The President’s Column Time is certainly flying — by the time you read this we will be approaching the end of the first quarter of the year. 2020 is off to a good start with the addition of several new members over the last two months; a trend echoed by the National Club. SBR has already held several successful events this year, such as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Escape Weekend at Rancho Mirage, the Valentine’s Day Drive, and the Singer Vehicle Design studio tour.
BARRY CARSON
Upcoming SBR and Zone 8 events include a Gimmick Rally, a track-day ground school, and a tour to Tehachapi. For those of you looking for a more motorsport-oriented event, the Riverside region is holding an autocross at Fontana on March 29 and Zone 8 is sponsoring the California Festival of Speed in Fontana on April 25 and 26. The Festival of Speed is a large and varied event with lots of on and off-track action. Putting on the Festival requires a lot of volunteers, so please give thought to stepping up and helping out. I attended in 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly visiting the more engineering-oriented vendors. Even if you don’t
volunteer, the Festival is definitely worth attending, And, there’s always the exciting Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest highways to conquer on your way back. THE social event of the year will doubtless be the Porsche Parade in June at the La Quinta Resort in the town of the same name. This annual national gathering is a wonderful experience for any PCA member, there are events and activities for all members of the family, and this year it’s in our own backyard! Enjoy that Porsche; I look forward to seeing you at a monthly breakfast or an event!
Board of Directors Meetings SBR’s Board of Directors meets on the second Wednesday of every odd-numbered month at 6:30 P.M. at the GOLD COAST VETERANS FOUNDATION, 4001 MISSION OAKS BLVD. CAMARILLO, CA 93012 Member attendance and participation are encouraged.

From The Editor’s Desk Resuscitated Friend, at the age of 167!
I
t was the early summer of 2018 when I and six friends embarked upon a California Porsche road trip with the ultimate destination of Crater Lake in Oregon. Along the way, we visited numerous California gold discovery sites, almost got parking tickets at John Marshall’s site, shared beers at a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed country club clubhouse, and stood at the spot in the town of Downieville where the first, and last, woman was hanged in California – an act that inflamed the territory and led to such despicable acts being outlawed.
NICOLAS LIAKAS
time employee/manager/editor/proofreader/chain-smoking reporter. Files and prints were stacked two feet high. A cloud of cigarette smoke hung low from the ceiling. However, this one-woman show knew the difference between he and him, she and her, they and them, who and whom, its and it’s, and never made the mistakes so common in today’s culture. She was quick to catch and correct grammatical no-nos. She knew everyone in town, on a first-name basis, of course. In short, this was a magnificent example of home-town journalism, dripping with the cloak of history while preserving its heart and soul. It’s good to know that all is well, at least for now. The paper will continue to serve the community, and keep its readers informed of all things local. How nice.
Sierra County, where Downieville is the county seat, has one traffic light and about 300 residents. In an historic building in the heart of town, a newspaper is published weekly that traces its origins to California’s Gold Rush. With roots dating to 1853, the Mountain Messenger continued that tradition by covering current news in this gold-rush town. According to a report in The New York Times of December 29, 2019, the Mountain Messenger was to cease publication within weeks. After some 167 years, it appeared that no one wanted to continue financing and publishing it. Thankfully, a white night appeared at the last moment and saved the day! The newspaper is alive and well. I met with the publisher on that road trip and visited the paper’s office, which was staffed by the one and only full-

GIMMICK RALLY Saturday, March 21, 2020
This is fun! Our drive will take us on some roads just perfect for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of attentive driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here -- only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. A bonding experience for you and your navigator. The top three teams as determined by the highest number of correct answers will be our prize winners. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen will come in handy, too. Meeting time is 8:00 a.m. at Porsche Santa Barbara, 402 South Hope Ave. There will be complimentary coffee and pastries awaiting us. The rally will end at beautiful Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura where we will enjoy a great barbeque lunch by Q-Time BBQ. The total cost is only $35 per person, including lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee. These are always popular events. RSVP early by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Getaway Weekend Report By: Jeanne McNair & Doreen Pankow Photos by Nicolas Liakas The Martin Luther King, Jr. getaway weekend (January 17-20, 2020) began with most of the 35 participants meeting in Moorpark on a sunny Friday morning prior to our departure to Rancho Mirage. Many of us stopped first at the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, which travels two-and-one-half miles up the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon to the top of Mount San Jacinto at an elevation of 8,516 feet. We rode in a large circular tramcar with a rotating floor enjoying spectacular views of the Coachella Valley while taking the 10-minute scenic ride to the top. We enjoyed lunch in the Lookout Lounge before going outside to view the beauty of the snow on the mountains. We then drove to the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Hotel and Spa in Rancho Mirage, our residence for this three-day adventure. With its beautiful pools, brilliant flowers, and verdant grounds, the hotel offered a luxurious setting for our group to relax. That evening, we enjoyed the welcome reception buffet at the hotel’s open-air Sunrise Terrace. We were treated to a delicious buffet, including Caesar salad, assorted pastas, and delicious desserts. As always, the reception was a great way to mingle and talk with old friends and meet new acquaintances. Saturday morning, we drove our 18 beautiful Porsches to Palm Desert for a tour of the Living Desert. We were greeted by our guides and boarded comfortable, open-air trams for the two-hour tour of this amazing venue. Set on more than 1,200 acres, this is a unique zoo and botanical garden representing the desert environments of North America and Africa. We saw an abundance of animals and other wildlife, the standouts being giraffes, camels, zebras, hyenas, cheetahs and a stunning leopard. An impressive aspect of this facility is the manner in which the animals are housed and presented. The habitats are expansive and compatible with the desert surroundings and have a natural feel to them. After our tour, we went to nearby Desert Willow Golf Resort for a delicious lunch on their terrace. This property affords beautiful vistas of the extensive golf course with the jagged peaks of the San Jacinto Mountains as a backdrop. After lunch, Nicolas Liakas led us on the 1.8-mile Tahquitz Canyon loop trail where we enjoyed seeing a magnificent 60-foot waterfall gushing with water. On the way back to the hotel, some members stopped at the Porsche Next Gen Showroom in Palm Springs that opened last year. Sunday morning, we drove to Joshua Tree National Park via CA-62 through the Morongo and Yucca Valleys. After stopping briefly at the National Park’s Visitor Center, we drove out to Keys View at over 5,000 feet, where we enjoyed breathtaking views of the San Andreas Fault, Mount San Jacinto, Mount San Gorgonio, and the Salton Sea. We then drove to the Hidden Valley area where we ate our box lunches and then many of us hiked the Hidden Valley loop trail that passed through a tight boulder-strewn pass to open into a beautiful valley where rustlers used to hide stolen horses and cattle. Many members commented on the stark beauty of the desert landscape with all the Joshua trees, mountains, and the incredible boulder stacks throughout the park. Some adventurous members spent the afternoon going on some of the hikes offered in the park. Sunday evening, we gathered for a farewell group dinner at the Acqua California Bistro near our hotel. We had a delicious four-course meal while enjoying the camaraderie of friends after a long weekend of activities and fun in the warm California desert. AUSPUFF MARCH/APRIL 2020

Wildflowers, Windmills and a Taste of Tehachapi April 18 and 19, 2020
O
ur springtime weekend adventure has something for everyone! Spectacular poppy fields, giant wind turbines, an inviting town founded in 1860, hometown delights, and a true railroad marvel! Our drive begins in Fillmore, winds through San Francisquito Canyon, and offers stunning views of the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve area before heading up Tehachapi’s back roads to get lunch and up close and personal with the area’s friendly giants. Following lunch, enjoy guided access inside the Historic Victory Garden Wind Project: 900 acres and home to some 280 wind turbines of varying types and sizes installed over the last four decades. We’ll drive the ridgetop, enjoy panoramic views, and peek inside a modern 300-foot wind turbine. The decomposed granite roads are well graded and maintained; expect some dust, but also a wealth of wonderful photo opportunities considering the vast and stunning views of the area’s 4,600 turbines from this 5,000 ft. vista. Next, we head to the sweet community of Tehachapi, nestled in mountains on all sides. Check into the hotel, mosey into the Visitor Center, shop for antiques, discover
the city’s murals and the Tehachapi Museum, or find Skylark Glider Port and schedule a glider ride in the area’s perfect soaring conditions. Later in the day we’ll meet up again to explore Cummings Valley, tour a local winery, enjoy no-host wine tasting, and in the evening have a delicious hometown dinner at a historic packing shed while enjoying live foot-stomping music. Sunday morning, we visit the Depot Railroad Museum before our drive to view the Tehachapi Loop, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and one of the seven wonders of the railway world. Our farewell lunch is at Tangleweed Farm, a family-owned, organic farm in the Tehachapi hills. Enjoy the rest of your afternoon in the area or join the PCA return procession via backroads and through Castaic, ending in Fillmore. Cost: $160 per person includes lunch, appetizers and dinner on Saturday, the train museum tour, and lunch on Sunday, plus the SBR activity fee. Holiday Inn Express group rate is $125 per night plus tax. Call (661) 822-9837 and request the “Porsche Club” rate. Rooms in Tehachapi fill up VERY quickly – Book now! Questions? Motoring to Malibu Through the Santa Monica Mountains Saturday, May 16, 2020
A
memorable drive takes us through the Santa Monica Mountains, 52 miles on famous roadways such as Decker Canyon, Mulholland Highway, and Stunt Road. Cresting the range at nearly 2,400 ft., the vistas are beautiful—Calabasas and the Santa Susana Mountains to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The quick decent takes us to Pacific Coast Highway and Casa Escobar, our lunch destination across the street from Malibu Pier. The old Malibu Inn marquee still appears on the Casa, where Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and many famous bands once played. At our own private seating area, we’ll relax on their outdoor patio where a Mexican style buffet, including nonalcoholic beverages, awaits us. A no-host bar is also available.
T
he day starts at 9:00 a.m. in Newbury Park at Ghost Shield headquarters, 1168 Tourmaline Drive. A light bite and refreshments will help start our engines. Ghost Shield representatives will give us a tour of their stunning facility and explain how they apply Paint Protection Film and its benefits. Departure time is 10:00 a.m. sharp. Event cost is $45 per person, which includes lunch and the activity fee. There is plenty of parking at the restaurant but, being located across the street from the pier and beach, there is a separate valet fee of $5, whether we park our own vehicles or not—after all, it’s Malibu. The finish time is 1:00 p.m. and then you may explore the area at your leisure. There are two ways to reserve your spot and pay. The cutoff date is May 9, 2020. 1. Preferred--register and pay with credit or debit card on the secure Motorsportreg website: http:// msreg.com/motoring2malibu 2. Valentine’s Day (Plus 1) Drive Report By: Mike Turek Photos By: Gary Krueger and Nicolas Liakas On the day after Valentine’s Day, 44 SBR members driving 22 Porsches shared an amazing drive. After meeting and greeting each other by the Golden China Restaurant in Ventura, we started our Porches (which comprised of 911s, Boxsters, Caymans, a Panamera, and a Cayenne). We headed towards Ojai using Highway 33 off of the 101 freeway. Thereafter, no other freeways were accessed. Cutting the corner on Creek Rd took us past Camp Comfort where Nick Liakas took photos of the group driving by. We tied into the east end of Ojai and up the Dennison Grade twisties -- fun, fun, fun! Onward we drove in perfect weather towards and through Santa Paula, crossing over the river and following Mountain Road. The hillsides were very green and with various colors of wildflowers dispersed along our route. After several enjoyable miles, we tied into Grimes Canyon. Onward and upward we continued exercising our wonderfully handling cars. As we were pushing the envelope up the canyon,

we spotted Gary Krueger with camera in hand shooting our entourage of beautiful cars. At Los Angeles Avenue, we turned onto Tierra Rejada to Santa Rosa Road and down to Potrero Canyon Road for more challenging driving ending up at our final destination, Dos Vientos Community Park. The reserved picnic area worked out perfectly for our group of 44 by now hungry members. Among our group were the Berks. Aaron and Angie were our newest members on the drive with only six months of membership under their belts. Today was Angie’s first Porsche club excursion and Aaron’s second event. After canvassing our group, we found that Bob and Jeanette Basset to be our longest tenured members. As people were finishing their picnic lunches, Larry Stoops asked me to announce that it was Chocolate time for your special valentine. Chocolates were shared in abundance amongst all members, YUM! A fun time was had by all.

SBR VISITS SINGER VEHICLE DESIGN Report by: Nicolas Liakas Photos by: Randall Fishwick and John Alfenito.
February 22 had a great start (a spectacular rainbow over the Conejo Valley), followed by an awesome tour of one of the world’s most renowned automotive design entities exclusively serving the Porsche mystique. Thirty SBR members in two dozen Porsches gathered at Rusnak Porsche Westlake facilities for coffee and Danish as well as instructions from Glenn Crawford who planned the entire event. We were on the road by 8:30 not quite knowing the exact driving directions as the destination requires extreme security measures. With only minor transgressions, we reached the Singer warehouse building about 45 minutes later. As stated on its web page, “Singer Vehicle Design is driven by the singular vision of Rob Dickinson, an ex-car designer who then became a rock musician who now stands as one of the world’s foremost distillers of the essence of air-cooled Porsches.” Singer Vehicle Design transforms 911s by restoring and reimagining (according to the owner’s wishes and desires), the look and power of the Porsche resulting in a rebirth of the vehicle. These 911s are decades old. They are returned as superior and mystical vehicles earning the affection and adoration of all car enthusiasts.

Rusnak/Westlake Porsche “No Substitute Saturdays” One may say any dealership that hosts a bimonthly community event, such as Rusnak/Westlake Porsche “No Substitute Saturdays”, is primarily looking to sell cars. Being a successful business, this is obviously somewhat true, but not the sole focus in the minds of Rusnak management. One reason of its success for being one of the top Porsche dealerships in the country, is the staff’s own love and admiration to the Porsche brand. They open out their arms to our community and invite us into their home regardless of one’s true purchasing interest. (Let’s face it, most people will never own this brand, but greatly admire the eye-candy in the showroom.) Rusnak understands and is happy to take time with those randomly walking in if only for the show-and-tell experience. (I can personally say this is exactly what happened to me when the dealer allowed me to first-time test drive both a 911 and 911S, well-knowing I was not in the current financial situation to purchase.) Three years later, I returned and became a customer, ironically purchasing the same year/ model, now being returned off a lease.
For event schedule updates, be sure to check on-line at: https://www.rusnakwestlakeporsche.com/no-substitute-saturdays
So, what exactly is No Substitute Saturdays? Painstakingly and time consuming, the day before the gathering, Rusnak clears a large area of its lot normally full of Porsche inventory. Then, on the third Saturday of every odd-numbered month, from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, this lot becomes a hosted ‘cars and coffee’ event. Anyone with a sports car, such as a Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini and other exotics is welcomed onto the lot, albeit those displayed mostly are beautifully preserved 356s to late model 911s, Boxsters, Caymans and SUVs. It’s truly about sports car enthusiasts getting together and chatting about their automotive passion with friends, often making new acquaintances along the way.

For those in search of a motoring adventure!
OCEAN PALMS TO MOUNTAIN PINES SATURDAY, JULY 18, 2020
A
spectacular and challenging driving adventure takes us north on Hwy 33 to its junction with Hwy 166 and then a combination of back roads to Frazier Park. Along the way we’ll make a few stops for spectacular photo opportunities, shopping for pistachios at the farm stands, and marveling at the majestic peaks, the agricultural valleys, and the pine forests at elevations in excess of 6,000 feet. Most of all, take the challenge of S curves and straightaways that stretch as far as the eye can see. Hang on tight! We will meet at The Golden China Restaurant (southeast corner of Hwy 101 and Seaward in Ventura) at 8:30 a.m. and depart at 9:00. Lunch will be
at the Pine Mountain Club’s Condor Café. From there, connect with I-5 to return home. The fee for this event is $25, which includes lunch and the SBR activity fee. To take part, complete the coupon below and return as directed. No refunds after July 8, 2020. Do note that this tour is not for the faint-of-heart! Navigating this four-hour drive-time round-trip route will require full attention: the curves, the cliffs, the changes in elevation demand it. Please take this caution seriously.

SBR’s COSMIC EVENT
MOUNT WILSON OBSERVATORY TOUR OCTOBER 17, 2020
E
njoy a drive up Angeles Crest Higway to the mountain and take part in a private, docent-led tour of Mount Wilson Observatory, high above Pasadena and the Los Angeles basin. The observatory contains two historically important telescopes: the 100-inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope which was the largest aperture telescope in the world from its completion in 1917 to 1949, and the 60-inch telescope which was the largest operational telescope in the world when it was completed in 1908. It also contains the Snow Solar Telescope completed in 1905, the 60foot (18 m) solar tower completed in 1908, the 150-foot (46 m) solar tower completed in 1912, and the CHARRA array built by Georgia State University, which became fully operational in 2004 and at its completion was the largest optical interferometer in the world. A special feature of our private tour is admission to the area directly beneath the 100-inch telescope, rather than a restricted view from the visitors’ gallery in the dome, as well as entrance into the 60-inch dome. An astronomer will have the 150-foot solar tower telescope open as well. (Please keep in mind that the elevation of the observatory and the one-mile and two-hour tour may present difficulties for those with respiratory and/or heart problems or with limited mobility.) The fee for this event is $25 per person and includes observatory entrance and SBR’s activity fee. Lunch is not provided, so bring your own picnic lunch or plan a meal together with friends. If you wish to take part, complete the coupon below and mail it with your payment by September 15. (No refunds after September 15.) Time and place of the start will be provided to those who register.

SBR Presents Donation to The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Conejo Valley Report and photos by: Nicolas Liakas On February 20,2020, SBR presented a $5,000.00 donation to our 2019 chosen charity, The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Conejo Valley. The presentation took place at The John L. Notter Family Boys and Girls Club, Redwood Middle School campus in Thousand Oaks. Leading the SBR delegation of 16 members and 11 colorful and various Porsche models was Barry Carson, our region’s President. We were greeted and welcomed by Jennie Parkinson, Director of Donor Relations, and Dr. Crystal Naone, Chief Executive Officer. Also on hand was our very own Lorraine Crawford, B&G Club board member. At least 30 boys and girls were engaged in numerous learning and stimulating educational exercises, but one in particular stood out. Sarah Borwick, an 8th grader, stole the show. She acted as the club’s docent, tour guide and all-around representative. She led us around all the activity rooms, explained their learning values, and left us all with smiles on our faces. To say she is an intellectual star in the making is an understatement. What a great representative of the club. The boys and girls were anxious to take a closer look at the Porsches that were lined up near the main entrance to the facility. They were so excited and appreciative of the opportunity to look, carefully touch, and listen to the sounds of the engines. Needless to say, this was a day they will remember for a long time.

The Last Word Ed: SBR member Doug Maletz submitted the poem below. Read about how he lost his prize possession, and why the license plate spoke the truth. It seems Doug is quite the renaissance man. He wrote and produced a musical drama for the stage! It was produced (in local theatre) in 1993 and again in 2004. Proceeds all went to charity. Two thousand people saw it and there was a full-page article about it in the January 8, 1993 Los Angeles Times. My Car I had it a decade, my brown 911 A great ride it was, twas a thin slice of heaven. But then, mid-December, that came to an end And sadly, I must say goodbye to a friend. The freeway through Simi was slick cause it rained The car next to me swerved and I hydroplaned. Slammed the center divider head on and yelled f.... Ricocheted side to side like some damned hockey puck. Across all four lanes I found my self-careening My personalized plates then took on a new meaning As the other cars passed, swear I heard someone scoff At the poor battered Porsche with the license “RYTE OFF”. My cabriolet’s totaled, the end of an era. Looking forward to driving my next brown Carrera.
