THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
ROD HERSBERGERSanta BarBara got Some much-needed rain that filled reservoirs without too much ancillary damage. Gray skies and even rain do not prevent our members from turning out for club events, though. The Cars & Coffee in Santa Barbara, for example, was a wet one, but a few stalwarts still showed up, ready to talk about Porsches.
You can read the entire story elsewhere, but, boy, was our January 15 visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum to meet Magnus Walker and see some of his outlaw Porsches, and then to Bruce Meyer’s collection in Beverley Hills, one amazing day! Both gentlemen were great hosts with intriguing stories to tell. At the Petersen there was also a Shelby cars drive-in celebrating Carroll’s 100th birthday. Bruce Meyer had his first ever production Cobra
there and told a few of us the importance of the CSX serial numbers in Cobra identification and value. Oh, if that was not enough, there were many Andy Warhol paintings of Mercedes Benz historic cars along with the cars themselves. Andy’s chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce was parked outside the exhibit. It was a day made in heaven for car guys and gals, rivaling our club visit with Bruce Canepa back in March 2022. Steve Geldman deserves a huge thank-you for pulling off this coup.
You will always find a full list of upcoming events in this magazine and at www.pcasb.org. Register early so you don’t miss out; events often have size limits.
June 2024 will mark the 60th anniversary of our club’s founding. This
milestone is something that deserves to be celebrated. Please let me know if you have ideas for events or want to help with the planning. We are hoping for great participation from members and are still looking for someone to lead the planning effort.
I take more car mags than I can keep up with. Within our budget and other parameters, none is finer than Der Auspuff. The editor, writers, and photographers are all superb. Our social media chair Sal Reyes and webmaster Randy Fishwick also deserve thanks as they keep our audiences up to date about club activities. We welcome member involvement, so do let me know how you would like to be part of what makes the club great. Thanks everyone.
Board of Directors Meetings

Member attendance and participation are encouraged. Contact SBR president Rod Hersberger (rodhersberger@gmail.com) to receive the Zoom link for each meeting. Board meeting minutes are posted on the SBR website: www.pcasb.org/#club_news.
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
one of the thingS miSSing in your magazine has been a regular feature on technical matters, both about our cars and how to fix them and related technical achievements on the horizon for Porsche as a company. We lost our previous editor of tech notes to a higher calling; he’s now writing for the monthly magazine Excellence
To start to bring advice and commentary on more technical topics, David Stone, our Dealer Relations man, has put out a call to our local dealers, both of which have very knowledgeable technicians in their service departments. In the meantime, I’m including in this issue a page provided by an expert from the Suncoast Region of PCA: Pedro Bonilla. His articles are included in several other regional magazines that wanted to fill the tech-notes gap in their own publications.
The article this time (see page 24) is about Porsche’s goal for a nearly CO2-neutral operation of internal combustion engines which use gasoline. The fuel is being developed with partners that all have similar interests. I’ll feature more hands-on tech topics in the future, but since this issue of sustainability and carbon neutrality has been brought up, it is useful to note the overall strategy being planned by Porsche.
We know about the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid that offers sustainability and performance and the all-electric Taycan that features sports car performance with zero emissions. The latest 911 GT3 uses lightweight construction and aerodynamic design to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. The Macan EV and electric 718s will be available in the next couple of years.
Focusing on the future and the environment, Michael Steiner, member of the Executive Board for Research and Development, states “We are focused on creating the sports cars of tomorrow. Cars that are sustainable, electrified, and connected.” And regarding what we love about our cars—performance—it is reassuring to read what Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President of Porsche Motorsports and GT Cars, writes, “We are working to create a future that is not just environmentally friendly, but also offers the driving pleasure and performance that Porsche is known for.”
Moving on to recent activities at the local level, we have good things to write about in this issue: cars, people, drives, tours, and meals together. In December, Carol Mathieu and Karen Turek organized a holiday brunch for women in the club to gather for social time at the home of Sue and
Randy Kinsling. Then the holidays ended and the year began with a bang; Steve Geldman’s trip to the Petersen Automotive Museum to meet Magnus Walker and view his Urban Outlaw 10 exhibit, followed by a visit with collector Bruce Meyer to view his assemblage of iconic cars. (I couldn’t resist including below a photo of one of the historically significant race cars in the Meyer collection.)
Next was Nick Liakas’ Magical Mystery Tour, a comfortable drive in regional hills and a gathering for lunch in a Montecito canyon park. In February, we were rewarded with Doreen Pankow’s challenging drive through the Santa Monica Mountains, followed by lunch at a well-known brewery and restaurant.
It has been a memorable and most enjoyable start to the year. I look forward to more good times ahead.

Bruce Meyer, Magnus Walker, and the Petersen Automotive Museum
Story by Steve GeldmanAlthough this special event was to move forward rain or shine, the week leading up to it seemed to rain nonstop. Days earlier, flooding in the Santa Barbara area and closure of Hwy 101 near Carpinteria was surely going to throw a wrench into weeks of planning. Or would it? As luck would have it, the Rain Gods listened and for 12 hours, 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., precipitation halted and freeways were open. The morning of Sunday, January 15, our fearless SBR members arrived at the starting place!
Before diving into what some have said was one of our most successful events in awhile, allow me to explain the interesting story how we got there because it speaks to the
spirit of car enthusiasts. While chatting with a couple of our fellow club members during last November’s PCA National-sponsored ÜnStock in Burbank, I saw Bruce Meyer walking nearby and asked him to join in our conversation. I’ve known Bruce for some time and have had the opportunity to publish past articles about him and his associated car events. Bruce has been in the automotive community for decades, is the co-founder of the Petersen Automotive Museum, an owner of many historic automobiles, and a host of too many achievements to mention here. Bruce is best known as a down-to-earth, terrific car guy: “I’m not a collector, but an enthusiast,” he says.
Shortly after introducing Bruce to SBR members Angel Martinez and Dominic Bonelli, I asked Bruce a simple question: “Without putting you on the spot, what would be the chances of having our PCA Santa Barbara group visit your personal car collection one day?” Without hesitation, he agreed.
Knowing that Magnus Walker, legendary creator and collector of urban outlaws, was currently having his own Porsche exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum, Bruce suggested we throw a visit there into the day’s event as well. The only caveat was Walker’s exhibit was ending in less than 90 days. Now on a fast-track to get to both venues on one day, we decided to limit capacity to 50 SBR members. Surprisingly, when registration opened in early December it sold out in only eight minutes. Due to a lengthy waitlist, we later increased the maximum and topped it off at 80. Those on the waitlist were excited when informed they were now included, but that didn’t stop the waitlist from growing. Phone calls and emails started to come in. A couple from the PCA Region in Western Canada wanted in as did some from L.A. and other nearby Regions; we sadly had to turn them away due to our own members having priority. It was at this point it finally occurred to me that this was going to be one special day!
This event was a bit more convoluted to arrange than others as it involved three locations. First was to meet up and get a large group organized. We started at a parking area in Westlake Village where Art Shinn and Sue Kinsling volunteered their expertise in getting waivers signed and the attendance list checked off. After pre-drive instructions, including the strong suggestion to carpool, we drove highways 101, 405, and 10 to reach our second destination: the amazing and stunning Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. SBR board members Richard Lange and Howard Rubinstein helped managed entrance tickets and parking validations. We proceeded through the large glass doors before the museum normally opens to the public and had about 40 minutes to explore the three levels of the museum, filled with several special exhibits such as Inside Tesla: Supercharging the Electric Revolution and Andy Warhol: Cars. So far, so good!
Per the strict time schedule, our group gathered on the main level before venturing downstairs to the Museum’s famous Vault, where some of the Petersen’s rarest and most valuable vehicles in the world are kept. Magnus Walker appeared as our group broke into applause and we were escorted down into the Vault’s “Legends Room” to see his current exhibition, Magnus Walker: Urban Outlaw 10
The British-born Walker is an icon, first in the clothing industry and later as a premier collector of outlaw-styled Porsches. His Petersen exhibit showcases the 10-year celebration since his short film documentary Urban Outlaw was released. Magnus selected 10 of his nicely modified Porsches and had them driven to the museum. There was other automotive memorabilia as well, including items from his collaboration with Nike showcasing his limited production Nike 277 shoes, and with Mattel, displaying the line of Magnus Walker Hot Wheels currently sold worldwide. Magnus was both humorous and passionate as he spoke about his personal history, his Porsches on display, and much more.
Of Walker’s entire collection, his favorite is the 1971 Porsche 911T, number 277. Used for spirited street driving as well as on the track, this baby has modified suspension and a hot rod built 2.8L twin-plug flat-6. As Magnus stated,
the patina surface among all the scars help define the car’s character and, “Best of all, it’s my most comfortable Porsche to drive, like putting on an old pair of sneakers.”
Magnus continued to describe each of his 10 amazing Porsches, going into detail as “every car has a story.” Magnus finished his time by graciously signing his Urban Outlaw posters and was photographed by anyone asking for a selfie. He is a kind and most interesting English chap, indeed.
For the next couple of hours members were on their own to roam the prestigious Vault area, explore the upper three stories of the museum, or visit the gift shop: so many options, but limited time. Some folks enjoyed lunch at the museum’s Meyers Manx Café, but most ventured a few miles away and dined near where our next adventure was to be.
In the early afternoon we all gathered on the sidewalk on Beverly Drive in internationally-known Beverly Hills. Wow, everyone made it on time! Our next presenter, Bruce Meyer, arrived and led the group into his secluded office building. Accompanying Bruce, and later introduced to us, was Aaron Shelby, visiting from his home state of Texas. Aaron had participated that morning at the Petersen for his grandfather Carroll’s birthday celebration: very cool, and a nice surprise to have a Shelby family member joining us!
Stepping into the Meyer collection, your breath is taken away. His assemblage of mostly fine vintage automobiles, motorcycles, and even a classic wooden speedboat resides on the second floor of his building. Bruce had a large elevator modified for lifting well-over 5,000 pounds; vehicles can be moved into this space from the parking garage below. How did he accumulate all these vehicles? As Bruce puts it, his collection slowly grew from 60 years of being an automotive enthusiast—buying more than he sold.
Much of his collection evolves from his passion for finding special vehicles with a historic connection to the racetrack, specifically Le Mans. Racing has been in Bruce’s blood since he was a teenager. As a matter of fact, on display was his 1929 Ford Hot Rod “747” Bonneville Roadster he drove at the Salt Flats and reached 204 mph. A mannequin placed beside the car wears the jumpsuit Bruce wore on that eventful day in 2012.
Being a true Porsche guy with a handful of exotic examples, Bruce pointed out one of the most famous 911s in the world, the 1979 Porsche 935K3 (page 5). This race car, modified by Porsche engineering mastermind Manfred Kremer, won first place overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979.
How can one not ask Bruce the question, “what is your favorite car in your collection?”. That honor goes to his gloss black 1962 Shelby Cobra, CSX #2001. This is the first Cobra off the Shelby production floor for public sale. He found this gem 20 years ago in Paris, France. As with all the street-legal vehicles in his collection, each is driven regularly. This Cobra is no exception and was at the Petersen earlier that day for the Shelby Cruise-In event and then is what he drove in to meet with us this afternoon. “Garage Queens” not spoken here.
Viewing the photo layout in this article, one will get only a very small taste of what this lucky PCA Santa Barbara Region experienced on a special day. If you missed this event you are not totally out of luck. Thanks to YouTube, here are a few videos to wet your automotive appetite:

Thanks to all our SBR volunteers who helped me organize this event, including Doreen Shinn for her weeks of challenging work being the Motorsportreg Registration Coordinator. Also, thanks to our talented photographers shooting for this article. On behalf of PCA Santa Barbara Region, a final “thank you” to Bruce Meyer and Magnus Walker for their generosity and allowing us to share their automotive passion and personal collections. We left each of them with an SBR plaque acknowledging our gratitude.

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR
Story by Nicolas LiakasIt was the best of times and the worst of times, but without HELP required from any of our friends to get by. Read on to experience what 36 fellow members of the Santa Barbara Region of the Porsche Club of America encountered on their Magical Mystery Tour, January 21, 2023.
Due to the recent rains that flooded many locations on the driving directions sent to participants two weeks earlier, we had to reconfigure our routes—again and again—to bypass muddy roads, runoffs, and road closures. Balcom Canyon, South Mountain Road, Hwy 150, and other closures forced us to use roads that were cleared during the previous week.
That was the magical part of the drive. The mystery was in navigating the alternate roads and byways. It is quite a sight to see 18 Porsches meandering through Ventura and Santa Barbara Canyons. However, we persevered and were emboldened by what the rain had brought us this winter: beautiful green hills and meadows to accompany us to Toro Canyon County Park in Montecito.
It’s a beautiful park, with its own creek, plenty of picnic tables, and relief facilities. It was at those tables that many stories were told about past life experiences as well as reminiscing about previous SBR adventures. One table, in particular, was occupied by eight members, each of whom traced their families history to the green meadows of Ireland. Looking around the park truly brought back many memories.
There are great events planned for the balance of 2023, so be sure to sign on as soon as you see the notices.

Porsche Mademoiselle Society HOLIDAY REUNION
By Carol Mathieu and Karen TurekLast December 17 was a time to celebrate a Porsche Mademoiselle Society Holiday Reunion at the beautiful home of Sue and Randy Kinsling. Twenty-two women were able to attend and enjoy the beautiful and festive decorations throughout their home. There were three Christmas trees fully decorated, along with Nativity scenes that have been collected over the years. Each Nativity scene told a story with a tag depicting the year and place that it was acquired: a true history of travel and different depictions in art. We had an icebreaker with stickers of holiday words placed on peoples backs and we had to guess what it was or who we were! It got the festivities started with lots of laughs! We enjoyed mimo-
sas and numerous appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. Laughter and great conversation made the afternoon pass very quickly. Door prizes were handed out and a hunt took place for the missing Elf on the Shelf, who was finally found in one of the beautifully decorated Christmas Trees!
We talked about future events and where everyone might like to go in the spring. I guess we will have to wait and see what pops up for all of us adventurers! If you would like to be added to the Porsche Mademoiselle Society mailing list for future events, please let us know and send your e-mail information to Carol Mathieu at shaman500@verizon.net.
Coastal Mountain Run to BJ’s
By Doreen PankowAgroup of 75 members driving 43 Porsches embarked on an adventure through the winding and picturesque roads of the Santa Monica Mountains. On Saturday, February 18, the convoy of high-performance cars, each boasting iconic designs and more than capable engines, departed from our meeting location in Ventura and headed south on Hwy 101. The plan was to enjoy another fun day driving through the nearby coastal mountains, and, so, in Camarillo we took Las Posas Road over to Potrero Road where we tested our driving skills through the twisty curves up the mountain through Hidden Valley, over to Westlake Blvd., and onto Decker Canyon. We were greeted with verdant foliage, scenic landscapes, and mostly clear skies.
We made a steep ascent to the top of CA-23 and then turned onto Mulholland Road for about five miles before turning onto Encinal Canyon Road, with its wide,
sweeping curves, all the way down the mountain to Pacific Coast Highway. We headed west onto CA-1 with its gorgeous ocean views for about 15 miles before turning inland to drive to BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Oxnard.
If sharing a sense of camaraderie from navigating the challenging terrain wasn’t enough, together our members enjoyed a variety of pizzas, pastas, and salads for lunch at BJ’s. It was enjoyable to share the high points of the drive and catch up on the everyday lives of our friends.
A special thank you to our SBR photographers who allow us to relive the experiences by always capturing key moments of our driving events: Randy Fishwick, Bill Hallier, Steve Geldman. and Gary Krueger.
Doreen Pankow has been a member of PCA since 1997. She is past president of SBR, past Activities Chair, and is active in club events. Doreen drives a 1995 Carrera in Midnight Blue.
Tech Notes: 80% by 2030
By Pedro BonillaThat’s Porsche’s goal for electrification of its fleet: 80% full electric by the year 2030. That is truly a fully committed company!
A few short years ago, in 2019, we witnessed the introduction of the Taycan, Porsche’s all electric sedan. For the year 2021, Taycans represented 14% of Porsche’s vehicle production, even outselling the iconic 911. The next two platforms to be offered as EVs from Porsche will be the Macan (2023) and the 718 Boxster / Cayman (2025).
The fate of the 911 is still up in the air, although a hybrid version has been talked about without a specific timeframe. The previous paragraph, plus the title of this article, seem to cryptically announce that Porsche isn’t planning to give up on ICE (internal combustion engine) altogether, at least not for it’s flagship 911, considered by many as one of the best driver’s cars in the world.
But Porsche has also committed to reaching carbon-neutrality by 2030 as well! Thinking about that, how can Porsche then justify maintaining the production of an ICE platform? That question may have been answered this past week when two Porsche executives filled up a 911 from the first batch of e-Fuel ever produced. The symbolic act took place in Punta Arenas, Chile, site of the pilot plant that has been in the works for the past several years, and is now producing (albeit in reduced volume) the new, clean alternative to gasoline, a synthetic methanol produced by a very complex process that uses water, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
This wonder-fuel enables a nearly CO2 neutral operation of internal combustion engines which use gasoline, when switched to e-Fuel. In the initial (pilot) phase the plant will produce 130,000 liters (34,342 gallons) per year and this fuel will mainly be used for Porsche Motorsports, including the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and the Porsche Experience Centers’ vehicles. By 2025 it is expected that production will ramp up to 55 million liters (14.5 million gallons) and by 2027 the facility should be supplying 550 million liters (145 million gallons) per year.
Initially it won’t be cheap. The first batch destined for Porsche Motorsports has a cost of 10€ per liter or $45 per gallon. But by 2026, Porsche expects the price to drop to around $7.50 per gallon due to efficiencies of scale and further technological developments.
The project is a joint effort between Porsche, Highly Innovative Fuels, Siemens Energy, ExxonMobil, and the Chilean oil and gas companies ENAP and Empresas Gasco. The process sounds way simpler than the execution: A Siemens wind turbine (3.4 megawatt) powers a Siemens proton exchange membrane which produces green hydrogen from water by electrolysis at 65% efficiency. As the production needs grow, the wind-generated power will ramp up to 2.5 gigawatts and further improve efficiency.
At the same time, a Global Thermostats system scrubs CO2 from the air using a special ceramic honeycomb matrix which yields 98% pure CO2. When the hydrogen and CO2 are run through a copper-zinc catalyst, green methanol is produced. Finally, the methanol is vaporized, superheated, and passed through a fluid-bed reactor where a special ExxonMobil catalyst helps convert it to gasoline, with water as a byproduct.
Because of the additives and blending requirements to ensure that e-Fuel can serve as a drop-in replacement for crude-based gasoline, the carbon intensity figure is 10, not zero. That still means that burning it results in 90% less net carbon than standard gasoline with identical performance properties.
Porsche’s end game is to ensure there’s a carbon-neutral fuel that can power the 70% of all Porsches ever built that will still be on the road long after the new car fleet is fully electrified.

Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

On Saturday morning, March 18, experience maritime treasures and stories at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. But first, we’ll meet at 8:30 a.m. at the parking lot adjacent to the Habit Restaurant (3890 La Cumbre Plaza Lane), departing at 9:00 on a scenic drive through the local mountains. Ending at the museum, the executive director will give us a presentation “13,000 Years of Local Maritime History.” You can then tour the museum on your own to learn about Chumash maritime culture, the 1923 “Honda Disaster” (the largest peacetime naval disaster in U.S. history), local light houses, the fishing industry, deep sea diving, the history of oil in the Channel, and more.
“KNOT” JUST A MUSEUM TOUR
Saturday, March 18, 2023
Since all of this activity will make us hungry, we’ll have lunch on the second floor above the museum at the Anchor Rose restaurant: excellent sea food, tri-tip and chicken sandwiches, and fabulous fish and chips, plus an exquisite view of the Santa Barbara Harbor, where commercial fishing vessels and hundreds of yachts are berthed.
The cost of the adventure is $75 per person and includes entrance to the museum and lunch at the Anchor Rose. Register at msreg.com/sbmaritimemuseum. Questions?: contact Ron Mulick at (805) 689-1981 or ron@mulick.com. For questions about registration, contact Art Shinn at artshinn@gmail.com

IN MEMORIAM
Anita Banke (1934 to 2023)
We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Anita Banke, the longest-tenured Santa Barbara Region member. She died peacefully at home due to complications following hip surgery. Anita and her late husband, Larry, joined our region in August, 1967, after meeting the then club president at a Porsche dealership where they had just purchased a car. They immediately became active members, participating in and hosting a variety of activities. Anita also served as club secretary and, for many years, membership chair. She was a regular attendee of breakfast meetings, region anniversary celebrations, and Porsche Parades. We last saw her at the 2022 Santa Barbara Concours d’Elegance.
Over the years, Anita was the proud owner of 12 Porsches, including a rare ’59 356 Convertible D and a 2003 996 Carrera, which she continued to drive until recently. Anita spent her 47-year working career at Point Mugu Naval Air Station, retiring as an administrative supervisor. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, and crossword puzzles. She was a true animal lover and gave several cats a loving home. Anita was truly a VIP of the Santa Barbara Region. She will be missed by all those who knew her. There are no plans for a memorial service.
