PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA • SANTA BARBARA REGION presents the Street Survival School for Teenage Drivers
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2O17 CAMARILLO AIRPORT
IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN DRIVING – IT’S ABOUT LIVING!
Only Licensed or Permitted drivers AGES 15-21 are eligible to sign up.
Register at: http://streetsurvival.org The primary emphasis of The Tire Rack Street Survival® program is a “hands-on” driving experience in real world situations. We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them.
JOIN US ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2017
Students are given two hours of classroom training interspersed with a series of driving exercises with a coach while driving their own car. Students practice various braking and avoidance exercises using a variety of cone configurations, and they practice controlling their cars on a wet skid pad.
8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Camarillo Airport Cost: $75 per student
Challenging courses are created in a controlled area to allow the students to experience abnormal car behavior and then learn the proper way to handle the new situation. This provides the students with useful skills to help avoid accidents and to learn how to keep their cars under control in a skid.
(includes lunch)
For more information go to: www.streetsurvival.org or call 502-649-4871
PCA/SBR local contacts: Mike Hodson aitchpm@gmail.com Doreen Pankow dpankow@sbcglobal.net
The students will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

e travel down many roads in our lives, both literally and figuratively. Sometimes we just listen to the blues. Other times, the journey is all about the blues. Wherever we go and whatever we do, we should learn something about the world, ourselves or both.
We can get the blues from many different sources. Personal and professional relationships can be very complex with different perspectives, agendas and expectations potentially leading to unpleasantness or worse. Financial difficulties have plagued the human race since time immemorial, some self-inflicted, some not. Medical challenges can make us wonder why such bad luck comes our way, regardless of our attempts at healthy living. My trips with the blues have been mostly due to poor judgments on my part. As with many young men, I confused love and lust and suffered the emotional and financial consequences. Periods of bitterness followed, a sad waste of time and energy. Finally, I emerged from the darkness with a clear vision of who I was and what I wanted. Priorities changed miraculously as I considered the future beyond the next 15 minutes. Most important was my resolve not to repeat my previous mistakes. Easier said than done! Having been through some incredibly tough times himself, my dad liked to say, “It takes a hot fire to make strong steel.” Although he has been physically gone for more than 15 years, almost every day I’m greatly inspired by his quiet strength and
Opportunities for me to feel the hot fire were very rare growing up in the genteel atmosphere of suburban Los Angeles in the 50’s and 60’s. For us kids, life was simple, happy and secure. The future always looked bright. Those were wonderful times to be treasured and, hopefully, somewhat recreated for our children. I learned to appreciate how fortunate my life has been and how it continues to be today. With a wonderful wife, terrific children and good health, my blessings are huge. Those people who are never truly challenged may not really experience the blues. Lows in life help to savor the highs and, just maybe, will create motivation to improve every aspect of your life. Embrace new roads, unknown experiences and paths less visited. My comfort zone has been expanded dramatically thanks to the acceptance of unstructured travel. Obsessively, compulsively and disorderly planning of every detail of every trip no longer has any value for me, and it actually adds unnecessary stress. Relax, savor the moment, and if the stuff hits the fan, so be it. Take away the positive, learn from the experience, build character and be thankful. Blues is the road we gotta drive, good, bad or indifferent. Enjoy the journey -- the potholes only make the smooth pavement better.
Santa Barbara Region Collects National Awards At Porsche Parade At the July 9-15 PCA Parade in Spokane, WA, Santa Barbara Region came away with two prestigeous awards. SBR was named “Second Runner Up” (left) in the race for the Region of the Year (The Ferry Porsche Award). This third-place finish among all regions shines a positive light on the hard work and busy schedule of our club year in and year out.

incredible resilience. Remaining calm and composed in the face of strife are admirable qualities to which I aspire. With unimaginable blues journeys travelled, turning to the dark side would have been easy. Easy was never his way; the Greatest Generation most often took the high road. Of course, my father was hugely human, as we all are, “as is, where is, with all faults.” Imperfections are very real, understandable and validating.

The 700 HP 911 GT2 RS STORY & PHOTOS PORSCHE CARS NORTH AMERICA
T
he fastest and most powerful streetlegal 911 model ever, the new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS celebrated its official world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK on June 30th. At the heart of this high-performance sports car is a 700-horsepower, twin-turbo, flat-six engine. Weighing in at 3,241 pounds with a full tank of fuel, the lightweight two-seater accelerates from zero-to-60 miles per hour in 2.7 seconds. The new 911 GT2 RS can reach a top track speed of 211 miles per hour, and it surpasses the 2011 911 GT2 RS by 80 horsepower. The 2018 911 GT2 RS delivers 553 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 37 lb.-ft. compared to the previous 911 GT2 RS. The 3.8-liter engine in the GT2 RS is based on the power plant found in the current 911 Turbo S model. In order to increase performance further, larger turbochargers push an increased volume of air into the combustion chambers. A new additional cooling system delivers optimum cooling at peak loads by spraying water on the intercoolers when the intake air temperature reaches a determined threshold. This reduces the inlet temperature under boost and allows for optimum power AUSPUFF AUGUST 2O17

output, even under extreme conditions. The customized GT seven-speed doubleclutch Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission in the new GT2 RS enables maximum efficiency with uninterrupted torque transfer. The specially developed lightweight titanium exhaust system weighs around 15 pounds less than the system used in the 911 Turbo and delivers a particularly emotional sound. Porsche Design is celebrating the debut of this very special high-performance sports car by releasing a special-issue watch. Offering a nod to the world of motorsport, the Porsche Design 911 GT2 RS watch is exclusively available to owners of the new vehicle and can only be ordered in conjunction with the new GT model.
RACE-BRED CHASSIS The 2018 911 GT2 RS has exceptional dry grip thanks to its race-bred chassis with
rear axle steering and Ultra High Performance (UHP) tires. The stability management system is tuned for spirited driving in the new 911 GT2 RS. The PSM can be deactivated in two stages using the ESC OFF and ESC+TC OFF functions. Large air intakes and outlets and the striking rear wing underscore the emphasis on aerodynamics and down-force. The large, wide wheels with 265/35 ZR 20 tires at the front and 325/30 ZR 21 tires at the rear help ensure outstanding braking and cornering potential. The 911 GT2 RS features Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) as standard. The front fenders, wheel housing vents, outer shells on the Sport Design exterior mirrors, air intakes on the rear quarter panels, and parts of the rear are made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), as are many of the interior components. The front luggage compartment lid is also made from carbon fiber to make the
WEISSACH PACKAGE The optional Weissach package reduces weight by nearly 40 pounds, further enhancing the vehicle dynamics of the 911 GT2 RS. The package includes magnesium wheels and numerous elements made of carbon fiber. For instance, with this optional package, the roof and anti-roll bars are made of carbon fiber, as are the end links on both axles. The 911 GT2 RS forged magnesium wheels reduce both overall and unsprung weight by over 25 pounds, complementing the vehicle’s handling characteristics. When equipped with the Weissach Package, the carbon fiber weave
SPORTY INTERIOR The interior of the 911 GT2 RS is dominated by red AlcantaraÂŽ, black leather, and carbon fiber trim pieces as standard. The GT2 RS Sport steering wheel with shift paddles is also included as standard. Drivers and passengers can experience the driving dynamics of the high-performance sports car in Full Bucket Seats with carbon fiber reinforced backrests, which offer a high level of comfort and lateral support. As in every 911 model, Porsche Communication Management (PCM) serves as the central control unit for audio, navigation, and communication. Porsche Connect Plus and the Porsche Track Precision app are also included as standard, enabling de-
tailed recording, display, and analysis of driving data on a smartphone. The optional Chrono Package expands the PCM functions to include a performance display, which can be used to display, save, and evaluate lap times. The package also includes a stopwatch on the dashboard featuring an analog and digital display. The Chrono Package on the 911 GT2 RS also provides preparation for the lap trigger available from Porsche Tequipment. When using the Porsche Track Precision app in conjunction with the infrared transmitter placed at the side of the track, the lap trigger receiver enables drivers to record lap times with a higher level of precision. The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS model is available to order with a base MSRP of $293,200, excluding the $1,050 delivery, processing and handling fee. It will reach U.S. dealers in early 2018. =

2017 CHILI COOK-OFF S
BR’s 2017 Chili Cook-off was held in Somis at the lovely home of Randy & Sue Kinsling. The spacious interior and patio provided a delightful setting for eating outdoors and enjoying the company of fellow members. Bob & Jeanette Bassett provided their residence for this friendly competition for the first ten years, from 1997 through 2006; and Jim & Terry Middlebrook’s place was the venue from 2007 through 2016. Forty-five participants attended this year’s event, and the road in front of the Kinslings’ house was lined with Porsches. Six members brought pots of chili to be judged, and the other attendees contributed an array of appetizers, salads, breads and desserts to indulge in throughout the afternoon. When it came time for the main course, members moved quickly through the buffet line thanks to the efficiency of our chili servers, who included Wendy Brown, Tara Brundrett, Houri Greko, Pamuela Hodson, Terry Middlebrook and Susan Stone. After feasting on all the scrumptious food and tasting the different chili recipes, the members voted on their favorite chili. All attendees served as judges, taking samples scooped from each separate pot and then evaluating and voting for their first, second and third preference. Of course, our President, Mike Hodson, created some fun and confusion by labeling one of the chili pots #7 (skipping #6), so lots of people were asking about it when they voted. While the votes were being counted, everyone chose from a tempting assortment of desserts and awaited the announcement of the winner of the much-coveted Lady Scoville Trophy. Terry explained to several new members how our trophy came AUSPUFF AUGUST 2O17

into existence. In 1912, Wilbur Scoville devised the Scoville Organoleptic Test, which rated the heat pungency of chili peppers. So in 2010, Jim & Terry modified a recycled tennis trophy to include some Porsche parts as well as adding a chili pot, apron and wooden spoon to the female figure that tops the wooden base. This became our first-place trophy for all future chili competitions and was designated the “Lady Scoville Trophy” to honor Wilbur Scoville for his valuable contribution to the art of chili making. Mike Hodson made a special presentation to Randy & Sue Kinsling to thank them for holding this enjoyable occasion at their property. Mike then announced the three winners of the cook-off and presented each with a prize. Of course, the chef who comes in first also has his or her name added to the Lady Scoville Trophy.
Our generous hosts for the day Sue & Randy Kinsling
Everyone had a relaxing, fun afternoon visiting with friends and new members and went home full of delicious food. Those who made SBR’s 21st annual Chili Cook-off an overwhelming success included our hosts, Randy & Sue Kinsling; the six chili servers named above; and the set-up team of Jim Brown, Kenny Brundrett, Mike Hodson and Ted Lighthizer. Kenny Brundrett also served as our club photographer for the first time. We truly appreciate all the support and assistance provided by our volunteers to make this activity so successful! =

The outstanding cooks for 2017 are: First Place, Terry Middlebrook; Second Place, Bob & Kathy Carey; Third Place, Anita Banke. Terry was ecstatic as this was her first time landing in the top spot. She did state that her husband, Jim, added some additional ingredients at the last minute to help zest up her chili, so he deserves some of the credit. Jim has won first place many times over the past years.

The primary emphasis of The Tire Rack Street Survival® program is a “hands-on” driving experience in real world situations. We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. Students are given two hours of classroom training interspersed with a series of driving exercises with a coach while driving their own car. Students practice various braking and avoidance exercises using a variety of cone configurations, and they practice controlling their cars on a wet skid pad. Challenging courses are created in a controlled area to allow the students to experience abnormal car behavior and then learn the proper way to handle the new situation. This provides the students with useful skills to help avoid accidents and to learn how to keep their cars under control in a skid. The students will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in. They’ll learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves.

Welcome Aboard The silver splendor
now reserved exclusively for PCA’s Santa Barbara Region
Saturday, November 11, 2017 It’s a roundtrip train ride from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo in a beautiful double-decker train car from a bygone era - The Silver Splendor! Enjoy fantastic views of some of California’s last original native coastal landscapes: the legendary surfing beaches of Hollister and Cojo-Jalama, Point Conception, the massive rocket launch sites at Vandenberg Air Force Base, historic Honda Point, marine, avian, terrestrial wildlife and much more. Portions of the rails run adjacent to the historic trails etched by Spanish explorers Gaspar de Portola and Juan Bautista de Anza on their epic journeys through Alta California. Bring a picnic lunch and plan on a fun, relaxing day riding the rails on the superbly restored dome car - The Silver Splendor. Our privately owned, vintage railcar is a pleasurable remembrance of American passenger trains from the ‘40s and ‘50s. The dome car is pulled by Amtrak on 1761 North and 1790 South. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Actual travel time is about five hours with a 10:00 a.m. check-in for tickets at the Santa Barbara station with return to Santa Barbara at 4:30-5:00 p.m. The stop in San Luis Obispo is approximately 50 minutes. When reboarding at the SLO Amtrak station, passengers will switch levels so all can enjoy different views.

A Visit To Adamson House in Malibu STORY & PHOTOS BY REM LAAN
On arrival at the Adamson House, three docents took our group on a tour of this whimsical abode. Completed in 1929, this Spanish Colonial Revival-style home is on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a California Historical Landmark. It is situated on a beautiful point of land where Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean. Today, this spot is a very popular surfing location. The Rindge family, whose daughter built the residence, once owned 17,000 acres and 20 miles of coastline in Malibu. The structure
combines a mix of Spanish and Moorish influences with incredible displays of decorative tiles, hand-carved doors, painted frescos and lead-framed bottle glass windows. To procure the tile, the Adamson Family started Malibu Potteries. It is truly an amazing building in a fabulous location. After the 90-minute tour, the grouped walked over to Malibu Beach State Park for a picnic lunch featuring sandwiches from Cantwell’s Deli in Summerland. A variety of salads were also provided along with much bottled water as it was a very hot and sunny day. RUF organizes between four and six events per year, usually held on the third Thursday of the month. RUF is a great way to make new friends in PCA/SBR. Our trips are casual and are usually limited to 30 people. RUF events are not listed in Der Auspuff, so if you would like to be added to the mailing list, please contact Rem Laan at remmert.laan@gmail.com =

n Tuesday, June 13th, 30 RUFians (Retired and Unemployed Folks) met at the Camarillo outlet mall for a run through the Santa Monica Mountains followed by a tour of the Adamson House in Malibu and a picnic lunch at Malibu Beach State Park. For those of you who are not familiar with them, the roads that crisscross the Santa Monica Mountains are an absolute blast to drive. The 37-mile trip took an hour and ten minutes, so you get the idea. It’s unbelievable how much fun you can have at 30 mph!
