The President’s Column

Tradition of Excellence

I

t has been my pleasure and privilege to serve as your President for the past three years. Having been involved with the Santa Barbara Region for many years, I was acutely aware of how high the bar had been set before considering the position. Every one of my predecessors and all of the Board members have done a superb job of making PCA/SBR the best it can be. Their efforts have been recognized by our receiving the “Region of the Year” prize more than once. Our enthusiastic and engaged members have enjoyed widely varied activities, from autocross to zoo visits. The activities are chronicled in the award-winning Der Auspuff newsletter, edited by Mr. John Alfenito for the last nine years. Thanks to the steady fiscal discipline of your Board of Directors, our club is in a healthy financial position with adequate reserves.

MIKE HODSON

Upon taking office, it was obvious that nothing was broken in our region that needed to be fixed. I took the helm of a wellmaintained ship on a steady course with an outstanding crew. Any minor tweaking was only a management style difference based on my personality. Our Board continues to work together as a team, trying to do what is best for our members. Egos and personal agendas have no place in PCA/SBR.

I have never been a club or committee or “joiner” type. Prior to joining PCA, my experiences with organizations, including my former employers, had been less than positive. Big-picture goals and objectives were overrun by personalities, pettiness and procrastination. Kingdoms, cliques and confrontation poisoned the potential for progress. After my first Camarillo breakfast, I knew that I had found a home. Convincing Pamuela took a bit longer. Viewing the sunset of my term, as I have been for several months, the question becomes “Where do we go from here?” In my opinion, the path forward is clear: Continue on the road of success. When change is required, as it will be, practice evolution, not revolution. The stuff will hit the fan. However, remain calm and methodically consider the options. Learn from mistakes, and don’t repeat them. To all of our members, Board members, sponsors and advertisers, please accept my heartfelt thanks for everything. Your words of support and criticism mean that you care as deeply as I do. PCA Santa Barbara Region will continue to be very important in my life, although family and friends will always be the utmost priority. The tradition of excellence will carry on, and I am looking forward to a bright future. My only request is that you consider becoming more involved in PCA/SBR as a volunteer. There is no need to jump into the deep end. Try helping out in a minor position at an event. Your perspective will change as you transition from spectator to participant. The rewards are great, and they’re certainly worth the effort. Thank you again.

From The Editor’s Desk

B

ack in April when I announced my year-end retirement from the editorship of Der Auspuff, I was looking forward to this final issue. Now that it’s here, the moment is definitely bittersweet. It has been a pleasure serving as editor for the last nine (or so) years. Many of you have correctly commented that it takes a lot of work to put this magazine together every month, but it has never been a one-man job. There are more people to acknowledge and thank than I have space to allot for the purpose, but the key contributors will be named.

The people whose names appear in the masthead every month are the ones who have worked without the recognition I’ve been fortunate enough to receive. Birgitta Baker, Jeanne McNair, George North, and Chris Andropoulos never flagged in their enthusiasm to get this magazine out on time every time.

Let’s start at the top. During my tenure as editor, there have been several presidents of our region. It is important that the president and editor can smoothly work together to create, promote and cover our club’s long list of annual events. I want to say thank you to Nicolas Liakas, Dave Stone, Bill Sampson, Doreen Pankow, and Mike Hodson for their support and understanding through my 100+ issues of this publication.

So, as Der Auspuff goes from a monthly magazine to a quarterly, there doubtless will be some changes. Mike Kurreck and Carl Bell will have my support and help should they need it, but I’ll sincerely try to stay out of their way as I am very much looking forward to becoming a “regular member” of SBR again.

JOHN ALFENITO

I would also like to thank the activities chairs who have coordinated events for the club over the last decade. My special thanks to Doreen Pankow, who year-after-year came up with great ideas while always being mindful of the special deadlines that printing Der Auspuff presented.

Finally, it’s hard for me to properly thank Susan Stone for her treasured counsel and breadth of knowledge in putting this publication together. Her editing, fact-checking, second-guessing, and grammar policing most certainly allowed us to win several national awards from PCA, including the top trophy in 2015. I could not have done this job without her. Thank you, Susan!

Thank you to everyone who ever relished reading Der Auspuff and went out of their way to tell me so. I have enjoyed being your editor. Forgive the indulgence of putting my own car on the cover this month. It’s been kind of a running gag between Mike Hodson and myself that I was going to do this. I’m sure he thought I was kidding. Nope. Not joking. Thank you all, again!

OCROSS IN CAMARILLO Saturday, October 28, 2017

T

STORY BY STEVE FERRARI EVENT PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER

he Santa Barbara Region held its second autocross for this year on October 28, 2017. We had 49 drivers registered, and 13 of them requested coaches. To all who volunteered as coaches, thank you. Your advice provides so much knowledge to the newer drivers and, as a result, they have a fun day and come away with new skills.

The following club members volunteered for the event: Bob Bassett, Matt Chao, Glenn Crawford, William Griswold, Henry Hinck, Mike Hodson, Ted Lighthizer, Dan Long, Jeffrey Merrick, Joe Niederst, Doreen Pankow, Jeff Parker, Amy Smith, Larry Stoops, and Chet Yabitsu. I want to thank each one of them for giving their time and efforts to help make this event a success.

Much appreciation goes out to club sponsors Rusnak Porsche in Westlake Village and Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara for providing a complimentary preevent day of tech inspection service to our drivers.

Remember, the autocross is open to all of our members. I hope you will consider volunteering or driving in the next event. Some members have volunteered to see what AX is all about and then drive the next event. Could this be you next time? =

SBR rides the rails in vintage comfort

S

aturday, November 11, turned out to be a spectacular day for a train ride! Forty-six Porsche Club members met at the railroad station in Santa Barbara, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the train that would take us round trip with a stop in San Luis Obispo for lunch. Our adventure started a little before noon, and what an adventure it was. As the train pulled into the Santa Barbara station, we were all in awe of the Silver Splendor rail car stopped on the tracks. The car itself was very nostalgic as it was nestled in between modern Amtrak Surfliner train cars. The Silver Splendor was built in 1956 as Chicago, Burlington & Quincy No. 4735. It was originally named Silver Buckle and was part of the last two complete train sets to be ordered new in the pre-Amtrak era. It traveled over 4.5 million miles between Chicago and Denver until 1980. She was officially retired in 1981 and was auctioned off to a rail car shop owner in 1993. In 1997, the current owners purchased the car and restored it to its current operating condition as a luxurious Dome-Diner-Lounge.

“As the train pulled into the Santa Barbara station, we were all in awe of the Silver Splendor rail car stopped on the tracks.

As we all boarded the Silver Splendor, we were welcomed with champagne flutes and a bottle of champagne that followed shortly thereafter. The seating on the train was arranged as tables for four. Everyone got settled in, and the train started its journey at 11:56 a.m. We were told that the car would rock and roll, that we should relax, use the handrails as we moved around and keep our footwear on! We would be traveling between 40 and 60 MPH and were scheduled to arrive in San Luis Obispo at 2:30. The conversation and laughter was a great start to what would turn out to be a fabulous day, a real ticket to ride! As the train made its way north, we waved to Walt Branscome as we passed by the Porsche dealership at the Santa Barbara Auto Group. We toasted him with our filled champagne glasses and proceeded towards San Luis Obispo. Our journey took us past Gaviota State Park and through

all aboard the silver splendor Continued from page 17 beautiful Hollister Ranch where the ocean view was spectacular. The ocean was so calm that it was like glass. Phyllis Weaver pointed out to us that dolphins were frolicking in the distance, which added a new level of adventure to our trip. Most of the California coast runs in a general north-south direction, but along the Santa Barbara Channel, it changes to more of an east-west direction. At the western end of this channel, the coast makes an abrupt ninety-degree turn northward. This transition point, which some early explorers termed the Cape Horn of the Pacific and where mariners following the coast had to make a severe course correction, was the site selected for Point Conception Lighthouse. As we neared Point Conception, we were informed that on September 8, 1923, seven Navy destroyers ran aground at Honda Point, a few miles from the northern side of the Santa Barbara Channel. Two other ships grounded but were able to maneuver free of the rocks. Twenty-three sailors

died in the disaster. It was a very fitting story as we honored our Veterans on this Veterans Day trip. As our journey continued, the train slowed down through Vandenberg Air Force Base where we saw the Satellite Launch Complex, home of both missle and satellite rocket launches. The sight of so much history was unbelievable. This complex was used by Atlas and Titan rockets between 1963 and 2005. The two pads are currently used by SpaceX for Falcon 9 launch operations. As the train approached the Guadalupe Dunes, they seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. They are the largest remaining dune system south of San Francisco and the second largest in California. The dunes encompass an 18-mile stretch of coastline and have been home to films such as The Ten Commandments, The Sheik, GI Jane, Odd Couple II and Pirates of the Caribbean. At times, it felt like we were traveling through the deserts of Saudi Arabia. The only thing missing were the camels.

We reached our destination of San Luis Obispo where the group exited the train and had lunch. Don Dickey, our host, made arrangements with the local Italian Restaurant, CafÊ Roma, to give us a private dining experience. The location was perfect, as it was only steps away from the train. Others enjoyed their picnic lunch in a park just down Osos Street, while others decided on pork sandwiches at the Firestone Grill in downtown SLO. Everyone returned to the train station for a 4:15 p.m. departure back to Santa Barbara, but not before group pictures were taken! As the sun set over the ocean, the sky turned blood red and was simply spectacular. You could hear the oohs and ahs from everyone as they pulled out their fancy cameras, or simply their smart phones, to take pictures that many will frame. A better ending couldn’t have been written for a spectacular day on an old train car with wonderful Porsche friends. =
