The President’s Column

Remembering Barry Weinstein

I

first got to know Barry at a club event many years ago. We were having dinner at The Palms Restaurant in Carpinteria. Barry and I were jostling for space at the grill where you cook your own entrée. Naturally, the lighthearted kidding soon began. We introduced ourselves and chatted a bit. I knew immediately that Barry was my new friend in PCA. I soon realized that Barry was everyone’s new friend in PCA. His outgoing nature, sense of humor and positive attitude ensured that he was universally liked and respected.

MIKE HODSON

He gave 100% to everything he did, whether it was work or pleasure. We shared common interests in aviation and motorcycling, and he would speak passionately about both activities. Taking on new challenges and meeting them gave him great pleasure, but he was always very honest about himself and his humanity. His sense of fairness ran deep, with no grey areas. If a friend had been poorly treated, Barry was not happy until the situation had been justly corrected. He greeted all with his winning smile. Being around him felt good.

Our club has been fortunate over the years to have many members offer their services to volunteer at events, manage committees, and participate as directors and officers. Above and beyond these tasks, they provide goodwill, camaraderie and compassion to the membership at large. Such an individual was Barry Weinstein. During the past 15-plus years, Barry (and his beloved Valerie) acted as activities chairs, advertising directors, and Barry was our Vice President for several years. Twice he was voted “Man of the Year” for our region, a title he rightfully earned. He was always ready to “grab the bull by the horns” to get things done or to advocate positions that he believed would benefit all. His standards were very high, both professionally and personally. Sadly, he lost his battle with cancer on February 2nd. Barry will be sorely missed, but he leaves behind an exemplary legacy. Thank you, Barry, for everything you did and everything you stood for.

His lovely wife, Valerie, made his life complete. Most important to him was her happiness, and he worked tirelessly to make that happen. A board meeting was held at their home, which was decorated so beautifully, it was hard to believe anyone actually lived there. Obviously, Barry lived the wise old adage, “Happy Wife, Happy Life.”

here is a lot of fast driving going on in this month’s Der Auspuff. First up, our East Coast Correspondent, Joe Carastro, takes us along as he experienced January’s “Rolex 24” in Daytona, FL. The club’s much-anticipated visit to L.A.’s new Porsche Experience Center on January 28 was a huge hit. The PEC is beautiful and a must-visit destination for any Porsche person within driving distance. From the eye-popping collection of valuable cars on AUSPUFF MARCH 2O17

2017 ROLEX 24 DAYTONA The action in Turn 1 coming off the front straight

Der Auspuff East Coast Correspondent Joe Carastro

STORY & PHOTOS BY JOSEPH CARASTRO, IV

Both General Motors and Ford were fully invested this year in the Daytona Prototype and GT LeMans classes, respectively. Porsche debuted two new 911 RSRs and new driver teams with a “relocated” engine (they just couldn’t bear to call it “midengined”). Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser (former 918 Project Director and now Head of Porsche Motorsport) was there with his entire team to ensure that no stone was left unturned in the effort for victory.

Santa Barbara’s Patrick Lindsey

The #911 RSR experienced three unscheduled tire changes early on, possibly due to the chilly temps before the team was able to optimize the set-up. A nearly flawless race followed for the team (the #912 RSR was set back due to a right front suspension repair) with the result that after 24 hours, the #911 finished second in class (sixth overall), two seconds behind the Ford GT due to determined driving by Patrick Pilet in the last stint. Dr. Walliser was quoted as follows: “That was an incredible race and a great debut for our new 911 RSR. We were only two seconds off victory after 24 hours, but that doesn’t matter in this case. It was an extremely tough race, a fantastic fight for victory. Despite the bad weather conditions, the fans were treated to everything that makes racing so exciting. Both 911 RSR made it to the finish well and without any real problems. Alegra Motorsports’ victory with the 911 GT3 R in the GTD class was the icing on the cake.

We’re particularly thrilled by the fact that the youngest and most inexperienced crew has won, with excellent support from our factory driver, Michael Christensen. This Daytona result is a fine achievement.” The victory by the Alegra #28 car marked Porsche’s 77th class win at Daytona. Of local interest to SBR members was the #73 Park Place Motorsports GTD 911 driven by Santa Barbara native, Patrick Lindsey. Sadly, the car was shunted by another entrant (Patrick was not driving) and was a DNF. The Wayne Taylor Cadillac team claimed the overall victory and the win in Daytona Prototype class. ith the drive being the equivalent of a trip from Santa Barbara to San Francisco, the late January Rolex 24 proves to be an irresistible draw for Charleston, SC, Porsche clubbers. Six of us rented a house on Daytona Beach (pool and hot tub included) and ventured down for the beginning of the Endurance Racing season. This year’s Rolex 24 was somewhat LeMans-esque with chilly temps and a drizzling overnight rain.

any of us have been looking forward to the opening of the Los Angeles Porsche Experience Center, specifically located in Carson, since the project was first announced a few years ago. Finally, last November, the 53-acre facility, complete with a road-handling course, opened to the public. The PEC is the second such destination in the U.S., the other being at PCNA Headquarters in Atlanta. There are three other similar set-ups around the world. The Los Angeles venue is also the home of Porsche Motorsport North America, giving guests an insider’s look at Porsche’s factory race team and its winning cars. At the PEC, customers can drive the latest Porsche models (with an instructor) through different “modules” on the track, each designed to demonstrate the cars’ unique abilities. First is the handling circuit, which imitates a country road with flowing corners and undulations. Next is a kick-plate track where a computercontrolled hydraulic plate (set flush to the road surface) can put a car into a skid or spin, giving drivers a sense of what it’s like to lose control in wet or icy conditions. There is also a separate “ice hill,” which is a seven-percent grade kept wet by water jets, creating a AUSPUFF MARCH 2O17

very low-friction surface to teach the situations of oversteer and understeer. An off-road course gives Cayenne and Macan drivers a chance to sample the more rugged capabilities of those models. Finally, there’s an acceleration straight made just for launch control. At the end of the three-quarter-mile-long straight is a replica of the famed Carousel banked turn on the Nordschleife in Germany. When you step away from the track, you can continue your immersion into the world of Porsche at the Human Performance training facility. There, you can receive a customized performance and fitness assessment similar to the programs specifically created for Porsche’s championship racing drivers. The center also offers event spaces and dining options, state-of-the-art driving simulators, and a retail store with exclusive PEC-branded merchandise, all of which lives up to the Porsche standard. Our members arrived at the facility mid-morning. After a quick security check, we enjoyed the great display of Porsches in the PEC main showroom. Adjacent to the track, the main area pro-

vides an excellent view of the Porsches that were driving the various circuits. The highlight of our visit was the chance to take a two-lap tour of the track with a driving instructor piloting a Cayenne or Macan. Eight drivers took three guests at a time for two high-speed laps around the handling circuit – a five-minute adrenaline rush! After this exhilarating ride, we enjoyed lunch in the Speedster Café and Cayenne Room before continuing our self-guided tour of the facility. Several of our members tried out their skills on the driving simulators, selecting from 18 well-known racetracks including Le Mans, Laguna Seca, Sebring and Nürburgring. Three SBR members took advantage of the 90-minute Porsche Driving Experience with an instructor to coach them through the seven different circuits. (See Don Dickey’s article on page 21.)

There is a lot to see and do at the new Porsche Experience Center, which is just between the 405 and 110 freeways in Carson. If you weren’t able to join the club on this visit, we encourage you to drop in on your own and enjoy it for yourself. =

s I learned years ago, you don’t have to be the first, but you need to experience it firsthand. Some seat-time with a professional driving instructor at the Los Angeles Porsche Experience Center allowed me to spend an afternoon immersed in Porsche firsthand. After spending the late morning with fellow club members touring and enjoying the new PEC in Carson, I decided to spend some extra money to get some one-on-one driving experience. Approaching a beautiful 2017 Miami Blue 911 Carrera S, a Porsche trained instructor pointed out to me each of the track elements that I was about to experience.

roads with a number of corners and undulations. As I completed each lap, I learned the line. My speed increased, becoming progressively smoother as my instructor gave me tips along the way on lane position, braking, and turn-in points.

Low Friction Circle This is a large, round section of very smooth concrete coated with a constant supply of reclaimed water, which affords very little traction. As we headed off counter-clockwise, the instructor engaged and disengaged the traction control (PSM). I was learning to find the balance between throttle and steering to keep the car pro-

Moving forward, I realized my foot was at full throttle as the car climbed to the top at a steady pace. The Carrera S took it with ease because the Porsche Stability Management had taken control of the throttle braking, allowing the car to climb the hill without losing traction. At the top, we turned around and proceeded down the slope with the PSM turned off. Trying to maintain control of the car was almost impossible. We started sliding sideways, eventually facing the opposite direction. We then headed back to the top, engaged the PSM system and easily drove to the bottom of the hill without incident.

Not First, But Firsthand STORY BY DON DICKEY PHOTO BY REM LAAN We started with a high-speed, lanechange exercise. Accelerating to 45 MPH, we came up on a wall of cones with a very small gap on the left side to mimic an unexpected fast lane change. Driving a 2017 Carrera 911 S with the new 3-liter, twin-turbo, flat six power plant made the first exercise effortless. Next was a high-speed slalom, driven with traction control (Porsche Stability Management, PSM) both on and off. To wrap up the autocross section, we did a Launch control start: 0 to 60 to 0, using every inch of the track and working the car’s ABS system to the max.

Handling Course This section is designed to mimic country

gressively moving in the same direction and not wind up backwards. My instructor kept reminding me to look ahead of the car, not over the hood. He helped me to use my steering and throttle in harmony to keep the car moving forward. At first I didn’t know what the heck he was talking about, but after two or three times with the car facing the wrong way, I figured it out. We completed a number of revolutions on the skid pad and moved on.

Ice Mountain This segment is an ominous, sevendegree hill climb with a stream of water making for another extremely slick surface. Stopping at the bottom of the hill, we engaged PSM and slowly began our climb.

Kick Plate That piece of red concrete that visitors can see from the second-floor balcony of the 917 Restaurant at the PEC is the Kick Plate. My instructor told me to keep my focus on the spectators standing on the balcony to keep my mind from anticipating whether the hydraulic kick plate (flush to the concrete) was going to pop up and send the car to the right or the left. The first time, I guessed the kick plate wrong, sending me into a 360° spin with my instructor softly chuckling in the background and saying, “I told you not to anticipate.” After three more rather harrowing attempts, I was able to keep the car under control and make it to the end of the pad without doing an embarrassing doughnut. This is simply a polished concrete surface with many curves to provide a situation where the vehicle can be placed in an oversteer condition. That’s the textbook explanation. From my point of view, this was a wonderful experience of learning how oversteer and throttle response can push the car to its limit, letting the back end hang out around the turns. I’m not fond of losing grip on the track, but the experience of throttle response, coupled with the Porsche Stability Management system, allows you very precise control of your car in an extreme low-friction situation.

line to enter the Carousel in excess of 100 MPH. Holding speed, we kept the Porsche in a continuous 340° turn banked at 20+ degrees. It was very smooth and rather easy to complete with Porsche Stability Management on. I could feel the PSM making everso-slight corrections to the balance of the car by braking each wheel independently. Following this adrenaline rush, I knew my time with a professional instructor had been money well spent. What I take home from this experience is a better understanding of the capabilities of my own Porsche 911 Carrera S. I would personally recommend the Porsche Experience Center/Los Angeles, as well as the Porsche Sport Diving Experience in Birmingham, Alabama, and the Autobahn in Germany, because I’ve been fortunate enough to experience them -- not first, but firsthand. =

At the far left-hand side of the PEC is a long straightaway providing a safe and controlled environment to fully explore Porsche’s launch control with an added twist. Near the end of the three-quartermile straight, a replica of the Karussell (Carousel), the famous banked curve on the Nordschleife (North Loop) of the Nürburgring, is waiting for you. My first look at the Carousel was at a low rate of speed so that I could get a feel for what I was going to experience in a few moments. We proceeded back to the opposite end of the facility, made a U-turn, and pulled to a full stop. Activating launch control, I slid my left foot off the brake with my right foot pinning the throttle to the floor. We rocketed down the straightaway without letting up, at which point I turned to the right, following the

t has finally happened. After nearly five and a half decades of defying physics, convention, and many naysayers with its omnipresent rear-engine sports coupe, the Porsche factory has produced a mid-engined, non-prototype 911 race car. Yes, the official reason for the change was for aerodynamic considerations (more on this later), but the writing has been on the wall for some time. While Porsche’s engineers have always been lauded for their ability to pummel the laws of physics into submission, there have been whispers asking what they would be capable of if given a clean-sheet, mid-engined design that is unencumbered by the canon laws of the traditional 911 layout.

Shortly after the landmark 1998 debut of the water-cooled 996, Porsche introduced a Cup racing version for use in the onemake Carrera Cup racing series, following in the footsteps of the previous 964 and 993 versions. Porsche never considered the engine of the volume 996 Carrera (and 986 Boxster) suitable for racing use, so Porsche installed an engine that was based upon the Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 racer of 1996-1998.

the homologated 996 GT3 street car and in turbocharged form for the 996 (and 997) Turbo and GT2. Soon after the debut of the 996 Cup race car, Porsche introduced the 996 GT3R for use in international sports car racing. The GT3R was still based upon the standard 996 body shell but used carbon-composite body panels to cut nearly 200 lbs. from the weight of the 996 Cup. The GT3R also had a more developed front fascia with better cooling/venting and a larger rear wing for more downforce. Porsche improved the GT3 Cup and R year upon year with more power and more downforce, with the first GT3RS version appearing in 2001 and the even lower and wider GT3RSR appearing in 2004, complete with a sequential racing gearbox to replace the previous H-pattern version.

As painful as it might be for Porschephiles to hear, the Porsche was simply being outpaced due to the inherent limitations of its time-honored drivetrain configuration.

To fully examine the impetus and implications of this move, it is prudent to briefly examine the history of the water-cooled 911 race car and its competition. Well, brevity could prove difficult given the myriad sanctioning body and rules changes to top-level sports car racing during the last twenty years, but here goes!

MARCH 2O17 AUSPUFF DE R

In recent years, the production-based 991 RSR race car was being outpaced on the international GT sports car racing circuit by its more exotic (read: less production-based) competition in the form of the Ferrari 458/488, the Chevrolet Corvette C6R/C7R, and more recently, the cleansheet Ford GT. As painful as it might be for Porschephiles to hear, the Porsche was simply being outpaced due to the inherent limitations of its time-honored drivetrain configuration.

At its heart, this Hans Mezger-designed flat-six employed the robust crankcase design of the air-cooled 911 with its eight main bearings and dry-sump lubrication system. The case was modified to accept external coolant passages and water jack-

Continued from page 23 ering ride height, the basic 996 body shell remained at its core. The vast majority of the racing parts could conceivably be bolted onto a street GT3. Porsche even retained the street 911’s McPherson street front suspension design in the 996 and 997 race cars, despite its inferior geometry for racing use. Meanwhile, the Porsche’s GT-class competition was becoming increasingly removed from the production cars that they were ostensibly based upon. For example, the BMW M3 GTR of the late 1990s and early 2000s was allowed to run a racing V8 engine while the street M3 still used the company’s classic inline-6. The racing Chevrolet Corvette evolved with a different chassis than that of the street car, with the engine moved further rearward for better weight distribution and a different suspension design. Therefore, the 996 and 997 GT3R/RS/RSR race cars’ closeness to the street design gave it a legitimacy that could be pointed to by its fans even during seasons when they were outpaced by the competition.

991 chassis. As the first break from 911 tradition, Porsche received a waiver from the sanctioning bodies of US and European GT racing (IMSA and the ACO, respectively) to use a more race-suitable, double A-arm suspension for better front wheel control. The car’s wheelbase was also lengthened versus the street car’s in an attempt to improve weight distribution.

larger rear wings, in addition to prominent rear diffusers. For the uninitiated, a diffuser is an aerodynamic device at the rear floor of the vehicle that serves to enhance aerodynamic downforce by simultaneously speeding up and cleaning up airflow underneath the car.

Despite these advances, the 991 RSR enjoyed limited success in top-level GT racing and generally struggled to keep pace with the Ferrari 458 and Chevy Corvette competition. The traction provided by the rear-mounted engine continued to be an asset during wet-weather conditions, however, as evidenced by the 991 RSR’s overall victory in the rain-soaked 2015 Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta (besting prototype race cars that were normally much quicker).

Also in 2016, Ford re-entered international sports car racing to much fanfare with a brand new GT-class racer (simply known as the “GT”), along with the promise of an upcoming homologated roadgoing version of the car. The Ford factory team mounted a no-holds-barred assault on last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans with no less than four works-entered cars, all of which featured obscenely large rear diffusers trailing from the rear. The Ferrari and Chevrolet teams also took advantage of the new rules and installed slightly less prominent aerodynamic accouterments.

The final straw came after rules changes were announced by the ACO/WEC and IMSA for the 2016 season, which allowed entrants in the top “production-based” GT class (now known as GTE) much more freedom in terms of aerodynamics. The new regulations enabled manufacturers to devise much deeper front splitters and

All of this caught Porsche flat-footed, as the 911-based 991RSR had the slightly inconvenient problem of the engine being in the place where a rear diffuser would mount. Therefore, the RSR was woefully off from the pace of its GTE competition at Le Mans 2016. However, salvation was on the way in the form of the radical 2017 991RSR.

All of this begs the question of why Porsche would knowingly hamper its GT racing program by sticking to productionbased cars. The answer is quite simple: economics. The Porsche factory has always offered racing cars and support to privateers, but the 996 GT program ushered in a new era of expansion and profitability for Porsche’s racing department. In fact, Porsche built over 2500 996- and 997-based race cars, many of which are still raced all around the world. Aftersales service and parts departments kept the money flowing. Besides the regular maintenance and component rebuilds demanded by the rigors of racing, it was eminently possible for customers to continually update their cars to suit regulation changes or to make them faster. For example, a 996 Cup car tub could be updated to become a 996 RSR or even to a 997-spec car with a bodywork and engine change, all for a price! By 2012, however, the 997-based Porsche GT racers were clearly being outclassed by the competition, and Porsche scrambled to produce an RSR racer based on the new AUSPUFF MARCH 2O17

ter. Prominent side skirts are also present to smooth airflow along the sides of the car, and the massive rear wing is supported from above by swan-necked supports that are currently en vogue among sports racing cars. All body panels are designed to be removed quickly to allow access to the drivetrain and suspension for repairs.

The Porsche factory was given a reprieve for the 2017 season that enabled the monumental shift of the drivetrain’s location. Porsche has thus far been extremely secretive about the exact placement and orientation of the engine of the new RSR (hence the lack of engine photos accompanying this article), but flipping the drivetrain around and placing the engine in what would be the rear seat area of the street car has allowed the installation of a rear diffuser to match those of its competitors. Like its GT3 Cup and GT3R stable mates, the engine in question is a version of the street-based 9A1-series unit, which finally replaces the venerable Mezger-designed flat-six of the previous RSR. The new engine generates over 510 hp from 4.0 liters, even with the mandated air inlet restrictors in place! This is mated to a racing six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle

shifters. To replace the previous merged layout, a new exhaust system with separate pipes was required to make room for the diffuser, so the flat-six’s voice is distinctly different than before. Because the engine and its firewall was moved forward within the 911 chassis, the driver’s rear view is completely blocked, so a camera coupled with a rear collision warning is used in lieu of a central rearview mirror. To meet new WEC/IMSA safety rules, the driver’s seat has been moved 50mm inward (towards the center tunnel) to provide better side-impact protection for the driver. The seat is fixed in place, so the pedals are movable to accommodate different driver heights. The extra rear downforce imparted by the RSR’s new diffuser requires a commensurate increase in front downforce, which is provided by a much deeper front split-

So what hath Porsche wrought, and how does it perform? Quite well, actually, if the RSR’s recent debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona is an indicator. The two factoryentered RSRs were about a second per lap slower than the more developed Ford GT cars during practice and qualifying. For much of the race, the Porsches struggled to break into the top five in the GTLM class (as the former GTE class is now known). It rained steadily but not heavily during much of the race. Porsche engineers were pleased to learn that the new RSRs proved capable in these conditions, and they slowly moved up the ranks. By the end of the race, the RSRs were on the same lap as the leaders, and the #911 car ended up finishing only three seconds behind the classwinning Ford GT! The #912 car fell back due to suspension damage at the right front, but it still managed a respectable 5th in class. All of this bodes well for the chances of the pair of factory-entered RSRs this season as they compete in both the World Endurance Championship series (which includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans) and at select IMSA events in the United States. Hopefully, the new RSR will be competitive while maintaining Porsche’s legendary reputation for reliability in endurance racing, all while convincing traditionalists that a mid-engine 911 is not such a bad idea! =

MARCH 2O17 AUSPUFF DE R

The extra rear downforce imparted by the RSR’s new diffuser requires a commensurate increase in front downforce, which is provided by a much deeper front splitter.

When viewed in profile, the 2017 RSR appears much shorter and squatter due to much shorter front and rear overhangs than the previous 991 RSR. This change was also made as a proffering to the laws of aerodynamics, and it required relocation of the front radiators. While the new look is quite striking and aggressive, it is slightly less 911-like than before (dare I say it, almost Nissan 370Z-like in profile to these eyes) and serves to underscore the GTE/ GTLM class’s move away from street-based cars and more towards prototype status.

The Indy Museum is open, as is the race course itself, on the days prior to and after the race. The motel rooms are booked (mandatory) for six days, Wednesday through Monday night. The Best Western is in the midst of a very nice “foodie section” of town with lots of restaurants nearby. If you’re interested, please contact me via my Goodie Store email at your earliest convenience: JohnBarrison@gmail.com While this Indianapolis 500 trip is NOT a PCA sanctioned activity, the Central Indiana Region of PCA is stepping in to co-host an after race get-together near our hotel, which might be fun to attend. Race tickets and local hotels seem to be “booking” about 30 days earlier than in my previous years’ experiences. This means airlines, too, which is a critical item. Contact me today, and we’ll get the plans rolling. =

Congratulations to our own Der Auspuff Technical Editor Chris Andropoulos on conquering the Porsche magazine world this month (again). Chris has a feature article in the current “Excellence” magazine, and not one, but TWO more articles in the latest “Panorama.” We’re very proud of Chris, who is the Service Manager at Schneider Autohaus and an SBR member celebrating his seventh year with the club. Check out his take on the new mid-engined Porsche 991 RSR (exclusively for us) starting on page 23 of this month’s Der Auspuff.
