I

REM LAAN

t is hard to believe the year is already half over. My wife, Sally, and I moved to California six years ago and it’s certainly been the greyest, wettest, and busiest six months we’ve experienced. I am not complaining about the rain, but it certainly was not the great Porsche driving weather we have come to expect!

In addition to our Camarillo and Santa Barbara Breakfasts, we have 10 other events scheduled between now and the end of the year. I encourage you to review the flyers in this issue and to check out “Down the Road” on page 27. We have something for everyone whether it be day drives, a concours, or purely social events like our Holiday Brunch. Register early as our events tend to fill up fast.

recently retired husband, Jim. Barbara did a great job leading our support of PCA’s recent Treffen Santa Barbara, but it certainly was a lot of work! Barbara’s presence will be missed by me and the other members of the Board. Fortunately, Randy Fishwick, our Webmaster, has volunteered and was appointed by the Board to serve as Vice President until the next election. Randy will also continue in his current role as Webmaster. I encourage you to check out www.pcasb.org as well as our Flickr and FaceBook pages for up-to-date news about Santa Barbara Region activities. The “fuel” for our Region is volunteers. I encourage you to consider volunteering to run an event or serving on the Board. For more information about serving on the Board, please contact Mike Hodson (aitchpm@gmail.com). Nominations for a new President and Vice President for 2020 are now open. We need you! Drive Safely!

New this year is an off-road event for Macans and Cayennes that I am leading on Saturday, September 28. If you have one of these great Porsches, I hope you will consider joining us. The off-roading will not be too “serious” and the views will be staggering. If this event is a success, we plan to double the number for next year. I am sorry to report that Barbara Spencer has resigned as Vice President due to a very active travel schedule with her

From The Editor’s Desk

A difficult consequence of doing this production bi-monthly is trying to keep the content timely and therefor interesting. This issue contains reporting on events that occurred in May but out of necessity published in the July/August publication. When that happens, how is content kept fresh and vibrant?

NICOLAS LIAKAS

One answer is the photography. The gorgeous scenes of our drives, the festive display of gatherings, and the photos of new or recent members to our region. Whether the reader is a 45year member or 45 days, there is always interest in the images of those who participate, their cars and their adventures. We are blessed to have professional and/or expert hobbyists among us that provide us with the images that excel in our publication. The following deserve special recognition. Gary Krueger, Steve Geldman, Randall Fishwick and Dennis Power grace our pages in every issue. At times we solicit the assistance of Rem Laan, Jeff Waxman and Dan Lindsay, as well as others. Thank you for your hard and artistic input. In the next issue, the September/October version, I plan on spelling out the effort that it takes to manage and supervise the numerous events our region sponsors every month. It may not be easy, but it is much fun and very rewarding. Who knows? It may encourage you to step up and take charge.

PLEASE, NO MORE APPLICATIONS, POSITION FILLED! SBR NO LONGER SEARCHING FOR SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR We are pleased to report that SBR member Robert Watt has stepped up and accepted the challenge! Robert is also our co-chair for the Concours d’Elegance. Thanks, Robert, for your great support of our region’s efforts.

This is the July/August 2019 issue of our region’s magazine, der Auspuff. Once again, we are blessed to receive so many news articles, reports on our special monthly events, and many miscellaneous topics. What if we . . . What if one consequence of a very creative and active drive and touring program by our various Activities Chairs during the past several years is that we have visited, explored and enjoyed many sites and destinations in central and southern California and neighboring states? In fact, many such destinations have been repeated – some more than once.

Destination: Squaw Valley, CA; Headquarters The Village at Squaw Valley

When: Late May early June, 2020

Highlights: Lake Tahoe (North and South); Truckee, CA; Donner Party State Park; Donner Lake; Reno and Carson, NV; among others. Duration: Five nights, six days. Destination: Durango, CO; Headquarters in town.

When: Late May early June 2020

What if the time has come to determine if SBR members are interested in programs that entail more than three or four days and thus extend the geographical range of our explorations?

Highlights: Durango/Silverton R.R.; Telluride; Ouray; Mesa Verde; Cyn de Chelly; Four Corners; Petrified Forest

What if we offered activities that fit this definition and objective? For example, let’s consider some hypothetical offerings.

Drop us an e-mail to nicolasliakas@gmail.com and tell us if something like the above would be of interest to you. Remember, an expression of interest at this time is not a commitment to participate; simply a response to assist us in the planning of such a program if the respondents so indicate. Please respond by July 31, 2019.

When: Late May early June 2020

Highlights: Antelope (Slot) Canyons; Colorado River Horseshoe Bend; Glenn Cyn Dam; South Shore Lake Powell. Duration: Four nights, five days.

Feel free to bring other possible destinations or suggestions to our attention. Thanks in advance for your response. JULY/AUGUST 2019 AUSPUFF DE R

Story by Doreen Pankow | Photos by Randy Fishwick & Rem Laan On Memorial Day Sunday, 27 adventurous SBR members driving 14 Porsches took a leisurely drive from Santa Barbara to the CA-1 in search of the Lompoc flower trail. We arranged the Porsches by color… alternating red, white and blue cars, looking patriotic as we drove along the freeway. Rain was threatening, but it didn’t deter us from our drive. In fact, we had mostly cloudy skies with just an occasional sprinkle. At the east end of Lompoc, we drove up and down several farm roads to enjoy the color from the fields of flowers including larkspur, stock, alyssum, delphiniums, sweet peas, and marigolds. We stopped by one display of flowers for some photo shots. Our Porsches did get a little muddy on these roads and we dodged quite a few potholes, but it was worth it to see all the flowers in bloom. The flower fields generally bloom from April through September. They rotate every year, and are scattered throughout Lompoc Valley. Some can be spotted west of Old Town Lompoc, along Central Ave. from Floradale Ave. to Union Sugar Ave. Over the past several years, the number of fields dedicated to flower production has substantially decreased and many of the fields have been converted to the growth of vegetables.

The flower industry in the Lompoc Valley dates to the early 1900’s. Climate is a critical factor in cultivating flower seeds and the Lompoc Valley is said to have the most consistent temperature climate in the world. Approximately 80% of US cut flower production comes from California and over half of that comes from Santa Barbara County. The group departed Lompoc and headed east on Purisima Rd to Drum Canyon Road. Most of our members had no prior experience driving on this less well known road, and although very scenic, the last four miles narrowed to a one-lane road and was quite challenging. We arrived at the Los Alamos County Park and enjoyed our picnic lunches on tables covered with red, white and blue tablecloths. The group greatly enjoyed the company of other SBR members as well as the “bring-your-own” goodies that were graciously shared. It was a great way to spend a Sunday, driving back roads and enjoying the camaraderie of our Porsche friends. Since this was the Memorial Day Weekend, our region expressed its appreciation to the five military veterans in attendance by waiving their fees: Steve Brown, Ted Lighthizer, George Rux, Ray Seider and Frank Thomsen. Thank you for your service!

The new Macan showcased at Rusnak Westlake Porsche Story and photos by Nicolas Liakas The 2019 version of the very popular Macan SUV was on display on June 15, 2019 at Rusnak Westlake Village showroom. Approximately three dozen patrons of the dealership attended the special invitation event and got an up-close look at all the new features and technical advances. According to the Porsche.com website, the new model from the sports car manufacturer features a new three-liter V6 turbocharged and when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the new Macan S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, which is 0.1 seconds quicker than the previous model. The new Macan S enjoys all the product innovations of the latest generation Macan model range. These include the LED lightbar at the rear and the new, fully networked Porsche Communication Management system with a 10.9-inch touchscreen.

Rusnak Porsche Cars & Coffee Gathering Rusnak Westlake Porsche hosts a gathering of Porschephiles on the third Saturday of every odd-numbered month. The latest edition was on May 18, 2019, and dozens of SBR members, among others, took part. A

classic Santa Barbara Region event: the 75-mile drive on some legendary bends, loops, and curls, perfect for Porsches, followed by a flavorful lunch at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Valencia. Next comes Spunky Canyon and Green Valley (cue the “Dueling Banjos”). The final leg to Valencia is Bouquet Canyon Road, a stretch steeped in California ranching history and named from the stories of “El Buque” (Spanish for “the ship”) by a French sailor turned settler and vaquero. Lunch in Valencia will feature garden salad, deep-dish pizza, and a nonalcoholic beverage of your choice. We’ll check in at 9:00 a.m. in Moorpark at the Target parking lot, 832 New Los Angeles Avenue, just west of CA-23. Departure time is 9:30 a.m. sharp. R.U.F. Travels to Pompeii, SBR Style Story and Photos by Craig Chambers On Thursday, April 11, the PCAS/SBR R.U.F. group (Retired & Unemployed Folks) took a guided tour of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and its Pompeii exhibit in Simi Valley. Our Library docent tour guide, Bill Statnzos, was informative and entertaining as the group went through the library’s many sections. “It was much more historical than political,” said Craig Chambers, R.U.F.’s event planner, “an amazing and enlightening historical journey back in time that was enjoyed by all.” The Pompeii Exhibition was a reminder of what a large-scale seismic event like the Mt. Vesuvius eruption on August 24, 79 A.D. can do to a city and its population. It’s estimated that Pompeii was ultimately

buried under more than 18- feet of volcanic ash & debris from the eruption which claimed about 2,000 lives. The exhibit’s videos, wall posters and displays went into detail about how the citizens of Pompeii lived, what they ate, how they were entertained, what they were doing when Mt. Vesuvius erupted, and even a section on eroticism which was said to be highly prevalent in Pompeii and the Roman Empire at the time.

TAKING THE BACK ROADS INTO OJAI AN INCREDIBLE PORSCHE DRIVE ENJOYED BY MANY

Reported by: Steve Geldman | Photos by: Dick Lange & Gary Krueger On an overcast, but beautiful Saturday April 27th, months of waiting for this fun Porsche drive-day had finally arrived. Having a handful of members making this their first SBR drive, the added pressure was on to make this a memorable one. Steve Geldman, event organizer and this author, may have appeared to have gone overboard with his detailed Pre-Drive Instructions and Driving Directions, but this sold-out event of 94 people and 52 Porsches proved the extra effort paid off well. No one missed a single turn during the approximately 50-mile drive! Our morning started by meeting at Premier Coach Auto Collision in Camarillo. Premier is a Porsche Approved collision and paint repair facility and our gracious host to begin our day. Owner Cliff Sullivan, along with his lovely wife Kimberly and their friendly staff opened their arms to members as Porsches filled their parking lot at 9 a.m. Awaiting us was an incredible spread of delicious food, coffee and juices to get our own motors running. During our hour or so there, we were also treated to a tour of their entire facility to see the magic of transforming a damaged car back into showroom quality. But that’s not all. Premier also handed out a raffle ticket to each member and later held a fun raffle presentation before we departed. Many SBR members walked away with very cool gift baskets as well as bottles of fine wine. That was just the start of our terrific day. After Geldman’s quick pre-drive speech of do’s and don’ts, we departed a little after 10 a.m. for our backroads trek to Shangri La – otherwise known as Ojai, referencing the natural environment of this health and spirituality-focused region. The area was also made famous by the 1937 movie, Lost Horizon.

The words Porsche and backroad are synonymous. We had a terrific drive through the agricultural areas of Santa Rosa Valley, Moorpark, Balcom Canyon and into Santa Paula. From there we hitched onto Hwy 150 and drove through beautiful greengrass vistas and traveled past huge ranches as were approached our destination. In the lead car, looking in the rearview mirror, one would see a freight train length of following Porsches. SBR member and photographer, Gary Krueger, strategically stationed himself alongside Hwy 150, just before we arrived into Ojai, to capture our ‘train’ driving by. As we arrived at Boccali’s Pizza & Pasta restaurant, their courteous staff was there to quickly direct us into the parking area and avoid us from blocking Hwy 150. After all, we’re talking 52 Porsches! Awaiting us were many picnic tables to accommodate nearly 100 PCA guests. How much fun it was to see so many club members enjoying the company of others, share their drive experience as well as enjoy delicious salad, garlic bread, pasta, pizza and beverages. As we concluded what ended as one of our best attended SBR drives, some decided to head into the town of Ojai and enjoy shopping and the relaxed culture as it is known. If any PCA member ever falls into the unfortunate situation of an injury to your precious Porsche, or any manufacturer for that matter, we highly recommend considering Premier Coach for repair. When in Ojai, don’t miss the opportunity stopping at Boccali’s for lunch or dinner. If in season, don’t forget to order their Strawberry Shortcake for dessert! Boccali’s is in a unique Ojai location having its own cool vibe. Thanks to everyone who attended and those who assisted me in making it happen!

A PORSCHE ADDICTION AND CONFESSION Report and Photos by Bill Hallier My Porsche addiction began in 1965. I was driving a 1956 VW bug and uncovered a wrecked 1958 356 A Coupe that I bought for $600. After repairs, I had my first Porsche. While participating in a gimmick rally in Southern California, I met my future wife who was driving a Bug-Eyed Sprite. My car (pictured top, right) was a 1600 c.c. Normal, a real fun car to drive. This picture was taken in Solvang in April 1966, on my last road trip to Laguna Seca, just before my induction into the Army. Six years later, in 1972, while going to school in Santa Barbara, I managed to rescue a metal flake purple 1959 Coupe (ugh! It had lime green carpet) that was then owned by someone in Hollywood with terrible taste. I thought that with school, work, and family I was cured of what I now know as PAS (Porsche Acquisition Syndrome), but in 1990 I fell off the wagon and purchased a 1981 911SC and joined the PCA. Not yet cured, in 2001 we bought a 1996 993 and again in 2007, a new 2008 911 C4 Targa. An addiction is normally a bad thing, but I felt pretty good and so in 2018 we acquired a Macan GTS, and then overdosed with the 2015 911 C4 Targa in the picture. In 53 years, Solvang has not changed much, but as you can tell, the addiction continues. I understand that recovery from addiction requires a 12-step program. If so, I still need to acquire another five Porsches -- if that’s how it works.

ANOTHER RECORD BY PORSCHE

Photo and Text provided by Porsche.com

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has set a new production car lap record at Road America, completing the 4.048 mile road course with its 14 turns and multiple elevation changes in just 2:15,17 minutes. 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans class winner David Donohue took to the wheel of the 911 GT2 RS and only needed two laps to do so, underscoring not just the track capability, but also the approachability of the car. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS also recorded an impressive lap time of 2:18,57 minutes at the same track after only a few laps. Once again, both cars took to the track on road-legal and Porscheapproved Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 tires. Racelogic was on-site to record and validate the lap time, vehicle telemetry, and video utilizing the VBOX Video HD2 system. April 29, 2019

SBR’S CHARITY OF THE YEAR: BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER CONEJO VALLEY Reported by: Lorraine Crawford Creating a Network of Support for Academic and Life Success The mission of BGCGCV is to enhance the lives of young people and their families by providing a positive environment that cultivates academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character, and citizenship. BGCGCV has rapidly expanded over the years to meet community needs and is one of the top 100 Boys & Girls Clubs out of the network of 4,000-plus independently run Clubs in the country. It runs nine clubs co-located at elementary and middle schools in Conejo Valley and Las Virgenes Unified School Districts. It serves 12,000 youth, ages 5-18, within the communities of Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, and Calabasas. BGCGCV supports over 4,000 registered members annually and hosts an average daily attendance of over 1,000 youth every day of the school year, and over 500 youth every day in the summer. During the school year, students explore

their passions and interests through programming in five core areas that are essential for their success: Character & Leadership Development, Education &

Access for All BGCGCV and its supporters believe that access to quality programming with safe, supportive environments is a right that all children have. For that reason, clubs have been strategically located on public school campuses and transportation is provided from schools located nearby club sites serving as many children in the community as possible.

Career Development, Health & Life Skills, Arts, Sports, Fitness & Recreation.

Program affordability is maintained through fundraising. While many of the families that choose to send their children to BGCGCV are able to pay for programming, just as many families are not able to. For this reason, BGCGCV makes scholarships available so that no family that needs its services is turned away.

Summer programming focuses on reversing the “brain drain” that can happen quickly to students in the summer and includes sleep-away camps, traditional day camps, and specialty camps such as travel, STEM, theater, dance, and archery.

The organization is broadly supported by elected officials, community leaders, teachers, school administrators, parents and community members. In addition, close to 400 community members support member youth through volunteering at clubs and at events.

IMPRESSIONS AFTER VISITING THE PORSCHE MUSEUM IN STUTTGART, GERMANY Story and Photos by Gary Krueger If you are a Porschephile or simply an admirer of exemplary architecture, then while in Europe “you gotta go” to the Porsche Museum. There, you can view the history of the Porsche family and its contributions to automotive engineering and design. Follow the personal trials, tribulation and honors of Ferdinand Porsche for the years pre-1948, then explore the era of post 1948 through current models. There is also a big plus for anyone that appreciates art and design, especially when it comes to the structure that houses the museum’s collections. Experience the beauty of it all from the outside, and then follow through with the guided tour (advance reservations required).

GIMMICK RALLY PRODUCES SUPER SCORES! Story by Jerry and Pam Lasnik Photos by Randall Fishwick and Nicolas Liakas

The Gimmick Rally began as it often does at Rusnak Porsche in Westlake Village, on the morning of June 22, 2019, where we were treated to a delicious breakfast. After an opportunity to enjoy the company of other rallyers, it was time for the official photo-op and the pep talk/instructions/ warnings presentation by Jerry Lasnik, half of the team of Jerry & Pam. This was the sixth Gimmick Rally we have created, so we were fairly confident it would run smoothly. I assured the eager bunch, this time including a fair number of Rally Newbies, that this was not a race. I even wore my brain anatomy shirt for inspiration. Slower is better, so as to not miss the clues around them on the route. These would include anything from street signs, billboards, store and highway signs, even signs pointing to hospitals and libraries. At 9 o’clock, finally, it was the time of reckoning, the moment where we handed them the packet of clues as they exited Rusnak to embark on their rally adventure, encouraged them to have fun, but not to use their phones to look up answers. The end of the route took us to Dos Vientos Community Park. Tablecloths on the tables, then fingers crossed that no one would call me in a panic (We’re lost!”) A few couples came in very early, having decided to do their own route, in order to avoid any marital discord on the real route. I can respect that. After a bit over two hours, the rest of the crowd came trickling in and sharing their critiques about the “very hard” questions and the funny clues. For a Lasnik Gimmick Rally first, I had the group stop at the Chumash Museum in Westlake and actually get out of their cars to do a plant identification experience. The time came to find the winners of the rally. So, as I went through all 110 answers, each team corrected its own paper. There were a few “What about this alternate answer?” Then the occasional “Wait a minute!!” from Nick Liakas. I did get a few groans from the otherwise civil crowd when I insisted that “Where rabbits learn to hop,” is obviously “Conejo School Rd.” Or, was there a “Bloody battle here?” reasonably referring to “Red Lakes Place.” The clues were multifaceted and diverse. From, “Who attends this school?” (Little Scholars Preschool) to some political queries like, “Lied to the FBI” (Flynn Rd.) and “JFK presidency” (Camelot.) They didn’t like “Native Sons serving lettuce” (Golden West Vegetables.) But, they knew about “clothing optional” being Hot Tubs. Hmmmm. What does that say? Not surprisingly, in general, this tough and very intelligent group came through with flying colors. The scores were impressive, as has been a continuing trend with participating club members over the years. The three winning teams were as follows: First Place ($50 Amazon gift card) - Gary Goodman & Amy Smith Second Place ($30 AGC) - Jeff & Gina Moore Third Place ($25 AGC) - Jim & Barbara Spencer. June 22nd was another chance for Porsche Lovers to have a fun day, driving some different roads, challenging their fine brains, enjoying some good food and sharing a few laughs with other spirited folks. And, so, ended our sixth Lasnik Gimmick Rally. Hope we gave folks a fun day. Maybe, we’ll just do it again next year.
