The President’s Column

Information

W

e live in an age of information overload. Every minute particle of information in every possible field, from abstraction to zoology and everywhere in between, is endlessly analyzed, studied, parsed and presented to an audience, whomever that may be.

MIKE HODSON

As most of us are mere mortals in all but a select few subjects, receiving, processing and understanding the information in an objective manner is incredibly daunting. Of course, “objective” is a relative term, fraught with endless pitfalls. What may be clearly factual (if such a thing exists anymore) to one person may be overtly biased to another, depending on perspectives. Our challenge is to distill the information received, subject it to our own set of standards and attempt to use the data to benefit our daily lives. While making decisions to purchase our beloved Porsche vehicles, now including sports cars, sedans and SUVs, studying the various specifications from various manufacturers is fairly straightforward. Porsche has the enviable reputation of understating horsepower figures, which is quite interesting. Porsche built its reputation as giant killers with small, nimble cars, using minimal weight and excellent handling instead of brute horsepower. The tradition carries on today, when legions of competitors attempt to produce the “911 fighter” with big power numbers. Sadly for them, the total package does not meet or exceed the 911’s prowess. Somehow, the engineers in Zuffenhausen continue to improve and refine the products, as they have been for over 50 years with the 911. Absolutely amazing.

great bragging rights, but if those times are achieved with a painful ride component, more of the story needs to be told. The balance between comfort and performance is important and, at times, seems like black magic. Whatever it is, Porsche has it figured out. What we receive from different media outlets, including radio, television and print, has become in many cases agenda-based. Reading or listening to several reports of a particular event, depending on the source, can be quite confusing. Variations on the “information” presented can be dramatic, as can the presentation itself. While growing up, I received most of my current event information via the Los Angeles Times. “Watching the news” never happened at our house except when a tragedy occurred, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Even then, the exposure was very brief. Famous news anchor Walter Cronkite was one of the most trusted people in the country, as he was believed to provide factual, accurate reporting in an understandable way. These days, I still do not watch the news, as we do not have any television channels in our house, which has been the situation for nearly 30 years. Our children grew up without television, and somehow they managed to survive. Nowadays, the worldwide web provides me with more information than I care to receive. Selecting what to read, selecting what sites to visit and selecting what to believe are daily challenges. The ease of voicing an opinion or agenda or both to a huge potential audience is very tempting and results in a seemingly infinite number of stories. What we do with the information we receive is important because it affects our daily lives and how we live.

Subjective qualities such as ride and handling are difficult to quantify. Lap times around the famous Nurburgring provide

S

aturday, March 18, 2017, dawned as a cool, crisp, foggy morning, almost the perfect beginning for the adventure that was to come. More than 100 participants had signed up for SBR’s “March Mountain Run to The Rock Inn,” and the initial meeting-point was Porsche of Santa Barbara. We left the dealership promptly at 9:00 a.m., making our way to Highway 150, the back way into Ojai, where we met another group of our members eager for the drive. Following a quick break, we were off and traveling up Highway 33 to Lockwood Valley Road towards Gorman. As we reached the summit of the Ojai mountains, the view of the Southern California coast shrouded in fog made for a breathtaking sight. Lockwood Valley Road, for those who’ve not driven it, is approximately 70 miles of two-lane blacktop featuring some of California’s most scenic vistas. Following our rainy winter, both sides of the road were blanketed in deep green foliage and abundant wildflowers. It made for a spectacular drive. Crossing Interstate 5 in Gorman led us into the Antelope Valley, which was covered in gold as we drove through the California Poppy Reserve. From there, it was south into the mountains and pine trees for the final push down to Lake Hughes and The Rock Inn. As our Porsche contingent arrived, we were greeted by the Rock Inn staff with a selection of sandwiches along with never-ending fries, onion rings, sodas and iced tea. After lunch, the group was rewarded with a raffle of Porsche memorabilia from the recently completed Werks Reunion at Amelia Island, Florida.

A History of The Rock Inn The Lake Hughes Trading Post, as The Rock Inn was originally known, was completed in 1929. Built entirely of rock quarried in the Lake Hughes area, it’s two stories tall with arched windows and doorways as well as a large stone fireplace. The building served as a store, post office and hotel. It also functioned as a stage stop and, at a later time, a bus station. In 1975, the property was purchased by the family of actor Paul Koslo. Koslo took sole ownership in 1979, renovating the building, reinforcing the rock structure and remodeling the second floor into bed-and-breakfast rooms. While Koslo owns the stone building, the proprietor of today’s Rock Inn is Warren St. John. The inn is a popular weekend stop for motorcycle riders who come in for sandwiches, burgers and cold beverages.

Overall, this was a wonderful event. Everyone agreed that the roads we’d driven were built for Porsches. = DE R

I would like to extend special appreciation to Dave Brooks, who showed up to his first autocross to volunteer. He shared the starter responsibility for the morning and was our sole starter for the timed runs. Thank you, Dave, for performing this very important function and for your willingness to help out in whatever way we needed. Remember, the autocross is open to all our members. I hope you will consider volun-

teering or driving in the next event. Some members have volunteered in order to see what AX is all about and then, as a result, have driven in the next event. Could this be you the next time? Some of our long-time volunteers are looking to be replaced. Please consider volunteering for our October autocross. It is a great way to get involved in the club and interact with members on a different level. Please contact me if you would like to learn how you could help your club produce the next autocross. =

The Vintage Motorcycle Museum

STORY AND PHOTOS BY REM LAAN

The Vintage Motorcycle Museum houses more than 100 motorcycles from the collection of Virgil Elings, a local professor, entrepreneur, philosopher and philanthropist. It includes everything from an early 20th century board racer to the first carbon fiber GP motorcycle, almost all of which are in original, unrestored condition. The beauty of motorcycles, unlike cars, is that the engineering is fully visible

to see and appreciate. We saw quite a few good designs and even more bad ones.

previous owner had cautioned him to only drive it in a straight line.

When we arrived, Virgil was busy personally changing out some of the motorcycles on display. With great pleasure, he showed off his Honda NSX street racer. What do you do when the regulations change? You convert your eight-cylinder engine to a four by removing the cylinder walls between adjacent cylinders and installing oval pistons! This was but one of many technical innovations that Virgil showed our group.

Many thanks to Virgil Elings and Jill Ballard, our personal docents, for making the visit so special.

The pride of his collection is a 1922 Megola, of which only a few remain in existence. This beauty features the wheelbase of a Porsche Boxster, with front-wheel drive courtesy of a five-cylinder radial engine mounted in the front wheel. When asked how well it corners, Virgil said the

After 90 minutes at the Vintage Motorcycle Museum, we moved on to Industrial Eats, a “farm to table” restaurant in Buellton. Owners Jeff and Janet Olsson treated us to a lunch of interesting salads, including a unique beet and hummus salad, followed by several of their pizza offerings topped with locally produced cheeses, meats and vegetables. For dessert, we had chocolate brownies and the first locally grown strawberries of the season. Yum! n Thursday, March 16th, 23 RUFians drove from the Sears store in Santa Barbara to Solvang for a tour of the Vintage Motorcycle Museum followed by lunch at Industrial Eats in Buellton. After weeks of rain, we experienced a sunny, warm day for the drive over the San Marcos Pass to Solvang. The Santa Ynez Valley was so green that it looked like Ireland. It was wonderful to be able to see water in Lake Cachuma again!
