THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER I asked our motorsports chair Glenn Crawford to use some of this column to promote driver education on the track driving our favorite car. Here is what he has to say: What beautiful, euphonious and functional family car can you drive to the office, school, and grocery store during the week, and on a real race track during the weekends? If you said "Porsche," you are correct! We all have a current comfort range with our cars, some stay in the garage and get caressed with a cloth diaper, some are shown, some are driven for daily chores, and some get time on the track. Why not all of the above? Why not try something new? Why should you participate in driving events? Lots of reasons! How about we start with becoming a better, safer driver, literally protecting the lives and property of all around you. How? Skill increases with guided practice. PCA provides FREE coaching from nationally accredited instructors at every event! They help you safely discover and enjoy your capabilities. When should you come out? Check our website for the next available event. Reach out to our Motorsport Chairman Glenn Crawford (1gunk@sbcglobal.net) for help, guidance or more information.

The club continues to have great attendance at our twice-monthly Cars and Coffee. Some spectacular weather on recent Saturdays has helped the turnout. The monthly drives are always sold out. Our activities cochairs have some exciting new venues for this year, as you’ll see in our Activities Calendar on page 3 and in the fliers elsewhere in the magazine. On November 15, courtesy of Porsche Santa Barbara, six of us got to spend the morning at the Porsche Experience Center in Carson. You will find the story and photos on pages 22 and 23. And traditions start again. After a year off because of COVID, the club was able to resume its traditional holiday brunch. There was a full house of members and guests in attendance at the festive Spanish Hills Country Club. As always, Doreen Pankow did a marvelous job with the arrangements. I always want to thank our two dealer sponsors— Porsche Santa Barbara and Rusnak/Westlake Porsche— as well as our many advertisers for their support. As we begin 2022, I hope COVID is in the rear-view mirror for you and your families, and that you join one of our many events. Best wishes for a safe 2022.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK DENNIS POWER An editor is always caught with surprises, invariably just before a publication is to go to press. Occasionally, those surprises are good ones. I didn’t go to the LA Auto Show this year, so missed out on the technical and design announcements, along with the glitz, that come with these things. The good surprises I received were emails from Nicolas Liakas with a bunch of photos he’d taken at the LA show last fall. No story to tell, just some fine images of the things one misses when they don’t attend the show. I’ve selected a few of the photos and scattered them at the bottom of the page. Not an encyclopedic assemblage to be sure, but a taste of what I missed. The fall of 2021 has been busy. In this issue you’ll find coverage of the Mt. Wilson drive and tour of the historically significant observatory there, the Holiday Brunch and the announcement of officers for 2022, a drive and shop visits for 356 owners, a day for a lucky few at the Porsche Experience Center, a Greek-themed venture to Petros Winery and Restaurant in the Santa Ynez Valley, and a report from the California Festival of Speed, the last of these events for the foreseeable future.
You can't say the SBR isn’t active, or that it's not fun to own a Porsche. This year is shaping up to be full of great drives and social opportunities as well. Our new Activities Cochairs—Lionel Neff and Art Shinn—have put together these events: a back roads drive with café lunch in January; a scenic drive with fine lunch for our valentine sweethearts in February; and three days and two nights in Monterey in March. And in April, Pam and Jerry Lasnik will have put together the always popular Gimmick Rally. The volunteer efforts that go into organizing and managing these events never ceases to amaze. I should mention, too, that the board has instituted a new way to register and pay for our events. We are using motorsportreg.com. It will be as simple as entering in your web browser the link we publish and signing up online. No more checks to write and registration forms to fill out and mail. Please keep your editor in mind with stories, photos, and good surprises.

VISIT TO MT. WILSON OBSERVATORY By Ron Mulick
Who would have thought? I grew up in the greater Los Angeles area and I knew that Mt. Wilson had TV and radio transmission towers, but had no idea that there was an astronomical observatory there as well.
O
ver the weekend of October 16 and 17, the Santa Barbara Region of PCA met in Moorpark and caravanned 60 miles up CA-2 in the San Gabriel Mountains to the top of Mt. Wilson—an elevation of 5,700 feet. Two days? Well, we had so many interested members that we sought out a second day tour to accommodate all that we could. The caravan was mostly on freeways, but the 4,000-foot climb from La Canada Flintridge to the summit was two-lane, mountain-road driving. As we passed bicycle riders peddling up the grade (not on electric bikes either), we made sure to give them space. The trip up the mountain takes about 15 minutes by car. The Saturday group was about 20 minutes ahead of schedule, so we stopped at a turnout that had a spectacular view of the San Pedro Harbor, where we could see the many cargo ships waiting to be unloaded. Yes, it was a perfect day for viewing So Cal from on high. Mt. Wilson Observatory was founded by George Hale in 1904. Hale realized that at 5,700 feet in elevation and with the thousands of miles of Pacific Ocean just miles away the air would be clear for observing the sun and stars. His first project was to bring a Snow Solar Telescope from the Yerkes Observatory to the clean and sunny skies of Mt. Wilson. This endeavor and others atop the mountain were funded by the Carnegie Institution in Washington. With the addition of other telescopes, many state-of-the-art at the time, Mt. Wilson became the world’s most advanced astronomical research facility, attracting names like Hubble, Pickering, and, yes, even Einstein. Bill Hallier

The solar telescopes and the celestial telescopes are still used today. Even more fascinating, they can be seen as a part of the tour that we took and groups can come at night to look through the lenses themselves. Our docent told us about the “soap opera” relationship between the scientists and investors. As we left to walk to our cars, we speculated that those men were similar to today’s Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. The tour ended when the 100-inch telescope was activated and rotated, drawing praise and wonderment from our members. SBR member Una McNight informed us that according to her Fitbit we walked 9,000 steps, 4 miles, climbed 32 flights of stairs, and burned 1,800 calories, with a resting heart rate of 64 beats per minute. Yet one more benefit of membership in PCA/SBR. It felt great to feel like young adults once again! Ron Mulick joined PCA in 2020. He drives a black 1997 993 Cabriolet.

SBR’s 2021 Holiday Brunch at the Spanish Hills Country Club Story by Doreen Pankow
S
anta Barbara Region members enjoyed their annual holiday brunch at the Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo on Saturday, December 11. Adding to the festivity, country club members stopped by to admire the beautiful array of 59 Porsches that were parked together. The banquet room was beautifully decorated for the season with wreaths, trees, and poinsettias. The tables in the elegant dining room were set with sparkling glasses, silverware, and festive centerpieces. One hundred and ten members arrived with unwrapped toys to be delivered to Santa Barbara’s Unity Shoppe. It was our way to help bring joy to less fortunate children this holiday season. We are especially grateful to member Ron Mulick for delivering these toys to the charity’s headquarters in Santa Barbara.
We began with beverages and time to catch up with our fellow members and friends. We then enjoyed a sumptuous brunch that included breakfast items, an omelet station, grilled tri-tip, grilled salmon, and a variety of salads and desserts. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delicious fare and conversations at our tables.

A Sunday brunch is the perfect time to celebrate the past year’s events and to recognize members’ efforts. Following the meal, President Rod Hersberger went to the podium to acknowledge those who have contributed their time to make the club so successful. He started by graciously mentioning me as the organizer of today’s event. Sponsors Keith Goldberg from Rusnak/Westlake Porsche and Jonathan Price from Porsche Santa Barbara were thanked for their ongoing financial support and the continental breakfasts they provided at the start of many of the club’s tours. Rod gave a brief overview of SBR’s activities in 2021 and thanked the many coordinators, volunteers, and participants who made these successful and fun. The 2021 board members were recognized for their service to the club and it was great to see that five past presidents were in attendance. Also thanked were the several members who provide photographs for our magazine, the website, and Flickr: Steve Geldman, Randy Fishwick, Robert Watt, Gary Krueger, and Bill Hallier, among others. Art Shinn and Lionel Neff, our new activities co-chairs, introduced themselves and with much levity reported on the upcoming 2022 activities.

David Stone then announced the results of the election for 2022 officers: Rod Hersberger, president; Steve Doll, vice president; Tom Sutphen, secretary; and Howard Rubenstein, treasurer. Except for the new activities co-chairs, the rest of the board appointees remain unchanged. David then announced the Man and Woman of the Year and presented the perpetual awards to Dennis Power, SBR’s editor of Der Auspuff, and Membership Chair Sue Kinsling. Both are very well deserved. To thank our members in attendance, dozens of great door prizes were given away that had been donated by Rusnak/Westlake Porsche, Porsche Santa Barbara, Schneider Autohaus, Premier Coach, Ghost Shield, California Tire Company, Lavaggio, Milpas Motors, Lionel Neff, Bob Bassett, and SBR. Rod closed the event by thanking everyone for their support and said that he looks forward to being SBR’s president for another stimulating year in 2022. any members in our region own 356s, but these handmade Porsches built from 1948 to 1965 are not usually seen driving down our highways. We’d planned to have an exclusive drive for 356 owners in 2020, but that was cancelled owing to the pandemic. Happily, we rescheduled a 356-only group drive after the October 2, 2021, Cars & Coffee gathering in Camarillo. It turned out to be a very successful tour. Members and I followed CA-126 along the Santa Clara River east toward Piru, where 356 sheet metal restorer Ellery Engel gave us a personal tour of his shop. We passed from there to another Porsche restorer, Anthony Stoessel, at

L
ast November 10, courtesy of Porsche Santa Barbara, five lucky club members and I were treated to a morning at the Porsche Experience Center (PEC) in Carson. Club member and professional motorsports photographer Steve Geldman joined us to shoot the event. After signing in and attending the drivers’ meeting, we paired into three groups, met our instructors, and headed to the cars. Each instructor had two students in a lead/ follow format, the instructor using a radio to communicate with us. The cars were a Taycan Turbo S and a 911 S, both with PDK. After a few laps, it was fairly easy to remember the braking zones and apexes. The instructor was always teaching us from his lead car. Eventually we switched cars. Beyond the track lapping, we tried a short autocross course, a wet skid pad, a kick plate, and launch control. On the kick plate you approach at about 22 mph and the pad “kicks” out the rear end one way or the other and you have to compensate to regain control. I was successful about half the time. As for launch control, my personal car has it, but I’ve never used it. It really does catapult the car forward with amazing velocity and force. John Gray in the Taycan Turbo S on Ice Hill

The finale was two hot laps with a professional driver in a Turbo S or GT 3. It was a bit “white knuckle” for those two laps. We were all like, “don’t you want to brake already!” The ceramic brakes did their job, though. We were all impressed with the torque, speed, and handling of the Taycan, but did agree that the 911 was much more fun in the track setting. The cockpit and controls are just right. The PDK is fantastic and you feel more involved with the track as the cars are lower and tighter than in the sedan. On behalf of our group, I want to thank Kat Scharphorn for hosting us at the PEC. Most importantly, we greatly appreciate Porsche Santa Barbara general manager Rene Verbrugge for sponsoring our outing.

ome 80 adventurers joined a sparkling cruise in 40 Porches through the Santa Ynez Valley Wine District on November 20, 2021. Our port-of-call was the Petros Restaurant & Winery on Foxen Canyon Road. Petros showcases authentic Hellenic food and wine crafted in the Greek style. We launched our voyage from Dock 402, the Santa Barbara Porsche Dealership, which generously provided a continental breakfast. There, we completed our boarding passes, received our excursion itinerary, and caught up with fellow passengers, while admiring the beautiful Porches on the showroom floor. An early morning fog and marine layer gave way to clear sailing. We set out in two columns on Hwy-101 north along the Santa Barbara Riviera to the Santa Ynez Valley, with its winding roads, vineyards, and horse ranches. Our trip took us past Nojoqui Falls Park and Alisal Ranch to 24
DER AUSPUFF January/February 2022
Solvang and Ballard Canyon, then past the 1889 little red schoolhouse and along the hills and dales of Armour Ranch and Happy Canyon roads, and finally to Foxen Canyon and the vineyards of Petros. We sampled their wine and feasted on a buffet of build-your-own gyros, salad, rice pilaf, tzatziki, melitzanosalata, and baklava, all served by the incomparable Petros’ staff. The Santa Barbara Region is home to six recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) that make world-class wines of distinctive character. The largest concentration of wineries is in the Santa Ynez Valley, a long, east-west corridor with very cool temperatures on the coast that become progressively warmer inland. Several varietals do well in this versatile appellation, including the grapes crafted in the Greek style in Foxen Canyon AVA. The Santa Ynez Wine District has long been a favorite destination for our club.

As cruise director, I'm grateful to deck hand Stan McKnight, assisted by able seamen Nick Liakas and Marty Blumenthal, commodore Rod Hersberger, purser Doreen Pankow, photographers Randall Fishwick, Bill Hallier, and Dennis Power (all located on deck 6), and other crew members who together made up the cruise’s company. And our special thanks to Rene Verbrugge and team at the Santa Barbara Porsche dealership, and Robyn Guzman and staff at Petros Restaurant & Winery. YAMAS!

Story by Dennis Power Photos by Steve Geldman
T
he California Festival of Speed (CFOS) is billed as the Porsche enthusiast’s dream weekend. It is that, along with being the major gathering for Porsche fans who like to race or see semi-professional Club Racing close up. There is nothing else like it in Southern California, and there may not be anything like it in the future. What may be the last time for this event was held this October 30 and 31. I had to go. The first CFOS was held in 2002 and has taken place every year except 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic interfered. The event this year was open to those qualified to participate in PCA Club Racing and Driver’s Education. For others, there was a swap meet, Porsche corral, Porsche displays, a vendor’s row, wonderful food trucks, a mini Autocross, lunchtime track tours, and the opportunity to catch up with friends from throughout Zone 8. The event has race cars, show cars, and can even have your car. I did Time Trials at CFOS from 2012 through 2015 and the Club Race in 2016. Anything on a real track truly gives a Porsche owner an idea of what our cars are capable of, as well as how each of us can get the best out them. Let’s look first at what makes this track special, then at the Festival itself as an example of what makes PCA special, and, finally, why CFOS may never happen again. In 1994, Roger Penske partnered with Kaiser Steel to begin construction of a racetrack on the site of the inactive steel 26
DER AUSPUFF January/February 2022
mill in Fontana. The track was named California Speedway at the time. In 2008, the Southern California Automobile Club bought the naming rights. The two-mile-long, Dshaped oval, along with grandstands, skyboxes, and all of the amenities, saw racing begin in 1997. NASCAR was the big-name stock car racing and sanctioning company that used the track for its series.
In 1999, the infield of the speedway was reconfigured to hold a multipurpose road course, with the straightaways and chicanes that Porsche owners and amateur racers love to negotiate. What's best, and what CFOS uses, is called the "Roval," a combination of the best the track has to offer. The start/finish line is midway on a long, slightly banked curve where speed is gathered. This leads to the highbanked oval where with white knuckles speed can be carefully maintained. The banked oval ends in a short straight that suddenly comes to two sharp turns, one left and then a quick right. From here the infield road course is negotiated. And this, after apexes and a short back-straight comes to the long, front curve where we began. Gripping!
Over time, the Festival itself has been organized and staffed by volunteers from various regions within our Zone 8. Initially, the San Diego Region was involved. In recent years the Grand Prix Region (Long Beach) has taken on the onerous task of arranging the venue, gathering sponsors, such as the Riverside and Ontario Porsche dealers, and organizing the hundreds of volunteers to pull off the weekendlong event. Finally, why might this be the last California Festival of Speed? The International Speedway Corporation owns a number of race tracks, including Auto Club Speedway, which it acquired from Roger Penske in 1999. Plans are underway to reconstruct the facility as a half-mile, highbanked oval fitting inside the footprint of the current layout. While construction is not likely to begin until 2023 or beyond, there is no other facility in Southern California that would be able to host the event. Suesan Way Carter, the chair of this year's Festival, told me that over the last several years, the Festival management team has realized that regardless of their contributions to make this a very special Porsche event, attendance has continued to wane no matter in which month the event is scheduled. This management team has decided that they will no longer continue, even if the facility is available for another year or two. Suesan added, "we've had an amazing run of twenty years, and a lot of great luck as far as safety on the track. We are proud that our regions could combine to achieve such a production for so many years starting in 2002 under wonderful leadership like Michael Dolphin, Ron Mistak, Skip Carter, who to this day has both feet all in as always, and the late great Vince Knauf." Suesan recalled, "nearly 15,000 members of Zone 8 have enjoyed the Festival and have actively participated, with thousands and thousands of volunteer hours over the years, making it the biggest Porsche event in the Southwest It was a fabulous event for a long time – now Zone 8 is off to new adventures."

Monterey Spring Fling March 22-24, 2022
M
onterey is one of California’s most scenic and historic coastal destinations, a place to explore and enjoy. From the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to Spanish-era adobes and John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. We’ve planned a great route to get there, a lunch stop along the way, a fine hotel to house us, and an ideal seafood restaurant for a group dinner. And on the second day we include a visit to Canepa, an automotive nirvana in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Springtime also brings classic drives through verdant hills, a pageant of wildflowers, and the rugged Big Sur coast.
Day 1 starts with a drive on Highway 101, lunch in Paso Robles at Paso Market Walk (many restaurants to chose from), a tour inland on CA-25 east of Pinnacles National Monument, a rest stop in Hollister, and a run into Monterey from the north via CA-1. Lodging for our group is at the Victorian Inn in the Cannery Row neighborhood of Monterey Harbor. Our group dinner will be at the Fish Hopper Restaurant (700 Cannery Row, Suite K), a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Day 2 has us venturing north on CA-1 along Monterey Bay to the restoration shop, showroom, and sports and race

car collection of Canepa in Scotts Valley. Canepa is where the world’s best automotive artisans work to preserve important road cars and competition vehicles for generations to come. After returning to Monterey for the evening, we are free to dine at any of Monterey’s fine restaurants. Day 3 is for the trip home with a drive down CA-1 through Big Sur and a stop for brunch at Nepenthe. This trip is limited to 20 Porsches and 40 people. We’ve negotiated a discounted price for the hotel and the first evening’s group dinner. Cost per couple is $717. This includes: two nights at the hotel (king-size bed, double occupancy, afternoon wine and cheese, sit-down breakfast, underground parking, and taxes); the first night’s group dinner (taxes and tip included); the SBR activity fee; and registration fees. Our discounts required a nonrefundable contract. Therefore, refunds will not be available to participants unless a couple on the wait-list takes your place. To register, go to https://www.motorsportreg.com. Once there, in the section Find Nearby Events enter “Monterey Spring Fling.” Click on our event and you will be where you can sign up. SBR’S GIMMICK RALLY S a t u r d a y, A p r i l 2 3 , 2 0 2 2
Our drive will take us on some roads just perfect for Porsches and last somewhat over two hours of attentive driving and beautiful scenery. No racing here— only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winners’ circle. The top three teams as determined by the highest number of correct answers will be our prize winners: a bonding experience for you and your navigator. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator (not a Lincoln), and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen will come in handy, too. Meeting time is 8:30 a.m. at Rusnak Porsche in Thousand Oaks (3839 Auto Mall Drive). There will be complimentary coffee and pastries awaiting us. The rally will end at beautiful Borchard Community Park in Newbury Park where we will enjoy a great barbecue lunch by Q-Time BBQ. The total cost is only $40 per person, including lunch, beverages, and the SBR activity fee. These are always popular events. RSVP early by filling out the form below and submitting it with your check. To register, go to www.motorsportreg.com. Once there, in the section Find Nearby Events enter “SBR’s Gimmick Rally.” Click on our event and you will be where you can sign up.
