*Deep breath in, now breathe out*

Phew, we've made it...well, we have *almost* made it. It seems like this year has come and gone as quickly as the sun fades to twilight day after day. For me, it was a year of fresh starts and new successes, such as this magazine - my first one ever! Crazy, right? Like many, this time proves itself to be my favorite. Not solely because of the season, but because of the growth it demonstrates, the uprooting and replanting. Looking back on it, giggling with friends and wondering how in the world we got here, I have seen myself become someone I once dared to imagine. I often find myself ruminating on that little girl in remedial english class not too long ago, struggling to comprehend and formulate grammatically correct sentences, now constructing and editing a magazine. I discovered my storytelling in the triumph and tumult that grew me to where I am now. I hope she is proud! While building my first edition of The Circuit, I feel like I have come to know our Beach Chamber community and members on a more personal level. I have read your stories, seen your stories, and written your stories. It's like meeting family you never knew you had for the very first time, and realizing they have been the

NEWS FROM TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE & NSWC PANAMA CITY DIVISION

Building the Future:

Tyndall Academy By Zachary Nordheim Airman 1st Class 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

ducation serves as a cornerstone for societal progress,

navigate life's challenges. Yet, for military families,

school with a friend or peer

offering individuals the knowledge and skills to

this fundamental right often intertwines with unique and formidable obstacles.

Knowing these challenges, Tyndall Academy and Bay District Schools make it their mission to support military families in every capacity possible.

“The mission set that exists at Tyndall, whether it’s at the

wing or tenant units, is extraordinary,” said Mark McQueen, Bay District Schools superintendent. “Their commitment to

preserving the nation’s security is remarkable. I want to do

everything I can at Bay District Schools to support Team Tyndall.”

After serving in the U.S. Army for 36 years, McQueen

understands that service members are often called to fulfill their duty, which can span weeks, months or even years. This

often leaves their families to grapple with the emotional toll and practical disruptions of being a military dependent. With this in mind, Tyndall Academy provides multiple resources to aid in the transition of homes.

“One of the best programs we have here is our Anchored for Life Program which is sponsored by both Tyndall Air Force Base and our local Naval Support Activity in Panama City,” said Kara Mulkusky, Tyndall Academy principal. “The

program is about students introducing other new students

Team Tyndall also has a school

liaison program to help ease

the transition from one school

to another, ensuring military youth are given the opportunity to achieve their highest potential for academic success at any location. They provide crucial information about local school

systems, state requirements, extracurricular activities within the community and much more.

“I think the relationship between Bay District Schools and Tyndall is wonderful, and I am very appreciative of all the senior leadership and their commitment to family readiness

and education of their Airmen,” said McQueen. “We’re doing everything we can to help ensure that the entire resources of Bay District Schools go into supporting our military members.”

important to remember the men and women who dedicate their lives to military service confront a distinct set of trials that impact their families’ educational journeys.

“Being a former military spouse myself, I understand moving

military families,” said Mulkusky. “The beautiful thing about Tyndall is we have so many great resources and partnerships

that can assist people in making connections prior to even

TOUCH-A-TRUCK!

NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY PANAMA CITY HOSTS TOUCH-A-TRUCK EVENT, SHOWCASING NAVY CAREERS AND TECHNOLOGY By Michael Sparks | Director of Public Affairs, NSA PC PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Naval Support Activity Panama City (NSA Panama City) organized an engaging Touch-A-Truck event at Waller Elementary School, bringing the Navy closer to the local community

and offering children a firsthand experience with various vehicles

used in Navy operations. This expansion of the program, which originated at Patronis Elementary School last year, was made possible in partnership with Bay District Schools.

NSA Panama City’s Touch-A-Truck event, held on October 12, drew

the attention of students, and teachers in Bay County. Attendees were introduced to a diverse fleet of military vehicles, each representing an

essential aspect of Navy operations. From oil spill response boats to

fire engines and Bomb Disposal robots, children had the opportunity

to explore these vehicles and learn about the vital roles they play in Navy missions.

“The Touch-A-Truck program helps educate the community on careers within the Navy and at the same time show off the new technology

that the Navy uses,” said Cmdr. Michael Mosi, Commander, Naval Support Activity Panama City. Navy

servicemembers,

Engaging discussions on Navy careers and the latest technological

A collaborative effort between NSA Panama City and Bay District Schools

ensured that the Touch-A-Truck program reached beyond the naval base, benefiting students who may not have had access otherwise. This

partnership fostered strong community engagement and enhanced understanding of the Navy’s mission among students from various schools.

Commander Mosi reflected on the successful event, expressing

appreciation to Bay District Schools for their support and emphasis on the importance of community collaboration. He highlighted the value of

events like Touch-A-Truck in bridging the gap between the Navy and the community it serves.

The Touch-A-Truck program, with its focus on education, community

engagement, and technological innovation, aligns with the Navy’s

ongoing commitment to fostering young minds and preparing them for future endeavors. By providing immersive experiences, the Navy paves

the way for a brighter future, both for its operations and the talented individuals who may one day contribute to its critical missions.

Roast butternut squash at 400°F 40-45 minutes until squash is beginning to soften and a paring knife slips easily in and out of flesh. Allow squash to cool slightly. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat until a deep golden brown. Add maple syrup, cayenne if using, and orange zest and stir to combine. Remove from heat. Transfer squash to a cutting board and use a sharp knife to score squash crosswise, cutting into squash as deep as possible, but not cutting all the way through. Return squash to baking dish and drizzle with browned butter/ maple sauce. Arrange thyme sprigs on top of squash. Return squash to 400°F oven and roast an additional 40-45 minutes, basting occasionally with sauce until squash is tender. Allow butternut squash to cool slightly before topping with toasted pecans and serving warm. Enjoy!

Bacon-Wrapped Dates with Goat Cheese

INGREDIENTS • • • •

8 slices bacon (I find that thin bacon works better) 16 dates 4 ounces goat cheese Toothpicks

INSTRUCTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Slice the dates lengthwise on one side to create an opening. Remove the pit. Using a spoon, stuff a small amount of goat cheese into the cavity of each date and press the sides together to close. Cut the bacon slices in half. Wrap each date with a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick. Arrange evenly on a baking sheet with raised edges (otherwise grease will get everywhere) and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the dates and use the toothpick to turn each one so it’s laying on its side. Bake for another 5-8 minutes, until browned to your liking, and turn the dates to the other side and repeat. Remove from the oven, place on a paper towel lined plate, and let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

heartfelt chatter between the two. For some, it's a place that might resemble their grandmother’s living room, complete with the comforting feeling of home...and for many, it is home.

If you frequent the local coffee scene of Panama City Beach, there's a chance you may be familiar with its ark-like infrastructure, unique interior complete with a mish-mosh of furniture and wiry lighting, or the tantalizing smells of freshly baked goodies sure to satisfy anyone. You may also be familiar with the friendly locals who busy themselves with rhythmic taps of computer keys, the even friendlier staff serving in a capacity that goes beyond their 7-3 job description, or the

What patrons may not be familiar with is the ministry behind The Pour. Those who linger long enough learn that the coffee, pastry, or local artisan treasure they just purchased goes to fund The Ark, their transitional housing program and all the work it does within the community serving the homeless, the victim, and the financially strained. Many Ark residents, both individuals and families, are victims of domestic violence, struggling addicts working on their sobriety, or have come directly out of prison to a fast-paced new world around them. Whatever the hurdle may be, The Ark provides fortuity to mend what is broken through the cornerstone of its ministry—the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Differing from that of a cold and impersonal shelter, The Ark views itself as one big family made up of broken stories riddled with tragedy and loss, but ultimately seeking redemption and restoration through a faith based program encouraging community that in turn upholds accountability. This unique family-like dynamic that emanates has won over the most rejected hearts and seen victories for the broken since opening their doors in 2017.

This is what makes Thanksgiving such a special time around The Ark. Each year, The Ark opens its doors to the community, both to those in need of a warm meal and those who have the heart to cook and serve. It's a time of coming together as one big family to break bread and reflect on all the many blessings before and behind. The day will also provide opportunities for hot showers, clothing and toiletries, and visitors in need will have a chance to fill out applications and schedule interviews for housing. Last year, The Ark prepared and served over 100 meals. With generous donations from the community, we’d like to serve even more this year. Come early, let us show you around and if you’d like to call the Ark for details (850-2343084), we’d love to share our vision with you and let you know what to bring to the dinner table. Thanksgiving dinner will be served at noon on Thursday, November 23, in the main dining hall located behind The Pour at 12902 Front Beach Road. Come for full bellies, fellowship, and loving on those who most need it within our area.

COMMUNITY GIVEBACK | Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity: it all starts with a foundation By Angela Klopf & Aubrey Haskell

I

f you ask most people, “What does Habitat for Humanity do?” They’ll likely say, “build homes.” While this is true, Habitat’s mission is so

much bigger than that: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat

for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and

hope. Driving that mission is the vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat and its donors, volunteers, and sponsors

unite to help build stronger families, who in turn help build a stronger economy and healthier community!

Since its creation in 1990, Habitat for Humanity of Bay County, Florida has built over 100 homes. For more than thirty years, it’s played a vital role in safe, secure, and affordable housing in our area. These are homes

that also paid nearly $70,000 in property taxes just last year; which goes right back into the community that made them possible.

We all know how expensive it is to rent or to purchase a home, especially

with rising interest rates. Many individuals and families are paying as

much as 60 to 80 percent of their income on housing alone. Add other day-to-day expenses like food, clothing, gas, and healthcare and it’s

easy to see how some families greatly benefit from the work that Habitat for Humanity is doing.

While the foundation of a good home begins with love, we all need and deserve a safe, secure, and stable home life. Affordable housing

provides that along with a greater sense of belonging. It’s hard to feel like part of a community when you’re constantly struggling and lack safe

and secure living conditions. You can’t truly plant your roots anywhere and grow, like you can with the foundation of a home.

You might be surprised to learn that the individuals and families that partner with Habitat aren’t just given a new home. Habitat homeowners

Habitat For Humanity | Community GivebacK receive financial education, help build their houses, and pay an affordable mortgage. They’re required to put in 500 hours of “sweat equity”, helping

to build not only their home, but also helping to build their neighbors’ homes. Habitat partner families are given the opportunity to build

relationships with community volunteers helping on build sites, which

really helps them to gain a strong sense of community. Their affordable

mortgage payments are never more than 30% of their income with 0% interest. A sense of pride comes in knowing that each mortgage payment they make is being put towards building more affordable homes.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our work and make our mission

possible! Whether it’s helping once, a few hours each week, or on a regular

basis, Habitat has tons of opportunities! Volunteers serve on committees, build homes, help at the ReStores, and more. In addition to donating

time, Habitat accepts a variety of donations and sponsorships. From

monetary and building material donations, lunch and home sponsorships,

or even donations to our ReStore, Habitat relies on the generosity of the communities it serves. Thanks to these volunteers, donors, and sponsors, Habitat can provide families with affordable, decent, and safe homeownership.

This is Habitat for Humanity! This is building a foundation of success for

our community and for families for years to come! If you’re interested in learning more or getting involved, please visit bayhabitat.org or call (850) 784-9975.

Mark Sheldon

Mayor, Panama City Beach

A

s the holiday season approaches, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful season. This is the time of year for reflection and expressing gratitude. This leads me to consider some of the City’s 2023 accomplishments. We should all have a gratitude list. Number one, I am thankful for our great team here at the City. We have grown to nearly 400 employees who are the backbone of this community, providing essential services every day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their dedication and hard work throughout the year.

I am especially thankful for the expansion of much-needed healthcare on the beach. A second beach ER opened this year, and a full-scale hospital is being constructed, starting with a medical office building on State Road 79. This will be a state-of-the-art teaching facility that will allow us to keep our physicians at home once they are trained, thereby providing the best possible healthcare to our residents and visitors well into the future. Although inconvenient, I remain grateful for the many road construction projects within the City. I am committed to completing the Front Beach Road CRA, Alf Coleman, and Powell Adams; the 6-laning project being undertaken by FDOT on PCB Parkway is another reason to be grateful. As aggravating as road construction is, one day, these roads will be completed, congestion reduced and traffic flow improved. These projects are necessary to make our roads safer for everyone.

I appreciate the beautification strides we have made through installing colorful SeeLife sculptures around town, and the patriotism of the community, with more than 80 veteran banners placed along the CRA roads, saluting those who have served our country. We will be expanding this banner program soon, with a salute to our local high school graduates.

The beach has a lot going on.

I am thankful for all the new amenities coming to Frank Brown Park: a skate park, basketball courts, pickleball courts, Miracle League upgrades and tennis court improvements. And for the money we are able to put into public safety, with two new fire stations, a training tower, a K9 facility, and an east-end police substation all in the works.

So, I must say a big thank-you to my wife, Jessica, my daughter Sydney, and my son, John Robert. I am blessed to have you in my life. Let us remember this holiday season all that we have to be grateful for, and remember that as a community, we are stronger together.

But the thing I am most thankful for is my family. Without their love and support, it would be difficult to accomplish all that needs to be done and impossible to serve this City as your mayor. I am sure we all feel the same way about family.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Superintendent, Bay District Schools

A

s we approach the most wonderful time of the year, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support and generosity that our community shows during the Christmas holidays. This season is about coming together as a community to spread love and cheer to those in need. Your unwavering support makes it possible for us to do just that. One of the most heartwarming aspects of this holiday season is witnessing the amazing work being done by the students in all of our Bay District Schools. Through selfless acts of service, our students are dedicated to making a positive impact in our community. Throughout the years, we have seen students from all ages and backgrounds come together to support toy and food drives, showing immense compassion for their fellow community members. Our students have shown a remarkable commitment to ensuring that as many children as possible experience the magic of Christmas. Their enthusiasm for collecting toys and gifts for those less fortunate is truly commendable. The sight of our students, with bright smiles on their faces, packing boxes full of toys and goodies for children in need is a testament to the values we instill in them. We can never underestimate the life-changing possibilities of learning about empathy, kindness, and the importance of giving back. The food drives organized by our students have also been instrumental in providing nourishment and hope to countless families during the holiday season. Through their hard work and dedication, students gather essential food items to fill the pantries of those who might otherwise go without a warm meal during this special time of year.

Kim Bodine

To the students of Bay District Schools, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Your efforts remind us that the true spirit of Christmas lies in the act of giving and in the warmth of the community. You are the future leaders of Bay County, and your compassion and generosity give us hope for a brighter and more caring community. However, it’s not just our students who deserve our appreciation. I also want to thank the community members and stakeholders who support our Team of Teams. Your generosity, whether in the form of donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about our initiatives, has been the driving force behind our success in spreading Christmas cheer. As the Superintendent of Bay District Schools, I am humbled and proud to be part of a community that values kindness, compassion, and unity. Together, we achieve remarkable feats during the Christmas holidays, and I have no doubt that our collective spirit will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve. As we prepare to celebrate this magical season, let us remember the true meaning of Christmas and let us celebrate with love, compassion, dedication and a determination to help each other. I am so grateful to our remarkable students for their selfless efforts and to our community for its unwavering support. Together, we are spreading Christmas cheer to as many people as possible in Bay County, making this holiday season a truly special and memorable one.
