The President’s Column Hello Santa Barbara Region members. As we close 2019 and prepare to usher in 2020, we are also undergoing a change in the Board. My name is Barry Carson and I will be assuming the President’s role. Rod Hersberger has graciously accepted the position of Vice President, Tom Sutphen Secretary, and returning Howard Rubenstein as Treasurer and Doreen Pankow as Activities Chair. I have been very impressed with how well run this Club is and all of us on the board will strive to maintain that standard in the coming year. Along with the election of officers, the revisions to the Club by-laws were also passed. One of the things SBR does so well is social events and concours - and we will continue to do so. There has also been a lot of interest in adding some more motorsport-oriented events into our calendar and to this end a lot of discussions were had concerning this topic at the Zone 8 President’s Meeting in November. It turns out that some of the other regions (Central Coast, Riverside, Grand Prix) have developed significant expertise in the running of motorsport-oriented events. Since SBR has lost (at least for the moment) it’s ability to host the popular autocross events, it makes sense to reach out to these other regions and tap their expertise. I know for my part that I am interested in participat-

BARRY CARSON

ing - a track day sounds good to me. It may also attract new members which is another important aspect. There are also going to be some off-road activities in the upcoming year so all the Cayenne and Macan owners can get a feel for what their vehicles are capable off. A little something for everyone, then. If you have ideas for events you’d like to see on the calendar, or better yet, lead one yourself, please let me know. In closing let me reiterate that this club can’t do what it does without the help of volunteers. Come out to the breakfast meetings, get involved. Give some of your time, particularly if you are retired. You won’t be disappointed. Happy New Year to all.

Board of Directors Meetings SBR’s Board of Directors meets on the second Wednesday of every odd-numbered month at 6:30 P.M. at the GOLD COAST VETERANS FOUNDATION, 4001 MISSION OAKS BLVD. CAMARILLO, CA 93012 Member attendance and participation are encouraged.

From The Editor’s Desk

I

love road trips. I have experienced dozens of them. Some were cross-country, others were regional, and all were memorable, for one reason or another. Still, there are two incidents that have stayed with me, one involving a Porsche and the other future marital bliss (hopefully).

NICOLAS LIAKAS

The first occurred almost 20 years ago. I set off on my own (Olga was in New York) with Moab, Utah, as my destination. I drove my 1997 993S Coupe, a beautiful and great fun car. On the trip home, I ventured down to Prescott, Arizona. I parked along the main square, across the street from the courthouse, in front of a historic saloon. As I exited my car, I noticed a man and a young boy (about 10) standing behind the car. The boy was asking his dad what kind of car this was. The dad told him it was a Porsche, but that was the extent of his knowledge on the subject. The boy proclaimed that this was the first Porsche he ever saw – they were from the fields of Nebraska. I invited both to take a closer look. I opened the doors and explained the instrument panel and told them why the center dial (the tachometer) was so much bigger. I ran through the six-speed stick shift. But the priceless reaction from the boy was when I opened the engine compartment – in the rear, of course. The boy’s eyes doubled in size, as they did when

the rear spoiler was activated. Questions, questions, questions. I will never forget the boy’s wonderment, his dad’s affection for him, and their expression of thanks for the private showing. My second unforgettable experience happened in Chicago this past September. Olga and I were there to start our Route 66 adventure. We walked to Grant Park on the lakefront to view the amazing Buckingham Fountain. As we approached, Olga turned left to experience Lakeshore Park, but I continued to the fountain. As I approached, a young man (he looked like he might have just graduated from Navy Seals school) and a very attractive young lady came to the fountain. He positioned her in front of the water feature and took out his cell phone to capture the moment. I asked him if he wanted me to take a picture of the two of them together. He gave me the phone. Their world, and mine, were about to change, for the good and forever. As the fellow approached his date, I got the phone camera ready to take the customary shot. As I did so, he got down on one knee and took out of his pocket what was obviously a ring case. He removed the ring and faced his date, telling her she was the love of his life. I was so excited, and must have taken at least 30 pictures, everything from his kneeling, the presentation of the ring, his professing his love, her jump into his arms, and yes – she said yes! I don’t know who they were, but they gave me a memory of a lifetime – and I think I did the same for them.

Jalama Beach Picnic Run

Report by Doreen Pankow Photos by Gary Krueger, Jim Brown and Nicolas Liakas

We turned south on CA-1 and then west on Jalama Road for another 14 miles of twisty, fun-filled Porsche roads. Near the end of the drive, we were able to see miles of pristine coastline and enjoy breathtaking views as we came down the hill into the Jalama Beach County Park. The land near Jalama Creek was once a Chumash Indian settlement named “Halama.” In 1943, 23.5 acres of land owned by Atlantic Richfield Oil Company was donated to the County of Santa Barbara and the park was formed. Jalama Beach is a respite from typically bustling seaside parks, yet offers many conveniences, including the Jalama Beach Store and Grill, which is home to the

“World Famous Jalama Burger.” It was a beautiful sunny day at Jalama with temps in the high seventies and a comfortable cooling breeze. We were lucky it was a low surf day so that we were able to find parking for all of our Porsches. We spread the picnic tables with tablecloths in the dayuse area and quickly covered them with picnic baskets. Several members opted to order Jalama Beach’s delicious burgers at the store. Everyone enjoyed their lunches and fun conversation with their friends. Wine and other treats were shared among members and new acquaintances were made. The newest members on the trip were Jack & Mattie Oehmke, who just joined in October, Aaron Berk, who joined in September, and Steven & Joyce Bloom, who joined in August. We were delighted to have these new members participating! Once everyone had their fill of walking on the beach and enjoying the magnificent views, we left for home.

A group of 85 members driving 45 Porsches departed from the Santa Barbara La Cumbre Plaza parking lot on October 26 and headed north on CA-154 to enjoy another beautiful day driving the back roads of Santa Barbara County. In Solvang, we turned onto Alisal Road, driving down a winding country lane past Nojoqui Falls Park. From there we took the 101 North for a short stretch before heading west on Santa Rosa Road past vineyards and several wineries.

Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country Tour and Lunch Report by: Una and Stan McNight Photos by: Gary Krueger and Nicolas Liakas Santa Barbara County is home to six recognized American Vinicultural Areas (AVAs) that make world class wines of distinctive character. The largest concentration of wineries is in the Santa Ynez Valley. It is a long east-west corridor with very cool temperatures on the coast that become progressively warmer inland. Several varietals do well in this versatile appellation. It has long been a favorite touring destination of the PCA-SBR. On November 16, a group of 40 Porsches took 80 club members through the Santa Rita Hills AVA on Santa Rosa Road with its hallmark Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; Ballard Canyon AVA with its unique Rhone varietals; and to the edge of Happy Canyon AVA well known for its Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. While their owners enjoyed a continental breakfast generously provided by Porsche Santa Barbara, the 40 cars waited patiently outside admiring each other’s classic model designs. The 992 newcomers, still housed in the showroom, were all the talk among the proud line. In perfect sunny weather, the 40 Porsches, some with their tops down, set out on Highway 101 north, winding through Highway 1, and down Santa Rosa Road. The first stop was Brick Barn Wine Estate just off Hwy 246, where they parked along the vineyard lanes. Hospitality Manager Ellen Mitchell and her friendly tasting room staff served award-winning wines while members lounged in the garden and enjoyed the winery’s collection of Ferraris. Once refreshed, we were eager to be off. A drive through the beautiful Ballard Canyon Road, around Los Olivos, and through Ballard Township, brought us to the Vincent Vineyards and Winery. The handsome and colorful Porsches rested on the estate grounds of the winery’s private chateau residence. Owners Tony and Tanya Vincent personally greeted everyone and provided a delicious lunch prepared and served by their family and wonderful staff. A specially decorated PCA-SBR cake was a nice surprise to finish the meal and wine. The trusty 40 Porsches, none of which had complained or been naughty all day, were rewarded with a fine drive home and promises of more adventures to come. 2019 SBR Holiday Brunch and Annual Meeting Report by: Rem Laan Photos by: Gary Krueger & Nicolas Liakas On Sunday, December 8, 110 members and their guests packed the La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara for the Region’s 55th anniversary Holiday Brunch and Annual Meeting. As always, the La Cumbre Country Club provided cozy holiday surroundings with a delicious buffet meal and bottomless mimosas. The event is a time to recognize and thank the club’s many volunteers as well as our sponsors and advertisers. Sponsors and advertisers in attendance included Walt Branscome from Porsche Santa Barbara, Henry and Paula Hinck from Schneider Autohaus, Robert Watt (realtor) and Neil McAuliffe (insurance). We were also had six past presidents and 12 new members in attendance. 2019 was an especially busy year because the Region hosted PCA National’s Treffen Santa Barbara in April. Approximately 250 PCA members from all over the US and Canada came to Santa Barbara to participate in the event. Led by Barbara Spencer, Doreen Pankow, and Nicolas Liakas, our club provided more than 60 volunteers to stuff goodie bags, assist with registration, supply the car wash, manage the drive start area at the Music Academy of the West and plan and lead 12 drives over two days. Thanks to all of our volunteers, Treffen was a great success.

Suzi then announced that Doreen Pankow (Activities Chair) was voted Woman of the Year, adding to her well-deserved recognition as PCA National Enthusiast of the Year. Rem Laan, outgoing club President, was voted Man of the Year. The event ended with a drawing for the many door prizes provided by our advertisers: A $250 gift certificate for wheel powder coating or refinishing from Wheel Concepts A gift certificate for ceramic coating from Ghost Shield Five $100 gift certificates for a car wash or detailing from Lavaggio A $300 gift certificate for service from Schneider Autohaus Two holiday gift baskets from Premier Coach Four holiday wine gift baskets with yoga mats (to use after drinking the wine?) from Porsche Santa Barbara Six large 2020 Porsche calendars from Porsche Santa Barbara

In addition, we had 24 monthly breakfasts and 19 other events, including autocross, concours, one-day drives, social events, multi-day events, and even our first off-road event. SBR’s Charity of the Year, recommended by member Lorraine Crawford, was the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Conejo Valley. The club will be presenting them with a donation early next year. In addition, we collected more than 100 toys at the brunch for the Unity Shoppe’s Santa Toy Shoppe in Santa Barbara.

New members in attendance were the primary beneficiaries of the door prizes as four of the six couples won. It has been a pleasure to serve as your president these past two years. In closing, let’s all have a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR and continued success with our club!

David Wittereid, our Zone 8 Rep, and his wife Janice, joined us to recognize the Club’s 55th anniversary and to present a framed plaque commemorating the event as well as a letter from Craig Kugler, PCA National Treasurer, identifying the many ways in which the Region exemplifies PCA’s ideals. Two members are leaving the board this year – Suzi Sheller, Secretary, and Mike Hodson, Past President. Each received a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant as a thank you from the Club. Suzi Sheller, Secretary, then announced the election results. With 122 votes cast, the following officers were unanimously elected to the Board: Barry Carson, President; Rod Hersberger, Vice President; Tom Sutphen, Secretary; and Howard Rubenstein, Treasurer. The new bylaws were adopted by a vote of 115 to 1. This was one of the highest voter turnouts in recent years.

Rusnak Porsche Gathering Reveal of the 992 Report by Nicolas Liakas, Photos by: John Alfenito A special, by invitation only, celebration of the new Porsche 911 – the 992 - took place in the evening of Saturday, October 26 at Emory Motorsports in North Hollywood. Rusnak/Westlake Porsche and Rusnak Pasadena Porsche invited over 400 clients and PCA members to an exclusive launch event as they unveiled the eighth reincarnation of the world’s most iconic sports car. (With 443 horsepower it can accelerate from zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds. It has a more polished, more technical take on its unmistakable profile and a technology-loaded 10.9-inch touchscreen that compliments its classic cockpit styling.) The first 400 guests to arrive received an exclusive, limited edition 911 gift, but first they enjoyed complimentary cocktails & hors d’oeuvres. They were needed to compensate for the very heavy traffic to reach the destination, and for the remote parking that necessitated shuttle bus service. Nonetheless, it was a festive and memorable evening.

Ok, you have a Porsche. You love it. Canyons and backroads are really fun. You know you can have even more fun but you don’t want a glovebox full of speeding tickets or be on a first name basis with your local law enforcement. The Santa Barbara Region and Zone 8 have the solution

Become an Aspiring Track Driver We’re going to do a static prep class for you! Come out and get prepared to go to the next level. We are not talking about wheel to wheel racing: just helping get you and your Porsche going on a real race track . . . fast. We’ll cover everything you need or want to know right up to the driving! Just sign up and we’ll get you ready: http://msreg.com/Mar282020PCASBR (The $10 PCA/SBR activity fee will be collected when you register onlne.) In our classroom session you’ll learn a few things in no particular order like: What is an Autocross (AX)? What is Driver Education (DE)? How do I classify my car? What is a Tech Sheet and what do you do with it? Is my car ready? How do I enter? Is it expensive? Where do I stay? Who will be there? Will I get points? Where do I go? Who is in charge? Is it safe? insurance? Do I need special equipment? What do I bring to an event? Where do I park? Do I need a helmet? Are there instructors/ coaches available? Can more than one person drive each car? How do I find out about other Zone 8 track events? After our classroom session answering all those questions and more, we’ll walk out to the parking lot to do a mock tech session on each participants car! This class will be followed up with two club weekend trips to southern California race tracks to practice what you’ve learned. When: Saturday March 28, 2020, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Where: Crawford Wealth Management, 2555 Townsgate Rd. Ste #300, Westlake Village, CA 91361 * Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

GIMMICK RALLY Saturday, March 21, 2020

This is fun! Our drive will take us on some roads just perfect for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of attentive driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here -- only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. A bonding experience for you and your navigator. The top three teams as determined by the highest number of correct answers will be our prize winners. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen will come in handy, too. Meeting time is 8:00 a.m. at Porsche Santa Barbara, 402 South Hope Ave. There will be complimentary coffee and pastries awaiting us. The rally will end at beautiful Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura where we will enjoy a great barbeque lunch by Q-Time BBQ. The total cost is only $35 per person, including lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee. These are always popular events. RSVP early by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check.

O

ur springtime weekend adventure has something for everyone! Spectacular poppy fields, giant wind turbines, an inviting town founded in 1860, hometown delights, and a true railroad marvel! Our drive begins in Fillmore, winds through San Francisquito Canyon, and offers stunning views of the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve area before heading up Tehachapi’s back roads to get lunch and up close and personal with the area’s friendly giants. Following lunch, enjoy guided access inside the Historic Victory Garden Wind Project: 900 acres and home to some 280 wind turbines of varying types and sizes installed over the last four decades. We’ll drive the ridgetop, enjoy panoramic views, and peek inside a modern 300-foot wind turbine. The decomposed granite roads are well graded and maintained; expect some dust, but also a wealth of wonderful photo opportunities considering the vast and stunning views of the area’s 4,600 turbines from this 5,000 ft. vista. Next, we head to the sweet community of Tehachapi, nestled in mountains on all sides. Check into the hotel, mosey into the Visitor Center, shop for antiques, discover

the city’s murals and the Tehachapi Museum, or find Skylark Glider Port and schedule a glider ride in the area’s perfect soaring conditions. Later in the day we’ll meet up again to explore Cummings Valley, tour a local winery, enjoy no-host wine tasting, and in the evening have a delicious hometown dinner at a historic packing shed while enjoying live foot-stomping music. Sunday morning, we visit the Depot Railroad Museum before our drive to view the Tehachapi Loop, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and one of the seven wonders of the railway world. Our farewell lunch is at Tangleweed Farm, a family-owned, organic farm in the Tehachapi hills. Enjoy the rest of your afternoon in the area or join the PCA return procession via backroads and through Castaic, ending in Fillmore. Cost: $160 per person includes lunch, appetizers and dinner on Saturday, the train museum tour, and lunch on Sunday, plus the SBR activity fee. Holiday Inn Express group rate is $125 per night plus tax. Call (661) 822-9837 and request the “Porsche Club” rate. Rooms in Tehachapi fill up VERY quickly – Book now! Questions? Motoring to Malibu Through the Santa Monica Mountains Saturday, May 16, 2020

A

memorable drive takes us through the Santa Monica Mountains, 52 miles on famous roadways such as Decker Canyon, Mulholland Highway, and Stunt Road. Cresting the range at nearly 2,400 ft., the vistas are beautiful—Calabasas and the Santa Susana Mountains to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The quick decent takes us to Pacific Coast Highway and Casa Escobar, our lunch destination across the street from Malibu Pier. The old Malibu Inn marquee still appears on the Casa, where Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and many famous bands once played. At our own private seating area, we’ll relax on their outdoor patio where a Mexican style buffet, including nonalcoholic beverages, awaits us. A no-host bar is also available.

T

he day starts at 9:00 a.m. in Newbury Park at Ghost Shield headquarters, 1168 Tourmaline Drive. A light bite and refreshments will help start our engines. Ghost Shield representatives will give us a tour of their stunning facility and explain how they apply Paint Protection Film and its benefits. Departure time is 10:00 a.m. sharp. Event cost is $45 per person, which includes lunch and the activity fee. There is plenty of parking at the restaurant but, being located across the street from the pier and beach, there is a separate valet fee of $5, whether we park our own vehicles or not—after all, it’s Malibu. The finish time is 1:00 p.m. and then you may explore the area at your leisure. There are two ways to reserve your spot and pay. The cutoff date is May 9, 2020. 1. Preferred--register and pay with credit or debit card on the secure Motorsportreg website: http:// msreg.com/motoring2malibu 2. Mail a check payable to PCA/SBR with the form below to Steve Geldman and, to hold your spot, let him know at steve@imagephotomotorsports.com or 805-279-0466.

There’s a First Time for Everything Report and Photos By: Randall Fishwick On Friday, November 15th, the PCA California Central Coast Region held a Driver’s Education Event at Buttonwillow Raceway. I drove there a day early to enjoy the invigorating drive over Route 33 through the Los Padres National Forest. After checking in at a local motel in Buttonwillow, I headed to the raceway to meet and have a pleasant dinner with several CCCR members that evening. The event was organized by DE Coordinator Bob Bruington, with many other CCCR members assisting as well. Having never attended a DE before, I opted for their “Track Tour”, which was run by Barry Lockton. Perhaps like some others in our club, I was a little nervous about taking my “baby” out on the track, and the lower speed Track Tour seemed like a perfect introduction to the sport. While the “tour” was technically limited to a 60 MPH limit, the relative short length of Buttonwillow made it an exciting experience none the less. Barry discussed track rules and etiquette, as well as optimal lines through the turns, before each tour. We were allowed on the track four times for around 25 minutes to 30 minutes each. In the later laps, 60 MPH began to feel like more of an average speed, as Barry allowed us to take turns following behind him. As an added treat, I took Barry up on his offer to take me as a passenger on one of his much faster paced DE rides. From the start he offered to slow down if I “felt a bit queasy”. I’ll be fine I said, but after several laps at close to race speed, I was fighting to keep my lunch down. I finally told him we needed to slow a bit if he didn’t want me to spill my cookies on his 911’s nice interior. Barry politely obliged and cut the drive a little short. It’s funny how I never feel that way while I’m driving! It’s impossible to fully appreciate the experience of pushing your Porsche beyond the usual limits imposed on public roads without actually trying it. On a closed track groomed for speed, you can feel very comfortable entering turns quickly, without fear of getting a ticket, hitting a bicyclist, or heading off a cliff! If you’d like the opportunity to drive your Porsche closer to the limits it was designed for, I highly recommend you participate in a DE or Autocross over the coming year, I’m betting you’ll enjoy it!
