Hybrid Operating Room VA Medical Center WEST ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS

Renovation 5,000 sf Completed 2017 This design for a new 1,250-sf hybrid operating room and adjoining control room merges the surgical capability of a largescale OR with the imaging advantages of a catheterization lab. It allows for less invasive, safer procedures, leading to an increase in positive outcomes and faster patient recovery.

The room incorporates the most current integrated OR technologies available, including a Huntair Cleansuite ceiling diffuser system designed to structurally support nine boom mounts, along with a Philips FlexMove imaging system. The OR walls will be sheathed in Maquet’s Variop, a modular system of stainless-steel-clad panels, doors, and windows that requires minimal downtime for utility changes.

The project also included partial renovation of the adjacent Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

Renovation 22,640 sf Addition 7,200 sf Construction estimate $8.2M An unusual VA project that is not sited on a VAMC campus, this is an adaptive reuse of a historic 1951 US Army Reserve center being converted into a state-of-the-art research facility. The original 2-story building, an early Reisner and Urbahn design, arranged administrative functions around a central double-height drill hall that apparently was so noisy that the firm corrected the layout in subsequent designs for reserve centers around the country.

The new research facility requires the insertion of a new floor within the 2-story open assembly space for researchers into prosthetic limb technology. The research center consists of a mix of interview rooms and private offices with open-plan computer stations, conference rooms, and administrative spaces.

Neuroscience Research Addition VA Medical Center JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS

Addition 20,000 sf Out to bid Completion expected 2020 The design of the new Neuroscience Research Addition is largely informed by the need for flexibility. Changing research groups, missions, and technology require adaptation of floor plans and technology. The 20,000-sf four-story addition includes flexible lab and office spaces, an MRI suite, support spaces, and conference rooms designed to be converted into labs if needed.

The architectural aesthetic of the addition derives from its neuroscience function, its prominent siting on the VA campus, and the stated goal that it provide a compelling image as the “face� of the research program.

Phase 3, Façade Recladding VA Medical Center JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS

Exterior cladding replacement Construction estimate $8.95M To stay within the VA’s $10 million funding cap, this 1950s-era 14-story medical center is being reclad in separate phases.

Originally masonry-clad, the building was re-clad with metal panel in the 1960s. The current recladding is further complicated by subsequent renovations with different floor-to-floor heights, so the building has multiple different window placements and configurations.

The failing 1960s metal panels are being replaced with highperformance thermally-broken ACM panel and an aluminum curtain wall window system that meets current energy codes. Given the extremely tight urban site, PDT developed a panelization contract alternate to allow the contractor to construct panels off-site, thereby decreasing costs, delivery complications, and space requirements.

Domiciliary VA Medical Center BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS

Renovation 8,800 sf Design complete The Domiciliary Program provides rehabilitative and health maintenance care for motivated at-risk veterans. The DRRTP program typically does not require high levels of bedside nursing, observation, or intervention. The facilities provide a 24/7 therapeutic, supportive environment as part of the treatment program.

This project seeks to create a safe, home-like environment with recreational space, dining/kitchen, and supportive therapeutic/ meeting spaces. Secure suites will be provided for female veteran residents in both programs. LGBT veteran needs will also be accommodated with private sleeping rooms, if desired. Single user resident bathrooms shared by 2-4 beds and patient laundry facilities contribute to a more homelike setting.

Building 39 Specialty Clinics VA Medical Center WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VERMONT

New 16,000-sf third floor added on top of existing building Renovation 2,000 sf on floors below Completed 2014 The new high-performance addition houses six specialty clinics, so clear way-finding, adjacencies, and efficent patient waiting and travel routes were crucial. Support areas are centrally located so the clinics can share support staff. The central waiting area is subdivided into three areas that help orient patients toward the right clinic.

PDT’s feasibility study documented gaps between the structural system and current seismic codes, so new shear walls had to be installed through the existing floors in order to ensure stability of the building with the additional third floor. Mechanical and electrical systems and elevators were also upgraded throughout the building.

As this clinic houses a variety of ambulatory services for VA patients in limited space, each room was customized for specific equipment, procedures., and storage. Lighting is highly specialized, and wall and flooring color palettes are used throughout to facilitate wayfinding.

The audiology suite includes several soundproof testing rooms with adjacent control rooms for the technician. These are placed on a raised floor engineered to dampen sound and vibration.

7th Floor Opthalmology VA Medical Center JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS

Renovation 23,900 sf Completed 2013 Various functions of the VA Eye Clinic had begun to scatter as overcrowding necessitated taking space wherever they could find it. PDT was charged with addressing deficiencies in “functional layout . . . building infrastructure and environmental controls.�

Separate entrances off the elevator and new waiting and subwaiting rooms alleviate overcrowding and confusion.

The layout follows the chronology of the patient visit: first-stop functions such as Visual Fields and Pre-testing are close to the lobby and waiting, as are on-your-way-out functions such as Patient Education and administrative support. Staff space has been allocated at the end of the clinical area, out of patient circulation routes but convenient for supporting clinical needs.

8th Floor Optometry and Low-Vision VA Medical Center JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS

Renovation 23,900 sf Completed 2013 The departure of the Ophthalmology Clinic left space on the 8th floor for the expansion of the Optometry Clinic, administrative functions, shared research functions, a staff lounge, lockers, and and provider offices.

The 1950s-era concrete building had no existing air exchange; the clinics were using window air conditioners, and the heating was provided by the original fintube without individual controls.

This renovation included fitting new air handling units, with fresh air intake and exhaust, through areas of major renovation.

Women’s Imaging Center VA Medical Center JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS

Renovation: Imaging Center 2,543 sf; total: 7,865 sf Completed 2014 Before the Imaging Center was created, women’s diagnostic imaging services were scattered throughout the 11-story building, making it difficult for patients to navigate and for providers to deliver care. So the project’s primary goal was to create a private, comprehensive imaging suite focused on the special needs of women veterans. Early in the project’s development, the PLANETREE “patient centered” philosophy was recognized as the appropriate model to embrace as inspiration for the design and operation of the suite.

Beginning at the point of check-in, the patient is welcomed into a private, supportive environment that looks very different from the rest of the facility. The patient flow starts in the waiting room, continues on to dressing rooms and gowned waiting, and finally into one of four different imaging rooms: bone density, ultrasound, mammography, and stereotactic biopsy. A private consult room is located nearby.

The interior was transformed with the use of comfortable finishes in soft tones. Artwork, indirect lighting, and music support a positive and caring aesthetic.

Women’s Primary Care Clinic VA Medical Center TOGUS, MAINE

Renovation 3,660 sf Completed 2014 Part of a VHA initiative to help improve the quality of care for women veterans, this project was designed to provide comprehensive primary care that is private, safe, dignified, and sensitive to the needs of women veterans. The convenient, fully accessible first floor space can be accessed from a choice of building entry points and is close to parking.

The clinic floorplan is organized into two distinct areas to protect privacy: counseling services are on one side with clinical exam services on the other.

On the exam side, each of the four large exam rooms has its own private bathroom.

One of the exam rooms is sized for bariatric patients and has a built-in lift system. Patient spaces are filled with natural light throughout to reinforce a positive and supportive environment.

Finishes follow a calming natural theme with some feminine touches.

Specialty Clinics VA Medical Center TOGUS, MAINE

Renovation 13,000 sf, expansion 2,000 sf Completed 2008 The increasing need for services on the specialty floor at Maine’s VA Medical Center had far outgrown the clinical space available, pushing out wait times for appointments to unacceptable levels.

PDT was brought in to assess space needs, reorganize the floor by specialty, and develop wayfinding cues to improve patient flow.

At the point of arrival, a strong visual hub was created for reception. The new layout consolidates once-scattered departments for improved staff flow and efficiency. Travel distances are shortened and proper adjacencies aligned.

Additional exam and treatment rooms were added in Ophthalmology and Optometry.

New sub-waiting areas in the eye clinic and in PT/OT allow patients to wait closer to their destination while helping staff more closely monitor patient arrivals.

The reorganization freed up square footage for more clinical space in each of the departments. Audiology benefited by adding more exam rooms and a second sound isolation booth. PT/ OT nearly doubled in size by expanding onto a former exterior porch.
