he 4th of July is almost here and I hope you all have wonderful celebrations planned with family and friends. If you want to drive your Porsche in a parade, come join in the fun, decorate your car with other SBR members and prepare for a drive down State Street to help celebrate the City of Santa Barbara’s 50th Annual 4th of July parade. Another exciting event coming this fall is PCA Escape to Los Angeles, scheduled Thursday – Sunday, October 24-27, in Pomona, CA at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel and Conference Center. In just a few short years, the PCA Escape has become an annual tradition that is not to be missed! A long weekend of non-competitive events, Escape is the perfect way to take a fall break and relax with your favorite Porsche friends. At a different location each year, in 2013 it comes to back to Zone 8 and will feature the best of southern California driving and culture. A variety of driving tours are being organized to interesting areas: Angeles Crest Hwy; Mount Baldy, Mulholland Drive; Big Bear Lake; Joshua Tree National Park & Palm Springs; and even a Cayenne Off-Road drive. Places to visit tours are also being organized to: Huntington Gardens, LA County Arboretum, Pasadena and San Gabriel Architectural Historical Tour, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Tournament of Roses House and the Float Barn, Nethercutt Museum, and of course Hollywood and Rodeo Drive. On Thursday evening after a day of tours, join in for some 50’s drive-in movies, hamburgers and your favorite malts at the DriveIn Movie Car Show Opening Ceremony. You’ll also get to enjoy the Escape car show in conjunction with the drive-in theater and car hop, so come early and be ready for some old fashion fun.

H
ere is another action packed issue for your reading pleasure. The highlight this month is our getaway during Memorial Day weekend to Morro Bay. Please see the article on page 15 for photos and details. I want to personally thank Doreen Pankow and Ted Lighthizer for planning such a magnificent trip. For all of you that attended, you know what I mean! It was an awesome trip. Lots of fun driving through Porsche style back roads, sightseeing tours, wine tasting, group lunches and dinners, and tons of fun. There
On Saturday evening, the reception will be held at the NHRA Motorsports Museum where there will also be a special Porsche display of race cars and unique Porsches. The Saturday night Gala dinner will be held directly after the reception in the newly constructed Sheraton Fairplex Convention Center. This event will sell out so keep your eye out for more information at this website address: http://escape2013.pca.org/ Plan ahead to participate in some of these fun events where you’ll be able to meet other Porsche enthusiasts from all across the country. Volunteers are needed! There are a variety of areas where you can help: Banquet Decorations, Car Show, Check-In, Goodie Store, Hospitality, Tours, Car Washes, etc. If you are interested, please contact Connie Somers at Connie747@aol.com I also wanted to let you know that we have selected the Gold Coast Veteran’s Foundation as our charity to support this year. This is a non-profit 501 C-3 organization that has chapters in Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties. All members of the board of directors are Veterans from the Vietnam War who want to ensure veterans get the support they need to reintegrate back into society and reach their full potential. 100% of funds donated to the foundation go to support veterans and veteran’s programs as the staff are all volunteers and supplies and technology support are donated to the foundation by a private company. The foundation has recently opened the Veteran’s Service Center in Camarillo where veterans can get assistance with obtaining education and finding jobs and get connected with the various military collaborative programs that provide job training, legal assistance and medical care to veterans. 30% of veterans returning from active duty suffer from PTSD so they support community-based veterans’ programs such as Monty Roberts and Reins of H.O.P.E. that provide equine therapy for those suffering from PTSD. They also provide support and funding for a 60 bed veteran’s home in Saticoy. For more information, go to their website: http://www. goldcoastveteransfoundation.org/. I am looking for volunteers to help organize one or two fund-raising activities for this cause so if you are interested in supporting this veteran’s program, please contact me. was even plenty of free time to seek out more activities on our own or joining up with other members. For members that have never attend one the SBR’s weekend getaways, they are absolutely the best way to get to know your fellow members, and are always so much fun! Personally, I have always enjoyed these trips immensely. I highly recommend them to everyone. It’s a great way to make new friends, get to know members more closely, and a unique opportunity to form special bonds with members after spending a few days together. I can’t say enough about how much enjoyment I’ve had on these trips. There are lots of great events coming up this summer including the Chili Cook-Off and Hawaiian Luau. Make sure to sign up soon. These are sure to sell out fast. Also, don’t forget to submit you photos for Der Auspuff ’s Membership Gallery. Send your high resolution photos to derauspuff@gmail.com. I look forward to receiving you submissions. See you down the road!

The R.U.F. Report
R.U.F. Trip to Camarillo Bird Museum STORY BY JEANNE MCNAIR, PHOTOS BY NICK LIAKAS
I
t came as a surprise to many of the May R.U.F. attendees that there is a world-renowned institution known formally as the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology located right in Camarillo. The eighteen members who visited this fascinating location on May 15th learned that it is the repository of one of the largest bird egg collections in the world and is a valued source of scientific data utilized by bird researchers worldwide. In addition to the 225,000 egg sets (equal to more than 1,000,000 individual eggs), the museum houses over 20,000 nests and 56,000 bird specimens. Rene Corado, oologist and the collection manager for the Foundation, gave us an informative tour of the facility. Rene showed us many egg specimens including an elephant bird egg from Madagascar which was from an extinct bird who stood over 4 feet tall. The fossilized egg is larger than a soccer ball. We were shown numerous eggs, some of which were of many beautiful colors and textures. We also saw many nests from distant locations, including Africa. We learned that the foundation was instrumental in the research which identified DDT as the cause of the waning pelican population in California in the 1970’s. It helped determine that DDT stayed in the shells, weakening the structure and causing the eggs to break before the birds could hatch.
The 22,000 square foot facility is nicely laid out with numerous bird specimens, eggs and nests on display. We had ample time to tour the facility on our own after Rene concluded his remarks.
The Foundation gives tours to the public by reservation on the last Friday of each month. Following this interesting and educational tour, we drove a short distance to Los Arroyos restaurant for an enjoyable lunch together. There was even time enough for some of our group to visit the Camarillo outlet stores following lunch. =

Auctions America Special Offer To SBR Members ARTICLE BY NICK LIAKAS
S
anta Barbara Region member Matt Malamut and Auctions America are extending a very special invitation to our members to attend the August 1 –3 auction of classic, exotic and unique automobiles that will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel. Matt, the son of SBR members Mike and Barbara Malamut, joined Auctions America as a car specialist in the company’s Southern California office in July 2012. The company is a subsidiary of one of the largest collector car auction houses in the world, RM Auctions that is headquartered in Canada. RM’s business expanded so rapidly that the growth required the formation in 2010 of Auctions America to better serve consignors and collectors. The two entities can now serve the needs of sellers and buyers without limitation. Auctions America has acquired and developed a 235-acre “auction park at its headquarters in Auburn, Indiana. Matt completed his orientation and training at this site. Many consider the town to be the birthplace of auto auctions, and it was the manufacturing home of Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg automobiles in the first half of the last century. It is now home to a major museum showcasing said classics, and sponsors the annual Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival. Auctions America also has an office in Stuart, Florida and in addition to its Auburn and California sales, holds annual events in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
With Matt on board, Auctions America will be very focused on the Southern California market as both consider this area to be extremely important to the future growth of the business. Of course, Porsches will play a pivotal role in the plan. Further, Matt is quick to point out that vintage Porsches run in the DNA of the Malamut family. NBC Sports Network has entered into an agreement with Auctions America to broadcast its California and Auburn Fall auctions to over 80 million homes that subscribe to the cable network. Live transmittal of the August 2 and 3 California sale dates will formally launch the relationship. Early Porsche consignments slated for the California auction block include a 1956 356C Coupe offered at no reserve, along with a 1968 911 Soft Window Targa and a 2007 GT3 RS. The California offering also includes the Jim Carr Barn Find Collection of Napa Valley (42 cars with no reserve) and more than 100 much-in-demand classics from a Southern California private collection. SBR and Zone 8 members are offered a special and unique $10.00 discount for entry to the Burbank auction. Go to http://www.auctionsamerica.com/coupon.cfm and print the coupon designated for The Porsche Club of America, Santa Barbara Region. This inaugural presentation in SoCal by Auctions America is not to be missed. =

SBR’s Memorial Day Weekend Morro Bay & Central Coast Tour
F
STORY BY DOREEN PANKOW & TED LIGHTHIZER, EVENT PHOTOS BY DON EARL
riday, May 24th, dawned a sunny day with just a few clouds, and the forecast for our Memorial Day weekend trip looked great. In the early morning, 42 SBR members gathered in Santa Barbara to receive the last-minute updates to our itinerary from Ted Lighthizer and an overview of the 170 miles we would be driving that day. We were delighted to have Janice Herndon, our past Membership Chair, fly in from Denver to join us on this trip. At 9:15 a.m., 21 Porsches left the parking lot and began our two-hour drive to Morro Bay. We traveled north on the 101 to enjoy the coastal views and then headed northwest on the CA-1, stopping first at the Morro Bay Rock to re-group. Everyone was ready for lunch when we arrived at the Embarcadero Grill where we had a great view overlooking Morro Bay. After lunch, we drove back roads though the Morro Bay State Park and took Turri Rd. to Los Osos Valley Rd. before heading east to the Tolasa Winery for a tasting of five of their great wines on the outdoor patio winetasting area. Then everyone drove back via the same route to check in at the completely remodeled Inn at Morro Bay, our weekend
home. That evening, we enjoyed cocktails and a most delicious seafood dinner of fresh-caught halibut at “Windows on the Water” restaurant in Morro Bay where we had an excellent view of the Morro Bay Rock and a beautiful sunset too. Everyone enjoyed the exquisite cuisine and talked about how they were looking forward to another action-packed day on Saturday. On Saturday morning, Ted held an early driver’s meeting in the hotel parking lot. We drove out on Bay Rd, through Baywood-Los Osos and then onto Pecho Valley Rd. to the Bluff Trail inside the Montana de Oro State Park. The shoreline views were spectacular as we hiked a little over a mile along the ocean coastline and viewed a variety of bluff structures around every turn. Beautiful arrays of yellow and orange wildflowers were already in bloom along the path. There were so many photo opportunities that we had to prod the photographers to keep walking to the next point of interest. Following the hike, we returned to the CA-1 North and then took Old Coast Rd. south of Cayucos for nine miles of twisty Continued on page 16

roads before heading west on the CA-46 to Cambria. Everyone looked for a restaurant for lunch before embarking on their various activities. Some went to the Hearst Castle for a tour, others walked on the boardwalk along Moonstone Beach to observe the wildlife and the ocean, and others enjoyed exploring the various shops and wine-tasting rooms in Cambria. A small group drove up to Ragged Point for lunch and then stopped to see hundreds of elephant seals lying on the sand in various stages of molting their skins. The female seals were still waiting to give birth. Sunday morning, the group headed out of the State Park to Los Osos Valley Rd. and then turned onto Prefumo Canyon Rd. for a 13-mile, twisty drive up and over the top of the foothills where we met up with a small herd of Black Angus cattle walking and standing beside the road. Fortunately, no one hit any of the cattle, so we continued on and drove through a canopy of trees as we

dropped down into Avila Beach. We took a tram ride out to the Point San Luis Lighthouse, followed by a 45-minute tour of the lighthouse, which took fifteen years to restore and was just finished in 2010. This lighthouse has been guiding mariners safely to Port San Luis since 1890. We then sat down and enjoyed a delicious lunch with homemade salads and sandwiches and a delightful Amish cake. At the end of our tour, we returned to our cars via the tram, and everyone had a free afternoon to explore Avila Beach, Pismo Beach and the surrounding area before returning to Morro Bay. That evening, we enjoyed a delicious Italian dinner complete with chocolate lava cake in the Orchid Room at the Inn at Morro Bay, where everyone had fun sharing their experiences throughout the holiday weekend. =

Porsche Airbag Systems BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOS
Santa Barbara Region Tech Editor
O
f the vast array of sophisticated equipment onboard the modern Porsche, some of the most thorough engineering and precise manufacturing techniques are incorporated into a system that the automaker hopes its owner will never need. The airbag has been a mandatory feature of all automobiles sold in the U.S. for almost 20 years, but it is a little-known fact that Porsche was a pioneer in equipping its sports cars with dual airbags as far back as 1987. This article will provide a brief operational description of automotive airbag systems and their history, and highlight the evolution of airbag systems in Porsches, along with service and maintenance requirements. The notion of a passive restraint system to either supplement or replace safety belts has existed since the 1950s, when the first patents for inflatable airbag systems in automobiles were filed. GM introduced an optional steering-wheel-mounted airbag system in the mid-1970s that was designed to cushion an unbelted driver the event of a frontal impact, providing a precent for subsequent U.S. regulatory requirements. Mercedes-Benz was the first European automaker to offer an optional driver’s airbag system in 1981. Mercedes’ system was designed to supplement the threepoint seat belts, and was the precursor of the modern notion of the airbag as a supplemental restraint system (SRS). Porsche has long been an advocate for safety and occupant protection. The active safety of sharp handling and strong brakes have always been Porsche’s forte, but passive safety systems to minimize passenger injuries in a crash have long been at the forefront. Porsche was a pioneer of the collapsible, articulated steering column. Padded dashboards, three-point seat belts, and integrated headrests have been featured in the 911 almost from the beginning. Porsche greatly expanded its passive safety portfolio with the introduction of standard driver and front passenger
airbags in the 1987 944 Turbo. This was the first passenger car sold in the U.S. with dual airbags as standard equipment (they were optional on the non-Turbo 944 and 944S). The 928 S4 followed suit in 1990, as did the 964-series 911. Porsche’s early airbag system was typical of the era, and is similar in its basic layout to today’s systems. Two crash sensors located in the front wheel wells are wired to a central control unit, which is in turn wired to the driver’s airbag module in the steering wheel and the passenger airbag module in the dashboard above the glovebox. An airbag system warning lamp is also located in the instrument cluster.
comically inflated as the driver struggles to exit the vehicle. Airbags became commonly available in vehicles sold in the U.S. in the early to mid-1990s and were mandatory in all domestically sold cars and light trucks by 1997. When used in conjunction with three-point safety belts, airbag systems proved to dramatically reduce injury and fatality rates in frontal collisions. However, as the decade progressed, highly publicized reports of fatalities caused by airbag deployment were prevalent. As mentioned earlier, the original U.S. government standards stipulated that an airbag should be able to cushion a 5’9”, 200-lb male not wearing a seatbelt. The severe amount of force required to do so proved to be extremely dangerous to children and small adults in the front passenger (or driver’s)
The Porsche Panamera has an amazing array of airbags, offering protection all around. The early Porsche airbag system is designed to deploy the airbags only in the event of a frontal collision. If a sufficient frontal impact occurs, the electromechanical front sensors detect the sudden deceleration and close their respective circuits. If a third sensor located within the main control unit also closes its circuit, the control unit sends voltage to each airbag module. A special firing pin in each ignites a pyrotechnic charge that rapidly inflates each nylon airbag within 3040 milliseconds. Each airbag is specifically calibrated to cushion an average-sized adult passenger, and is vented to be able to deflate immediately after inflation, contrary to Hollywood portrayals of airbags remaining
seat, especially if the occupant was not wearing a seatbelt. Panicked officials began releasing public safety announcements advocating that children should only sit in the rear seats of vehicles equipped with passenger airbags, and reiterated the importance of seatbelt usage. Automobile manufacturers were given deadlines to develop next generation, two-stage airbag systems. As an early adopter of airbag systems, Porsche did not rest on its laurels. The 993 series 911, along with the first 986 Boxster and 996 911 models saw improved airbag units and more sophisticated central control units with complex internal sensors that eliminated the external crash sensors
of earlier models. Door mounted side impact airbags became standard for the 1998 model year, known as the Porsche Side Impact Protection system (POSIP). Sensors in each door rapidly deploy an airbag in the event of a side collision. The 2002 model year saw the introduction of automatic seatbelt pre-tensioners for each front seatbelt. Airbag deployment will trigger a pyrotechnic charge that operates a gas piston that automatically winds the seatbelt reel in, cinching the shoulder belt tight against each front passenger and limiting their forward movement in the event of a severe frontal impact. The Cayenne SUV of 2003 introduced the mandated two-stage next generation airbags in which deployment force is dependent upon the severity of the frontal impact. The airbags will deploy more gently and at a slower rate in the event of a lower speed impact or diagonal collision, which reduces the likelihood of front passenger injury. The return of external crash sensors at the front of the vehicle make this possible. The Cayenne also added large side curtain airbags for front and rear passenger head protection in a side impact, in addition to the existing POSIP door-mounted airbags in all four doors. The 987 Boxster and 997 911 also feature two-stage airbags, and the option of a key-controlled switch to turn off the passenger side airbag, allowing children and child seats to safely occupy the front passenger seat (the earlier 986 and 996 did offer an optional dealer installed child seat system that would also turn off the passenger airbag when the seat was in place). The 2010 Panamera sedan and the latest 2011 and newer Cayenne supplement Porsche’s latest airbag technology with the addition of driver and passenger knee airbags mounted in the lower dashboard section.
Airbag System Service The airbag system is one of the only onboard systems in Porsches that cannot be actively tested, short of crashing the vehicle. Therefore, a system test takes place each time the ignition is switched on and/or the engine is started. In any airbag equipped Porsche, the airbag warning light illuminates for approximately five seconds after each engine startup while the airbag control unit performs a system check; if any slight electrical fault is detected, the airbag
light will remain lit. Airbag wiring circuits are carefully designed and located, and use gold-plated terminal connectors for corrosion resistance. Any perceived wiring or electrical fault, no matter how small, will be detected during the routine system test and will trigger a fault. If any airbag module is disconnected while the battery is connected (this is NOT recommended for safety reasons) and the ignition is switched on, it will trigger an open-circuit fault code and the warning lamp will remain illuminated. To display fault codes, Porsche’s earliest airbag systems require a rudimentary shop-made electrical wire and switch assembly that belies the complexity of the airbag system itself. The device connects between the airbag control unit and a ground point and displays fault codes via flashing the airbag warning light in specific sequences to denote different fault codes. For the 1991 model year, airbag system faults became diagnosable using the Porsche System Tester scan tool, which ameliorated the diagnostic process. The newer generation airbag systems, with their increased amount of sensors, wiring, and airbag modules are diagnosable by the current PIWIS I and II scan tools. The correction of some system faults require component replacement, including seatbelt buckles, the clock spring (the special spirally wound and spring-loaded wiring unit in the steering wheel), or even a faulty control unit in some cases. Early Boxster and 996 models required a factory update that involved replacing the seatbelt buckles and adding an additional ground wire underneath each front seat if relevant fault codes were present. Control unit replacement is sometimes necessary in these models, and updated parts are available. It must be assumed that the airbags may not deploy during a collision if the airbag warning lamp is actively lit. Certain faults may still allow for the system to function, but a steadily lit airbag warning lamp should be taken seriously, and corrective action should be taken as soon as possible to ensure proper functionality of this vital safety system. For safety reasons, all Porsche airbag control units have an internal backup power supply to allow for deployment in the event of an interruption of the vehicle’s main power circuit. For this reason, the battery
must be disconnected, and a minimum of 20 minutes should pass to allow the system capacitors to discharge before any work on the airbag system is performed (this can be reduced to one minute for 993 and later systems). This includes steering wheel removal, so any work on or around airbag systems should only be performed by a trained professional. In the early days of airbag systems, it was often suggested that the entire system should be inspected and replaced at tenyear intervals if necessary. Twenty-five years later, such recommendations seem overly cautious given the longevity of modern vehicles and the tremendous cost involved in replacing all system components. However, age and moisture intrusion can take its toll on sensitive components, and they should be inspected during a major service or pre-purchase inspection. It should be noted that while Porsche has never stipulated any specific airbag component replacement intervals due to age, the first generation systems require replacement of both crash sensors, the control unit, and both airbag modules if deployment occurs. Beginning with the 993, the control unit is good for three deployments, but any relevant external front or side impact sensors should be replaced following a collision that resulted in airbag deployment, along with the respective airbag modules. Hopefully, none of the readers of this article will ever experience the sophistication of Porsche’s passive safety systems in operation. However, if the worst does occur, any modern Porsche owner should be thankful for Porsche’s long term dedication to robust build quality and both active and passive safety systems. =

Experience The Power Of Yum! STORY BY NOLA FORCE, PHOTO BY KAREN KAHN
T
he first ‘Power of Yum Cooking Experience’ took place at the home of member Sue Kinsling on Saturday morning, June 15, 2013 when fourteen Porsche Club women gathered in Somis, CA and cooked together, creating three healthy broths and a great salad for their lunch. Member Nola Force shared her knowledge of broth making, flavoring and other wisdoms. The participants agreed to write what the experience meant to them for this article, and Rosalee Merrick just about covered it all in her response, so it was agreed to ‘quote’ Rosalee followed by Joan Yabitsu and Ila Hamilton. Rosalee: “Your tips and techniques in preparing the broths were helpful. I learned about the FASS principle for balancing flavors: Fats, Acid (lemon), Sea Salt, and Sweetness. You expanded my knowledge on olive oil and how to know if you using a good quality one (besides the price!). I also learned the importance of using lemon...how it draws the goodness (marrow) out of the chicken bones when making chicken soup (especially the hip/thigh bones). And you explained the difference between the gelatin and the fat that forms on the chicken broth when you refrigerate it overnight. You clarified the lingering questions surrounding sea salt vs. kosher salt vs. table salt as well as Grade B maple syrup.
It was interesting tasting the broths plain, then adding salt, then lemon, and finally ginger to sample the varied favors. Currently, I’m on the hunt for Kombu and juniper berries! Please keep me on your email list...I would definitely be interested in attending similar classes of yours. You are a fountain of knowledge!” Joan Y: “Rosalee hit the nail on the head and covered important information quite thoroughly. My only comment is: What a delightful way to share a day with friends and reap a wealth of good tips for our good health. I’m sure that all gained so much with your many health tips, the introduction of new foods and condiments, and several books we might add to our library. Very new to me was the significance of our blood type in relation to the foods our body accepts. What a fun day and so rewarding.” And the final comment comes from participant Ila Hamilton, “It was a Blast!” =
