THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
U
nexpectedly, last March I became the Santa Barbara Region (SBR) President. The following week Governor Newsom effectively shut down the State. Shortly thereafter, the Board cancelled all activities and events. PCA National nixed Porsche Parade 2020 at La Quinta and ROD HERSBERGER the Werks Reunion during Monterey Car Week. Our annual holiday brunch has been cancelled as well. The LA Auto Show is off, too. SBR’s situation has been no different than any other organization, business, or family. We had to adapt and stay safe to drive another day. The Board quickly recruited Steve Doll to replace me as Vice President and that has proven an excellent choice. SBR has a strong, committed, and active Board. It includes four former presidents who have provided valuable counsel. The Board continued to meet on schedule using Zoom. This medium allowed me to invite PCA Executive Director Vu Nguyen and our Zone 8 representative to a Board meeting to get their perspectives on bigger picture issues. SBR continues to be a leading region in PCA. An example is Der Auspuff winning PCA’s Best Newsletter in Class IV thanks to the leadership of retiring editor Nick Liakas. His successor Dennis Power has produced four informative issues of Der Auspuff Messenger. Randy Fishwick maintains Zone 8’s best website. All the other Board members contribute equally in different ways. To help others in need during the pandemic, the Club donated $1,000 each to the Santa Barbara Food Bank,
the Ventura Food Share, and the Boys and Girls Club of Conejo Valley. I encourage all members to help people affected by the coronavirus and the recent massive fires. The question, what to do when a car club cannot meet? was to invite members to submit pictures of their cars and talk about them. We had more than 150 submissions that have been listed on www.pcasb. org and our SBR account on Flickr. There were other frequent communications about what else the Region needed to share with members. As the State began to relax some restrictions, SBR “reopened” on August 22 with Motoring to Malibu: a great success. The Club follows all State and PCA health guidelines, including wearing masks when outside our cars and maintaining appropriate physical distancing. Last September, I replaced the twicemonthly breakfasts with Cars & Coffee. This format will stay in effect until the Board feels sit-down dining is safe. We’ve had great turnouts in both Camarillo and Santa Barbara. All driving events this fall are sold out. Look for a tentative schedule of future driving events elsewhere in this issue. Doreen Pankow and Nick Liakas are retiring from the Board. Both are former presidents. Doreen was PCA National “Enthusiast of the Year” recently and Nick was editor of our award winning Der Auspuff. Clubs like ours would not be successful without leaders like these. As we look forward to turning the calendar in a few weeks, we hope for a healthier and more normal 2021. They’ve left the publication well designed and with good, practical systems in place. Having now put out my first issue of Der Auspuff, I can say they will be tough acts to follow. Significant contributions of work and information by others have gone into this issue. Nick, of course, and Doreen Pankow are always on the front lines. With Der Auspuff Messenger, the biweekly newsletter we put out in August and September, we reported on many SBR members who kept the passion by participating in drives, autocrosses, and visiting Cars & Coffees outside our region. I continue to catch up by including articles from some who participated in autocrosses and drivers education events during the pandemic. It is also good to report on our two, wellattended driving events, the first since things came to a halt last spring: Motoring to Malibu and Back Roads Drive Through Wine Country. A highlight as well was a contribution by PCNA and Porsche Santa Barbara of test drives of four, new Porsches. SBR is back! Feedback from members will always be appreciated, as will ideas for articles and photographs of the cars we love and the drives and events in which we participate. Onward.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2020 spectacular and challenging driving adventure takes us north on Hwy 33 to its junction with Hwy 166 and then a combination of back roads to Frazier Park. Along the way we’ll make a few stops for spectacular photo opportunities, shopping for pistachios at the farm stands, and marveling at the majestic peaks, the agricultural valleys, and the pine forests at elevations in excess of 6,000 feet. Most of all, take the challenge of S curves and straightaways that stretch as far as the eye can see. Hang on tight! We will meet at 8:30 a.m. and depart at 9:00. You’ll be given notice of the meeting place at least 10 days before. This tour is now BYO lunch. There are picnic
tables at Pine Mountain Club and a small restaurant with Mexican food if you so choose. The SBR activity fee is $10 per person payable at the start in Ventura (exact cash amounts appreciated). Navigating this four-hour drive-time round-trip route will require full attention: the curves, the cliffs, the changes in elevation demand it. Please take this caution seriously.

Motoring to Malibu
The Show Must Go On For Our First Pandemic-era Event

ew things are as much fun as planning a PCA Region drive: deciding where to meet, creating the route, and choosing the destination (usually in the reverse order). I never expected this one to take 15 months from inception to execution. However, in the end, this turned out to be one of our best challenging drives!
Early in the planning stage, I secured Ghost Shield in Newbury Park as the starting point, with a continental breakfast and tour of their facility. The lunch destination was to be Casa Escobar in Malibu, across the street from the city pier. We had their entire patio reserved with an awesome buffet. All that was cancelled when COVID-19 hit. Fortunately, today Ghost Shield is alive and well, continuing to apply protective coatings on Porsches and other fine automobiles, but Casa Escobar is shuttered, not making it through these tough pandemic times.

I started planning again from scratch, the most important decision being to keep the same drive route. I found a starting point at a shopping center in Newbury Park and a terrific destination spot on Pacific Coast Highway: Malibu Bluffs Park. Changing from a restaurant to bringing our own lunches, it was a perfect location overlooking the Pacific Ocean and had a huge parking lot for our Porsches. So, with a new meeting location chosen and a destination I moved the drive date to August 22. Now all was set; what else could possibly go wrong?

Two weeks before the event I took my second test drive to confirm correct odometer readings and accurate driving directions. I started out and while having an awesome time in the twisties once again realized just how terrific this route is for club members. I arrived at Malibu Bluffs Park to write down my final odometer reading. What! The city had placed CLOSED signs at the entrance and the parking lot was locked. Apparently, weeks earlier “young adults� were not following COVID rules and the City Council put its foot down. It was back to the drawing board with little time to spare.
With the assistance of our amazing and full-of-life Activities Chair Doreen Pankow, signed waivers and activity fees were collected. The final count was 28 colorful Porsches of various models, a sold-out event with this number as we had to keep our head count low due to the pandemic. Along with last minute announcements we also had a raffle! The good folks at Lavaggio–The Art of Auto Detailing in Agoura Hills sponsored this drive by providing discount gift certificates to every car, plus one free Signature Wash (a mini detail valued at $79) which we decided to raffle off. Congratulations to member Emileo Sandoval for his lucky win! Departing minutes before 9:30 a.m., we headed out on our approximately one and one-half hour adventure. As the lead
car, let me tell you, nothing appears cooler than looking in your rearview mirror and seeing a long trail of beautiful Porsches. Our route took us onto Potrero Road in Newbury Park, through the horse community of Hidden Valley, and onto Westlake Blvd./Decker Canyon to Mulholland east. From there, we passed through the gorgeous hillsides of vineyards, much of it owned by Malibu Family Wines. For our ABC Bachelor/Bachelorette fans, we passed the famous bachelor mansion on Kanan Road. Jumping back onto Mulholland, we headed up a twisty grade and saw a person with tripod and dressed in safety green on the side of the road. It was none other than SBR member Gary Krueger with his high-end camera focused on our cars. Strategically positioned, Gary captured our cover photo as the first cars drove by. Good job! From Mulholland we turned onto famed Stunt Road. While heading south and uphill, we felt our ears popping while reaching one of the highest elevation roads within the Santa Monica Mountain range. Now downhill, we made our way onto Las Flores Canyon, a twisty, narrow at times, road to Pacific Coast Highway. Continuing up the coast, many joined in for lunch at the popular Malibu Country Mart courtyard area were there was plenty of parking as well as social distance seating. Others choose to do some serious Malibu shopping or simply head back home. By 12:30 p.m. it was all over: 15 months of planning gone in only a few hours. No question: it was worth it!

In the end, here is how this story unfolds. With social distancing and masks required, on a beautiful Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. we met at the Newbury Park shopping center lot, excited to drive the Santa Monica Mountain range into Malibu. Being the first PCA driving event in months due to the pandemic, members were eager to get out and drive! Santa Barbara is perhaps special in that socializing with friends is what we love to do, second only to driving our Porsches. It was hard to keep in our cars or standing just beside them, but Region President Rod Hersberger was thankfully there to keep an eye on everyone, making sure we all stayed within PCA COVID safety guidelines.

Explore King Gillette Ranch February 20, 2021
O
ne of the most stunning locales in the Santa Monica Mountains, the 588-acre King Gillette Ranch offers a rare, unspoiled view of California’s rich archaeological, cultural, and historic resources, including a Chumash settlement. Wallace Neff, an architect of California’s Golden Age, designed the nationally significant structures for razor magnate King C. Gillette in the 1920’s. Now owned by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, the park features some of the original formal landscaping on the estate, including a grand entry, a serene pond, sweeping lawns, bridges, and the Spanish Colonial Revival style mansion with a formal courtyard and terrace.
From the museum, we will have a relaxing and beautiful drive along the Pacific Ocean on Hwy 1 and head into Malibu before turning inland to the King Gillette Ranch for a highlighted tour of the grounds and structures of the Ranch. There are outdoor accommodations for seating, so be sure to pack a lunch and beverage! Please note that no dogs are allowed at the Ranch.
Our morning starts at The Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard with a guided tour by Executive Director David Neel. The mission of the museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret the history and heritage of the American automobile, including offering education programs on the role of the automobile in the tri-county area.

he Kern River Valley is gorgeous! Especially in the spring when the river rampages down the canyon and engages your senses every step of the way. Join like-minded SBR adventurers as we conquer the turns, hear the roar of cascading water, feel the spray, and stare at the numerous waterfalls along the drive to our destination, the village of Kernville. We start the day at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot by Denny’s Restuarant, Moorpark Market Place (aka Target shopping center) in Moorpark, at 800 New Los Angeles Avenue, just off Hwy 23. Plan to bring your own lunch for a noontime stop. There is an activity fee of $10 per person for this event, payable the morning of March 20 at the meeting place. AUTOCROSSERS REUNITED
A Day At Auto Club Speedway By Amy Smith

Part of what appeals to me about autocross is that it provides drivers with a safe controlled environment where we can test the limits of our Porsche’s capabilities.
W
ith the COVID-19 pandemic, PCA’s spring autocrosses in Southern California were among the many activities that were cancelled. However, as official health and safety guidelines evolved, several PCA regions have been successful in adapting their operations and resume autocross events. I recently had the pleasure of driving my 2012 Boxster in the Riverside Region (RsR) autocross at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. It was my third time autocrossing there, and it has become one of my favorite locales for their creative course layouts and large open space. RsR also puts on the only Zone 8 autocross where drivers don’t have to do any corner working, a really great perk, especially when temperatures can approach triple digits! (For those unfamiliar with autocross, corner workers are responsible for maintaining the course by replacing downed cones and flagging drivers when there are hazards. Drivers usually take turns doing this, but RsR hires corner workers for their events.) The day started off at 6:30 a.m. with a line of Porsches at the gate. There were a few notable differences from our pre-pandemic routine; before entry everyone had on a face covering and it took a few extra minutes to take everyone’s temperature and fill out an additional health waiver. Once inside the gate, I quickly found several of my friends from the Santa Barbara Region, as well as the NSQ Racing team. Even with masks on, I could tell they were all smiles!

After removing the loose objects from my vehicle and passing the tech inspection, it was time for the course walk. This is where you explore the course on foot while visualizing where you’ll want your car to be at each point. It’s good to do this with several other drivers to get their perspectives—“if you stay tight at this

turn, you’ll be slow into the next one, so better to stay wide. . . .” At 3/4 mile in length, the course included several tricky S-turns and slaloms, and there was a bit of debate among several of us on how to best attack the slaloms. Following the course walk, we gathered (while still keeping six feet from our neighbors) for the mandatory driver’s meeting, which covers safety protocols, autocross rules, the day’s schedule, and other announcements. By 9:00 a.m., the track was “hot” and the first run group started driving. I was assigned to the third run group, so I used the time to watch other drivers, snap a few photos, and socialize. Before long, it was my group’s turn to queue up. As I inched my way to the starting line, I did one last safety check: “Seat position properly adjusted? Check. Seatbelt on? Check. Helmet on and chinstrap tightened? Check.” The grid worker motioned me toward the starting line. Once there, he marked a sticker on my windshield to indicate that this was my first run for this session. He looked down the course to make sure the car ahead of me was far enough along and that it was safe for me to proceed. “Ready?” he asked me. “Yes,” I replied. I was excited and nervous. With a wave of his green flag, he yelled “Go!” and I pressed down hard on the accelerator pedal. I was off!
Part of what appeals to me about autocross is that it provides drivers with a safe, controlled environment where we can test the limits of our Porsche’s capabilities. As I discussed with a fellow participant, autocross teaches us valuable driv-
ing skills and provides us with first-hand experience of our car’s handling that could someday help us avoid an accident on the road. Each driver got five runs in the morning session and another five in the afternoon. Considering the number of participants—more than 70—ten runs were great. As the day progressed, so did my driving. I was able to trim a few seconds off of my lap times while gaining confidence and consistency. Overall, it was a great way to spend a sunny SoCal Sunday, exercising my Boxster and once again enjoying the camaraderie of fellow PCA members and autocrossers. Even in the COVID-19 era, I would recommend autocross as a low-risk way to enjoy a PCA activity. The outdoor venues allow for plenty of social distancing and all driving is done solo in your own vehicle. Both California Central Coast Region and RsR are planning more events, so if you haven’t tried autocross yet, come out and join in the fun!

I drove my first run at a conservative speed to get a feel for the course. Coming off of the starting line, there was a short straightaway before a sharp left that was the start of a downhill S-turn. This led into several “gates” that seemed obvious enough during the course walk, but were easily missed when driving if you weren’t looking far enough ahead. After another S-turn, I made it to the first slalom, and ended up on the opposite side of the first cone from what I’d planned. “Oh well, I thought…let’s see how this approach allows me to enter the next turn. . . .” As I did my second, third, and fourth runs I got a little faster each time, but also explored different techniques at the various obstacles, such as starting my braking at different spots before a sharp turn, or seeing how long I could comfortably stay on the throttle through a section. This autocross course featured a lot of abrupt direction changes, requiring quick reflexes on when to brake and when to get back on the gas.

ast cars: we love them, the vroom of the engine, the smell of gas! When my husband Steve asked me if I wanted to join him and our good friend famed racer Jim Hall II at the California Central Coast Region Driver Education Day at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, I said, “I’d love to!” I must disclose, I’m a novice. Although I’d driven Laguna Seca before, my experience comes from cart racing. I love the feeling of being snugly strapped in by a four point harness and being able to see over the steering wheel of those little carts.

I received the driver’s day information from race chairman Bob Bruington and began my preparations: locate an auto racing helmet, review the track layout, and check the weather forecast. At first it looked like the helmet was going to be a problem since there were no rentals at the track due to COVID. Luckily, Steve discovered from our Motorsports Chair Glenn Crawford that SBR rents driving helmets.This

is good to keep in mind in case you ever want to partipate in autocross or other driving event and haven’t yet invested in the necessary equipment. Track day, Saturday, June 20, 2020, had arrived! We’d spent a couple of wonderful days journeying north up the coast through Big Sur with the Halls. Arriving at Laguna Seca, as before, I was awed by the approach to the track driving up the steep perimeter road. How it climbs up past the “WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca” billboard sign, then finally reaches the top where you get the view of the engineering marvel that is the track below. Wow, what a fantastic track it is, so neatly twisted and tucked into the hillsides! Descending to the entry gate, we put on our masks and our temperatures were taken. Check-in was paperless with no contact. Due to COVID, there was no pre-race meeting, masks had to be worn at all times, and instructors or passengers were not allowed to ride along. I was on my own.
Twenty cars were allowed in each run group starting in two lines of ten. We were signaled to go, spaced by 10-second intervals. A handful of instructors were on the track to demonstrate the proper driving line and one in the group’s lead car. Being in first position, I was directly behind an instructor. Those first few laps following were no doubt the easiest and fastest laps of the day for me. There were four run groups that day. Between sessions, most hard-core auto enthusiasts were cruising around admiring and talking all things cars. I relaxed. Steve was on the track with his run group. Shortly after the start of his session we heard there was a crash on the famous Corkscrew. I waited anxiously, watching for our GT4, hoping Steve hadn’t been involved and was greatly relieved to see him, and our car, approach unscathed. Apparently Steve was the first driver to approach the cloud of
dirt from the crash and saw the battered car pointing uphill next to the wall. The airbag had deployed but, thankfully, the driver was not injured. The track was cleared and my next session soon began. My “coaches” instructed me to use the sport button. I pushed it on and headed out. Around ten minutes into the session I noticed a black flag with a big orange circle in the middle. I knew that a black flag was bad and required the driver to exit the track immediately, but I admit I didn’t know then what this flag meant and that it was for me. I had been concentrating, scanning the track and the side and rear view mirrors, and keeping aware of the drivers around me. Once it became obvious that the flag was meant for me I was dumbfounded. What could I have done? At one point, I did fishtail coming out of turn 11 onto the straightway but that was nothing. I exited the track. What had earned me the “meatball,” as it is called, was by flooring it with the sport button engaged while passing the sound booth I’d exceeded by two decibels
the 92 db sound limit that day. I was ordered off the track for the remainder of the session and warned that if I did it again my driving day would be over. Fortunately, the lesson was learned and my day wasn’t over. Back home, in drafting this article the meatball incident came to mind and I said so. Steve replied, “that’s too embarrassing.” To which I responded, “well it may be embarrassing, but at least I didn’t drive with the parking brake on, scrape the rims, run on a flat tire to the point of destruction, or crash the car!” [Hmmm: friendly family history here? –Ed.]

It was a perfect morning: cool and clear, high 60s, slightly overcast, the track was dry. I was assigned to run group 1. Suited up, my coaches gave me last minute instructions and sent me to the gate. When I got there I found myself first in line. The gatekeeper commented, “Anxious, are you?”

Wine Country Back Roads Drive Story by Doreen Pankow

aturday, September 19, was a perfect weather day in Santa Barbara with clear skies and sunshine when 64 members of PCA’s Santa Barbara Region met at the Porsche Santa Barbara dealership. Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge welcomed us and provided everyone with pastries and other refreshments while we checked out their inventory of cars. Thanks to Porsche Cars North America and Santa Barbara Auto Group, four of our members were given the opportunity to drive four brand new Porsches on the back roads drive to the town of Los Alamos. The accompanying article by David Stone gives more information on this much-appreciated opportunity.

Thirty-five beautiful Porsches in a variety of colors and models left the starting point promptly at 9:30 a.m. We were officially underway on our picturesque drive through the Santa Ynez Valley. We traveled over San Marcos Pass and past Lake Cachuma, and then headed north for about 30 miles through the fun, twisty curves on Foxen Canyon Road. We passed many of the well-known vineyards in the

county and even saw a large, colorful, hot air balloon floating in the sky above the vineyards. Turning west, we drove through Santa Maria before heading south on PCH/CA-1 and then east on CA-135 towards Los Alamos. At the end or our drive, most of our participants stopped at Las Alamos County Park and enjoyed their picnic lunches. We were delighted to meet five couples who have recently joined PCA SBR, and enjoyed their excitement as they talked about going on their first Photo by Gary Krueger drive with the club. Everyone was appreciative of the opportunity to drive their Porsche, get some fresh air, and make some new friends.

So . . . How Did They Drive? Four grateful members participate in PCNA’s “Drive 2020” event Story by David Stone

ll of the participants of the SBR Wine Country Back Roads Drive enjoyed the day on Saturday, September 19, but four of our members were particularly pleased to drive new Porsche models, compliments of Santa Barbara Auto Group and Porsche Cars North America’s “Drive 2020” event. I asked each of the drivers for input and here is my report. Dennis Power, our Der Auspuff editor, owns a 2017 Macan GTS and a 1981 911 SC. He drove an Aventurine Green Metallic 992S coupe for the day. He described the ride as both “responsive and relaxing.” He said that it held the road well with a wonderful suspension that made negotiating turns easy and without the need to brake frequently. When not pushing it, the car became a comfortable touring machine. He added that it represents a beautiful

evolution of the 911 and is very well executed. He found the interior to be comfortable with well-placed and easyto-read instruments. He added that if he were in the market for a new Carrera he would purchase the 992S. Randy Fishwick is our SBR webmaster and owns a 2002 Boxster. He drove a white 718 Boxster equipped with PDK. He said it felt like a “modern car” with plenty of power from the turbo four-cylinder engine. He was particularly impressed with how the car performed in Sport mode, and he enjoyed manipulating the paddle shifters through the winding back roads. He liked the modern audio system and thought that the sound of the four-cylinder was all Porsche. Randy would purchase this car if he were in the market for a new Porsche.

Bob Clarke is our SBR advertising manager. He describes himself as “old school” and owns a 2014 50th Anniversary Edition 911S and a 1972 911T project car. He enjoyed driving the Metallic Black Taycan Turbo. He said that the car had a similar feel to a 911. It was very quick, controllable, smooth, and quiet, and did not feel heavy on the road. He did not detect any lag and noted that the brakes were excellent. Although Bob has not been a fan of electric vehicles, the performance of the Taycan changed his point of view. He would encourage anyone interested in a sporty electric sedan to check out the Taycan. Dave Jensen is one our newer members, having joined SBR in April after buying a 2016 991S. He drove a Volcano Grey Metallic Taycan Turbo. He has had limited experience with electric vehicles and was impressed with the performance of this car. He said that although it is
a heavy sedan, it had a light, solid, and stable feel on the road, as a Porsche should. It had “blistering acceleration” and precise steering. The brakes were excellent, and he could not detect brake regeneration in the normal driving mode. His car was equipped with the “Spaceship Sound” option that was evident on acceleration and deceleration. He said that Porsche has set the bar very high in the EV world with the Taycan. He would consider one if he were in the market for an electric family car. Each of our drivers expressed their appreciation to PCNA and the Santa Barbara Auto Group for providing an enjoyable day behind the wheel of a new Porsche. Special thanks go to our host, Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge, and SBAG Concierge Jonathan Price, who accompanied us on the tour and provided expert answers to our many questions about the cars.

Rusnak/Westlake Porsche and Ventura County Sheriff’s Foundation Campaign
S
ergeant Ron Helus was killed during the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill when he and another officer were the first law enforcement officials to arrive on the scene responding to an active shooter call. Sgt. Helus died a hero protecting his community. He served the department for 29 years and was looking to retire in the next year or so. He is remembered by his wife and son. The campaign was inspired by General Manager Keith Goldberg of Rusnak/Westlake Porsche. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Foudation enthusiastically joined in. A tribute vinyl wrap was commissioned from Ghost Shield Film located in Thousand Oaks. The black 2020 Porsche 911 was wrapped in honor of Sgt. Ron Helus and his heroic actions. The car wrap mirrors a Ventura County Sheriff patrol car with Sgt. Ron Helus’s name on the driver’s side. The project was funded entirely by private donations.
