New construction 150,000 sf Student body 950 Construction budget $48M Completion expected 2020 The new high school for MSAD #75 is in the design phase, following an extensive community planning process involving citizens, students, and families from the communities of Topsham, Harpswell, Bowdoin, and Bowdoinham. MSAD #75’s decision to stay on their existing campus will allow the new high school to continue its relationship with the middle school on a central site with abundant natural features.

Expansion Study/Master Plan Casco Bay High School PORTLAND, MAINE

Student body 355 Completed 2014 CBHS has been housed on two floors of Portland’s PATHS building since its founding in 2005. The school has a strong sense of mission and identity and a need for research and “maker” spaces. As a new institution occupying space designed for other purposes, and experiencing rapid growth, the school asked for a study to reconfigure existing space plus new space made available when the Superintendent’s Office moved out.

As part of their experiential curriculum, a “crew” of students met with PDT designers in our office and at the school, conducted team research and planning, and returned to PDT to present their findings, which were incorporated into the final plans.

Needs were identified—meeting space for the entire community, a distinctive entry with new signage, performance and presentation spaces, and better circulation patterns. Respecting the limited budget, the Master Plan prioritized a series of projects to be undertaken as funds became available.

STEM Expansion/Master Plan Buildout Casco Bay High School PORTLAND, MAINE

Renovation 4,300 sf Student body 355 Completed 2015 The first phase of the CBHS Master Plan buildout is a series of state-of-the-art STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) chemistry and physics classrooms and a physics maker space equipped with 3-D printers.

The classrooms are designed and furnished for maximum flexibility so that teaching and learning can continually change.

Students can pick up the furniture to change classroom configurations from discussion, to group work, to individual workstations all during one class period. Secure storage and prep areas are adjacent to work areas.

Science classes at CBHS are integrated with math and humanities classes and are often geared toward the school’s current expeditionary learning theme. These classrooms support constantly changing groups of students collaborating on multiple projects.

Cafeteria and Classroom Addition Freeport High School FREEPORT, MAINE

Renovation/addition 30,000 sf Student body 540 Construction cost $14.6M Completed 2017 This project addresses needs for expansion and updating that were identified in PDT’s 2012 Master Plan for the campus.

A new 2-story addition on the northwest side of the building houses a food court and kitchen as well as 7 new classrooms, a band room, and fitness and health rooms. New learning spaces— STEM classrooms, active learning classrooms, art and ceramics rooms, and learning labs in the library—accommodate evolving modern education practices. A new entrance, ADA accessibility updates, new flooring, bathrooms, and technology are also included.

Traffic reconfiguration, with new parking and pick-up and dropoff loops, improve flow and safety.

Master Plan Buildout Thornton Academy SACO, MAINE

6 renovations and 1 addition Student body 1600 Completed 2013-15 A private academy that functions as the local high school, Thornton Academy has been strategically increasing its enrollment in order to increase diversity and offer a broader range of courses. PDT’s 2012 Master Plan “found” space for instructional programs that could be reclaimed by moving some functions and renovating others.

Chief among the 7 small projects were the renovation of the old gym space for the new library, and the renovation of the former library for the Arts + New Media program. This advanced technology space provides the tools for courses such as Music Technology, Game Design Development, Technical Writing in an iPad World, and Video Production.

As a result of the Master Plan, PDT has designed several larger projects: a 4,000-sf middle school addition, a 12,000-sf, 6-classroom STEM addition to the Scamman Science Building, and a dormitory.

Scamman Science Addition Thornton Academy SACO, MAINE

Addition 12,773 sf Construction cost $2.5M Completed 2016 The new 8-classroom STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) addition allows the school to strengthen and expand its regular and AP curriculums. Features such as teacher prep rooms, ceiliing-mounted cord reels, ample fume hoods, Apple TVs, movable tables and chairs, demonstration stations, and daylighting support inquiry-based learning.

In the course of a 90-minute class, AP biology and chemistry classes may rearrange the furnishings several times to move from lecture to small conference to research stations.

Mt. Blue Campus FARMINGTON, MAINE

New construction 133,000 sf Renovation 87,000 sf Construction cost $50M Completed 2013 Lee J. Brockway Award for School Design, Association for Learning Environments (formerly CEFPI) LEED for Schools Certified This major overhaul of the Mt. Blue High School/Foster Technical Center campus serves as a state model for fully integrating career technical education (CTE) with an academic high school.

The organizational principles place academic classrooms directly adjacent to CTE labs and scatter CTE programs throughout the floor plan, allowing for complete integration between the two.

The building incorporates multiple alternative energy technologies such as wood chips, geothermal, solar hot water heating, electrical wind generators, and photovoltaic panels. All of the alternative energy technologies have been designed to be monitored and maintained as part of the school curriculum.

The building was designed with 1-, 2-, and 3-story instructional blocks, with shorter blocks designed for future expansion.

There are two new performance spaces: a 500-seat, two-story auditorium to serve the theater, music, dance, and video media programs, and a 250-seat performance space for academic lectures, meetings of the faculty senate, and small group performances.

Lake Region High School & Vocational Center MSAD #61 NAPLES, MAINE

High School addition/renovation 15,000 sf Vocational Center renovation 44,000 sf Student body 900 Completed 2013 The 40-year-old high school building needed updates to enhance educational programming and community use, energy efficiency, pedestrian and traffic safety, and ADA accessibility. The entire existing building received new windows, HVAC systems, lighting, interior finishes, and a new bus drop-off.

The renovation and expansion of the Vocational Center provided space for some programs that had been housed in temporary classrooms and allowed the establishment of some new programs.

Renovated space in the Vocational Center includes the diversified occupations kitchen, CNA classroom, computer rooms, CADD drafting rooms, and culinary kitchen with banquet room. These new spaces replace undersized and poorly ventilated 1960s shop areas.

Education & Services Building Lake Region Vocational Center MSAD #61 NAPLES, MAINE

New construction 20,750 sf Completed 2013 The Education and Services Building features high-bay construction with ample storage, full-height overhead doors, efficient air-quality control systems, and passive solar heating with south-facing Kalwall windows. It houses expanded largevehicle maintenance, auto repair, and building construction trade programs, plus MSAD #61 services operations (transportation, facilities, and food). The stand-alone facility doubles the bus fleet maintenance shop and automotive program while eliminating indoor air quality problems in the existing school.

Cony High School AUGUSTA, MAINE

New construction 175,000 sf Renovation 55,000 sf Student body 900 Construction cost $25.5M Completed 2006 Cony High School (now Cony School) is a state-of-the-art, hightech educational facility that incorporates many green, sustainable technologies and was the first school building to be approved for a grant from the Maine Public Utility High-Performance Grant Program.

The school was designed for four learning communities, each of 225 students. The learning communities and sports and fine art facilities rotate around a central public food court that provides access to computer labs, the library, social services, and general administration, as well as the main entry and lobby for the school.

Connections between the new school and the adjacent 1970s Capital Area Technical Center allow both to function independently while allowing students to cross over and take advantage of both curriculums. There is no duplication of resources, curriculum, teachers, or equipment, resulting in a highly efficient building and educational program.

Sustainability features include maximum daylighting in classrooms and central spaces, an exterior envelope system with thermal barriers, and extensive building mass to reduce heating and cooling cycles. The design incorporates numerous energy-saving electrical devices, from light sensors to variable-frequency fans and motors.

There are fiber optic cable and wireless hubs throughout, and all academic areas are air conditioned to allow for year-round use. Because of Cony’s long history of supporting fine arts and athletics, the school has exceptional gymnasium and locker room areas, as well as extensive music and fine art facilities.

Music Wing York High School YORK, MAINE

New construction 9,600 sf Completed 2006 York High School’s active music program includes a 130-member Chorus, the freshman and sophomore Treble Choir, the Chamber Singers, the Jazz Band, and a 65-piece Concert Band.

This locally funded Music Wing alleviates overcrowding with new practice spaces, chorale and band rehearsal rooms, a keyboard classroom, instrument and uniform storage, and faculty offices.

Special attention was paid to soundproofing and acoustical engineering.

The Music Wing is adjacent to the existing auditorium and is designed to integrate with a future performing arts center.

Dormitory Thornton Academy SACO, MAINE

New construction 22,700 sf Completed 2017 The Thornton Academy Village Master Plan identified four dormitories to be constructed on the main campus along Saco’s Main Street.

Route This third dormitory is a two-story building that can accommodate 52 students and four dorm parents’ families in separate apartments. Like the previous two dormitories, it is designed in a style reminiscent of the shingle style vernacular.

The orientation of the building along Main Street creates a safe, common access point, protecting the privacy of the families and students residing in the dormitory village.

The building has been designed with breaks along the length of the building including changes in wall planes to create residentialscale building blocks and porches at the apartments. Contrasting paint colors and window accent colors along the façade further emphasize the residential massing elements.

Windham High School WINDHAM, MAINE

New construction 145,000 sf Renovation 75,500 sf Student body 1,150 Construction cost $27M Completed 2004 The Windham High School project fully renovated the 1960s high school building and tripled the size of the facility.

The new and renovated space was designed to afford Windham the flexibility of multiple configurations for houses and grade level groupings. The building is presently broken down into four academic houses: a ninth-grade house and three separate, looped academic houses.

The typical house has two oversized computer classrooms with 13 hardwired, high-speed fiber optic machines and two teaching stations, as well as a double-sized integrated classroom with a folding partition so the classroom can be divided.

Each house also has a faculty workroom and a student project area, as well as a small seminar-sized classroom. Project breakout areas are furnished with comfortable furniture and computer ports for laptops, as well as hardwired network connections.

The building has fiber optic cable and wireless hubs throughout, a state-of-the-art library, an oversized gymnasium, and an 800-seat auditorium.

Designed as a high-performance structure that incorporates high levels of insulation, thermal barriers, and building mass to reduce heating and cooling costs, the building also maximizes natural daylighting to reduce electricity use and improve light levels. All academic areas are air-conditioned to allow year-round use of facilities.

Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School SOUTH PARIS, MAINE

New construction 165,000 sf Renovations and additions 100,000 sf Student body 1,240 Construction cost $21.2M Completed 1998 The first comprehensive high school in the State of Maine, Oxford Hills combines existing high and technical schools into a single institution offering “seamless� education with a high degree of collaboration between vocational and academic programs.

The school is organized in six specialty clusters, all centered around a communications core consisting of the media center, the television studio, and presentation/community meeting rooms.

A public mall through the heart of the building connects the major functions: school store, administration area, library/media center, cafeteria/auditorium, and gym.

PDT conceived a program for enhancing community auditorium facilities by converting the existing auditorium into a cafeteria/ auditorium with 600 seats and creating a new horseshoe-shaped intimate forum with 300 seats.

A central human services area combines the traditionally separate functions of administration, guidance, nurse, community education, and athletics. The new library was built into the old gymnasium space.

Poland Regional High School/ Bruce M.Whittier Middle School POLAND, MAINE

New construction 137,000 sf High School student body 500/ middle school 200 Construction cost $12M Completed 1999 In voting to build their own middle and high schools, the Town of Poland, which had always tuitioned its students to other towns, took on the design of a new institution as well as the construction of a building.

PDT and the Maine Center for Educational Services led a series of public visioning sessions involving community members and district administrators to arrive at a vision statement and concepts of building organization: Separate gym, cafeteria, classrooms, and playfields • Shared art, music, library, auditorium • House-based organization • Teacher planning centers outside classrooms • Commons interconnects community functions • Flexible classroom sizes •

By referencing older buildings in town, among them the famous Poland Spring Inn, the architectural design of this school reinforces pride and community ownership.

The commons area, which serves as a lobby for all community functions, was designed as a “town square” at the heart of the building. Specialized high school and middle school spaces are strategically arranged to enhance interdisciplinary teaching and project-based group learning.

A rich variety of colors evokes traditional values while enlivening spaces used primarily by young adults.

The 400-seat auditorium is used for town meetings as well as school events.

Arts Center Thornton Academy SACO, MAINE

New construction 54,400 sf Student body 1,000 Construction cost $4.8M Completed 1996 This arts center, library, and cafeteria project created a new quadrangle on the campus and a new civic-minded faรงade to Main Street.

It added 54,000 sf of much-needed space, connecting three existing campus buildings and assuring barrier-free access to the majority of the campus.

The project features a 500-seat theater with two lobbies: one doubles as an art gallery, and the other doubles as overflow cafeteria space.

Extensive teaching and performance spaces for music, drama, dance, and video surround the theater. The project also includes a 2-story media center designed around a central skylight and a cafeteria that can be subdivided into two lecture halls.

Auditorium Addition South Portland High School SACO, MAINE

New construction 52,800 sf Student body 1,000 Construction cost $5M Completed 1997 This project, initiated by students with the help of school staff and parents, was conceived as an “arts school” within South Portland High School.

The addition was planned as a self-contained performing arts center, including the auditorium, a stepped-platform band room, a large chorus room, a keyboard instruction room, practice rooms, renovated art classrooms, teachers’ offices, a new cafeteria and kitchen, and a student store.

The addition created two new entrances: the front entrance is the more formal entrance into the lobby for the auditorium, and the back entrance leads to the cafeteria, student store, and band practice rooms.

The 800-seat auditorium is used extensively for school programs and performances. The Music Department, the city, and local music, dance, and theater groups use the venue for rehearsals, performances, and fundraisers, which can be broadcast on local access TV. Sliding panels subdivide the seating for smaller performances or conferences. Support functions include a cafeteria space that is easily converted into an oversized side lobby for large receptions.

The chorus room and the cafeteria dining area are also designed to double as performance/demonstration spaces.

The rest of the high school can be securely locked when the arts center is open in the evening.

Ellsworth High School ELLSWORTH, MAINE

New construction 120,000 sf Student body 675 Construction cost $10.6M Completed 1995 The largest single building in the City of Ellsworth, the high school recalls the largely brick nineteenth-century downtown, with its cluster of pitched roofs.

A compact grouping of functions is designed around a central concourse. Open before school and remaining open through all activities of the day, the concourse is the center of the school, an attractive place for students to wait, gather, socialize, and study.

Major public functions placed along the concourse include administration, guidance, the media center, the cafeteria, the auditorium, and the gymnasium.

The media center controls computer networking in the school and contains student computer stations for data access.

Special teaching spaces include computer labs, five science labs, a lofty art room, music and stagecraft rooms, a child development lab, and labs for the practical arts.

The auditorium, funded partially by local community referendum, has 400 fixed seats with an extra 200 telescoping seats that are out of the way when not in use. It features a catwalk, state-ofthe-art computer-controlled lighting, and generous performers’ balconies.

Gorham High School GORHAM, MAINE

Renovations and additions 155,000 sf Student body 750 Construction cost $8.2M Completed 1995 At Gorham High School, PDT converted an outdated group of buildings and additions built over 35 years into a renovated and expanded high school designed for teaching with technology.

PDT designed a series of state-of-the-art technology labs to be used by classes in all disciplines across the curriculum.

Classrooms are connected to the library and TV studio via voice, data, and television systems.

An English class studying Macbeth can broadcast a scene on local cable TV, and the art class can design and print posters for the show. Teachers from all disciplines can team teach in the labs (robotics, material processing, CADD, graphics, and communications) with the technology instructors.

Gorham’s Timothy W. McCormack Auditorium can be subdivided into three separate spaces, with 400 permanent theater seats and a bank of telescoping seating that divides into two 175-seat lecture halls. The state would have funded a 250-seat facility, so the rest was raised through local referendum.

When the telescoping seating is retracted, the area at the back, which is outfitted with floor jacks and lighting for TV broadcasting, functions as a community meeting space or presentation room. Art and music classrooms have direct access to the backstage area and can be used as makeup and costume areas and greenrooms.

Gorham High School’s proud history of athletic excellence is well served by new ballfields, tennis courts, an outdoor all-weather track, and a new gymnasium with locker rooms and training facilities.

“Gorham complex a winner,” declared the Portland Press Herald just after the facility opened.
