The primary emphasis of The Tire Rack Street Survival® program is a “hands-on” driving experience in real world situations. We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. Students are given two hours of classroom training interspersed with a series of driving exercises with a coach while driving their own car. Students practice various braking and avoidance exercises using a variety of cone configurations, and they practice controlling their cars on a wet skid pad. Challenging courses are created in a controlled area to allow the students to experience abnormal car behavior and then learn the proper way to handle the new situation. This provides the students with useful skills to help avoid accidents and to learn how to keep their cars under control in a skid. The students will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

reams can be wonderful, taking you places and allowing you to do things never thought to be possible. My personal favorite recurring dream is where I can fly anytime and anywhere, with only my willpower to make it happen.
Living the very fortunate lives that many of us do, dreaming about having basic necessities is never an issue. Blessed with an abundance of material goods, our thoughts wander towards solving intransigent problems that confound the most brilliant minds.
MIKE HODSON
Turning back the clock can be a beautiful dream, the goal being to recapture quality of life lost with the passage of time. Vanity can be a monstrous problem as the years take their toll, despite our best efforts at denial, procrastination or more drastic measures. Health issues, physical or mental, sap our strength and resolve, making us dream of the “silver bullet” to cure our afflictions. As with everything in our lives, keeping our dreams realistic and achievable will do much to avoid frustration. Many, many years ago, I dreamed of playing professional baseball, as many young men do. As I progressed through the various organizational levels, it became clear that I did not have what it takes to succeed at that level of competition. Although disappointed, I knew that very few make it to the big leagues.
Looking back on my working career, dreams of happiness, satisfaction and balance were more important than monetary gain. Having seen my father overwork himself into an early grave had a huge impact on me. Going from nothing to a life of financial success was everything to him. My goals were different, in large part due to my secure upbringing, which gave me a completely different perspective. Sometimes role models are positive examples to be followed; other times, you choose a different path for your life. My first Porsche quickly turned from a dream into a nightmare. After a tiny bit of shopping, with no research or expertise and lots of raw emotion, I proudly (or so I thought) purchased the wrong car. “Rode hard and put away wet” was too kind a description for that 1969 911T, and the financial pain lasted for years. At the time, everyone told me that I could not afford that car, and they were all correct. Fleeting moments of pleasure were overwhelmed with almost endless grief. But like any valuable lesson, the hard way proved to be the best way. They say it is not important how many times a man falls down. What is important is how many times he gets back up. Our dreams compel us to take chances, which brings the risk of failure. If we never take chances, we never fail -- but we also never succeed, which may be worse. My most important life dreams have all come true. I have a wonderful, lovely, understanding wife. Our children are happy and independent with great futures. Every day is filled with rewarding activities shared with good friends. Blessed with great genes and a reasonable fitness regimen, our health is beyond excellent. Dreaming of anything above and beyond what I enjoy now would be madness.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER
P
rofessional automotive fine artist Nicolas Hunziker comes by his work honestly. He derives his eye for detail not only from his father, an excellent artist, but also from his grandfather and great-grandfather, who were both classically trained painters. This makes Nicolas Hunziker the fourth generation to pick up the family trade.
Fueled By Passion
Nicolas Hunziker
Nicolas trained at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, and he believes in keeping his work simple. He incorporates many elements of Art Deco advertising posters into his paintings, and he calls his style “Period Correct.” I especially like the “bigger than life” look of Nicolas’s artwork and the fact that there’s almost always a driver in the car he’s portraying. Nicolas has created artwork for Porsche Cars North America, Porsche AG and the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Nicolas has also had his artwork featured by the Porsche Club of America (PCA). For example, the 2014 PCA Porsche WERKS event poster was a Nicolas Hunziker creation. Many of Hunziker’s paintings have been given the official stamp of approval from the ACO/24h Le Mans and Gulf Oil LP. McLaren most recently commissioned Hunziker to create eleven acrylic-on-canvas paintings, each featuring one of McLaren’s winning race cars from its illustrious racing history. Besides offering some of the finest motorsport artwork available, many of his most popular paintings are available on T-shirts for a fraction of the price you’d pay for the acrylic-on-canvas painting. In 2016, Hunziker Apparel became an official supplier to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Hunziker’s latest creation is the Hunziker BRM Art Watch, featuring a series of commissioned, one-off, hand-painted dials that are encompassed in custom BRM watch cases. To complete the apparel line, Hunziker has added performance-inspired, casual driving shoes with Gulf Oil and Steve McQueen era themes and styling. Nicolas fuels his passion for life with racecar driving just like his granduncle, the motor racing Prince Bira of Siam. Nicolas owns and drives a 1969 Lotus 51 racecar. To quote Nicolas, this is “An attempt at honoring Bira’s Legacy in the fastest way possible.” Nicolas Hunziker’s art studio and gallery is located in Torrance, California. traveled toward the high desert. Our first destination was the Mount Whitney Fish Hatchery and historic site. The hatchery building was constructed of local granite boulders back in 1916. While there, we had a wonderful picnic lunch sponsored by The Corner Bakery of Westlake Village. Enjoying the cool breeze and shade on
the grounds surrounding the hatchery, we munched on a selection of ham and turkey sandwiches along with fresh fruit and pasta. We continued with a docent tour of the facility, learning about the ecosystem and wildlife of the Eastern Sierra. After a short drive north on scenic US 395, we arrived at our second destination, Fish
Creek Fish Hatchery. There we were able to see and feed some of the approximately three million rainbow and brown trout being raised by California Fish and Wildlife for planting in local streams and lakes. Next stop was our home base at Juniper Springs Resort in Mammoth Lakes. We were greeted by sunshine, beautiful Continued on page 18

Loop, we were surprised by a series of massive waterfalls caused by the extreme warm weather and the heavy snowfall of the past season. Arriving at our destination, Mono County Scenic Visitor Center, we enjoyed a video presentation on the mining history of the Eastern Sierra and, specifically, the Lee Vining Log Cabin Mine. This particular mine was California’s most prolific gold producer from the early 1930s to the 1940s, giving up more gold than any other
mine in California until it was shuttered by executive order during World War II. The mine, located just 20 minutes west of Lee Vining, inspired the Cayenne owners in the group to make an attempt to drive the unpaved road to see the facility. This off-road adventure was quite spectacular until we ran into a local resident who advised us that the road ahead was washed out and impassable. We turned around and headed back down the mountain road, stopping for some spectacular views.
Meeting later that evening, we all drove up the mountain to the Yodler Restaurant for a fabulous dinner selection of salmon, lamb, beef ribs, salad and dessert, which was a wonderful presentation of vanilla ice cream with caramel on a pretzel. We were surrounded by spectacular views of the Mammoth Mountain ski resort and watched as the snowcats groomed the slopes for the skiers expected the next day. Sunday morning began with the distribution of our box
Our first stop was Benton Crossing B&B, a quaint bedand-breakfast with hot springs in a lovely setting in a small, turn-of-the-century town. Our next destination was the Laws Railroad History Museum where we had our picnic lunches and toured the historic buildings, learning the history
of Mono and Inyo counties in the late 19th century. The group jumped on a turn-ofthe-century Death Valley tourist train for a short ride up and down the length of the museum property while our conductor gave a history lesson of the facility. Then we headed back to the Porsches for the run back up Sherwin Grade to the Juniper Springs Lodge. Our last dinner together was Sunday night at the Convict Lake Lodge. This unexpected fine dining experience is nes-
tled in the mountains next to Convict Lake. Once there, we enjoyed a celebratory cocktail reception. Then we were seated at tables with white linen tablecloths, the perfect setting for the three-course meal that followed. After an amazing dinner and dessert, we finished the evening with a wonderful walk around beautiful Convict Lake.

THE ROAD TRIP A
STORY BY MIKE HODSON PHOTOS BY DICK LANGE AND NICOLAS LIAKAS
Hoover Dam was the first venue after an underwhelming but necessary trek over the mostly featureless desert. Construction of the dam began in 1931 and was completed in 1935, two years ahead of schedule and well under budget. Yikes! Approximately 726 feet in height, the arch gravity design of the dam means that the structure is forced into the canyon walls by the pressure of almost 35 billion cubic meters of water. No leakage or seepage occurs, thanks to the amazing engineering and construction. Our full tour included ventilation shafts, generator rooms, as well as views from the bottom and top of the dam. We enjoyed spectacular views of the entire structure from the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Bridge downstream. After an uneventful and inexpensive night in Las Vegas (no gaming!), the journey continued to Zion National Park. Indescribably indescribable is the only way to explain Zion to those who have never experienced the beauty. Impossible vertical sandstone walls with yellow, orange and red shades that change as the day progresses, towering 4,000 feet above the valley floor, every formation, every peak and every face defy reality. Riding the wonderful shuttle bus inside the park allows total immersion, obviating worries about traffic and parking. Hikes are easily accessible from numerous shuttle stops, anything from flat strolls to the signature Angels Landing climb. The Angels Landing hike tests your mettle, both mental and physical, as you ascend the steep switchbacks and then proceed to the final portion’s dramatic vertical exposure on both sides of the path with a substantial anchored chain to clutch along the way.
Concentration and dedication are required to overcome the inclination, and only one of our group made the summit. Next on the agenda was Bryce Canyon, another wondrous yet totally different experience. Mostly flat paths along the canyon rim allow for endless different perspectives. At 8,300 feet above sea level, it is difficult to imagine that the vistas could get much better. Proceeding along the path, however, each lookout changes the view. What could not be exceeded is exceeded and more. The hoodoos appear to be carved by mystical creatures and rise upward with infinite variations in color and shape. Again, the shuttle buses provide convenient transportation, allowing total focus on the sights. Anyone who has ever visited the Grand Canyon will tell you that the grandeur is beyond belief. One of my clearest memories is experiencing the South Rim as a young boy on a family trip. Imagine my surprise when my sister, not the most demonstrative person ever (to put it mildly), burst into tears upon seeing the canyon from the South Rim. If you love the South Rim, well, the North Rim is even better. Fewer visitors, better views, no buses -- and did I mention fewer visitors? With a limited time schedule and a long day of driving ahead, I asked the ranger about the “must-see” sights in the park. Naturally, Nick was way ahead of the curve and had long ago figured out the best and the brightest. Once again, we were not disappointed and stood on the precipices, awestruck by the overwhelming scenery. Kudos go to all the participants for their attitudes. Decisions were made based on what was most fun for the group, the friendly kidding was never anything more, and the friction coefficient was zero. Thanks to everyone for a great trip, great sights and, most importantly, great company. =

Welcome Aboard The silver splendor
now reserved exclusively for PCA’s Santa Barbara Region
Saturday, November 11, 2017 It’s a roundtrip train ride from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo in a beautiful double-decker train car from a bygone era - The Silver Splendor! Enjoy fantastic views of some of California’s last original native coastal landscapes: the legendary surfing beaches of Hollister and Cojo-Jalama, Point Conception, the massive rocket launch sites at Vandenberg Air Force Base, historic Honda Point, marine, avian, terrestrial wildlife and much more. Portions of the rails run adjacent to the historic trails etched by Spanish explorers Gaspar de Portola and Juan Bautista de Anza on their epic journeys through Alta California. Bring a picnic lunch and plan on a fun, relaxing day riding the rails on the superbly restored dome car - The Silver Splendor. Our privately owned, vintage railcar is a pleasurable remembrance of American passenger trains from the ‘40s and ‘50s. The dome car is pulled by Amtrak on 1761 North and 1790 South. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Actual travel time is about five hours with a 10:00 a.m. check-in for tickets at the Santa Barbara station with return to Santa Barbara at 4:30-5:00 p.m. The stop in San Luis Obispo is approximately 50 minutes. When reboarding at the SLO Amtrak station, passengers will switch levels so all can enjoy different views.

The front license plate of Karen Kahn’s Cabriolet was dripping with irony upon her return from the Memorial Day Weekend trip to Mammoth. Karen, an accomplished airline pilot, has had this plate for quite a few years, but on this day the flying critters on CA 395 were no match for the “flying” Porsche.
