The President’s Column

We Need Your Help

H

ere we are halfway through 2017, and it is already time to plan for 2018. The Santa Barbara Region is seeking candidates to fill two Board positions for next year.

Firstly, Der Auspuff Editor John Alfenito is retiring after nine years in his position. As we all know, John has done a fabulous job creating our beloved Der Auspuff every month. Now it is time to locate a suitable person to take the reins. John will, of course, help the new editor learn the production techniques and methods, which involve filling in the “template” that John uses every month.

MIKE HODSON

This means that instead of starting each issue with a blank sheet of paper, a substantial part of the magazine is fundamentally produced already and just needs updating. Modern computer technology also helps drastically with the ability to design and edit pages with a few keystrokes instead of tedious hours of cutting and pasting via trial and error. Interested persons are encouraged to contact either John Alfenito (DerAuspuff@gmail.com) or myself (aitchpm@gmail.com) for further information.

Secondly, my term as President will be over this year. Per our Region by-laws, elected officers are limited to three successive terms, each term being one calendar year. Frankly, I have been surprised with the workload of the position. Having been the President of my own company for many years, I expected much more pressure and problem solving to be required. Wishing to get a feel for the dynamics of the Board, I attended several meetings before formally announcing my candidacy. Imagine my surprise when the meetings went smoothly, stayed on point and were very efficient. Thanks to the very high level of experience and professionalism of the Board members, my job was to oversee the club’s workings, including the finances, which were and continue to be in excellent shape. There was nothing broken that needed to be fixed then, and the situation is the same today. Naturally, I will be available to help the new President become successful in the position. Again, most of the duties of the President are based on precedent. There are very few new roads to be traveled. As most of the other Board members will be continuing in their roles, the strength of the Board will remain solidly in place. Please give these positions your serious consideration. Indeed, these jobs are not trivial and do require commitment. However, the satisfaction that you receive by working with a wonderful group of people is worth the effort. We all love the Santa Barbara Region and the people who make it so special. Joining the group as a participant brings great rewards. Thank you for listening.

The California

FESTIVAL OF SPEED STORY BY MIKE HODSON EVENT PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER

T

he alarm chirped at zero dark thirty, but I was already awake. Every year in April, the Zone 8 Festival of Speed is held at the Auto Club Speedway in scenic Fontana, California. Adrenaline was flowing through my veins, and it was time to head east as I do at this time every year.

Full disclosure compels me to state that Fontana itself may not rival Canyonlands National Park for scenic beauty, but it more than makes up the difference by hosting the most sensational array of Porsche racing cars this side of the Rockies. Everything from “run what you brung” street-able stockers to exotic racers toted about in cubic megabuck transporters, the eye candy was everywhere, not to mention the cars. Naturally, great sounds go with interesting cars. Even the most jaded motorsport enthusiast finds it difficult to resist the screaming melody of a pure racing engine at full song. Accessibility is one of the best aspects of the Festival of Speed (FOS). Unlike most racing events, AUSPUFF JUNE 2O17

DE R

12

FOS spectators can tour the pits unencumbered, talk to the crews and drivers and feel welcome while being up close and personal to the action. Over the years, my volunteer roles have varied widely from timing and scoring (somewhat sterile) to my assignment this year when I was a “hot pit” traffic control person. The position sounds fundamentally simple. Our job was to keep the hot pits safe as race cars, pit crews, vendors and spectators converge from every direction with destinations mostly known and some unknown. Dealing with the drivers was relatively easy. They came off the track doing 150 MPH or more and needed to slow down to around 15

The fellas in the pit crews were an interesting bunch, and from the way they behaved, one would think that some were rehearsing for a four-second, Formula One pit stop. Intently focused on the job at hand, they can be in another world without fear or favor. Spectators were another kettle of fish. By and large, they were friendly, cooperative and attentive. But throw a cell phone or other conversation into the mix, and chaos ruled the day. Those folks couldn’t walk and talk at the same time, much less drive. Volunteers were everywhere, keeping the event running smoothly. The Santa Barbara Region was ably represented, most notably with Don Dickey running the track tours where you can take your buggy onto the track. If you’re lucky enough to get into and/or behind the right group, you may be able to let the ponies

truly run. SBR photographer extraordinaire Ted Lighthizer was resplendent in his all-white photo shoot togs, capturing all the action with his array of equipment. Doreen Pankow was there as well, giving her usual 150% to make things run smoothly. New for 2017 was “Introduction to Autocross,” a chance for the curious to experience a fun drive through a coned course. The 911 timeline from 1965 onward is always a hit and is also a great visual education as to how our beloved machines have evolved over the years. Vendor row, corral parking, food trucks and more made for an enjoyable day of Porsche total immersion mania. Driving home through refreshingly light traffic, I reflected on my years attending the festival. On the rare occasions where I was unable to volunteer, my perspective was quite different. Donning the bright orange shirt and helping to make the event a success was so much better. Being a participant instead of a spectator makes all the difference. Yes, it takes time and a small commitment. The benefits are well worth the cost. Thanks to Zone 8 for another outstanding year. =

MPH. Simple hand signals, a friendly wave, and away they went back to their garages -- for the most part. For a few that were still in race mode, assertive action was required in the form of unmistakable physical motions that would, hopefully, slow them down way below warp speed.

In addition to all the cars there were scores of vendors for Festival of Speed visitors to visit.

FESTIVAL OF SPEED

Once again this year, the very successful Zone 8 California Festival of Speed was “driven by volunteers.” It’s hard to imagine how an event of this magnitude could ever be accomplished without the help of PCA members from all over the region. Thanks to everyone!

he Gimmick Rally STORY BY JERRY LASNIK EVENT PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER

DE R

JUNE 2O17 AUSPUFF

19

The Gimmick Rally 2017

T

he Gimmick Rally began, as it often does, at Rusnak Porsche in Westlake Village where we were treated to a delicious breakfast from Corner Bakery, compliments of Rusnak. After a chance to enjoy the company of other rallyers, it was time to get down to business with the pep talk/instructions/warnings presentation by Jerry Lasnik, half of the team of Jerry & Pam. This was the fifth Gimmick Rally we have created, so we were confident (mostly) that it would run smoothly.

Finally, it was the time of reckoning, the moment where we handed them the clue packets as they exited Rusnak to embark on their rally adventure. We then went straight to Dos Vientos Park in Newbury Park where the participants were (hopefully) to wind up almost two hours later. Our first challenge, as the job entails, was to attempt taping tablecloths to the metal benches as the howling wind continually undid our work. The scariest part, though, was the wait for the first car to arrive.

I assured the eager bunch -- this time including a fair number of Rally Newbies -- that this was not a race. It was a time to drive carefully, follow the clues in the packet they would receive in a few minutes and look for the answers all around them. These would include anything from street signs, billboards, store and highway signs to essential medical help (Hospital Next Right). Speaking of warnings, it was my duty to tell them about one neighborhood containing some pretty gnarly speed bumps. This information may have saved a few undercarriages, as it turned out later.

Finally, they came and hoped they conquered, but they had to wait to find out the 97 answers until after a fine BBQ lunch put on most ably by Q-Time Barbeque, as they have in past years. Then, after lunch, I began reading off the answers, and the folks corrected their own packets. These Porsche people are very intelligent and knowledgeable. But this always worries Pam and me since they often seem to have alternative answers we hadn’t noticed. No. 85 was “SAVING DOLLARS WHILE YOU REST.” The “right” answer was “America’s Best Value Inn.” Of course, across the street was a mattress store. We had to accept that one.

The day began at Rusnak/Westlake Porsche. Above (L-R): Porsche Boutique Brand Manager Lessette Maldonado, Rallymeisters Jerry & Pam Lasnik, and Rusnak Service Manager Sam Abergel.

Above: Jerry Lasnik hands out the clue packs as the adventure begins. Below (L-R): Pam & Jerry Lasnik with the winners - Hilary & George North, Pamela Regan & Earl Wilcox, and David Cohn & Rikki Horne.

Then there were some more groans from the crowd. They didn’t like these either: “A RUSTIC AMERICANA GASTROPUB” (The Six Chow House). What’s wrong with that? “_____CAN FIX YOUR BELOVED PORSCHE” (German Tek). The sign was too low? WE saw it! “WITH PORCELAIN TILE?” (Mediterranea Restaurant), of course. No porcelain in the Mediterranean? But there were some clever ones, if we do say so ourselves: “WHERE NUNS GET THEIR CLOTHING HEATED” (Habit Grill) “GASEOUS TROMBONES” (76 Station) “FOGHORN LEGHORN & LADY KLUCK ARE PATRONS” (California Chicken Cafe).

Not surprisingly, in general, this tough crowd came through with flying colors. There were a lot of really high scores, understandably, since this has been a continuing trend with participating club members over the years. The three winning teams, after several tie-breakers using Porsche Trivia Questions, were as follows: First Place ($50 Amazon Gift Card): Earl Wilcox & Pamela Regan - Second Place ($35): George & Hilary North - Third Place ($25): David Cohn & Rikki Horne April 29th was another opportunity for Porsche Lovers to have a fun day driving some different roads, challenging their fine brains, enjoying some good food and sharing a few laughs with like-minded, spirited folks. And so ended our fifth Lasnik Gimmick Rally in a row. Whew!

= JUNE 2O17 AUSPUFF DE R

There was some blowback about this clue: “IN 1926, ERRETT CORD OWNED THIS AUTO COMPANY.” The Internet told us it was Auburn, but others insisted it was Duesenberg. We were in no mood to argue about the answer to this clue, so we stood firm.

On April 28, 2017, 793 copies of the May Der Auspuff issues were mailed at a postage cost of $363.73. The balance in the Post Office account is $557.95, which will cover the cost for only the June issue mailing. A motion was made

and approved for a check in the amount of $1,200.00 for postage for the next three months mailing .

Advertising: One new client was added this month. Progress is being made on late payment collections.

Goodie Store: A motion was made and approved for a check in the amount of $496.96 for jackets, all of which have been presold, and $305.46 for black plastic region logo license plate frames. Insurance: Certificates through the end of July 2017 have been ordered and received and given to the event coordinator. Randy Kinsling has not received packets of signed waivers for several events and requests that those having said waivers get them to him. Concours: The Concours will be on October 8, 2017 at Elings Park’s soccer fields in Santa Barbara. The park cost has been paid and a deposit has been made for the catering. The cost to enter a vehicle in the judged section will be $70.00 and to display a vehicle will be $50.00. Extra lunches will be available to purchase for $45.00. Autocross: Steve Ferrari reported that several volunteers will not return and that he needs additional volunteers for the next Autocross. One hundred new cones have been purchased and the new software and equipment are working well with new cabling. Archives: No report. Webmaster: The website is current and up to date. PCA has requested that that all personal email addresses and telephone numbers be eliminated from the PCA/SBR website. Mike Hodson will look into this matter.

Safety: Joe Niederst has agreed to assume the Safety Chair position for 2017. R.U.F.: Rem Laan reported that the first event, which was on March 15, 2017 was attended by 23 members. The next activity will be June 13, 2017 at the Adamson House in Malibu. Public Relations: The Gimmick Rally article has been submitted for publication in Panorama and the Porsche Experience center was in April’s issue of Panorama. Past President: No report President: Old Business: Mike Hodson suggests the search for a new Editor, as well as the new President commence sooner rather than later and anyone with suggestions to advise. John Alfenito and Mike will be meeting to develop a structured search plan. The President’s Column in June’s Der Auspuff will ask for volunteers for the two positions. The July Board meeting will be held on July 5, 2017 instead of the regularly scheduled meeting on the second Wednesday of the month due to a conflict with the Porsche Parade 2017. New Business: In order to increase the number of members and, ultimately, volunteers, it was proposed that the Membership Chairperson have all new members at each breakfast meeting be assigned to a Board member who will introduce them to other members and get to know them. In addition, each new member will be given a license plate frame or a coffee mug. Further, it was proposed that a specified Board member will contact new members in order to invite them to a breakfast meeting. Meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
