Website Security There are several advantages of shopping online but navigating the internet and making sure that you have landed on a safe site can be perilous. Creating a website that looks like the real thing but will scam you out of your money is pretty easy to do.

the products being offered but be careful to check all the small print before you pay out. Under Lock and Key Look at the address bar of the website – can you see a padlock icon on the far-left hand side?

So how can you tell if you are on a genuine website or have inadvertently gone onto a more sinister site? 3 clues the website you are trying to view isn’t safe. Pop Goes The Weasel Since the introduction of GDPR websites must make it clear that they use cookies so you should be getting at least one notification (unless you regularly use the site and have accepted and closed the cookie pop up), but websites that have multiple, infuriating pop ups trying to take you off to places you didn’t intend to go sound alarm bells. No About Turn If there are no obvious links to a returns policy, a privacy policy or an About Us page, consider trying to source the products from another website. We may like

If you don’t see this, or you see the icon but is has a red line through it, the site is not deemed to be secure.

You should also be looking out for https as in the illustration with our web address – if it is missing the “s” again it is not deemed to be secure (the S stands for Secure). Some of the better anti-virus software out there will alert and warn you not to go to the site, but we should all remain aware of where we are sharing our financial details online.

Supporting Someone with Dementia at Christmas As the festive season approaches, Nial Joyce of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford offers his advice on keeping the celebrations dementia friendly 1. Plan ahead: It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of Christmas and make plans to attend lots of different festive events. Although you might want to ‘treat’ your loved one to special days out and trips, often crowds and lots of lights may lead to sensory overload and distress. Studies show that many people with dementia experience increased confusion later in the day, so plan outings for the morning, when there may be fewer crowds and it will be easier for you to enjoy your time together. 2. Revisit the past: Christmas is the ideal time to be nostalgic and enjoy sharing memories. Perhaps some of your decorations hold sentimental value or there are Christmas family traditions you can enjoy together. Many dementia patients find it easier to access long past memories rather than recent ones, so use this opportunity to take a trip down memory lane. 3. Give a tour: If your loved one is visiting your home for Christmas it may be helpful to them if you create some very simple and clear signs to put on the doors to all the key rooms, such as the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and so on. Illustrations as well as words are really handy. Then as soon as they arrive, walk them around your house and show them where everything is. 4. Streamline the dinner: As much as we might be looking forward to a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, a heaving plate can be daunting for someone who has difficulties eating. The person with dementia may also feel self-conscious at a large dinner table, so avoid making them the centre of attention. If you know that they prefer a smaller serving (or that they have always hated sprouts!) adapt their plate accordingly. Being together at Christmas is what counts after all.

5. Give them a break: In calmer moments - such as when the family’s slumped in front of the TV mid-afternoon - have some quieter activities to hand. Look through old photo albums together, put on one of their favourite Christmas films, or simply involve the person with dementia in your own activities. Designate a quiet room, away from the noise of television and music, and allow time for a nap. At Clifden House we offer a vibrant and active environment, as well as a home for family, friends and carers to spend quality time with their loved one. Our care team is on hand to offer help and advice on communicating with a loved one with dementia, whatever the stage of their illness. This year Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford, celebrates 50 years of delivering exceptional care in Sussex. As a leader in specialist dementia care it aims to facilitate each person to continue to live a fulfilling and active life with privacy, dignity and security. www.clifdenhouse.co.uk T: 01323 896460

Bridgeford’s Best Bites

Cacao Chocolate as a Health Food Chocolate is processed from the pod of the cacao plant, grown in the tropics. The Mayans were probably the first to cultivate the cacao plant. The early chocolate drink, considered a "drink of the Gods" was mixed with cinnamon and pepper, tasting bitter and strong, and most appreciated for its invigorating and stimulating effects than for its taste. Nutrition: Rich in magnesium, phosphorus and potassium; high in polyphenols, especially flavonols (antioxidants). Theobromine is the alkaloid responsible for its bitter taste and has similar though lesser effect to caffeine; it is toxic to dogs. Phenylethylamine functions as a neuro-modulator responsible for the stimulant (norepinephrine) and feel good (dopamine) factors. Science: Anti-Inflammatory: modulates inflammatory markers of atherosclerosis Anti-Oxidant: due to flavonoids, especially epicatechin Cardiovascular: manage and prevent hypertension, reduction in cardiovascular events and strokes Cholesterol: lowering effects Exercise: decreased soreness after exercise Immune: modulation due to flavonoids Kidneys: increased oxygenation to renal medulla; more study needed Liver: reduced levels of liver enzymes in HIV and hepatitis-C patients and may help in alcoholic fatty liver prevention; more study needed Malaria: hypothesized as a prophylactic to fight malaria. Mind/Mood: Improved mood and cognitive function due to neurovascular coupling, recommended for the elderly; inhibition of tryptophan breakdown in vitro. Flavinoids are important in learning and memory, lowering the risk of Alzheimer's; decreased mental fatigue, may be related to improved endothelial function and blood flow Neuro-Protective: due to anti-oxidant properties Obesity: decrease in expression of genes involved in fatty acid synthesis, reducing digestion and absorption of fats and carbohydrates and increasing satiety Adding Chocolate to your Diet: The above results apply to real cacao and not the commercial chocolate bars!

A Real Chocolate Recipe that is quicker than a trip to the store: Ingredients: 3 parts coconut oil 3 parts raw cacao powder 1 part liquid sweetener (I like maple syrup due to its nutrient content) Using 1 part as a 1 tablespoon makes about 4 truffles. Method: Melt coconut oil in a double boiler (or a small pan in a larger pan of boiling water), mix in cacao and maple syrup. Place the mixture in the freezer for 5 minutes, then roll into balls, like truffles; can also be set in a mould. Variations for Christmas Flavour, mix in any or all of the following as desired: 1 part fresh orange juice 1 part desiccated coconut 1 part sesame seeds 1 part crushed nuts 1/4 part ground cinnamon Sprinkle of black pepper and/or cayenne pepper Roll in desiccated coconut and sprinkle with raw cacao. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Friends of Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill Nature Reserve The Great Scrub Bash 2019 is going ahead on full steam. The recent wet weather has made pulling the scrub much easier and even been considerate enough to go on hold for a few hours while we set about our work. We have been blessed with sunshine during our last few outings and, as we were working on the lee of the Nature Reserve, we were protected from that biting westerly wind. Despite pulling hundreds (yes hundreds) of sycamore shoots in the spring whilst walking the dogs some still managed to slip under the radar and it’s quite amazing just how quickly they grow. Our volunteer, Kay, spent an absolute age digging out a sycamore this week. Unlike the long hawthorn, the sycamore root is more of a ball which doesn’t give up without a fight. Nevertheless, she kept at it and dug out the heaviest root of the year so far. Russ, the perfectionist, worked slightly away from the group this session as wanted to finish off what he started last time. 2 hours later and he proudly stood by his own pile of brambles. The only slacker is Freddie but he’s a little ginger bear of a dog so we let that slide.

Christmas is just around the corner and we will be holding our regular Friday outing on 27 December. If you’re feeling like a spot of fresh air and a little gentle exercise after all the festivities then why not come up and join us. Doubtless there will be some left over Christmas goodies to share, alfresco snacking always feels like less calories to me! We meet for a 2 hour session on the 2ⁿ Tuesday and 4 Friday of each month, 10AM at the picnic benches to the south end of the Nature Reserve. Please join us in sturdy footwear, gardening gloves and, if you have them, bring secateurs. We always look forward to having new members so come along and join in the conservation conversation.

Tudor Close Mike Laslett

The picturesque ‘Tudor Cottages’ on the corner of Dean Court Road are not Tudor but a clever conversion which Charles Neville, the developer of Peacehaven and Saltdean, carried out during the 1930s, utilizing a barn and some cottages of Court Farm. On the opposite side of the road, more ‘Tudor’ homes appeared when two further agricultural buildings were converted into Tudor Close.

See us online at www.deansmagazine.co.uk

41 The buildings were skilfully developed in mock-Tudor style over a period of three years, but much of the fabric of Tudor Close and Tudor Cottages is genuinely old since much of the timber that has been so elaborately carved with Tudor roses and other decorations were taken from other old barns and buildings and even from Tudor warships from Portsmouth Dockyard. Mock Tudor was very popular in the 1930s, typified by tall Tudor-style chimneys, carved timber gables, small windows with leaded lights and solid oak front doors. Domestic examples of Tudor-style carving be seen at several other houses in Dean Court Road, and also at Founthill Road, Westmeston Avenue and Cranleigh Avenue, Saltdean. The homes at Tudor Close can be seen nearing completion in this clip from the British Film Institute archive: https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-down-by-thesea-1925-online Examples of some of the Carvings. Thanks to Pam Thompson for permission to take photographs in her home.

The homes did not sell well as they were too expensive at that time of depression, so they were converted into the Tudor Close Hotel. In the 1930’s many Hollywood stars, including Bette Davis, Cary Grant and Errol Flynn were guests. Another celebrity guest was a 12-year-old Julie Andrews, who was in a show in London called ‘Starlight Roof.’ Produced by Val Parnell at the London Hippodrome, the show featured such old timers as Fred Emney and Vic Oliver, but mainly consisted of singing and dancing routines to the sounds of the George Melachrino Orchestra. Her father and mother would bring her down after the Saturday night show and she would spend Sunday and Monday at the Hotel, going back for the Monday evening performance. The appeal of the Tudor Close Hotel was that you could rent a whole house with your chauffeur housed nearby and enjoy a luxury swimming pool with all its mod-cons. In 1936-7 the hotel was extended by architect Richard Jones who also designed The Ocean Hotel and Saltdean Lido. As it grew in popularity, the 1937 extension provided a billiards room, ballroom, ladies bar and a restaurant. The hotel trade became very difficult after the war because petrol rationing restricted the number of potential visitors. The Hotel continued to be popular with jockeys, race course owners and trainers because they were able to get supplies of petrol! Due to the declining trade, the Hotel failed financially and was converted to homes in the 1950s but many of the faux Tudor features have been retained. You may be amused to know that when Waddington’s first introduced the popular board game ‘Cluedo’ in 1949 it was originally called ‘Murder at Tudor Close.’ Travelling entertainers Anthony and Elva Pratt hosted their murder mystery games at the Hotel, which were played out by guests and local actors. Called ‘Murder at Tudor Close’ they later took it to Waddington’s games, who marketed it as ‘Cluedo.’

Seasonal Advice Christmas is nearly upon us and this is the time when telephone and email scams and cold callers seem to increase. We need to be particularly aware of not being taken in by these unscrupulous people! Remember all our previous warnings about not giving any personal information on the phone or by email and do not click on any links or press any buttons on your phone when asked to unless you know 100% they are genuine people. The Police have issued the following information regarding doorstep callers. ● Do not allow them into your home ● Take time to check their credentials by requesting an ID and check carefully ● Also, you can check their company details online, with a friend or neighbour. ● Check the phone number or email details by looking for their number in the telephone book not on the number they give you ● If they are genuine, they will understand this ● Checkatrade is a great resource to check a business or find alternatives that are verified and reviewed by customers. For advice about burglary, theft or fraud visit the relevant pages on the police website www.sussex.police.uk Christmas is the time when new televisions, large electrical items, Playstations, IPads, phones etc are often purchased. Please remember NOT to leave the empty boxes on view near the recycling bin – please break them up and put in the bin. Don’t give opportunist thieves the chance to know what is inside your property! The Police also advise the registration of your belongings on the Immobilise National Property Register. It’s free and takes a moment to do. If your valuables are subsequently stolen, it helps police, insurers and second-hand traders to identify them. Find out more on https://www.immobiise.com

You can also join Sussex Police Community Message Service called ‘In the Know’ which will keep you updated on news in your area. Find out how to join on https://www.intheknow.community. The Police recently reported that communities work together to prevent crime. Joining Neighbourhood Watch schemes or becoming a Neighbourhood Watch Contact Co-ordinator helps to strengthen deterrents. If you care about your community and your security please contact your local NHW scheme by either phoning Secretary Linda Hood 01273 306441 or by email nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.com You can follow Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean NHW Scheme on Facebook: Saltdean Nhw Twitter: @NhwSro Please also take a look at our website – www.saltdeanrottingdeanovingdeannhw.co.uk

White Crow

(Cert 12a)

Ralph Fiennes, Oleg Ivenko Petulant, capricious, self-centred, single-minded: I could be talking about Elton John - but no, I’m talking about Rudolf Nureyev, one of the most outstanding ballet dancers of all time. In our charity film for December, we encounter all the above writ large, blended with Russian political intrigue and national pride, as the Russians try to keep Rudolf for themselves. Nureyev is forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. Nicely constructed, over three phases: in the first, we see flashbacks of Nureyev’s childhood. Filmed in bleak black and white, we see a child brought up in poverty. Phase two is set in Leningrad. Nureyev (Oleg Ivenko) working hard, trying to be noticed by Pushkin, (Ralph Fiennes; ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’) playing the hard-toplease ballet-teacher/taskmaster. Becoming more absorbed, and equally frustrated, by the craft of dancing, Nureyev is his own worst enemy: his waspish behaviour, arrogance and selfishness distancing him from those around him, often dismissing those of significance, who may have helped him. Phase three is set in Paris. I remember years ago seeing newsreel of Nureyev. The newsreels always seemed to be confrontational and politically charged. The TV report would then cut away to someone dancing ballet. As a child I found these two personas hard to reconcile as being one person. This film was like therapy! Back to the story. Nureyev arrives in Paris, arrogant as ever, insisting, at one point, that a French female friend talks to a waiter on his behalf as Nureyev feels that the waiter is looking down on him. Seemingly a bit more settled in Paris, his love of dance and his growing success have a stabilising effect. Trouble brews, however, as his KGB handlers step up their influence to retain Nureyev as a Soviet citizen. Nureyev plays cat and mouse at Paris Le Bourget Airport: a sequence, at the end of the film, that will stay with you - like the final hostage-exchange sequence at the end of Tom Hanks’ film ‘Bridge of Spies’. The film convincingly conveys the sense of awe that Nureyev must have experienced as he transitioned from an impoverished rural background into working in cities as grand as Leningrad and Paris. The extended scene at the airport is shot as if it were a 1960s thriller: we, as audience, are so close to the

Nureyev character (despite his shortcomings), that we are deeply concerned for a good outcome. Splendid performance from Ralph Fiennes, his third outing as Director. Hats off also for having delivered all his own lines in Russian. The same can be said for Oleg Ivenko, who learned English for the part. Why ‘White Crow’? The film derives its title from the Russian phrase ‘belaya vorona’ meaning an outsider or nonconformist, a person who stands out from his or her contemporaries, in the way a white crow would stand out from its black fellows – so there! Please come and support this one: it is our traditional annual charity screening. There will be an interval, with refreshments, including prosecco - and we will be sending ALL the proceeds from the night to the Clock Tower Sanctuary, helping homeless people aged 1625 in Brighton. Thank you for your support over the year. Cinema Saltdean takes this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and happy viewing into 2020. Jon

Lions News With Christmas just round the corner, we would like to remind you of an opportunity to support us with no cost to you while you shop online at Amazon. You can use Smile Amazon whereby you nominate a charity of your choice from their list. You will find us listed as Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club Charitable Trust. Please choose us if you can and keep Smile as your default Amazon page – many thanks. We have received positive feedback from two of our team captains, who led their teams in this year’s sponsored swim, giving indications that a parents’ team and another scout group (19th Brighton) may enter next year. This is exciting news for what has always been a popular fundraiser for us. A great range of pledges have been received, these tend to increase as the monies come in so we are hoping for a really successful event. Well done again to everyone that swam for their teams: also, a big thank you to all the helpers and organisers. The Brighton autumn half term next year is October 26 to 30. We would therefore expect to hold the swim on Sunday 18 October next year. Please put this date in your diary. It will take place at Roedean School Pool. We are pleased to announce that we will be one of the causes for the next round of the Co-op’s Community Fund. Our cause is for personal development projects that include encouragement for young people in team working, creating their own innovative ideas for improving the world around us, with support in local schools, youth clubs and scout groups, for example. Local Co-ops support this project. If you are a member of the Co-op you are able to nominate us as your charity, which would provide support for us for the next twelve months. If you are able, we would appreciate your support very much indeed. A proportion of your spend on Co-op products would come to us. On the service front, we have provided books to our local reception class pupils. We have also supported a young carer with a bus pass to assist them given their responsibilities as a young person. We have also supported the local Jamie’s Farm that provides disadvantaged children with a rewarding residential visit to a working farm where they help with the various jobs that need to be done. The stimulus provided is quite amazing for these youngsters, many of whom have never seen a farm in operation before. The ROAR final is being held this month. This is a competition where teams from schools present innovative projects they have developed that aim to improve the

Pain Therapist Penny Koster Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue. I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, myofascia is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant

future everyone will be having these treatments. The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Brighton & Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild Autumn Glory: Great memories for the darker days of winter! It was a great day out for some of the ladies of our local Townswomen’s Guild; after a relatively early start, and by courtesy of The Newhaven Lions mini-bus and a member’s car, we set off from Saltdean Community Centre for Sheffield Park Gardens (NT). The trip was in mid-October, said to be the very best time to see the blaze of colour for which Sheffield Park is renowned and we were not disappointed. We walked down avenues of trees, at every turn there were spectacular views and a new colour to see. Several trees were very old and imported from around the world by the original owner of the property, including of course the glorious red Nyssa and Acer both immigrants from Australia and bright green Taxodiums an early import from Florida. Even mushrooms, some that looked so vibrant and almost unreal, they reminded me of childhood stories of pixies and fairies and not to be picked! The garden is a horticultural work of art, formed through centuries of landscape design, with influences of ‘Capability’ Brown and Humphry Repton. Some of our members were happy to use the ‘buggies’ provided at the park, which made our journey through the avenues, round the lake and back even better. We had coffee and then lunch in the café; lovely cakes and choice of goodies. As the clouds closed in, we all met up at the mini-bus and just as the rain started, we set off back home to Saltdean. A lovely day was had by all; maybe you would like to join us and take part in future excursions. Our actives include a walking group, a games afternoon, a monthly lunch club and day trips like this one. In December we have a Christmas Lunch and we have organised a visit to the Pantomime in Eastbourne.

Come to a meeting free of charge to see what it’s all about and you can be assured a of warm welcome. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at the Saltdean Community Centre (by the Lido) at 13.45. The next is the Meeting 5 December, we hope to you see you there. The House of Rayne Front cover image - Judgement - Glass Sculpture 38” high

possibly intended to suggest God creating and judging the world, simultaneously.

This is based upon William Blake’s famous piece ‘The Ancient of Days’.

The figure is made from 3mm & 4mm silver glass, with no added coloured glass, apart from a ‘Martian Red Sun’ which has been added to increase a sense of mystery, using artistic licence. It should be noted, that viewing work the actual work is recommended.

This Glass Sculpture, 38” high, sits within an ‘elliptically glazed frame’. Having made the frame, acrylic spray paint was used to create a ‘backdrop’ and the central circle, together with the clouds and shafts of light appearing through them. It was necessary to create the backdrop prior to starting the silver glass ‘deity figure’ - to prevent the fine spray paint from leaving a residue on the glass. The ‘Deity’ or ‘God’ figure, within a ‘heavenly sphere’ is holding a pair of dividers, reaching down into a void,

Judgement maybe seen at The House of Rayne Gallery, by appointment: 01273 302826 thehouseofrayne@btinternet.com www.thehouseofrayne.co.uk Readers maybe interested to visit an exhibition of Blake’s work at Tate Britain, currently running until 2 February 2020 to draw a comparison with Blake’s The Ancient of Days to ‘Rayne’s Judgment!'

Here is Colin Rayne’s tribute to this brilliant young musician created as an elliptically framed colourful glass Mosaic, 24 “ high. It is based upon an image of the musician, during his playing of Elgar’s Cello Concerto at the BBC Proms last September. It can viewed at The House of Rayne gallery by appointment.
