The President’s Column

Der Auspuff Changes

W

MIKE HODSON

e humans, as well as most creatures, are quite resistant to change. For me, as the card-carrying OCD poster child, any suggestion of the dreaded “c” word brings on the beginnings of a panic attack. Routine, structure, continuity and security are all potentially thrown out the window. Why can’t the world stop right now so that I won’t have to think or react or adapt? Most times, the reality of change is much different.

As we have witnessed over the years with Porsche cars, change has been inevitable due to changing regulations throughout the world. Contrary to expectations, the world did not end with the dawn of radiator-equipped 911’s. While some may still carry the banner of purism, it is difficult to argue the fact that today’s 911’s are orders of magnitude superior to those of yesteryear. For us in PCA Santa Barbara Region, our beloved Der Auspuff monthly magazine has been an anchor in a sea of change. Over the years, our “newsletter” has evolved from a simple mimeographed flyer into the beautiful, 36-page, full-color, award-winning publication created and edited by John Alfenito for the last nine years (!). Earlier this year, John announced that he would be retiring as Editor at the end of calendar year 2017. Once again, the world was in danger of ending. However, cooler heads prevailed, and an alternate plan was discussed, debated and finally decided by the PCA Santa Barbara Board of Directors.

The crux of the discussion centered around the fact that printed publications everywhere on the planet are following the path of the dodo bird to extinction and are being replaced by electronic communications. Der Auspuff simply could not continue indefinitely as a printed publication due to the substantial costs involved for printing and distribution. The question quickly became not if Der Auspuff was to be discontinued in printed form but, rather, when? All of us on the Board were very hesitant to go from 12 printed and distributed issues per year to zero. Such a strategy was unacceptable to us, and we felt that it would be unacceptable to our members, advertisers and sponsors. Therefore, we chose the path of compromise. Beginning in 2018, Der Auspuff will be printed and distributed on a quarterly basis. All members will receive regular communications via email that will supplement the printed magazine. The electronic communication will feature timely news and events, plus provide information on upcoming activities. The printed magazine will still feature and highlight our events with the excellent copy and photography that we have come to enjoy. Let me emphasize that these decisions were not taken lightly and were agonized over by the entire Board for months. For myself personally, replacing print media with electronic media forces me to enter the 21st century, dragging my feet and kicking and screaming the entire way. That’s my emotional brain talking. Logically, rationally and economically, our chosen path clearly shows the wisdom of the Board. Evolution, not revolution, is the best way forward. PCA Santa Barbara Region respectfully asks for your understanding during this transition. Thank you for your support.

Our generous hosts for this year’s Progressive Dinner - Barbara & Jim Spencer (left) and Toni & Oscar Briones (right).

Salads and lots of appetizers at Jim & Barbara Spencers’ home

Desserts galore on the patio at Oscar & Toni Briones’s house

I

On Saturday, September 23rd, 88 SBR members met in Goleta at the beautiful home of Jim and Barbara Spencer. We were delighted with the wonderful assortment of salads and appetizers, including Caesar and spinach salads, chicken teriyaki and spicy meatballs, chicken and cilantro wontons, and shrimp. Lemonade and water were also provided to quench our thirst. Everyone enjoyed sitting in the spacious backyard and, needless to say, all the delicious food was consumed. We then departed for the second leg of our event, a four-mile drive to Pascucci at the Marketplace in Goleta. There, many enjoyed cocktails before the main entrées arrived -- these included halibut, salmon, shrimp toscano, chicken parmigiana, chicken piccata, lasagna, ravioli and eggplant parmigiana, all served with tasty accompaniments. After enjoying a sumptuous meal, we drove another six miles to our final destination, the lovely home of Oscar and Toni Briones. Oscar provided his usual expert direction to make sure everyone was able to park their cars nearby. We immediately went outside to sit on their large patio that wraps around their home and enjoyed the magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean. Guests were treated to a wonderful array of desserts, consisting of a delicious variety of cheesecakes, a decadent chocolate tuxedo cake, apple crumb cake, cookies and a large sheet cake with “SBR’s Progressive Dinner” inscribed in the frosting. Everyone enjoyed the excellent desserts, comfortable evening temperatures and company of friends. It was a perfect end to another fun-filled, memorable SBR event. The club’s sincere thanks go out to our hosts, Jim and Barbara Spencer and Oscar and Toni Briones. We greatly appreciate their generosity, warm hospitality and the sharing of their lovely homes. A special thanks to Dick Lange, our event photographer, and also to Sue Kinsling for bringing a delicious appetizer. It’s our volunteers that make our events so successful, and we truly appreciate all of you! =

SBR’s Progressive Dinner

t was a picture-perfect day, and members of the Santa Barbara Region were enjoying three of the club’s favorite pastimes: driving Porsches, eating delicious food and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow PCA members. Our region has been holding a Progressive Dinner since the late 1960s; this event traditionally includes stops at a member’s home for a first course of appetizers and salads, then on to a fine restaurant for the main entrée, with a final stop at another member’s home for dessert and coffee.

Santa Barbara Region’s 41st Annual

CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE F STORY BY TARA BRUNDRETT EVENT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

SBR President Mike Hodson, emcee for the day, welcomed everyone and announced what to expect throughout the event, including the 50/50 Raffle to support our designated charity for 2017, A Different Point of View. Desmond Warren of DSR Audio provided the perfect blend of music to get all the participants in the mood for a fun day. The judges, led by Head Judge Betsy Wadman, included Alfred Abken, Kenny Brundrett, Bill Clevenger, Michael Dolphin, Dick Douglass, Carolyn Ewbank, Barry Michaels, Steve Vining, Pat & Betsy Wadman,

Robert Watt, Jeff Waxman, Janice & David Witteried, and Albert Zamora. Assisting the judges were Timers Beeber Clevenger, Mike Hodson and Lisa Watt. The judging teams held a brief meeting at 9:45 a.m. before the call for “light dusting only” and the beginning of judging at 10:00 a.m. Participants admired the beautiful trophies in anticipation of a win and then waited anxiously for their cars to be judged. As each car was examined, a wave of relaxation began to fall upon the crowd as the attention turned toward socializing. Anita Banke, assisted by Susan Stone and Joan Yabitsu, ran the judging table, keeping track of all the paperwork and ensuring that all the scores were tallied correctly. The aromas from the buffet began to fill the air at the perfect time, and Mike Hodson made the announcement that lunch was ready. Awaiting the attendees was a very nicely presented outdoor meal of tri-tip, margarita chicken, salmon, garlic mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, steamed vegetables, fresh salad, rolls, cookies and brownies. Adding friends and laughter to the extensive and delicious menu made the entire experience exceptional. After lunch, the drawing for the 50/50 Raffle was held. Pamuela Hodson and Karen Kahn had sold raffle tickets throughout the day. The winner, Doreen Pankow, gen-

erously donated all of her winnings back to A Different Point of View, doubling the cash raised for our charity. Mike Hodson thanked concours sponsor, Walt Branscome and Santa Barbara Auto Group. Gratitude was also extended to DJ’s Catering, DSR Audio and Elings Park. All of the volunteers were recognized with appreciation for their work in making sure that the event was a great success. Some of the volunteers had been at the park since the early hour of 6:00 a.m. The much-anticipated award presentation started with Kenny Brundrett announcing the class winners and their scores, while Tara Brundrett was pleased to present the awards to each winner. Der Auspuff Editor and Photographer John Alfenito had each winner pose for a picture while Anita Banke distributed the scoring sheets. The parking team helped guide everyone off the lawn to head out and enjoy the remainder of the day. Once again, I’d like to thank all the volunteers, judges and sponsors. Without you, this event could not happen. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2018! =

or 2017, our 41st annual Concours d’Elegance moved west to a new location, Elings Park in Santa Barbara. It was still dark and the ground was covered with heavy dew when the volunteers started to gather for our initial set-up. Former concours chair Robert Watt was a welcome sight when he delivered the coffee and donuts for the volunteers. As the sun started to break through, Susan Stone and Carol Barber greeted the arriving cars and owners with smiles and made the registration process quick and easy. Bob Bassett, Michael Jacobs, Dave Stone and Larry Stoops worked together to get the 18 Judged and 10 Display cars into their designated areas. Entrants were left with plenty of time for final preparations before judging would begin.

RUF VISITS VENTURA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY

O

n September 21st, 18 RUFians met at the Barnes & Noble in Ventura for a tour of the Humane Society of Ventura County in Ojai. The morning began with a heavy marine layer blanketing the coast and even rain showers in Thousand Oaks. But by the time we started up Hwy. 33, the fog had burned off and, for the rest of the day, it was warm and sunny. Randi, our guide, did an excellent job of orienting us to the work of the Society. HSVC was founded in the mid-1930s, more than 20 years before the creation of the Humane Society of the United States. It is a non-profit organization that is heavily staffed by volunteers. Humane societies were organized to “protect animals from humans” and are mostly non-profits, whereas Animal Control Departments “protect humans from animals” and are government run. In addition to dogs and cats, HSVC takes in larger animals, especially horses that have been abandoned in large numbers because their owners could not afford the cost of hay during the

drought. The largest animals they have taken in (so far) were four bulls abandoned by a rodeo. One of the things that Randi stressed was the importance of “surrendering” pets (bringing them to the HSVC) vs. “abandoning” pets (turning them loose to be brought in by someone else). Surrendering allows the pet to be adopted more quickly and also makes it possible for the Humane Society to learn about the animal’s health history and personality so they can find the perfect new family. None of our members acquired a new family member while we were at the Humane Society, but at least two members were busy on their cell phones snapping pictures of potential future new family members. After the tour, we drove to Boccali’s restaurant for a hearty lunch of delicious food served on the patio. The Last Word

A Different Point of View As our designated charity for 2017, A Different Point of View was asked to join us at our Santa Barbara Concours d’Elegance on October 8. We staged a 50/50 Raffle on their behalf and all proceeds wound up going to ADPOV as the 50/50 winner, Doreen Pankow, generously donated her winnings back to the charity! We thank A Different Point of View for joining us to talk about their very worthwhile efforts. Shown above is the volunteer crew of ADPOV led by founder & CEO Lynn Houston (blue shirt).
