The President’s Column Dear Santa Barbara Region Members, You will see the results of our 2019 election of officers in an article later in this issue. However, we also have a number of changes in appointed board positions. I would like to recognize the following former and new board members:
REM LAAN
• Autocross: After 5 years of service, Steve Ferrari has stepped down and is replaced by Glenn Crawford.
• Advertising: After 3 years of service, George North has stepped down and is replaced by Bob Clarke. In addition, Jim Brown has stepped down after 3 years as Treasurer, and Carl Bell and Mike Kurreck have stepped down after 1 year as Co-Editors of der Auspuff. We thank Steve, George, Jim, Carl and Mike for their many years of service and welcome Glenn and Bob to the board. SBR runs on volunteers like these! The board also created a new appointed position for Dealer Relations, one that already exists in many other regions. David Stone has been appointed to this position.
For 2019, our Activities Co-Chairs Doreen Pankow and Nicolas Liakas have created a calendar that includes 22 events in addition to our 24 monthly breakfasts. The calendar includes 4 autocrosses, a driver school for people interested in learning how to autocross, and several more 1-day drives than last year. Wow! You will find the firm schedule for the next three months on page 3. The tentative schedule for the full year is on page 30. If you are new to the club, or a long-time member who has not participated in many events, I encourage you to attend a Santa Barbara or Camarillo breakfast. It is a low-key way to meet interesting new people, see some beautiful cars, and learn more about club activities that might interest you. For next year, I have three goals as President of the Santa Barbara Region: • Engage more “inactive” club members in club activities. We have almost 800 primary members, but only about 200 participated in one or more club activities in 2018. • Reimagine how we communicate with members about club activities. This includes assessing the frequency, content and form of Der Auspuff, making further improvements to our website, and implementing a simple, sustainable approach to social media. • Hold at least one off-road event for our members owning Macans or Cayennes. I wish you and your families a wonderful 2019.

FOUR DAYS OF PORSCHE HEAVEN ON EARTH
Article and Photos by Ted Lighthizer

h e n a t i o n’s l a r g e s t - e v e r gathering of Porsche enthusiasts met September 27 to 30, 2018, at the world famous WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, located in Monterey County, California. Close to 82,000 faithful Porsche fans attended the Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI, an every-fouryear celebration of everything Porsche. This year’s Porsche Rennsport Reunion was held three years after the 2015 event in order to celebrate Porsche’s 70th anniversary as a sports car manufacturer. The theme of this year’s Rennsport Reunion was “Marque of Champions”. Speaking of champions, Porsche is the only marque with 19 wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, arguably one of the most difficult and demanding sports car races in the world today. The Porsche Rennsport Reunion events are a joint effort of the Porsche Club of America (PCA), the nation’s largest Porsche owners club, Porsche Cars North America A.G. and your local Porsche dealerships. Porsche fans came from all over the USA, Canada and Europe to partake in one of the best Porsche car events ever. There were hundreds of Porsche-oriented vendors to check out, daily race car driver interviews and autograph signings from the likes of Hurley Haywood, Derek Bell and Jackie Ickx, to name a few. Porsche factory drivers were on hand for ontrack demo laps in the Le Mans winning

There were over 500 different Porsche race cars either racing or on display in the paddock area, and it was a non-stop place of interest for the fans, where they
could get up close to the cars for photos, talk to the race teams and if lucky, get an autograph or two from their favorite drivers. This year featured seven different Porsche car race groups competing all weekend long. The Porsches competing on-track included: 904 6cyl, 906, 910, 907, 908, 909, 917, 911 (up to 2.5liter), 911TR, 911ST, 914, 914 6cyl., 911 (over 2.5liter), RSR, 3.0 RSR, 2.1 Turbo, 934, 935, 936,924 GTS, 924GTR, 550, 550A, RSK, RS60-6, 2000 GSGT (Dreikantschaber), Abarth Carrera 4-Cam, 356, 904 4-Cam, 956, 962, GT1, WSC, RS Spyder, 964,993, 996 and finally 997 GT Cars. Besides all the great racing from the Porsche cars listed above, this year’s Porsche Rennsport Reunion featured Porsche tractor races on both Saturday and Sunday. It was a real hoot for the fans to watch the field of fourteen
or so Porsche tractors and drivers do a Le Mans running start for both races and race to Turn 3 from mid straight-away. Friday afternoon featured a Concours d’Elegance on pit lane showcasing over 100 different vintage Porsche race cars, which the fans got to see up close and also take photos. Porsche owners also were able to drive free parade laps on track during the lunch hour all weekend long, thanks to the efforts of the Porsche Club of America (PCA) co-hosts of this year’s Rennsport Reunion VI. I’ve now attended three Porsche Rennsport Reunions back to back, and this year’s reunion was the best ever and truly Porsche Heaven on Earth, if only for 4 days.

Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and the Porsche 919 Hybrid race car. Top speeds for the race cars at start/finish was 147mph for the 911 and a screaming 190 mph for the 919. There were also demo laps from the famous Porsche 917s driven by Mark Donahue and Brian Redman in the 1970s, now completely restored to Concours condition. Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG and son of Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, who built the first Porsche sports car, drove the original 356 “No. 1” roadster during the Exhibition laps of Porsche Racing history.

RUF Tours USCG Station Channel Islands Harbor Story and photos by Craig Chambers On September 13, and again on September 27, 2018, 20 Retired and Unemployed Folks (RUF) in the PCA/SBR club participated in tours of the Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, CA. Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Edgar Cousin and three other service members were kind enough to host two station tours for a close-up look behind the scenes of an operational Coast Guard facility. It was a real eye-opener to many of the RUF members who attended, one of them mentioning that he’d passed the Coast Guard facility “500 times” on his boat but never realized the full scope of the duties and responsibilities of the station. Kudos to the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard, whose motto is Semper Paratus, meaning “always prepared”. The hosts were very helpful, courteous, impressive and informative – they went all-out to make sure the group saw everything there was to see. Following the tour, the club treated the USCG crew to pizza at Toppers to show their appreciation. When you are out on the water in a boat large or small, it’s good to know that they are always there, ready to respond to an emergency. If you are interested in participating in RUF, contact Craig Chambers at craigch@msn.com.

This year, the club donated $1,500 to the Unity Shoppe as part of the telethon, and on Sunday, December 9th we collected more than 75 toys at our Annual Holiday Brunch to donate to the Unity Shoppe’s Santa Toy Shoppe, where parents get to pick the toys they want to give to their kids at Christmas. It took two SUVs for my wife Sally and me to deliver all of the toys to the Unity Shoppe! There are going to be many more very happy kids in Santa Barbara come Christmas Day. Thank you all for making this possible.

On Saturday, December 8th, 2018, I had the pleasure of representing the PCA Santa Barbara Region on the Unity Shoppe Telethon, broadcast on KEYT Channel 3 from 4 to 8 pm. The Unity Shoppe is a 100-year-old community service organization that adheres to the philosophy of giving parents the opportunity to shop for their basic needs with dignity so they can take care of their own families. The Santa Barbara Region has been a long-time supporter of the Unity Shoppe, which provides food, clothing, toys and services to vetted clients of more than 300 social service agencies across Santa Barbara County.
This year, the Porsche Santa Barbara dealership donated $10,000 to the Unity Shoppe and used the telethon to introduce the new Cayenne to TV viewers. When I arrived, the Cayenne was parked on Sola Street and I met up with Walt and Shane from Porsche Santa Barbara. After a few minutes, Unity Shoppe Executive Director Tom Reed and Kenny Loggins came out to explain to us what was going to happen. It turns out that Kenny drives a Macan GTS that he purchased from Shane. The TV crew came outside, and Tom and Kenny “interviewed” Walt and Shane about the new Cayenne. Then Tom interviewed me about the Porsche club and why we support the Unity Shoppe. I also got a chance to talk about the club and our various activities for Porsche owners. After a few minutes, it was all over and the “show” went back inside.

EXPLORING THE PACIFIC COAST WINE TRAIL STORY BY NICOLAS LIAKAS PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS AND JIM BROWN (Prologue: It was a terrible week preceding our November 16 – 18, 2018 tour to Cambria, CA and our exploration of the Pacific Coast Wine Trail. On the morning of November 7, we were shocked with the news of yet another mass shooting – this time in our own back yard. The evening of the 8th forced many of us to vacate (and some to lose) our homes as wildfires surrounded our region. We all share in the grief and horror of these two life-changing events. The account that follows is not intended to ignore or downplay the tragedies, but rather to help all of us persevere and succeed in our endeavors, regardless of hardships faced.) With eyes stinging from the lingering smoke, skies gray from the ashes forced to the ocean by Santa Ana winds – and minds occupied by thoughts of sorrow and loss – 38 PCA Santa Barbara Region members were ready to seek comfort among friends who shared the same emotions. The drive north to the quaint town of Cambria began on the morning of the 16th. Before reaching their destination, the group stopped in the tiny hamlet of Harmony to visit the Harmony Cellars for the first of several wine tasting experiences planned for this trip. The population of this village is listed as only eighteen residents, so the arrival of 38 sports car enthusiasts eager to sample the wares made quite an impact. The drive continued to the outskirts of Cambria with a stop at Stolo Vineyards, where, in addition to pouring samples, the attendant explained the Stolo family’s origins in Italy and their winemaking for several generations after arriving in the U.S. After checking in at the Castle Inn at Moonstone Beach in Cambria, the search for that perfect wine resumed with visits to the Twin Coyotes Winery, Moonstone Cellars, Cayucos Cellars and the Black Hand Cellars, each located within walking distance of each other in the Cambria town center (known as the West Village). There was one more site to visit for tasting and that was Madeline’s. First, there is a tasting room to add to the list, but of greater importance was the awaiting dinner at the restaurant of the same name. The setting was elegant and the dinner exquisite. The group was offered a choice of entrée: steak fillet, sea bass or vegetarian. Salads were enjoyed before the entrée was served, and the meal was brought to a tasty conclusion with a dessert predetermined by the chef. The mood remained light by avoiding talk of tragedies and horrors experienced just a week earlier. Doreen Pankow took the group on the morning of the 17th to Montaña de Oro State Park, located just south of Morro Bay. This was the first time most of the participants had visited this dramatic location along the cliffs of Los Osos township. To say it is spectacular is an understatement. The rough waters of the Pacific crashing on the cliffs, abundant wildlife (including buzzards)

and a wide variety of plant life combined to impress the group with each step along the 2.5 mile round-trip hike, forming more lifetime memories for everyone. A brief lunch stop in Morro Bay was followed by a driving adventure along Old Creek Road from the bay to eventually connect with Peachy Canyon Road into Paso Robles. Both of these roads are magnificent routes requiring Porsche-driving skills to cleanly navigate. The spirited drive terminated at the famous clock tower in the center of town. Some shopping, some snacks, some ice cream – and then confusion as to the subsequent destination. Most returned to Cambria, while several drove on to Mission San Antonio de Padua on the edge of Fort Hunter Liggett in southern Monterey County. Eventually everyone managed to regroup in time for dinner at Robin’s restaurant in the East Village of Cambria. The buffet dinner offered salads, steak fillet, salmon and a couple of side dishes. The setting was a spacious outdoor patio serviced by a dozen portable heaters, which were appreciated for the warmth and comfort they provided. On the morning of Sunday the 18th, time was up for this particular tour. While most planned a direct route home, some stayed a little longer to visit other sites in town and travel along Highway 1 up to the Ragged Point Inn. Regardless of timing or destinations, all had a great time appreciating friendships and shared experiences.

Story by Tara Brundrett
d’Elegance 42ND ANNUAL
I
n 2018, the PCA Santa Barbara Region’s 42nd annual Concours d’Elegance returned to the prestigious Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks. As the sun started to rise, a family of deer walked across the grounds. Glenn Crawford arrived early with warm doughnuts and coffee – a welcoming sight, since the heavy dew was sure to result in soggy feet. Glenn then proceeded to the main gate to meet everyone as they arrived. Darryl Haus and Rem Laan helped guide people to the entrance and the lawn. The amazing trio provided warm smiles and greeted the arriving cars and owners, moving them through registration process with grace. Bob Bassett, Michael Jacobs, David Stone, and Larry Stoops lead a group of volunteers to ensure the 31 cars were set according to Division in addition to the 17 Display cars. The entrants appreciated the time to complete the final preparations before judging began. Jim Brown, emcee for the day, welcomed everyone and announced what to expect throughout the day. Desmond Warren of DSR Audio provided music to set the mood for a rocking good time. The judging team was led by Head Judge Dick Douglass and included Alfred Abken, Carlos Cardenas, Billy Clevenger, Michael Dolphin, Carolyn Ewbank, Jeff Forsythe, Ted Lighthizer, Barry Michaels, Doc Pryor, Sina Saeidi, Pat & Betsy Wadman, Robert Watt, Jeff Waxman, David & Janice Witteried, Dave & Linda Yerzley, and Albert Zamora, all of whom attended a brief meeting at 9:45 a.m. At 10:00 a.m, “light dusting only” was announced and judging began with the assistance of timer/runners Beeber Clevenger, Kathi DeLuca, Denise Michaels and Lisa Watt.
salmon, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, salads, and fruit, followed by cheesecake, cookies, and an assortment of pastries. The remarkable display of food rivaled the incredible views of the country club scenery. After lunch, the awards were set out and final ballots were submitted for the People’s Choice awards, making the anticipation of a win a reality. Rem Laan, club President, thanked the sponsor, Rusnak/Westlake Porsche. Gratitude was also extended to DSR Audio, the Zone 8 Concours Chair, the judges, runners, scoring team, volunteers, emcee, photographers, the Goodie Store, all the participants that entered their cars, and Concours Chair Tara Brundrett. A moment of silence was held in honor of Kenny Brundrett. Over 50 volunteers, some who started at 6:00 a.m., made the event exceptional. The highly anticipated award presentation started with Tara Brundrett announcing the People’s Choice winner, Dave & Linda Yerzley. As each class winner was announced, they posed for a picture and picked up their score sheets. As the activities concluded, the parking team guided everyone off of the lawn to enjoy the remainder of their day. All the volunteers, judges, and sponsors are to be commended for making this terrific event a success. After the participants had departed and the grounds once again became serene, another family of deer was sighted, perhaps a harbinger of the Concours’s return to this amazing venue in 2019.
Participants admired the beautiful cars and waited anxiously for their cars to be judged. As each car was examined, a wave of relaxation began to fall over the crowd as the attention turned toward socializing. Jeanette Bassett, Sue Kinsling and Susan Stone once again stepped up to manage the scoring table, keeping track of all the paperwork and ensuring that all the scores were tallied correctly. Noon couldn’t come soon enough – once lunch was announced, the lure of the clubhouse prevailed. Awaiting the attendees was an amazing meal of steak, chicken, DE R

Autocross Without Cones Story by Glenn Crawford Photos by Ted Lighthizer
With the change of seasons this year came a change of venue for autocross. Participants usually attempt to drive around little pumpkin-colored cones as quickly as possible on the Camarillo airport’s Northeast unused section of runway, but because of their current hangar construction project, change was necessary. Thus, on Saturday, October 20th, PCA Santa Barbara Region held its first autocross event at Jim Hall Racing Club, hidden behind the big Haas Automation complex in Oxnard, CA. At 7:00 AM, a flood of 30 happy Porsches and their drivers were ready to go under beautiful clear skies and a little warm Santa Ana breeze. Volunteers and drivers all coordinated registration, tech and set up to prepare for the 8:15 AM drivers meeting, followed by a quick track walk and the first car out about 8:45 AM. Some familiar with karts and the tracks around Southern California had seen or driven on this track before in one or another of its configurations. Jim Hall built the track for karts years ago but has just recently opened it up for some special cars and groups after realizing that the track is shaped ideally and capable of handling it. In this event, drivers were treated to a nice, smooth, clean surface, plenty of straights, varying grip and a host of different radius turns. Practice consisted of all three groups (Green, Orange and Yellow) each getting three sessions of four runs before three timed runs in the hot afternoon sun. How did a new Turbo S stack up against an old 356? You’ll have to look at the results but it was surprisingly close!

Highlights included: a great viewing deck, a good amount of shade, no cones to knock down or pick up, few work assignments, lots of socializing, teasing, storytelling and laughing. Lunch BBQ was catered by Aaron from Q-time BBQ and, as always, was delicious! The climax of the day was Bill Thorpe’s spectacular run exploring the gators, slightly shortening the track, catching a little air and turning in the Fastest Time of the Day in the 2000 silver and orange Boxster! Drivers were enthralled with the track and the event. Amy Smith commented that “the ‘no cones’ made it much less confusing, especially as a novice, it allowed me to focus more on the important things - when to brake, accelerate, and find the best racing line. Jim Hall was an excellent host and personally made me feel welcome, which I appreciated.” Larry Hendrickson liked the short track with lots of turns, adding that “the track surface is excellent as are the corners. The braking and turn in markers are very helpful. The two straights gave enough opportunity for speed. Turns are tight but not too. Great course for Boxsters and Caymans.” So much fun was had by all that this just might become a regular event! A special thank you to Steve Ferrari, Rem Laan, Jeff Parker, Jeffery Merrick Dan Bleskey, Gary Oldstead, Bob Bassett, Larry Stoops and Joe Niederst for volunteering for the day, and to Ted Lighthizer for taking and sharing great pictures.

HOLIDAY BRUNCH At the La Cumbre Country Club
STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW PHOTOS BY GARY KRUEGER
S
anta Barbara Region members enjoyed this year’s annual holiday brunch at the stately La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara on Sunday, December 9. It was wonderfully decorated for the season with garlands, wreaths and lighted trees. The tables in the elegant dining room were set with sparkling glasses, silverware and festive centerpieces, and the dining areas had views of the beautiful gardens and lawns. Over one hundred members arrived with unwrapped toys to be delivered to Santa Barbara’s Unity Shoppe to help bring joy to less fortunate children this holiday season. The toys were piled high on tables alongside the awards for retiring board members and door prizes for our members. Once the majority of participants had arrived, a sumptuous brunch was served with limitless champagne mimosas. The brunch presentation was superb and included breakfast items, prime rib, salmon, and a variety of salads and desserts. Needless to say, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delicious fare and the conversations with our fellow members and friends. A Sunday brunch is the perfect time to celebrate friendships developed with other members and to recognize members’ efforts, so following the meal, President Rem Laan went to the podium to acknowledge those who have contributed a lot of time to make the club so successful. Sponsor Walt Branscome from Santa Barbara Auto Group was thanked for their ongoing financial support and for all the continental breakfasts they’ve provided at the start of many of the club’s events. Rem provided a brief overview of SBR’s activities in 2018 and thanked all our members who served as coordinators, volunteers and participants and made these such successful and fun events. The 2018 Board members were recognized for their service to the club. It was great to see that eight Past Presidents were in attendance! Suzi Sheller announced the Man and Woman of the Year and presented the perpetual awards to Doreen Pankow and Nicolas Liakas. Rem then announced the 2019 officers: Rem Laan as President, Barbara Spencer as Vice President, Suzi Sheller as Secretary, Howard Rubenstein as Treasurer and Nicolas Liakas and Doreen Pankow as Activities Co-Chairs. Bob Clarke will become the new Advertising Chair and the rest of the Board appointees remain unchanged from 2018. It was finally time to find out whose raffle ticket would be drawn to participate in the upcoming PCA Treffen Santa Barbara in April 2019 -the delighted winners were Frank & Jackie Rayas. To thank our members in attendance, dozens of great door prizes, donated by Santa Barbara Auto Group, Premier Coach, Schneider Autohaus and Jim Hall Racing, were given away. Rem closed the event by thanking everyone for their support and stating that he is looking forward to being club president for another exciting year in 2019. DE R
