The President’s Column GREAT NEWS…I am pleased to report that 2019 will not be the end of the Santa Barbara Region. Barry Carson has graciously volunteered to run for Club President for 2020, as have Rod Hersberger for Vice President and Tom Sutphen for Secretary. Howard Rubenstein, Treasurer, and Doreen Pankow, Activities, both standing for re-election, round out the slate. Please join us in welcoming these candidates for office.
REM LAAN
Ballots and biographies of the nominees are included elsewhere in this issue of Der Auspuff. The ballots will also be distributed at the November Camarillo and Santa Barbara breakfasts and by email. Your vote is important - please vote! In the last few months the Board has been considering significant changes to the Club’s Bylaws and you will be asked to vote to approve these changes on the ballot. The full text of the proposed Bylaws can be found at www.pcasb.org. The major changes are: • Provide more specificity to Club policies and procedures based on PCA’s best practices guidelines for Region bylaws.
• Provide greater transparency regarding Board decisions and the Club’s finances. • Change the term of elected officers from one (1) to two (2) years with a limit of two (2) terms. This will hopefully minimize succession challenges like we experienced this year. I encourage you to read the new Bylaws and vote to adopt them when you vote for the 2020 slate of officers. Remember, your vote is important - please vote!
Board of Directors Meetings SBR’s Board of Directors meets on the second Wednesday of every odd-numbered month at 6:30 P.M. at the GOLD COAST VETERANS FOUNDATION, 4001 MISSION OAKS BLVD. CAMARILLO, CA 93012 Member attendance and participation are encouraged.

brought it on myself – anxiety, stress, depression, and then jubilation. What happened? It all has to do with my purchase of the brand new 992 C4S. The order was placed in late February. Negotiations concluded; there was happiness all around with the Rusnak reps (Keith Goldberg, G.M. and Carl Bell, sales magician) and me. It was a build order that included everything I ever wanted in a new Porsche. Things went great! Now, the wait!
NICOLAS LIAKAS
The original estimated delivery date was set as late July/early August. Not bad, right? So, I plan a trip (with another SBR couple, Dick and Linda Lange) I always wanted to take. Fly to Chicago, return home by driving the length of Route 66 – in a rental SUV. Yuck! Flight set for September 19 – leaving plenty of “gap” to receive delivery of the 992 before setting forth on the driving adventure. Wrong. Ah, spoke too soon. Silly me. The revised delivery target date was changed to late August. Still, o.k., yes? Not again! Another change in the target date, this time to early September. What can a guy do? But now, I start to worry that the 992 may come only a day or two before Chicago, or worst yet, after landing at O’Hare.
Yup, you guessed it. We departed on the 19th of September. The 992 was now somewhere on a San Diego dock. Wouldn’t you know it? Scream out loud! AAAAAHHHHH! I was crossing the continental U.S. (or 2/3 of it) with my mind on the 992 covered with ocean salt water, sitting unprotected in the sunlight, exposed to the elements. Rust? On September 27, the long-awaited text message from Carl arrived: IT’S HERE! I One problem: I was in Gallup, N.M. I took possession of the 992 on the 28th. The kid in me resurfaced. The joy returned. Driving home from the dealership took forever; that happens when you do 20 MPH and stop at every intersection, all traffic lights (whether green or red did not matter) and road signs obeyed to extremes. (I never understood why so many drivers were blowing their horns as they passed me; I thought they were admiring the 992.) I must emphasize that all the missed target delivery dates were caused by CARB, California Air Resources Board, taking forever to issue clearances for the release from the San Diego Port the new Porsche model. To their great credit, the folks at Rusnak could not have been more helpful and eager to smooth my now visible anxiety. I was kept informed at all times, and that made the wait palatable. The car was kept safe and secure, always locked and lovingly protected. What more could a guy want?

SBR’S 43rd ANNUAL CONCOURS d’ELEGANCE Report by Tara Brundrett | Photos by Gary Krueger, Steve Geldman, Randall Fishwick, John Alfenito Our 43rd annual Concours d’ Elegance returned to the prestigious Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village. As the volunteers gathered, we admired the full moon. We were thankful when the sun started to rise and brought the prospect of a warm day. Tom Marshall was a welcome sight bringing warm donuts and coffee. By the time things got underway, 300 individuals passed through the country club gates to compete, view, judge or just hang out with friends. Bob Clarke passed out raffle tickets to the volunteers who arrived early, then went to the main entrance gate to pass out raffle tickets to anyone arriving in a Porsche. Steve Doll, Tom Marshall, and Rem Laan helped guide people to the lawn. The amazing team of Susan Stone and Jeanette Bassett provided warm smiles and greeted the arriving cars and their owners, moving them through the registration process with grace. Bob Bassett, Michael Jacobs, David Stone, and Larry Stoops lead a group of volunteers to ensure the 32 judged and 34 display cars were positioned according to concours rules. Jim Brown, emcee for the day, greeted everyone and announced what to expect throughout the day. Keith Goldberg, General Manager of Rusnak Westlake Porsche, donated three raffle prizes. Desmond Warren, of DSR Audio, provided music to set the mood for a rocking good time. Shutter Bus provided a photobooth for unique and fun mementos. Dick and Jane Douglass were signing up the future generation of Porsche owners with a special model Porsche for PCA Juniors. Participants admired the beautiful cars and waited anxiously for their cars to be judged, then a wave of relaxation began to fall upon the crowd as the attention turned toward socializing. Steve Hoskins and Robert & Lisa Watt managed the scoring table, keeping track of all the paperwork and ensuring that all the scores were tallied correctly. Noon couldn’t come soon enough as the lure of the clubhouse grabbed our interest when lunch was announced. Awaiting the attendees was an amazing buffet of steak, chicken, salmon, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, salads, and fruit, finished by cheesecake, cookies, and assortment of pastries. After lunch, the awards were set out and final ballots were submitted for the People’s Choice awards, making the anticipation of a win a reality. Rem Laan, President, thanked Rusnak Westlake Porsche, our sponsor. Gratitude was also extended to DSR Audio, Zone 8 Concours Chair, Zone 8 Representative, photographers, Goodie Store, all the participants that entered their cars, and Concours Chairs Tara Brundrett and Robert Watt. Over 50 volunteers, some started at 6:00 a.m., made the event exceptional. Immediately following lunch, Tara Brundrett started the highly anticipated award presentation. As class winners were announced, they posed for a picture and picked up their score sheets. The People’s Choice award winner was Russell Chang in his 2019 GTS Touring. Carl Bell (with Rusnak) conducted the raffle drawing. The winners were Tara Brundrett, Michael Dolphin, and Blake Goodwin. We offer our thanks and appreciation to all the volunteers, judges, and sponsors. Without them, this event would not happen.

Registration is now open at CCCR DE Buttonwillow Nov. 15, 2019 info on Nov 15, 2019 (577580) | MotorsportReg.com To generate more interest in the DEs, we are offering a “Track Tour” session. If you want to get your car out on the race track but are a little intimidated by the experience or are worried about the safety of your car, the Track Tour is perfect for you. You cannot have a safer track day than this! The Track Tour will have pace car you will follow with a maximum 60 mph allowed. Corners are less than track speed but fast enough to have some real fun. No passing is allowed, helmets are not even required, instructors are not required, tech is not required. You may have passengers in the car with you so bring your friends or family. Want your children to drive? If they are 18 years or older it is allowed. If we have extra instructors that day, you can arrange to have one in your car to help you during your drive time.
You can drive any car, it does not have to be a Porsche, does not have to be fast. Want to take the 356 or the 912 out and not worry? This is the time and place to get your feet wet in the track experience. You may find you love it and want to try the full experience of spending the day with other drivers, watching and learning what your limits are, what the car’s limits are. You have a fantastic car, use it how it is meant to be used. It will be one the greatest days of your life. You will have a minimum of four run sessions at twenty minutes apiece. The cost is $240.00 for PCA members, including a tee shirt. The fun starts in the afternoon on the 14th, the day before our scheduled event, with registration and dinner at the track. For all of you who want to have the full track experience, please register under PCA Member Registration PCA, or Non PCA Driver if you are not. If you have less than four days track experience, we will have instructors available on a limited basis. Dinner on the 14th is available to everyone. If you are an instructor, please register as soon as possible so we can accept novice drivers as they sign up.

Want To Be a Concours Winner? Here’s How! Story by Tara Brundrett | Photos by Randall Fishwick
I welcomed everyone and thanked Lavaggio for hosting us for 9 years in a row. Dustin Troyan, Marketing Director, gave a brief overview of the outstanding services offered by Lavaggio. Gabe Gutierrez followed and gave a demonstration on a car that we pretended was a Porsche, including the 4-step process that Lavaffio performs for preserving paint. Dustin also explained the difference of the newer paints and different wax techniques, showcasing again how Lavaggio provides its special touch to the “Art of Auto Detailing”. As our appetite for detailing and prepping cars grew, Lavaggio delivered when we headed inside and discovered that a wonderful lunch was waiting for us. We all enjoyed the healthy wraps, salads, fresh fruit, chips and especially the cold water provided by Lavaggio’s bistro (not to mention the much-appreciated air conditioning).

The afternoon session kicked off with a great interactive conversation about what to expect from a Concours, including the different divisions and areas that can be judged on a car. Special thanks go to Carolyn Ewbank, Amy Smith, and Robert Watt for their expertise on a judge’s perspective. Next, I shared different tips and tricks that have been successful for us, including the different brushes, Q-tips and towels that you can never have enough of when prepping, including the various uses for chopsticks and the proper way to care for your microfiber towels. Glenn Crawford gave a suggestion for windows from his diving experience. Our appreciation goes out to all the participants and the wonderful staff at Lavaggio for making this an educational and pleasurable occasion. See the report elsewhere in the issue of Der Auspuff on this year’s Concours at Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village that was held on October 13. It was another unforgettable Santa Barbara Region event.

A beautiful day greeted the participants for the detail clinic held on September 14. We were grateful that it was only 85 degrees because, for the last few years, it’s been over 100. Fourteen participants in 11 Porsches, including a couple first-time participants and some Zone 8 Judges, gathered at the beautiful grounds of Lavaggio in Agoura Hills to learn about all things Concours.

SBR’s First Off-Road Excursion
Report by Rem Laan Photos by: Gary Kruege & Rem Laan
Santa Barbara, CA. 9/28/19. Twenty (20) hardy souls in eleven (11) cars met for a light breakfast and coffee at Porsche Santa Barbara, hosted by club member and Porsche Certified Brand Ambassador Walt Branscome and the whole Porsche Santa Barbara team. We then set off for a long and what turned out to be a mostly foggy drive to explore some of Santa Barbara County’s smallest and roughest roads. No 911s or Boxsters here. Macans and Cayennes are now Porsche’s two most popular vehicles, so we thought – why not create an event just for them? Not so easy. Despite thousands of square miles of wilderness, there are not very many dirt roads open to the public. I started by checking out West Camino Cielo. It was closed for most of the spring and summer due to damage from last winter’s rains. When it re-opened it was barely passable. Heavily rutted, only a foot of clearance on either side between my SUV and heavy brush, lots of fallen rocks on the road, and no place to pass another vehicle. After some back and forth with the US Forest Service, I tried Nordhoff Ridge Road, just off the 33 north of Ojai. Better. Only 20 cars per day allowed on this stretch of road - permits required. The first couple of miles up to the ridge were the hardest;
steep and rocky, but passable. Not too much heavy brush. Once I reached the ridge the road improved and the views all the way out to Point Mugu and down to Ojai below were fabulous. Ultimately, I decided against it as a first effort and so we ended up on Figueroa Mountain Road, East Camino Cielo and Gibraltar Road; without doubt some of the most beautiful climbs and descents in California. Our drive started in earnest in Happy Canyon where the road got progressively narrower and we passed ranch after ranch with young calves and their mothers along the side of the road. As we gained elevation, we entered the fog at about 1,000 feet. We climbed and climbed but did not see the sun again until near the peak of Figueroa Mountain at about 4,000 feet. As soon as we started descending, we were back in the fog until we reached the base of the mountain. Next we stopped for lunch at the rustic Cold Spring Tavern, an old Wells Fargo stagecoach stop, where most of us feasted on large portions of various kinds of red meat (tri tip, venison, buffalo, and beef). After lunch, we crested San Marcos pass and turned onto East Camino Cielo. By this time the fog had mostly cleared, and we were treated to great views of the Santa Ynez Valley, including all of Lake Cachuma, and the Pacific Ocean from Santa Barbara to the Channel Islands. Finally, we dropped down Gibraltar Road into Santa Barbara and the end of the tour. What did I learn? Macans and Cayennes are fearless. My Macan is much more capable than I am. It’s amazing how one can scare oneself when driving three (3) miles per hour! Feedback from the group about our drive was very positive and we plan to schedule a second off-the-grid excursion next year.

GIMMICK RALLY Saturday, March 21, 2020
This is fun! Our drive will take us on some roads just perfect for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of attentive driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here -- only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. A bonding experience for you and your navigator. The top three teams as determined by the highest number of correct answers will be our prize winners. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen will come in handy, too. Meeting time is 8:00 a.m. at Porsche Santa Barbara, 402 South Hope Ave. There will be complimentary coffee and pastries awaiting us. The rally will end at beautiful Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura where we will enjoy a great barbeque lunch by Q-Time BBQ. The total cost is only $35 per person, including lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee. These are always popular events. RSVP early by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check.
