What have you done so far this year that has challenged who you are and who you want to be by the time 2025 rolls around? My mid-year evaluation is looking pretty dang good.
Just like the lot of us, summer is my busiest time of the year and this summer in particular I have had a massive boom in my own personal business as well as my job here at the Chamber! Huge things are happening and show no signs of slowing down.
But with all that comes some ground rules I have had to lay down for myself in order to avoid burn out:
1. No business on weekends - this time is for my family and friends. Its the chance for me to recoup, catch some sun, spend the night out, and play as hard as I want to while allowing me to come back into the office on Monday with a full heart and clear head.
2. Morning Hour - I get an hour each morning after the gym to spend how I like before I need to get ready for the day. Some days I walk, barista at the coffee shop, read, or simply take in the quiet before the chaos. This hour has RADICALLY changed my life and is my favorite part of each day.
3. Lunch Breaks - TAKE THEM! If your job allows you one, get out of the office and enjoy a moment to yourself. This can be the difference that makes for a good night ahead.
We are six months out from the end of the year! Choose how you want to spend them, but I hope they provide you with the resolutions you sought at the beginning :)
Cheers!!

Supporting Panama City Beach Chamber members during the summer months can make a significant impact on our local economy and community. As our season continues to grow well beyond summer, visitors play a pivotal role in job creation, help pay the half-cent sales tax that goes towards roads and bridges that we all use, largely funds our City’s operating budget, and also helps attract new businesses and developments to our area.
We are all thankful to the millions of people that visit our beautiful destination every year! A special thank you and congratulations to NW Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) as they just celebrated their 14th Anniversary on May 23rd. ECP continues to hit record numbers and is expanding to keep up with growing passenger travel. This nearly $15 million expansion includes several projects from additional parking, the North Terminal Concourse buildout, and more baggage handling capability.
Tourism is still our number one industry but we also have a huge economic impact from our military. Bay County is home to both NSA Panama City and Tyndall Air Force Base. On Friday, June 7, 2024 Tyndall Air Force Base hosted an induction ceremony for their 2024-2026 Honorary Commander program for several community leaders. This amazing opportunity to meet the brave men and women at Tyndall AFB during a historic rebuild and welcoming of new F-35s is truly an honor. I feel very blessed and privileged to be part of this program. A huge thank you to Col. Watkins and Maj. Artman for this once in a lifetime experience.
To a Happy & Safe Summer,
Kristopher McLane President/CEO
Lastly, safety should be a top priority for both residents and visitors when enjoying our beautiful beaches. Panama City Beach has a color-coded beach flag system to alert the public of current water conditions. Everyone please obey the flag system because it can help save your life or you could be arrested for ignoring these warnings!

The U.S. Air Force 79th Fighter and Fighter Generation Squadron ‘Tigers’ took part in Checkered Flag 24-2 and the Weapons System Evaluation Program (WSEP) at Tyndall Air Force Base from May 9-22, 2024. These exercises aimed to enhance air combat readiness alongside 5th generation aircraft and validate weapons systems and tactics in realistic, large-scale training scenarios.
Checkered Flag is a large force exercise involving over 60 aircraft from across the joint branches, designed to prepare units for immediate response force missions by improving air combat tactics, aerial refueling operations and overall mission effectiveness. Concurrently, WSEP provides aircrew with live-fire training and evaluates weapons systems and tactics in simulated combat scenarios. The Tigers’ participation aimed to enhance Airman confidence in live-fire air-to-air operations while integrating 4th and 5th generation fighter aircraft in a largescale training environment. 79th ‘Tigers’ Take on Checkered Flag 24-2, WSEP
By Senior Airman Steven Cardo 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
“The 79th participates by bringing the 4th generation [fighter aircraft] aspect into the exercise… alongside joint partner groups and other Air Force units,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Joshua Epley, 79th Fighter Squadron pilot. “Usually at Shaw we practice amongst ourselves, F-16 versus F-16. This prepares us for a combat environment where multiple [airframes] can be brought together… We’ve had great experiences from how we operate at a different installation and how we integrate with other aircraft.”
WSEP provides ground crews and pilots with air-to-air missile and 20 mm gun live-fire training, focusing on evaluating and validating weapons systems and tactics in simulated combat scenarios. The exercise supplies crucial data to system engineers, allowing them to improve aircraft and munition guidance systems for the Department of Defense.
“We fire live missiles for two reasons: to gather data on how the weapons systems will actually work and to give our pilots and loaders an opportunity to work with live munitions, some for the first time in their careers,” said Tech. Sgt. Justin Talbert, 79th FGS weapons expeditor. “Day to day, we train with [combat arms training and maintenance] missiles which have all the same technology, but don’t have the warhead. This exercise gives our people the opportunity to handle the real thing and provides much more realistic training.”
Planning for the exercises began in early February and required coordination from multiple units within the 20th Fighter Wing to ensure successful deployment.
“Ensuring our cargo, personnel and aircraft arrived on time involved crucial assistance from the 20th Logistic Readiness Squadron and various [unit deployment managers],” said Master Sgt. Zachary Snook, 79th FGS production superintendent. “Pulling off a successful Checkered Flag/ WSEP [temporary duty] couldn’t have been done without… the 79th operations and maintenance project officers. Their leadership and coordination were instrumental in ensuring the smooth execution of all logistics and operations.”
Lt. Col. Alexander Prevendar, 79th FS commander, praised the efforts and morale of the squadron. “When the [79th Fighter and Fighter Generation Squadrons] deploy, we go as a mission generation force element. Having the opportunity to integrate here and get to know everyone on a personal level has been absolutely phenomenal,” said Prevendar. “Morale is super high… everyone wants to get the job done and be the best that they can be. I couldn’t be more proud of everyone for furthering ‘Tiger Nation.’ Tiger Tiger!”
The 79th Fighter and Fighter Generation Squadron ‘Tigers’ generated 111 sorties and flew over 230 hours to integrate 4th and 5th generation fighter aircraft and test their ability to provide and sustain enemy anti-air suppression in a large-scale, realistic training environment. The units remain steadfast in seeking high-end, advanced training opportunities to enhance mobility, deployment, & employment capabilities to ensure the delivery of decisive combat airpower anytime, anywhere.

Summertime brings some of the biggest and best sports fishing around. This year proved to be nothing short of that for the revamped Bay Point Billfish Open presented by Visit Panama City Beach, hosted by the beautiful Point South Marina-Bay Point where more than 80 teams converged to take to the open waters of the Gulf Coast, July 24th – July 30th, 2024.
In early 2022, four Bay County locals- John Warren, Jay Quave, George Roberts, and WJHG Newschannel 7 Sports Director Scott Rossman came together to bring back the big-time blue marlin sportfishing tournament to the area. The hope was to mimic and then build upon the great success of the initial tournament, the Bay Point Invitational, which was among the crown jewels of the sportfishing season along the Gulf Coast from the early 1980s to 2012, to turn it into the area’s “newest” addition to the event scene.
Getting that ball rolling was no easy feat. After a year or so of meeting and planning, everything began to come together, piece by meticulous piece. Come late June 2023, the first Bay Point Billfish Open took place at Point South Marina-Bay Point.
Boasting 80 teams from up and down the Gulf Coast, anglers signed up and showed out to compete alongside the elite of sports fishing. Putting on a show for all to see, teams took to the Gulf of Mexico in search of the prize-winning big blue, the largest tuna, wahoo, and dolphin, knowing there was a total of $1.4 million in tournament prize money up for grabs.
In total, this year’s tournament saw 48 blue marlins, 16 white marlins, 12 sailfishes, 16 tunas, 17 wahoos, and 10 dolphins.
While teams began arriving the Sunday of tournament week and into the next few days, the event officially kicked off on Wednesday with registration, a Captain’s meeting, dinner for the competitors, and an in-the-water boat show of sorts. The tournament also featured three
nights of live music on the big stage, with a special guest appearance from country music star Randy Houser, entertaining captains, crews, anglers, and spectators alike!
Despite the tumultuous weather conditions, the Thursday of tournament week saw the fleet depart in a parade-like fashion. Boats lined up in the Point South Marina and followed out a Viking 68 provided by Galati Yacht Sales, moving through the St. Andrews Pass and into the Gulf, turning west to show themselves to locals and tourists along the beaches. Following the lead of Tournament Director Bert Merritt, the boats turned south and were given the go to head out towards whatever fishing ground in the Gulf they had chosen.
Fishing took place Thursday through the weekend, as is common in most events of the sort, with the vast majority of the fleet weighing in their product on Saturday, delivering quite a show.
Led by angler Reese Johnson, the Destin based crew of Wynsong hauled in a blue marlin that tipped the scale at a whopping 567.4lbs, walking away with first place in the blue marlin division and a payout
of $289,320. Team Jolene boated a 514.6lbs blue taking second place, and team Done Pickin nabbed third with 463.3lbs.
In addition to the blue marlins boated and released, the second Bay Point Billfish Open saw several large tuna, wahoo, and dolphin weighed in. The heaviest tuna came from angler Jaselyn Berthelot aboard Rising Sons, weighing in at 181.6lbs. The Rising Sons crew walked away with a check for $128,025. The second and third-place tunas weighed in at 162.9lbs and 158.9lbs respectively.
In the Wahoo division, it was angler Strother Allen aboard Hey Jack leading the way with an 69.9lbs fish that netted that team a check of $28,800.
And in the Dolphin division, Breathe Easy turned in the biggest fish caught by angler Craig Smith weighing in at 41.8lbs. Craig and his team hauled in $45,000 for their catch.
Beyond just the great fishing teams, a spectacular fleet of big-time sportfishing yachts, and the big fish, the event turned out to be a big success in other ways as well. Huge crowds took in four nights of great live music, terrific food and beverages, and a fantastic party atmosphere. Many used to call the Bay Point Invitational the social event of the summer. And that’s what the Bay Point Billfish Open seems to be in line to become once again.

Our namesake, Swampy Jack is a private, almost reclusive man, a world traveler, always on the go and seeking adventures. His adventure stories, which can seem fantastical, provide a curious theming to the park.
Quirky would certainly apply to Skunky, the stinky seven-foottall swamp ape and park mascot. Maybe you’ve spotted him somewhere up and down the beach mingling with the crowds or cruising in his custom-wrapped convertible. Skunky is outgoing and gregarious, and quite the opposite of his shy, bigfoot cousins. If you haven’t yet seen him in person, you can find him furiously posting on social media.
Then there’s the whole Mr. Creepies insinuation with the park’s annual haunt event, which is just downright weird. The recently discovered Indian trail through the park’s wetlands and the strange appearance of Mr. Creepies and his troupe are too closely
correlated to be coincidental. There’s something more afoot and it’s all very peculiar.
And many ask, “What the heck is WONGO?”
Hidden is used to describe the park because it is surrounded on three sides by thick underbrush and tall trees. Ponds, on either side of the park, are connected by a creek and thickly wooded wetlands cutting diagonally through the park, effectively encircling and hiding most of its attractions. Even though Swampy Jack’s abuts Pier Park, it is mostly unseen. Or, maybe Swampy Jack’s remains hidden from the locals. Since this is their home, they don’t use Trip Advisor, having yet to discover the 5-star rated, Traveler’s Choice award-winning park.
The attractions that can be seen from the entrance on Powell Adams Drive are the appropriately named Screamin’ Swing, with its 55’ long arms providing a 210-degree swing; and the laughterproducing Spin Coaster, which blends a figure 8 track with tilt-awhirl cart motion. The large clown mouth exit for the seasonal haunt event is obvious beside the seating area for Swampy Jack’s
Cantina. The Cantina offers a variety of meals, snacks, treats, and drinks, including beer and wine. Despite the screams, laughter, and indulgences of the entrance side, the real energy is on the hidden side, found only after crossing the wetlands bridge.
A large sign, colorfully flashing WONGO, draws you to the long wooden bridge spanning the width of the wetlands, primitive drums coupled with wild animal sounds can be heard out in the woods, over the wetlands, and exotic music pulls you to the far side. Once across you have the feeling of being elsewhere; the isolation and surrounding foliage create a place unto itself.
To the right, the twenty-five-foot-tall Yacuma serpent with her huge fangs, and her coils wrapping around a Wipe Out attraction, is reminiscent of the old Miracle Strip Amusement Park’s Dante’s Inferno—at least Swampy Jack sees the connection. To the left is The Ruins of Angkor Wat mini-golf course. Thick, lush landscaping, koi ponds, fountains, waterfalls, and temple ruins make way for a relaxing passage.
Next up on the right, is the aptly named Blue Hole, a funky, underwater-themed bumper car experience. Spinning bumper cars with zero-turn-radius steering provide plenty of bumps, and an accurately targeted thump to another car can send it spinning in circles. Further on to the right is the Midway building. Ring Toss and Goblet Toss games provide plenty of chances to win a variety of stuffed animal prizes ranging from small to extra-large. The retail shop offers snacks, drinks, gift items, and a variety of Swampy Jack’s themed t-shirts.
On the left is the Marrakesh Road Rally with its technical track and electric go-karts, which provide two race options. The Thundervolt Race is a traditional race but with the addition of four Turbo Boosts per race giving the drivers an extra 3 mph for 15 seconds. In the Power-Up Race, cutting-edge interactive track technology allows for a Mario-Kart type of experience. Drive across the orange coins
on the track to gain ½ mph each. Drive across the green squares and pick up Turbo Boosts, Turtle Modes or Hot Zones which can be used to slow down other karts on the track, or Shields which prevent others from slowing your kart.
Next is The Kraken tower swing, a high-flying favorite. This ride hoists passengers high into the air while spinning round and round. Off to the right, a touch of the quirky old Florida can be found with a thirtyfoot-tall Swamp Ape. This dark ride is reminiscent of the Miracle Strip Amusement Park’s indoor scrambler ride, the Abominable Snowman, which a young Jack rode in the 70’s. Much later, Jack’s encounter with the swamp ape in the Everglades originated his idea to bring back his updated version of the old favorite. An even older classic sits across from the Swamp Ape. The 2024 addition to the park is a 1940s Herschell Spillman Carousel. With it being both the newest and the oldest attraction to the park, it fits riders from oldest to youngest.
At the far end of the park, out past the Swamp Ape exit, is the entrance to the Lusus Naturae SKULK Trail. This old Indian trail runs through the wetlands and is the first part of Swampy Jack’s annual haunt event. Seasonal events are a growing part of the Swampy Jack experience, and Mr. Creepies Demented Labyrinth, a five-weekend haunt event starting in late September and ending Halloween night, is quickly becoming the-must-attend-event for those looking to get their fright on. The second half of this two-haunts-in-one features Mr. Creepies Big Tent Labyrinth. This next season’s event should take 45 minutes to an hour to make it through—if you do make it through, you will exit via Mr. Creepie’s clown mouth beside the Cantina.
If you haven’t yet discovered Swampy Jack’s, come explore this quirky, hidden gem. Admission into the park is free, and for the best deals be sure to ask for the Locals Card.

Whether you’re going on vacation or staying at home this summer, there are some safety tips to keep in mind if you’re pregnant. To help protect yourself and your unborn baby, learn about beating the heat, avoiding bug bites, traveling by air and getting a healthy summer glow.
It can be tough for anyone to stay cool in the sizzling summer heat. But it’s especially important to avoid getting too hot if you’re pregnant. When your body temperature goes above 102.2°F (39°C) for long periods, there’s a risk of pregnancy problems like birth defects. Later in pregnancy, a high body temperature can lead to things like dehydration and heat illness.
This summer, try to:
• Take a dip in a cool pool instead of a hot tub or sauna.
• Skip lying in the sun for a tan or using tanning booths.
• Listen to your body’s cues that you may be getting too warm. If you have a dry mouth, aren’t urinating regularly or feel dizzy, go inside and drink fluids, like water.
If you’ll be spending time outside this season, bugs will likely be there, too. Mosquitoes can carry serious viruses, so how can you protect yourself and your child? Be mindful of how you try to keep insects away.
Some pesticides — substances that kill or repel any pest — can harm a growing baby. But many insect repellents — substances that keep bugs away but don’t kill them — are safe to use during pregnancy. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends using a repellent with one of these active ingredients:
• DEET
• picaridin
• IR3535
• oil of lemon eucalyptus
• para-menthane-diol
Don’t use more repellant than you need and wash it off when you get indoors.
You can also help prevent bug bites by covering up when you’re outside. Wearing long sleeves and pants reduces the amount of exposed skin. Also try staying inside at
dusk and dawn. This is when insects bite most often.
Do your summer plans include flying somewhere? There are some limits if you’re pregnant. When you’re healthy, it’s usually safe to fly up to 4 weeks before your due date. After that, it’s best not to travel far in case you deliver.
Your doctor may want you to stay close to home if you or your unborn baby has a medical condition. For example, it’s not a good idea to travel by air if you have high blood pressure or blood clots, or have had a miscarriage, premature labor, an ectopic pregnancy or other prenatal problems.
Be sure to discuss your vacation plans with your doctor. If you get the OK to pack your bags, keep these air travel tips in mind:
• Avoid flying to areas with high altitudes or disease outbreaks, or where some infections (like Zika or malaria) are common.
• Look at the airline’s policy about flying during pregnancy. Most airlines will let you to fly up until week 37. Some might ask for a document from your doctor with information about the due date and confirming that you’re OK to travel.
• Check your health insurance to make sure it covers pregnancy and newborn health issues while abroad (if you’re going to another country). If it doesn’t, consider getting travel health insurance.
• Move your lower legs often on the flight and try to get out of your seat, especially on long trips. This keeps blood flowing and helps prevent clots. Wearing support stockings can also help avoid clotting in your legs.
• Keep your seatbelt on when you’re seated. If the flight gets bumpy, you won’t be jostled as much.
Soaking up the sun isn’t advised because of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, but what about using self-tanners for a summer glow? There’s no proof that they can harm an unborn baby, there are very few studies available on the effect of self-tanners during pregnancy.
Airbrush or spray-on tans should be avoided while pregnant. Spray tans may have unknown health risks because you can breathe in the spray, or the tanner may end up on your lips or eye area. Instead, try using
a bronzer (a cosmetic product that gives the look of a tan until it’s washed off).
It’s a good idea to speak with your doctor about your summer plans. You can get helpful advice on how to keep you and your unborn baby healthy and find ways to feel more comfortable.

As we celebrate a full year in the bridal industry, our family and team are incredibly excited about the movement and growth we are experiencing in Bay County. For a whole year, Baytowne Bridal has been able to serve brides from all across the country. When we opened our doors in June of 2023, we could have only dreamed of our reach. Our hearts are filled with immense amounts of joy that right in our four walls in Downtown Panama City, we are celebrating women well and big. Wedding seasons can bring on stress and discouragement, and we are bringing celebrations and cheers! Each bride that enters our little blue door has a unique story to share. Through our conversations with each sweet woman, we are able to hear and learn about the many different ways one chooses to celebrate a monumental event, such as a marriage.
Our staff and owners have been passionate about individuality and personality since day one and it seems that our brides are wanting that, too! One of our favorite trends that embodies this is that many brides are having their bridesmaids choose dresses in which they feel their best! & the pictures exude joy! We are also loving the bold floral choices, lately. While we will never stop loving a bright hydrangea or a pink rose, the bursts of color is a fun refresh! Summer is an exciting season for wedding planning because there is inspiration all over.
From the array of festive umbrellas at the beach and the fresh catch of the day for lunch, we love that our coastal town brings a breath of fresh air to everyone. During the summer season, you can find us enjoying the boat and Shell Island, or one of the many splash pads with the kids. It is a blessing to be living this season in this special space.
As we look forward to year two, we are prayerful and hopeful that every bride we meet feels celebrated; we hope that she is inspired. We hope we can continue to invest in our community. And we are excited about the growth and passion surrounding our area!

Grand Slam Sports Tournaments is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2024! From our humble beginning in August of 2004 with a thirtyteam tournament in Columbus, Georgia to now having over three thousand teams register to play Grand Slam across twenty-five-plus states in 2024……this little grassroots business has come a long way!
After having sixty teams play in the first four-day World Series tournament hosted at Frank Brown Park back in 2004, Grand Slam has grown exponentially and will now host over four hundred teams in four full weeks of youth travel baseball World Series events in Panama City Beach, Florida this summer for its 20th consecutive year! Tournaments will be hosted at Frank Brown Park and The Publix Sports Complex.
On an annual basis, Grand Slam Sports generates over $30 million dollars in economic impact according to the PCB Tourism & Development Council. It takes a village and Grand Slam is no stranger to that, paying their thanks to the city and all the local businesses and individuals who have helped them grow. Without the support of the community, there is no way the business would have become as successful as it has been in the last two decades.
Grand Slam Sports has been recognized by Sports & Events magazine as a Champion of Economic Impact award winner for the past seven consecutive years. The magazine also tabbed owner, Larry Thompson Jr., as the Best Live or Virtual Sporting Event Planner for 2023 along with Connect Sports Event Planner of the Year for 2021. In addition to these National awards, Thompson and Grand Slam Sports was recognized as the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award Winner in 2018 and in 2021 the Community Impact Award winner.
The travel baseball industry has certainly grown and changed a lot over these past twenty years but Grand Slam was founded on the basis of providing a quality youth travel baseball experience for the kids, and always striving to put them first. Grand Slam Sports continues to follow this model of success to this day! “Twenty years down and hopefully many more to come,” says Thompson!

Thank you for the opportunity—as Panama City Beach’s newly-elected Mayor—to update you on some of the additions and improvements underway in our beautiful city.
A new skate park and pickleball courts, as well as resurfaced basketball courts, are coming to Frank Brown Park. Those attractions were chosen based on input from our residents.
Under construction on the west end of our city is McGuire’s Irish Pub. If you’ve never visited their restaurants in Destin and Pensacola, you’re in for a delicious surprise.
Driving along Back Beach Road towards Pier Park, it’s hard to miss the construction of Dolly Parton’s Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, a 60,000 square foot arena with more than a thousand seats. The $60 million project should be opened next year. They put on quite a show.
Nearby, Topgolf is building a $26 million facility that is a covered driving range and so much more, including a full-service restaurant with cocktails and other entertainment. It’s the one place where you can legally drink and drive. This is a wonderful attraction that I’m sure many here will visit regularly.
The new hospital is getting close to opening some facilities in a few months. This will be a wonderful enhancement to the medical landscape of the area.
Of course, you must drive to these new facilities and attractions, and, as I’m sure you know, we’re currently widening and upgrading our roads. The Florida DOT is making good progress adding lanes along Back Beach Road.
The Front Beach Road Segment 3 encompasses South Arnold Road and approximately 1.2 miles of Front Beach Road east of the roundabout to the Lullwater Lake area. After a bit of a rocky start, this project is progressing nicely and is approximately 82% complete with a substantial completion date anticipated in early 2025.
As of the end of April 2024, the Alf Coleman Road project was approximately 65% complete. The main goals of this project are to alleviate roadway flooding and to provide greater pedestrian safety along this corridor. The project is on track to be substantially complete in July 2024.
There is a lot of construction. The city is working diligently to finish its projects on time and ensure we have infrastructure that works for everyone, our neighbors, our businesses, and our visitors. Everyone in our wonderful city thanks you for the opportunity to work with you and to serve you.
The summer months bring droves of tourists – critical to our local economy – but they also bring traffic snarls and headaches, particularly along the Panama City Beach Parkway, or U.S. 98. Thankfully, the state of Florida last September began work on a broad project to widen “Back Beach Road” to six lanes all the way from the Hathaway Bridge west to State Road 79. Additionally, the state is also in the study phase of a project to widen U.S. 98 from State Road 79 west to the Bay/Walton County line.
The first two segments of the Back Beach Road project, estimated to cost $110 million, widens 4.8 miles of U.S. 98 from Mandy Lane east to Richard Jackson Boulevard. Most of the work is being done at night and is expected to be completed in Winter 2027. The third section of the widening project, from Richard Jackson east to the Hathaway Bridge begins in 2026. Once it is all completed, the roadway will feature stormwater enhancements, bike
lanes, continuous sidewalks and signalization upgrades, with new signals at Mandy Lane and Gulf Boulevard. The state of Florida recognized that the capacity issues along that roadway are so significant that they moved the project ahead by several years to address the issues.
Another project aimed at alleviating traffic on the beach is the third phase of the Philip Griffitts Sr. Parkway, which is currently in a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) and design study. Bay County received a $2 million grant from the Florida Department of Transportation as well as a $2 million appropriation from the Florida Legislature for the PD&E part of the effort, expected to take about 2.5 more years to complete before construction can begin.
The 5.1-mile section of the roadway would traverse from Clara Avenue east to Chip Seal Parkway and serve the communities of Breakfast Point and people living in the area of North Clara and Moylan Road.

The funding will support the development of a simulation center on the GCSC Panama City Campus, featuring state-of-the-art technology and virtual reality training, encouraging hands-on skills, critical thinking, and interprofessional collaboration.
There is nothing better than when summertime officially sets in. Beautiful days spent on the beach, sunsets painting the sky pink and orange, and fresh-caught seafood for dinner with the whole family. Families prioritize making memories and spending quality time together during the summer, and this has certainly reigned true in Panama City Beach.
Successful events play a crucial role in attracting visitors to Panama City Beach,
The new facility will increase enrollment in Gulf Coast’s nursing, health sciences, and public safety divisions, while increasing capacity to train various programs such as associate degree RNs, RN-BSN, respiratory care, RN – First Assistant, and EMT/paramedic students. Summer is here, and locals love to live, work, and play where others from around the world come to vacation. The sunshine and longer days of summer are often offset by the hustle that goes along with working. We see some of the highest rates of employment in the summer season, thanks to our booming leisure and hospitality sector. But the summer sizzle can easily devolve into simmering stress and burnout with our minds ruminating on work.
Summer is an ideal time to recharge and establish a work-life balance that can prevent burnout and disengagement from one’s job. This practice shouldn’t be seasonal, however. Burnout is characterized by excessive or prolonged stress that causes emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. A Gallup 2023 State of the Global Workplace Report uncovered data that daily worker stress remains at a historic high with 52% of U.S. workers experiencing this feeling, which can also present as physical tension.
To function optimally and avoid burnout, it is important to recharge and manage stress as a continuous commitment. The process will improve job satisfaction, support focus and productivity, enhance creativity, and reduce absenteeism and presenteeism.
What employees can do to avoid burnout:
• Fully disconnect – use your accrued leave and disconnect from technology during non-working hours. Dig into ways to stop thinking about work off the clock, which is unproductive.
• Identify the stress factors to develop coping strategies and note how if affects you.
• Practice self-care for your physical, mental, and emotional needs. Exercise, nutrition, quality sleep, physical activity, mindfulness, connecting with nature, and discovering hobbies are key to recharging.
• Connect with supportive loved ones and social networks, which is essential for one’s mental and emotional well-being and strengthens family bonds.
• Find meaning in what you do professionally and personally, which can help you feel fulfilled and motivated.
• Set boundaries that communicate your needs and limits, asking for help when needed, and limit exposure to negative people or situations.
• Ask for feedback and recognition, which are important for professional growth and satisfaction, helping you recognize your value and impact.
• Learn new skills to increase your confidence through improved competency and knowledge.
• Practice effective time management by prioritizing tasks and setting realistic deadlines.
Employers play a key role in supporting work-life balance and the recharge process. They should recognize that addressing wellbeing creates a thriving workforce that supports productivity and economic growth.
The Gallup report showed that 47% of the U.S. employees are watching for opportunities or actively seeking a new job. The emerging phenomenon of “quiet quitting” is a marker of disengagement. This is characterized by an employee putting forth minimum effort and becoming psychologically disconnected from the employer, according to Gallup. A staggering 52% of U.S. employees are quiet quitting, based on the report, and 17% are “loud quitting,” taking action to oppose the organization, often due to broken trust between the employer and employee.
A work-life balance is necessary, with the workplace providing more engagement, boosting morale, and demonstrating a supportive culture.
• Ensure an employee’s workload allows for taking time off to make recharging and resetting possible. Then see that they take their accrued leave.
• Allow employees to disconnect by not communicating during off time and be clear that they know they’re not expected to do any work while off.
• Respect the employee’s boundaries, setting clear workhours expectations and policies, even putting into writing the commitment.
• Recognize and acknowledge signs of burnout in employees and show concern for well-being to help them feel understood. Then implement support to help. Check in regularly to provide support and stave off discontent.
• Recognize employee’s positive contributions and impact on the business to show they make a difference. This can recharge one’s spirit as they recognize that their work is meaningful.
• Establish personal connections among employees to counter any isolation, share challenges, and provide inspiration and solutions. Ensure they understand they belong.
• Provide mental health resources that offer confidential counseling and support from an experienced therapist or coach.
• Finally, lead by example. Leaders who recharge and prioritize their well-being set a positive tone for the entire company.
Preventing burnout is a continuous commitment from both employers and employees. Companies can create a thriving and productive workforce by creating a culture that prioritizes well-being, fueled by a sense of support and purpose.

As we stand on the cusp of the 2024-2025 school year, I am filled with enthusiasm and a renewed sense of purpose as we embark on a mission to put the “A” back in Bay District Schools. Our vision for this year centers around transforming our district into a beacon of excellence, where every aspect of our educational ecosystem contributes to making BDS truly amazing.
The “A” in Bay represents both the core pillars of our commitment and our determination to move our district into a top-ten ranking in the state of Florida. By focusing on Accountability, Attendance, Academic Achievement, the Arts, and Athletics, we believe we can accomplish that goal.
Accountability is at the forefront of our efforts. We believe in holding ourselves to the highest standards, ensuring that every member of the BDS community is committed to excellence. This means transparent communication, rigorous performance evaluations, and a relentless pursuit of improvement in every facet of our operations. By fostering a culture of accountability, we are building a foundation of trust and integrity that will support our students’ success.
Attendance is another critical component. Regular attendance is vital for student achievement, and we are implementing new strategies to promote and track attendance more effectively. We understand that students have to be present to have the opportunity for academic success, and we are committed to ensuring that our students are engaged and supported every day they are in school.
Academic Achievement remains our primary focus. We are dedicated to providing high-quality education that challenges and inspires our students. We aim to raise the bar for academic performance across the district through innovative teaching methods, enhanced curriculum, and a supportive learning environment. Our goal is to equip all students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their future endeavors.
The Arts play a vital role in fostering creativity and expression among our students. We are expanding our arts programs to ensure that all students have the opportunity to explore their creative potential. From visual arts to music and drama, we believe that a robust arts education enriches the overall learning experience and helps develop well-rounded individuals.
Athletics also contribute significantly to student development. Our athletic programs teach teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. We are committed to providing our student-athletes with the resources and support they need to excel both on and off the field. Through a strong emphasis on physical education and sports, we promote a healthy, active lifestyle that benefits our students in countless ways.
The amazing BDS Team of Teams is ready to hit the ground running and take our district to a new level. We’re so grateful to all of our stakeholders for their enthusiastic support of this approach. Through the implementation of innovative programs, enhanced educational offerings, and a “name tag management” approach to individual student achievement, we’re going to create an environment where every student can thrive.
As we embark on this exciting journey of continuous improvement, I am confident that with your support and the dedication of our Team of Teams, Bay District Schools will achieve new heights of excellence. Together, we will put the “A” back in Bay and create a brighter future for all our students. Thank you for your commitment to our schools and our community. Here’s to an amazing 2024-2025 school year!
Magilla Productions filmed more Beachfront Bargain Renovations recently for Magnolia Network (a subsidiary of HGTV). While that show was under way, House Hunters was helping a family find their perfect home. They searched from one end of Bay County to the other, but you’ll have to tune in to find out where they finally bought their forever home.
Brooke Graham (Flying C Records) came to PCB from Texas to film her latest music video, “ME TIME”. She was playing at the Parrothead Rendevous where she received a big welcome. Big shout out to Goofy Golf and the County Pier for letting us film the balance of her video there, with the beautiful white sandy beaches as the backdrop.
Jupiter Entertainment filmed a True Crime Documentary regarding the series of jewelry store robberies in the region, including Reeds Jewelry Store. Even though this crime took place 10 years ago, it is relevant as the female robber is scheduled to be released from prison in the upcoming months.
Farmer’s Dog pet food made a huge impact in Panama City Beach filming their new spot. This popular brand pulled out all the stops in scouting, crew, accommodations, and filming this major commercial. The entire team was WOWED with Panama City Beach and the welcoming they received. GOOD JOB, EVERYONE! You know who you are…
Film University students continue to flock to Bay County to shoot their thesis films as their final task of their college requirements. These students are put through all the moves (permits, releases, etc) as they would be in the real world of filming. “HIS JOURNEY” is a faith based film shot by Michael Bishop of Full Sail Film School. He also happens to be working at WMBB.
You KNOW there are lots of other shoots that were noteworthy, but the Film Commission will surprise you with some of those as they are released. And REMEMBER…If your home or business is asked to be used as a filming location, PLEASE contact the Film Commissioner, Julie Gordon, at 850.819.4694, floridafilmoffice@knology.net. They need to provide certain documentation for your protection and theirs.
Science is hot this summer at FSU PC
The summer is a busy time at Florida State University Panama City, with programs for all ages running at full STE(A)M, focusing on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. These programs are igniting students’ imaginations about STEM studies and career opportunities and preparing their teachers to keep those fires burning through the school year.
A series of STEM camps led by Dr. Daniel Georgiadis, in association with the Department of Defense, will allow middle grade students to explore artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies; the Summer STEM Institute will provide professional development credits for Bay District teachers through a partnership with U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NavSea) and a grant from the FSU Foundation; and the Collegiate School at FSU PC, in association with our STEM Institute, is offering day camps that incorporate both STEM and the Arts (literature, photography and digital design).
“The FSU Panama City STEM Institute connects university resources, faculty expertise and professional know-how with school districts, educators and students to enhance STEM curriculum and classroom practices,” said Dean Randy Hanna. Visit PC.FSU.edu/stem for more on our STEM Institute.
Students eligible for scholarships in Hospitality & Tourism Florida State University Panama City is offering up to $1,500 per semester in additional scholarships to students in the Hospitality & Tourism Management degree program. All that is required to receive the scholarship, which can be stacked with other financial aid and scholarships, is to enroll full time.
“The Hospitality & Tourism Management major is student focused and industry driven, guided by best practices and a global perspective,” said Dean Randy Hanna. “You’ll receive a unique, personalized experience every step of the way along your academic journey.”
The industry engagement, internships and student activities in this major prepare students for a career in making other people’s comfort, enjoyment and happiness their business. For details, visit PC.FSU.edu/hospitality.

Coming into a new city or starting a new career path will always come with some daunting challenges. Whether you are fresh out of school, have moved for a new job opportunity, or just started a new position, it can be a very turbulent pool to navigate alone. Thankfully, the Panama City Beach Chamber does such a great job of providing opportunities to help anyone have the upper hand in being successful in Bay County.
An incredible tool that the PCB Chamber has put in place is the Young Professionals (YP). This Committee was created for adults aged 21-40 to have more focused opportunities to grow, learn, and develop around those in the same walk of life. We do that through socials, luncheons, tours, and general fellowship with one another monthly.
If you are someone that would benefit from this committee, I would love to invite you to our next event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the amazing Panama City Beach Chamber staff or ask around as I am positive that any of our 100+ YP members would love to tell you how great of an opportunity it is to be a part of this active committee.
Ambassadors play a crucial role in the Chamber of Commerce! They attend a variety of events like groundbreakings, beautifications, and ribbon cuttings, which are important milestones for local businesses and community development. They also participate in networking events such as Business After Hours, Friday at the Beach, the Annual Golf Classic, Women’s Work-Life Symposium and much more. These events provide excellent opportunities for Ambassadors to connect with fellow Chamber members, fostering relationships and collaborations that benefit the local business community. It’s a great way to build networks and contribute to the growth and vibrancy of the Chamber and its members.
There is no cost to join the Beach Chamber Ambassadors. Your time is valuable and we appreciate all you do for our Chamber and members, aka Chamber family!
Ready to join the Ambassador team? Email: Anna@PCBeach.org for an application. Once we receive the application, we will contact you to schedule your orientation to ask questions, receive your temporary name badge, and meet the Ambassador Chairman. But in the meantime, feel free to start attending the events listed on our weekly e-blast aka “Beach Buzz” under “Ambassador events.”
If you haven’t scheduled your Grand Opening, Ribbon Cutting, or Ground Breaking, contact our Vice President, Director of Membership, Shannon Richmond, at (850) 890-8069
