n page 30 of this month’s Auspuff you will find the region’s Balance Sheet as of 12/31/2013. Our club continues to enjoy a strong financial position while providing a wide array of services and activities. Every member of the Santa Barbara Region enjoys the many benefits of membership in the national Porsche Club of America and especially those in our local region. We all appreciate the publications, numerous social, technical, and competitive events offered every year, and the products and services available (many at discounted prices) for our Porsches. However, you may not be aware that many of our events are financially subsidized by SBR’s general account funds. In 2014, SBR is subsidizing the following activities to reduce the cost to our members: • The cost of the dinner, tables, chairs, and site preparation expenses for the May 10 Movie Night of the Peking-to-Paris Rally is being subsidized by our general fund. • The discounted fee for New Members at the New Member Appreciation gathering on May 10 is being subsidized by our general fund. • The luncheon celebrating our 50th Anniversary at the Fess Parker Doubletree on July 19 is being subsidized by our general fund. • All members will receive a 50th Anniversary, 64-page journal this year, free of charge, documenting our region’s five
decades of history, events and personalities. • The annual Holiday Party on December 14 is being subsidized by our general fund. As you can see from the list above, our region effectively manages its financial resources so that we can disburse funds to further our stated mission - to foster the enjoyment of membership and encourage life-long friendships. I am looking forward to attending the PCA Zone 8 2014 California Festival of Speed, which is being held at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana from April 4th – 6th. Zone 8 is organizing another special display of Porsches – A Timeline of four-cylinder cars – similar to what they did last year with the 50 years of 911s display. There is a registration form posted on SBR’s website to enter your car in this display of Porsches. Time Trials and PCA Club Racing will be held throughout the weekend, and a Porsche Concours (see page 32) and a swap meet are being held on Saturday. You can park in the Porsche Corral, experience a taste of the Autocross on a mini track and then drive parade laps on the big Fontana Speedway track over the lunch hour on both days of the weekend. Volunteers are needed on all three days to help with registration, direct traffic and parking, staff the hospitality tent and Goodie Store, and serve as corner workers, timers, announcers and runners. You can even be right out there with the Porsches on pit lane, directing the race cars as they enter and exit pit lane throughout the race. If you’d like to help as a volunteer, please contact Laura Manz at Volunteer@calfestival.org to find out more about the various positions. Volunteers also get free event parking. So let’s show our support by attending and volunteering at this great event!
SBR NAME BADGES Our official, strong, plastic name badges won’t harm your clothing because they’re held on magnetically! President Doreen Pankow presented an SBR check to Ron Greenwood (right), Chairman of the Gold Coast Veteran’s Foundation, which was our region’s designated charity in 2013. Last year, through fund-raising events, we were able to give GCVF over $6000. =

EXPLORE UNIQUE CALIFORNIA HISTORY AT THE HOME OF THE “BAKERSFIELD SOUND” THE COUNTRY WESTERN MUSIC MADE FAMOUS BY BUCK OWENS & MERLE HAGGARD THEN, TOUR THE LITTLE KNOWN BUT STRIKINGLY SIGNIFICANT COLONEL ALLENSWORTH STATE HISTORIC PARK Join your fellow SBR members on an exploration of two unique California historic sites! Our first destination on Saturday, March 15, via exciting and scenic back roads will be THE BUCK OWENS’ CRYSTAL PALACE in Bakersfield, a shrine to the brand of country music made famous by Mr. Owens and his band, The Buckaroos. We will enjoy a fabulous show and multi-course dinner at The Palace after touring the museum dedicated to Country Western music and artists.
Col. Allensworth
Sunday morning we will have breakfast at our hotel and then travel to the COLONEL ALLENSWORTH STATE HISTORIC PARK, which is shrouded by the eerie feeling of a ghost town. The location was the experimental community occupied by African-Americans after the Civil War up through the 1930s. Allensworth was the first African-American to attain the rank of Lt. Colonel during the Civil War, and his efforts at this site were intended to create a self-sustaining community for those seeking freedom and independence from the remnants of a slave society. After lunch on the premises, we will begin our return trip home.
The two-day adventure includes lunch Saturday, the tour of the Buck Owens’ museum, dinner and show at The Crystal Palace, Sunday breakfast, tour of the Colonel Allensworth State Historical Park, lunch at the Colonel Allensworth Park and SBR activity fee, all for only $107.00 per person! You must book your own hotel room individually by calling the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel (661-323-7111) by February 13, 2014, in order to get our special group rate of $99.00 plus tax. Please mention the Porsche group when reserving your room. Your reservation form and check must be received no later than February 27, 2014. No refunds after March 4th.
CONVOY TO COUNTRY WESTERN COUNTRY Please complete and mail this form with your check to Howard Rubenstein, PO Box 4855, Thousand Oaks, CA 91359 no later than February 27, 2014. No refunds after March 4th.

Stanley Gold To Address SBR On 2013 Peking-To-Paris Rally BY NICOLAS LIAKAS
L
os Angeles philanthropist, lawyer, financier and Porschephile Stanley Gold participated in the Peking-to-Paris Rally this past summer. Actually, he raced along a 12,000-kilometer course that took him through the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and the steppes along its border with Russia, among other remote locations. He drove a 1965 Porsche 911, when it was not being carried on what Mongolians call a flatbed truck! Stanley hosted SBR’s R.U.F. Group three years ago at his home in Beverly Hills where some of his classic and pristine Porsches are garaged. He will be visiting with us again on May 10 to personally tell us about his experiences in the rally and to display a video presentation of the entire race. Joining Stanley will be William (Bill) Erickson, known to many of our members as a master mechanic and rally enthusiast, who many years ago took part in the P2P rally driving a Buick pickup truck! Bill’s video of the race will be shown, and Bill will share his tales of this unique race.
Stanley Gold
Prior to his departure for Beijing, Stanley Gold gave an interview to the Jewish Journal in which he expressed his hopes – and fears – about the upcoming race. Talking about the 911 he was to drive, Stanley said the following: “It’s not the ideal car because, as anybody knows, Porsches are built very low to the ground and have a very low center of gravity, and you go off-road through streams and rivers and difficult terrain. But we’ve jacked the car up about as high as you can; we got big tires on it; we’ve stiffened the car, and so we think we can do it.” Stanley was most concerned about the endurance of the 911. He stated that with a 50year-old car, something is bound to go wrong. “So you’ve got to take care of the car. You can’t horse it around, you can’t win this race on the first day out – you’ve got to do it over a period of time.” The biggest challenge anticipated was the absence of roads (and maps) in Mongolia. Traversing the Gobi Desert while following camel and goat trails was a daunting prospect for Stanley. Indeed, during the actual race, Mongolia almost did him in! Join your fellow SBR members on the evening of Saturday, May 10, and hear how Stanley and Bill fared in their respective races. Take part in the discussions, see the videos, and enjoy the feast that will precede the lectures. The adjacent page has all the details on how to register. It is certain that this will be an SBR event to remember. =

THE GIMMICK RALLY
saturday, APRIL 26, 2014 We’ll meet at Rusnak Porsche Westlake at 8:00 a.m. for a light continental breakfast and enjoy some time eating and socializing with our fellow PCASBR members. We will leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. on the first leg of what promises to be a hilarious Gimmick Rally, designed and written by PCA/SBR Gimmick Rally Masters Jerry & Pam Lasnik. Our drive will take us through familiar territory as well as over some surprising out-of-the-way roads, not far from where many of us live. The rally will take just over two and a half hours of scenic and fun driving. No racing on this rally...only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winner’s circle. The top three teams, as determined by the highest number of correct answers, will be our winners and receive prizes. You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator, and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen may come in handy, too. Our rally will end at Conejo Creek Park North at Creekside in Thousand Oaks, located behind the Thousand Oaks Library. There we’ll be treated to a wonderful, catered BBQ lunch of tri-tip and chicken, green salad, potato salad, beans, garlic bread, and drinks. The cost for this great day of fun, including breakfast, a scenic and enjoyable rally, a delicious lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee, is only $29.50 per person. This is always a popular event, so sign up early. We only have room for a limited number of participants at the tables in the park. Complete the form below and send it with your check (made out to PCA/SBR) to: Jerry and Pam Lasnik, 25 Marimar Street, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360. jerry@lasnik.net No refunds after April 18th.

When SBR members got together for one of our monthly drives, an incredible scene unfolded as more than 70 Porsches carrying 140 passengers (about one-quarter of whom were new or first-time participants or recent members of our club) embarked on a day-long adventure. February 15, 2014 was such a day when we gathered in the early morning at Rusnak Westlake Porsche for a continental breakfast. You should have seen the large parking lots (yes, plural) filled with our objects of affection alongside the dealership’s inventory of new and previously owned, pampered Porsches. Parts & Service Manager Sam Abergel and General Manager Keith Goldberg were gracious and welcoming, as usual. AUSPUFF MARCH 2014
lection - Palms Connection Those members who do not take part in the region’s activities miss out on many membership benefits, chief among them being the sights and sounds as 70 air-cooled and anti-freeze gobblers roll out in formation. Twenty Porsches are in front of you, 50 behind you, and a guaranteed smile is on your face. Our first destination was only 15 minutes away, just off New Los Angeles Avenue east of Highway 23. The objective of our visit to Curt Pindler’s place of business in Moorpark was to closely examine and admire the large collection of post-World War II, high-end and collectible automobiles. His array includes some of the finest restored 356s and 911s, Mercedes Gullwings, Ferraris, and American muscle cars. Curt was able to join us, despite a recent ailment, and along with his colleague, Kelli Mastro, guided our visit and enlightened us on the details of the collection.
Timing of our visit and arrival to our ultimate destination compelled Barry Weinstein, our Activities Chair, to “crack the whip” for us to depart for Carpinteria and the Palms Restaurant. Getting there was one thing, eating a late lunch was another. First, the drive. We never drove on a freeway; our route was limited to secondary state roadways, such as Highway 23 (the Grimes Canyon section) heading into Fillmore. We turned left onto Bardsdale Avenue just before town proper, and continued onto Mountain Road into Santa Paula. Lots of twists and citrus groves framed our path into Santa Paula, and once we cleared the center of town, we began the long and lovely uphill drive into Ojai and found the continuation of Highway 150 towards the shoreline at Carpinteria. After passing over U.S. Highway 101, we turned right to the heart of downtown. The Palms restaurant, a perennial favorite of our club, awaited. Secondly, our invasion of Carpinteria. Try to picture the entire downtown area smothered by Porsches parking on the main and side streets! Would you believe we got plenty of attention? Since our tables would not be ready for almost an hour after Continued on page 18 MARCH 2014 AUSPUFF DER
While our drives are fun and exciting, I take the greatest pleasure in mingling with fellow members as we anticipate the start of the tour. Nothing but smiles and warm greetings are exchanged, while a casual observer may swear that our Porsches are talking – and taunting – each other. Ready to go, start our engines, and we’re off and running.

our arrival, many of us explored the town and visited quite a few of the shops. Of course, we were asked at every establishment if we were part of the Porsche group! Of special interest to some of us was the fabulous restaurant “Sly’s,” which is owned by one of our club members. The pending late-lunch/early-dinner was almost an afterthought. However, when the tables were ready, a mad rush ensued as everyone remembered that eating is always a part of our drives. Oh, and did I mention that the temperature in Carpinteria was 20 degrees cooler than in Moorpark? What makes The Palms unique is that patrons cook their own steaks, chicken or fish entrees on huge grills positioned to the side of the dining area. You need to get close and personal with others as you jockey for position. In the meantime, each person prepares his or her own salad and side dishes to bring to the table to supplement the entrée fresh off the grill.. Also waiting for you are four or five couples that are sharing the table. The bonding begins in earnest. Ninety minutes later, it is time to head back home.

Porsche Introduces New Targa 4 & 4S
A
ARTICLE & PHOTOS FROM PCNA t the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Porsche introduced two new models to the 911 range: the 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. These models are the first to combine the classic Targa concept with cutting edge, innovative roof technology. Just like the legendary original 911 Targa of 1965, the new models feature the distinctive Targa roof bar, a movable front roof section, and a wraparound rear window. But unlike the classic 911 Targa, the roof segment can be opened and closed at the push of a button. The fully automatic roof system stows the Targa top behind the rear seats. Both 911 Targa models exclusively come in AWD version, featuring the wider rear track and body, and the same Porsche Traction Management (PTM), found in all 911 all-wheel-drive models. It is an active all-wheel-drive system that helps to ensure the optimal distribution of drive power for optimum traction in most road scenarios, whether on long straights, through tight corners, or on surfaces with different friction coefficients. The combination of the wide body, the Targa bar, and the wraparound rear window results in an extremely sporty and low-slung profile. The 911 Targa 4 is powered by a horizontally opposed 3.4-liter 6-cylinder engine with 350 hp. Equipped with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and Sport Chrono package, the 911 Targa 4 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and is capable of a top track speed of 174 mph (175 mph with the manual transmission). The 911 Targa 4S delivers 400 hp from its 3.8-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine, and accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds when equipped with optional PDK and Sport Chrono package. The 911 Targa 4S is capable of reaching a top track speed of 183 mph when equipped with a manual transmission and 182 mph with PDK. The 911 Targa 4 will have an MSRP of $101,600 while the 911 Targa 4S model will have an MSRP of $116,200. Both cars also have a destination charge of $995. Deliveries of the 911 Targa in the U.S. are scheduled to begin this summer. = DER

THE TECH REPORT
CHECKING YOUR PORSCHE’S OIL LEVEL BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
T
he topic of this month’s tech feature may seem rudimentary, given the fact that your owner’s manual contains pertinent information on the matter (you have read yours cover to cover, right?). Nonetheless, I field at least a few requests per week from customers wishing to know the proper method of checking the engine oil level of their Porsche. The air-cooled 911’s oil system takes a bit of practice to figure out, and Porsche has further muddied the waters by delivering all sports cars sans dipstick from the factory since 2005. The current Porsche models have redesigned oil level sensing circuits that add a further wrinkle to the process. Most readers are likely well versed in the time-honored tradition of checking a conventional engine’s oil level by shutting off the engine, waiting a brief period for all of the oil to trickle back into the oil pan, and pulling the dipstick to check the oil level. If you own a 356, 912, 914, 924/944/968 or 928, this is all you need to know. The air-cooled 911, produced from 1964 through 1998, utilizes a racing-derived, dry-sump lubrication system. Instead of the traditional “wet sump” arrangement of an oil pan bolted to the bottom of the engine as the main oil reservoir, a remotely-mounted oil tank stores much of the oil while the engine is running. A large oil pump mounted below the engine crankcase draws oil from a small “sump” area that is filled by the oil tank, and pressurized oil is distributed throughout the engine. The oil pump features a separate scavenge section to siphon the oil after its journey through the engine’s oil passages and return it to the tank for redistribution.
22
DER
The reason Porsche uses a dry-sump lubrication system is twofold. In a traditional oil system, the oil in the pan can slosh to the side due to gravitational forces while cornering at racing speed. This can potentially expose the pickup AUSPUFF MARCH 2014
section of the oil pump and introduce air into the system. Porsche adopted a drysump system to its production 911 model given its sporting heritage. The other major benefit of the system is that with the lack of an oil pan, the engine can be mounted much lower in the chassis, which lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity for improved handling. A tertiary benefit of the dry-sump system for the 911 is improved engine cooling. The “air-cooled” engine is equally cooled by air and by the engine oil flowing through it, and the remote oil tank and large volume of oil (8-12 quarts depending on model) allow the oil to circulate and carry heat away from the engine. Even if your daily commute does not include a racetrack, it is imperative to keep the air-cooled 911 engine oil level in the correct range. The engine oil level is checked while the engine is running. The criteria for proper oil level inspection is that the vehicle needs to be parked on level ground with the engine at idle speed for at least a minute, and engine oil temperature fully warm. “Warm” is defined as 180 degrees Fahrenheit, or if the oil temperature gauge does not have numerical markings, approximately 8 o’clock on the gauge (see photo). Oil expands as it heats up, so the registered oil level will be lower when the engine is cold.
When all of these conditions are met, the oil level gauge should read between the one-half and three-quarter mark if the oil level is correct and the oil level sender circuit is working properly (this is not always the case). The oil level needle will go down to the zero mark while driving, or if the engine is revved up; this is perfectly normal as the increased oil pressure and volume demands of the engine as the RPM increases will lower the amount of oil in the tank. The oil level on the dipstick should be halfway between the min and max marks. The approximate difference in oil level between these marks is 1.75 liters or 2 quarts in most cases. If the level is too low, oil should be carefully added while the engine is running. If the oil level is too high, it is possible for oil to get drawn into the engine intake through the breather hoses and burn in the combustion chambers, causing smoking from the tailpipe and possible catalytic converter damage in later cars. The 964 and 993 models have the oil tank located ahead of the right front wheel, and a very long dipstick is accessible from the engine compartment. It can be difficult to accurately determine the oil level on these dipsticks, so several tries may be necessary. Be sure to fill the oil tanks of these models slowly to avoid a mess in the engine compartment.
or under-filled, the red engine oil level warning will illuminate while driving. If the engine oil level is slightly overfull in any of these flat-six engines, it is possible for a small amount of oil to migrate into the combustion chambers of the engine after the vehicle sits for a long period. This can cause a cloud of smoke to emanate from the exhaust at the next startup. However, this phenomenon can be normal if the engine oil level is correct but the vehicle has sat for several days or more.
The Boxster and 996 Carrera engine (and 987/997 engine through 2008) features a long thermal oil level sensor that is screwed into the top of the engine case, with the tip protruding into the oil sump area. When the oil level display is toggled by the driver (engine switched off, ignition key in the #2 or “run” position), the sensor is electrically heated, then cooled by the surrounding engine oil. Each segment of the oil level sensor element roughly corresponds to the segments in the instrument cluster display. If a segment is surrounded by engine oil, it cools the heated sensor enough for the circuit to determine the oil must be at that particular level. This sensor design has proven to be accurate and reliable over the years, especially compared to the mechanical
float design of the air-cooled oil level sender. Owners of 986 and 996 models should still rely on the included dipstick for the final word on oil level measurement. Cayenne models through the 2010 model year use a similar dipstick and thermal oil level sender combination. Porsche eliminated the dipstick of the 987 and 997 models in 2005. Your author has never seen a Porsche-documented reason for this move, but reduced manufacturing cost, fewer blow-by vapor emissions from the engine crankcase to the atmosphere, and discouragement of owners performing their own service on the car were all likely factors. The oil level sender in the 2005-2008 sports car engines is the exact same part as in the 986/996 models, and is very accurate within its measuring range. If the engine oil level is below or above this range, it is difficult to know exactly by how much in either case. If the oil level is low, oil should only be added in 1/4-of-a -quart increments and rechecked, then drained by the same amount if overfilled. The thermal oil level sensor in the 20092012 987/997 models with the direct fuel injection engine is more sophisticated and measures oil level while the engine is running. The display in the instrument cluster uses the same measuring segments as the previous version, but a factory-level scan tool is required to accurately measure the exact oil level, where it is expressed in a percentage scale from 0 to 100. If the oil level is the slightest amount over-

The water-cooled Boxster and 996 Carrera models saw Porsche switch to a more conventional lubrication system with an oil pan, but it retains some features of the dry-sump system, including an oil scavenge pump in each cylinder head to evacuate oil from the heads and return it to the sump, along with additional baffling in the oil pan to prevent sloshing. Porsche went as far as to call this an “integrated dry-sump” system, though it is not quite as suited to the rigors of motorsport as the true dry-sump oil circuit in the air-cooled engines. The 996 and 997 GT3 and Turbo/ GT2 models retain the traditional full dry-sump system with remote oil tank, reflecting the motorsports pedigree of each.
The latest generation Porsche models (Panamera, 2011-and-newer Cayenne and all 981/991 models) use an extremely sensitive ultrasonic oil level sender. This sensor continually measures engine oil level while the engine is running, and the level can be displayed while the engine is running or when it is shut off. The engine oil level is calculated using a complex algorithm based on a number of operating conditions, and this calculation is reset any time the engine lid or hood is opened (the system assumes that one may be adding oil). After the hood is opened, the vehicle has to be driven at least 6 miles before the oil level is recalculated. Long live the dipstick! =

THE LAST WORD
A PORSCHE LOVE STORY - Meet Mary Levoy from Santa Rosa. Her husband Richard purchased this 1972 Silver 914, 1.7 brand new. The car is completely stock and has only 12,000 miles on the odometer. Owing to Richard’s on-going health problems, the car has spent the last 34 years covered in their garage. Last year, Mary decided to have the 914 put back in driving condition, and she enlisted the help of MKS Performance’s Michael Schatz. To say this pristine vehicle garnered a lot of attention at the February Camarillo Breakfast would be an understatement. Thanks to Mary & Richard for sharing this beautiful 1972 Porsche with the club. It was fun to see a 914 of that vintage looking so new!
