THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN STEVE DOLL Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the holidays and spent some quality time in your Porsches. We have a lot to be thankful for living in beautiful southern California. Thanks for the opportunity to be your president this year. I joined the club in 2007 after I bought my first new Porsche, a midnight blue, 6-speed, Cayman S. It was several years before I became active in the club, only going to an occasional autocross or track day. Moving to Ventura with Caroline

in 1989 and raising toddlers Sean and Sarah took a lot of time, as well as being active in the community on nonprofit boards, skiing, and participating in running events and triathlons. So, for me, the real club enjoyment began when I became more involved and met more of you. This year I hope to meet even more of our members. I have always had a love of cars. We have had over 65, 10 of those Porsches (so far). “Fun to drive” was usually (but not always) an ownership prerequisite. When I was 10, I would grab my older brother’s car magazines out of the mailbox before he got home from high school, MUCH to his displeasure. I would try to read them cover to cover even though I didn’t understand all of what they were talking about. Ten years turned into al-

most 70 in a blink of an eye. Now, I look forward to having fun with the Porsche club and our members. I want to thank the people who participated last year on the board, on committees, and as volunteers who pitched in to make our club so great—It’s the PEOPLE. Special thanks to everyone who contributed to Der Auspuff, particularly its editor Dennis Power, for a fabulous year of magazines! Welcome, also, to the board members who will serve this year: those who remained and those who are new. We had a fantastic time at the Holiday Brunch at Spanish Hills Country Club, with much of the early work by Doreen Pankow and days of organization by Doreen Shinn and helpers. I also want to salute two people honored at the Holiday Brunch. They are Membership Coordinator Sue Kinsling and Past President Rod Hersberger, the 2023 Woman and Man of the Year, respectively (see page 13). These two are special examples of the kinds of people who make our club terrific!

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK DENNIS POWER Porsche enthusiasts, rejoice! Once again, our beloved brand has topped the J.D. Power U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study for premium brands. With a score of 840 points, Porsche outshone the competition, achieving a remarkable nine-point increase over last year’s results. This prestigious accolade signifies Porsche’s unwavering dedication to delivering an exceptional customer experience throughout the entire sales journey. From knowledgeable and attentive sales teams to streamlined processes and seamless delivery, Porsche ensures every interaction reinforces the passion and exclusivity associated with owning the marque. The 2023 SSI Study also highlights Porsche’s dominance across specific segments. Notably, they secured the top spot in both the premium car and premium SUV categories, demonstrating their ability to cater to diverse driv-

ing preferences while maintaining the highest standards of satisfaction. This achievement reflects the unwavering commitment of Porsche dealerships and personnel to providing exceptional service and expertise. It’s a testament to their dedication to exceeding customer expectations and fostering a lifelong loyalty to the Porsche brand. Locally, we’ve always benefited from our relationship with Porsche of Santa Barbara and Rusnak Porsche Westlake. Take a look at page 14 where we are happy to introduce the new general manager for the Rusnak store in Ventura County. So, take pride in knowing that our choice is not only backed by legendary performance and engineering excellence, but also by a commitment to our satisfaction. Porsche’s reign as the leader in sales satisfaction reaffirms its position as the ultimate luxury automotive experience.

Not to be outdone, outgoing SBR President Rod Hersberger also achieved a “number one” rating among members for his more than three years of service to the region and the success we have enjoyed during his term. A lot is done behind the scenes. Those of us on the board are aware of how much time the president position takes and of Rod’s commitment. He put together a great team and kept everyone on task. Your editor thanks you. Equally, I wish to enthusiastically acknowledge the commitment we now have from new President Steve Doll and incoming Vice President Lorraine Gray. It looks like the region remains in very good hands and we can expect great opportunities to drive, socialize, and discover new places. It’s all in the teamwork and these two are now the captains. It looks like the start of a superb year.

SBR’s 2023 HOLIDAY BRUNCH

O

12

Story by Doreen Shinn

n Sunday, December 10, a spectacular day awaited more than 100 members and guests of the Santa Barbara Region when they met at the Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo to enjoy the annual holiday brunch. As usual, the club did a magnificent job in seasonally decorating the banquet room and arranging beautiful table settings. Members arrived with unwrapped toys to be delivered to Santa Barbara’s Unity Shoppe, to help make the season bright for some less fortunate children this year. Rem Laan and Dennis Power delivered these toys after our brunch. President Rod Hersberger addressed us by first acknowledging Richard Nuttall, who is also a member of Spanish Hills and, as such, saved us $1,000 on the room rental. Rod continued by welcoming representatives of our two dealer sponsors: Rene and Nicole Verbrugge from Porsche Santa Barbara and Mehran and Megan Forutan from Rusnak Porsche Westlake. Rod reminded everyone to consult our magazine Der Auspuff for a list of advertisers when needing products and services. Advertisers noted in the room today were Steve Doll Real Estate and Paula and Henry Hinck of Schneider Autohaus, who also sponsored our new member event held last July.

DER AUSPUFF January/February 2024

After we all enjoyed a fabulous buffet and omelet station put on by Spanish Hills, Rod continued by acknowledging past region presidents who were in attendance: Joe Schneider, Dave Stone, Nicolas Liakas, and Rem Laan. He also acknowledged current elected board members Steve Doll and Tom Sutphen, as well as appointed board members: Dennis Power, editor; Bob Clarke, advertising; Sue Kinsling, membership; Randy Kinsling, insurance; Randy Fishwick, webmaster; Dave Stone, dealer relations; Lionel Neff and Art Shinn, activities co-chairs; and James Oldham, archives. Doreen Shinn was gratefully acknowledged for assistance with managing event details, proof-reading, and other general support. In addition to Lionel, thanks were also expressed to Steve Geldman for organizing some fantastic events and Ron Mulick for some great drives. There are a lot of arrangements and logistics going into organizing our events, which form the bulk of the editorial content for Der Auspuff. Photographers include Steve Geldman, Gary Krueger, Nicolas Liakas, Dennis Power, Robert Watt, Randy Fishwick, and Bill Hallier. Their work provides the color for our magazine.

The club continues to be engaged with our communities. We donated $1,350 to Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, which we visited in March, and $1,000 each to: the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara Co., Carpinteria Unit; the Boys and Girls Club Greater Conejo Valley; Girls, Inc., Carpinteria; Gold Coast Veterans’ Foundation; and Blue Light Canine Foundation. Lionel Neff gave an update on upcoming activities. Printed flyers on the tables outlined activities for 2024. He acknowledged the members of the activities committee: Bob Clarke, Steve Geldman, Randy Fishwick, Steve Doll, Ron Mulick, Bill Hallier, Dennis Power, and Rod Hersberger, along with his co-chair Art Shinn. Nicolas Liakas advised of our club’s upcoming 60th anniversary celebration, to be held on July 20 at the Santa Barbara Hilton. Carole Mathieu added that in January the Porsche Mademoiselle Society is putting on a morning whale-watching trip in the Santa Barbara Channel. Tom Sutphen announced our election results for the next two years: Steve Doll, president; Lorraine Gray, vice president; Jim Brown, treasurer; and Doreen Shinn, secretary. He also announced that for 2023 Sue Kinsling has been named Woman of the Year and Rod Hersberger Man of the Year. Bob Clarke, our advertising manager, worked with advertisers and members in organizing some fabulous door prizes that were given away to many lucky members. Incoming president Steve Doll thanked everyone for their votes and invited more people to join in planning. Finally, Rod thanked everyone for their support during his four years as president and wished everyone a wonderful holiday season. Doreen Shinn is PCA/SBR Secretary and vounteer extraordinaire

Introducing the New General Manager of Rusnak Westlake Porsche Story by David Stone Photo by Steve Geldman

I

n late September, we heard a rumor that there had been a “changing of the guard” at Rusnak Westlake Porsche. Long-time GM Keith Goldberg had reportedly been transferred to the Pasadena dealership, and the Pasadena GM had taken over the duties at the Westlake store. The rumor was true, and Mr. Mehran Forutan is now fully entrenched as the man in charge of Rusnak Westlake Porsche. We recently had the pleasure of meeting this cordial gentleman and learned about his background. Mr. Forutan was born in Iran with two older sisters and a younger brother. The family immigrated to Hamburg, Germany, in the mid-1980s. He was forced to stay behind as he was a teenager and eligible for military service. After an arduous year of cross-country travel on his own, he was able to reunite with the family. He attended school and worked for a brief time as a stockbroker. It was there that he also met his future wife, Megan. They decided that it was best to raise a family in the United States. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1990 and ultimately became citizens. They reside in Bell Canyon and have two adult sons. As empty nesters, they enjoy international travel, charity work, and vegetable gardening at home. Mr. Forutan began a successful 15-year career as a realtor for Coldwell Banker, becoming a member of the President’s Club representing the top 4% of salesmen nationwide. When the housing market slowed in 2008-2009, he took the advice of several friends in the automotive industry and gave sales a try. He joined the Rusnak family in 2010, selling BMW. In his first year, he achieved “Victory Lap” status as one of the top 20 salesmen in the country. During his 14-year career with the Rusnak group, Mr. Forutan worked in various positions with BMW and Audi 14

DER AUSPUFF January/February 2024

as he rose through the ranks. In September 2019, he was promoted to General Manager of Audi Pasadena, and in June 2022, he was named General Manager of Porsche Pasadena. When he left, the dealership was ranked 6th in the nation for new car sales. Additionally, his Pasadena team won the 2023 Western Region Porsche Restoration Challenge in Monterey with a stunning 1968 911L. When he arrived at the Westlake store, Mr. Forutan’s first directive was to move his upstairs office to one on the showroom floor where he could better interact with customers and staff. He then set to work removing the dealer markup stickers from all non-sports cars, including Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, and Taycan. He hopes to one day be able to sell all Porsche models at MSRP. In the few months he has been at the helm, Rusnak Westlake Porsche has moved up four positions in the national dealership sales ratings. Mr. Forutan is looking forward to working with our region as an advertiser and sponsor of our events. He encourages our members to stop by the dealership for coffee and conversation anytime. He wants to firmly establish Rusnak Westlake Porsche as the premier dealership that it is and one that provides a transparent, enjoyable sales experience. He said, “Our commitment is to deliver an experience as exciting as the cars we sell.” We have no doubt that he will do his best to make that happen.

The Nethercutt Collection Story by Steve Geldman

A

ll our planned drives and events start with a story. Those of you who have read my Der Auspuff features in the past, already know one is coming. Past President and fearless leader Rod Hersberger asked me to plan a Nethercutt Museum experience for our members. I assumed this would be much easier to plan and conquer than the Peterson Museum event I put together last January. After his bribe of treating me to lunch and an adult beverage, I rapturously replied “yes.” On the crystal clear morning of last November 9, our group met in Moorpark. None of our drives or events are planned and executed by one club member; it is with a host of SBR volunteers we are so fortunate to have in our region. Membership Chair Sue Kinsling was there bright and early to get all attendees signed in. This was a near sold-out event as

56 members had pre-registered. After a brief lecture of do’s and don’ts, we departed on an easy 28-mile freeway drive to the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar, on the east side of the San Fernando Valley. Once we arrived at the museum, Doreen Shinn jumped in for the final roll call. Then, Treasurer Howard Rubinstein took care of our financial obligations with the museum. My personal thanks to all of them! In 1923, J. B. Nethercutt moved from South Bend, Indiana, to live in Santa Monica with his aunt (the founder of Merle Norman Cosmetics). His love of cars began in 1956 and with reserves in hand his collection grew. As more cars were acquired and restored, he was determined to share his masterpieces with the public. In 1971, he and his wife Dorothy opened the museum and it has been free to the public since then. (continued)

There are two buildings to the museum. One is simply referred to as The Nethercutt Museum and admission is free for all guests. This offers a self-guided tour that houses an amazing 120+ antique, vintage, black iron, and classic automobiles from the early to mid 20th century. In addition, outside in the rear of the building is a 1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive with a 1912 Pullman Private Car. How these massive beasts of steel and iron were delivered and installed at the museum would be like trying to explain how Stonehenge was created. It’s worth seeing. Across the street, their other building is known as The Nethercutt Collection. This is where our docent-led tour began. This multistory facility houses some of the rarest and finest automobiles as well as unusual automotive mascots such as hood ornaments and radiator caps. Our docent talked about many vehicles of the era, such as the 1931 Packard 845 Deluxe Eight Sport Sedan and their 1933 Duesenberg Model SJ Arlington Torpedo Sedan. 16

Although this event was to be focused on the automobile, I think what blew many of us away was presented on their top floor. Here they have an assemblage of mechanical musical Instruments, many of which were demonstrated during our tour. A favorite of mine was the 1912 Hupfeld Photoliszt Violina designed and manufactured in Leipzig, Germany. Approximately 1,000 of this combination of player piano and violins were built with 100 of those delivered to the U.S. Multiple violins are placed within a circle as a rotating horsehair bow mechanically plays each instrument, creating incredible music accompanied with the player piano. The grand finale for the day was their Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ. It was another educational and fun event for our members. I also thank the member photographers who have posted so many photos of this event on our SBR Flickr page. Lastly, thanks to those who attended. For those who missed it, I encourage you to check out the website at nethercuttcollection.org and plan a visit of your own. Steve Geldman has been a member of PCA since 2016. fter five years of anticipation and planning, on its 75th anniversary Porsche was back at Weather Tech Raceway Laguna Seca to celebrate its icons: both race cars and drivers. Along with Alwin Springer, West Coast icon Patrick Long was a Grand Marshall and among 50 other “legends” greeting visitors, signing posters, speaking at events, and, yes, racing. There were over 300 race entries (a new record) and a beautifully curated mix of many of the most significant and rarest road and track cars that have ever set a tire on a circuit. The action took place last September 28 to October 1. In the November/December edition of Der Auspuff, I wrote about the activities in the infield—“Rennsport Reunion 7: Part 1, the Infield.” Inside the track perimeter, one could visit vendors, walk through displays, meander among the garages, hear speakers, and engage drivers and mechanics between stints on the track. In the current issue, I turn it over to one of our region’s key motorsports photographers: Steve Geldman. He, too, captured some of the action in the infield, but with his trackside media pass he caught the real action: the race cars and the drivers doing what they do best. Steve took over 5,000 images: that quantity being one of the advantages (and disadvantages) to setting your digital camera to burst mode. With Steve’s advice, I’ve tried to select a few of the pictures that show racer-oriented infield activity, races of the various historic classes, and some of the conditions (e.g., rain). Of course, there will be one of the “corkscrew.” –Editor Steve Geldman has been a member of PCA since 2016. He drives a 2016 911 GTS in Sapphire Blue Metallic.

Grand Prix, Los Angeles & Santa Barbara Regions High Performance Driver Education and Instructor Training Story and Photos by Glenn Crawford

t was October 15, on a hot, clear Sunday. Event check-in began at the Desert Poppy Inn in ruggedly beautiful Lancaster. At the hotel, John Quick provided the tech inspection, for those who needed it, followed by a visit to event organizer Suesan Way Carter and Zone 8 Rep Lori DeCristo. They all made everything feel welcoming and go very easy, handing out wristbands, windshield stickers, and the spiffy, new, event T-shirts. By late afternoon we were all attentively seated and in the classroom for in-person learning from professional presenter and GT4 driver Ian Anderson. Soon-to-be track aficionados sat along with a variety of more seasoned drivers and instructors, preparing for a life-changing event. Since PCA is about the people, not just the cars, following class many of us went to dinner at Gino’s Ristorante, joined by PCA National DE Chair Mia Walsh. Early Monday morning started with butterflies for many, lining up at the gate of Willow Springs and taking in the history of the track that first opened in 1953. Waivers signed, wristbands on, we rolled through the gate and drove around the big green wall at the southeast corner of Big Willow and, voila, we were at Streets of Willow, our track for the day. Next came finding a spot to park, unload, and set up our pit areas. I walked over to Tech Inspection and helped John Quick

with a handful of newly arrived cars and drivers, hearing the admonishment, “please, if possible, don’t arrive late to a driving event.” Here is where things started to feel different from normal DEs; this is a special day as we are not only doing a High Performance Driving Event (HPDE), but concurrently a PCA National Instructor Training for those who successfully complete the course. There is a buzz in the air. The HPDE Instructor meeting started at 0800, followed Chief Driving Instructor Nick Perdikaris conducting the driver’s meeting and Safety Crew Chief Candy going over what the flags used by the corner marshals mean to communicate to the drivers on the track. Finally, instructors are paired with their students for the day. I was assigned two; #1 is here, but where is #2? Did I mention, “please, don’t be late”? At 9:00, the Red Run Group for instructors and advanced drivers is sent out from the hot pit for the first 20-minute session. Then, groups of drivers graded levels of experience—identified as Yellow, Green, and Blue run groups—follow in order. A special group was designated as the Black Run Group for the instructor candidates. At about 12:20, after everyone has had two sessions in the morning, we all broke for lunch to cool down, refuel, and rehydrate. What was really special for me this day was that my two sons, Brandon and Justin, were in

the Instructor Candidate group and we got to chat a bit about how it was going. “The instructors and curriculum are really challenging,” they say, which is great news! During the lunch break, a few drivers with family or guests attending go out to do parade laps at highway speeds (slow) to show what it’s like on the Streets track. At 1:30 we begin getting back on the track, ready to shake off the food coma. All is well until I see a yellow flag at Turn 2, followed by a dust cloud, telling us that a 911 is parked in the dirt inside of the turn. It’s a minor issue for a driver to have an “oops,” but unfortunately the car ended up releasing a bunch of slippery antifreeze when being towed back to the pits. This meant a delay for the track service patrol to soak it up and blow it off so it was safe for all of us. All else went smoothly: sessions were driven, students were happy but exhausted, and once off the track everyone debriefed about their performance. By 5:00 we were all wrapped up and headed back past the wall and out the gate. The National Instructor training appeared to have gone very well and the majority of candidates passed. Another successful track day is in the books!

Ünstock 2023: A Celebration of Modified Porsches Photos by Steve Geldmann

O

n Sunday, November 12, 2023, the Porsche Club of America hosted its third annual Ünstock event at HRE Performance Wheels headquarters in Vista, California. The event was a celebration of modified Porsches, with over 160 cars on display. Spectators were also able to enjoy food trucks, live music, and tours of the HRE factory. Ünstock 2023 was a great opportunity for Porsche enthusiasts to see some of the most unique and modified Porsches in the country. The cars on display ranged from subtle modifications to complete overhauls. There was

something for everyone to see, from classic 911s to icons and modern Cayennes. In addition to the cars on display, Ünstock 2024 featured a number of vendors selling Porsche parts and accessories. Visitors were also able to take tours of the HRE factory and see how Porsche wheels are made. SBR’s Steve Geldman had his 911 GTS accepted for display (see the 911 Carrera GTS in Sapphire Blue Metallic below) and shares with us the photos on these two pages. —Editor

Y

ou’ve heard of the test pilots Chuck Yeager and Neil Armstrong. Yeager was the first man to break the sound barrier in an X-1. Armstrong piloted the X-15 on seven test flights and later was the first man to set foot on the moon. Edwards Air Force base is crawling with test pilots; the USAF Flight Test School is what they do there! Wednesday, January 17, there will be a drive to and tour of Edwards Air Force Base outside of Lancaster. We will arrive at the base at 11:00 and proceed to the mess hall for lunch. From there we’ll have a guided tour of the legendary Air Force Flight Test Museum followed by a tour of the base via a USAF bus, including a drive down the flight line. There will be an opportunity for a group photo in front of a USAF XR71. This event is limited to 40 attendees and the registration period will end two weeks before the event. Due to national security requirements, during registration and sign-up you will need to provide information other than just your credit card. This information will be kept secure and is only shared with the Air Force Base Security and is one of their requirements to enter the base: open only to US citizens and green card permanent residents. To register, go to msreg.com/EdwardsAFBTour. Cost is $40 per person, which includes lunch, the activity fee, and a contribution to the Air Force Flight Test Museum. A Taste of Italy Driving Adventure

T

February 17, 2024

he SBR “A Taste of Italy Adventure” will start with a spread of tasty delights at Porsche Santa Barbara compliments of Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge. Then, while sitting in our Porsches raring to go, imagine if you will you driving your Porsche through the Italian countryside with that very special “someone.” The ocean to the west reminds you of the Mediterranean and the mountains, hillsides, and flora are reminiscent of an Italian countryside. Our drive takes us through backroads where the handling characteristics of our Porsches seem to defy the laws of physics., only to be reminded of our limitations by the proverbial “elbow to the ribs” followed by the “slow down” admonishment. Our drive will take us to the authentic Italian kitchen at Trattoria Uliveto in charming Old Town Orcutt, and our host, Alfonso Corti, awaits us with open arms. Our club is being provided the private dining room where we will be served a sumptuous luncheon starting with a mixed green salad and followed by your choice of Chicken Parmesan with spaghetti, or Filet of Sole Provencal with a

This event will be limited to 80 participants. Reservations can be made at msreg. com/italyadvernture starting January 10 and ending February 9, or before if sold out. Menu selection choices will be available when you make your reservations. Driving instructions will be provided one week before the event. Questions?—contact Lionel Neff at zuma13@msn.com.
