STAYING HEALTHY Learn how to stay healthy and help others around you do the same. To find out more, ask at the Practice’s reception.

BACKGROUND The multiculturally diverse and relatively poor borough of Tower Hamlets faces different challenges. Lack of knowledge and care about staying healthy leads to a high rate of diabetes and other lifestyle related difficulties. The health center is therefore looking for a new way of exchanging information with the community.

Service Design

September 2014 ~ March 2015

We combinated all of the insights from our different research to make a big picture, e.g. stakerholder map, user journey map, interview etc. Eventually, we concluded them as our inital problem.

INITIAL PROBLEM

There is a lack of meaningful patient feedback in the blithehale medical centre. WIDER PROBLEM There is an increasing demand for healthcare as a result of a lack of knowledge in the community The practice has little means to deal with the root causes of the increase in people's demand September 2014 ~ March 2015

WIDER PROBLEM There is an increasing demand for healthcare as a result of a lack of knowledge in the community Break down into 4 parts

14

Service Design

SOLUTION

People lack health knowledge

Transfers health knowledge to the community

The Practice already has limited resources

Needs only a small resource investment

The Resources cannot prevent demand

It offers preventative healthcare knowledge

Community connection isn’t strong enough

Kids are naturally connected

September 2014 ~ March 2015

By using teaching methods that spread healthcare knowledge into the community e.g. posters

There is an existing after school club already that requires little resources

By teaching them preventative healthcare knowledge, the demand on the practice is lessened

to friends and family and their interest in health links them to the surgery

Health Cadets builds on the idea of the existing after school club. With the ultimate goal of keeping people healthier and reducing demand for care, it aims to be more strategic about what it teaches and how those learnings can be transferred back to the community. By teaching on local health issues with tools to make the learning outcomes of each lesson highly visible, the after school club can become an effective health promotion tool in the community

Their students are offered the opportunity to register with Smooth Start online when they receive confirmation of their place. If they choose to sign up, the university simply passes the student information to Smooth Start. Smooth Start gives this information directly to its partners: the accommodation company, the bank and the telephone provider, who set up temporary accommodation, a bank account, and a mobile phone for the student, depending on their needs. The service providers feed the students’ new bank account details, address and telephone number back to Smooth Start and welcome their new international customer to their service.

VALUES

STUDENT By using Smooth Start, students, who have already established a relationship of trust with their university, will feel like their university is working together with them to give them the best possible experience of arriving in a new country.

$

UNIVERSITY By using Smooth Start, the universities will be able to provide a valuable and surprisingly easy experience for students, whilst reducing their workload at the beginning of the term.

$

PARTNER By partnering with Smooth Start, the banks, housing companies and phone network providers will have access to a sizeable and lucrative market share whilst also reducing their administrative burden in processing and checking documents. RBS High Street Ken branch gave us insight into the fact that banks don’t see the value in international students because they take a lot of staff time, have difficulties with communication and don’t always come prepared - a service like Smooth Start would reduce in-branch time and prepare the students better for their new start. Smooth Start can share these details back to the other service providers and the university. The university can now better keep their information up-to-date. By grouping all the university’s students together through Smooth Start, we’re also increasing our buying power, and getting the best deals for the students on these essential services.

What is YOUR COLOUR today?

CHALLENGE This project with the Natural History Museum ask us to consider the way in which the museum develops and delivers its Late Night events and how these connect into audiences' experience. The topic of the lates in June 2016 will be "Colour and Vision".

24

Service Design

Interaction involves a give and take. In terms of all the paid events and free activities in Natural History Museum, audiences are always in the role of "Take" much more than "Give", they have little means to have a voice in Museum Lates.

The interview offered me to understand the opportunity of meeting other audiences and the thought of building connection with common factors.

Colour Emotion

A question was posted on the wall, an opportunity for audiences to think about colour emotion and to contribute their experience and thought through the text and drawing via speech-bubble shape post it. Audiences also can "Take" form other audiences' comment, it might be a trigger to chat with people who next to you.

After audiences “Give”, they will “Take” and learn what that colour(red) could mean. Natural History Museum would provide some key words of the meaning of the colour in terms of emotion and nature. Learning by thinking could reinforce those memories afterwards.

Give

Take

Colour & Vision A question was provided, more and more feedback were given. This part encourage audiences to draw that colour(red) stuff or organism appearing in their environment, connecting the colour and their vision. Other audiences are able to give a comment or a like to the drawing. It is kind of praise and "Give" and it encourages audiences to think about why those objects are red and to utilise the knowledge from the learning board.

First of all, we want to understand how the wheelchair user operated the existing suitcase.

Target product: suitcase

HOME

AIRPORT

HOTEL

Put on the table

‧Put on the table with the handle(emtry suitcase, high table) ‧Need to rotate the suitcase to open it

Put on the floor

‧Lay down the suitcase, but hard to pull it (two hand) ‧Always get trouble in opening the zipper

Put on the table

‧Need helper, can’t do it by themselves ( 20 KG suitcase)

Pack the sutcase

‧Put many stuff in it ‧Can’t touch the inside of suitcase, it is too heavy ‧Can’t touch the bottom of suitcase, need to rotate the suitcase to operate

Put in / Take out stuff

‧Get trouble in opening the zipper (by themselves) ‧Can’t Rotate the suitcase (need to change the position)

Pack the sutcase

‧The foot can’t stretch because of the height ‧Because of the siutcase in front, the distance between hand and suitcase is too far to touch inside

Close the suitcase

‧It is too heavy for close the suitcase with one hand ‧Need to rotate the suitcase to open it

Close the suitcase

‧Can’t touch the cover of suticase (if have some angle, possible to close it )

Put on the floor

‧Need helper, can’t do it by themselves ( 20 KG suitcase)

Mrs Lam told us what is the problem when she use existing suitcase.

INTERVIEW After our analyzing, We do a lot of interview with wheelchair users. From the interview, we noticed that wheelchair users met some problems with current suitcases while packing up their luggage. They couldn’t use the current suitcases without other people’s help, therefore they can barely travel by themselves.

FIELD EXPERIENCE We hate build castle in the air. Moreover, we even experienced an unusual travel on a wheelchair, then we find out that there are a lot of problem still need to be improved.

Modern people like to enjoy lives through traveling, however, a normal activity like travel would be luxury to people using wheelchairs. They will meet barriers not only in the environment, but also their psychological conditions. They would feel bad when always asking other people for help since they don’t want to become a burden to them. From the basis of “ design for wheelchair traveling”, we searched for the touch point of design. We hope that through our design, wheelchair users can travel with carefree and satisfaction independently. Last but not the least, we’d like to expand our design to universal design. We hope our design can benefit not only the wheelchair users but also old people or people who move with difficulty. We believe that not only the environment, but also products should be accessible to everyone.

PRIMARY CONSIDERATION When you are alone, then you want to take a photo of yourself. You need help from others. If the helper is a beginner, it is hard to explain what you want. For instance, the angle of taking photo, proportion and the distance. General digital camera did not come up with good solution within this situation. So I decided to dig into this problem.

SEARCH & GENERALIZE ISSUES

PREFACE

First of all, I interview my target users and figure out the issues. It is because I am going to seek for the opportunities. before that, I need to generalize all of issues in different title in order to plan the next process.

PROBLEMS TO SINGLE-USER

PROBLEMS TO MULTI-USER (e.g. A hoped that B takes photo for A)

Not user-friendly to the beginner Can not find the button easily Do not know the signficcant of the button Possible to confuse to the front/back of the camera Do not know the multi-function button Always take a blurred photo due to unstablity with you hand Hard to distingish the difference after changing the value Hard to distingish various of jacks if not usually operate Can not watch theb preview screen when Autodyne Some function can not be used suddenly when batteries are low Too many different type of fucntions

B do not know how to take the camera A do not know how to describe the function to B: the angle of taking the photo, distance, proportion B do not know whether A satisfied the photo he took A do not know how to tell the perfect time of taking photo with B A do not know how to take the multi photo with different values B do not know A's instruction e.g.: A tell B to adjust the exposure but B can not find the button B press the unknown button, then do not knwo how to exit A probably do not know whether B have taken the photo or not e.g. far distance A do not know how to tell B take what photo A wants. e.g. many place

Print all the issues in a paper and cut it in a small pieces so as to generalize it. Lastly, give a title to different groups and print it out into a new paper.

54

Industrial Design

September 2012 ~ June 2014

CLASSIFY ISSUES UNDER

8

TOPICS

Based on the issues, I classify issues under 8 topics, then invite my target users (7~8 friends) to help me. I explain my demand and brainstorming.

BRAIN STORMING 1. A do not know how to tell B what the photo style he wants 2. B do not know whether A satisfied the photo he took 3. User-friendly to the beginner 4. Camera can not be used easily by the mass difference of the body 5. User is not familiar with the function of the camera detailly 6. Problems with the bad interface design of the camera 7. Not enough hints when using the camera 8. others

If they have thought any idea, they would use sticky to paste on corresponding issue paper. According to those ideas, I try to look for the opportunities so that I can decide my "main course" and "side dishes".

From all of the issues, finally I decided my topic that is to separate the "Preview screen" and "Camera lens". It is because it is the most directly way to preview accuratly than communicate to the helper even if the helper is a beginner. if you can preview it, the photo would be what you want.

Based on the issue and situation, I set my target user as a student and write the persona. After that what I design need to suit my persona. It is a good training to restrict my design.

PERSONA Age: 18 Gender: female Profession: student Height: 170 cm Weight: 55 Nationity: Macau Residence: Macau, indepedent room Statue of physiology: good, no special sickness Interest: shopping, photography Choosing digital camera because it is light and easy to carry, she would not choose SLR camera done with complicated operating. Like to seek out and taste delicious food and like to take photos to share with her friends.

SCEN ARIO

Scenario 1 - (B help A take photo) Student - female 18 years old (we call A in this article) On saturday, A go out with B. They saw a beautiful sunset glow in the evening. A take out "diversified cam" and let B take photo for her. Firstly, A take a preview photo at a approximate angle she want, then the "cam" would record the coordinate (x,y,z axis). After that, A separate the camera lens to B and then A take the preview part. A observe through the preview screen that her position and angle whether she expects. B take camera lens slightly low, so the back screen of camera lens shows the position is a bit low than A's record and then the "pan up" indicative light would flash. When B take it higher, the back screen would show that "pan up" light disappear and the "centre original point" light would flash. It explained that B have been the correct position as A's record. Through the preview screen, A confirm whether there is any passer-by behind her and observe her position. So that A can take a photo according to her will.

INTRODUCTION In some situation, needing the other people to take a photo for you. It is not the first time that such things happen, but in fact, you can’t preview whether the angle, proportion and the distance are what you want.

60

Industrial Design

September 2012 ~ June 2014

SOLUTION The way to solve problem is to separate the “preview screen” and “camera lens”. The advantage of this design is you can preview all the details by yourself accurately. Merely Requesting the helper oriented the camera lens to you.

CHOOSE COLOR In order to distinguish the "camera part" and "preview part". I use intimation of color, camera part is as drak red, preview part is as dark grey. The button is red becuase it is easier to distinguish and reduce the other button as much as possible. The goal is easier to the use when using the camera.

Hoped to adopt touch screen, reduce the number of button because of reducing the confused cognition. Showing that simplify the operating interface.

The back of camera attachs small tripod. Because it is necessary when autodyning. It is hard to find a suitable-high table, so the elevation angle of camera lens can increase the flexible and usability.

PAN

SYSTEM

The way for user is to separate in two parts:

BEGINNER

ADVANCED

Helper is beginner, only demand the helper take the lens that orient to you but you need to adjust the details and your position. Overall, the photo may be appeared deviation.

Complex method is the "PAN SYSTEM" (upper picture). As you can see, when the circle is green that means your position is original point. Method: First, you take a photo under your expected angle, it is zeroing of XYZ axis of the camera. It means that your position is original point at present. When you give the camera to the helper, it probably appear deviation because of the height or wrong position.

Center

Pan left

Pan up

Why design a strip of red camera? It is because anticipated that helper use two heads to take the red camera so that increasing the stability. Furthermore, it is easier to control the orientation.

For instance, if the helper is shorter than you, so the position of camera will be lower than before. So the PAN SYSTEM would show "PAN UP" pattern in order to make the helper perceive that taking the camera a bit higher. When the camera come back to the original point, the SYSTEM will show "CENTER" pattern, you can notice that according to the scrren. After confirm it, it means you have dropped the deviation to the lowest.

in Junior, it is essential to deal with internal construction. Hard to improve the product from appearance. So it is quite a big challenge to me and it involved in part of technology. But in fact, I feel considerably happy because I have learnt how to cut in a problem, from dismantlement to interview. Concerned the demand of users and so on. Although this product is not perfect but it is definitely a good start for me in no doubt.

CONCEPT In this term, our topic is “Care aged”. Nowadays, we hope that elders could live a independent life and keep their self-esteem. I design this “Combo-Sticks”, the concept is very simple, that is combination with the chopsticks, not only easy to lose the single one, but also it is benefit for the elderly to find them when you are preparing the tableware.

This is a good way to combine because it is not easy to be snapped in this structure.

CHANCE POINT

It is a group project, 3 person in one group.Because of the theme, we search a lot of exsiting manual juicer, try to understand the construction of juicer and find out the problem that we want to solve.

Before we design the manual juicer, we do many experiments. Eventually, we discover that manual juicer is hard to clean the gap because flesh of fruit is easier to be clipped by the gap and adhere on the juicer.

2

FINAL VER.

IMPROVE

FUNCTION

Although we reinforce the depth of the lower part but it is not goodlooking. Overall, it is too large for user.

In final version, we improve the previous problem. We modified the bottom of the lower part from right angle to arc so that the lower part is not essential to design too deep. It is because the gap would not be squeezed by the flesh of the fruit.
