ifty years of Porsche driving experiences, a half century of fun and competitive engagements, five decades of friendships that last a lifetime – this is the common tale of the members in the Porsche Club of America, Santa Barbara Region. What started in 1964 continues to grow as it becomes stronger yet in 2014! What began as a subset of the Los Angeles Region has become the most active and engaging PCA component. Somehow our club’s founders instinctively realized that the creation of the Santa Barbara Region would one day become home territory to wonderful and memorable people, the locale for the most scenic and challenging driving events, and a multiple national award winner. Among its achievements: National Region of the Year, Zone 8 Region of the Year, National Family of the Year, National Best Newsletter (The Heinmiller Award several times), and National Best Newsletter in Class IV (based on size of membership). Individual members have honored the region by winning or being among the top national placers in TSD Rallies, Technical Quizzes and Autocrosses. Our region received its charter on June 15, 1964. Its 50th Anniversary celebration takes place on July 19, 2014. The following pages highlight the most memorable and/or unique experiences for each of those 50 years. The accompanying photography and text were obtained from or inspired by our archives and from personal memorabilia provided by our COMMEMORATING 50 YEARS

members. The five chapter introductions present the recollections of the writers and give us a touching look into our past. Preparing and organizing the material for this Journal thus became a funfilled exercise as well as a rewarding project. A committee comprised of veteran and newer members reviewed the volumes of yearbooks, Der Auspuff magazines and other material accumulated during our 50 years to identify items included in this Journal. Committee members were John Alfenito, David Stone, Mike Pomerantz, James Oldham and William Griswold. John was the artistic director, graphic artist and production manager and thereby deserves special mention. William hosted all our meetings, James preserved and protected all our archives, Mike handled the arrangements with our printer, Dave provided much of the oral history to go along with the printed matter, and I watched and listened. My heartfelt thanks are extended to the committee. Wishing that the next 50 years are as memorable and exciting as the first half century, I am Yours truly,

Our drive will continue through the Santa Ynez Valley, eventually returning to downtown Santa Barbara and the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort. We will display our Porsches and feast on a marvelous late lunch. We’ll be joined by state and local officials and, hopefully, by a couple of local celebrities. The drawing for the incredible raffle prizes will be conducted after the meal. There will be a number of door prizes, but we are most excited about the inaugural display of an original work of art painted by our own Burt Misevic that will reflect the region’s glorious past, present, and future. In addition, a limited number of signed and numbered copies of the artwork will be avilable for purchase, as well as copies of the poster created by Der Auspuff Editor John Alfenito honoring the day of celebration.

Full details and further information will be provided to those who register. The cost for the entire day, including the breakfast and lunch, is $40 per person. Complete the registration form below and send with your check (payable to PCA/ SBR) ASAP.

SANTA BARBARA REGION - 1964-2014

The First Decade 1964-1973

T

AS TOLD BY ANITA BANKE

he Santa Barbara Region declared its independence from the Los Angeles Region in 1964, and the handful of members choosing to transfer their membership to the neophyte initiated what would eventually encompass our current region numbers and boundaries (after incorporating Ventura County into its territory). A logo was designed that focused on the Santa Barbara Mission, but it did not contain an image of a Porsche. The car would be added to the logo years later. I was among the first to carry the torch for the then newborn Porsche Club of America chapter, and I remain an avid participant in today’s PCA/ SBR world. I saw and experienced so many aspects of our club, almost all happy and exciting, along with a very few sad or tragic events. Some of the most lasting memories include how members banded together and survived wildfires, although some (including Ed Yates and Charlie & Jan Davis) lost their homes. The Davises, in true Porsche community fashion, were actually helping another family evacuate when they found out their own home was in peril. Engine problems? Not when everyone had a mechanical solution to bring forth or when you had Joe Schneider and Colin Cunningham in your midst. There were plenty of opportunities for competition among friends, such as what was known as gymkhana, events that COMMEMORATING 50 YEARS

5

1964-1973 tested drivers’ and navigators’ athletic abilities while driving their Porsches; for example, traveling at speeds of 10 mph while attempting to toss balls into a stationary barrel. Or, driving in reverse into a garage while blindfolded and guided only by the voice of their significant other. There were monthly dinner meetings with notable speakers of the time, get-togethers at various homes to craft and assemble the regularly scheduled newsletter, and the occasional drives for breakfast to a Solvang eatery known as Paul & Margaret’s. The category of Porsches driven by members doubled when the 912 was introduced. Of course, the rivalry between the owners of 356s and 912s produced contests between the two groups that included softball games and potluck dinners pitting the creative chefs among them. Pool parties and picnics were greatly enjoyed. Rallies in conjunction with other local clubs were highly attended, including a two-day rally to the Sierras sponsored by a Modesto car club. They faced adversity together, as the members bonded like family to overcome the tragic death of Bill Neal due to the violent act of a street thug. Jan Davis lost her life while “base jumping” off El Capitan at Yosemite National Park. Another challenge was to find creative ways to sustain the camaraderie when the Arab oil embargos forced almost all Porsches to become garage queens. Despite the burdens of empty tanks, the group still managed to conduct the annual progressive dinner by walking between members’ homes in the Camarillo Estates! In my opinion, the most influential member during those early years was Charlie Davis, who was club president when my husband Larry and I joined the ranks. He welcomed and guided our way in the world of Porsches. Charlie was involved in everything, coached all, and fostered the beginnings of a brotherhood that still exists today. w

AS TOLD BY PHIL REESE

he late 1970’s and early 1980’s was the era of the Santa Barbara Region’s avid interest in rallies of all types. There was a serious Time-Speed-Distance rally each year in the form of the always-wellattended “El Camino Real,” the Santa Barbara Region’s annual Zone 8 rally. There were gimmick rallies of many types, including an “Estimation Rally,” in which the character of the route was described to the entrants in advance, and they then had to estimate the amount of gas it would take to top off their tank at the end (at a gas station). We had rallies in which the instructions were in the forms of little drawings. Then, for a number of years, 1981 through 1985, I believe, we had the highlight of gimmick events, the “Mystery Tours.” The Mystery Tours were low-key, fun rallies to a destination for an overnight stay. The salient point was that the participants had no idea where they were going ahead of time, and only realized their objective as they approached it nearing the end of the rally route. The rallies were simple routes, using back roads to the extent possible, with questions to be answered about things seen (or maybe not) along the roads. Some really simple timing was sometimes included for a short segment of the route, and other gimmicks were usually included, such as questions about Porsche history or design. Advice as to what to bring along (warm COMMEMORATING 50 YEARS

1974-1983 clothing, a parachute, etc.) was provided to the participants during the pre-registration process. Registration for the Mystery Tours was always sold out. The Rallymasters wrote the rally route, arranged for lodging for the overnight stay, made reservations for dinner, and always planned some interesting entertainment. One of the best Mystery Tours that comes to mind was a trip to Morro Bay. We had rooms reserved at a very nice motel and had rented the paddleboat that provided cruising circuits of the Bay. We had a Dixieland jazz band on board for entertainment and enjoyed a multi-course cookout dinner on the upper deck of the ship. All were having such a great time that, on the spot, we extended the cruise for an additional hour. Other destinations for the Mystery Tours included Avila Beach, This ad from 1974 was an early the Calico Ghost Town, and the Union Hotel in Los Alamos. predecessor to Porsche sales in Rallymasters included Joe Boucher and Roger Kerner, Phil Santa Barbara. & Linda Reese, Burt & Marge Misevic, and well-known region member John Tuttle. During these years, the region’s newsletter, Der Auspuff, was assembled by the editor and a slew of volunteers, as they typed (actually using a typewriter), cut and pasted up (with actual scissors and paste) the pages, and then took the paste-ups to a printer for copies. Later, we gathered, usually at the editor’s home, to staple the pages together into booklets, stick on the address labels (one at a time), apply stamps, organize into zip code groups as required by our bulk-mailing permit, and then take them all to the post office for mailing. Most years, for the April issue, region members wrote outlandish articles on imaginary events and topics, created unbelievable classified ads, and invented other silliness for publication. Great fun for all. The April issue was called “Der Auspoof.” w

Masterson Porsche/Audi was a proud Der Auspuff advertiser in 1978.

The Third Decade 1984-1993

AS TOLD BY SUZI SHELLER with BOB ROE

3 18

SANTA BARBARA REGION - 1964-2014

T

his particular period in the club’s history has special resonance with us. In March 1987, I fulfilled a life-long dream and bought a beautiful black metallic 1979 911SC from a Santa Barbara physician. I also wanted to expand my social life and learn to drive my Porsche at its full potential. Through car-centric contacts I was referred to the Porsche Club and in April 1987, I attended the club’s dinner meeting at Mom’s Italian Village. Members Joe Boucher and Jerry Headley said I had to meet the club’s bachelor president, Bob Roe. To make a long story short, we were married two days before leaving for our honeymoon at the 1988 Colorado Springs Parade. 25 years later, we are still fond of saying that the Porsche Club is the best thing that ever happened to us. In addition to many of the same club activities we enjoy today, we had a few others that are no longer held. We had Mystery Tours, where you pre-paid for your one- or two-night weekend, with no idea where you were going, where you were staying, or what you would be doing. In 1987, Phil & Linda Reese took us to Morro Bay via a scenic back roads route. What you were guaranteed was an adventure in fine driving, dining, lodging, and camaraderie with other Porsche enthusiasts. We also conducted Economy Runs, which were a drive of from 50 to 75 miles on beautiful roads to see how good you were at

1984-1993 estimating your car’s gas mileage and your driving habits. There was a ski trip to Big Bear. We held a charity rally to benefit the MS Society, which ended with a catered barbecue at Brander Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley (we had participants from as far away as the San Diego Region). SBR was very involved in not only region but Zone 8 driving events. We had enthusiastic members heading out on Friday night after work to autocross (then called slalom) or time trial in San Diego, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, Willow Springs, Las Vegas, and Phoenix; returning Sunday afternoon tired but happy. We ran at college stadium parking lots, airfield runways, and fullblown race tracks. SBR held wonderful events at Pt. Mugu which brought drivers from throughout the zone. Some of our members participating included Bob Diaz, Dan Teske, Alan Surgi, Burt Misevic, Steve Lutz, Phil Boughton, Bob Bassett, Bill Sluiter, Henry Valdez, Bill Leonard, Martin Jansen, Joe Boucher, Marty Buckley, John Meaney, Rick White, Tony Morelli, Bob Roe, Suzi Sheller, plus many more. Board meetings were most often held at a member’s home with potluck dinner or dessert served. Our treasury averaged a balance of $800 to $1,500. In 1990, we had 167 members. In 1994, the first Breakfast Meeting was held at BeBop’s in Santa Barbara. We think the most influential members from 1985 to 1994 were Burt & Marge Misevic and the two Joes, Schneider and Boucher. Burt & Marge were always available to counsel the board, as well as plan and execute club events and activities. Marge put on spectacular parties for the club’s 1989 25th and 1994 30th anniversaries. Every year Joe Schneider and Joe Boucher conducted our very popular rally school and rally. When not running our events, they were out making us proud by winning rallies throughout the region and at Parade. w

1984-1993 The Fourth Decade 1994-2003

T

AS TOLD BY DAVID STONE

he Santa Barbara Region’s fourth decade was one that included outstanding leadership, innovative ideas, significant growth and repeated national recognition. In the mid-nineties, monthly breakfast meetings were established in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Santa Barbara locations included The Good Earth, Moby Dick and the Harbor Restaurant, after Moby Dick burned down during the Stearns Wharf fire. Ventura County locations included California 66 and the Way- Point Café, where it remained for the next 14 years. These were popular gatherings, and a record attendance of 140 occurred in August 2004 at the Way-Point Cafe. Some of our major sponsors included Rusnak Westlake Porsche, Cutter Motors (now the Santa Barbara Auto Group), Schneider Autohaus, Gary Betz Enterprises, New Zealand Air, VDO Gauges and Performance Products. Favorite events during those years included our annual Concours d’Elegance held at the Lake Sherwood Country Club from 19942000, Calamigos Ranch from 2001-2003, and moving to the German Auto Fest in 2004. Also popular was the annual Starlite Rallye, a 12-hour nighttime run from Santa Barbara to Las Vegas held until 2000; the annual Solvang Fun Run held from 19982003; a decade of Pozo Runs with the Central Coast Region; our annual Chili Cook-off, reinitiated in 1996; the annual El Camino COMMEMORATING 50 YEARS

1994-2003 Real Rallye, which continues today; annual Progressive Dinners and renewed interest in autocrossing at the Earl Warren Showgrounds and Camarillo Airport. Monthly SBR board meetings were held in board members’ homes, while quarterly general membership meetings were held at local restaurants that included presentations by vendors and Porsche experts. In 2001, our region helped Bob Campbell present the German Auto Fest, the largest all-Porsche gathering on the west coast. Our members spent countless hours volunteering over the next six years to ensure a quality annual event for the Porsche community. In return, Bob provided us with an annual cash gift. Our region received national recognition on several occasions during this ten-year period. In 2001, SBR was named PCA Region of the Year. That year, we also received the national award for best factored growth of any region. Throughout the decade, several of our members were consistent national winners in Parade competitions including rally, autocross and concours events. Our Der Auspuff editors included the teams of Bob Roe and Suzie Sheller 1995-1997, Doug Partridge and Sheryl Necessary, 1997-2001, and Stephen and Sherry Shafer, 2001-2003. The Shafers received third place in the national newsletter competition for Division III in 2001, and they won the coveted Heinmiller Award for best PCA newsletter in 2003. During this decade, either Bud or Carolyn Ewbank held the position of region president from 1998-2004. As a result of their exemplary leadership, incredible dedication and attention to detail, the region prospered. Membership grew from 250 to more than 600. Their enthusiasm was contagious and brought together a number of talented members who proudly served on the SBR board. Attendance at all our events steadily increased, and we enjoyed an outstanding reputation within Zone 8 and nationally. Bud and Carolyn simply set the example for others to follow and provided the blueprint for the success that the region continues to enjoy today. Sadly, Bud passed away in 2006. Carolyn went on to hold the national membership chairmanship for several years and remains an active SBR member. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their significant contribution to the Santa Barbara Region. w 30

SANTA BARBARA REGION - 1964-2014

T

AS TOLD BY NICOLAS LIAKAS

he Santa Barbara Region greatly expands its services to its membership that enjoys explosive growth and participation. The Fifth Decade is highlighted by more national honors and victories. SBR members dominate national parade competitions. For example, Joe Carastro and Joe Schneider decidedly win technical quizzes. The late Joe Boucher continued to bring home awards as rally champion. Mike Hodson’s family was named Family Of The Year at the San Diego Parade. Yours truly was awarded the National Heinmiller Award for best newsletter (twice) and for Best In Class IV (once). In 2004, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary as a region with a picnic at Freedom Park in Camarillo. It was attended by 160 members. A silent auction brought in more than $2400 for a local charity. Our two Charity Tours to the PCA Parades in Portland (2006) and San Diego (2007) collected canned goods donated to Police Departments and Military families for distribution in their communities Our region earned 2nd Place in the 2008 National Public Service Awards competition. Our designated charity that year was the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and more than $10,000 was raised from six different events held throughout the year. On June 14, 2009, SBR celebrated its 45th Anniversary. More than 200 members enjoyed the afternoon’s activities, including

2004-2013 a huge silent auction, a lively raffle, a Porsche Driving Simulator and a pictorial review of the club’s history with a presentation by Burt Misevic. The event raised more than $9,000 for our two designated charities, Casa Pacifica and the Santa Barbara Unity Shoppe. Our years’ charitable fund raising set a region record of more than $18,000 and earned SBR an Honorable Mention in the Public Service Awards at the 2010 Chicago PCA Parade. 2010 was another exceptional year for our charitable endeavors. We supported Ventura County Food Share, Hearts’ Therapeutic Riding Center of Santa Barbara and Optimist Youth Homes and Services. Our main fund raiser was our New Member Luncheon at the Four Points Sheraton. We also raised funds at our annual Holiday Party and other events during the year. Our total giving was more than $14,000 for the year. Our previously periodic daylong tours became a monthly feature that drew larger and larger participation by our members. It became commonplace to see 100 or more attending the annual chili cookoff, the progressive dinner and the monthly breakfast meetings. Weekend-long trips over the Memorial Day weekend were initiated that took our members to diverse destinations such as Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion and other National Parks. Their success called for more outings and SBR rose to the challenge by offering more weekend-long trips each January during the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Competitive events, such as the autocross and TDS Rally were rejuvenated; the former was offered four times each year, twice in Camarillo and twice in Santa Barbara. SBR was instrumental in the launching and continued success of the Festival Of Speed held each April at the AAA Speedway in Fontana. SBR continues to thrive and prosper and is eager to move forward into its sixth decade of Porsche fun, challenges and adventures. w

The 2004 running of our region’s annual El Camino Real Rally was an assignment entrusted (as always) to Joe Boucher and Joe Schneider. COMMEMORATING 50 YEARS

Jim & Terry Middlebrook took over in 2007, welcoming the region to their Santa Rosa Valley home (left), where it has continued ever since. This event remains one of the club’s annual favorites with more than 100 attending each year!
