THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER I w a n t t o a c k n o w l e d g e C h e t Y a b i t s u ’s p a s s i n g o n E a s t e r S u n d a y . In the May issue there was a story about
the Certificate of Appreciation that Dave Stone arranged. He was able to present the certificate to Joan and Chet before Chet died. You will find an obituary on page 39. In May I had the great honor of presenting Joe Schneider with a Lifetime Achievement Award. This Porsche Meister is unique among our membership for his mechanical expertise and nearly 60 years of involvement with PCA. Congratulations Joe! Several times in this space, I have taken inspiration from other magazines like Panorama, Christophus, or Excellence. The April issue of Panorama provided another opportunity with Matthew Katz’s sublime 718 RSK Spyder gracing the cover. These lithe, nimble cars attracted top talent and garnered many class wins until Porsche entered the LMP world with the mighty 917. I suppose this is heresy among the rear engine, air cooled only purists, but the only three Porsches I have owned were mid-engine. The heritage and lineage of my previous Cayman S and my current 718 GTS Boxster are clear from Katz’s beauty. Many of us
will recognize the photo stops as being from the northern region of Malibu on the PCH. PCA member Rick Principe once again graciously invited SBR members to a Cars & Coffee at his car condos in Westlake Village. Quite a few of us attended. This is a big boy event with 918s, Carrera GTs, GT2 RSs and all manner of recent and vintage high performance Porsches. Of course, there was the odd McLaren, several Lambos and even a La Ferrari. My favorite, though, was the most beautiful green-over-green 300 SL. Oh, and on the way home on 101 north we saw an ultra-rare Koenigsegg Agera RS Phoenix. Evidently this one-off car is looking for a new garage. Speaking of mid-engine Porsche race cars, Rennsport VII will be back on the west coast in 2023 and it will be at Laguna Seca so many of us can enjoy it. What other venue can attract 1,000 Porsches? September 28 to October 1 are the dates. The club has a good slate of events the second half of this year. Please attend one and make new friends. Happy Motoring!!
Board of Directors Meetings SBR’s Board of Directors meets on the second Wednesday of every oddnumbered month beginning at 6:30 p.m. At this time, the meetings are held online via Zoom. fire on one of the cargo decks. The ship went NUC (“not under command”), but the AIS (“automatic identification system”) transponders were still on and showed the ship drifting eastward. By March 1, the ship was on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Felicity Ace was a roll-on/roll-off cargo ship built in Japan in 2005, owned and operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and registered in Panama. She’d sailed from Emden, Germany, on February 10 carrying nearly 4,000 Volkswagen Group cars, including Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley,
and some 1,100 Porsche models. She was headed for North Kingstown, Rhode Island. The day the distress signal was issued, the ship’s master reported that all 22 crew members were evacuated. By the next day, the crew was in lifeboats with some rescued by the oil tanker Resilient Warrior. All were airlifted by helicopter to Faial Island in the Azores. The plan was then to tow the ship to the nearest island. The AIS was still on and the drift also monitored by a tug and a Portugal Navy patrol ship. By February 19, a local patrol boat arrived on the scene with the initial salvage team. By the 21st, two large tugs with firefighting equipment were on their way from Gibraltar. Electric cars were on board and it’s known that their lithium-ion batteries usually burn very violently and hotly and cannot be extinguished by water alone. This became the main problem during the salvage operation. It was not known if the EVs were the cause of the fire. Three days later, two large tugs continued to spray the vessel with water cannons to cool the hull and the plan was to tow the vessel to the Bahamas. Two tugs from the salvage team were expected to arrive and when conditions were safe would provide an assessment of salvage and firefighting plans. At 9:00 a.m. on March 1, the local salvage team radioed that the Felicity Ace listed to starboard and sank. A risk-modeling analyst estimated the value of the goods aboard the ship at $438 million, of which $401 million were cars, and Volkswagen’s losses at $155 million. That value now rests in 9,800 feet of water.

he morning of April 23 was beautiful and the Porsche participants were ready for fun and adventure. Our starting point was Rusnak Porsche in Westlake Village where we were treated to a fine spread of pastries and fruit, compliments of the dealer. At 8:45 a.m. it was time for the Gimmick Rally pep talk. It was here that we made sure the folks were aware of what their morning would be like, including suggestions for success: dos and don'ts 101. DO set your odometer to zero starting out. DON’T backtrack if you miss any clues. DO turn when you are supposed to. But, DON’T go too fast or you’ll miss the important clues. And, above all, DON’T ask
10
DER AUSPUFF July/August 2022
SIRI for help, as she did not pay to enter the rally and her PCA dues may be in arrears. Porsche people are principled! Then, at 9 o’clock sharp, it was “drivers, start your engines!” and we sent them off on their adventure, each with a packet of clues and directions. Our job was then to go to the final destination, Borchard Community Park in Newbury Park, to put on the tablecloths for lunch. That was when we experienced the nail-biting, worrisome, wait-and-see for a few hours, as we have done every time. This was our tenth Gimmick Rally and it never gets easy to wait for the first car to come in. Would anyone get lost and call us? Would there be an accident or a roadblock?
Finally, after almost three hours, the cars started coming in. We were ready to handle the most pressing request of the arriving teams: where are the restrooms? We have discovered over these ten years creating Gimmick Rally routes that our fellow Porsche enthusiasts are fun loving, intelligent, and appreciative of our efforts. It is why we keep doing it. There were some exciting, out-of-the-way drives that most folks were completely unaware of before today; Box Canyon and Lost Canyon roads off of CA-118 were two of these. We also staged a visit to the wonderful Chumash Museum in Thousand Oaks, where participants left their
cars for a walk to test their knowledge of Native American plants. Once at Borchard Park, we all enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch prepared by our long-time caterer, Q-Time BBQ from Ojai. After lunch it was time for all to check and grade their answers, and hope for one of the three cash prizes. It was obvious that some clues were more difficult than others. For example, Admirable Culinary Half = Bad Ass Tacos and Amorous 2πr = Love Circle. Others were so easy we were almost embarrassed to use them, such as SpaceX uses this = Rocket and Rooty Tooty - Fresh & Fruity = IHOP.

After the totals were counted, we awarded the top three scoring teams their prizes. Out of a possible 109 clues, here are the winners and their scores: • First prize ($50) Amy Smith and Ian Anderson with 103 points • Second prize ($30) Jeff and Gina Moore with 98 points • Third prize ($20) Larry and Suzanne Stoops with 95 points
Top four photos: Lunch and camaraderie following the drive and tallying the score sheets. The winners (l to r): First place, Amy Smith and Ian Anderson; second place, Jeff and Gina Moore; and third place, Larry and Suzanne Stoops. Congratulations to all!
Another exciting Gimmick Rally is in the books. It is always a great day to have fun with our fellow Porsche enthusiasts and drive some neat, windy roads. Throw in a delicious BBQ lunch and some challenging brain work, and what more can you ask for?
Jerry and Pam Lasnik joined PCA in 2007. They drive a 2013 Boxster in Aqua Blue Metallic.

resident Rod Hersberger and the editor had the pleasure of talking with Joe at the Paddock Motor Club in April. Here is an excerpt from our conversation.
Rod Hersberger: During my term as SBR president, I’ve been wanting to recognize the work of some of our exceptional members, people who for many years have contributed to the success of the club, held various key offices, and regularly show up at events. Joe, for the last nearly six decades you’ve done all of these, as well as maintaining many members' cars. In recognition of this, the board is recognizing you with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Here, at Angel Martinez’s Paddock Motor Club, and where you continue to work on cars, we’d like to take a few moments to get some of your thoughts on your career and service to the club. Joe Schneider: It’s always been my pleasure to be part of the club and, of course, work on the cars we love. Editor: Joe, you left a promising career in aviation engineering with NASA to work on Porsches, first with a partner in a small facility in Culver City and then at a larger location in Los Angeles, eventually moving to Santa Barbara in 1971. You founded Schneider Autohaus, moved it around four times, and in 1987 settled on the current De La Vina Street location. If a young person came to you and said he loves cars and wanted to start an independent auto repair business, what would you advise? Joe: [Laughter.] I’d say “don’t.” The auto maintenance business has changed significantly over the years. Just wanting to work on cars, which we did in the early days, is not enough. Now you have to be a business person. You can’t do everything: accounting, operations, marketing. The car guys are now on the shop floor, not running a business. It’s also gotten more complicated in what you work on. Maintenance, of course, started with just the 356, then the 911, and today there are multiple models, all more complicated. Nowadays a shop must spend a lot of time and money on training its mechanics to handle the variety. Editor: You’ve experienced firsthand the dramatic changes in the auto repair business with increasing reliance on technology, first with sophisticated electronic systems in the 1980s to meet clean air regulations till now when most all systems seem to rely on computer chips. What do you think will be needed to keep the more analog cars on the road and do you see auto maintenance splitting into two separate businesses: one analog, the other digital? Joe: What we are seeing are more specialty shops to keep the old cars on the road, and some have been around for a long time. And there is always a need to put 356s and early 911s in show condition. This won’t be done at major service centers. I should note that it’s much more efficient to work on today’s cars. A brake job on a Cayenne is in and out in a few hours and costs as much as major repairs on a 356.
With these specialty shops you have a love of early cars that for practical reasons can’t be duplicated at the big shops. Editor: For you, personally, among the various cars you’ve owned, what’s been your favorite? Joe: Oh, gosh, the 356s I’ve owned have been very special, but the air-cooled 911, I love it! Each car I’ve had has been special in some ways. The orange 911 you mentioned you’ll see a lot at SBR events. The 944 Turbo, now in the shop temporarily, spent a lot of time on the track. And with this car and on a race course is where I learned to be a better driver, both on the track and on the street. Among the advice I got from an instructor is that gaining skills at racing brought down your times faster than just spending money to upgrade the equipment. Editor: Here you are at Angel Martinez’s Paddock Motor Club and while you have formally turned over Schneider Autohaus to the very capable Paula and Henry Hinck, what are your plans going forward? Joe: It’s ideal for me to be able to work on the models of cars I know and return them to the owners in better shape than when they brought them to me. Like here at the Paddock Motor Club, it can be all about working on the cars and not worrying about running a business. It’s fun. Rod: It is our honor to recognize you in this way on behalf of all of us in the Santa Barbara Region of the Porsche Club of America. We look forward to seeing you and Kathie on our tours and social events. Thank you.
In 2003, David Stone wrote a fine story with more details of Joe’s trajectory in life, from his days as an engineer to the time of the article that appeared in the September 2003 issue of Der Auspuff. Readers can access that full article here: https://pcasb.org/images/J_Schneider_09_2003.pdf

t was a beautiful Saturday morning and eighty-seven members and guests met in Camarillo, excited about the opportunity to drive their Porsches on some fun, twisty, back roads. After the driver’s safety meeting, I led the group on the 50-mile drive to our destination in Ojai, a town first made famous by the 1937 movie Lost Horizon. Ojai is set in a valley in the Topatopa Mountains and the city has a village-like center dotted with art galleries, health spas, and New Age shops. Our forty-seven Porsches—a variety of colors, styles, and models—made an awesome sight as we drove through the Santa Rosa Valley into Moorpark. We regrouped along Spring Road and then sprinted through the twisty curves on Stockton road and down the steep descent on Balcom Canyon Road. We then took Mountain Road into Santa Paula where the passengers breathed a sigh of relief and could relax for a moment. On Hwy 150, we enjoyed more twisty turns as we traveled past huge ranches and then enjoyed some beautiful green vistas as we approached our destination. As we arrived at Boccali’s Pizza & Pasta restaurant, we were directed into their parking area after making a tight right turn from the highway. An array of picnic tables and colorful umbrellas were set up on the lawn to accommodate our members and guests. Everyone appreciated the opportunity

to stretch their legs as they went through the serving line where delicious salad, lasagna, pizzas, pasta, garlic bread, and beverages were ready for us. By the volume of conversation, it was obvious everyone was enjoying each other’s company and the opportunity to get to know several of our new members. SBR photographers Randy Fishwick and Bill Hallier took a lot of group and individual photos throughout our lunch and Gary Krueger took photos as we came down through the sweeping curves into Ojai (see cover photo). Many thanks to those attending for your continued support and participation on this drive as our events wouldn’t be any fun without all of you!

f you are a fellow Porsche and racing enthusiast, following Porsche Motorsports Racing is an exciting pastime. Porsche has been racing since the 1950s and it is probably safe to say they are the car manufacturer with more podium wins than any other brand. One major racing series in which Porsche participates is organized by the International Motor Sport Association (IMSA). From April 29 through May 1, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca hosted the fourth of twelve exciting racing weekends on the 2022 IMSA schedule. The IMSA WeatherTech Championship Race featured four classes of cars: Daytona Prototype International (DPi), Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2), GT Daytona Pro (GTD Pro), and GT Daytona (GTD). What makes IMSA racing unique is not only the variety of cars running in an event, but that all the classes run at the same time. The easiest way to identify the various classes is by the color-coded car numbers, side mirrors, and rear wing end-plates. In addition to the color-coding, each car has an LED display indicating the real-time track position within their class and with the latest data transmitted directly from timing and scoring. Also happening over that same weekend was a season-opening doubleheader: the Lamborghini Super Trofeo
18
DER AUSPUFF July/August 2022
North America and the Michelin Pilot Challenge featuring Grand Sport (GS) and Touring Cars (TCR). For Porsche enthusiasts, the highlight of the weekend had to be the Porsche Carrera Cup North America with thirty-two cars competing in the field. Two, forty-minute timed races were held: one on Saturday afternoon and one on Sunday morning. All cars are identical: same make, model, and generation, with no technical advantage. Driver skill and team strategy are the determining factors. Parker Thompson dominated the weekend winning both races in the Number 9 Porsche GT3 Cup car. Throughout the weekend, before, during, and after the races, a stroll through the paddock is where more action could be observed. From car tuning, preparation, and setup, to simulator training and tech inspections, to podium celebrations, and so much more, there is always something for everyone to see. To follow along with all the action visit IMSA.com and check out the schedule or latest race results! Robert Watt has been a member of PCA since 2009. He drives a 2008 Cayman in Speed Yellow.

pecial Edition cars. We’ve all heard of them: Anniversary models, Limited editions, Indy 500 Pace Car editions, some models even named SE or Special Edition, and so on…and on. After finishing up and publishing my The IROC Porsches book, I still felt I had another Porsche title in me. But it had to be something different, not done by anyone else or before. It only took a bit of research to assess how many different limited production special models Porsche had dreamt up and produced over the years. I realize to most reading this magazine, every Porsche is special at some level or another. And I agree with that, although some are more limited and/or special. My publisher for this project, CarTech Books, and I identified criteria that best described the notion. Even though GT2s and 3s and such are very special, technically, they are production models – built in some (often limited) quantity and generally offered to the open marketplace. We felt the notion of “special edition” really encompasses models that are, or were, produced in the few, the small batch, or even a slightly larger handful, but not a quantity produced spec. It proved a marvelous and oft-times mystic pursuit. Many I knew about, but some number were mostly fromscratch discoveries. Models and cars I’d never heard of from markets all over the world. Ever heard of the 356 America Roadster? This is a lithe, flyweight, handsome, curvy aluminum bodied roadster built primarily for racing. How many? Just 17. How much? Today, $4.0 million might buy one. Or Glockler Porsches? And Birthday and Anniversary models that I previously knew nothing about. Fun, fun stuff.

I also took the liberty of including some one-offs and concepts—from Porsche’s own studios and from independent designers and coachbuilders—you’d be surprised how many Italian Carrozzeria have designed and built their own spin on the 911. Of course most remained one-offs, so they don’t purely meet the definition of a run of “editions.” But some are so interesting I felt readers would enjoy them no matter. Ditto some of the products of post-market concerns such as RUF, Singer Vehicle Design, Guntherwerks, and others. Sometimes fabulous, sometimes strange, yet always compelling at some level. I know that this comes off as something of a plug for my new book, and it is, so please pardon me for that, but I felt the cars and backstories were so interesting that you would enjoy knowing about them.
An undertaking of this magnitude wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Porsche’s Corporate Archives in Stuttgart, most particularly in the form of Chief Archivist Tobias Mauler, who researched and provided irreplaceable photography to help illustrate the book. I photographed the cars where and when I could find them, but a majority of the old design studio and auto show imagery came from Porsche’s deep and well organized archive. I’m also particularly appreciative of the incomparable Magnus Walker, likely today’s best known Porsche shaman and stylemaker. He was an absolute gem to work with. The Urban Outlaw himself was generous enough to contribute the book’s foreword, and encompasses a bit of his history, and many interesting thoughts about Porsche and special editions. Thanks Mags—much appreciated.

TWO-DOOR TWISTIES A DAY ON CALIFORNIA BACK ROADS WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2022
The Challenge. This will be a full day of driving some of California’s best back roads, especially for sports cars. Two-doors only on this one: four-doors and SUVs will have earned a drive of their own down the road. The route. Gathering time is 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, at SBR member Angel Martinez’s Paddock Motor Club in Goleta: 5730 Thornwood Dr. Getting underway at 7:00 a.m., the route will take us inland and north on mostly two-lane roads. This route caters to drivers who enjoy all manner of twists and turns and ups and downs—decreasing radius, off camber, blind cresting. This drive will have it all. Highway 58 is a delight. And a midweek drive should mean that the roads will be ours. A possible route is shown on the small map, but we will check it out closer to the event and let those registered know the details. The drive alone is five and a half hours. We are counting on another hour and a half for gas and pit stops, giving us an arrival time in

nown internationally for its collection of French automobiles and grand prix cars, the Mullin Automotive Museum also houses Art Deco furniture and contemporary paintings and sculpture. This tour is not to be missed. We begin at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast at Aloha Steakhouse in Ventura. At 9:30 we’ll depart for the 20-minute drive to the Mullin Museum for our tour. Docents will be on hand to answer questions and give us insights into the collection. We’ll see some of the most beautifully styled and amazingly engineered French cars ever built. The collection pays homage to the Art Deco and Machine Age eras when magnificent automobiles and art were created and celebrated. Aloha Steakhouse is located at 354 S. California Street, Ventura. We’ll park at the top level of the parking structure adjacent to the restaurant. The buffet breakfast will follow. Bring your parking structure ticket to the restaurant to have it validated. We’ll drive directly to the museum after breakfast and have till noon to enjoy what’s on display. The address for the museum is 1421 Emerson Ave., Oxnard. Cost for the event (breakfast, the museum entrance fee, and the various registration and activity fees) is $49 per person. To register, go to www.msreg.com/ Mullintour2022. We’re limited to 75 guests. Questions about the event?: contact Mike Sagraves at basserksb@aol.com. Questions about registering?: contact Art Shinn at artshinn@gmail.com. “We’re focusing on coachbuilders because back in the day, if you were a person of means, you wouldn’t go to a company like Delahey or Delage and just buy one of their cars, you’d go to a showroom, decide what manufacturer you wanted, and then turn to one of these ecoachbuilders to design a body to go on the chassis —Mullin Museum from the manufacturer of your choice.” A few rules to keep in mind: Please keep your distance from the automobiles and, of course, don’t touch the cars or artifacts. Bags, backpacks, purses, umbrellas, pets, strollers, monopods, tripods, or anything that might accidentallly damage objects in the collection are not allowed, nor are food or drinks. We want to be good guests.

PORSCHES AND PLANES AT THE SANTA PAULA AIRPORT Sunday, October 2, 2022
You will want to make sure that your P-Car is detailed and shiny for this event. Our cars will be presented to the public at the Santa Paula Airport on Sunday, October 2. The group starts with an exclusive, buffet breakfast at the Aloha Steakhouse, our favorite on-thebeach restaurant in Ventura. We then caravan to the Santa Paula Airport where we’ll park on the taxiway. The airport is open to the public the first Sunday of each month, and while the visitors drool over our cars, we can take a self-guided tour of the hangers, learning about famous past pilots and the history of the airport. Okay, if that is not enough, let’s park a vintage aircraft on the tarmac and you can pose your car next to it and take photos. We will also have a few dedicated SBR photo buffs to take professional-quality pictures. The Aviation Museum of Santa Paula consists of what they call the “Chain of Hangars,” each hangar exhibiting the owner’s unique personal collections. The
private displays include antique, classic, and experimental aircraft; automobiles, including race cars; motorcycles; an enormous antique radio, juke box, and phonograph collection; paintings and photographs; model aircraft; and a variety of aviation artifacts. Breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m. The restaurant is located at 364 S California Street, Ventura. Park with the group at the top of the parking structure adjacent to the restaurant. We plan to leave the restaurant at 10:00 and arrive at the airport about 10:30. The airport’s address is 28 Wright Taxi Way, Santa Paula. We’ll enter at the 9 Eagles entrance and park on the 9 Eagles and Curtiss taxiways. Registration. The cost for the event, including breakfast, is $35 per person, $10 of which will be donated to the nonprofit Aviation Museum. The Porsche Club of America, and in particular the Santa Barbara Region, mourn the passing of Marge Misevic, president of our region for 1982 and 1983. For many years, Marge served as "first lady" as well as president for our region, hosting many official functions at her home. The monthly board meetings were held there, and she prepared all necessary documents relative thereto, such as minutes of meetings, plus preparing dinner for all. She traveled throughout America accompanying her beloved husband, Burt Misevic, when he was PCA’s National President. Marge embraced her roles with vigor and class with a demeanor that cemented good will among all PCA regions and members thereof. A classy lady that earned the respect and admiration of all who met her.
