I
’m looking forward to SBR’s New Member Appreciation event being held on May 10th at Rusnak Westlake Porsche. Every two years, we recognize our new members at a special event. This year, “new” members who’ve joined after June 30, 2012, will get a discount on a delicious buffet dinner. Also, an interesting evening is planned with Stanley Gold and Bill Erickson recalling their unique Peking-To-Paris Rally adventures, accompanied by videos of these two rallies. So it will be a fun event! We’re holding our Tire Rack Street Survival School for teens and young adults on June 28th at the Camarillo Airport. This is the third year we’ve produced this event, and the word has apparently gotten around about what a valuable day it is. We already have 32 students registered and more than ten on the waiting list. If you are an SBR member and want to get your son or daughter into this school, please let me know right away as we do get last-minute cancellations. If you missed this event last year, we invite you to come out and watch the students go through a series of four driving exercises in the morning and four more in the afternoon. They also attend a one-hour class in both the morning and afternoon which is taught by Jerry Lasnik, SBR member and a retired teacher from Agoura High School. The primary emphasis of the Street Survival School is a handson driving experience in real- world situations. The students
use their own cars to learn about handling limits and vehicle control. A coach rides with the students to provide instruction throughout all the driving exercises. As a result of this training, the young drivers will become more observant of the traffic situations they find themselves in and will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. They’ll learn to understand how their actions govern a car’s responses and, as a result, become safer, more effective drivers on the road. We need over 25 volunteers to put on this event in addition to the 20 in-car coaches. We are fortunate to have so many dedicated SBR members who have served as coaches for the past two years and are committed to serving in this role on an ongoing basis. We need other volunteers to help with registration, gate duty, parking, to serve as starters at the driving exercises and to lead the students back and forth between the classroom and the vacant runway where we hold all the driving exercises. Please contact Ted Lighthizer or me if you are interested in helping out as a volunteer. Don’t forget to pre-register for the 59th annual Porsche Parade to be held in Monterey June 15-21. You must pre-register in order to participate in any of the driving tours, competitive events and/ or social gatherings. Event information and schedules are already posted at http://parade2014.pca.org/, the official Porsche Parade 2014 web site. Blocks of rooms have been reserved at five local hotels, and discount rates will be available for parade entrants upon the completion of registration. I encourage all of our SBR members to participate in this great Porsche Parade.

irst of all, thank you to everyone for the complimentary comments on Der Auspuff’s new, all-color format. Switching to full color has been something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. As a photographer, it’s doubly exciting for me to see all the great photos from our region’s talented corps of photographers displayed in full color. And the bonus of offering our advertisers a color format makes the switch a complete win/win.

Our region’s 50th Anniversary Celebration is fast approaching. In conjunction with this unique commemoration on July 19th, SBR is offering a raffle with some truly huge prizes! As detailed on page 18, the top prize in the SBR 50th Anniversary Raffle is a seven-day, all inclusive European Treffen Porsche Driving Tour FOR TWO! The grand prize includes roundtrip coach airfare. If you’d like more details about this amazing prize, visit AUSPUFF MAY 2014
FastLaneTravel.com, or better yet, speak with Dave & Susan Stone, Randy & Sue Kinsling, or Steve Karolyi, all of whom went on just such a European adventure a few years ago. For me, just being able to drive the Autobahn at 150+ mph is reason enough to try for this trip. Second prize is equally compelling – and doesn’t require a passport. It’s a three-day, all inclusive weekend FOR TWO, including roundtrip coach airfare, to the Porsche Sport Driving School in Alabama. The winner and a guest of their choice will drive the full lineup of Porsche automobiles on one of the country’s most challenging tracks, and you’ll be coached by a cadre of professional drivers. You may not come back “ready for Le Mans,” but you’ll be a much better driver – guaranteed. Finally, third prize is a set of four tires for your Porsche. So, that’s three pretty amazing prizes offered in our own, regionsponsored raffle with excellent odds, as only 500 tickets will be sold. Any way you work the math, your odds of winning are far better than any other raffle of this magnitude that you’re likely to see. Enter now. Support the region and win yourself an amazing vacation. The flier on page 18 has complete details. Good luck!

SBR Hits The “Mother Road” For A Labor Day Weekend Western Adventure August 29 - September 2, 2014
Get Your Kicks...On A
n odyssey along the “Mother Road,” America’s most famous and nostalgic roadway, will surely bring back memories galore of an era long gone. Or, for those of us too young to remember traveling along Route 66, this becomes an exciting and fun way to learn its rich history as SBR explores the longest unspoiled stretch of this memory to be found in Northern Arizona. America’s most famous byway opened the west to vast migrations from the east in 1926. The eastern terminus was in Chicago, and the westbound highway ended 2000 miles later in Santa Monica, California. Once again, in America’s history, the allure of the west became part of the American Dream.

This exceptional SBR adventure over the Labor Day weekend will be headquartered at the AquariAUSPUFF MAY 2014
us Hotel & Casino in Laughlin, NV. We will travel there on Friday, August 29. First on our official agenda will be a group dinner followed by free time to explore all the riverside attractions and maybe even challenge lady luck at any of the town’s gambling halls. Each traveler on this SBR adventure will receive a Route 66 “passport” that can be presented at the numerous sites we visit during the trip. Passports can be redeemed for mementos from the Route 66 Association of Arizona, prior to our westward trek home. On Saturday morning, we will ride eastbound to the town of Seligman, where mod-
ern day I-40 and the remnants of Route 66 diverge and separate in their westerly directions. We’ll take a northwest sprint on Route 66 into the Hualapai Indian Reservation and drive up to the world-famous Grand Canyon Caverns. Here, we will stop on our journey along the “Mother Road” and descend into “Mother Earth” on an elevator for a guided tour to explore caves created millions of years ago.
We’ll then continue from the depths of the earth to one of the highest points in Arizona, traveling to the town of Peach Springs, a name given to it by early settlers who discovered peach orchards planted there by Mormons during their westward

escape. Nearby, is Keepers of The Wild Nature Park, home to more than 175 exotic animals. These creatures are former stars of show business now retired. After petting the tigers and lions, we will continue westward through the old towns of Truxton, Valentine and Hackberry (where the former general store is now a Route 66 Visitor Center). Dinner will be in Kingman at a Western-themed restaurant. On Sunday, we will visit the major center of Kingman, which not only boasts many famous Route 66 structures, but is the home of the Route 66 Association of Arizona. (Here we will redeem our passports for souvenirs of our excursion.) Then, it’s back to Laughlin to board a river boat for a delightful dinner cruise along the Colorado River.

California Festival of Speed
STORY BY MIKE HODSON PHOTOS BY RANDY FISHWICK & TED LIGHTHIZER
Certainly the challenge for any organizer in the hugely jaded Southern California car culture is to create something unique, attempting to combine disparate genres into the perfect balance in order to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Kudos must be lavished on Zone 8 for its efforts and results. It has been my pleasure to attend the annual spring Festival of Speed every year for many years. Past years have primarily focused on the numerous classes of racing, with autocross/concours/ vendor/swap meet as bonuses. This year, however, the Zone 8 powers-to-be massively stepped up their game and presented an event that featured not only excellent racing, including PCA Club racing, time trials and Porsche Cup cars, but also world class historic Porsche display cars, a concours event, greatly expanded vendor row, exotic displays, swap meet plus the Porsche corral, Supercar Sunday, Club corrals and more! Wanna drive the latest and greatest Porsche cars on an autocross course? How about seeing a fabulous display of 4- and 8-cylinder Porsche cars, from a 1951(!) 356 pre-A split window coupe to the fabulous 1994 928GTS! Throw in an incredible collection of 356’s, 912’s, 914’s, 924’s, 928’s, 944’s and 968’s, and any Porsche-
phile certainly is “excited to the point of enthusiasm.” Shopping for that elusive part and/or collectible? Cruise the swap meet! Feeling hungry and want to experience the eclectic selections of delicious food available at very reasonable prices? Gourmet food trucks await you! We four enthusiasts arrived at a very gentlemanly hour, transported via arguably the best four- passenger people mover on the planet, the Cayenne GTS. Tremendous capability, huge cube, more performance than most mortals can extract and headturning looks – well, what’s not to like? The destination for the day was scenic Fontana, California, home of the AAA California Speedway. As always, numerous activities were being held that day with go-carts, drag racing and an exotic auto rental company that features VERY high-end autos being offered for the hour/day/ lap. Based on the activity at the rental business, the economy is very good . . . Arriving at the payment/volunteer building, the fact that visitors were lined up ten deep at each window was a positive sign. Following the mandatory payment and waiver completion, under the tunnel we went to the Porsche parking. Hard work and forethought were evidenced by the well-organized lot, with signs pointing the way to the appropriate type/year area. We, of course, largely ignored all the guidelines and parked where “parking lot rash” was least likely to occur. Our stroll to the swap meet was circuitous in the extreme, as every glance in every direction discovered a “must see” >>>> MAY 2014 AUSPUFF DER

ntoxicating! Per the online Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of “intoxicate” is “to excite or elate to the point of enthusiasm or frenzy.” My friends, if the Festival of Speed 2014 did not meet the definition as stated above, I don’t know what to say. For me and my fellow attendees, the definition was wildly exceeded!
15
CALIFORNIA FESTIVAL OF SPEED continued member of the Porsche family, both past and present. Excellent examples of every Porsche model were in attendance, rows upon rows of eye candy. My taste runs to the mostly stock iterations of various models, with “period correctness” high on the list of attributes. Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder, with several cars exhibiting exceptional personal individual beauty, with modifications and customization sourced and imagined way outside the box. Sensory overload quickly sets in, remedied by a quick trip through the swap meet. Unlike many of our members, I am neither a mechanical nor technical guru; therefore, many of the items displayed simply are way beyond my expertise, understanding or recognition. The few items I knew seemed very fairly priced with lots of foot traffic and interest from potential buyers. Off we moseyed to the “non-911” display, filled not only with gorgeous machines but also loads of historic model info thanks to the extensive windshield signs displayed on every car. What a treat! Instead of the normal and sometimes dry “tech specs,” the signage featured model evolution, restoration facts, special features and owner info. Again, my Porsche comfort zone was greatly expanded, helping me to appreciate and admire the lineup.
16
DER
Just when I thought I could absorb little more, the “other” exotics came into view. Lamborghini, Audi, Bentley and, of course, Ferrari were featured marques. Shell-shocked, we wandered down AUSPUFF MAY 2014
the row, discussing the plusses (many) and minuses (few) of each magnificent machine. Four certifiable crazy car guys, each strongly opinionated with actual enthusiast/ownership experiences, trying to decide which of the four-wheel offerings we would most like to take home. Amazingly, the vote was unanimous. The stunning black Ferrari Enzo was the hands-down favorite, even for me with my obsessive brand loyalty. Vendor row was terrific with products and info galore. The chance to meet suppliers face-to-face and ask detailed technical questions is an opportunity not to be missed. I was very pleased to see strong activity in the vendor areas, boding well for the future of the FOS. PCA’s motto, “It’s the people, not the cars,” is so very true. The entire day was spent visiting with fellow PCA members, some from Santa Barbara Region, others from different areas. Our region had a good showing, with a particular highlight seeing Bill Sluiter, former PCA/SBR President, in fine fettle! His son, Max, was also in attendance, carrying on the family tradition of enthusiasm. Congratulations to the Sluiter family on their outstanding son! Once again, thanks and congratulations to PCA Zone 8 for putting on such a fabulous program. Upon driving home, we all reflected on what could have been done differently and/or better to improve the experience for the drivers, spectators and volunteers. We couldn’t think of a thing! =

THE TECH REPORT
THE CASE FOR THE CAYENNE DIESEL BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
S
ome may think that your intrepid technical editor has gone off the deep end, but this column will extoll the virtues of Porsche’s foray into the high-end diesel market. A low-revving and not-so-sonorous 3.0 liter turbodiesel V6 engine, that is not even a Porsche design, may be sacrilegious to purists. Cynics will decry that the Cayenne Diesel’s raison d’être is to raise Porsche’s fleet-wide fuel economy average to satisfy U.S. and European Union regulations. Nonetheless, Porsche’s “oil burner” offers a compelling package to buyers in need of a sporty and luxurious utility vehicle that is also relatively frugal and efficient. The current Cayenne lineup features a superior range of gasoline-powered engines with direct fuel injection (DFI; see last month’s tech column for more information) that are remarkably fuel efficient for their size and power output levels. However, the Cayenne Diesel can achieve almost 30 highway MPG according to EPA estimates. The standard 26-gallon fuel tank results in a cruising range of well over 600 miles. The diesel engine creates a large amount of torque at low engine RPM, which equates to strong acceleration from rest and superior pulling power for towing. The diesel engine takes its name from its German inventor, Rudolph Diesel, who patented a compression-ignition internal combustion engine design in the late 19th century. The typical automotive diesel engine is a four-stroke engine that is very similar to a gasoline engine in terms of design and layout. The difference between the two is the method of combustion.
22
DER
Gasoline is extremely volatile in vapor form and is easily ignited by an external heat source. Gasoline-powered engines use a spark plug to ignite the ingested fuel/ air mixture and force the piston downwards. Diesel engines use a fuel that is nonvolatile at room temperature, but is able to spontaneously ignite when comAUSPUFF MAY 2014
pressed to a certain level; therefore, diesels lack ignition systems. The petroleumbased diesel fuel that is available at most service stations is light oil that is refined from the same crude oil from which gasoline is also derived. Diesel engines generally have much higher compression ratios (the ratio of the volume of a cylinder when the piston is at the bottom of its travel versus at the top of its travel) than gasoline engines. Typical gas engine compression ratios range from about 8:1 for a turbocharged engine to 12:1 for a naturally aspirated DFI engine. Diesel compression ratios are usually from 15:1 to 20:1 or more (the Cayenne’s turbodiesel engine is 16.8:1). A diesel engine ingests air into each cylinder when the intake valves are opened. The air is highly compressed by the piston, and a precisely timed injection of fuel directly into the combustion chamber is ignited by the heat produced (about 1000 degrees Fahrenheit). Diesel fuel burns more slowly than gasoline, so the pressure wave created by the combustion process is more linear. When combined with a diesel engine’s typically long piston stroke, the longer duration of peak cylinder pressure results in superior torque output at lower RPM versus a similarly-sized gas engine. The same long piston travel limits a diesel’s ability to reliably achieve high RPM; the Cayenne Diesel redlines at 4600 RPM, though its peak torque output is achieved
at a mere 1750 RPM. Diesel engines can operate at extremely lean fuel mixtures, from about 20 parts of air to 1 part of fuel under load, or as much as 80:1 at idle (the ideal gasoline air/fuel ratio for optimum combustion and low pollutant emissions is 14.7:1). Therefore, diesel engines tend to be about a third more fuel efficient than a comparable gas engine. The massive low-end torque and fuel efficiency of diesel engines are the primary reasons they are used in trucks, tractors, ships, and as stationary generators. The torquey nature of diesel engines dictates their being stout and overbuilt, with iron engine blocks and strong forged crankshafts. This equates to long-term durability, and most passenger diesel engines can reliably run over 250,000 miles without a major rebuild. So far, the diesel engine sounds like a win-win scenario for typical American stoplight-to-stoplight driving conditions. The problem is the common perception of diesels being smoky, clattery, and slow. This perfectly describes the diesel engines offered in the American market in the 1970s and early 1980s. However, great advances in electronics technology have bred a new generation of clean and efficient diesel engines. Diesel fuel is heavily subsidized by many European Union countries, as the efficiency of modern diesel engines contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions. This has spurred the development of
diesels to the point where approximately 50% of new passenger vehicles sold in the E.U. are diesel-powered. Ever-tightening fuel economy standards in the U.S. have made the prospect of offering diesel-powered vehicles to the American market more palatable for automakers. The main barrier to the diesel’s acceptance in the U.S. market is memories of the stinky and smoky diesels of yesteryear. Modern diesels are almost as quiet as gas engines thanks to modern injection and precision piston/combustion chamber design. The Cayenne’s 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel is a thoroughly modern design from Porsche’s parent company, the Volkswagen/Audi Group (VAG). As is the norm for diesels, the horsepower output is relatively low at 240, but the torque figure of 406 ft-lbs is impressive (the gasoline Cayenne V6 displaces 3.6 liters and has 300 HP, but only 295 ft-lbs of torque). This impressive torque figure endows the Cayenne Diesel with the same towing capacity as its gas V8-powered siblings (7,700 lbs) while returning fuel economy figures that are almost 10 MPG higher. The turbodiesel V6 features the latest in common-rail direct fuel injection. As mentioned last month, Porsche’s gas DFI injection systems can operate at up to 2,000 PSI; the higher compression ratio of the diesel engine dictates an even loftier maximum injection pressure of 29,000 PSI! The basic layout of the injection system is the same, except the diesel uses special piezo-electric fuel injectors instead of the conventional solenoid injectors of the gas DFI engines. These extremely precise injectors allow for two pre-injections of fuel per cycle to aid combustion before the main injection event, and up to three post injections for emission reduction purposes.
Older diesel engines produce large amounts of soot, along with high emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), which is a smog-forming agent. Strict U.S. regulations on soot and NOx levels for modern diesel passenger cars dictate complex and expensive exhaust after-treatment systems (though the same standards for large commercial trucks, ships, and other machinery are incredibly lax; witness the large amount of black smoke belching from the stacks of any large truck on the road!). The plethora of emission control hardware is the primary reason for a diesel’s increased cost over a comparable gas-powered vehicle. Like all diesels (and many non-German gas engines), the Cayenne uses an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system to recycle some of the exhaust gas back into the intake. This dilutes the intake air and reduces the temperature of the combustion chamber, since a diesel’s intense combustion pressure results in high NOx emissions. Modern EGR systems are very sophisticated, with a bypass-able heat exchanger to cool the incoming exhaust gas and numerous sensors to monitor the system’s performance. An electronic throttle body is installed ahead of the intake manifold; it is normally open (diesels traditionally lack
a throttle body, instead controlling engine speed and load via the rate of fuel injection), but the engine control unit partially closes it as necessary to regulate EGR flow during various operating conditions. The Cayenne Diesel also features three separate exhaust after-treatment systems. The first is an oxidation catalyst, similar to the catalytic converter on any modern gasoline engine. This two-way catalyst converts carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC, which is unburnt fuel) into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). Next in line is a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to capture excess soot particles present in the exhaust. This platinumcoated honeycomb device can trap particles as fine as 0.0000004 of an inch! Unsurprisingly, a filter of this nature can easily clog, so there are exhaust pressure and temperature sensors before and after to monitor the exhaust flow through the DPF. When the flow rate drops below a predetermined level (after about 300-800 miles of driving), the fuel injectors will inject an extremely late pulse of fuel past the engine’s open exhaust valves to raise the exhaust gas temperatures to over 1100 degrees Fahrenheit and burn off the accumulated soot and convert it into CO2. This process is known as regeneration, and will usually only take place during a long freeway drive. Finally, there is the selective catalyst reduction system (SCR). This system uses a third catalytic converter, ahead of which a special exhaust treatment fluid is >>>>

Diesels are notorious for being difficult to cold start, so each cylinder uses an electric heating device called a glow plug to pre-heat the combustion chambers. Those who have experienced older diesels are likely well-versed in
the need to turn on the ignition and wait several seconds for the glow plug warning light to go out before attempting to start the engine when cold. Modern diesels use a fast-acting glow plug system and precise injection. These engines can be started immediately.
23
THE CASE FOR THE CAYENNE DIESEL continued injected. The fluid in question is a synthetic form of urea, which is chemically similar to cow urine (yes, you read that correctly). Porsche/VAG calls this fluid AdBlue, and it is stored in a 5.5 gallon tank at the rear of the vehicle. The AdBlue solution forms ammonia, which reacts with any remaining NOx molecules in the SCR catalyst and converts them into pure nitrogen and water. The AdBlue fluid is injected at approximately 5% the rate of fuel injection, and each tankful lasts approximately 10,000 miles before replenishment is needed. Because of the fluid’s importance in emission reduction, staged warning messages appear in the instrument cluster when the fluid level is low. If the warnings are not heeded by the driver and the AdBlue reservoir empties, the engine management disables the starter until fluid is added.
Time will tell if American consumers are willing to cope with the additional cost and complexity of modern diesels in order to reap the fuel economy and torque benefits. Even with the fuel savings, it would take almost eight years to recoup the additional $6,000 that the Cayenne Diesel costs over the gas V6 version if both are driven 15,000 miles per year. If you frequently drive long distances and/or tow a trailer, the diesel version is a good option. Even if a compression ignition Porsche is not your bag, a smaller modern diesel car is a great commuter car alternative to the ubiquitous hybrid. The diesel will likely achieve similar fuel economy without the worry of large battery packs and high voltage cables. =
STATE LIC. # 467286
Modern diesel maintenance is similar to that of a gasoline engine car, minus the spark plug replacement requirement. The Cayenne Diesel uses a special low ash
oil to protect the DPF, and it should be changed every 5,000 miles. The fuel filter is extremely important and should be replaced every third oil change. The AdBlue fluid should be refilled every second oil change or as needed.

Celebrate The 4th of July The Old-Fashioned Way
With A Parade!
…not by simply watching it from the sidelines but by being a part of it! Our club will slowly cruise down Santa Barbara’s State Street past the large crowd lining the boulevard with our Porsches decorated in 4th of July red, white, and blue finery. (A large part of the fun and camaraderie of this day is actually decorating our cars at the staging area alongside our fellow PCA/SBR members.) Two years ago, the Porsche Club was invited to take part in Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade. We had such a good time that we decided to participate again last year. The Porsches were so popular that parade officials moved our position from the back of the 2012 parade to the front of the 2013 parade!
Porsche Club members who participated agreed that they had the time of their lives. We waved to and interacted with kids of ALL ages dressed in their finest 4th of July costumes. There’s something about a pack of colorful Porsches that drives the crowd wild, and the cheers drowned out the roar of our engines. Cost for this day of fun is practically free – only a $5.00 per person activity fee. Please send your checks, made out to PCA/SBR, to our parade coordinator, Nadine Tracy, at the address below. As the parade officials do not decide staging locations until we get closer to the 4th of July, all of you who sign up will receive additional information as soon as it’s transmitted to Nadine. You can plan on meeting mid-morning to line up alongside the parade route. Details of other Santa Barbara 4th of July celebratory events and activities following the parade will be given to you by Nadine as soon as they are made public.
