The President’s Column

Code of The West

O

MIKE HODSON

ne of my closest friends in PCA/ SBR introduced me to “Code of the West” several years ago. We were discussing a verbal financial agreement that was now being questioned by one of the parties. “Code of the West,” my friend said. “A deal’s a deal.” When he first uttered the phrase, I had no idea of what he meant. However, being the kind of man he is, I knew that further investigation was warranted.

Research revealed that “Code of the West” (COTW) is a set of informal laws concerning cowboy culture in the Old West. Sometimes referred to as cowboy ethics, COTW touches on many principles, including courage, pride, obligation, fairness, integrity, loyalty, humility and more. Over time, the Code has been distilled into ten phrases. Famous western writer Zane Grey wrote his book Code of the West in 1934. Simple statements -- but not easy to live by. Since learning about COTW, I have realized that the people I admire and respect embody the Code in their daily lives. My friend is one of those people. Some may never have heard about COTW; however, their actions follow the principles, making the world a better place.

During my business career, credibility was of utmost importance. In dealing with domestic and international customers, honesty and openness were not always expected but were usually appreciated. Short-term profits were sacrificed more than once due to my unwillingness to be “flexible.” But in the long run, trusted relationships were forged, resulting in success for everyone involved. My parents -- as did their parents -- lived by the Code every day of their lives, and they were wonderful role models for me. Children of the Great Depression, my parents took nothing for granted and relished the opportunity to work hard to improve the quality of their lives. Fortunately for me, Pamuela was raised with similar values, and we strived to instill those in our children. It is easy to become very cynical about the world we live in today with seemingly endless conflict in so many areas, both geographic and political. My attitude is that while I am unable to change the world, I can definitely positively influence my little part of the world. Every day we interact with many people, whether they are family, friends, business contacts or others. Treating each person with respect, fairness and courtesy normally results in a pleasant experience in return. Oh, yes, you will sometimes be disappointed, and you may be treated poorly. But that is the other person’s problem, not yours. Take the high road, give more than you receive, and it will make you feel so good. The Code of the West delineates great principles to live by each and every day. Discovering the Code and trying to incorporate it into my life has made me a better person. I thank my friend for his introduction.

anta Barbara Region members dedicated their time and efforts over the last year to raise funds in support of our local veterans. We selected Gold Coast Veterans Foundation in Camarillo, for the second time, as our charity to support. We share in their passion to ensure “We Serve Those Who Served Us.” Our ties to our military and veterans run deep with many of our members being veterans themselves or having family members that are veterans. I share in this close tie because I am a Blue Star Family member with my daughter serving in the USAF on active duty in Italy.

tion to the foundation will go directly to veterans in the services provided to low-income, homelss, and elderly veterans as well as transitioning military and their family members. Elderly veterans can get wheelchairs, power chairs, scooters and other mobility aids at no cost. Three homeless veterans are provided housing in Oxnard as well as other services to get them back on their feet. They pay $300 a month and will get their rent returned to them after their six- to nine-month stay. Transitioning military can find support as they seek to further their education and find new careers.

n case anybody hasn’t noticed, California has received wonderful amounts of snow and rain this season. Everywhere we look, the hills are covered in beautiful green vegetation after way too many years of horrid drought. The lakes are happy, the rivers are smiling, and the plants are popping up all over.

On February 25th, 37 Porsches containing over 70 enthusiasts gathered to enjoy the green hills, green valleys, and the green color of money. The Poker Run 2017 commenced at Porsche Santa Barbara (PSB), where we feasted on a tasty continental breakfast to whet our appetites for the adventures to come. With emotions running high early in the morning, everyone collected their first “card” at PSB. Euphoria was rampant as each player drew a card, hoping for extreme good luck. Face cards are always lusted after, their perceived value potentially much greater than their actual value. Some brave souls elected to have their playing partner draw for them. “High value” cards were rewarded with smiles, and “low value” cards -- well, not so much. The usual announcements were made regarding speed limits, no prizes for finishing first, etc. Then Walt Branscome of PSB pleasantly shocked the crowd with his news that the top hand was going to win a drive at the new Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles. WOW! All of a sudden, the stakes were high indeed. Game faces were established, and the atmosphere turned electric. Following a bit of playful jockeying among the contestants, the line of Porsches began to depart the dealership. The weather was as gorgeous as the autos and their contents, with everyone beginning the drive as requested at a sedate pace to minimize the chances of unscheduled stops. Soon after, however, the pace quickened when the roads beckoned. Our route included some newish roads, deliberately chosen to give the Santa Barbara contingent some well-deserved love. Our able dealers flawlessly performed at card stops number one and number two. Card stop number three was also perfectly staffed. Mother Nature, however, had thrown us a curve ball and closed our intended route nearby. No worries, though, because Plan B was calculated and executed with humor and understanding, much appreciated by all. Sadly, we missed out on the most stunning views of the day, together with the most “interesting” road of the day -- but there is always another “drive to drive.” Too soon for some and not soon enough for others, the entourage turned in to Tucker’s Grove Park in gorgeous Goleta. Everyone had their poker sheets at the ready, anxious to compare with the other players. Euphoria had morphed into reality as many had gathered random cards worth virtually nothing. Picnic lunches were unpacked with an eclectic variety of eats from mundane to magnificent! Everyone got exactly what they wanted to eat and drink along with grand conversation and camaraderie adding to the fun. After careful “scrutineering” by the official “scrutineers,” the winners were announced. Claus Eisenbach had the fourth highest hand, Betsy Lutz finished third, and recently returning member Mike Turek scored second. The Grand Prize Winner was Dominic Bonelli, taking home the Porsche Experience Center drive, courtesy of Porsche Santa Barbara. Many thanks are due to our card dealers, Howard and Phyllis Rubenstein; Jim and Wendy Brown; and Pamuela and Chris Hodson. Legacy member and Porsche enthusiast extraordinaire Dan Lindsay was invaluable in helping to plan the drive. Finally, the event would not have occurred without our sponsor, Porsche Santa Barbara. Thanks to everyone, and congrats to all for a wonderful day! =

The

POKER RUN

Porsche Santa Barbara hosted us for a delicious continental breakfast and allowed the club to fill up the dealership’s service driveway with scores of Porsches (see page 16). Soon we were off to our first card stop on beautiful Foxen Canyon Road.

At Tucker’s Grove Park, Wendy Brown and Mike Hodson handed out the fifth card to complete everyone’s poker hands and then got down to the business of determining whose draws were the best.

The Hot Cards: Once all the poker hands were tallied, four winners were announced. Cash prizes went to (left-right) Claus Eisenbach Betsy Lutz, and Mike Turek, while Dominic Bonelli scored a trip to the Porsche Experience Center courtesty of Porsche Santa Barbara.

While the sun was playing hide-and-seek with us, we unpacked our picnic lunches and enjoyed a day without rain. The drive had been a beautiful one with the hills and valleys filled with lush, green growth along the backroads of Santa Barbara County.
