Ransomware

Ransomware attacks aren’t going away anytime soon – having increased three-fold in 2015 to 1000 attacks a day we’re now up to 4000 attacks a day, and the numbers keep rising…

What Is Ransomware? This is a form of malicious software that you inadvertently allow access to your computer. Once it’s gained entry, it will encrypt all of your files making it impossible for you to access anything. You will get a pop up message demanding payment to unencrypt your files, and a message saying that if you fail to do so your data will be destroyed forever. Pretty nasty stuff. So how do you protect yourself? Whilst there is no 100% full proof protection, there are three ways you can help yourself. UPDATES: Do them - updates address software vulnerabilities and help maintain security against hackers. Yes, they’re a pain, and yes, they always come at the wrong moment, but they are there to help keep you safe.

BACKUP DATA: All of it – and regularly. We advise using a variety of backups, including automated cloud storage (you don’t need to remember to backup) and external backups – storing your data on an external hard drive. This way, even if you do succumb, you will be able to access all your files. NEVER PAY: there is no guarantee that your data will be released back to you. If they’re unscrupulous enough to do this kind of crime, they’ll be unscrupulous enough to take your money and leave you in the lurch. By paying, victims are also fuelling these crooks, enabling them to continue their extortion and hitting other victims using even more malicious ingenuity. If you do fall foul of ransomware please give us a call as we have extensive experience of helping both home users and businesses who have been hacked.

Clifden House Seaford Local dementia care centre gets fantastic rating by CQC! Following an unannounced inspection in May, Clifden House dementia care centre has received a ‘good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Inspectors found the service provided by Clifden House in Claremont Road to be safe, effective, caring and responsive, and awarded it the second highest grade. The CQC assessors praised the staff, saying they are “kind and caring and have developed good relationships with people. They support people to enable them to remain as independent as possible.” In particular, assessors also commended the wide range of activities available. “External entertainers were provided on both days of our inspection with music to suit a range of tastes and interests.” “For those who like a quieter life, Clifden House’s gardens offer a secure and safe environment to take a stroll. The home keeps hens and those who choose to, can assist in their upkeep.”

Activities and participation Deena McCormack, activity coordinator at Clifden House and dementia friend says; “I am passionate that all our residents are supported to continue doing what they most enjoy – whether that’s fishing, leading a poetry class, designing questions for pub quizzes - you name it! It is difficult to predict when sufferers might be able or willing to do the activity again, and they may not have the same ability as they had before dementia, but the most important aspect is the stimulation and enjoyment they get from it -– so our mantra is ‘carpe diem’ – seize the day!” Established 40 years ago, Clifden House Dementia Care Centre in Seaford specialises in providing residential and respite dementia care. www.clifdenhouse.co.uk

Nial Joyce of Clifden House said: “We are delighted to have received this grade from the CQC. It is a real endorsement of the efforts my staff and I make to ensure that our residents our happy, engaged and well cared for. The CQC feedback is invaluable and we are currently working to secure our ‘outstanding’ grade for next time.” A Dementia Friend Clifden House is also a member of Dementia Friends, the Alzheimer’s Society initiative that helps people learn about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turn that knowledge into action. Dementia Friends encourages everyone to be more patient when out in the community. Nial said: “As a specialist dementia care home we have first-hand knowledge of the disease and appreciate how challenging this condition can be for the person and their carers. As you would expect, we run a ‘dementia friendly’ home – including colour coded doors and walkways for ease of navigation, a relaxed café-style dining area and bespoke resident-focused activities to stimulate.” If you have a local article to publish email info@deansmagazine.co.uk

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Knee Pain Knee pain is very common, both from sport injuries and the wear and tear of day-to-day life. Knee joints serve a vital role in supporting your bodyweight and are put through added pressure when you walk, run or jump. Injuries include sprains, swollen or torn ligaments, damaged cartilage, and runner’s knee. Sports injuries tend to affect one knee; pain in both knees is more common with arthritis. Risk is increased as you get older, from being overweight and from high impact sports.

Anatomy: The knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body. It joins the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia), with a smaller bone running along the lateral (outside) of the tibia (the fibula) and the kneecap (patella) at the front. The thigh muscles that move the knee joint attach to the bones by tendons. Ligaments attach bones together, providing stability to the knee. The cruciate (cross) ligaments in the centre of the joint: anterior prevents the tibia sliding forwards on the femur; posterior prevents the tibia sliding backwards on the femur. The collateral ligaments on the outer (lateral) and inner (medial) sides of the joint prevent sideways movement of the joint. C-shaped menisci (cartilage) medial and lateral form shock absorption between tibia and femur. Bursae, fluid filled sacs help the knee move smoothly. Symptoms: Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, discomfort and stiffness in the knee with limited mobility; also swelling, redness and muscle spasms. You will need to see your doctor if you cannot weight bear on your knee, you have severe pain when not weight bearing, especially at night; your knee locks or clicks painfully, keeps giving way, looks deformed, you cannot fully straighten or bend it; you have pain, swelling, numbness or tingling in the calf of the affected knee; you have fever, redness or heat around the knee or it is very swollen; the pain hasn’t improved in a few weeks or is still severe after a few days of home care. Causes: Common causes from overuse or injury are: sprains and strains, tendonitis, bursitis (housemaid’s knee), anterior knee pain around the kneecap, Osgood-Schlatter disease in teenagers, iliotibial band (hip to knee) syndrome, medial plica syndrome affecting a fold of tissue in the knee joint, broken fragments of bone or cartilage in the joint, torn ligaments or tendons, bleeding in the joint. Cartilage damage from wear and tear or acute injury, partially dislocated kneecap (patellar) and diseases like gout, septic arthritis and osteoarthritis. Diagnosis: The doctor will examine the movement of your knee and may arrange extra tests such as X-ray, MRI or blood tests. Treatment: Depends on the severity and type of injury. Many injuries can be treated at home or get better with time. Avoid stressing the joint, use ice packs and elevate the leg. Painkillers or anti-inflammatories may be advised as well as physical therapy or arthroscopy, keyhole surgery to look inside the joint to assess and repair any damage. More serious injuries may require further surgery. Prevention: Stretching, warming up and cooling down for sports and workouts; wearing the right equipment such as

good trainers for running, knee pads for kneeling. Be prepared for your sport with good training. Attend to minor injuries before they become major. Listen to your body! Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine the knee, thigh and calf and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess motor nerve pathways. Consider the effect of the injury/condition on the whole body. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests. Treat to reduce muscle tension and pain and improve joint alignment. Advice regarding specific strengthening and stretching exercises. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Local history - Part 63

Brighton Trunk Murders; Mike Laslett

The Saltdean Connection!

In 1934 Brighton became infamous for two Trunk Murders; a dismembered female body being found in a trunk at Brighton Station and another at 52 Kemp Street. From being known as The Queen of Watering Places, Shot almost entirely on location, the murder is Brighton was soon renamed The Queen of Slaughtering investigated by officers from the old Police Station at Places! There had also been another trunk murder Brighton Town Hall. The isolated murder house is almost a hundred years earlier when John Holloway was referred to as 1, Bungalow Road, Saltdean, which I tried hung for the murder of his wife, ironically having to locate without success. I eventually discovered that wheeled the trunk up Lovers Lane to bury it. the location was actually Providence House in The American crime writer Hillary Waugh wrote “Sleep Long, Highway, Peacehaven, opposite Rushey Hill Caravan My Love” suggested by these murders. In 1962 it was Park, as it was a more remote location. Although it no made into the film “Jigsaw” by Val Guest. It starred Jack longer has tall chimneys, the house is still readily Warner, who you may remember from “Dixon of Dock identifiable. Green” and the film “The Blue Lamp”.

Providence House today

Madeira Drive

Should you wish to download the film or purchase the DVD you will be treated to an enormous choice of nostalgic locations: a steam train on the Lewes line near the junction with the Kemp Town branch, Finlay’s tobacconist on Brighton Station, the old Brighton Police Station at the Town Hall, Church Street, the estate agents in Kings Road, (now subsumed by the Brighton Centre) a grocers in Madeira Colonnade with a passing Volks railway train and many more. There is an opportunity to see much of Lewes and also the cars of 1962: models such as the Vauxhall Velux and Cresta, the Austin A55 Cambridge, the Ford Anglia and Consul, etc. The police car bears registration 2174 CD, these letters identifying it as a Brighton registered vehicle. The Mayor’s car used to bear the plate CD1 until it was sold.

The film is a good piece of social history, not only for the trades and shops but also police procedures such as the use of identity parades, identikit and teleprinters. Unfortunately victim support practice is also historic. When a young female becomes distressed two policemen wrestle her to the bed and throw a glass of water in her face! Another Sussex connection is that Jack Warner’s sisters lived in Steyning. Loved for their comic characters ‘Gert and Daisy’ their real names were Elsie and Doris Waters and they lived at the appropriately named “Waterside.” Acknowledgements: Film stills: courtesy Reknown Pictures Ltd. Friends of Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill Nature Reserve The Summer 2017 Ragwort Collection has started with a bumper 22 bags collected from The New Extension (formerly Golf Course) and another 16 from the section to the right of the Ovingdean Gate. If anybody noticed the pile of bags don’t fear as our Ranger collects either same day or early the following morning. We don’t want to get rid of the ragwort entirely as it provides food and a home to various insects. Our main aim is to stop the spread onto the surrounding farmland. It’s a tough but rewarding job as we try to clear section by section so that we can see the immediate results rather than tackling a huge area and get left wondering if we will ever finish (which we won’t but baby steps!). Speaking of which our resident musical whiz kid, Russ Greenwood, will keep you amused with his vast knowledge of pop music, Buck’s Fizz, Bananarama, Steps, Dollar and Neil Diamond are his favourites but he’s also got a good memory for James Bond theme tunes. Come along and have a sing-along whilst weed-pulling. Once we are done with the Ragwort the Brambles are next on our hit list. We’ve arranged a weekender session for Friday/Saturday 22/23 September. 10AM-noon and 24PM. No specific skills are required on our volunteer days just a willingness to help out. Workdays are the 2ⁿ Wednesday and 4 Friday of the month. Upcoming dates are August 25, September 13, 22ⁿ and 23 (which will be our first Scrub Bash of the Season). If you need an added incentive, after our Friday workdays we wander down to the Beacon Hub Kiosk Café for a cuppa and slice of cake or the newly added Panini selection. New volunteers are always welcome to join us, meeting 10.00 at Longhill Road, Ovingdean, entrance to the Nature Reserve. Tools are provided but please wear sturdy shoes/boots/gloves. Neighbourhood Watch

CSW What is Community Speed Watch? Community Speed Watch is a community based scheme designed to harness public support of Neighbourhood Policing by volunteers monitoring speeds of vehicles in areas of concern to the public. CSW provides the opportunity for the public to influence and contribute to the education of drivers and assist the police identify areas and times for enforcement. Speeding increases the risk of collisions and injuries. In communities it is antisocial for residents living near roads with excess speeding. It is an offence to exceed speed limits. SR&O NHW volunteers have been part of the CSW for well over a year and up until now have only been able to monitor 30 mph roads in Saltdean and on the Falmer Road at Rottingdean. At long last we have been given permission from Police and Council to monitor roads that have a 20 mph limit. This means that we will now be monitoring roads in Rottingdean and Ovingdean! If you are concerned with the speeding in a particular road in your area please let us know. The suggested roads have to be agreed by the road policing team before volunteers are allowed to monitor them.

We look on CSW as an educational initiative and hope that seeing our yellow high visibility jackets is a reminder to keep to the speed limit. The more roads we are able to cover means of course that more volunteers are required. Can you spare an hour every few weeks? Full training will be given. Don't just be one of the residents who moan about the speeding, contact us to do something about it! So look out for us on the roads - don't be caught speeding. Operation Crackdown Anti-social driving includes driving that is careless, deliberately aggressive or dangerous. For example Speeding - thoughtless driving - drink or drug driving mobile phone use - not wearing a seatbelt - under age driving. You can report anti-social driving and abandoned vehicles on line: www.operationcrackdown.org OR by phone: Call the Crackdown Hotline on 01243 642222. Always make sure you pullover in a safe place to make any notes or ask a passenger to record details.

Longhill Woodland Group

Brighton & Hove issue another Tree Preservation Order to preserve the Wildlife corridor Residents are delighted to hear that Brighton & Hove arboriculture department have issued another Tree Preservation Order (TPO) to protect many of the trees that are still standing on the site between Longhill Close and Elvin Crescent (Land East of Longhill Close). In October 2014 residents woke up to the sound of chainsaws and the smell of fires when developers moved in and partly destroyed the beautiful established woodland – a critical element of the Wildlife Corridor that connects two parts of the South Downs National Park.

In 2016 Brighton & Hove issued a Woodland TPO to cover part of the woodland, providing a backbone to the first official Wildlife Corridor identified in the City. But the new order will protect more of the precious trees that are still standing. Although the new TPO is immediately in effect, it is only temporary. The council are leading the way to protect the land, but now it’s time for us to show our support. If like us, you support this initiative please email arboriculture@brighton-hove.gov.uk asking for the TPO to be made permanent, you’ll need to state your name and address (incl. postcode) quoting the reference: ‘Tree Preservation Order: 2017/3 Land East of Longhill Close’

Before Clearance (Oct 2014)

Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre’s report on this site identified numerous species, some of which are rare, including bats, badgers, skylarks and orchids, to name just a few. Contact Longhill Woodland Group on longhillcloseland@gmail.com for more information.

Cinema Saltdean Film Review

London Symphony

Cert. U

A Film Director Calls in to Cinema Saltdean for a night with a difference No film in August, as we let the projector cool down, roll up the screen and search out our buckets and spades. We will be back in September for a very special screening of ‘London Symphony’, a brand new silent film, shot entirely in black and white, with a lyrical orchestral score especially written by James McWilliam. We are thrilled to have the director Alex Barrett with us to introduce and take questions on his new film ‘London Symphony’. This is something of a scoop for us since the film has had a ‘boutique’ release (after its London premiere at The Barbican) and is shown only in selected cinemas. ‘London Symphony’ was nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at the Edinburgh Film Festival. The film offers an artistic snapshot of the city as it stands today, and a celebration of its culture and diversity. It’s a contemporary take on the ‘city symphony’, a genre of creative non-fiction that flourished in the 1920s and consisted of works that attempted to build poetic portraits of city life. Barrett and McWilliam have worked hard to bring a similar sense of poetic playfulness to ‘London Symphony’, whilst also updating the form for the 21 Century. There was never a London Symphony in the 1920s, though Berlin and Paris did have their own films.

more construction work to come. We're swept through parks, streets and into cinemas, museums and places of religious congregation, people captured scuttling about their business, meeting for drinks and taking leisurely walks. The clash of tourists and those with more time on their hands, able to stop, take in and appreciate the sights. Animals, too, are captured, as much part of city life as people - from squirrels scuttling to seagulls, which are more of a menace than they're shown to be here. The multicultural, diverse aspect of London is a particular focus of Barrett's. Mosques, Sikh temples and churches lie mere metres away from one another, the different communities often shoehorned together into tight spaces. ‘London Symphony’ is a loving ode to the heart of the United Kingdom, a city that's seen but not always truly appreciated. ‘London Symphony’ will open our new season on Tuesday 26 September. Tickets available from our box offices at Saltdean Fruits, Lustrells Vale; the P.O., Longridge Avenue; and on the door; and via our website: www.cinemasaltdean.org With acknowledgement to Jamie Neish for part of the above. Jon

This will be Alex’s second feature film. ‘The aim of the film was to capture a city at a very specific point in its history, and the “story” is told over four chapters, intended to represent the movements of a symphony’. Shot in over 200 locations in and around the outskirts of London, the powerful images show us a bustling, diverse and ever-changing capital. It's a short slice of city life that nods to the past but places its emphasis on the kind of place London is today - multicultural, full of building works and stunning architecture, with the old existing alongside the new. Cranes are everywhere, while big, modern buildings dominate the skyline, signposts signalling

The Grange August Exhibitions The Grange Gallery continues with a refreshing and stimulating variety of exhibitions for August. 20 July – 8 August. MICK BENSLEY, this well-known Rottingdean marine artist, will be showing new works in oils, watercolours and pastels. He divides his time between painting, teaching and in his own words, “I continue to paint a range of subjects including portraits of people, their pets, landscapes, seascapes.” 10 – 22 August. JULIAN HAYWARD. This is a retrospective exhibition of the work of the architect and artist, Julian Hayward, who died in 2016. When he retired as lecturer at Brighton Polytechnic, he expanded his practice to include painting; all reflecting his enthusiasm for the environment, astronomy and music. His family intend this exhibition to be a tribute to him. 24 August – 5 September. ROTTINGDEAN CAMERA CLUB’s exhibition is entitled “In Focus” and will be showing photographs reflecting members’ interests including landscape, fauna, street and abstract.

Mick Bensley - West Pier

Looking ahead to September: “William Nicholson was my great-grandfather and I wanted to make the work for my show a response to him in some way”; the words of artist, Rafaele Appleby, who will be exhibiting at The Grange Gallery 21 September – 3 October. So, her participation in a Study Day “The Nicholson Family of Artists” on 23 September at the Rottingdean Whiteway Centre will be very personal. This celebration of the Nicholson family will be a joint venture with the Rottingdean Preservation Society. A sharp focus on the legendary artistic family, the day will include lectures about William Nicholson, his son, Ben Nicholson, and a visit to the official opening by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove of the nearby re-furbished William Nicholson studio. After lunch, Rafaele Appleby will give a talk about Winifred Nicholson, painter and wife of Ben Nicholson, entitled “Winifred Nicholson and her Family.”

Julian Hayward - Detail Black Tilescape

Rafaele, having recently visited the Grange Gallery for the first time, was “delighted to be offered the chance to have an exhibition there.” So, using her VW bus as a mobile studio she “visited many of the places where William liked to paint.” “I was also distracted,” she adds, “down other paths that led to discoveries of my own. The bus was bursting with pictures and ideas when I got home and I have been working with these since. The exhibition is part of the journey – not the end, as I can see paths that still need exploring.” Marian Philips

Jonathan Prior - Sunset Rig

THE Grange Gallery, The Grange, The Green, Rottingdean. Opening times: 10.30 - 16.00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (closed Wednesday) and Sunday 14.00 - 16.00. After having visited the exhibitions, why not relax in the lovely Edwin Lutyens / Gertrude Jekyll tea garden? You can indulge yourself on the courtyard, on the lawn or in the newly renovated small barn which has been renamed the Gertrude Jekyll room. Membership of the Rottingdean Preservation Society: Should you not yet be a member of the RPS and would like to join us, please telephone 01273 301164 or email rpsmemsec@gmail.com. Also, as our busy summer continues we look forward to the autumn with the welcome return of SlimShack in our charity concert series along with our team based Sponsored Swim at Roedean School. Every year we provide subsidised Christmas lunches for senior citizens in our area (Rottingdean, Saltdean, Woodingdean, Ovingdean and Falmer). We also organise subsidised senior citizen coach tours during the year that generally end up somewhere for a cream tea. These are all enjoyable events/days out with plenty of company. With these service activities in mind, we would like to update our contact list for senior citizens in our area. If you know someone, who is permanently resident in our area, over 65, retired and not in full time employment, that you feel would be interested please contact us and we will send them the appropriate form requesting their details. Of course if you are in this golden time yourself please make direct contact. We are keen to bring people together. Remember, there is no need to be lonely just let a Lion know you are there. On 11 November, the rhythm and blues group SlimShack is making a welcome return and will be performing for us at Rottingdean Village Hall with all monies raised going to local charities and community/Lion projects. Tickets are £10 each and are available now. There will be a licensed bar. It should be another lively evening with this well-known, much loved, local group. We hope you can make it.

would like to wish our new Lion President Ian Christie an equally triumphant year – long may it continue. As one of his final duties, Lion President Andy Wavell proudly presented a cheque for £5,000 to Autism Sussex, in Brighton to equip a multi-sensory room. We all know modern life surrounds us with stimuli from a variety of sources that at times can result in ‘sensory overload’ for people with autism. Juliet Smith, of Autism Sussex, said, ‘This facility will make a very big difference to people in Brighton with autism. We can’t thank the Lions enough.’ This Lions project is part of our Centenary Celebrations. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities, or you are interested in our SlimShack Concert or you would like to book a team at our Sponsored Swim, please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. On 19 November we have our popular Sponsored Swim at Roedean School Pool. The swim is held annually to raise money for local charities. Groups, through entered teams of any size, raise funds by obtaining sponsorship with the proceeds being split between their own choice of charity or good cause and Lions’ charities; once again this year the Lions’ principal beneficiary will be Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Teams swim for one hour with the aim of swimming as many lengths as possible. Please make contact soon if you would like to enter a team as we already have quite a few teams entered. We have recently started a new year for the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions. The last fundraising event held, for last year, was the annual Rottingdean Lions Fayre back in June and over £3,700 was raised; in addition we had a busy time selling tickets for our Grand Summer Draw. This marked the end of a very successful year for Lion President Andy Wavell. On behalf of the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions, I would like to congratulate Andy on a great year and also I To advertise call 01273 586527 or email info@deansmagazine.co.uk
