Holiday Checklist Passports? ü Tickets? ü Sunscreen? ü Computer Security? Wait, what? Thinking about our computers and other electronic equipment may not be top of our list when it comes to holiday planning, but they should still have a place on your checklist. We’ve put together out top tips for holiday security when it comes to laptops, tablets and phones. 5 Tips For Travel Security ● Updates: Make sure that whatever you are planning on taking with you has all the updates installed – it is far better to use your trusty home Wi-Fi for these than risk it taking forever on an unknown connection and potentially using up all your data solely in updates. ● Backup: Ensure that all the data that you have on your devices, such as precious photos, contacts, documents, are all safely backed up before you step out of the door. Losing your phone on holiday
will be bad enough, but if it also has the only copies of all of your photos you will be heart broken. ● Insurance: You’ve made sure your suitcases are covered, but how about your electronic devices? If you get pick-pocketed will your travel insurance cover your laptop, tablet, phones? And remember not to leave any valuables left out in your hotel room if you go out without them. ● Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi certainly isn’t, and we can’t guarantee that your hotel Wi-Fi will be secure either. Think about what you are accessing and if you do need to login into something containing sensitive information consider using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). ● Anti-Virus: Make sure that you have this installed on all of your devices and that it can protect you against a variety of threats including malware. Once safely back home, run an anti-virus scan just to make sure you didn’t pick up more than just a tummy bug whilst away.

The Importance of Social Stimulation in Elderly Care For the elderly, particularly those with dementia, keeping active, engaged and socially stimulated is incredibly important. Social interaction is what older people really need, said Nial Joyce of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre. Deena McCormack, activity coordinator at Clifden House, Seaford, advises a minimum of one outing or stimulating activity a day in order to maintain optimum physical and mental health benefits.
young, and at Clifden House we like to develop opportunities, like the visiting farm, to create these perfect opportunities for the benefit of all,” comments Nial. The concept of intergenerational care began in 1976 when a nursery school and a care home were combined in Tokyo. Since then, there have been successful schemes across Europe, Australia and the US. For more information visit: www.clifdenhouse.co.uk Or call: 01323 896460
“When people are well-stimulated and live meaningful lives, they’re going to eat well. They’re then at less risk of dehydration and falling, therefore happier and, of course, it lowers the risk of hospital admission,” said Deena. From trips to Eastbourne bandstand and fireworks display, to leisurely garden walks, painting and afternoon tea dances, Clifden House residents benefit from gentle stimulation and lots of variety – which is the spice of life.
A visit to Eastbourne bandstand
On September 7, Clifden House is also having a visiting farm come to the Claremont Road dementia care centre. The Millers Ark Farm, complete with donkeys, goats, geese, chickens and much more, will bring the sights, sounds and experiences of the farmyard to the heart of the home. Clifden has also invited a local nursery school to come on the day to experience the farm too. “Intergenerational social time has been proven to add value to both the old and

Osteopathy tips
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Stumbles and Falls We have built in responses in our nervous system that help the body to ‘save’ itself from a stumble, fall or injury. The reflexes that make your leg jump when you hit below the knee cap are part of this wonderful system. This reflex is the quadriceps, the large front of thigh muscle, activating and when it tightens the leg straightens. We have no control over this response and it happens instantaneously as our nervous system reacts to protect us from harm, or when being tested to simulate the reflex response by tapping below the knee. In life this happens in response to pain or injury without hitting below the knee. For example, when we stand on something hot or sharp, the nervous system responds very quickly and the quadriceps on the front of the opposite leg will tighten to help you stand strongly on that leg; at the same time the hamstring, the large muscle at the back of the leg will activate to bend your leg backwards at the knee, taking your foot away from the hot or sharp impact. Another example is when we touch something hot or sharp with our hand and it draws away from the stimulus with lightning speed. This is a similar response from our nervous system using similar reflexes that we have in our arms. These are healthy responses where our nervous system attempts to keep us safe from harm. These same reflexes are activated when we stumble or fall, as the body attempts to keep us upright and safe. It seems that sometimes, these muscles can remain too tight after a stumble or fall and then pull on the joint over time, long after you have forgotten the incident. For example, I find many patients complain of unexplained knee pain, which often responds to specific treatment to calm the muscle response and settle the system back to normal. It is as though the response gets a little ‘frozen in time’ and keeps the muscle tight. When we actually fall and have an impact, we are usually aware of where we have hit the body and may even have a bruise or break to show this. Often we can find bruises and have no memory of how they happened; the body, however seems to remember everything that has ever happened to it and particularly through the ‘intelligent’ fascia that supports and surrounds everything. I wrote about the body memory in an article on ‘The Fascial Network’. We are usually aware of what hurts at the time of a fall and may just brush it off as nothing as after a few days we compensate, move a little differently and no longer feel the hurt. The body is wonderful at compensating, though over time, too many compensations can lead to other problems as the body has less compensation ability and starts to give symp-
toms. I wrote an article about “Body Compensation and Scars”. I often find that patients come in with aches and pains that they have no real explanation for and that seem to have started ‘out of the blue’. While taking a detailed case history of everything that has happened to that person, there is often a history of a fall or accident in the past. The impact that goes into the body during a fall, whiplash of other accident can have a far greater impact than we imagine at the time. It is due to the wonderful ability of our body to keep us safe and functioning that we are able to ignore many of these insults, until we have done that too often. Whilst there is no clear scientific evidence that this occurs, I have treated many people for such conditions and helped to alleviate their suffering. Once the symptoms have eased and more normal function is restored, I encourage patients to have regular M.O.T’s to keep themselves well and ease out the compensations that they may be unaware of carrying. Seeking help for injuries when they happen as well as regular maintenance treatment can help you retain your vim and vigour and potentially avoid bigger problems at a later date. I wrote an article on “Maintenance Osteopathic Treatment”. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Friends of Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve Now that the Nature Reserve is in full bloom I thought it would be a nice idea to select a square metre of land at random and count just how many different plant species we could find. This would be a very short article if I hadn’t been accompanied by our conservation expert, Jo Spickett, who identified all the plants with barely a glance at her reference book. We were happily surprised to identify 27 different plants in the square metre of land. Whilst packing up our kit of ribbon and tent pegs (we travel light) Jo commented that the adjacent square metre contained 4-5 species that weren’t present on our chosen area. This just goes to show the fantastic diversity that is on our doorstep.
to secure 5 new steps in North Wood by Court Ord Path but decided we need softer ground to continue. A huge thank you goes out to Chris Allen who kindly donated his old fence posts to us.
The change in management of the reserve from manual cutting to sheep grazing along with the hard work of our small (but perfectly formed) group of volunteers is changing the face of the Nature Reserve for the better in ways that many could only hope for.
We have also scheduled an introduction to Scrub Bashing Weekend on Friday and Saturday 28/29 September. Two sessions each day 10:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:00.
An interim job of cutting back the hedges on the St Dunstans’ side of the fence to enable stock fencing to be erected took up a work session and we are now heading back onto the nature reserve to start the Great Ragwort Pull 2018. Please come along and join us. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday and 4th Friday of each month at 10:00 at the Beacon Hub Car park (just below the Windmill).
For more information please email fobeaconhill@gmail.com or call us on 01273 983000.
The plants that we counted in our selected square metre were: Agrimony, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Common Knapweed, Blue Green Sedge Species, Bramble, Bristly Oxtongue, Burnet-saxifrage, Cowslip, Field Scabious, Ground Ivy, Greater Knapweed, Hairy Violet, Hedge Bedstraw, Lady’s Bedstraw, Ribwort Plantain, Round Headed Rampion, Red Clover, Dropwort, Rough Hawkbit, Salad Burnet, Self-heal, Sheep’s Fescue, Upright Brome, Wild Carrot, Field Wood-rush, Yellow Rattle, Yorkshire Fog and other grasses that are difficult to accurately identify once they have dropped their seed. Along with the plants our area contained lots of rabbit poo (you’re welcome!) along with passing visits from a grasshopper, a solitary bee, a looper moth caterpillar, a Small Skipper (a butterfly not a lost sailor) and a Harvestman who had the temerity to pinch Jo on the ankle! Luckily, the myth their venom is quite toxic is untrue as they have claws rather than fangs and despite the resemblance they are not spiders and don’t have venom. The fantastic summer we are having is not only changing the face of the Nature Reserve by encouraging different plants to appear and those that require more water to lay low but also “interfering” with FOBH’s work plans. At this time of year we are usually found in the woods maintaining the paths and steps but the ground is proving to be too hard. We did manage

Rottingdean Grange 1927
The photos shown here were taken in 1927 for a Country Life Magazine feature on The Grange.

The Hall

There are no records which accurately date the house but it was built circa 1750 as a Vicarage on the site of an earlier one. It is said that the earlier building was derelict but the incumbent was too mean to repair it for his curate. The curate rode to Newhaven one evening and one imagines that after a few drinks the Vicar agreed to a rebuild. However, in the sober light of day the next morning, he had a change of heart and rode to Rottingdean, only to find the walls and rafters already been dismantled by the able-bodied men of the village. The Rev Dr Hooker arrived in 1792 and enlarged The Vicarage for his school, adding a north wing (which destroyed the symmetry of the frontage) and also attic dormitories for the boys. Among his pupils were Cardinal Manning, Fox Talbot, Lord Lytton and the nephews of both Napoleon and Wellington. Dr Hooker was succeeded by Tatton Brockman for ten years then by Arthur Thomas for 48 years. Two subsequent incumbents, Rev Champney and Rev Tower struggled with the upkeep until finally in 1908 Rev Arthur Wynne was given permission to sell and a new Vicarage was built in Steyning Avenue.
41 The artist William Nicholson RA visited Rudyard Kipling in 1897 to paint his portrait and later to work on with him on The Almanac of Twelve sports. In 1910 he and wife Mabel purchased The Vicarage, renaming it The Grange. He intended it as a quiet holiday retreat but was inundated with visitors. Mabel got Lutyens to build him studio in the garden with the proceeds of a painting she had sold.

In 1914 Lutyens got him a commission to paint the Viceroy of India and at that point decided to move abroad and sell The Grange to Sir George Lewis, a lawyer. After the war, Sir George commissioned Sir Edwin Lutyens to remodel the interior of the house add a rear wing, while Gertude Jekyll created gardens. Sir George died 1927 and his wife Mabel in 1931, when their son George inherited the property. Lutyens Wing
Downs view
In 1936 he sold The Grange to Dorothy Neville, wife of Charles Neville, who developed the coastal strip. In wartime The Grange was used briefly by St Dunstan’s but considered too vulnerable to attack so it was used as officers’ mess for Canadian troops. After the war it was extremely dilapidated and in 1949 Brighton Council compulsorily purchased the property. In 1954 it reopened as an Art Gallery and Museum, including a Toy Museum from 1959. Today the Grange is leased by The Rottingdean Preservation Society and hosts both a museum and art gallery open from Tuesday to Sunday. When the weather is fine you can enjoy a splendid tea in the garden.

Nuisance Calls How to stop nuisance calls at home Until new laws regarding cold calling are introduced, it’s suggested that you register your phone number with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) online at tpsonline.org.uk or call 0345 0700707. Once your number is on this list it is illegal for companies to cold call and try to sell you something and if caught they can be fined up to £500,000. However, this does not stop all nuisance calls as rules don’t apply to call centres based abroad. There have been reports of fraudsters masquerading as the TPS. The genuine service is free, and no one will call asking for you to sign up for a fee. BT - Many major telecom companies offer their own blocking services. You can sign up for BT Protected. BT have compiled a list of known nuisance callers and this free service will block numbers on this list. If calls do slip through and you obtain the number BT can be asked to add it to the existing list. www.bt.com/call/protect Sky - Customers can sign up for free Talk Shield Service, but you must have both the land line and internet with them. Contact them for more details as to how this service works but you do need a phone which displays the caller number on the screen. https://www.sky.com/shop/broadband-talk/talk-shield
Talk Talk - Offers customers a similar service called CallSafe. You can also invest in a stand- alone call blocking gadget such as a true call device which plugs in between your phone and the wall socket. This also intercepts calls to request the caller states their name before being put through and numbers can be added to a block or safe list. Visit truecall.co.uk or call 0800 0336330 for more information. Also available is a home phone with a built-in call screening answerphone such a BT Decor 2600 Premium Nuisance Call Blocker costing about £34.99. Mobile cold calls Register your mobile number with TPS by texting ‘TPS’ and your email address to 85095. You can also report nuisance callers by texting ‘CALL’ to 7726. A free TPS Protect app which will help identify different types of nuisance calls can be downloaded. Colin Rayne Colin Rayne returns to The Deans Magazine with more of his work to share with us…. Telscombe Village has always been a favourite place of mine to walk. It is home to Stud Farm, St Lawrence Church (10th century) and until recently a Youth Hostel, (centre left of image) ...also a handful of charming residential properties including a ‘Judges retreat’ The painting bears influence of Grimms Fairy Tales.
Above: Colin with ‘Walking through Telscombe Village’ which features on the cover of this edition of the magazine
‘Approach to Telscombe Village’ Colin says of this picture “This dramatic painting, encapsulates life on the road leading down to Telscombe Village, with some sheep of Stud Farm, very ‘typically!' blocking the road! I have included a rainbow to enhance the sense of ‘awe’ and wonder at a this unique landscape” The House of Rayne private gallery opens daily by appointment. The Benefits of Tai Chi Hi my name is Andrea, I have been teaching Tai Chi for 22 years and have found that one of the most profound side effects of regular practice of Tai Chi is a heightened sense of well-being. Tai Chi is a series of graceful movements and breathing exercises that are low impact, gentle on the joints and available to many regardless of age when other exercises might be too demanding. Tai Chi is not is a martial art that requires strength, aggression, exertion and precision. We are all different and need to adapt to what our bodies are capable of. The type of Tai Chi you will be learning is very soft and gentle. We will be working on opening the heart and balancing body and mind. You will learn how to align the body so that your core strength and balance is improved. The whole process of Tai Chi/Chi Gong is about being with yourself, paying attention to your breath, which has the effect of slowing your bodily functions and stilling the mind thus ultimately slowing down the aging process.
Tai Chi is an experience and difficult to put into words so if you would like to become more mobile, address health issues such as high blood pressure, poor circulation, meet friendly people, build up stamina, soothe emotions or reduce your stress levels or body weight, Tai Chi is for you. Tai Chi is not competitive or demanding and my class is designed to be enjoyable as well as effective. The atmosphere in class, I have been told by students, is loving, caring, peaceful, friendly and happy togetherness. My existing class is made up of all ages, sexes and abilities, some have been with me for eleven years. The class starting on Wednesday 5 September at 11 45 am is for complete beginners or those who may have tried Tai Chi in the past and would like to begin practicing again. For more information or an informal chat please call Andrea on: 01273 304472 or 07941371595 Alternatively email: toandreatw@yahoo.co.uk
We begin with a gentle Chi Gong (pronounced Chee-gong) warm up which are subtle, easy movements. Chi Gong is working with the breath and literally means ‘Life Energy Cultivation’. The second part of the class is a set sequence of Tai Chi moves which we call ‘the form’ that is practiced and learned over a period of weeks at your own pace.

Lions News This month we look to update our contact with senior citizens in our area. Also, as our busy summer continues we look forward to the autumn with The White Stix band in our charity concert series along with our team based Sponsored Swim at Roedean School. Also, we have details on a recent donation to Blind Veterans UK. Every year we provide subsidised Christmas lunches for senior citizens in our area (Rottingdean, Saltdean, Woodingdean, Ovingdean and Falmer). We also organise subsidised senior citizen coach tours during the year that generally end up somewhere for a cream tea. These are all enjoyable events and days out with plenty of company. With these service activities in mind, we would like to update our contact list for senior citizens in our area. If you know someone, who is permanently resident in our area, over 65, retired and not in full time employment, that you feel would be interested please contact us and we will send them the appropriate form requesting their details. Of course if you are in this golden time yourself please make direct contact. We are keen to bring people together. Remember, there is no need to be lonely just let a Lion know you are there.
garden is now located in the inner garden at their Ovingdean Centre and is a stunning spectacle. Lesley Garven, the Centre Manager, was delighted to receive the money and said it will be used towards helping to maintain the garden. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities, or you are interested in our White Stix Concert or you would like to book a team at our Sponsored Swim, please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. Last month my article had the wrong date for our annual Saltdean Gala. The event is always on a Saturday and there had been a read across from last year’s event. Please accept my sincere apologies. I think the heat is getting to me. Lion Roger Bluff
On 20 October, the Blind Veterans UK’s own band will be playing popular music from across the decades for us at Rottingdean Village Hall with all monies shared between us and Blind Veterans UK: our share will be going to local charities and community/Lions projects. Tickets are £10 in advance each and are available now, and £12 on the night subject to availability. There will be a licensed bar. It should be another lively evening with this well-known, much loved, local group. You may have enjoyed their gig at the Armed Forces Day back in July held at their Ovingdean Centre. We hope you can make it. On 18 November we have our popular Sponsored Swim held at Roedean School Pool. The swim is held annually to raise money for local charities. Groups, through entered teams of any size, raise funds by obtaining sponsorship with the proceeds being split between their own choice of charity or good cause and Lions’ charities; once again this year the Lions’ principal beneficiary will be Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Teams swim for one hour with the aim of swimming as many lengths as possible. Please make contact as soon as possible if you would like to enter a team.

We have recently started a new year for the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions. The last fundraising event held, for last year, was the annual Rottingdean Lions Fayre back in June and over £3,800 was raised; in addition we had a busy time selling tickets for our Grand Summer Draw. This marked the end of a very successful year for Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions. We now wish Lion President Ian Christie well as he now takes us forward for another, hopefully, equally triumphant year – long may it continue. Recently, Lion President Ian presented a cheque for £500 to Blind Veterans UK specifically to be used at their Ovingdean Centre. The presentation took place in their sensory garden given to them after it won a gold medal as one of the show gardens at The Hampton Court Flower Show in 2017. The

I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo‐fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the
pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826
