THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER T h e s t a r t o f t h e y e a r h a s b e e n g o o d f o r o u r c lu b . We had some great events, including the Sweetwater Run in January, the Heartthrob Tour to celebrate Valentine's Day in February, and Monterey Spring Fling in March, the latter for three days and two nights with great driving and dining. The highlight of the Monterey trip was visiting Canepa, an automotive nirvana in Scotts Valley. We toured the showroom of restored road cars and competition vehicles, the private museum, and the large facility where restoration is done. Bruce Canepa himself was there to talk to us about his long and distinguished career racing and building both road and track Porsches. To not miss opportunities like these and upcoming drives, keep your eye on our “Calendar of Events” and “Down the Road.” Both are on the club’s website and elsewhere in this magazine. If you would like to plan and lead an event, please contact Art Shinn at artshinn@gmail. com or Lionel Neff at zuma13@msn.com.
There is plenty of support in the club if you do not have much experience managing an event. Porsche produced just 337 of the 959 model. Six of these were in Canepa's workshop the day we visited! I have seen others on previous visits. Bruce was instrumental in obtaining federal legislation designating these cars as historically significant so they could be imported into the U.S. Today, Canepa's craftsmen strengthen and lighten the cars and add a significant increase in the horsepower. Finished cars also carry a significant price tag! In the September/October 2021 issue, I wrote that VW had moved its Bugatti brand to Croatian electric vehicle maker Rimac. Porsche owns 45 percent of this company. For several months, there has been on-again, off-again speculation that VW is going to have an IPO for Porsche. Whether that means Porsche will be an independent company or not remains to be seen. You can purchase Porsche common shares with the ticker POAHY. This is just information, not investment advice! The Porsche-Piech family owns the majority of shares and Porsche SE is VW’s largest shareholder, owning about one-third of the total stock. Although these financial maneuvers may be academically interesting, that Porsche keeps making great sports cars is the only thing of real importance.
President Rod with Bruce Canepa

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK DENNIS POWER
swagen Group brands Porsche and Audi are likely to enter F1 in 2026. The latest at press time is a spokesperson told German publication Auto Motor und Sport: "The board of management and supervisory board of Volkswagen AG, Porsche AG and Audi AG have confirmed the plans of the two group brands for a possible entry into Formula 1." Porsche is likely to join Red Bull and provide the powertrains. Audi could go with McLaren or Sauber, which oversees the Alfa Romeo F1 team. The Volkswagen decision rests on F1’s commitment to a planned switch to “carbon neutral” synthetic fuels by 2026. Further down the line in the rumor mill is the suggestion that Audi could partner with Williams while Porsche would go with AlphaTauri or even Haas. While that is less likely now given the latest announcement, I have to say I’d love to see a partnership with Haas, it being the only American team in F1, but you can't deny that with Red Bull's record there would be wins.
that race. Then in 1961 and for close to two decades thereafter, F1's location stabilized in upstate New York: Watkins Glenn. (The college buddy I mentioned and I attended the race there in 1970, but this time with wives and toddlers in tow, not as carefree students.) Venues that followed included Long Beach, Las Vegas, Dallas, Detroit, Phoenix, and, again, Indianapolis. Then, in 2008, F1 fell off the U.S. calendar for four years. The United States Grand Prix returned in 2012 when Formula 1 cars took to the new track at Circuit of the Americas in Austin. But now the U.S. seems to be on the verge of an abundance of riches. In 2022, the Miami Grand Prix will be added as an F1 event at the Miami International Autodrome. And, hold on to your paychecks, in 2023 the race will take place on the streets of Las Vegas! Each season there will be three venues in the U.S.: Austin, Miami, and Las Vegas. Perhaps our talented activities co-chairs can figure out how to get us to one of these races, especially when “Porsche” appears on the livery of one of the teams.
The other development that caught my attention is the growing involvement of Formula 1 in the U.S. Beginning in 2012, we had the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The last venue before that was 2002 to 2007 on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But the history of Formula 1 here goes further back and it was not always called the “United States Grand Prix.” The F1’s maiden season in the U.S. began in 1950 at the Indianapolis 500. That lasted for almost a decade. In 1959, the United States Grand Prix was held at Sebring in Florida and in 1960 at Riverside International Raceway in southern California. I remember that a college buddy and I attended
Las Vegas F1. It's not Monaco, but it is easier to get to from the Santa Barbara Region.

Chet and Joan Yabitsu Receive Certificate of Appreciation Chet and Joan Yabitsu have been members of PCA since 2001. They participated regularly and enthusiastically in regional events. They own a pristine, concours-winning 2002 911 Turbo and a fully restored 1984 Turbo-look Carrera. They were regulars on our day trips, including Gimmick Rallies, wine tours, Solvang trips, and Pozo runs. Chet was a big fan of "Sally Carrera" and along with a few other SBR members started the Sally Carrera Collectors Association (SCCA). He has an extensive collection of Sally Carrera memorabilia. For the last 15 years, Chet and Joan were our Distribution Managers. Working as a team, they delivered our magazine to advertisers and sponsors, and brought batches of current and past issues to our events. By doing so, they kept our advertisers connected with us and encouraged potential members to join and participate. In addition, they handled all financial matters with the Post Office, ensuring members received their publication consistently and on time.
To express the club's appreciation, David Stone and Rod Hersberger prepared the certificate shown here. Last March, the certificate was presented to Chet and Joan by Kent Bodin, Doreen Pankow, and Susan and David Stone. Well done, Chet and Joan!

HEARTTHROB By TOUR Lionel Neff
he morning of Saturday, February 19, was a cold one, even for midwinter in southern California. However, the temperature always appears to warm up once I get behind the wheel of my Porsche 911 Turbo. My early morning drive to Porsche of Santa Barbara served as the prelude to the Heartthrob Tour, held as close to Valentine’s Day as we could get. The plan was for all participants to meet at the dealership at 8:45 a.m. for a 9:30 “lift-off.” I must extend a note of thanks to Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge who did an exceptional job at making our entire group feel welcome with a wonderful spread of fresh fruit, sweet rolls, juices, and various coffees—all well beyond the call of duty. Thanks, too, are to be extended to Doreen Pankow, Doreen Shinn, and Art Shinn for assuring everyone signed the liability waivers and received their meal tickets. The plan for this drive was a bit different from the past. The vehicles were divided into two groups: on the left, led by me, were all drivers with last names starting from A

through L, and, on the right, led by distinguished club President Rod Hersberger were all drivers with last names from M through Z. There were 40 vehicles divided equally in left and right lanes. The plan was to have the groups leave ten minutes apart. At 9:30 all drivers were at the wheel of their cars, motors running, with hearts throbbing in anticipation of the adventure ahead. We drove out of the dealership and northbound onto US101. So far so good. We whisked ourselves past the pristine views of the Pacific Ocean and the verdant green hills along the Camino Real. The scene is captured very well in this magazine’s cover photo taken by our own Gary Krueger. At 38.9 miles we exited at Santa Rosa Rd. (known affectionately by locals as the road to nowhere). Let the fun begin; and so it did over curvy farm roads through vineyards and cannabis fields until mile marker 55.6, where we intersected the famous Hwy. 1.
From here we turned right onto Hwy. 246 on our way to the challenging Harris Grade, once part of the original Hwy. 1. Known as a dangerous crossing, the Harris Grade connects the Lompoc and Los Alamos valleys running through the Purisima Hills. The Harris Grade passes through a 100-year-old oil field and a rare Bishop pine forest. The multiple 15 mph curves led to a locally known ghostly tale of Agnes, who supposedly haunts these parts after she and her daughter plunged over the side and died. Fortunately, we all made it over the haunted Harris Grade with neither incident nor ghost sightings. But we did feel fortunate in being in cars, unlike the many struggling up the grade on road bikes. At the bottom of Harris Grade we turned left on Hwy. 135 and turned left again onto San Antonio Rd. Or, more accurately put, half of our number turned left at San Antonio Rd. while the other group dutifully followed the leader and turned right. (Those of us who continued on San Antonio Rd. were treated to more beautiful vistas and high-speed sweeping curves while descending downward on Casmalia Rd., while the errant group missed the views but arrived at the restaurant first and got the best parking places.) Our route continued to Black Rd. and onto Hwy. 1 toward Orcutt.

You might find it interesting to know the town of Orcutt was named after William Warren Orcutt, one of the major figures of the California oil industry heralding back to the early 1900s. William Orcutt was responsible for the oil boom that took place in the Santa Maria Valley. When the locals wanted to name the town after him he was reluctant, thinking the idea akin to “naming cheap cigars after cheap actresses,” as the story goes. From Hwy. 1 we turned left onto Clark St. and right onto Broadway to our final destination, the fabulous Trattoria Uliveto, an Italian dining gem in the heart of Old Orcutt. Owner Alfonso Curti was there to greet us and directed us to the private dining room where he and his staff had prepared a sumptuous Italian dining experience. The meal consisted of a wonderful salad followed by a choice of chicken marsala or sole piccata, finished with a delicious tiramisu. Because he did such a good job with the service and the quality of the food, Alfonso was requested to take a bow and enjoy the appreciation and warmth extended to him by the PCA Santa Barbara members. And so ended the Heartthrob Tour, with full bellies, good stories to share, and a pleasant drive home at our own pace. Lionel Neff has been a member of PCA since 2020. Along with Art Shinn, he is SBR's Activities Co-chair. Lionel drives a 2017 911 Turbo in GT Silver.

Monterey Spring Fling Epic
Story by Lionel Neff Photos by Bill Hallier
T
his epic, three-day adventure started with unbridled anticipation on Tuesday morning, March 22, 2022. At 8:30 a.m. our group of intrepid Porsche drivers and their partners started congregating in the parking lot adjacent to The Habit Burger Grill in Santa Barbara. The Porsches were divided into two groups: I led the first group and the second was led by the distinguished Nicholas Liakas. By 9:15 all participants had arrived; the pre-ride messages were delivered and at 9:30 everyone was in their cars, lined-up with motors revving, and ready to go. Our drive took us over Highway 154 out of Santa Barbara for 33 miles, at which point we merged onto US 101 North where we continued until mile marker 118 and exited the highway at Spring Street in Paso Robles. A few blocks on brought us to our delightful lunch stop at the Paso Market Walk. This is an enclave of various restaurants and shops that form a semicircle around a courtyard of shade trees, picnic tables, and umbrellas. It is a wonderful venue to enjoy with good friends a midday repast of fine gastronomical delights. Following lunch, the adventure continued once we got back on the 101. At route mile marker 160 we exited and headed east on Highway 198 where a series of curves whet our appetites for what was to come. At route mile marker 175 we made a left turn onto the vast and pristine California

State Route 25, known to locals as Airline Highway. The road garnered its name from early pilots using the road as a navigation aid while flying over Central California towns. The drive on SR 25 is a scenic delight replete with open ranch land, farms, and vineyards. The road is a delightful combination of tight 15-, 20-, and 30-mph curves mixed in with wide sweepers and long straightaways. It’s impossible to be bored on this thrilling road. I am pleased that while the drive was frisky there were no incidents or accidents to report. However, the smiles at the end were hard to remove.
Toward the end of our romp over SR 25 and just below Hollister, our route had us turning onto Union Street to SR 156, which serves as a primary route from the Monterey Peninsula to either the San Francisco Bay Area or the Central Valley. Our band of Porsches continued by heading west on SR 156 until its intersection with the 101 South where we continued until SR 156 again appeared as the continued route to the Monterey Peninsula. We stayed on Highway 1 and exited at Del Monte Avenue to Lighthouse Avenue and then to Foam Street, where the Victorian Inn awaited us with safe underground parking, an expedited check-in, and a wine and cheese greeting. All in all, the drive was terrific and everyone arrived filled to overflowing with the excitement of the drive.

At 6:15 p.m. our group gathered for a short walk down the hill to the Monterey Embarcadero, also known as the Old Fisherman’s Wharf. Within a few blocks we arrived at the Fish Hopper, our dining venue for the evening. Our collection of vagabonds was courteously led to our awaiting tables overlooking Monterey Bay in time to occasion the sunset spectacle. Our meal choices were all sumptuously delicious. Portions were as generous and genuine as was the loud din of laughter, conversation, and clinking plates and glasses. There was evident the collective sigh of satisfaction for a day well spent with nothing deserving criticism (for which I was happy). The next morning, we were greeted at the hotel dining room with a wonderful breakfast of omelets, sausages, various baked goods, coffee, and juices, after which we gathered in the underground garage for the pre-ride talk. Then off we went to our primary focus point, the famous Canepa showroom, museum, and workshop located in Scotts Valley, a mere 40 miles distant. Rod Hersberger, our distinguished club president, had arranged with the people at Canepa for our visit. Little did we know what awaited us. When we arrived, we were guided into the showroom with hopes to visit the upstairs museum in due course. However, unbeknownst to us—and absent any plan—the man, the myth, the legend, Bruce Canepa himself made an appearance and graciously greeted us. Bruce spellbindingly held our attention with stories of his life’s experiences, everything there is to know about Porsches, and insights to his restoration and sales business. No sooner did Bruce finish with us the serendipitous former partner Sean showed up to spend more hours filling our heads to overflowing with every detail and nuance of each celebrated vehicle in the museum, followed by a rare and up-close excursion through the prodigious custom workshop. It was a day to celebrate and never forget.

DER AUSPUFF May/June 2022
We left Canepa with our souls rejoicing in the grandeur of the day. However, it was lunchtime and for most of the group a stop in Moss Landing at Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery was in order. We arrived at Phil’s in good stead and waited our turn in line to place our lunch orders from the myriad of choices. With appetites satiated, we headed back home to the Victorian Inn in time for another cheese and wine celebration. It was a free evening and many paired up with others to enjoy a relaxing evening. Top left: President Rod delivering remarks and thanks at the Fish Hopper, our first night's dinner restaurant. Top right: Canepa building with the showroom on the lower level, museum upstairs, and restoration workshop behind. Lower right: Three amigos: trip organizer and author Lionel Neff, President Rod Hersberger, and Bruce Canepa (l to r).
The next morning marked the end of our not-to-beforgotten Monterey adventure. The various drivers chose to either head straight down the 101 toward home or take the leisurely, more scenic ride on CA-1 through Big Sur (see the back two pages for a stunning view along the rugged coast). All in all, it was a wondrous trip filled with great memories with new and old friends to recall together when but a distant Porsche Club memory. I want to thank all the individuals who unselfishly contributed to the success of this extraordinary event. Art and Doreen Shinn, Rod Hersberger, Nicholas Liakas, Tracy Hunter (events manager at the Victorian Inn), Rachael Dominquez (events manager at The Fish Hopper), and last, but not least, my wife Dori, who endured my overtures while formulating this event and held on tightly through all the curves with nary a complaint.

nother group of Porsche club enthusiasts gathered on top of the Ventura Pier parking structure on Saturday, March 19, 2022. Twenty-two Porsches and 34 people were in attendance. The weather for this outing was more overcast than our first visit back in December. The multiple colors of the Porsches brightened up the cement structure, lined up side by side, providing a history with the old and new cars mixed together. Aloha Steakhouse once again opened up early just for the club and provided a scrumptious buffet. Old friends and new friends enjoying a post-Covid gathering was enjoyable to see. Interrupting great conversation, Vice President Steve Doll greeted everyone and introduced our Activities Co-chair Art Shinn who updated us on the many upcoming drives and events. I hope you can make it to the next Aloha breakfast!

On Monday, March 28, 2022, I attended a Drivers Education at Streets of Willow race track. The event was organized by the Grand Prix Region with involvement from the Los Angeles Region and our own SBR. The evening before, to start their training, the drivers attended ground school (classroom session only) at a hotel close to Willow Springs International Raceway. Lessons were given in track verbiage, the meaning of the various flags, terminologies, and expectations. And, of course, reassurance was given that as long as the students follow the instructions and rules they and their cars will leave the track in good shape. Early the next day, with gas tanks full, introductions between students and their driving instructors were made. Greg Hwang, the event sponsor and owner of House Automotive, was introduced. The safety meeting was completed. And then the fun began, with cars grouped according to the experience of the drivers and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the horsepower of the cars.

DER AUSPUFF 23
Students were encouraged to observe the first two groups of experienced drivers in order to gain context of driving fast on a wet, twisty track. Shortly thereafter, together with their instructor sitting in the right seat, it was time for the newbies to don their helmets, buckle their seatbelts, start their engines, and go out for the first of five 20-minute sessions of the day. With instructors to support and guide them around the track safely, all started slowly and gently with two full laps of full course yellow (no passing, use extreme caution). Then things started to gradually get more fun. Instructors taught students to “drive the line,” brake, turn, and accelerate at appropriate locations, and how to listen to and feel the vibrations of their car. Throughout the day, all students were given opportunities to pass and be passed and realize the thrill of what it feels like to be a race car driver. This event was special in a couple of ways. It was the first joint event with three adjacent regions: Los Angeles, Grand Prix, and Santa Barbara. As a result, drivers came from much of southern California and it was good to get acquainted. Second, the experience of a track day in the rain is unique. Drivers in southern California experience dry tracks most of the time. Racing in the rain gives both students and experienced drivers the opportunity to test their skills in slippery conditions: not only fun but a valuable learning exercise. As the end of the day came, which was far too soon, everyone’s adrenaline was left on the track, and knowledge, skill, and smiles were all that remained as we drove off into the sunset. Drivers Education (DE) events are not races; they are just great ways to drive your Porsche on a track and have fun learning to drive it better. We are grateful to the people of the Grand Prix Region who put this DE together. “Day Away From Work,” is something they do very well. Look for another later in the year. California’s Rancho Era History The Dana Adobe Cultural Center and Rancho Nipomo Saturday, June 25, 2022
T
he stories of California’s Rancho Era history come alive at the Dana Adobe Cultural Center. Visitors are engaged with our region’s history, connecting with the peoples, the land, and its resources to foster environmental stewardship and cultural understanding. Rancho Nipomo once encompassed the vast majority of land between what is now Arroyo Grande and the Santa Maria River, an area blessed by rich soil and natural resources that enabled the establishment of towns whose economy was based on largely agriculture and natural resource extraction. Join fellow SBR members on an engaging drive along beautiful back roads and in learning about the original land grant awarded in1837 to William G. Dana and his family by the Mexican government, a grant that included Nipomo and the Los Berros region. We’ll participate in docent tours of the property and experience what it was like to live and work on a California rancho. We’ll start midmorning (details to follow), arrive in time for a bring-your-own picnic lunch with fellow participants (picnic tables available), and begin the formal tour at 1:30 p.m., ending at 3:00.

TWO-DOOR TWISTIES A DAY ON CALIFORNIA BACK ROADS WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2022
The Challenge. This will be a full day of driving some of California’s best back roads, especially for sports cars. Two-doors only on this one: four-doors and SUVs will have earned a drive of their own down the road. The route. Gathering time is 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, at SBR member Angel Martinez’s Paddock Motor Club in Goleta: 5730 Thornwood Dr. Getting underway at 7:00 a.m., the route will take us inland and north on mostly two-lane roads. This route caters to drivers who enjoy all manner of twists and turns and ups and downs—decreasing radius, off camber, blind cresting. This drive will have it all. Highway 58 is a delight. And a midweek drive should mean that the roads will be ours. A possible route is shown on the small map, but we will check it out closer to the event and let those registered know the details. The drive alone is five and a half hours. We are counting on another hour and a half for gas and pit stops, giving us an arrival time in
San Luis Obispo for lunch about 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be at Beda’s Biergarten, an authentic, family friendly restaurant for German food and beer. If you return home after lunch, count on another 1.5 to 2.0 hours driving time for the day. An option. For those wishing to not make the return trip home the same day, San Luis Obispo and the area offer nice places to stay and some fine restaurants. Wine country is just up the road near Paso Robles. Arrangements to stay overnight would be on your own. The cost. The fee is $10 per person, payable with your registration. To register. Twenty-five car limit. Registration opens June 1. Register online at: www.msreg.com/Twodoortwisties. If you don’t have a motorsportreg account you will set one up the first time you use the site. That account stays with you for future SBR events. Questions. For questions about the trip contact Angel Martinez at angel.martinez55@gmail.com. For questions about motorsportreg contact Art Shinn at artshinn@gmail.com.

SBR CONTINUES ITS EXPLORATION OF AMERICA’S MAGIFICENT SOUTHWEST September 14 -20, 2022 By Nicolas Liakas
I
t’s time again for PCA/SBR members to explore the beauty and magic of America’s scenic wonders. Over seven days and six nights, we will travel via a circular route that will create a life-long memory. Here is what we can expect to see. Slot Canyons at Page, Arizona. We will enter a magical world and immerse ourselves in a fully-guided tour through the sandstone walls of the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons. We start with a short, 10-minute walk from the reception area to the entrance of the canyons. The trail leading to the entrance of Lower Antelope Canyon is both rocky and sandy, so please wear appropriate shoes. (While the top of the canyon is wide, the path inside can be quite narrow, so tours are not recommended for people who have issues with enclosed spaces.) Horseshoe Bend At Glen Canyon, the Colorado River makes a wide sweep around a sandstone escarpment. On its long journey to the sea, the river meandered, sometimes making wide bends, but always seeking the path of least resistance. Around five million years ago, the Colorado Plateau uplifted and the meandering rivers that crossed the ancient landscape were trapped in their beds. Over time, the rivers cut through the uplifted layers of sandstone. At Horseshoe Bend, the Colorado River created a roughly 1,000-foot deep, 270-degree horseshoe-shape in the canyon. Glen Canyon Dam This dramatic structure is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River in northern Arizona, near the town of Page. The 710-foot high dam was built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1956 to 1966 and forms Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S. Zion National Park Follow the paths where ancient native people and pioneers walked. Gaze up at massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink, and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Experience wilderness in a narrow slot canyon. Zion’s unique array of plants and animals will enchant you as you absorb the rich history of the past and enjoy the excitement of present-day adventures.
Bryce Canyon National Park Bryce Canyon is not a single canyon, but a series of natural amphitheaters, or bowls, carved into the edge of a high plateau. The most famous is the Bryce Amphitheater, which is filled with irregularly eroded spires of rocks called hoodoos. Perhaps every visitor to the park will spend at least some time marveling at its four main viewpoints, all found within the first miles of the park: Bryce Point, Inspiration Point, Sunset Point, and Sunrise Point. Las Vegas One night of fun, food, shows, and lost wages (or retirement funds)! Enjoy yourselves and start the drive home the next morning.
