The President’s Column I am happy to report that your club is in good shape. We currently have about 800 primary members and 500 affiliate members. This number has been flat over the last several years. Every month we gain a few new members and every month a few leave our region or fail to renew their memberships. The good news in this is our current members appear to be happy with the activities and benefits our club provides. The bad news is that we have not been very successful in bringing new members and especially younger new members on board.

REM LAAN

me at remmert.laan@gmail.com to let me know what other kinds of events you would like to participate in as well as those that have no interest for you. Finally, a small group led by Club Secretary Suzi Sheller is working on a significant update of our By-Laws. Our focus is to make them more consistent with PCA’s Draft Region By-Laws, to add detail regarding significant processes like voting for officers, and to make some changes to terms of office and term limits to provide greater consistency in leadership. I will be emailing the proposed new By-Laws to the membership in early November. Please review them and vote to approve (or reject) them on the included ballot. Enjoy your Porsche(s) no matter how many doors it has and drive safely!

Our 2019 revenues thru July YTD were $63,125 and our expenses were $61,454. We do our accounting on a cash basis, so the revenues associated with each of our activities don’t necessarily match up with our expenses each month but overall our club is in good financial health. We have also been able to build up a substantial cash reserve should we ever need it. This year, in addition to our two monthly breakfasts, we are holding at least one other event each month and occasionally two. We are also working to bring more events from nearby regions to your attention. For example, the Central Coast Region’s Autocross and Wine Tasting events in September. I am always looking for feedback, but especially from new members and younger members. Please call me at 317-294-4884 or email

From The Editor’s Desk

NICOLAS LIAKAS

Oh, no, I cannot help the Santa Barbara Region because my dog is sick. Don’t ask me to help as I am too shy. I can’t help because I have a lousy sense of direction. You want me to do what? Not me, I’m too busy shopping.

Each position on SBR’s Board of Directors has its own workload and responsibilities, but most are quite reasonable. You attend the bi-monthly board meetings, keep some records, manage or coordinate some functions – all of which require a few hours of attention every one or two months. Big deal.

I am not kidding; these are actual excuses (well, almost) people give when asked to assist in the management of the club. They don’t know what they are missing.

Truly, every member of the board is interesting and interested in achieving the objectives of SBR. Why should you help? Do good. Do service. Do host. Do success.

Let’s do a run-through on the duties and responsibilities of chairing just one of our monthly activities (for example, the upcoming Off-Road Excursion or the Jalama Beach Picnic Lunch). Here is the list of to-dos:

For more details on how you can help, feel free to contact any board member; they are listed on page 2 of this magazine. I am looking forward to working with you.

Choose a month, any month, and the third Saturday of that month;

Identify a starting point; identify ending point;

Select a restaurant or a picnic site;

Create driving route directions;

Maintain list of registrants and fees paid.

A lot to demand? Overwhelming? Doomed to fail? Nonsense! I chose the event coordinating opportunity because your helping with even just one event provides a fun opportunity for club members, is personally rewarding, gives you a chance to participate and make new friends, as well as helping the club provide the activities for which it is famous. You can be an instant hero.

New Time for Santa Barbara Breakfast Meetings The Santa Barbara Wharf management has recently changed its parking rules. Effective as of July 1, 2019, parking rules start at 8 A.M., not 8:30 as had been the case. Henceforth, paid parking will begin at 9.30 A.M. (instead of 10:30 A.M.). Therefore, our breakfast mtg. and announcements will commence a little earlier. Breakfast orders may begin any time after 8 A.M. and announcements will be at 9 A.M. to allow for an earlier departure.

SBR Progressive Dinner 2019 Reported by Doreen Pankow | Photos by Nicolas Liakas It was a picture-perfect day and the Santa Barbara Region was enjoying three of the club’s favorite pastimes: driving Porsches, eating delicious food, and enjoying the camaraderie of other PCA SBR members. Our region has been holding a Progressive Dinner since the late 1960’s. The event includes stops at a member’s home for a first course of salads and appetizers, then on to a fine restaurant for the main entree, and a final stop at another member’s home for dessert and coffee. On Saturday August 24th, the participants met at the home of Randy and Sue Kinsling in Somis, where chairs and tables with umbrellas were set up on their lovely patio surrounding their pool. We were treated to delicious spinach, fruit and garden salads and a variety of appetizers including a shrimp tray and chicken taquitos. Iced tea, lemonade and water were also provided to quench our thirst. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Kinsling’s beautiful home and patio. After a few comments by Doreen Pankow to thank our hosts, we departed for the second leg of our event, a drive to the Prime Steakhouse in Ventura. There we enjoyed cocktails before our main entrées arrived, which included prime chateau steak, grilled salmon, peppercorn chicken and vegetarian pasta, all served with tasty accompaniments. After enjoying a sumptuous meal, we drove to our final destination, the lovely home of Steve and Caroline Doll. Once inside, we were treated to a wonderful array of delicious homemade desserts including carrot cake, lemon bars, cheesecake and brownies. We sat outside on the Doll’s patio where we enjoyed a panoramic view of the ocean, the comfortable early evening temperatures and the camaraderie of friends. It was a perfect end to another fun-filled, memorable SBR event. The club’s sincere thanks go out to our hosts, Randy and Sue Kinsling and Steve and Caroline Doll. We greatly appreciated their generosity, warm hospitality and the sharing of their lovely homes. It’s the volunteers that make our events so successful and we truly appreciate all of you! Back Roads Canyon Drive to BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse Reported by Doreen Pankow | Photos by Gary Krueger and Nicolas Liakas Fifty-five (55) members and guests met in Moorpark, excited about the opportunity to drive their Porsches on some fun, twisty back roads. After attending the driver’s safety meeting, the group embarked on the 85-mile drive. Our thirty-one (31) Porsches made an awesome sight as we left the parking lot and drove up Spring Road towards Balcom Canyon Road. After coming down the tight curves through Balcom Canyon, we took Mountain Road towards Fillmore and California Highway 126. We carefully drove the speed limit across CA-126 and then over the I-5 Freeway to Copper Hill Drive. The fun began when we turned onto San Francisquito Canyon Road and drove at a brisk pace through this interesting canyon. We passed the distant site of the former St. Francis Dam built in 1924 to1926. In 1928, the dam catastrophically failed, and the resulting flood took the lives of as many as 431 people. We also passed the rebuilt Powerhouse, which is still in operation, and saw all the large pipelines climbing and crossing the canyon throughout the drive. As we neared the end of San Francisquito Canyon Road, we turned right to continue driving even tighter bends, loops, and curls over Spunky Canyon and past the Bouquet Reservoir, which was full of water from all the rainstorms earlier this year. Then we headed south, back to civilization via Bouquet Canyon Road with more sweeping curves. After driving over eighty (80) miles, we ended up at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Valencia, where we enjoyed a delicious assortment of deep-dish pizzas, pasta, salad, and beverages inside their enclosed patio. By the noise level in the room, it was obvious everyone was enjoying each other’s company and taking the opportunity to get to know several of our new members. Gary Krueger, SBR photographer, took a lot of group and individual photos throughout our lunch. Many thanks to those attending for your continued support and participation on this drive; our events wouldn’t be any fun without you!! DE R

PCA Announces 2019 National Enthusiast of the Year Photos by: Gary Krueger

The winner is our very own Doreen Pankow.

Doreen has served our region, our membership, for more than a decade as president, activities chair, tour guide, event planner, task master, principal cheerleader, arbitrator, peacekeeper and sheriff. She has been named region Woman of the Year so many times that she holds the record, a record that will not be matched or surpassed in our lifetimes. An Award Ceremony was held at the August 3 Breakfast Meeting in Camarillo. Presenting the award on behalf of the national office was David Witteried, Zone 8 Representative. SBR President Rem Laan and other officers of the region participated in the presentation. (The initial announcement of the honor was made on July 23 at the National Parade in Bocca Raton, FL.) All of us in SBR owe a debt of gratitude and expressions of thanks and congratulations to Doreen. Shout it from the rooftops: BRAVO DOREEN!

SBR’S RON WILLIAMS HONORED BY CALIFORNIA SENATE Report and Photos by: Char Williams

On August 5, a ceremony was convened near California’s Capitol by Dr. Jim Greene, California State Registrar, to honor Ron, John, and Peter, for their work in creating the world’s first electronic birth certificate and other accomplishments. Senator Richard Pan, a pediatrician, sponsored California Senate Resolution No. 345 thanking Ron “... for his outstanding, dedicated, and effective work in improving

health outcomes for more than four decades in the State of California and across the globe.” John and Peter also received appreciation awards for their contributions. “These are the pioneers,” acting State Public Health Officer Dr. Charity Dean said in her remarks. “They worked together to develop the very first California electronic automated vital statistics system that has served the millions of California families for more than 30 years. For his dedication over these decades, we are proud to honor and recognize Dr. Williams and his team.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019 AUSPUFF DE R

For several decades, Ron and his team have been responsible for developing and maintaining California’s network of electronic birth registrations, which has operated reliably around the clock 365 days a year. Ron has worked with UC Davis and the California Department of Public Health to transfer that capability and responsibility from UCSB to UCD. That task was completed in June of this year and, as a result, Ron can now «really» retire along with two of his computer science employees, Peter Chen and John Marinko, who began working for him while they were still undergrads.

Le Mans, Porsche and PCA Unbeatable Combination This past June, I checked off a big “bucket list” item. My wife Lena, son Ari, and I attended the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the oldest and harshest races on our planet. We arrived early so that we would not miss the “Drivers Parade” done each year one day before the race. Thousands line the streets of Le Mans to watch a line of amazing cars, dancers, and the drivers themselves. It was truly epic! During the parade, one of the Porsche drivers, Frederic Makowiecki, approached Ari and as Fred put his arm around him, said “take a picture of us” in front of thousands of fans. Ari had been wearing his Porsche hat and “Pink Pig” shirt. Notice Fred is handing out Porsche gummy bears to all the parade attendees. (See accompanying photo of Fred and Ari.) The next day we arrived early to watch all the festivities: French Air Force flying over, Princess of Monaco starting the race, etc. It was really impressive. We paid extra for seats in the stands that were under a roof (it rains during the race often) and in front of the Porsche garages, near the start/finish line. Being in the last row, we could stand up and stretch once in a while and they were really ideally located, or so we thought. Then we went for a walk. The next part of the track we wanted to see was the Porsche Curves. As we neared the area, we saw a giant Porsche building and headed that direction. As we got closer, we were stopped by security guards that told us the area “was for Porsche owners only.” Great! I flashed my PCA card and suddenly their faces lifted, and they whisked us to the registration area. We were given Porsche Le Mans bracelets, cards for free food and drinks, and put on a private shuttle to drive us to the observation deck Porsche owns at the Curves. As we exited the shuttle and were welcomed, we were handed a Porsche hat. We sat at picnic tables with unobstructed views of the race with a food/drink station just behind us. It was one of the best spots for photographs and to watch the race. We felt at home with our Porsche family surrounding us. We didn’t think things could get any better, so we were slow to leave. We eventually made our way to the Porsche Experience Center building. To our surprise, we walked into a beautiful, airconditioned 3 story building with Porsche Design retail, a display of some of the newest cars, and even activities for the kids (like slot car racing). The second floor had an amazing restaurant. We were seated at a table surrounded by windows and monitors so we could follow the race. Even the ceiling light fixtures were all different replicas of Porsche wheels. Perhaps this is what heaven looks like. After eating a gourmet dinner (and not hot dogs and pizza like everyone out at the grandstands), we went up to the top of the building to the observation deck. I got my favorite photo of the race there and we watched the late summer sun finally set at around 10:30 pm. Being a member of PCA added a whole dimension of fun to our holiday, with experiences that we will remember our whole lives. I hope other members take advantage of their membership and move this event to the top of their bucket lists too! AUSPUFF SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

THE NEW CAYENNE COUPÉ – THE HIGHLIGHTS

Report and Photos by Porsche.us.com

The highly dynamic lines and custom design elements of the new Cayenne Coupé truly set it apart from the Cayenne. Athletic appearance. The new Cayenne Coupé is longer, lower and wider at the rear than the Cayenne, giving it a more athletic look. The shallower windscreen angle and the steeper roof line falling sharply to the rear give the new Cayenne Coupé an unrivalled elegance.

The Coupé benefits from all the technical highlights of the third Cayenne generation in matters of the drive, chassis, comfort, connectivity and assistance systems. The optional lightweight sports packages include a contoured carbon roof, 22-inch GT Design wheels in lightweight design, seat centers in classic checked fabric, and carbon and Alcantara® highlights in the interior.

With the 2.16 m2 panoramic fixed glass roof fitted as standard, the new Cayenne Coupé offers all passengers a sense of space that is unparalleled in its segment. The rear bench with the characteristics of two individual seats offers enough space for two people as standard. Alternatively, the Cayenne Coupé is available with the three-seater rear bench familiar from the Cayenne. Rear passengers sit 30 millimeters lower than in the Cayenne. The lateral dynamics benefit from a widened rear-axle track. Powerful drive units from the third-generation Cayenne take care of longitudinal dynamics. Fitted as part of Porsche Active Aerodynamics, an adaptive, extendable rear spoiler ensures that the Cayenne Coupé delivers maximum driving stability, even at higher speeds.
