THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER I came of age automotively in the 1960s when the

quest for horsepower was all the rage. There was nothing subtle from Detroit like dual overhead cams and fuel injection. The mantra was “There’s no replacement for displacement.” Thus, small block V8s became big block V8s. The Beach Boys even had a song “My 409,” some versions of that car turning out 425 hp. There were several other songs as well. My favorite magazine Classic & Sports Cars June 2021 issue’s cover story was Musclemania featuring a GTO, Torino, Charger 440, Road Runner Superbird and a Chevy Malibu SS. These “muscle” cars only had between 350 and 375 horsepower. What was awesome then is routine now. My three-year-old 718 GTS Boxster has 365 hp. Porsche coaxes slightly more than 500 hp out of its nonturbo motors and about 575 from its turbo engines. Every new Ferrari and even the Dodge Challenger Hellcat have more than 700 hp. Some exotics have 1000 hp! So where am I going with all this horsepower talk? When electric cars finally take over, will talking about kW ever be the same as bragging about hp? “Dude, how many kW’s does that Taycan put out?” Porsche recently introduced its Mission R electric racecar with 800kW (1080hp), but no one will ever write a song about it.

At the September Camarillo Cars & Coffee, I had the honor of presenting our own Nicolas Liakas second place overall nationally for regions our size as Editor of Der Auspuff. Also on hand was Zone 8 rep Jeff Peck to present Nick with the Enthusiast of the Year Award for Zone 8. Both honors were well-deserved. (See page 19 for more about these honors.) In September, a lucky few of us got to visit Angel Martinez’s Porsche collections in Goleta and Ojai. For a full report see pages 32-33. The Board made a $3,500 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Conejo Valley and at the December Holiday Brunch we will collect holiday toys for the Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara. Our Club and its Board have hung together well during an uncertain period. We have good attendance at our Cars & Coffee gatherings and our driving events always sell out. Our Der Auspuff Editor Dennis Power seems to outdo himself with every issue. Thanks for your support and we’re going forward stronger in 2022.

I may be optimistic, but it seems we are at the

end of the pandemic. Specialists tell us there could be new variants, and there is still reluctance by some to be vaccinated or wear a mask, but there is no doubt that we are better at taking precautions and normality of some sort seems on the horizon. I look back over the last year and feel that what has been in this magazine has helped us get through it. I like to think the stories, the photos, and the reports have added value to our lives. The credit is not mine, it is to those who have gone to events and written about them, or who have personal adventures to share, or who created activities for us to engage in and then through their written accounts and photographs brought them to a larger audience: our members. This issue of the magazine is no exception. In fact, it is exemplary. Lisa and Robert Watt attended Werks Reunion Monterey this year and produced a fine report and shared inspiring images. It makes up a little for not being able to attend this year myself. Over five years of travel to Europe, Roger and Mindy Katz visited a Mecca for Porsche own-

ers: Gmünd. Roger’s kindness and attention to the founder of the museum there gave him a rare opportunity to visit the restored building where the 356 was created. President Rod Hersberger arranged for us to visit SBR member Angel Martinez’s extensive collection of Porsches and other fine vehicles. Steve Geldman captured the images. Perhaps the prime example of what makes our region great is the dedication of Nicolas Liakas. In this issue there are two examples of why he won the PCA award for Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year 2020, not to mention second place nationally in our group-size for past editorship of Der Auspuff. Nicolas organized, led, and wrote about SBR’s August adventure to The Pine Mountain Club. Then, in September, he pulled off a seven-day, six-night group tour of iconic locations in the American Southwest. Adding to my optimism about the coming year, members are stepping up to organize new ways for us to get together, drive our Porsches, and share stories. The Holiday Brunch is coming up, thanks to Doreen Pankow. Lionel Neff has put together a great drive and lunch in January— the Sweetwater Run—and in February an activity for us and our sweethearts—the Valentine Heartthrob Tour. Lionel and Art Shinn are also planning for a full year of activities in 2022. Thank you for the opportunity to share all of this good work through our magazine. Leslie and I send best wishes for a very Happy Holiday Season and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

SBR’s August Adventure T

his is the report on an activity that was 18 months in the making. Planned in the spring of 2020, postponed twice because of the pandemic, and finally held on August 21 this year. Still, the long-anticipated day had its issues, its challenges, and a routine of which the Keystone Cops would have been proud. The skies were a dark grey and heavy mist enveloped the starting point for the drive at the junction of U.S. 101 South and Seaward Avenue in Ventura. Based on early returns, more than 30 Porsches with 60 humans were expected, but only 18 cars with 31 passengers made it to the starting line. Absent those who, apparently, were scared off by the mist, the smaller gathering was on its way to roads most of our participants did not know existed. We experienced roads that took us to and through the towns of Lake Hughes, Lake Elizabeth, Gorman, Frazier Park,

and finally Pine Mountain Club in Kern County. Large sections of Lake Hughes Road still showed massive scars from recent wildfires and caught our attention at mud slides now bordered by huge boulders to minimize or redirect land or mud sites whenever rain decides to next visit our SoCal hills and mountains. It was a sobering sight. But wait . . . Why did the Keystone Cops come up in our adventure? The driving instructions advised that just south of the town of Gorman we should take the frontage road to Frazier Park and then on to Pine Mountain Club. A few hundred yards beyond, there were signs directing traffic unto I-5, North and South. As it so happened, a handful of our group took the frontage road while another group took the I-5 North diversion and, yes, wait for it, the final group found itself heading south on the freeway instead of north. Seeing our colorful chariots crisscrossing in a wild pattern brought back the memory of slapstick comedy. As a reward, though, the sun broke through just as we arrived at our ultimate destination, The Pine Mountain Club. With plenty of parking at the clubhouse area, our Porsches instantly grabbed the eyes and attention of the locals. A short stroll took us to gazebos and picnic tables where we enjoyed the lunches we’d prepared at home at the start of the day. Equally rewarding, it was a fabulous group mingling veterans with newbies, and in that way made it a very special day to remember. Nicolas Liakas is past editor of Der Auspuff. onterey Car Week is one of the most anticipated automobile gatherings in California every year. With premier events such as Concours on the Avenue in Carmel showcasing rare American and foreign cars, Concorso Italiano featuring luxury and exotic Italian cars, and the prestigious Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach, Monterey Car Week has something for every car enthusiast. Among these events, Werks Reunion, the highly anticipated gathering in Monterey for Porsche enthusiasts, did not disappoint. This is the national PCA Concours-style car show on the West Coast. (Werks is also held on the East Coast earlier in the year in Amelia Island, Florida). The event was not held in 2020 owing to the pandemic. This year it fell on Friday, August 13, but nothing was unlucky about it.

There was a scramble when the originally scheduled setting could not accommodate the event this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Luckily, Concorso Italiano stepped in with PCA to partner by sharing the fairways at the beautiful Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, California. Werks was on Friday and Concorso Italiano on Saturday. Friday morning was overcast as we arrived. Volunteers directed Porsche corral and spectator cars to a back entrance that involved switching our Cayman into four-wheel drive (as if, just kidding) and off-roading across bark-covered dirt (not kidding) to arrive at damp, grass fairways. Porsche owners across the corral proceeded to whip out their detailing towels and sprays to rid cars of the dirt/bark-dust layer that had enveloped the bodies and wheels of their formerly pristine cars.

Fortunately for them, concours cars entered through the front entrance of the golf course, led by personnel driving golf carts on the cart path to the respective locations for their competition class and year. Here were lush, green, cypresslined fairways overlooking the Monterey Peninsula with glimpses of the ocean in the distance. PCA Executive Director Vu Nguyen, who served as emcee for the day, said the event sold out, capped at a capacity of 165 judged cars and 550 cars in the Porsche corral. The event drew an attendance in the thousands. Sponsored by Michelin, Werks Reunion featured over 30 vendors and sponsors, five food trucks (you could find coffee, pastries, and breakfast burritos in the morning, and sandwiches, brats, and tacos in the afternoon), and a live band on stage. Throughout the day, those having judged or corral cars were eligible to win raffle prizes. They gave away multiple sets of Simpson tool bags, Coco Mats, and much-desired Michelin

tires valued at $2,000! Vu said that securing Bayonet Golf Course and partnering with Concorso Italiano was not final until mid-May 2021. One would never know that all logistics occurred in just THREE months! From an attendee’s perspective, everything ran like a finely-tuned machine. Speaking of finely-tuned machines, besides concours-judged cars, many others were on display, starting with Porsche’s electrifying presentation of three brand new Taycans. Next to the stage were two impressive Gunther Werks Porsches; the only parts not customized and improved were their floorboards! Patrick Motorsports also had cars on display. Special guest, auto journalist and Top Gear presenter Chris Harris, pre-recorded a video interview with Vu Nguyen that was broadcast during the afternoon. One of the highlights was seeing the PCA Juniors participating in judging. Led by National PCA Juniors Chair Jay Gratton, about a dozen young Porsche enthusiasts received clipboards with judging sheets. Older kids received judging sheets similar to ones used by concours judges using a point system; younger kids received judging sheets using 1 to 5 stars. Jay said all kids were welcome to participate: he would never turn away any child who wanted to join in whether preregistered or not. It is interesting to note differences between judging at Werks Reunion vs. our Zone 8 Concours events. For example, Zone 8 focuses mainly on cleanliness where residue on a judge’s rag can cost you points, while Werks focuses on visual cleanliness (judges are not allowed to touch the cars) and the

stories behind the cars and owners. This unique feature opens the door for some amazing stories, really bringing home the camaraderie of Porsche enthusiasts worldwide. One of the favorite cars of the day, a completely restored, Adria Metallic Blue, 1951 356 split-window coupe owned by Steven Berggren, won the 1949-65 356 class. He acquired the car from an elderly neighbor, not even knowing about 356 Porsches when he first bought the car and took on the project. His neighbor sold it to him with the promise that he would restore it. He kept this promise and shared his progress throughout the project with the neighbor, who saw the cosmetic completion of the car before he passed away. It was a touching story and a great example of how the common love of Porsches brings people together.

Another favorite of the day was the 2010 997 GT3 RS of Ortrun Hartinger of Leipzig, Germany, who won the 1999-present GT2, GT3, and GT4 class. Ortrun is currently on a year-long tour of the U.S. with her husband Christien in their “twin” GT3 RSs. Told that car shows in the U.S. are much larger and “more crazy” than those in Germany, their friends recommended they come to the U.S., rent a car, and tour around to experience the car shows. Ortrun and Christien were onboard with coming to the U.S. but nixed the idea of renting a car. If they were going to tour the U.S. they were going to do it in their own beauties! They applied for visas and in February 2020 came over with their two GT3s. They attended Werks Reunion 2020 in Amelia Island, entered their cars into the competition, and the “twins” tied for first place in their division!

Shortly after, the pandemic exploded, things shut down, and after only three weeks in the U.S. they cut their trip short and returned to Germany. After repeated application attempts, they obtained visa extensions, returned with the “twins,” and continued their dream trip touring the U.S. They are documenting their travels with the “twins” on Instagram. (You can follow their entertaining and enviable adventure on Instagram @gt3rs_twin.tour.) At the end of the day, B-Town, the local live band playing hits from the ’60s and ’70s on stage all afternoon, finished out their set with a last-minute request from Vu Nguyen for a special rendition of Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally.” We rode out the afternoon to “Porsche Sally.” There was too much to see and experience in one day, and proof that “It’s not about the cars, it’s about the people.” We can’t wait until the next Werks Reunion! SBR’s Nicolas Liakas Receives Two PCA Awards At the September 4 Cars & Coffee, Nicolas Liakas was honored with two, important awards. First was the 2021 National Newsletter Contest of the Porsche Club of America trophy. He earned second place in Class IV as editor of Der Auspuff in 2019 and early 2020. This recognizes the quality, design, and content of our bimonthly magazine under Nicolas’ editorship. The second was the PCA award for Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year 2020. This recognizes Nicolas’ involvement over the years, including his editorial responsibilities for and continuing contributions to the magazine, both in photos and the written word, his organizing and leading drives and multi-day excursions, and his high level of participation in all that our region does. We all benefit from his involvement and friendship. Thank you, Nick!

Arches National Park

t was a fantastic adventure undertaken by 23 SBR members in 12 Porsches of all types. September 14 was the departure date with a route that launched in Moorpark, included a lunch stop in Loughlin, Nevada, and ended in Flagstaff, Arizona. That was the first out of seven days and six nights on our tour that covered more than 2,000 miles. We spent our first night in Flagstaff: no touring, just a casual meal at our hotel. The second day, however, was full of anticipation as we passed Tuba City on our way to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Arizona. Each of us was amazed at the landscape! (Plus, it was entertaining to find the owner of a luxury purse that contained financial resources, requiring personal attention and effort. The owner soon appeared and claimed her fortune.) We arrived in Moab, Utah, later that afternoon and immediately explored the town and its surroundings. We had looked forward to spending the next day at Utah’s Arches National Park, but by the time we approached the entrance gate there was a long line of vehicles waiting to get in. We finally made our way to Delicate Arch where no parking was available. A ranger waived us on, so we viewed the section known as Windows and another for the Delicate Arch. Many stops were made at sites such as Balancing Rock. Although most of us were tuckered out by late afternoon, some returned to Delicate Arch, found plenty of parking, and went on the three-mile round trip hike to the Arch. By dinner time we were exhausted, and that was cured by the consumption of ice-cold beer! On our fourth day we were awed by the mystery of Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah, a site that evokes numerous emotions. It’s an interesting story about ranchers and wild horses, but “you have to see it to believe it” and no further comment here as a result. Adjacent to the state park you enter the mysterious Canyonlands National Park, about 33 miles from Moab. We climbed high, we strolled low, and every trail was an adventure. All of us have numerous memories of climbing humongous boulders and going to the edge of ledges and cliffs!

An executive proposal, supported by 100% of the participants, directed us to a site not on the agenda: Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The effort was well worth it as we gawked at the well-preserved ancestral Pueblo Indian cliff dwellings occupied over 700 years. Again, hikes were required to vista points, but they afforded spectacular views of the historic dwellings. The area’s history captured our imagination. The fifth day’s drive to Canyon de Chelly National Monument was marred by a sand storm that enveloped our convoy. Thankfully, the sand was very light, meaning no stones or rocks were kicked up and we made it through without any serious or visible damage. Nonetheless, the hearts of our members raced until the winds passed. The final day of touring directed us to the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site in Arizona, considered a meeting ground of two cultures: the Navajo and the settlers who came to the area to trade. Descendants of one pioneer family include the creator of the Hubbell Telescope and other exceptional creations and inventions. On our final day of touring, we visited the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert national parks in Arizona. The colors of the rock-hard trunks and the desert colors in the background created a kaleidoscope of nature’s efforts. Contrast this with our visit to Winslow, Arizona, which had us “standin’ on a corner,” as go the lyrics of Jackson Browne’s and Glenn Frey’s Take It Easy! Yes, it’s true, a week with the majesty of the Southwest was a week to remember. Nicolas Liakas is past editor of Der Auspuff. n our first trip to Europe in 2015, our destination was the birthplace of Porsche, the tiny town of Gmünd in southern Austria. Once off the autobahn, the route to the town is picturesque and things seem to go back in time. You find your way to the private Porsche Museum of Helmut Pfeifhover. Greeting you is the front half of a Porsche Typ 356 Gmünd above the doorway. Inside is almost beyond description: all types of Porsches and Porsche creations from 1900 to today! I was overwhelmed. On my first visit I met Helmut, the proprietor. He didn’t speak much English, so I showed him a picture of my ‘58 356A Super Coupe. His eyes lit up and it was instant recognition. “Ja! Ja! Is this yours?” “Yes indeed,” I replied. It was the beginning of a treasured friendship and mutual admiration of something that fills our lives with joy—Porsches! Each year thereafter, Mindy and I would trek to Gmünd, stay with a family at an Agroturismo, and visit Helmut and his son Christoph. In 2018, when I approached the front desk, Helmut wasn’t there. I asked about his whereabouts. “Oh, he comes in later; he has trouble walking now,” I was told. Later, Helmut and his son Christoph were kind enough to tell me the fascinating account of how Helmut got interested in Porsches. A nine-year-old Helmut was attending his grandfather’s livestock across the street from the rundown sawmill when he heard a sound. It was an automobile. Rarely did anything but an army vehicle come to Gmünd in the fall of 1944. As the noise grew louder, Helmut spotted a thing so strange it could have come from Mars. It was a VW Typ 60-64 K10 Berlin-to-Rome Racer! A well-dressed young man stepped out of the vehicle as Helmut stood in utter awe. Ferry Porsche was there to consider moving his father’s business from Stuttgart to this remote location to avoid destruction by the 8th US Air Force. Soon after, men and machinery moved into the old sawmill. Young Helmut grew to know the kids of the workers there and spied on their creations. After the War ended, things got even more interesting. Men were testing new and amazing cars. One day a car came out that was to become Porsche 356 #001, a mid-engine roadster. A coupe soon followed and young Helmut was smitten. One can only imagine what it was like a few years later for a 13-year-old boy to watch as the first, hand-hammered 50 coupes were built and tested in the nearby mountains. Then, in 1950, everyone left and the old sawmill became an unwanted eye sore. Time passed, Helmut grew, and his fascination for Porsche took the form of ownership. Years of neglect and progress took its toll on the old sawmill complex and the once famous buildings disappeared. Finally, only one structure remained: the Design Center. It was to be bulldozed and Helmut was horrified by that prospect. He inquired about who owned the building and found that the mayor held title. Helmut begged the mayor not to destroy such a historically

significant building, but the mayor held no admiration for its history. He told Helmut, “If you want to preserve it, YOU pay for the upkeep!” Helmut did for over a decade. Finally, the mayor sold the building—“the Holy or Holies”—to Helmut, who subsequently restored it. To show how important this feat of personal dedication was, two days before his death, Ferry Porsche arrived at Helmut’s museum. He told Helmut “We are automobile makers, we have to think of the future! You saved our past!” The building is a monument to excellence in design and is the only physical building of a major automotive builder I know of where they can say, “we started here!”

I had driven by the small building year after year, wishing I could go inside, but it’s closed to the public. Then, after four trips, I was alarmed by Helmut’s condition. Once at home I thought to myself, “what would aid my friend without insulting him?” One of Helmut’s prize possessions is a ‘58 Black 356A Carrera Speedster. I had an old road racing trophy with a Speedster model on top of it. I cut off the Speedster and mounted it on a telescoping, camera-pod leg. As a cane, this might afford Helmut the stability to move freely and be something he could see that met his passion. I sent it off to Austria. When I arrived the next year, Christoph met me and asked if I would like a personal tour of the “Holy of Holies.” Needless to say, I was thrilled!

We set a time the next day and Christoph and Helmut took me and Mindy through the building. Words can’t convey how deeply honored we felt. Christoph described each room. “This is Dr. Porsche’s and Ferry’s office. This is Erwin Komenda’s studio and his drafting board.” “This is the ACTUAL one?” I asked. “Yes this is the actual table on which he drew up the 356!” There was a blueprint on the board dated March 1948. Mindy snapped photos of everything as we walked through. It was overwhelming, to say the least. Of the millions of Porsche lovers, how fortunate I was to have such an experience! A Visit to Angel Martinez’s Collection

iving in Santa Barbara for several years, I was aware that club member Angel Martinez had some interesting Porsches. I did not know the extent of his collection until Editor Dennis Power wrote a piece about it in the January/February 2021 issue of Der Auspuff (see page 10 of that edition). Over

the next few months, Angel and I worked out a visit for a limited number of club members. On a gorgeous, mid-September Saturday, 25 Porsches and 36 participants set off from Santa Barbara’s Leadbetter Beach to view the collection.

Our first stop was in nearby Goleta at the Paddock Motor Club. After I introduced him, Angel spoke about the Paddock Club and how and why he collects Porsches. Martinez opened the facility as a shop for people to work on their own older Porsches. Master mechanic Joe Schneider is often on hand to assist. Angel also spoke about his initial attraction to Porsches and how important Porsche is as a brand and that the company never forgets it. He related how he acquired some of his cars and of his interaction with fellow collectors. The group spent time looking at the cars in the shop and talking with Angel and Joe about various models and restoration processes. The group then moved on to Ojai to see the rest of the collection. The route took us on a Santa Barbara backroad (SR-192) through Montecito and Carpin-

teria. We then took SR-150 up to Ojai. Angel keeps the rest of his collection in a specially designed garage that includes three lifts for double-decker storage. This part of the trip was more informal. The group spent a relaxed time looking at the cars, talking among ourselves, and asking Angel and Joe questions on restorations of the various cars. In addition to his several Porsches, Angel has two Alfa Romeos, a Simon Templar Volvo, and a very souped-up 1953 Chevy BelAir convertible reminiscent of older American cars in his native Cuba, along with a collection of bicycles. NOMINATIONS: 2022 SBR BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTED POSITIONS Report by: Rod Hersberger

It is almost November and that means it is time to elect the Club’s officers for 2022. The Nominations Committee has put forth the following slate of candidates, but write-in votes are also welcome. According to the Region’s current by-laws, the term for all elected officers is two years, with a two-term limit. Here are short biographies of the candidates. Rod Hersberger – President Rod is a retired academic administrator from the CSU. He and his wife, Susan, live in Santa Barbara and they also have a family home in Virginia Beach. They travel extensively, often to visit their two children and three grandchildren. Rod currently drives a 2019 718 GTS Boxster. He has been a PCA and SBR member since 2006. Steve Doll – Vice President Steve’s first Porsche was a used 914 after college when he couldn’t afford a 356. Since those days he has owned over 60 cars and lately some fun Porsches. He and Caroline picked up their GT4 in Germany back in 2016 and have enjoyed a 68 911L for a few years as well. A big part of Steve's life has been community service and involvement. He is currently on the boards of the Pier Foundation, Visitors and Convention Bureau, Ventura Lions, Rotary, and the Ventura Land Trust Tom Sutphen – Secretary Tom is seeking his second term as Secretary. He bought his first Porsche in 1967, a 1963 356 Super. He joined PCA and the Santa Barbara Region in 2008. He spent most of his professional career in real estate, which was book-ended by teaching and owning a fast casual restaurant. He has served on both national and local nonprofit boards. Tom continues to volunteer for local nonprofits. His current Porsche has almost 190,000 miles on the odometer. Howard Rubenstein – Treasurer Howard purchased his first Porsche and joined PCA and the Santa Barbara Region in 2012. He has organized several club events and served three terms as Secretary. He seeks to serve his second full term as Treasurer.
