THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER In early May, my wife and I went to the Finish Line Auto Club’s Porsche 2021 event, sponsored by

Rusnak Porsche Westlake. Talk about your big boy toys; the owners of the various condos have them in abundance! Many of the great Porsche models like the 918, Carrera GT, 356 Carrera 2, 1970’s Carrera RSs, and GT2s were there in abundance. There was a smattering of those Italian things as well. If you get a chance to visit this place, it is worthwhile. A second one is being developed in Costa Mesa that is even larger. While the “new normal” keeps evolving and changing, the Club is pretty much back into the swing of things. Our twice monthly Cars and Coffees are well attended and Club drives are at capacity. I had not been on either the Gimmick Rally or the Poker Run and they were a lot of fun. There were 12 first-time attend-

ees at the Gimmick Rally and I emailed to thank them for participating. Since Zone 8 cancelled its concours series, our board decided to cancel our concours that was scheduled for October 10. We just did not know how many cars and judges we could get outside our region. The Montecito Motor Classic at the Polo Grounds also popped up on the same day. We always need to recognize and patronize Rusnak Porsche Westlake and Porsche Santa Barbara, our two dealer sponsors, as well as the many advertisers whose financial support helps subsidize the cost of producing Der Auspuff. The board will continue to monitor and evaluate health guidelines for indoor events if we wish to resume sit-down breakfasts and lunches after driving tours. In the meantime, happy motoring and safe travels to your desired destinations.

Board of Directors Meetings SBR’s Board of Directors meets on the second Wednesday of every oddnumbered month beginning at 6:30 p.m. At this time, the meetings are held online via Zoom. Member attendance and participation are encouraged. Board meeting minutes are posted on the SBR website: www.pcasb. org/#club_news

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK DENNIS POWER Horsepower: always more. For some, cars are just a means of transportation. For SBR members, their Porsches are a way of life. Most of us connect knowing that our Porsches are engineered to make the driver feel one with the car through the twists and turns of a back country road. Others connect through the shear power at the throttle and the throaty sound of the exhaust. When a new model is released, the marketing folks at Porsche ensure we know the increase in horsepower over the previous models. And the reviewers in the automobile magazines tell us how the engineers in Stuttgart pulled out the magic of increasing power by tweaking an existing block or adding another turbocharger. We certainly pay attention as well. You’d think we reached the apex of the horsepower curve years ago. Why keep adding power beyond what is useful in most of our driving: city streets, clogged freeways, speed limits? Yet the appeal remains and the Porsche designers, engineers, and marketers know it. I gathered data on the horsepower of all 911s at each model’s year of introduction: coupes, cabriolets, targas, Ss, 4s, 4Ss, and GTSs are combined in the graphs to the right. Turbos are another animal and I treated those separately—that’s so-named Turbos, not more recent models that have turbocharged motors, but not the label. And for both data sets I projected the trend line out 10 years. The 911 started out with hp in the mid to high 100s. In 2020, we are hovering around an average of 400 hp. By 2030 we may be bumping 500 hp. Turbos started out in the mid to high 200s,

are in the 500-600s today, and could be approaching 700 in 10 more years. If you have a bigger car to push, some of that increase in power will just go to carrying a heavier load. I also looked at horsepower per pound of curb weight. As you would expect, the power to weight ratio also increases significantly. About 0.07 lbs per hp was found for the early 911s and that is about double today. For the Turbos,

the start was about 0.09 lbs per hp and is about 0.17 today, again, close to double. In addition to the 911’s looks and engagement, it’s clear that power and efficiency will continue to deliver the emotion as well. The peak in horsepower might be still to come, but it may be, too, that we have reached a point where major performance improvements will be elsewhere. July/August 2021

or months ahead of this trip, we looked forward with enthusiasm and gratitude to Mike Malamut for his willingness to give us exclusive, Saturday morning access to his wide selection of fun cars, beautifully restored classics, and automobile lifestyle memorabilia. And, it turned out, Mike was on hand to offer some personal insights into how he came about acquiring such a collection and creating his large, unique museum. But we had another treat ahead before that. Most club members started at our usual Cars & Coffee location with check in by Doreen Pankow and volunteers. That done, an iconic, southern California drive awaited. Steve Geldman gave us his morning safety and route briefing and then led the way for our large fleet of Porsches

of all models and years. Because the group was large, Art Shinn volunteered to lead the back half of the caravan on our way down the coast. Both lead autos are beautiful Sapphire Blue Porsches, a perfect color for a sunny, spring morning. The route was one of our favorites: the Santa Monica Mountains. After an impressive parade down Pacific Coast Highway, as we approached Malibu we looked for the left turn onto Encinal Canyon Road, where the narrow canyon and ridge top twisties begin. The route continues onto Mulholland Highway, then to Decker and Potrero roads, and into the town of Newbury Park. Here is where the Malumut Auto Museum awaited, as did some of the group who didn’t do the mountain drive but agreed to meet us at the museum itself.

After access to his two major buildings and the “yard” out back, Mike assembled us all for remarks and anecdotes. He owns three buildings, and those used for the museum are packed with cars (some on lifts two high) and every square foot of wall space taken up with something auto related. He even leases out part of one building, noting, “If I didn’t lease it out I would just have more cars.” Mike spoke to the crowd about his love for cars and particularly Porsches because they are so fun to drive. That must have been kind of a bummer to hear for the few Ferrari Club members he kindly let in that day. I hope the accompanying photos give you a taste of Mike’s extraordinary collection. Some of my favorites, besides all the memorabilia, were the deep blue Alpha Romeo, the mini 3 wheelers, the classic old camper trailers out back, and every old 911 and 356 in his collection, of which you’d think he’s almost cornered the market. hose able to attend the Finish Line Porsche Event sponsored by Rusnak Porsche Westlake on May 8 were treated to an excellent feast for the eyes, ears, and palette. Open to all PCA Santa Barbara Region members and others by invitation, it showcased many beautiful Porsches from a wide range of models and years. There were dozens of other immaculately maintained exotic and domestic makes on display as well. Finish Line Westlake Village itself consists of 32 individually owned car condos, as well as a fully provisioned private lounge. Many of the car condos were open for display of their Porsches and other brands. One of the most impressive was owned by Mike Malamut, which housed a

wide selection of historic Porsches including a 930, an early 911 Carrera, 914, 912, a fabulous looking 904, and a 550 Spyder. Even more Porsches and exotics were to be seen outside of the condos themselves, including a wide selection of 911’s, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens, Audi R8s, midengine Corvette C8s and a lineup of Porsche Carrera GTs! Note the Rusnak GT3 in Gulf livery. Entertainment was provided by a live band playing classic rock and pop, and catered food and drinks were available as well. Many

thanks to Finish Line and Rusnak Porsche Westlake for sponsoring this exceptional event!

500 Shades of Porsche Story and photos by Steve Geldman This is not a steamy romance novel about Porsche. However, the accompanying photography subjects are pretty darn sexy.

onths before the pandemic, 000 Magazine, a highend journal specific to Porsche, hosted “Rare Shades 4” in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District. The event highlighted the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 914 and celebrated as well “Paint to Sample” and unusual Porsche colors. Privately owned Porsches of many models—vintage and late—arrived from as far as Texas for this colorful, one-day event. It seems from the cars we often see on the roads here in Southern California that automotive manufacturers make their statements in exterior colors. Lamborghini’s are most often seen in a striking yellow or orange in matte, gloss, metallic, or pearl finishes. Ferrari’s are famous for their signature, highgloss Ferrari Red. Mercedes-AMG rides are usually subtle, dressed in white, grey, silver, or black. Motorcycle manufacturers are no different with Harley Davidson’s trademark color being Harley Orange, Kawasaki with Candy Lime Green, and Ducati, having their Italian roots along with Ferrari, also targets red as their trademark motif (“Ducati Red,” it’s often called). On the other hand, Porsche oddly has never seemed to have marketed themselves to a specific exterior color, but instead, shortly after their inception, has blanketed customers with a wide Pantone swatch of choices. During the years 1948 and 1949, Porsche had designed and built in Gmünd, Austria, approximately 50 model 356s, considered as prototypes by some. In 1950, Porsche permanently moved further development to Zuffenhausen, a district in Stuttgart, Germany, were 356 production was truly born. Those buying a 1950 356 had no other color option than “Fashion Grey.” Following this new factory kickoff year, exterior color options exploded. From 1951 through the final 356 production year in 1965, on average, there were 11 colors offered each year. In 1964 enters the now iconic Porsche 911. By 1966, the 911 had an astonishing 37 exterior colors available. In that same year, its entry-level sister model, the 912, had even more at 38 colors on the palette chart. Long before computers and robotics, working in Porsche’s painting department must have been chaotic! With a rainbow of paint colors, what if a new Porsche buyer still can’t find their personal choice? No problem. Porsche has offered customers Paint To Sample, simply known as PTS. For years, one can order their car from a local dealer and have the Porsche factory paint the vehicle to the color of the customer’s request, albeit with color pre-approval from management in Stuttgart. More recently, Porsche PTS orders had been put on hold due to limited production capacity, but as of the time of this writing Porsche dealers are once again accepting PTS orders, naturally with an extended production wait period. This is a lightly edited version of an article that originally appeared in Driven World, January 2020, and is here with permission from Connected Media Group.

One example of PTS, and the photo on page 16, is of a 1978 911 SC. The original owner wanted her next Porsche to be the color of her favorite purple colored Pilot Razor Point pen. She handed the pen to her Porsche salesperson. The pen traveled to Stuttgart and was ultimately approved. The next time she saw her pen again it was tagged, identified with a new Porsche assigned color code, and arrived along with her new 911 SC. Her PTS-added cost was a mere $910, but to the buyer it seemed steep at the time. This SC is now with its second owner, a Texas-based, private Porsche collector. One local Porsche owner ordered his 2019 GT3 Touring in a PTS Gulf Blue, a long-time and well-known color for Porsche, but not a standard choice for this specific car. Therefore, it is still considered a special order exterior paint, so checking that PTS box on his order sheet was an uptick of approximately $15,000. Jaws might drop at the sound of that cost, but considering this car model could just have become a one-off, factory-painted color for 2019 GT3 Touring, its extended future value will most likely go in a positive direction. Comparing the PTS cost of this Porsche and the aforementioned 1978 911 SC at new, the percentage of PTS cost to vehicle sales price is surprisingly about the same. His GT3 Touring in Gulf Blue is stunning and gets much attention on the road as well as at Porsche gatherings. Rare Shades 4 was a terrific event with a wide variety of original factory painted exterior colors and Porsche models on display. If you missed it, no problem. Porsche Club of America has launched “Rennbow, the Porsche Color Wiki” online. This is the largest collection of Porsche images on the web. It’s truly amazing and one of the most ambitious Porsche enthusiast sites available. There are currently about 500 shades and over 3,400 photographs and will continue to grow over time. Rennbow is searchable by color name, color family, model year, or model. Visit www.rennbow.org/search.

THE GIMMICK RALLY THAT FINALLY HAPPENED! Story by Pam and Jerry Lasnik

T

he 2021 Gimmick Rally was originally scheduled for mid-March 2020. The pandemic changed that with a two-week delay, then two months . . . and you know the rest. Initially, the plan was for a start in Santa Barbara and a Ventura park at the end. After two exploratory runs to sort out the route we figured we were done. But the pandemic said “NO!” for the year. In April 2021, we knew we needed to explore the route again. Many clues were gone. Then, Ventura cancelled the park. So, a major rerouting was required. We signed up for Dos Vientos Park in Newbury Park, but we were given nearby Borchard Park instead. What else could go wrong? On our third exploratory run we found out. Trying to turn left on State Street, we saw that Santa Barbara had shut it down to cars, even to Porsches on a rally! We needed another rewrite—the final—with new mile markers and all new clues from Ventura to Newbury Park. Fortunately, since long pent-up Porsche people were eager to get out into the world, we had a record rally sign up list. The pressure was really on us now. We checked over the clues and route directions many times.

20

DER AUSPUFF July/August 2021

Happily, the event got off to a very good start on Saturday morning, May 15, at Santa Barbara Porsche. Manager Rene Verbrugge treated us to a marvelous breakfast. It was great to see so many new club members. After the usual instructions and pep talk, we sent the 36 cars off on their adventure. And, with that, Pam and I drove to Borchard Park to get ready for them. On the way, we saw that an off ramp was closed ahead. Was it on the route? Whew, it was the one just before ours! Waiting at the park, after about two and a half hours the Porsches started coming in as hoped. No one had gotten lost and all seemed to have had fun. After an excellent barbecue lunch by Q-time BBQ from Ojai it was time for every team to score their papers. Some clues were easy. “The ocean on your right” (Pacific), or harder like “Mega” (Hertz) and “Inhale on high” (Apex Smoke & Vape). Then there was “Featuring Stormy Daniels” (Adult Store) and “Jack Daniels in a recliner” (Whiskey & Leather). Was our theme getting unsavory?

We have always known that our participants are intelligent and very savvy. This group was no exception. Out of 105 clues, first place ($45) went to Lena and David Birken with an astounding 101 points. With a three-way tie of 99, a Porsche trivia quiz resulted in second place ($30) going to Amy Smith and Ian Anderson, and the third place ($15) was earned by Sue and Phil DeRogatis. What a great way to ease out of the pandemic, drive our cherished Porsches, and meet up with so many bright and fun-loving folks.

more popular these days is the online auto auction. SBR

has enjoyed the fun and fellowship PCA provides. He vol-

member Steve Geldman recently found success this way for it replaced.

Steve came to the Porsche fold in 2015 when he was

searching for a sports car. One day, he drove past a Porsche

dealership and decided to take a test drive. He was hooked. He contacted former Rusnak salesman Carl Bell and told

unteered to take photos at events and later organized runs to

the manual transmission he had enjoyed as a young man when he owned a 1986 Nissan 300ZX. That started him

thinking about finding a Porsche that brought the engagement of having a manual transmission.

While reading Panorama magazine, he

came across an ad for PCARMarket auction service. He reviewed their website and decided

this might be the way to go. He registered and provided his credit card, which would be need-

ed if he bid or won the auction. It would also be used to pay the 5% buyer’s premium, capped at $5,000. He listed his parameters: a 2013-2016

991.1S, GTS Coupe, or Targa with a 7-speed

manual transmission. Color choice was not offered as a parameter.

Steve knew the odds of finding such a car were slim. But a few months later, the auction house notified him that a Sapphire Blue Metallic (his favorite color) 2016 GTS Coupe with a 7-speed manual and less than 18K miles was coming up for auction. What are the odds? Steve joined the seven-day auction and placed an early bid to ensure he was connected. Bid feedback from the auction house was immediate so he knew he was set to go. During the auction, he reviewed an array of photos and the CARFAX documents. He asked questions of the owner and knew the car was on consignment at NolaSport, a Porsche service and racing center in New Orleans. A spokesperson for the business also assured him that the car was in excellent condition. Serious bidders in an online auction generally wait until the last day to jump in. Bidding often continues to the last few seconds. PCARMarket has a policy that if a bid occurs during the last two minutes, the clock is set back two minutes and fifteen seconds to give all bidders a fair chance to win. Steve had placed a mental limit on what he would spend and used this last-minute tactic to place his final bid. To his surprise, no one else bid again during the final seconds of the extension period. He was immediately notified by text and email that he had won the auction. Steve arranged for payment and had the car transported. It arrived days later with a weak battery due to lack of use. This caused faults to display when he tried to pass DMV emissions testing. Rusnak Service Advisor Steve Ellis had the faults cleared in no time and Steve’s GTS was good to go. He then had the professionals at Ghost Shield provide paint protection film and ceramic coating before doing any serious driving. He’s now enjoying this beautiful car with the 7-speed manual transmission that makes him feel much more involved when driving than with an automatic.

26

DER AUSPUFF July/August 2021

Impressed with how PCARMarket conducted business, Steve decided to sell his 2013 991S using their services. He was asked to submit photos of his car, and it was accepted. The $99 seller’s fee was waived since he had just purchased the GTS. In preparation for the auction, he did some research to place a private “reserve” price on the car. He filled out the online questionnaire provided by the company, which forms the basis of the full description they compose. They also post the CARFAX documents that potential buyers always want to see. He submitted a large array of quality photos and listed all the little flaws on the car for full transparency. As the week progressed, he answered questions of potential buyers that seemed to pop up hourly while watching the bidding go higher. PCARMarket also allows private messaging between seller and buyer, a unique feature that was used by a potential buyer during Steve’s auction. During the last hour of bidding, Steve’s reserve price was met and he received a call from the auction house congratulating him. But when the auction came to an end, his price had risen by an additional $3K from another buyer Steve was very pleased with the services provided by PCARMarket. He found their staff to be knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly, and he would recommend them to anyone interested in buying or selling a Porsche.

David Stone joined PCA in 1997. He’s held numerous offices in SBR, including president for two years. He currently serves as our board-appointed dealer representative and enjoys driving his 2016 911S in Agate Grey Metallic.

spectacular and challenging driving adventure takes us north on Hwy 33 to its junction with Hwy 166 and then a combination of back roads to Frazier Park. Along the way we’ll make a few stops for spectacular photo opportunities, shopping for pistachios at the farm stands, and marveling at the majestic peaks, the agricultural valleys, and the pine forests at elevations in excess of 6,000 feet. Most of all, take the challenge of S curves and straightaways that stretch as far as the eye can see. Hang on tight! We will meet at 8:30 a.m. and depart at 9:00. Participants will be given notice of the meeting place at least 10 days before the event. This tour is now BYO lunch. There are picnic tables at Pine Mountain Club (with the expectation that you will please clean up

If you plan on participating, please send an email to nicolasliakas@ gmail.com with your name, the names of anyone with you, and your email address and cell phone number. The observatory contains two historically important telescopes: the 100-inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope, which was the largest aperture telescope in the world from its completion in 1917 to 1949, and the 60-inch telescope which was the largest operational telescope in the world when it was completed in 1908. Several other telescopes are on the premises. A special feature of the private tour is admission to the area directly beneath the 100-inch telescope, rather than a restricted view from the visitors’ gallery in the dome, as well as entrance into the 60-inch dome. An astronomer will have the 150-foot solar tower telescope open as well. (Please keep in mind that the elevation of the observatory and the one-mile and two-hour tour may present difficulties for those with respiratory and/or heart problems or with limited mobility.) Carchitecture: Houses with Horsepower Brings Both Together “Under One Roof”

T

he next best thing to a garage full of cars is a library full of car books, like this 192-page volume that explores the automobile’s relationship with architecture. By 1900, Europe and America were coming to terms with a new architectural vocabulary, as well as a new-fangled machine that would soon put the horse out of business. Things were changing fast, with the inevitable cultural coalescence of cars and architecture. We learn that French modernist Le Corbusier was obsessed with automobiles, and even worked on a car design of his own. And that the first carport was envisioned before 1910, but that it was Frank Lloyd Wright, owner of more than 80 cars throughout his life, who perfected the concept. “A car is not a horse. It doesn’t need a barn,” said the dictatorial designer. In 1954, he was commissioned by car importer Max Hoffmann—“father” of the Porsche Speedster—to design a showroom on Park Avenue in NYC that prefigured Wright’s Guggenheim Museum. Southern California’s Case Study houses are icons today. The program showcased architects like Eames, Koenig, and Ellwood, and period photos by Julius Schulman often feature a swanky sports car parked under a cantilevered carport. Craig Ellwood, by the way, was a playboy who liked fast cars, and drove a Lamborghini with the license plate “Vroom.” Among the landmark designs featured in Carchitecture are the Porsche 911 and other models of our favorite marque.

A Rip Van Winkle Tale

550 Spyder Awakened From a 35-year Slumber Story by Bobby Green

T

his was the find of the century, at least for me! And to think it all started by chasing old motorcycles. A fellow named Les Gunnarson passed away and left a collection of British motorcycles at the top of a remote hill in Orange, California. Two friends got wind of this and, thankfully, called me to come take a look. As it turns out, Les was big into Porsches back in the 60s and 70s. In 1963, for $2,000, he acquired a 550 Spyder from a woman who raced it in Hawaii. Reportedly, the car came with no working motor. Les restored the 550 in the early 1980s, collecting the pieces he needed and rebuilding the fourcam motor himself. Les never actually “lost” the car. He always knew he had it, but he soon focused more on motorcycles and the Porsche was just put into a shipping container where it’s lived for 35 years. Until now. To say the 550s are rare and valuable is an understatement. To find one that’s been spending time in a container is like finding a bigfoot riding on a unicorn: it certainly doesn’t happen very often. It’s been a surreal experience, indeed! I’m not only honored to say I was part of the rediscovery, but equally so that I could help find a new home for such a priceless vehicle. I immediately called my friend Blue Nelson, who grew up with these cars in the family and knew the top Porsche collectors in the world. Porsche 550 Spyder serial #0069, with its four-cam motor #0075, is off to a very good home, where it will be preserved and enjoyed by many. Welcome back to the world #0069! And a big thanks to the Gunnarson family. Bobby Green is the owner of Old Crow Speed Shop in Pasadena, devoted to the tradition and heritage of hot rod racing.

The rare Porsche 550 Spyder in this article was last seen in Santa Barbara in 1956. No, it was not at one of our cars & coffees or drives through the mountains—SBR wasn’t founded until 1964. This car competed in the SCCA Divisional Races held at the Santa Barbara Airport (1953-1968). At the time, the 550 was owned by Albert Hosking and driven by Jean Pierre Kunstle. They took second place at the race pictured below. —Editor

TREFFEN SCOTTSDALE 2021 Story and photos by Lorraine and Glenn Crawford nterested in taking a driving tour in some of the most beautiful areas of our country with hundreds of other Porsche enthusiasts? If so, the Porsche Treffen experience is a way to do it. We participated in the Scottsdale Treffen for five days in May and toured parts of Arizona we had never seen before. Along the way, we made new friends from all over the country as Porsche enthusiasts drive in, rent, or have their cars shipped in from near and far. Traveling the farthest was a couple that shipped their European Spec GT3RS from Germany to Miami and drove all the way to Scottsdale as a means to tour the USA along the way.

I

32

DER AUSPUFF July/August 2021

One of the coolest things about Treffen is that everywhere you looked in the Camelback Inn Resort and Spa you saw hundreds of beautiful, colorful Porsches. Every proud Porsche owner at the event was more than happy to tell you about their car and their adventure getting to Scottsdale. I was up early one morning to take advantage of the 24-hour car wash (with OZ water) and was visited by a local resident driving a Carrera GT who came by to say “hi” to the participants and get a feel for what was going on. A non-attendee 356 Speedster also cruised past me. There was a lot of this going on.

Our Treffen tours averaged about 250 miles round trip per day. There are much shorter choices that include beautiful and interesting venues if you aren’t up for a full day on the road. Our first tour took us through Mingus Mountain to Jerome, where we toured a copper mining museum and had a delicious barbecue lunch with our group in Cottonwood, a town close by. Our second tour was to Sedona. The beauty of the mountains and rock formations and the vibrant colors of the surrounding terrain awed us. The elevation change between Scottsdale and Sedona is dramatic and means completely different climates. Sedona is so strikingly beautiful we have decided to come back again on our own and spend some time there. There are beautiful art galleries, lots of hiking, and great restaurants to fill your day. In between tour days was a “Navigator’s Day Off” that allows you to tour Scottdale on your own. Lorraine was itching to visit the “best spas” in Arizona so we ended up at The Sanctuary, which was just down the street from where we stayed. Later that evening, Treffen buses took participants to Old Town Scottsdale to have dinner on their own and explore. The main challenge of the Treffen is signing up right away. If you aren’t on the registration website the second it opens there is a very good chance you won’t get a spot.

Treffen limits the number of participants to 500 people and Treffen veterans know this and are ready to register when the site opens. If you are interested in registering you need to have your finger on the button the moment the website opens, know the tours you want to sign up for, and have all of your (and your Navigator’s) information and a credit card ready to go. If you flounder, the tours will be sold out and it will be possible that you miss the entire opportunity. The cost of the Treffen includes meals, a Treffen commemorative shirt, a swag bag with useful items in it (cooler, sun shield, Porsche-themed Covid-19 masks, and more), a welcome reception, and late-night entertainment. The hotel stay is a separate charge. Each tour has an additional and reasonable cost. Treffen is a great Porsche family experience. We urge you to check it out. They are offered twice a year in various locations around the country; keep your eyes open. See you there. Lorraine and Glenn Crawford have been members of PCA since 2011. Glenn drives and races a silver 987 Cayman S and is SBR’s motorsports appointee.

THE “TRUFFLEHUNTER OF ZUFFENHAUSEN” VISITS SBR O

n the first Saturday in May, attendees at the Santa Barbara Region Cars & Coffee were tickled to see the “Pink Pig.” No, this was not the wonderful, racing-liveried, experimental Porsche 917/20, the one that tried to combine the aerodynamic benefits of short- and long-tail designs at the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans race, but just as fun nonetheless. Gunner Mench from the Big Island Hawaii Region of PCA brought his porcine, butcher-cut, vinyl wrapped 944 Turbo to the gathering and shared the story of finding this 951 and having it wrapped by Wrapstar Studio. This little brother might be the closest many of us will get to the original truffle hunter. Thanks, Gunner! —Editor
