Anniversary Journal and poster. Thank you, John, for sharing your incredible talents and for the countless hours you contribute to make sure we receive our favorite Der Auspuff magazine on schedule each month.

t’s not too late to enter your car in our 38th annual Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, October 12th, at the beautiful grounds of the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village. We had a wonderful turn-out last year and hope to have even higher participation this year. All judged and display-only entries also include a delightful lunch on the lawn adjacent to a waterfall, and you may purchase extra lunches.

Randy Fishwick is serving his sixth year as SBR’s Webmaster. Randy works totally behind the scenes maintaining and providing enhancements to SBR’s www.pcasb.org website, such as the addition of our Advertising section. He continually updates the website with future activities, not only for SBR events, but also for other car-related activities in our communities. On the left-hand side of SBR’s Home Page, you’ll find a variety of helpful links. With these you can visit our advertisers’ websites, go to the web pages of PCA or Zone 8, order an SBR name badge, or actually download an application to join our region. Thank you, Randy, for making all this information so readily accessible to our members.

There are six divisions in the judged competition ranging from Full Concours to Wash & Shine. You are competing with cars in similar classifications within the various divisions. If you don’t want to enter the judged competition, you can still park your Porsche in front of the hotel in the Display Only category. I am entering my 1995 993 Carrera in the Street Division this year. Don’t miss this opportunity to display your favorite Porsche(s).

Chet & Joan Yabitsu are serving their eighth year as SBR’s Distribution Managers. For most of those years, they applied the mailing labels to over 700 magazines each month, sorting them by zip code for bulk mailing. Members occasionally received personalized, yellow Post-It notes from Joan in their magazines. The monthly mailing task is now being done by Sir Speedy (absent the personal notes), but Chet & Joan still oversee our relationship with the post office and work through various issues related to mailing the magazines to all our members. They also facilitate payment to the post office for our bulk mailing. Thank you, Chet & Joan, for your many years of dedicated service to our club.

I thought you might enjoy learning more about what some of our Board members do to make sure we are well-informed about SBR, Zone 8 and other car show activities. John Alfenito is finishing up his fifth year as SBR’s Editor. John also served as photographer and Cover Editor for several years prior to becoming the editor. John is a one-man team whose creative and artistic skills make Der Auspuff an award-winning magazine. He is very organized and keeps track of a lot of details to make sure all the various contributors meet deadline. John was instrumental in negotiating better rates so we could go to an allcolor newsletter, and he designed the beautiful layout for the 50th

THE R.U.F. REPORT

A Visit To St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church STORY BY JEANNE MCNAIR PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS

St. Barbara’s church is located on a bluff above Highway 154 in Santa Barbara. The beautiful sanctuary is stark white with the traditional Byzantine dome, which is covered in blue tiles. We learned from fellow R.U.F. member Nicolas Liakas that most modern-built Greek Orthodox churches are in the shape of a cross and have the iconic dome atop the sanctuary. He told the group that the inside of the dome is representative of heaven. He also related that the blazing white and blue of this church is reminiscent of those in the Greek isles because the white reflects the

intense sun there and keeps the interiors cool. (The more traditional churches built in the Byzantine tradition can be octagonal, circular, or in the shape of the cross.) The church has lovely gardens, including one for meditation. The property has a separate Sunday school and a large reception hall with sweeping views of the mountains and ocean. When we arrived at the church, the aforementioned adage came into play again when we learned that our scheduled meeting and tour with Father Simon, the church pastor, was not to happen as he had been called away by church business. Fortunately, Nick Liakas gamely stepped forward and gave us a very interesting tour of the sanctuary and explanation of many of the icons and ritual objects in the church. The altar area was of particular interest and beauty. Intensely colored and life-like paintings of religious images flank the portic entry to the holy sanctuary, through which only the priest can enter. The paintings always include one of the saint for whom the church is named, as well as that of Jesus and Mary. The dome above the altar is covered in 17 million glass mosaic

tiles and depicts biblical scenes and a representation of heaven. Each of these tiles is set individually, and the placement is based on a precise mathematical calculation to insure the structural integrity of the whole mosaic. Nick also gave us an informative overview of the history of the Orthodox Church dating from the Great Schism in 1054, which resulted in Eastern Orthodoxy and Western Catholicism. He noted that traditionally in each eastern European country that has an Orthodox Church, the name includes the country’s designation, such as Greek, Serbian, or Russian Orthodox. Despite this, the liturgy and doctrines are essentially all the same in each of these churches. Our group was very appreciative of Nick’s knowledge and his willingness to be our de facto guide. After the completion of the tour, we went to the popular Beachside Café at Goleta Beach for a delicious lunch and enjoyable conversation. =

T

he R.U.F. August outing to St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church in Santa Barbara on August 21st was a fun and interesting event which also gave proof of the old adage: “the best-laid plans of mice and men often go astray.” Due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances, the group of 16, who originally signed up, dwindled to 11 by the time our excursion began. Seven cars departed from Ventura for the back roads drive over Highway 150 to Carpinteria. We had lovely views of the Topa Topa Mountains and of Lake Casitas along the way and enjoyed the opportunity to drive some fast twists and turns in our cars.

We Got Our Kicks On

STORY & EVENT PHOTOS BY NICOLAS LIAKAS

A unique and exciting driving experience along America’s fabled Route 66 awaited 39 SBR members as we traveled to Arizona during the Labor Day weekend for a five-day, four-night adventure into the past. The trip was full of many pleasant occurrences, wonderful surprises, and even a hee-haw experience that still lingers on our clothing. Read on to find out what happened. The big holiday weekend presented a big holiday crowd in Laughlin. Our first hurdle upon arrival was to find the promised but unfortunately non-existent reserved parking area for our Porsches. After a scramble to locate a secure area, we parked wherever it seemed we would avoid strangers parking next to us. Still in high spirits, we were ready for the start of the numerous events scheduled for the entire five-day period. Continued on page 14

OCTOBER 2014 AUSPUFF DER

O

ur Route 66 adventure launched on Friday, August 29. The group met at the Kohl’s parking lot in Santa Clarita, located on Golden Valley Road at the junction with CA Hwy 14. The destination for the day was the Aquarius Hotel in Laughlin, NV, our home for the next four nights. We stopped half-way at the Lenwood Outlet Center on I-15 just south of Barstow to stretch our legs and consume snacks.

13

Continued from page 13

We dined as a group at the Aquarius Hotel and Casino at 6:00 p.m. in a private ballroom on the second floor for a private buffet dinner. After dinner, we set out to enjoy the casino, a walk along the riverside promenade, and other things one does in Laughlin.

14

DER

On Saturday, we regrouped in the hotel lobby at 9 a.m. Our first destination on our Route 66 exploration was the town of Seligman (pronounced Seleegman). The town got its name from Jesse Seligman, the banker who financed the construction in this area of the Atlantic and Pacific Railway. The railroad fostered ranching, and the town became an important center for livestock transportation. There were numerous shops and eateries in town, as well as the Historic Route 66 Visitor Center. The main section of Route 66 was decorated with our 20 Porsches parked along the side of the road. This created quite a sight and drew the attention of the busloads of tourists (mostly Germans) that were visiting. A historic road, a surviving town, and a line-up of Porsches – what a moment!

AUSPUFF OCTOBER 2014

We then traveled about 25 miles on Route 66 westbound and entered the grounds of the Grand Canyon Caverns. The caves lay ž of a mile underground and formed part of the bed of a huge ocean. They are now completely dry! (Plus they provided a nice escape from the Arizona heat.) When the time arrived for some of our members to exit the caverns, they were told to wait for a docent to retrieve them and guide them out. However, no docent appeared, and a slight sense of anxiety enveloped those waiting. Barry Weinstein found a way to get to the top, and all were saved. As we left the caverns, we entered the Hualapai Indian Reservation en route to the town of Peach Springs, located at 4,800 feet above sea level. The town acquired its name after early settlers found peaches (probably planted by Mormon pioneers) growing at a nearby waterhole. We slowed down as we passed through town but did not stop as the only visible historic remnant of the town was a row of about 12 peach trees. Nice to know they were there. We continued through Truxton, an area given its

name by Naval Lieutenant Edward Beale, who surveyed the area for a wagon road from Arkansas to the Colorado River. Commodore Thomas Truxton was the lieutenant’s grandfather. A small Indian school was established in 1900. A proposed railway link to the Grand Canyon never materialized, so the only attraction in the town was its location on Route 66. The two remaining settlements on this part of Route 66 are Valentine and Hackberry (whose former General Store is now a Route 66 Welcome Center). In Valentine, we made another stop at the Friend of Wild Animals Park. A strange site indeed as two dozen tigers and other exotic animals (most retirees from the movie business) now call this vast barbed wire enclosure their home. Our next stop was the big town of the region, Kingman. The name came from Lewis Kingman, an engineer for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The town grew rapidly around the train station, acquiring big stores and other businesses, including the Beale Hotel, the boyhood home of the town’s most famous native son, Andy Devine, seen

in countless Western movies and television shows. The Beale Hotel has been abandoned, but surrounding it are numerous other structures in the historic neighborhood. Our dinner was at the Dambar Steakhouse, a colorful restaurant bestowed with tons of memorabilia from the “cowboys and Indians” movies (starring Andy Devine) and patronized by locals. It was here that we had our first encounter with car problems as Jim & Barbara Spencer’s Boxster spewed smoke out of the engine compartment. Jim & Barbara were safe, but the car had to be transported – all the way back to Santa Barbara – on a flatbed truck. Sunday morning brought a pause in our travels. We woke up late, lingered at breakfast, took a walk and simply relaxed during the morning hours as we did not conduct an organized event until the afternoon. We returned to Kingman for private tours of two historic museums presenting the history of Route 66. The Powerhouse Visitor Center hosts the Route 66 Museum and tells the story of the Mother Road through brilliant murals, photos and life-size dioramas. The Mohave Museum of History Continued on page 16

and Arts provided a look into the Wild West and local traditions of earlier times. Unique exhibits and a large collection of documents, manuscripts, maps and photos chronicled early mining, ranching, the era of the railroad and the prehistory of the indigenous people. Sunday evening was an extra-special event. We boarded a riverboat at our hotel for a two-hour cruise on the Colorado River. Dinner on board consisted of plated selections of steaks, chicken, salads, etc. Supplementing the food was a wide variety of liquid refreshments, the type you can enjoy since no one had to drive home! Complementing the above was a cooling breeze on the river. What was in store for us Monday morning?

We were told to get ready for the driving thrill of a lifetime! The last stretch of Route 66 for our exploration lay beyond Kingman heading southwest into the town of Oatman. Along the way, we passed by the Cool Springs Gift Shop and Museum that in its time of glory was a lifesaving watering hole for the pioneers and miners. Here, the road encountered steep gradients and presented the ultimate challenge to drivers, the infamous Gold Hill grade. First, we drove to the top of Sitgreaves Pass at an elevation of 3,500 feet before snaking down (and past the large gold mining operation still in existence in Arizona) to the little town of Oatman. Its claim to fame is the multitude of burros that freely roam the streets of the

town looking for and expecting food from the friendly tourists. (Luckily, we were forewarned to bring an extra pair of shoes and to avoid open toe shoes at all cost! More luckily, most of us heeded the warning, but pity those who did not.) This is also the town in which Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their wedding night after getting married in Kingman. Some of us chose to have lunch in the hotel where the newlyweds stayed, while others sought to sample the other eateries in town. It was here that we suffered yet a second mechanical issue as Barry Weinstein’s 997 overheated. Two gallons of water were added to the coolant, and a safe return to Laughlin was achieved. Still, the car had to be towed to the Las Vegas dealership for a proper inspection and repair. We returned to Laughlin via a different route, U.S. Hwy 95, that provided a straight shot and more accelerated speeds than the aforementioned section of Route 66. No one complained. Our farewell dinner at the Aquarius was our last opportunity to gather as a group – and listen to the numerous grievances regarding the drive to Oatman! Tuesday morning came soon enough, and each of us departed for the return trip home on our individual schedules. Five days with good friends, good times and good driving – what could be better? =

Pre-Concours Detail Clinic At Lavaggio

Thanks to the shade of a generously-sized “pop-up,” we were able to avoid the worst of the 100-plus degree sun.

SBR President Doreen Pankow’s 993 gets the final section of its hood detailed, step-by-step, as we watched in amazement.

Standing close by as the detailing process took place was very informative. Each step was thoroughly explained.

STORY BY TARA BRUNDRETT PHOTOS BY JOHN ALFENITO

We received a warm welcome from Lavaggio’s General Manager, Lydia Derian, and Marketing Director, Dustin Troyan. Then, Lavaggio proved why they are “The Art of Auto Detailing” by unveiling a before-and-after demonstration with SBR President Doreen Pankow’s Midnight Blue 993 Carrera. Doreen’s car had been completely detailed earlier by Lavaggio except for a portion of her hood. Using their groundbreaking techniques, tools, and multi-step approach, the Lavaggio techni-

cians transformed the un-detailed portion of her hood right before our eyes. It was truly amazing to see the five-step machine polishing process they utilize. Lots of questions were asked and thoughtfully answered about the techniques and products we saw. As our appetite for detailing and prepping cars grew, Lavaggio delivered with a catered lunch from their own Bistro. The delicious, healthy sandwiches and fresh fruit were well received by all, and we all appreciated the chance to step inside for some much needed air conditioning. Following lunch, we had an opportunity to admire the variety of Porsches surrounding the beautiful grounds of Lavaggio. Then, our own Ted Lighthizer shared his expertise on the Zone 8 Concours Rules and Divisions. Kenny & Tara Brundrett and other previous concours judges

in the crowd shared their perspectives of what to expect when your car is scrutinized during competition. This presentation sparked a very active round of questions from the participants that grew into an exchange of techniques, tips, and tricks from all members. The information will prove of great value in prepping for the upcoming 38th Annual Santa Barbara Region Concours d’ Elegance scheduled for October 12, 2014 at the Four Seasons Resort in Westlake Village. Our special thanks to Ted Lighthizer, Kenny Brundrett, all the first-time participants, and the wonderful staff at Lavaggio for making this another memorable event. We look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s concours in Westlake Village. =

PORSCHE BREATHER SYSTEMS

THE TECH REPORT

BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor

I

All reciprocating engines require some form of crankcase ventilation system. The downward stroke of the pistons creates pressure in the crankcase area underneath the crankshaft, and this pressure must be vented to prevent severe pumping losses and to avoid crankcase oil seals from blowing out. The earliest Porsche 356 models employed what was known as a road draft tube, or a simple pipe that protruded below the engine to vent the crankcase to the atmosphere. The problem with this arrangement is that the vapors emitted from an engine crankcase are ladened with oil vapors and combustion byproducts that escape past the piston rings (also known as “blow-by”). Besides soiling the inside of the engine (very frequent oil changes are required with these motors), these vapors contain a large amount of hydrocarbons, or unburnt fuel, which is a smog-forming pollutant. Therefore, the crankcase ventilation system has the distinction of being the first in a long line of automotive systems to be regulated by the EPA. Since the early 1960s, U.S.-market light vehicles have been required to route the crankcase vent to the engine’s intake in order to combust the harmful vapors. The vacuum created by the intake stroke of the pistons is used to evacuate the crankcase vapors. The positive crankcase ventilation

In this photo of an oil/air separator from a 996 the round pressure regulating valve and its outlet are at the left. The oil separator chamber is in the middle, and the inlet for the bank 2 cylinder head is on the bottom. The separated oil droplets drain into the angled pipe at the right and back into the crankcase. (PCV) system can be described as a winwin situation as an emission control system, as constant evacuation of the crankcase actually improves the reciprocating efficiency of the engine. The PCV system also helps to reduce sludge-forming moisture in the crankcase. All Porsches, including late 356 models, have employed some form of PCV system. For the most part, these have been unremarkable in the sense that they discreetly perform their duty, and generally do not have problems. However, the “new generation” 986 Boxster introduced a new wrinkle to the system that looked good on paper, but ultimately proved to be problematic. Most previous Porsche breather systems did not employ a PCV valve, but the M96 engine that debuted in the Porsche Boxster and subsequent 996-series 911 uses a pressure regulating valve to precisely control the flow of crankcase vapors to the intake. This valve uses a spring-loaded rubber diaphragm that reacts to intake manifold vacuum and controls the amount of blow-by gases to be ingested. This valve performs the same function as the simpler PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve that is featured on many other automotive engines. At idle and lower engine RPM, the valve is only partially open. The valve opens farther during wider throttle openings to admit the pro-

portional amount of crankcase vapors. During periods of high intake manifold vacuum (decelerating in gear), the diaphragm is sucked against the valve outlet to prevent liquid oil from being drawn into the engine . The pressure regulating valve is attached to a canister-shaped air/oil separator chamber, which does exactly what its name implies. Besides reducing oil consumption, the oil separation effect is important because excessive oil vapors can dilute the air/fuel mixture and lower the fuel’s octane rating The M96 was not the first Porsche engine to use an oil separator; the 928 and 944/968 engines each feature an oil separator that is incorporated in the oil filler neck, and the air-cooled 911 and 996/997 Turbo and GT2/GT3 use baffles in the remote oil reservoir for the same purpose. In the M96/M97 engine, crankcase vapors enter the oil separator via a hose that is connected to the bank two camshaft cover. The oil separator incorporates a cyclonic chamber that promotes a swirling effect, which separates the oil droplets from the air. The oil is flung outwards and onto the interior walls of the chamber before draining back into Continued on page 22

OCTOBER 2014 AUSPUFF DER

n the October 2012 issue of Der Auspuff, I briefly touched upon common causes of smoking from the tailpipe of Porsches with horizontally opposed (or “flat”) cylinder arrangements. One of the culprits mentioned was the failure of a certain component of the crankcase ventilation/breather system of Porsches equipped with the M96/M97 series of flatsix engines. Because said failure can be sudden and dramatic, particularly in the mid-engine 986/987 models, this column will cover the basics of automotive engine crankcase ventilation systems, but will mainly focus on the woes of the M96/M97 breather system.

21

Continued from page 21

the crankcase. The remaining air passes through the crankcase pressure regulating valve and into the main air intake pipe, downstream of the throttle body. This breather system works very well under normal circumstances, but it has an Achilles’ heel in the form of the rubber diaphragm inside the crankcase pressure regulating valve. Age and heat cause the diaphragm to tear at the edges, which allows too much air and oil to enter the intake. Unfortunately, the failure of this diaphragm can be sudden and dramatic in Porsche mid-engined sports cars, as experienced by many a Boxster/Cayman owner. A large amount of oil is sucked into the intake and combusted by the engine, which results in a massive cloud of oil smoke from the tailpipe. It is not surprising that many owners have thought this to be the demise of their engine. If this occurs in your Boxster or Cayman, pull over to the side of the road as soon as it is safe to do so and have the car flat-bedded to the nearest Porsche repair facility. Replacement of the vent valve/oil

extreme amount of oil in one or more of the cylinders, which can lead to engine damage. Most 986 Boxsters have had the air/oil separator replaced at least once by now, and some have been through two or more! The expected lifespan tends to be 50,00060,000 miles. In the past few years, we have seen more and more 987 vent valves fail. In their infinite wisdom, Porsche decided to place the 987 air mass sensor at a low point in the intake system. In the event of a catastrophic crankcase vent valve failure, oil can pool in the air mass sensor tube and contaminate the fine electrical wires within. This may be immediately apparent following oil separator replacement, or it may not show until several months later when the “check engine” light illuminates. In the rear-engined 996/997 cars, the crankcase vent valve does not fail quite as spectacularly as in their mid-engined cousins. This is likely because the oil separator assembly is mounted farther from the throttle body, making it difficult for massive amounts of oil to be extracted from the crankcase. Nonetheless, they do fail.

Here the pressure regulating valve is open exposing the torn rubber diaphragm. separator assembly is not incredibly laborintensive, as it is accessible from the engine compartment once the engine cover is removed. However, cleanup of the excess engine oil from the intake and exhaust systems can be extensive, and the removal of both systems is sometimes necessary.

22

DER

It may also be necessary to remove and replace the spark plugs due to fouling and to turn the engine over by hand to expel oil from the cylinders. In a few cases, I have seen engines hydro-lock due to the AUSPUFF OCTOBER 2014

The first symptom of this failure in 996/997s may be a “check engine” light and lean running fault codes, which is sometimes accompanied by smoking from the tailpipes immediately following engine startup. This typically occurs around the 60,000-70,000 mile mark. A less common symptom of failure is a loud squealing or squeaking noise while the engine is running; this is the sound made by oscillations of the torn crankcase vent diaphragm! It must be restated that smoke from the

exhaust of Porsche flat-six engines can be normal if the car has sat without running for several days or more or is parked on an incline. But consistent smoking from the tailpipe whenever the engine starts may be an indication of a problem with the breather system (or the engine oil is overfilled!). If excessive smoking is noted, a competent Porsche shop can perform a quick test to gauge the health of the breather system. A handheld vacuum tester, known as a manometer, is connected to the crankcase via the oil filler neck while the engine is idling and a vacuum reading is taken. Porsche does not publish crankcase vacuum specifications, but my shop and others have come up with a database of crankcase vacuum numbers for different engines. If the number is higher than specification, this usually indicates a problem with the crankcase vent valve, and it should be replaced in short order to avoid further problems. Sometimes a vacuum gauge is not even needed. If vent valve failure is suspected, try to remove the oil filler cap while the engine is running. If it is extremely difficult or impossible to remove, this is likely due to the crankcase vacuum being too high. The 996 oil separator replacement is labor-intensive as it is buried behind the intake system and at the rear of the engine compartment. In manual transmission cars, it can be accessed from below, especially if the transmission is already removed for clutch replacement or repair of oil leaks or intermediate shaft bearing replacement. Tiptronic-equipped 996s need to have the intake manifold pipes removed to access the oil separator, as the larger transmission prevents access from below. The late 2005-2008 997 models are beginning to exhibit crankcase vent valve failures, too. Luckily, their oil separator assemblies are easier to access than those of their 996 predecessors. The Cayenne and Panamera V8 engines feature a crankcase pressure regulating valve placed prominently atop the bank two valve cover. These sometimes fail, though not as often as in their sports car siblings. They are easily replaced, however. =

Our destination was the Circle Bar B Dinner Theater. This gem is nestled in the hills of Goleta, and what a pleasant surprise awaited us. First was a fantastic Santa Maria BBQ, which was one of the best I have ever had. After lunch, a bell rang announcing the play was about to begin.

The play, entitled “Enchanted April,” was set in England and Italy. The plot involved a group of virtual strangers whose lives are intertwined as they stayed in a rented medieval castle. The acting was well done and very humorous especially if you have a British sense of humor. =
