famous Pebble Beach Tap Room made it all the more special. Others enjoyed just relaxing at the beautiful resort. Watching 100 quail running around the golf course and jumping into the pond was a hoot! Who knew that quail could swim! Sunday night’s dinner was at Il Fornaio in Carmel where friendships continued to be nurtured and stories shared. Thank you to everyone who attended this outstanding Porsche event that made some wonderful memories for all. = DE R

SBR Heads to Mammoth for Memorial Day Weekend Friday, May 26
Saturday, May 27
The group will rendezvous at The Plaza at Golden Valley Rd., Santa Clarita, CA, at 8:30 a.m., Friday, May 26, for prompt departure at 9:30 a.m. We will commence a lovely spring drive that will take us north on the 14 freeway to the junction with US 395. Our journey will cover parts of Los Angeles, Inyo and Mono counties. Just north of the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery on Hwy. 395, there is a recommended fuel stop on the left-hand side of the highway. There we can fill up with possibly the best-priced fuel of the trip.
You’re invited to explore Mammoth Lakes Village on your own, then meet back at the Juniper Springs Resort for a 10:30 a.m. departure to the Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort where we’ll enjoy lunch at The Mill Café, located at the bottom of Chair Two. Reserved parking will be available.
The first scheduled stop will be the Fish Springs Fish Hatchery in Big Pine where we’ll learn how the California Department of Fish and Wildlife raises young trout to restock our Eastern Sierra lakes and streams. We will enjoy a box lunch including a selection of sandwiches, bottled water and chips. This stop will be a great opportunity for awesome photos. Late Friday afternoon, our group will arrive in Mammoth Lakes and check in at the Juniper Springs Resort. We’ll continue north on Highway 395 to our destination, Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area Visitor Center. This is a wonderful interpretive center showing the history and geology of Mono County. Upon our return to Mammoth Lakes, you’re free to roam the shops and explore. Dinner plans include meeting at 6:00 p.m. in front of the Juniper Springs Resort for a short drive to The Yodeler Bar and Restaurant where we’ll enjoy reserved parking in front of the Mammoth Mountain main lodge. Monday, May 29
After a morning breakfast on your own, we plan on picking up box lunches in the lobby before our next destination. We’ll then take a scenic drive via Benton Crossing Road, a two-lane paved scenic byway between California Highway 395 and US Highway 6, to the Laws Railroad Museum just north of Bishop, located on the corner of California Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road. The Laws Railroad Museum and historic site is not just another train museum. The 1883 depot, several other buildings and the last active trains are all on display. In 1960, the Southern Pacific Railroad donated everything to Inyo County and the City of Bishop. The museum is operated by the Bishop Museum and Historical Society. Admission is included in the weekend trip price.
Upon checking out of Juniper Springs Resort, we will assemble and begin our return drive to Southern California. Those who choose to stay through Tuesday are free to explore the area. Our trip includes Friday lunch (Fish Springs Fish Hatchery) and dinner (Juniper Springs Resort); Saturday lunch (The Mill Café, Mammoth Mountain) and dinner (Yodeler Bar & Grill); Sunday box lunch (picked up at Juniper Springs Resort) and Sunday dinner (Convict Lake Resort). All meals include non-alcoholic beverages.

Please R.S.V.P. by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check.

ntroduced as a 2010 model, Porsche’s first-generation (970) Panamera marked the automaker’s transition from a sports car maker that offered sporty SUVs to primarily a purveyor of sporty four-door models that are inspired by its sports car heritage. While this may be dismaying to Porsche purists, the cashcow, four-door sedans and SUVs have enabled Porsche’s return to prominence in
rivals (BMW 7-series, Mercedes S-Class, et al.), with the high rear roofline providing rear passengers as much room as those up front. Porsche engineers certainly had their work cut out for them when designing the 2017 971 Panamera, but early indications are that they aced their test. The 971 features much sleeker exterior styling that is a
strength steel, but the front and rear crash structures, front fenders, hood, doors, and rear watch were aluminum to save weight. The 971 body is even more aluminumintensive, with the entire side panels made of the material; the edges are intricately crimped over and glued to the highstrength steel passenger cell. The floor pans are now aluminum, as are all exterior

top-level endurance racing. (See Porsche’s overall Le Mans victories of 2015-2016.) The 970 Panamera combined the contemporary Porsche corporate front-end styling with an odd, Quasimodo-inspired rear hatchback design that was necessary to comfortably accommodate a pair of six-foot-plus adults in the rear bucket seats. Polarizing looks aside, the 970 drove like one would expect a Porsche-designed four-door, with agility and driving feel that belied its size and mass of over 4,000 lbs. The 970 also featured a sumptuous interior that rivaled its more longstanding German AUSPUFF FEBRUARY 2O17

closer facsimile of the traditional 911 shape, with a sweeping roofline and more prominent rear-end styling with horizontally linked taillights. Backseat passengers will be pleased to learn that despite the sloping roofline, rear headroom is about the same as before thanks to lower seating positions for all four seats (which also serves to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity for improved handling). The 970 was the first volume-production Porsche to make extensive use of aluminum construction. The main passenger cell was composed of various grades of high-
body panels. All of this results in over 150 lbs of weight savings from the 970 body shell, but additional equipment adds the weight back on. Because Porsche is part of the VW/Audi conglomerate, the 971 is based on the new “MSB” modular platform for front-engine, RWD/AWD configurations. The MSB architecture will be shared with the upcoming Audi A8 and future Bentley models. While this may be a cause of concern for those yearning for a distinctly Porsche driving experience, the driving feel and performance of the Macan SUV has prov-
cluster by almost six inches. The transmission case is the same length as the 970 version to allow room for the “E-Machine” of the upcoming Panamera E-Hybrid.
en that the engineers from Weissach are eminently capable of applying their unique magic to a shared platform. The 971 engines will also be shared with corporate cousin Audi. (While loosely based on existing Audi designs, Porsche thoroughly reworked each engine.) In the United States, the base Panamera will receive a 3.0-liter V6 with a single turbocharger and 330 horsepower. The Panamera S and 4S feature a 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 with 440 hp, while the flagship Turbo model is endowed with a 4.0-liter, 550-hp V8. All engines feature an intake and exhaust arrangement that is opposite from a conventional layout. The exhaust manifolds and turbochargers are nestled within the “vee” formed by the cylinder heads, with separate intake manifolds on the outboard side of each cylinder head.
The V8 engine of the new Panamera Turbo also features Porsche’s first application of cylinder deactivation for fuel savings during light load/cruise situations. If less than 180 lb-ft of torque is required, cylinders #2, 3, 5, and 8 are deactivated by switching to a no-lift camshaft lobe; ignition and fuel to those cylinders are switched off, and the engine runs as a V4. If additional torque is needed, the engine seamlessly switches back to V8 mode. All 971 Panameras feature an 8-speed version of the Porsche/ZF PDK dual-clutch gearbox, with promised shift speeds of less than 100 milliseconds in Sport Plus mode, which is 991 GT3 territory! Despite the addition of an eighth gearset, Porsche and ZF engineers managed to shorten the gear
Also standard across the new Panamera range is what Porsche calls its “4D Chassis Control System,” which denotes a centralized control suite that coordinates the various electronic chassis control systems. The 4D system especially comes into play when the Panamera in question is equipped with the optional air suspension system (now with three-chamber air springs for a wider range of spring rate control), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), and the newly available rearaxle steering system (performing the same function as the sports car RAS system as described in the January 2015 Tech Report), which features a single motor that acts upon both rear toe control arms. The new PDCC anti-roll system deserves a special mention as it is now controlled entirely by electronics. The previous Panamera PDCC system used electro-hydraulic actuators that acted upon the center of the front and rear anti-roll bars to quell body roll. Hydraulic pressure was derived from a tandem circuit of the power steering pump and was in turn distributed via a pair of hydraulic distribution blocks to the anti-roll bars. This complex system was necessary because hydraulics are able to perform a relatively large amount of mechanical work with minimal electrical input, and it is well suited to a 12-volt automotive electrical system. Continued on page 22
This so-called “hot vee” arrangement has been used by BMW, Mercedes, and Audi for a number of years. The compact exhaust manifolds allow faster turbocharger response along with a shortened air intake path. The V8 engine of the turbo uses twin-scroll turbochargers, which further enhances turbocharger spool-up by using siamesed turbine inlets to take advantage of the engine’s specific exhaust pulse pattern. While the biturbo V8 of the Porsche 971 Turbo appears similar to that of the currently available Audi RS6, it is in fact a complete redesign, according to Porsche. A version of this engine will power the next RS6 along with certain Bentleys. DE R

The New Panamera Continued from page 21
The 971 PDCC system provides the same basic function of counteracting body roll, but it uses a 48-volt subsystem (powered by a DC to DC inverter instead of a separate 48V lithium-ion battery as in the sister Bentley and Audi applications of this system) to power the anti-roll bar actuators. The greater electrical power provides the rapid response time and fine control necessary to keep the 4200-lb sedan flat while lapping the Nurburgring or the neighborhood school run. The power steering rack is now also electronically controlled (see my tech feature in the November 2015 issue of Panorama for more info), so an engine-driven hydraulic pump and lines are no longer necessary. Another high-tech feature of the 971 will be an advanced active cruise control system known as InnoDrive, which is also Porsche’s first foray into semi-autonomous driving. InnoDrive will not be available in the US at the launch of the 971 (we will likely get a watered-down, lawyer-approved version in the future); but in other markets,
it will use advanced GPS to scan the road up to two miles ahead to prepare the drivetrain for upcoming gradient or speed limit changes. The car will be gradually coasted down or accelerated to accommodate any changes to maximize fuel efficiency. Unlike Tesla’s AutoPilot system, the driver will still need to be able to steer the car. For the 970 Panamera, Porsche shied away from a centralized infotainment control interface like BMW’s iDrive, instead designing a layout that featured a vast sea of buttons and switches in the center console. The 971 simplifies and digitizes the control interface somewhat with the “Porsche Advanced Cockpit” array of touch controls with haptic feedback. The latest PCM screen is a full twelve inches across, and rear-seat passengers get their own touch screen controls in the rear of the center console. The traditional Porsche analog tachometer is now flanked by a pair of digital TFT screens that display userconfigurable information as necessary. An Executive extended-wheelbase model will also be available, with more legroom and accoutrements for rear-seat passengers who prefer to be driven around by others. An E-Hybrid, Turbo S, and GTS
models are also imminent, as is a wagon version similar to the Sport Turismo concept car of 2012. Overall, the 971Panamera looks like another winner for Porsche, and it will likely further help increase its market share. =
