THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER I HAVE LONG BEEN A STUDENT OF MID-CENTURY ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN. When Panorama’s January issue showed up last week, I knew it was right down my street. To help set the mood, I shook a very dry and cold martini and began my exploration. Each Porsche model featured is paired with period architecture and design. F. A. “Butzi” Porsche’s 911 silhouette (p .68) is perhaps the most recognizable car in the world. The California modern house provides an appropriate backdrop. Fast forward nearly 50 years, the 900+ hp 918 hybrid supercar (p. 94) has more modern design features than I can take in. Back to the past (p. 116) we find a recreation of a Zagato-designed 356, 60 years in the making. The issue features several other models and designs throughout its pages. Whatever model we drive, we can
find connections with these stories. I saw Frank Lloyd Wright’s showroom on Park Avenue (p. 4) before it was sadly demolished. It was a mini-Guggenheim. My wife and I also knew George and Millie Ablin (now deceased) and were fortunate to be invited to dinner at their Wright-designed home several years ago (p. 106). If you hunger for more, Christophorus #397 has a feature on the Porsche Design Centre in Weissach (p. 44) Our event planners have several interesting drives mapped out for the rest of the year. Even as we all get slowly vaccinated over the next several months, I expect we will continue to employ the recommended safety protocols the State requires. FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK DENNIS POWER 2023. Having owned both a Boxster and a Cayman, I can say that is an exciting development as well. It will be the first Porsche to use the Sportscar Platform Electric (SPE): rear-wheel drive for the less expensive version and a motor added up front for the premium variant. What about the 911s for the true believers? It could be in 2023 there will be a plug-in hybrid version of the 911 with technology taken from the 918 Spyder and 911 GTR. The theory has always been that technology developed for the track will flow down to the mass market. I suspect an all-electric 911 would be the last sacrilege for the true brand aficionado. However, Porsche AG boss Oliver Blume has your back. In November, according to Bloomberg, he said in no uncertain terms that a 100% battery-powered 911 is a long way off—if ever. So breathe easy. Europe has mandated aggressive fleet gas mileage caps with severe fines for those companies not able to meet them. Electrification is helping Porsche make traditional sports cars under a much more intensive environmental landscape. Expanding its portfolio into more popular lines also enables the company to continue fielding race cars in different hardcore motorsports fields. As noted in Flatsixes.com, Michael Steiner, board member for research and development at Porsche AG stated, “In the medium term, Porsche focuses on three different drive concepts: fully electric vehicles, efficient plug-in hybrids, and emotional combustion engines. We want to represent this trilogy in both the development of our cutting-edge road cars and in motorsport. We use the all-electric drive to contest the FIA Formula E as part of our works commitment, and the highly efficient and emotional combustion unit in GT racing. Now, the LMDh class closes the gap for us. There, powerful hybrid drives—like the ones that are mounted in many of our brand’s models—go up against each other.”

PORSCHE SAYS ELECTRIC VEHICLE PRODUCTION WILL INCREASE TO 50% BY 2025. Whatever Porsche comes up with in design or technology is a pleasure to follow. I did a little digging. Porsche’s Taycan is considered by many to be the best EV you can buy, but the $103,000 to $185,000 price tag puts it out of reach of many mainstream buyers. Within the Volkswagen Group, VW’s compact SUV, the ID.4, will be the model to help electrics go mainstream. It’s clearly aimed for a market below what Porsche has in the works. Compact SUVs are the fastest growing segment of the automobile market right now and the ID.4 is available this year. Where is Porsche headed? There was a partial update on electrification of Porsche’s future model lineup in the November issue of Panorama. One of my two Porsches is a Macan GTS. It piqued my interest to learn that by the end of 2022 we will see an all-electric version of the Macan. The size and capabilities of my compact SUV are perfect for me right now, but an EV certainly has my attention. Pricewise, it won’t be near the ID.4. The guesstimate for the starting price is about $65,000, according to Motor Trend, vs. $40,000 for the VW. Interestingly, there also will be a gaspowered Macan built on a different platform, but it is the Macan that could be all electric in a few more years. The big brother, the Cayenne, is now available in hybrid form and gets a battery capacity upgrade and extended range for 2021. A full electric version seems not on the immediate horizon. In the sedan market, 2021 saw the introduction of three hybrid models of the Panamera. The 4S E-Hybrid for example, with a 2.9 liter turbo V6 paired with a 227-hp electric motor, screams, or in Porsches marketing wording “performance, electrified.” Porsche has admitted that a full-electric Panamera is under consideration, but with no details available. Porsche isn’t fessing up to any fear that there will be competition with the electric Taycan: “We don’t see much overlap between these two cars from a customer perspective,” says product line vice president Dr. Thomas Friemuth—not sure I agree. Where does this leave those who want a sports car? The popular Boxster and Cayman will see an all-electric 718 in

iving with so many restrictions and prohibitions these days, one of the items at the top of my list that I miss the most is the freedom and the ability to do a road trip with friends. Next best is to think back to those adventures of years past and thirst for the day that I can do those kinds of drives again. One of the most memorable trips I experienced was in June 2018 when I embarked with seven other guys on a week-long tour of northernmost California and southern Oregon. Our ultimate destination was Crater Lake National Park. My fellow travelers were John Alfenito, Chip Bell, Mike Hodson, Dick Lange, Howard Rubenstein, David Stone, and Mike Turek. Six 911s, one Boxster, and one Macan on the road and through numerous villages and small towns made quite a scene. And the driving experience was super exciting. Day 1 of our adventure was straightforward: get north of Placerville to Auburn for our first overnight stop. Day 2 took us to the Marshall Gold Discovery Site—where each of us got a parking ticket at the entrance to the park. The issuer canceled the summonses
after speaking with us about our odyssey. We spent that night in the town of Chester, near the southern entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. Most of Day 3 was inside the park, after which we resumed our travels and headed to the town of McCloud to view its spectacular waterfalls along the McCloud River Canyon. We then headed to Klamath Falls for an overnight stay. Crater Lake was our Day 4 destination and we arrived there by early morning. Our first reaction to the crater was one of a mystical response bordering on a spiritual awakening. The Rogue River Scenic Highway in Oregon took us to Grants Pass on Day 4. An early departure on Day 5 directed us to Fort Bragg, California, and on Day 6 we visited Fort Ross, site of the first Russian settlement in North America. Overnight was in Petaluma, California, from where we headed home on Day 7. Each stop on the round trip was awe inspiring: a lesson in history, a sampling of geological events, and sites of incredible beauty. With special memories galore, I can’t wait for the next adventure!

t seems I’ve always had an interest in cars. Cars and traveling in them have been on my mind ever since I can remember. Like many in my “baby boom” generation, I was fortunate to have lived through some of the “golden age” of automobiles and road transportation. These memories have guided my motivation to collect and preserve symbols from an earlier era. What I have collected in the last approximately twenty years is a variety of gas, oil, and automotive memorabilia acquired by traveling to various areas and swap meets. Most of these objects were found on various road trips with other like-minded friends, which made the journeys more fun and memorable. All of this has been a worthwhile hobby. I also have an interest in working on classic cars and restoring some of them. Past car projects have been Chevys

from the ‘50s through ‘70s. In the last few years, I’ve been most interested in older Porsches. Currently, I’m restoring the 1972 911 T coupe pictured here. It’s being painted in its original color, Tangerine Orange, at Blue Kollar Auto Body and Restoration in Camarillo. The shop in which my collection is housed and displayed is in an industrial condominium complex. I’m fortunate that I own my units and can change the interior as I like. What I now enjoy, besides working on my ‘72 Porsche project, is visiting friends at my “highway garage,” sharing my collection, and talking about the cars we admire. I add thanks to PCA member and photographer Gary Krueger for his great photographic eye and help with putting this story together.

n the morning of December 16, I received the tragic news that our friend Ted Lighthizer had unexpectedly passed. I immediately put out the word to my circle of friends who knew and loved Ted. Their response was an overwhelming outpouring of sadness, shock, and love. Several of us felt we needed to do something to honor our lost friend, something car related that would bring us all together to say our final goodbyes. After much discussion it was decided that we would all gather and do a group drive. One of those contacted was Wayne Bartlett. Wayne was one of Ted’s best friends and he in turn relayed our plans to Ted’s partner Doreen Pankow. Doreen quickly got in touch with me saying she was interested in joining our group along with some of Ted’s PCA/ SBR friends. We chose New Year’s Day for the tribute and to drive some of Ted’s favorite roads. Ironically, the route I’d mapped out was the exact same route Ted had chosen for his own New Year’s drive this year.

We agreed to meet on New Year’s morning at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a small cafe on Foothill Blvd. Twenty people in all, observing COVID protocol, arrived on this brisk morning to show their respects to Ted and be with Doreen. It was bittersweet to see Doreen show up with Ted’s famous black and yellow Mini Cooper S to drive on our group run. After everyone had the chance to pass along their condolences to Doreen, the group headed out in single file to circumnavigate the mountain roads. Our final destination was a one-hour drive to Newcomb’s Ranch roadhouse on Angeles Crest Highway.

We began with a short drive along the 210 freeway to our initial climb up Big Tujunga Canyon. Days before, the weather had been harsh: rain and snow had been dumped along most of the roads on our route. Almost immediately we were finding the road strewn with rain-produced dirt and debris. As we climbed and navigated the twisties of Big Tujunga Canyon Road, one couldn’t help but think that Ted would have been one of us today, probably setting the pace. This was a route that Ted and our group had driven numerous times before. After several uphill and curvy miles, the route took us onto Angeles Forest Highway. As we continued to gain elevation the conditions got progressively worse—snow and ice had begun accumulating along the road. The higher we climbed the more snow, ice, and debris we encountered. By now it was becoming clear that the group needed to slow its pace before someone got caught out in these unpredictable conditions. After finally reaching the top of the mountain and transitioning onto Angeles Crest Highway, the road conditions became increasingly rough and the pace got even slower. Our lead car, driven by Tony Punches, made the executive decision to pull off before our final destination at Newcomb’s Ranch. It just so happens he did so onto a beautiful, majestic, snow-covered mountain overlook. As cars pulled in one by one, we couldn’t imagine a more appropriate calm, peaceful, and tranquil location to say goodbye and end our drive. As everyone stepped out of their cars into the fresh air, they shared their thoughts and said their final farewells to Ted in a sendoff that we hope would have made him feel honored.

hen you made your New Year’s resolution to get out and enjoy your Porsche more you may have thought about attending an autocross, a driving event to take advantage of the full capabilities of your car. What is an autocross you may ask? Well, according to PCA, it’s a course set up on a large parking lot or similar area with soft, rubber, traffic cones used to form a course that has turns, slaloms, and straights (see www.pca.org/autocross-defined for more information). However, a picture is worth a thousand words. Let me help you visualize a day of autocross driving. The images here were snapped at the December 2020 autocross (AX) held at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. First, you show up nice and early so you have plenty of time to get through the gate, empty your car of any loose objects, get organized, and tape assigned numbers onto the doors. Drivers who are regulars at these events often have magnetic or stick-on numbers, but blue masking tape will work as well—bring some or borrow from someone at the track. (On the next page you’ll find where to get autocross information from PCA, being assigned a number, and classifying your car.) Next, you’ll drive your car to the tech inspection line and have an inspection sheet and your car and helmet signed off by an official wearing a stylish orange vest. You’ll then turn your approved form into the registration desk where you’ll be assigned to a run group and get a sticker for your windshield. This is followed by an informative track walk

to see where you’ll be driving in a fast and safe manner and listen to others talking about best lines, apexes, and other aspects of the learning curve. You’ll then attend a drivers meeting, get last minute information, and chat with others who are more than ready to go. When the run sessions start you’ll reposition your car in an assigned lane. After your group is called, cars are released one at a time to do timed practice runs. The December program I attended included five practice runs on about a mile-long course. Once you finish a run you’re notified of your time on the course: how long it took you to get from the starting to the finish line. You then queue back up to continue to improve your performance. After you do a few runs your tires will warm up and air pressures will increase. It’s very important to check your air pressures after each run and adjust them as desired. If pressures get too high your car will begin to feel like the track is getting slippery, which can be a lot fun if you are an aspiring drifter, but it ultimately adds time to the clock—not good. Conversely, excessively low tire pressures can lead to damage and increased tire wear. Morning practice runs are followed by a lunch break. The official timed runs begin after the break. Use the skills you acquired in the morning and enjoy the rest of your day. By the end of the day you’ll have nothing but smiles and the desire to come back to improve your times and see the new friends you’ve made. Hope to see you at our next event!

Autocrosses we attend are sanctioned by Porsche Club of America and arranged through our zone, Zone 8. To get started, go to www.zone8.pca.org: click on Events > Driving Events > Autocross. You’ll want to read the helpful information found there. Technical inspections of all cars are required to maximize safety; you’ll see a link to find a sample Tech Inspection Form. To classify yourself and your car, toward the bottom of the article, click on the tab Zone 8 Rules and from there go to the Car Classification Page. Here you’ll see everyone who’s ever registered for autocross and other high performance driving events in our zone. Click on [Log In] and, since you are not already registered, you’ll want to follow the instructions. Here is where you can classify your car and be assigned a number for autocrosses and other Zone 8 on-track events. Now, register for a specific event. At the bottom of the PCA Autocross page you’ll find a link titled Events Calendar. Another option is to check the event calendars on individual websites of Zone 8 regions. Working south to north, the most active autocross and track events are held by the San Diego, Orange Coast, Riverside, Grand Prix (Long Beach), and Central California Coast regions. Many PCA regions also list their events and have registration information on www.motorsportreg.com. We strongly recommend you stick with PCA events for their efficiency, safety, and family feel.

GIMMICK RALLY Saturday, May 15, 2021
This is fun! Our drive will take us on some roads just perfect for Porsches. The rally will last somewhat over two hours of attentive driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here -- only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. A bonding experience for you and your navigator. The top three teams as determined by the highest number of correct answers will be our prize winners. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen will come in handy, too. Meeting time is 8:30 a.m. at Porsche Santa Barbara, 402 South Hope Ave. There will be complimentary coffee and pastries awaiting us. The rally will end at beautiful Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura where we will enjoy a great barbeque lunch by Q-Time BBQ. For those in search of a motoring adventure!
OCEAN PALMS TO MOUNTAIN PINES SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 2021 spectacular and challenging driving adventure takes us north on Hwy 33 to its junction with Hwy 166 and then a combination of back roads to Frazier Park. Along the way we’ll make a few stops for spectacular photo opportunities, shopping for pistachios at the farm stands, and marveling at the majestic peaks, the agricultural valleys, and the pine forests at elevations in excess of 6,000 feet. Most of all, take the challenge of S curves and straightaways that stretch as far as the eye can see. Hang on tight! We will meet at 8:30 a.m. and depart at 9:00. Participants will be given notice of the meeting place at least 10 days before the event. This tour is now BYO lunch. There are picnic tables at Pine Mountain Club (with the expectation that you will please clean up
after your use). There is also a small restaurant with Mexican food if you so choose. The SBR activity fee is $5 per person payable at the start of the event in Ventura (exact cash amounts will be appreciated). Do note that this tour is not for the faint-of-heart! Navigating this four-hour drive-time round-trip route will require full attention: the curves, the cliffs, the changes in elevation demand it.
